Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Jude (English → Arabic)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the entire book of Jude (1:1–25). Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json are marked Reused and carry their baseline rendering forward unchanged, per the hard rule that established renderings must be reused exactly. Terms new to this curriculum are marked New and are proposed here for addition to the Language Package’s enforcement databases (Phase 1 Step 9 / translation memory extension).
Risk tiers follow the baseline convention exactly: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence) / High (human theologian review) / Medium (native speaker review) / Low (automated review).
Section A — Reused Baseline Terms Appearing in Jude
| English Term | Arabic Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine (Jude curriculum) | Jude References | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| God | الله | Allāh | Critical | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:1, 4, 21, 25 | Reuse exactly; see baseline “god” note. |
| Father | الآب | al-Āb | Critical | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:1 | Reuse exactly; paired risk with Son of God per baseline. |
| Jesus | يسوع | Yasū’ | Critical | Contending for the Faith / all doctrines | 1:1, 4, 17, 21, 25 | Reuse exactly; never عيسى. |
| Christ | المسيح | al-Masīh | Critical | Contending for the Faith / all doctrines | 1:1, 4, 17, 21, 25 | Reuse exactly. |
| Lord | الرب | al-Rabb | Critical | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers; Doxology | 1:4, 5, 9, 14, 17, 21, 25 | Reuse exactly; never softened to السيد/المولى. Also underlies δεσπότης’s companion title in 1:4 (see Section B for δεσπότης itself). |
| Holy Spirit | الروح القدس | al-Rūḥ al-Qudus | Critical | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:19 (implied), 1:20 | Reuse exactly; contrast the false teachers’ Spirit-less state (1:19) with genuine believers “praying in the Holy Spirit” (1:20). |
| grace | النعمة | al-ni’mah | High | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:4 | Reuse exactly; the false teachers pervert grace into license — the doctrine of grace itself is not at fault. |
| faith | الإيمان | al-īmān | High | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:3, 20 | Reuse exactly; note the sense-shift in Jude toward “the faith” as a fixed content deposit, not only relational trust — see 07 analysis, v.3. |
| salvation | الخلاص | al-khalāṣ | Critical | Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | 1:3, 23 | Reuse exactly; 1:23’s “save, snatching from the fire” reinforces the urgent, effective, once-for-all sense already established in baseline. |
| saints / holy ones | القديسون | al-qiddīsūn | High | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:3 | Reuse exactly for believers; flag the distinct referent (likely angels) at 1:14’s “his holy myriads” — do not conflate the two senses. |
| holy | مقدس | muqaddas | Medium/High | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:20 (“most holy faith”) | Reuse exactly; superlative construction (أقدس) needs naturalness check. |
| called | المدعوون | al-mad’uwwūn | High | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:1 | Reuse exactly; direction of God’s summons, not human da’wah. |
| apostle | الرسول | al-rasūl | High | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:17 | Reuse exactly; distinguish NT apostolic office from Islamic prophetic finality claim. |
| sin / sinners | الخطية | al-khaṭīyah | High | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:15 (ἁμαρτωλοί) | Reuse root exactly. |
| glory | المجد | al-majd | High | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:24, 25 (×2 senses — see Section B for the distinct “glorious ones” sense in 1:8) | Reuse exactly for God’s own glory. |
| peace | السلام | al-salām | Medium | Salutation | 1:2 | Reuse exactly. |
Section B — New Terms Introduced by Jude (Proposed for Language Package Extension)
| English Term | Arabic Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Jude References | Rationale / Collision Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| contend (for the faith) | يجاهد / المجاهدة لأجل الإيمان | yujāhid / al-mujāhadah li-ajl al-īmān | Critical | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:3 | Cognate with the root underlying “jihad.” Established Van Dyck usage for this athletic-contest metaphor (cf. 1 Tim 6:12, 2 Tim 4:7), so it is the correct and traditional rendering — but in contemporary Arabic the term is overwhelmingly associated with armed struggle. Every occurrence requires explicit scaffolding clarifying this is nonviolent, doctrinal perseverance (an athlete’s discipline), never physical conflict. This is the single highest-stakes term in the curriculum. |
| delivered once for all (the faith) | المُسَلَّم مرة واحدة للأبد | al-musallam marratan wāḥidatan lil-abad | Critical | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:3 | Direct collision with Islamic naskh (abrogation) doctrine and the finality-of-revelation claim. Must be actively deployed as a bridge (a fixed, uncorrupted, guarded deposit — a value Muslim readers already hold) while locating that deposit in the first-century apostolic gospel, not open to later supersession by any subsequent claimant. |
| Savior | المخلّص | al-mukhalliṣ | Critical | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:25 | Shares root with baseline “salvation” (الخلاص). Exclusive ascription (“the only God our Savior… through Jesus Christ”) combines a genuine monotheistic bridge point with inseparable Christological mediation; the two must never be separated in teaching or translation. |
| Master (δεσπότης) | السيد (الوحيد) | al-Sayyid (al-waḥīd) | High | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:4 | Distinct from κύριος/الرب. Collides with “al-Sayyid” as the honorific title for descendants of Muhammad; retain the Greek’s own qualifier “only” (السيد الوحيد) at every occurrence to preserve the absolute-ownership/exclusivity sense and reduce confusion with the honorific usage. |
| lordship / dominion (κυριότης, rejected) | السيادة | al-siyādah | High | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:8 | Shares root directly with الرب; reinforces rather than dilutes doctrinal weight, but the referent (Christ’s own lordship vs. a lesser authority) is exegetically debated and must be clarified in teaching notes, not left ambiguous. |
| ungodly / ungodliness (ἀσεβής/ἀσέβεια) | الفجّار / الفجور | al-fujjār / al-fujūr | High | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:4, 15 (×2), 18 | Established Van Dyck term; shared vocabulary with Quranic usage (82:14), so the word itself is safe. The doctrinal risk is that these are insiders — professing members who “crept in” (1:4) — a specific insider-apostate category with no exact parallel in mainstream categories of external unbelief (kufr); must be taught explicitly. |
| kept / keep (τηρέω) | يحفظ / محفوظ | yaḥfaẕu / maḥfūẕ | High | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:1, 6, 13, 21, 24 | Structural keyword running through the entire letter with deliberate irony: the same verb describes believers “kept” by God (1:1, 21, 24) and darkness “kept/reserved” for the ungodly (1:6, 13). Track a single consistent Arabic root across all occurrences wherever natural so the irony remains visible to Arabic readers. Directly reinforces baseline “assurance_of_salvation” (Critical). |
| guard (φυλάσσω, near-synonym of τηρέω) | يحفظ / يحرس | yaḥfaẕu / yaḥrus | High | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:24 | Treat as functionally synonymous with τηρέω in the doxology’s climactic resolution of the letter’s “kept” motif; render with the same root where natural. |
| blameless | بلا عيب / بلا لوم | bilā ‘ayb / bilā lawm | Medium | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:24 | Positional, gifted status presented before God’s glory — parallel in function to baseline “imputed_righteousness” (Critical); must not be taught as sinless achievement via a favorable deeds-balance. |
| mercy | الرحمة | al-raḥmah | High | Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | 1:2, 21, 22, 23 | Distinct from baseline “grace” (النعمة), for which الرحمة was an explicitly rejected alternative — that rejection applies to grace, not to mercy’s own proper domain. Risk here: الرحمة alone, detached from “our Lord Jesus Christ” (present in 1:21), can default to a generic Quranic divine attribute (Ar-Raḥmān/Ar-Raḥīm) rather than mercy secured specifically through Christ’s mediatorial rescue. Always anchor to Christ in immediate context. |
| love (ἀγάπη) | المحبة | al-maḥabbah | Medium | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:2, 12, 21 | Must convey covenantal, self-giving love (God’s love for believers, and the “love feasts” of communal fellowship), not romantic or Sufi mystical-union (‘ishq) love. |
| eternal life | الحياة الأبدية | al-ḥayāh al-abadiyyah | High | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:21 | Must be distinguished from Jannah attained through a favorable deeds-balance (mīzān); here it is the settled outcome of being “kept” by God and Christ’s mercy — an inheritance already secured, not a probable future reward. |
| wavering / doubting (διακρινόμενος) | المرتابون / المتشككون | al-murtābūn / al-mutashakkikūn | Medium | Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | 1:22 | A distinct, third category — vulnerable uncertain members, not confirmed false teachers — to be treated with compassion, not condemnation. Do not conflate with ἀσεβεῖς. |
| snatch (from fire) / rescue | يختلس / يخطف من النار | yakhtalisu / yakhṭafu min al-nār | Medium | Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | 1:23 | Vivid urgent-rescue imagery reinforcing (not diluting) the effective, decisive sense of الخلاص. |
| polluted garment | الثوب المدنّس (من الجسد) | al-thawb al-mudannas | Medium | Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering | 1:23 | Figurative moral-corruption imagery; caution against readers defaulting to ritual-purity (najāsa) categories rather than the text’s moral/spiritual sense. |
| angels | ملائكة | malā’ika | Medium | Old Testament Warnings as Types | 1:6 | Shared vocabulary (one of Islam’s six articles of faith), but mainstream theology generally holds angels incapable of disobedience — Jude’s premise of rebellious, judged angels needs explicit teaching, not assumed shared ground. |
| devil | إبليس | Iblīs | Medium | Old Testament Warnings as Types | 1:9 | Shared referent with the Quranic Iblīs, though the narrative in 1:9 (a dispute over Moses’ body, drawn from Jewish tradition) has no Islamic-source counterpart; flag as a source/canon issue, not a lexical one. |
| archangel Michael | رئيس الملائكة ميخائيل | ra’īs al-malā’ika Mīkā’īl | Medium | Old Testament Warnings as Types | 1:9 | Mīkā’īl appears in Quran 2:98 — a genuine shared figure — but the Quranic association (provision/rain) differs from this text’s role (heavenly contender); supply the biblical role explicitly. |
| Enoch (prophesied) | أخنوخ (تنبأ) | Akhnūkh (tanabba’a) | High | Old Testament Warnings as Types; Inspiration of Scripture | 1:14–15 | Jude quotes 1 Enoch, a non-canonical Jewish apocryphal writing, as prophecy. Teaching notes must clarify this does not grant 1 Enoch canonical status, and is categorically distinct from Islamic wahy (closed, verbatim, singular-canon revelation); do not let this be read as conceding a “lost/multiple scriptures” framework. |
| judgment (κρίσις/κρίμα) | دينونة | dīnūnah | Medium | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:4, 6, 9, 15 | Shares root د-ي-ن with الدين (“religion/judgment”) and Quranic يوم الدين — a positive lexical bridge. Note Jude’s two-stage pattern (sentence already assigned to fallen angels, execution still future) differs from a single-event Islamic eschatological judgment day and should be explained. |
| type / example (δεῖγμα) | عبرة / مثال | ’ibrah / mithāl | Medium | Old Testament Warnings as Types | 1:7 | عبرة is a well-understood Arabic hermeneutical category (cf. Quranic usage), a workable bridge; the underlying typological reading (past judgment prefiguring future/other judgment) should be taught explicitly rather than assumed. |
| proper names: Cain, Balaam, Korah | قايين، بلعام، قورح | Qāyīn, Bal’ām, Qōraḥ | Medium/High | Old Testament Warnings as Types | 1:11 | قايين differs from the Quranic Qābīl; بلعام has no Quranic counterpart; قورح risks conflation with the differently-emphasized Quranic Qārūn (associated with wealth/pride). Supply connections and distinctions explicitly for each. |
| Sodom and Gomorrah | سدوم وعمورة | Sadūm wa ‘Amūrah | Medium | Old Testament Warnings as Types | 1:7 | Shares narrative core with the Quranic “people of Lot” (qawm Lūṭ) but named differently; supply the connection explicitly rather than assuming recognition. |
| woe | الويل | al-wayl | Low | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:11 | Shared prophetic-judgment genre marker with Quranic usage (e.g., 83:1); low collision risk, strong compatible bridge. |
| scoffers | المستهزئون | al-mustahzi’ūn | Low | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:18 | Standard vocabulary; parallels 2 Peter 3:3. |
| worldly / soulish (ψυχικός) | نفسانيون | nafsāniyyūn | Medium | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:19 | Denotes the absence of the Spirit’s indwelling life, not merely moral failure; needs an explanatory gloss distinguishing it from ordinary “carnal/sinful.” |
| devoid of the Spirit | لا روح لهم / ليس فيهم الروح | lā rūḥa lahum | High | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:19 | Contextually the Holy Spirit (contrasted with 1:20’s explicit “praying in the Holy Spirit”); must not be softened to a generic “spirit/vitality” or misread as an anthropological rather than pneumatological/soteriological claim. |
| build up / edify | يبني (أنفسهم) | yabnī (anfusahum) | Low | Kept by God and Presented Blameless | 1:20 | Reuses baseline-compatible edification vocabulary; low doctrinal risk. |
| slave/servant (δοῦλος) | عبد | ’abd | Medium | Contending for the Faith Once Delivered | 1:1 | Established Van Dyck convention; resonates positively with the common Islamic self-designation “‘abd Allāh,” a workable bridge provided the sense of owned possession (not voluntary hired service) is retained. |
| majesty (μεγαλωσύνη) | العظمة | al-‘aẕamah | Low | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:25 | Standard doxological vocabulary. |
| dominion / might (κράτος) | القدرة | al-qudrah | Low | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:25 | Standard doxological vocabulary. |
| authority (ἐξουσία) | السلطان | al-sulṭān | Low-Medium | Doxology and God’s Preserving Power | 1:25 | Standard vocabulary; keep consistent with any other doxological occurrences elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| glorious ones / dignities (δόξαι, plural sense) | أصحاب المجد / الكائنات المكرَّمة | aṣḥāb al-majd | Medium | Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers | 1:8 | A distinct sense of δόξα from baseline “glory” (God’s own radiant honor) — here denoting created dignitaries/angelic beings. Do not conflate the two senses in translation notes. |
Section C — Risk Summary for Jude-Specific Extension
| Risk Tier | Count (new terms, Section B) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 3 (contend for the faith; delivered once for all; Savior) | Human theologian, every occurrence |
| High | 8 (Master/δεσπότης; lordship/κυριότης; ungodly; kept/τηρέω; guard/φυλάσσω; mercy; eternal life; devoid of the Spirit; Enoch/prophesied) — note: 9 listed above; count reflects all High-tier new terms | Human theologian |
| Medium | ~18 | Native speaker review |
| Low | ~5 | Automated review |
Note on Section C count: The apparent discrepancy in the High-tier count (8 vs. 9 items) reflects that “Enoch (prophesied)” is a doctrinal/canon-level flag layered onto a proper noun rather than a purely lexical entry; it is retained in the High tier for review-routing purposes regardless of enumeration method.
This glossary extends, and must never contradict, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. Upon Language Package integration (Phase 1 Step 9), all Section B entries should be added as new keyed entries in both files, incrementing the translation memory version number per the existing enforcement protocol.
Critical Risk Terms
Contend For The Faith
Approved rendering: يجاهد / المجاهدة لأجل الإيمان
Transliteration: yujāhid / al-mujāhadah li-ajl al-īmān
Doctrine: Contending for the Faith Once Delivered
Rejected alternatives: كافح, نافح, دافع عن (as a softened substitute)
Original: ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι
Category: Faith
NEW. The single highest-stakes term in the Jude curriculum. Established Van Dyck usage renders ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι with the جهد/جهاد root family (cf. 1 Tim 6:12, 2 Tim 4:7) — traditional, not novel — but this root is overwhelmingly associated with armed/political struggle in contemporary Arabic. Every occurrence (1:3) requires mandatory scaffolding: an athlete’s nonviolent, doctrinal-perseverance contest, never physical or political struggle. كافح/نافح are rejected as primary renderings (weaker doctrinal pedigree, secular-struggle connotations); دافع عن is rejected as an under-translation that loses the athletic-agony metaphor.
Delivered Once For All
Approved rendering: المُسَلَّم مرة واحدة للأبد
Transliteration: al-musallam marratan wāḥidatan lil-abad
Doctrine: Contending for the Faith Once Delivered
Original: ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ
Category: Faith
NEW. No single Arabic word conveys ‘handed down as a completed, closed transmission’; this compound is required. Direct collision with Islamic naskh (abrogation) and the Seal-of-the-Prophets finality claim. Must be actively deployed as a bridge — a fixed, guarded, uncorrupted deposit, a value already prized by Muslim-background readers — while locating that deposit specifically in the first-century apostolic gospel about Christ, closed to later revision by any subsequent claimant. The root س-ل-م shares vocabulary with hadith-transmission concepts (tasleem/silsila), a genuine positive bridge if handled deliberately.
Father
Approved rendering: الآب
Transliteration: al-Āb
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘father’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:1, believers’ fundamental identity is ‘loved in God the Father’ — the relational ground for the whole letter’s appeal. Jude does not use ‘Son of God’ directly, but the Father-believer relational category still carries the same tanzih-related sensitivity documented in the baseline.
God
Approved rendering: الله
Transliteration: Allāh
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘god’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:25’s ‘the only God our Savior’ is a genuine monotheistic bridge point (tawhid-resonant) that must remain inseparable from ‘through Jesus Christ our Lord’ immediately following it — never excerpted or paraphrased alone.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: الروح القدس
Transliteration: al-Rūḥ al-Qudus
Doctrine: Holy Spirit Indwelling as Marker of Authenticity
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘holy_spirit’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: believers pray ‘in the Holy Spirit’ (1:20) while the false teachers are described as devoid of the Spirit (1:19, see ‘devoid_of_spirit’ below). Must not be conflated with the Quranic identification of ‘the holy spirit’ with the created angel Jibril; Jude’s contrast is Trinitarian and soteriological.
Jesus
Approved rendering: يسوع
Transliteration: Yasū’
Doctrine: Exclusive Lordship and Mastery of Christ (κύριος/δεσπότης)
Rejected alternatives: عيسى
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘jesus’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: never عيسى; retain يسوع consistently at 1:1, 4, 17, 21, 25.
Lord
Approved rendering: الرب
Transliteration: al-Rabb
Doctrine: Exclusive Lordship and Mastery of Christ (κύριος/δεσπότης)
Rejected alternatives: السيد, المولى
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘lord’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: applied to Jesus at 1:4, 17, 21, 25, and to God/the Lord in OT-citation contexts at 1:5, 9, 14. Jude 1:4 additionally pairs this with the distinct title δεσπότης (see ‘master_despotes’ below), both ascribed exclusively (‘only’) to Christ — never softened to السيد/المولى alone.
Messiah
Approved rendering: المسيح
Transliteration: al-Masīh
Doctrine: Exclusive Lordship and Mastery of Christ (κύριος/δεσπότης)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘messiah’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: always joined to the name Jesus as a single, settled identity (‘Jesus Christ,’ 1:1, 4, 17, 21, 25), never presented as merely one of several honored figures. The same pre-loaded Quranic ‘Isa al-Masih narrative risk documented in the baseline applies to every occurrence.
Salvation
Approved rendering: الخلاص
Transliteration: al-khalāṣ
Doctrine: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering
Rejected alternatives: النجاة, الفوز بالجنة
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘salvation’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:3’s ‘common salvation’ is the shared, settled deliverance being defended; 1:23’s ‘save, snatching them out of the fire’ reinforces the baseline sense of effective, decisive, once-for-all rescue, not a probabilistic outcome pending a deeds-balance.
Savior
Approved rendering: المخلّص
Transliteration: al-mukhalliṣ
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation
NEW. Shares its root with باseline الخلاص. Occurs at 1:25, ‘the only God our Savior… through Jesus Christ our Lord.’ The exclusive monotheistic ascription is a genuine bridge point resonant with tawhid, but must never be separated from ‘through Jesus Christ our Lord,’ which supplies its indispensable Christological content — treat the whole verse as one indivisible doxological unit for translation-memory enforcement purposes.
High Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: الرسول
Transliteration: al-rasūl
Doctrine: Apostleship and Apostolic Authority
Rejected alternatives: المبعوث, التلميذ المرسل
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘apostle’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:17 appeals to apostolic prediction of coming scoffers as settled precedent. Distinguish this NT office from the Islamic prophetic office and its finality/seal claim (khatam an-nabiyyin), especially given the letter’s adjacent Enoch citation (1:14-15), which raises the broader question of authoritative voices.
Called
Approved rendering: المدعوون
Transliteration: al-mad’uwwūn
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Rejected alternatives: المُنتخَبون
Original: κλητός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘called’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:1 identifies believers as recipients of God’s own sovereign summons — direction of address matters; must not be read as human da’wah-style invitation of others to religion.
Crept In Secretly
Approved rendering: تسللوا / دخلوا خفية
Transliteration: tasallalū / dakhalū khafiyyatan
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Original: παρεισέδυσαν
Category: Judgment
NEW. Renders παρεισέδυσαν (1:4), slipped in secretly/infiltrated unnoticed. The false teachers are INSIDERS, professing members who infiltrated the community, not open external opponents. This ‘insider apostate’ category has no exact parallel in mainstream Islamic categories of kufr (external unbelief) or nifaq (hypocrisy) and needs explicit teaching, not silent assumption of shared ground.
Devoid Of Spirit
Approved rendering: لا روح لهم / ليس فيهم الروح
Transliteration: lā rūḥa lahum
Doctrine: Holy Spirit Indwelling as Marker of Authenticity
Original: πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες (1:19), lacking the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence, contrasted with believers ‘praying in the Holy Spirit’ (1:20). Although the phrase lacks the adjective ‘holy,’ context requires it be understood as the same Holy Spirit as 1:20. Must not be softened to a generic ‘spirit/vitality’ reading, nor misread as an anthropological (rather than pneumatological/soteriological) claim.
Enoch
Approved rendering: أخنوخ (تنبأ)
Transliteration: Akhnūkh (tanabba’a)
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: Ἑνὼχ … προεφήτευσεν
Category: Inspiration of Scripture
NEW. Renders Ἑνὼχ… προεφήτευσεν at 1:14-15, where Jude directly quotes 1 Enoch 1:9, a non-canonical Jewish apocryphal writing, and calls it prophecy. Teaching notes must clarify: this does not grant 1 Enoch canonical status equal to Scripture; is categorically distinct from Islamic wahy (verbatim-dictated, singular, closed-canon revelation); and must not be taught as expanding the canon or conceding a ‘multiple/lost scriptures’ framework adjacent to tahrif claims.
Eternal Fire
Approved rendering: نار أبدية
Transliteration: nār abadiyyah
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: πυρὸς αἰωνίου
Category: Judgment
NEW. Renders πυρὸς αἰωνίου (1:7), the standing judgment exhibited by Sodom and Gomorrah, functioning as a TYPE of the false teachers’ impending judgment (cf. 1:13). Compatible with Islamic eschatological imagery of hellfire (nar), but here it functions typologically, pointing to a specific impending judgment, not solely a generic final Judgment-Day statement; keep the typological function visible in surrounding teaching material.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: الحياة الأبدية
Transliteration: al-ḥayāh al-abadiyyah
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Renders ζωὴ αἰώνιος at 1:21, the certain future outcome of being kept in God’s love and awaiting Christ’s mercy. Must be distinguished from Jannah attained through a favorable deeds-balance (mizan); here it is the settled outcome of God’s preservation and Christ’s mercy — a secured inheritance, not a probable future reward pending an uncertain final accounting.
Faith
Approved rendering: الإيمان
Transliteration: al-īmān
Doctrine: Contending for the Faith Once Delivered
Rejected alternatives: الاعتقاد, الثقة
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘faith’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: at 1:3 and 1:20, πίστις shifts toward denoting the fixed, closed body of apostolic doctrine (‘the faith… once for all delivered’) rather than primarily relational trust. This sense-shift must be flagged explicitly at first occurrence (1:3) without abandoning the baseline relational-trust sense elsewhere in the curriculum.
Glory
Approved rendering: المجد
Transliteration: al-majd
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Rejected alternatives: النور الإلهي
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘glory’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: ascribed to God through Christ in the closing doxology (1:24-25). Note the DISTINCT plural sense at 1:8 (δόξαι, ‘glorious ones’), denoting created dignitaries, not God’s own glory — see ‘glorious_ones’ below; the two senses must never be conflated.
Grace
Approved rendering: النعمة
Transliteration: al-ni’mah
Doctrine: Grace Perverted into License
Rejected alternatives: الفضل, الرحمة
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘grace’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: at 1:4 the false teachers ‘turn the grace of our God into licentiousness’ — النعمة itself must be defended as good; the corruption is in their distortion of it, not in the doctrine of grace. Note الرحمة remains a rejected alternative for grace specifically, though it is the correct, separate, established rendering for ‘mercy’ (see ‘mercy’ entry below) — the two rejections operate in different domains and must not be confused.
Guard Phylasso
Approved rendering: يحفظ / يحرس
Transliteration: yaḥfaẕu / yaḥrus
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Original: φυλάσσω
Category: Salvation
NEW. Renders φυλάσσω, a near-synonym of τηρέω, in the doxology’s climactic ‘him who is able to guard you’ (1:24). Render with the same root (ح-ف-ظ) as τηρέω wherever contextually natural, so the doxology reads as the deliberate resolution of the letter’s entire ‘kept/keep’ motif.
Israel
Approved rendering: إسرائيل
Transliteration: Isrā’īl
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘israel’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:5’s Exodus-generation warning (‘the Lord… afterward destroyed those who did not believe’) refers to this people; prefer the descriptive phrase ‘الشعب الذي أنقذه [الرب] من أرض مصر’ over the bare proper noun in this specific verse to avoid triggering contemporary political associations in a judgment-warning context, per 06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md §1.3.
Kept Tereo
Approved rendering: يحفظ / محفوظ
Transliteration: yaḥfaẕu / maḥfūẕ
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Original: τηρέω
Category: Salvation
NEW. Renders τηρέω, Jude’s structural keyword, describing believers ‘kept’ by God (1:1, 21, 24) and darkness ‘kept/reserved’ for the ungodly (1:6, 13) — a deliberate letter-wide irony. Track a single consistent Arabic root (ح-ف-ظ) across ALL FIVE occurrences wherever grammatically natural; varying the root for stylistic reasons destroys the irony even though no individual verse would be mistranslated. Directly reinforces the baseline ‘assurance_of_salvation’ doctrine (Critical).
Korah
Approved rendering: قورح
Transliteration: Qōraḥ
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Rejected alternatives: قارون (the Quranic Qārūn, differently themed around wealth and pride)
Original: Κόρε
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders Κόρε (1:11), third OT type-figure — rebellion against divinely appointed leadership (Numbers 16). The proper noun قورح risks conflation with the phonetically similar Quranic figure قارون, associated primarily with wealth and pride rather than specifically priestly/leadership rebellion. Distinguish explicitly at every occurrence; silent mental substitution is a high-likelihood risk given the phonetic proximity.
Lordship Kyriotes
Approved rendering: السيادة
Transliteration: al-siyādah
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Rejected alternatives: الربوبية
Original: κυριότης
Category: Christology
NEW. Renders κυριότης at 1:8 (‘reject authority… blaspheme the glorious ones’). Shares its root directly with الرب, reinforcing rather than diluting doctrinal weight, but the referent (Christ’s own lordship vs. a lesser created/angelic authority) is exegetically debated and must be flagged for theologian resolution rather than resolved silently in translation. الربوبية is rejected as it imports a full Islamic technical-theology term (God’s unique lordship-attribute, rububiyyah) not appropriate here.
Master Despotes
Approved rendering: السيد الوحيد
Transliteration: al-Sayyid al-waḥīd
Doctrine: Exclusive Lordship and Mastery of Christ (κύριος/δεσπότης)
Rejected alternatives: السيد (without the qualifier الوحيد)
Original: δεσπότης
Category: Christology
NEW. Renders δεσπότης, distinct from κύριος/الرب, at 1:4’s ‘our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.’ السيد alone collides with its use as the honorific title for descendants of Muhammad (Sayyid/Sharif) and as generic ‘Mr./sir’ in everyday address, risking a human-honorific reading rather than the absolute-ownership/sovereign-master claim intended. The Greek’s own qualifier ‘only’ (μόνον) must be retained at every occurrence — السيد الوحيد — never used unqualified.
Mercy
Approved rendering: الرحمة
Transliteration: al-raḥmah
Doctrine: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Mercy
NEW. Renders ἔλεος across Jude’s greeting triad (1:2), believers’ eschatological hope (1:21), and the church’s compassionate posture toward the wavering (1:22-23). Distinct from baseline ‘grace’ (النعمة), for which الرحمة was an explicitly rejected alternative — that rejection concerns grace’s own domain, not mercy’s proper use here. Risk: الرحمة alone, detached from ‘our Lord Jesus Christ’ (present in 1:21), defaults to a generic invocation of Ar-Rahman/Ar-Rahim rather than mercy secured specifically through Christ’s mediatorial rescue. Must never stand more than one clause away from its Christological anchor in any occurrence.
Sin
Approved rendering: الخطية
Transliteration: al-khaṭīyah
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Rejected alternatives: الذنب, الإثم
Original: ἁμαρτωλός / ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘sin’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: the root underlies ‘sinners’ in the climactic double indictment at 1:15, ‘ungodly sinners’ (ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀσεβεῖς) — combined with الفجّار; the doubling must not dilute either term’s force.
Ungodly
Approved rendering: الفجّار / الفجور
Transliteration: al-fujjār / al-fujūr
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Rejected alternatives: الكفار
Original: ἀσεβής / ἀσέβεια
Category: Judgment
NEW. Established Van Dyck term for ἀσεβής/ἀσέβεια, Jude’s defining, recurring label for the false teachers (1:4, 15 [×2], 18). Shares vocabulary with Quranic usage (82:14), so the word itself is safe — but الكفار is explicitly rejected as an alternative because it denotes external unbelief (kufr), whereas Jude’s category is professing, covenant-community INSIDERS who ‘crept in’ (see ‘crept_in_secretly’ below) and are already appointed to judgment. This insider-apostasy category has no exact parallel in the mainstream kufr/nifaq binary and must be taught explicitly.
Medium Risk Terms
Angels
Approved rendering: ملائكة
Transliteration: malā’ika
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: ἄγγελοι
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders ἄγγελοι at 1:6, specifically those who abandoned their position and are already held for judgment. Shared vocabulary with Islam’s six articles of faith, but mainstream Sunni angelology generally holds angels incapable of disobedience (unlike jinn); Jude’s premise of rebellious, judged angels directly contradicts this default and requires explicit teaching, not assumed shared ground.
Archangel Michael
Approved rendering: رئيس الملائكة ميخائيل
Transliteration: ra’īs al-malā’ika Mīkā’īl
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελος
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελος at 1:9, who defers judgment of the devil to the Lord rather than pronouncing it himself — a model of restraint contrasted with the false teachers’ reckless slander (1:8, 10). Mika’il appears in Quran 2:98 — a genuine shared figure — but the Quranic association (provision/rain) differs from this text’s role as heavenly contender; supply the distinct biblical role explicitly.
Balaam
Approved rendering: بلعام
Transliteration: Bal’ām
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: Βαλαάμ
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders Βαλαάμ (1:11), second OT type-figure — prophetic ministry corrupted by financial motive. بلعام has no direct Quranic counterpart, so this figure will be unfamiliar to readers without prior OT exposure; supply background explicitly.
Blameless
Approved rendering: بلا عيب
Transliteration: bilā ‘ayb
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Rejected alternatives: كامل (read as self-achieved perfection)
Original: ἄμωμος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders ἄμωμος (1:24), believers’ certain future status when presented before God’s glory. A gifted, forensic-adjacent status parallel in function to baseline ‘imputed_righteousness’ (Critical); must be anchored grammatically to ‘القادر أن يحفظكم… ويقيمكم بلا عيب’ as a single act of God, never as a standalone adjective implying moral achievement via a favorable deeds-balance.
Cain
Approved rendering: قايين
Transliteration: Qāyīn
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Rejected alternatives: قابيل (the Quranic form)
Original: Κάϊν
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders Κάϊν (1:11), first of three OT type-figures. The established Arabic Bible form قايين differs from the Quranic form قابيل; readers familiar with the Quranic Cain-and-Abel account may not immediately recognize ‘Qayin’ as the same figure. Supply the connection explicitly at every occurrence.
Devil
Approved rendering: إبليس
Transliteration: Iblīs
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: διάβολος
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders διάβολος at 1:9, the figure Michael disputes with over Moses’ body — a narrative drawn from Jewish tradition (the Assumption of Moses), not the OT canon. Established, pre-Islamic Christian Arabic usage; shares its referent (though not this narrative’s details) with the Quranic Iblis. Needs a canon-and-authority note similar to the Enoch citation, since the underlying source material has no Islamic-source counterpart.
Divisive Ones
Approved rendering: المفرّقون
Transliteration: al-mufarriqūn
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Original: οἱ ἀποδιορίζοντες
Category: Church
NEW. Renders οἱ ἀποδιορίζοντες (1:19), those who cause divisions/factions within the church, ironically contrasted with the unified ‘common salvation’ of 1:3. Rare Greek word; render for clarity of sense (division-causing) rather than a literal calque.
Dreamers
Approved rendering: يهذون بأحلامهم / أصحاب رؤى
Transliteration: yahdhūna bi-aḥlāmihim / aṣḥāb ru’ā
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Original: ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι
Category: Judgment
NEW. Renders ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι (1:8), the false teachers grounding their authority in private dream-visions rather than the fixed apostolic deposit (1:3). Flag alongside the Enoch/inspiration-of-Scripture doctrine: the contrast is between claimed private revelation and the fixed, closed apostolic deposit already delivered.
Glorious Ones
Approved rendering: أصحاب المجد / الكائنات المكرَّمة
Transliteration: aṣḥāb al-majd
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Original: δόξαι
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders δόξαι (plural, 1:8), glorious ones/dignities — exalted (likely angelic) beings the false teachers blaspheme. A DISTINCT sense of δόξα from the baseline ‘glory’ entry (God’s own radiant honor); must never be conflated with المجد used of God himself.
Holy
Approved rendering: مقدس
Transliteration: muqaddas
Doctrine: Sainthood (Corporate Holiness of Believers)
Rejected alternatives: طاهر
Original: ἅγιος (superlative ἁγιωτάτῃ)
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘holy’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: 1:20 applies a rare Greek superlative (‘your most holy faith’) to ‘the faith’ itself, not to persons. The Arabic superlative (أقدس) construction requires a naturalness check and must not imply tiers of holiness among believers or portions of doctrine.
Judgment
Approved rendering: دينونة
Transliteration: dīnūnah
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Original: κρίσις / κρίμα
Category: Judgment
NEW. Renders κρίσις/κρίμα (1:4, 6, 9, 15), judicial sentence or reckoning. Shares root د-ي-ن with الدين and the Quranic يوم الدين — a positive lexical bridge — but Jude’s two-stage pattern (sentence already assigned to fallen angels, execution still future) differs from a single-event Islamic eschatological Day and should be explained, not assumed compatible.
Love Agape
Approved rendering: المحبة
Transliteration: al-maḥabbah
Doctrine: Kept by God and Presented Blameless
Rejected alternatives: العشق
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἀγάπη in the greeting triad (1:2), the sphere believers are commanded to keep themselves in (1:21), and the name of the early church’s communal meals (1:12, see ‘love_feasts’). Must convey covenantal, self-giving love, not romantic or Sufi mystical-union love (‘ishq, العشق — explicitly rejected).
Love Feasts
Approved rendering: ولائم المحبة
Transliteration: walā’im al-maḥabbah
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship and the Love Feast
Original: ἀγάπαι
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἀγάπαι (1:12), communal fellowship meals of the early church, often linked to the Lord’s Supper, which the false teachers corrupt from within. A compound built on المحبة; needs a brief historical-cultural gloss for readers unfamiliar with the early-church love-feast practice.
Peace
Approved rendering: السلام
Transliteration: al-salām
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Rejected alternatives: الأمان, الطمأنينة
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘peace’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: part of the expanded greeting triad in 1:2 (mercy, peace, and love, multiplied).
Polluted Garment
Approved rendering: الثوب المدنّس (من الجسد)
Transliteration: al-thawb al-mudannas
Doctrine: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering
Original: τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς σαρκὸς ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα
Category: Mercy
NEW. Renders τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς σαρκὸς ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα (1:23). Caution: this imagery risks being read primarily through ritual-purity categories (najāsa in Islamic fiqh, requiring wudu/ghusl) rather than the text’s moral/spiritual corruption sense. Mandatory gloss: symbolic moral defilement, not a ritual-purity instruction.
Saints
Approved rendering: القديسون
Transliteration: al-qiddīsūn
Doctrine: Sainthood (Corporate Holiness of Believers)
Rejected alternatives: الأولياء
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package (baseline ‘saints’ entry, unchanged). Jude-specific application: at 1:3 denotes all believers, corporate and non-hierarchical — avoid الأولياء (Sufi venerated-saints class). Flag the DISTINCT referent at 1:14 (‘his holy myriads’), which likely denotes angelic hosts, not believers; do not conflate the two senses in translation or teaching notes.
Servant Doulos
Approved rendering: عبد
Transliteration: ‘abd
Doctrine: Contending for the Faith Once Delivered
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Church
NEW. Renders δοῦλος (1:1), Jude’s self-designation as an owned slave, not a hired/voluntary servant — framing his authority as derivative from Christ. Established Van Dyck convention (cf. Romans 1:1’s بولس عبد). عبد resonates positively with the common Islamic self-designation ”abd Allah,’ a workable bridge, provided the full sense of owned possession (not merely employed service) is retained.
Snatch From Fire
Approved rendering: يختلس / يخطف من النار
Transliteration: yakhtalisu / yakhṭafu min al-nār
Doctrine: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering
Rejected alternatives: ساعدوهم بلطف (a softened, gentle-help substitute)
Original: σῴζετε … ἁρπάζοντες ἐκ πυρός
Category: Mercy
NEW. Renders σῴζετε… ἁρπάζοντες ἐκ πυρός (1:23), urgent forceful rescue from imminent danger, echoing Amos 4:11/Zechariah 3:2. Shares its root with baseline الخلاص; reinforces (not dilutes) the doctrine of salvation as urgent, effective, once-for-all deliverance. A softened ‘help them gently’ substitute is rejected as it loses the imagery’s urgency.
Sodom And Gomorrah
Approved rendering: سدوم وعمورة
Transliteration: Sadūm wa ‘Amūrah
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα (1:7), a standing exhibit of eternal-fire judgment. Shares narrative core with the Quran’s ‘people of Lot’ (qawm Lūṭ) but named differently; supply the connection explicitly rather than assuming automatic recognition.
Type Example
Approved rendering: عبرة / مثال
Transliteration: ‘ibrah / mithāl
Doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel, Angels, Sodom)
Original: δεῖγμα
Category: Old Testament Types
NEW. Renders δεῖγμα (1:7), a visible, standing example/exhibit. عبرة is a well-understood Arabic hermeneutical category (cf. Quranic usage), a workable bridge; the underlying typological reading (past judgment prefiguring future/other judgment) should be taught explicitly rather than assumed a native reading habit.
Wavering
Approved rendering: المرتابون / المتشككون
Transliteration: al-murtābūn / al-mutashakkikūn
Doctrine: Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering
Original: διακρινόμενος
Category: Mercy
NEW. Renders διακρινόμενος (1:22), a distinct third category of persons — vulnerable, doubting members, not confirmed false teachers — who need compassionate rescue. Must be clearly distinguished from الفجّار (see ‘ungodly’); this group is treated with mercy, not judgment, because their condition is uncertainty, not settled rebellion.
Worldly Psychikos
Approved rendering: نفسانيون
Transliteration: nafsāniyyūn
Doctrine: Holy Spirit Indwelling as Marker of Authenticity
Rejected alternatives: أهل الشهوات الجسدية
Original: ψυχικός
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Renders ψυχικός (1:19), governed by natural human life/instinct rather than the Spirit. أهل الشهوات الجسدية is rejected because it collapses Jude’s specific pneumatological claim into a generic moral-failure statement. نفسانيون requires a mandatory explanatory gloss distinguishing it from ordinary ‘carnal/sinful’ — it specifically denotes the absence of the Spirit’s indwelling life.
Low Risk Terms
Authority
Approved rendering: السلطان
Transliteration: al-sulṭān
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Doxology
NEW. Renders ἐξουσία (1:25), the final term in the closing doxology’s four-fold ascription. Standard vocabulary; keep consistent with any other doxological occurrences elsewhere in the curriculum.
Dominion Might
Approved rendering: القدرة
Transliteration: al-qudrah
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Original: κράτος
Category: Doxology
NEW. Renders κράτος (1:25), part of the closing doxology’s four-fold ascription. Standard doxological vocabulary.
Edify
Approved rendering: يبني (أنفسهم)
Transliteration: yabnī (anfusahum)
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: ἐποικοδομοῦντες
Category: Church
NEW. Renders ἐποικοδομοῦντες (1:20), the positive pastoral counter-instruction to the false teachers’ destructive infiltration. Ties to the baseline doctrine ‘mutual_edification’ (Low risk); reuse compatible vocabulary.
Majesty
Approved rendering: العظمة
Transliteration: al-‘aẕamah
Doctrine: Doxology and God’s Preserving Power
Original: μεγαλωσύνη
Category: Doxology
NEW. Renders μεγαλωσύνη (1:25), part of the closing doxology’s four-fold ascription of God’s supreme attributes through Christ. Standard doxological vocabulary, low independent collision risk.
Scoffers
Approved rendering: المستهزئون
Transliteration: al-mustahzi’ūn
Doctrine: Eschatological Scoffers in the Last Days
Original: ἐμπαῖκται
Category: Judgment
NEW. Renders ἐμπαῖκται (1:18), mockers of religious truth/eschatological expectation, foretold by the apostles. Standard, low-risk NT vocabulary, paralleling 2 Peter 3:3.
Woe
Approved rendering: الويل
Transliteration: al-wayl
Doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers
Original: Οὐαί
Category: Judgment
NEW. Renders Οὐαί (1:11), a prophetic judgment-pronouncement formula opening the roll call of type-figures. Arabic shares this exact prophetic-woe genre with the Quran (e.g., 83:1) — a strong, compatible bridge; low collision risk.
