Executive Summary
01 Executive Summary — 2 Corinthians | English → Arabic Language Package
Why it matters
2 Corinthians extends the Romans-anchored Arabic Language Package into Paul’s most personally exposed, theologically dense letter — one built around a single passage (5:11-21) that compresses reconciliation, new creation, and substitutionary imputation into eleven verses carrying five Critical-risk doctrines at once. Every rendering decision here sits directly on top of the sharpest Christian-Muslim theological fault lines in Arabic: a “reconciliation” word (مصالحة) whose everyday meaning runs backward from Paul’s own claim, a “new creation” doctrine Islamic anthropology has no category for, and a covenant argument (ch. 3) that risks being read as confirming the very abrogation logic it is written to refute. Getting this letter right — or wrong — shapes how every subsequent Arabic Bible curriculum in this pipeline is trusted by its readers.
Key findings
- 84 total glossary terms now govern this curriculum: 40 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline, 44 newly introduced by 2 Corinthians’s eight doctrines (Reconciliation, New Creation, Suffering/Comfort, New Covenant, Sincerity/Authority, Generosity, Power in Weakness, Genuine/False Apostleship).
- 47 of those 84 terms (56%) are Critical or High risk (19 Critical, 28 High), each requiring exact, non-negotiable enforcement per
assets/translation_memory.json. - 28 total doctrines are catalogued in
doctrine_risk_registry.json, of which 18 (5 Critical + 13 High) require mandatory human theologian review — up from the Romans baseline’s already-substantial 29-doctrine theologian load, confirming this letter is at least as doctrinally hazardous as Romans despite its shorter length. - The core passage (5:11-21) alone carries 3 of the letter’s 5 Critical doctrines (Reconciliation, New Creation, Substitutionary Sin-Bearing/Imputed Righteousness) — the highest doctrinal density of any single passage across both curricula in this pipeline to date.
- Full-book coverage is confirmed: all 13 chapters analyzed, with none silently skipped (see
08_core_glossary.md§C and11_doctrine_analysis.mdPart 2 chapter-by-chapter confirmation).
Risks
- مصالحة (reconciliation) — Critical. Ordinary Arabic usage denotes bilateral, negotiated settlement; Paul’s doctrine is unilateral and God-cost-bearing. Mistranslation or under-explanation here inverts the gospel’s own logic in its clearest single statement (5:18-20).
- خليقة جديدة (new creation) — Critical. Islamic fitrah/tawba theology has no ontological-remaking category; without deliberate scaffolding this doctrine defaults to indistinguishable moral-reform language.
- العهد الجديد (new covenant) — Critical. Directly collides with Islamic naskh (abrogation) doctrine; the argument risks being read as confirming, rather than reversing, a supersession pattern.
- 13:14 Trinitarian benediction — Critical. Concentrates nearly every Critical baseline term into one verse naming three divine Persons — the single most concentrated affront to tawhid’s numerical unity claim anywhere in this curriculum.
- Crowded-vocabulary traps (High): ختم (seal) shares its root with خاتم النبيين (Seal of the Prophets); غطاء must replace the Van Dyck-precedent برقع and the common حجاب (both gendered dress-code terms); الفردوس must replace the more available but doctrinally loaded الجنة; الداخلي/الخارجي must replace الباطن/الظاهر (both divine names). Each is a non-obvious trap for a translator working from standard bilingual references alone.
- Structural risk unique to this letter: the apostleship contest (chs. 10-12) recurs across many chapters rather than appearing once, meaning the required الرسول/Muhammad-title distinguishing note cannot be a single first-use footnote — it must be re-applied at every cluster, a process risk as much as a lexical one.
Opportunities
- Genuine bridge concepts identified and ready for use: عربون (down payment/guarantee) is an unusually apt, non-loaded commercial-metaphor match for ἀρραβών; الإخلاص (sincerity) and غيرة (jealousy) offer real positive theological bridges to Islamic ikhlas and ghayrah when properly anchored; tzedakah/zakat/dana comparative material (per
04_comparative_theology.md) gives generosity teaching a rich cross-tradition on-ramp. - Consistency dividend: because 40 terms carry over unchanged from Romans, learners moving between the two curricula encounter stable vocabulary for shared doctrines (grace, righteousness, lord, holy_spirit, apostle), reducing cognitive load and reinforcing doctrinal coherence across the pipeline.
- This package pre-empts known failure modes: the landscape survey (
05_translation_landscape.md) already catalogs specific cult/sect and Muslim-Idiom-Translation renderings to reject (NWT’s non-Trinitarian 13:14 handling, MIT softening of “Son of God” and 5:21’s substitution, Ahmadiyya-style resurrection reframing), giving Phase 2 reviewers a concrete exclusion list rather than an abstract caution.
Recommended actions
- Load
assets/translation_memory.jsonandanalysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md(2 Corinthians versions) together with the Romans baseline files before any Phase 2 segment translation begins — the 2 Corinthians files extend, and never override, the baseline for shared terms. - Route all 18 Critical/High doctrine segments and all 47 Critical/High term segments to human theologian review per
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonandbible_term_registry.json; do not permit automated-only approval for any occurrence of reconciliation, new creation, new covenant, or the 13:14 benediction. - Fix the core passage (5:11-21) and the 13:14 benediction as verbatim-consistent text across every curriculum document, on the same footing as the baseline’s Romans 1:16-17/8:28/10:9-10 rule, before batch Phase 2 processing begins.
- Apply the mandatory re-noting rule for رسول-rooted terms (apostle, super-/false apostles) at every chapter cluster in chs. 10-12, not only at first occurrence, given this letter’s structurally recurring apostleship contest.
- Carry forward the YouVersion SVD (
129) / NAV (199) version recommendation and the2CObook-code hyperlink convention established in05_translation_landscape.mdas the fixed standard for all subsequent Arabic curricula in this pipeline.
This summary synthesizes 04_comparative_theology.md, 05_translation_landscape.md, 06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md, 07_semantic_analysis.md, 08_core_glossary.md, 11_doctrine_analysis.md, assets/translation_memory.json, assets/bible_term_registry.json, and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json. It extends, and does not contradict, the Romans baseline Language Package.
