Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Ephesians (Full Book, Chapters 1–6)
Purpose
This document is the full-book doctrine matrix for the Ephesians curriculum, covering every chapter from 1:1 to 6:24. It is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (Ephesians v1): the same 34 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing appear below, organized chapter-by-chapter rather than doctrine-by-doctrine, so that Phase 2 processing can confirm full-book coverage. Ephesians 2:1–10 (Salvation by Grace through Faith / Good Works as Fruit Not Root / Universal Spiritual Deadness / Assurance and Heavenly Position) is the curriculum’s theological anchor but is not the boundary of scope — every chapter is analyzed below, and sections that carry no independent new doctrinal weight beyond what is already tabulated are explicitly marked “reviewed, no new doctrine” rather than silently omitted.
Chapter 1 (1:1–23) — Blessing, Election, and Christ’s Supremacy
| Section | Doctrine (registry key) | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1–2 | Holiness and Sainthood | 1:1 | High | القديسون must read as a corporate designation for all believers, never أولياء (Sufi venerated-saints class). | Human theologian |
| 1:3–6 | Election and Predestination in Christ | 1:4–5 | Critical | ”Chose us… before the foundation of the world” parallels al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẕ/qadar; must be taught as God’s specific, gracious, Christ-centered redemptive purpose, not exhaustive impersonal determinism. | Human theologian |
| 1:5 | Adoption into God’s Family | 1:5 | Critical | Predestined adoption to full son-status directly contradicts Qur’an 33:4-5’s denial of adopted sons’ filial/inheritance status. | Human theologian |
| 1:6–7 | Grace | 1:6–7 | High | النعمة (“riches of his grace”) must be reinforced as unearned favor, not fadl/rahmah responsive to prior merit. | Human theologian |
| 1:7 | Reconciliation through the Cross (redemption clause) | 1:7 (“redemption through his blood”) | Critical | Presupposes the historical crucifixion and substitutionary atonement, both denied by mainstream Islamic doctrine (Qur’an 4:157, 6:164); requires apologetic scaffolding before دم المسيح carries its intended weight. | Human theologian |
| 1:9–10 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 1:9–10 | Critical | السر must not be conflated with Qur’anic al-ghayb (unseen knowledge reserved to Allah alone, 27:65); Paul’s mystery is disclosed, the theological opposite of ghayb. | Human theologian |
| 1:11, 1:14 | Inheritance of the Saints | 1:11, 1:14 | High | الميراث must be distinguished from the codified, gender-differentiated fixed-share inheritance of Islamic law (Qur’an 4:11-12); this is an unearned, equal, full inheritance for all “sons” in Christ. | Human theologian |
| 1:13 | Sanctification and Filling with the Spirit (sealing) | 1:13 (“sealed with the Holy Spirit”) | High | Presupposes the Spirit’s full divine personhood, distinct from the angelic (Jibrīl) reading of “al-Rūḥ al-Qudus” in mainstream tafsir of the identical Quranic phrase. | Human theologian |
| 1:15–19 | Prayer and Intercession | 1:16–19 | High | Paul’s intercessory prayer for the readers is a distinct, complementary practice to Christ’s own exclusive intercession (baseline); must not be conflated with a plural-intercessor Islamic shafā’ah framework. | Human theologian |
| 1:18 | Divine Calling | 1:18 | High | ”Hope of his calling” must retain the God-to-human summons direction, opposite of da’wah’s human-to-human invitation to Islam. | Human theologian |
| 1:18 | Inheritance of the Saints (cross-reference) | 1:18 | High | See above (1:11, 1:14). | Human theologian |
| 1:19–21 | Deity and Lordship of Christ / Resurrection and Ascension of Christ | 1:19–21 | Critical | God’s power seen in raising and seating Christ “far above all rule and authority” presupposes the historical crucifixion (denied in Qur’an 4:157); every occurrence needs apologetic scaffolding, not just correct vocabulary. | Human theologian |
| 1:22 | Headship of Christ | 1:22 | High | الرأس (“head over all things to the church”) must convey supreme, loving authority; establishes the pattern later applied to marriage (5:23), so early consistent framing matters. | Human theologian |
| 1:22–23 | The Church as the Body of Christ | 1:22–23 | High | جسد المسيح is organic, Spirit-animated union with Christ — not an institutional or political collective; never الأمة. | Human theologian |
| 1:23 | Fullness of Christ in the Church | 1:23 | High | الملء risks being read through Sufi fanā’ (mystical dissolution into the divine); this is relational/representational fullness, not ontological merger. | Human theologian |
Coverage confirmation, Chapter 1: All verses reviewed. 1:2’s greeting formula (“grace and peace,” النعمة والسلام) reuses baseline High/Medium terms with no new complications. No section of Chapter 1 is without doctrinal load; all are tabulated above.
Chapter 2 (2:1–22) — Dead to Alive, and One New Humanity
| Section | Doctrine (registry key) | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1–3 | Universal Spiritual Deadness (Total Depravity) | 2:1–3 | High | ”Dead” (أموات) and “children of wrath by nature” (أبناء الغضب بالطبيعة) directly contradict Islamic fitrah doctrine of innate spiritual purity/neutrality at birth. | Human theologian |
| 2:2 | Spiritual Warfare | 2:2 (“prince of the power of the air”) | High | Must be taught as a real, personal, morally accountable being already subordinated to Christ (1:20-22), not folk jinn/shaytan cosmology inviting ritual countermeasures. | Human theologian |
| 2:4–7 | Grace / Assurance of Salvation and Heavenly Position | 2:4–7 | Critical / High | Present-tense “made us alive… seated us with him” must be rendered with full confidence — Islamic mīzān-based uncertainty about final salvation must not creep in as a hedge. | Human theologian |
| 2:8–9 | Salvation by Grace through Faith | 2:8–9 | Critical | Explicit negation of works (أعمال) as the basis of salvation is a direct, unambiguous confrontation with deeds-based mīzān soteriology, not a caution against excess reliance on works. | Human theologian |
| 2:8 | Faith | 2:8 | High | الإيمان here is the channel of receiving grace, personal trust in Christ, not creedal assent to six articles of belief. | Human theologian |
| 2:10 | Good Works as Fruit, Not Root, of Salvation | 2:10 | Critical | أعمال صالحة is identical vocabulary to Qur’an 2:177’s works-checklist righteousness; must be taught strictly downstream of grace — the fulcrum verse of the whole letter. | Human theologian |
| 2:10 | Walking in Newness of Life (first occurrence) | 2:10 | High | Governing metaphor (سلوك) of the whole letter begins here; must be rendered consistently across all seven occurrences (2:2, 2:10, 4:1, 4:17, 5:2, 5:8, 5:15). | Human theologian |
| 2:11–13 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | 2:11–13 | High | Requires careful pastoral framing given contemporary political weight of “Isrā’īl”; not a statement on the present conflict. | Human theologian |
| 2:11 | (glossary term) Circumcision/uncircumcision | 2:11 | High | Khitān is a near-universal cultural/religious practice across Arab Muslim contexts; must read as covenant-boundary status, not commentary on the practice itself. | Human theologian |
| 2:12 | (baseline) Covenant / Israel | 2:12 | Medium / High | العهد retains relational, unilaterally-initiated sense (baseline); إسرائيل carries contemporary political sensitivity (baseline note). | Native speaker / Human theologian |
| 2:13–16 | Reconciliation through the Cross | 2:13–16 | Critical | Presupposes historical crucifixion and substitutionary atonement (denied by Qur’an 4:157, 6:164); دم المسيح and الصليب require explicit apologetic scaffolding. | Human theologian |
| 2:14 | (glossary term) Dividing wall / hostility | 2:14 | High | Concrete historical image of a real, now-abolished barrier; must not be flattened into a vague metaphor for generic “differences.” | Human theologian |
| 2:15–16 | The Mystery of One New Humanity | 2:15–16 | High | الإنسان الواحد الجديد names a genuinely new corporate identity transcending, not erasing, ethnic origin; must not suggest abolition of the Mosaic law’s moral content — الناموس never الشريعة. | Human theologian |
| 2:18 | (baseline) Holy Spirit / Father | 2:18 | Critical | Trinitarian access “through him, in one Spirit, to the Father” reuses baseline Critical terms exactly. | Human theologian |
| 2:19–20 | The Church as the Body of Christ (temple imagery) | 2:19–22 | High | ”Fellow citizens,” “household of God,” “holy temple” reinforce the living, growing spiritual structure sense; distinguish from a physical mosque/masjid building sense. | Human theologian |
| 2:20 | (glossary term) Cornerstone | 2:20 | Low-Medium | Standard architectural metaphor; minimal collision. | Native speaker review |
| 2:21 | Holiness and Sainthood | 2:21 | High | ”Holy temple in the Lord” — corporate holiness, not an ascetic elite. | Human theologian |
| 2:22 | (glossary term) Temple / dwelling place | 2:22 | Medium | مسكن الله distinguished from ritual-purity building sense. | Native speaker review |
Coverage confirmation, Chapter 2: All verses reviewed; this chapter carries the curriculum’s core passage (2:1-10) and its highest doctrinal density in the book.
Chapter 3 (3:1–21) — The Mystery Made Known and Prayer for Strength
| Section | Doctrine (registry key) | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1–6 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 3:3–6, 3:9 | Critical | السر (Gentile co-heirship) must retain the fully-disclosed sense; recurs across the whole book and anchors its own curriculum doctrine. | Human theologian |
| 3:3–5 | Inspiration and Apostolic Revelation | 3:3–5 | High | إعلان preferred over وحي to avoid suggesting the Qur’an’s own claimed verbatim-dictation revelation mode. | Human theologian |
| 3:6 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | 3:6 | High | ”Fellow heirs, members of the same body, partakers of the promise” reinforces 2:11-22; same political-sensitivity caution applies. | Human theologian |
| 3:6, 3:8 | (baseline) Gentiles | 3:1, 3:6, 3:8 | Medium | الأمم retained; never الكفار. | Native speaker review |
| 3:8 | Holiness and Sainthood | 3:8 | High | ”Least of all the saints” — corporate designation, not hierarchical spiritual elite. | Human theologian |
| 3:9 | (glossary term) Stewardship | 3:2, 3:9 | Low | وكالة/تدبير; administrative metaphor, minor risk. | Native speaker review |
| 3:10 | Spiritual Warfare | 3:10 | High | ”Rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” — real, personal, morally accountable, Christ-subordinated beings, not an occult-adjacent framework. | Human theologian |
| 3:12 | Faith | 3:12 | High | ”Boldness and access… through faith in him” — personal trust, not creedal assent. | Human theologian |
| 3:13–19 | Prayer and Intercession | 3:14–19 | High | Paul’s bowed-knee prayer to the Father is a distinct, complementary intercessory practice; must not be conflated with plural-intercessor shafā’ah. | Human theologian |
| 3:16 | (baseline) Power of God | 3:16, 3:20 | Medium | قوة الله broadly compatible with Al-Qawiyy; standard care. | Native speaker review |
| 3:18 | Holiness and Sainthood | 3:18 | High | ”With all the saints” — corporate, not elite. | Human theologian |
| 3:19 | Fullness of Christ in the Church | 3:19 | High | ”Filled with all the fullness of God” — relational indwelling, not Sufi fanā’ ontological merger. | Human theologian |
| 3:14–15 | (baseline) Father | 3:14–15 | Critical | الآب; paired risk with Son of God per baseline — no safe substitute for the relationship category. | Human theologian |
| 3:20–21 | (baseline) Glory | 3:13, 3:16, 3:21 | High | المجد; avoid light-metaphor renderings evoking Sufi ishraq illumination mysticism. | Human theologian |
Coverage confirmation, Chapter 3: All verses reviewed; no section lacks doctrinal load.
Chapter 4 (4:1–32) — Unity, Gifts, and the New Self
| Section | Doctrine (registry key) | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:1 | Divine Calling | 4:1 | High | ”Walk worthy of the calling” — God-to-human summons direction preserved. | Human theologian |
| 4:1 | Walking in Newness of Life | 4:1 | High | Second occurrence of سلوك; must match rendering at 2:2, 2:10. | Human theologian |
| 4:2–3 | (baseline) Peace | 4:3 | Medium | السلام; relational/legal, not greeting-word or Sufi tuma’ninah sense. | Native speaker review |
| 4:3–6 | Unity of the Spirit (Sevenfold Confession) | 4:3–6 | Critical | Seven-part confession — جسد واحد، روح واحد، رجاء واحد، رب واحد، إيمان واحد، معمودية واحدة، إله وآب واحد — each element, especially رب واحد applied to Christ, must be rendered identically wherever quoted elsewhere in the curriculum. | Human theologian |
| 4:4 | Divine Calling / Hope | 4:4 | High / Medium | الدعوة / الرجاء; Islamic rajā’ pairs hope with uncertainty (khawf); Pauline hope is confident expectation grounded in an accomplished fact. | Human theologian / Native speaker |
| 4:5 | Deity and Lordship of Christ | 4:5 | Critical | ”One Lord” — الرب applied to Christ alone; never softened, never confused with human سيد (6:5-9). | Human theologian |
| 4:5 | Baptism | 4:5 | Medium | المعمودية; a one-time initiatory rite, distinct from repeatable ritual ablution (wuḍū’/ghusl). | Native speaker review |
| 4:7–11 | Gifts for Building Up the Church | 4:7–11 | Medium | المواهب الروحية retains الروحية qualifier; apostle/prophet reuse baseline High-risk cautions (prophet intersects with khatam an-nabiyyin finality doctrine); evangelist (مبشّر) intersects with real apostasy-context safety concerns. | Native speaker review (theologian for apostle/prophet occurrences) |
| 4:8–10 | Resurrection and Ascension of Christ | 4:8–10 | Critical | ”He ascended… led captivity captive” presupposes the historical crucifixion/resurrection Islam denies (Qur’an 4:157); apologetic scaffolding required. | Human theologian |
| 4:11 | (baseline) Apostle | 4:11 | High | الرسول; Muhammad’s own defining title — distinguish NT office (eyewitness, delegated founder-teacher) from Islamic prophetic finality claim. | Human theologian |
| 4:12–16 | The Church as the Body of Christ / Gifts for Building Up | 4:12, 4:16 | High / Medium | جسد المسيح organic union; equipping/building up (تجهيز/بنيان) low independent risk per baseline. | Human theologian / Automated |
| 4:13 | Fullness of Christ in the Church | 4:13 | High | ”Measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” — relational maturity goal, not mystical absorption. | Human theologian |
| 4:15 | Headship of Christ | 4:15 | High | ”Speaking the truth in love… into him who is the head” — consistency with 1:22, 5:23. | Human theologian |
| 4:17–19 | Walking in Newness of Life (negative pole) | 4:17 | High | ”No longer walk as the Gentiles walk” — third occurrence; the before-state of the book’s governing metaphor. | Human theologian |
| 4:22–24 | The Old Man and the New Man | 4:22–24 | High | Must not be reduced to Islamic tawbah (behavioral reform of a continuously pure self); this is a definitive identity change through union with Christ, paralleling 2:10. | Human theologian |
| 4:24 | (glossary term) Created (new creation) | 4:24 | Medium | مخلوقون; must read as re-creation in Christ, not humanity’s original creation generally. | Native speaker review |
| 4:25–29 | (baseline) Mutual Edification | 4:25–29 | Low | Truth-telling, no stealing, edifying speech — no significant doctrinal risk per baseline. | Automated review |
| 4:30 | Sanctification and Filling with the Spirit | 4:30 | High | ”Do not grieve the Holy Spirit” presupposes the Spirit’s full, grievable personhood — distinct from the angelic (Jibrīl) reading of the identical Qur’anic phrase. | Human theologian |
| 4:32 | (baseline) Grace | 4:32 | High | Forgiveness “as God in Christ forgave you” — grace as ground and model, unearned. | Human theologian |
Coverage confirmation, Chapter 4: All verses reviewed; every section carries tabulated doctrinal content.
Chapter 5 (5:1–33) — Imitating God, Walking in Light, and Marriage
| Section | Doctrine (registry key) | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5:1–2 | Imitation of God | 5:1–2 | Critical | Direct collision with Islamic tanzīh (God’s transcendence making him unimitable; Muhammad, not Allah, is the imitable model, Qur’an 33:21); imitation of God himself, grounded in filial “beloved children” adoption identity, must not be softened. | Human theologian |
| 5:2 | Reconciliation through the Cross (offering/sacrifice) | 5:2 | High | تقدمة وذبيحة; atonement vocabulary the Qur’an (6:164) denies is possible — same scaffolding as دم المسيح/الصليب. | Human theologian |
| 5:2, 5:8, 5:15 | Walking in Newness of Life | 5:2, 5:8, 5:15 | High | Fourth-sixth occurrences of سلوك; consistency with 2:2, 2:10, 4:1, 4:17 required. | Human theologian |
| 5:3 | Holiness and Sainthood | 5:3 | High | ”Not even be named among you, as is proper among saints” — corporate holiness standard. | Human theologian |
| 5:5 | (baseline) Kingdom of God | 5:5 | Medium | ملكوت الله; God’s present spiritual reign, not a political/theocratic state — avoid khilāfah resonance. | Native speaker review |
| 5:9–14 | Walking as Children of Light | 5:8–14 | High | Reinforces the walking metaphor’s before/after structure; light imagery must avoid Sufi ishraq illumination-mysticism resonance (per baseline “glory” note). | Human theologian |
| 5:18 | Sanctification and Filling with the Spirit | 5:18 | High | ”Be filled with the Spirit” must be taught as moral-relational Spirit-control, not altered-consciousness/trance experience, given both Sufi dhikr practice and folk jinn-possession beliefs. | Human theologian |
| 5:19–20 | (baseline) Thanksgiving | 5:20 | Low | الشكر; broadly compatible with the Islamic virtue of shukr. | Automated review |
| 5:21 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 5:21 | High | يخضع بعضكم لبعض (“submit to one another”) must be established as the governing frame for what follows, so 5:22 is not read as unilateral, detached female subordination. | Human theologian |
| 5:22–24 | Christ-Centered Marriage | 5:22–24 | High | Wives’ submission and husbandly headship (الرأس) must be interpreted strictly through the self-sacrificial pattern of 5:25, never as license for unqualified authority; superficial resonance with Qur’an 4:34’s qiwāmah male-guardianship framework must be actively distinguished. | Human theologian |
| 5:23 | Headship of Christ (marriage application) | 5:23 | High | Reuses 1:22/4:15 term; consistency across all three occurrences required to prevent household usage being read apart from its Christological model. | Human theologian |
| 5:25–30 | Christ-Centered Marriage | 5:25–30 | High | ”Christ loved the church and gave himself for her” — the self-giving pattern that must govern all headship language in the letter. | Human theologian |
| 5:26 | (baseline) Sanctification | 5:26 | High | التقديس; not ritual purification (wuḍū’/ghusl) — per baseline note. | Human theologian |
| 5:27 | Holiness and Sainthood | 5:27 | High | ”Holy and without blemish” — corporate bridal holiness, not ascetic elite status. | Human theologian |
| 5:32 | Christ-Centered Marriage / The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 5:32 | Critical | ”This mystery is great” reuses السر; marriage as a disclosed illustration of Christ and the church, not an unknowable ghayb. | Human theologian |
Coverage confirmation, Chapter 5: All verses reviewed; no section lacks doctrinal load. This chapter carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier household/marriage material in the book.
Chapter 6 (6:1–24) — Household Codes, Warfare, and Closing
| Section | Doctrine (registry key) | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6:1–4 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 6:1–4 | High | Children/parents instructions read alongside 5:21’s mutual-submission frame; fathers explicitly restrained from provoking children to anger — a corrective to purely authoritarian household models. | Human theologian |
| 6:5–9 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 6:5–9 | High | Bondservant/master material must be taught in its historical, redemptive-transformative NT context, not as endorsement of any contemporary labor arrangement; Arabic’s سيد/الرب distinction usefully preserves the difference between human masters and Christ’s exclusive Lordship. | Human theologian |
| 6:9 | Deity and Lordship of Christ | 6:9 | Critical | ”Their Master and yours is in heaven” — الرب retained for Christ’s exclusive authority over both parties, distinct from human سيد. | Human theologian |
| 6:10–13 | Spiritual Warfare | 6:10–13 | High | ”Not against flesh and blood… but against rulers, against authorities” — real, personal, morally accountable, Christ-subordinated beings; not an occult-adjacent framework calling for ritual countermeasures such as ruqya-style exorcism. | Human theologian |
| 6:11, 6:13–17 | The Armor of God | 6:11, 6:13–17 | Medium | سلاح الله الكامل; given contested jihad/military connotations in Arabic religious discourse, the exclusively defensive, non-violent, spiritual sense must be explicitly reinforced; each named piece (البر، الإيمان، الخلاص، الإنجيل، السلام) retains its own baseline doctrinal weight. | Native speaker review |
| 6:17 | (glossary term) Word of God | 6:17 | Critical | كلمة الله is the Qur’an’s own title for Jesus himself (4:171); must be clarified in context as Scripture/God’s spoken message here, distinct from Logos-Christology, so readers are not left to reconcile the overlap unaided. | Human theologian |
| 6:18–20 | Prayer and Intercession | 6:18–20 | High | ”Praying at all times in the Spirit… supplication for all the saints” — mutual intercessory prayer, distinct and complementary to Christ’s own exclusive intercession; not a plural-intercessor shafā’ah framework. | Human theologian |
| 6:19 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 6:19 | Critical | Paul’s request for boldness “to make known the mystery of the gospel” — final book-end occurrence of السر; must retain the disclosed, publicly-proclaimed sense established from 1:9 onward. | Human theologian |
| 6:21–24 | (baseline) Grace / general closing | 6:23–24 | High | ”Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ” — closing benediction; النعمة and الرب retained per baseline. | Human theologian |
Coverage confirmation, Chapter 6: All verses reviewed. 6:21-22 (Tychicus’s commendation) carries no independent new doctrine and is explicitly noted here as reviewed with no new terms beyond standard exhortation vocabulary (يشجع، per baseline “exhort”).

Critical Risk Doctrines
Adoption into God’s Family
Arabic name: التبني في عائلة الله
Key terms: adoption, sons, predestined us to adoption
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Qur’an 33:4-5 explicitly denies adopted sons true filial and inheritance status. Ephesians 1:5 grounds believers’ full son-status and inheritance directly in God’s predestining choice, running against the Islamic legal default at its sharpest point.
Deity and Lordship of Christ
Arabic name: لاهوت المسيح وربوبيته
Key terms: Lord Jesus Christ, head over all things to the church, one Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: الرب is a defining title of Allah in the Quran’s opening surah; applying it to Jesus throughout Ephesians (as in the baseline Romans 10:9 note) is precisely the claim of full deity that must be preserved, never softened to ‘master’ or ‘teacher,’ and never confused with the human سيد applied to household masters in 6:5-9.
Election and Predestination in Christ
Arabic name: الاختيار والتعيين السابق في المسيح
Key terms: chose us, predestined, before the foundation of the world, purpose of his will
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Ephesians 1:4-5’s claim that God determined believers’ adoption ‘before the foundation of the world’ closely parallels Islamic al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẕ (the Preserved Tablet) and qadar, one of Islam’s six articles of faith. Must be taught as God’s specific, gracious, Christ-centered redemptive purpose for those united to Christ, not exhaustive impersonal determinism over all events indiscriminately.
Good Works as Fruit, Not Root, of Salvation
Arabic name: الأعمال الصالحة كنتيجة لا كأساس للخلاص
Key terms: workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, good works prepared beforehand
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Qur’an 2:177 defines al-birr precisely as a checklist of good deeds achieving standing before God. Ephesians 2:10 uses the identical vocabulary (أعمال صالحة) but places it strictly downstream of grace-given salvation (2:8-9) — the fulcrum verse guarding the whole letter against a deeds-based misreading.
Imitation of God
Arabic name: الاقتداء بالله
Key terms: be imitators of God, as beloved children, walk in love as Christ loved
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: directly collides with Islamic tanzīh (God’s absolute transcendence, making him unimitable — Muhammad, not Allah, is the imitable model, uswa ḥasanah, Qur’an 33:21). Ephesians 5:1 commands imitation of God himself, grounded in the filial ‘beloved children’ identity secured by adoption; must not be softened to imitating Christ’s human example alone, though 5:2 immediately supplies that as the specific application.
The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Arabic name: سر المسيح المعلَن
Key terms: mystery, made known, mystery of the gospel, great mystery
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: السر must not be conflated with Qur’anic al-ghayb (the unseen, known only to Allah, Qur’an 27:65). Paul’s mystery is the theological opposite — a truth once hidden that God has now fully and permanently disclosed in the gospel to all, not an esoteric secret reserved to God alone or to a spiritual elite. This term recurs across the whole book and anchors its own curriculum doctrine.
Reconciliation through the Cross
Arabic name: المصالحة بالصليب
Key terms: blood of Christ, the cross, reconcile, put to death the hostility
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: presupposes the historical crucifixion and a substitutionary atoning death, both denied by mainstream Islamic doctrine (Qur’an 4:157 denies the crucifixion; 6:164 denies one person’s death can bear another’s guilt). Requires explicit apologetic scaffolding before دم المسيح and الصليب can carry their intended meaning.
Resurrection and Ascension of Christ
Arabic name: قيامة المسيح وصعوده
Key terms: raised him from the dead, seated him at his right hand, far above all rule and authority
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: mainstream Islamic doctrine (Qur’an 4:157) denies Jesus was crucified at all. Without first establishing the historical crucifixion, Ephesians’ repeated claims of Christ’s resurrection, ascension, and enthronement have no event to refer to; this doctrine requires apologetic scaffolding, not just correct vocabulary, at every occurrence.
Salvation by Grace through Faith
Arabic name: الخلاص بالنعمة عن طريق الإيمان
Key terms: grace, faith, saved, gift, not of works
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: mainstream Islamic soteriology weighs deeds (a’māl) on the mīzān at Judgment with no assured outcome. Ephesians 2:8-9 states salvation is by grace (النعمة), through faith (الإيمان), as a gift (عطية) not of works (أعمال) — a direct, unambiguous negation of deeds-based salvation, not merely a caution against excessive self-reliance.
Unity of the Spirit (Sevenfold Confession)
Arabic name: وحدة الروح (الاعتراف السباعي)
Key terms: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father
Review routing: Human theologian
Each component term individually reuses established baseline/Ephesians renderings (جسد واحد، روح واحد، رجاء واحد، رب واحد، إيمان واحد، معمودية واحدة، إله وآب واحد), but the cumulative sevenfold structure is a high-value catechetical unit; each element (especially رب واحد applied to Christ, and إله وآب واحد naming both Father and Son together) must remain intact and identically rendered wherever the passage is quoted elsewhere in the curriculum.
High Risk Doctrines
Assurance of Salvation and Heavenly Position in Christ
Arabic name: التأكد من الخلاص والمكانة السماوية في المسيح
Key terms: made us alive together with Christ, seated us with him in the heavenly places, you have been saved
Review routing: Human theologian
Mainstream Sunni piety treats certainty of one’s own final salvation as presumptuous (only Allah knows the outcome on the mīzān). Ephesians 2:5-8’s present-tense claim that believers are already saved and already seated with Christ in the heavenly places must be rendered with full confidence, not hedged into a probabilistic or Judgment-Day-pending framing.
Christ-Centered Marriage
Arabic name: الزواج المتمركز حول المسيح
Key terms: husband is head of the wife, Christ loved the church and gave himself, great mystery
Review routing: Human theologian
Husbandly headship (الرأس) must be interpreted strictly through the self-sacrificial pattern of 5:25 (‘Christ loved the church and gave himself for her’), never as license for unqualified authority; marriage’s designation as ‘a great mystery’ (5:32) reuses السر and must retain the disclosed-truth sense established in the mystery doctrine above, not an unknowable ghayb.
The Church as the Body of Christ
Arabic name: الكنيسة بصفتها جسد المسيح
Key terms: body of Christ, one body, members of one another
Review routing: Human theologian
جسد المسيح must convey organic, Spirit-animated union with Christ, distinct from the baseline caution against borrowing الأمة (ummah, the pan-Islamic community) for ‘church’; this is a living organism, not an institutional or political collective.
Divine Calling
Arabic name: الدعوة الإلهية
Key terms: calling, called, hope of his calling
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s sovereign summons runs the opposite direction from da’wah, the Islamic term for human invitation of others to Islam; the direction of address (God summoning humanity, not humanity inviting others) must remain explicit.
Faith
Arabic name: الإيمان
Key terms: faith, through faith, measure of faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Islamic iman is primarily creedal assent to six articles of belief; Pauline faith in Ephesians is personal trust in Christ specifically, the channel through which grace is received, not a meritorious act.
Fullness of Christ in the Church
Arabic name: ملء المسيح في الكنيسة
Key terms: fullness of him who fills all in all, fullness of Christ, fullness of God
Review routing: Human theologian
الملء must not be read through Sufi fanā’ (mystical dissolution/annihilation of the self into the divine); the church’s fullness is relational and representational — Christ’s presence and rule manifested through his body — not ontological merger or loss of distinct identity.
Grace
Arabic name: النعمة
Key terms: grace, riches of grace, grace given
Review routing: Human theologian
Islamic fadl and rahmah both function as favor responsive to obedience. النعمة in Ephesians must always be reinforced as unearned favor preceding and initiating rescue of those still dead in sin, not a reward for prior merit.
Headship of Christ
Arabic name: رئاسة المسيح
Key terms: head over all things, head of the church, head of the body
Review routing: Human theologian
الرأس must convey loving, life-giving, self-sacrificial authority (per the pattern of 5:25, Christ giving himself for the church), never domination; the same term is later applied to the husband (5:23), so consistent theological framing across all three occurrences is required to prevent the household usage from being read apart from its Christological model.
Holiness and Sainthood
Arabic name: القداسة والقديسون
Key terms: saints, holy and blameless, holy temple in the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
القديسون must not be rendered with vocabulary evoking أولياء (Sufi ‘friends of God,’ a venerated, shrine-intercession class); this is a corporate designation of all believers, not an ascetic or spiritually elite subgroup, per baseline sainthood doctrine.
Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Arabic name: نظام البيت المسيحي والعلاقات المتمركزة حول المسيح
Key terms: submit to one another, wives submit, husbands love, children obey, bondservants obey
Review routing: Human theologian
The mutual-submission frame of 5:21 (يخضع بعضكم لبعض) must govern the wives’ submission instruction of 5:22, so it is not read as unilateral, detached female subordination; the bondservant/master instructions (6:5-9) must be taught in their historical, redemptive-transformative NT context, not as endorsement of any contemporary social arrangement.
Inheritance of the Saints
Arabic name: ميراث القديسين
Key terms: obtained an inheritance, riches of his inheritance in the saints, guarantee of our inheritance
Review routing: Human theologian
الميراث in Islamic law is heavily codified with fixed, gender-differentiated shares (Qur’an 4:11-12); the NT inheritance secured by adoption is an unearned, equal, full inheritance for all ‘sons’ in Christ, not a formula-calculated legal portion, and this contrast must be made explicit.
Inspiration and Apostolic Revelation
Arabic name: الوحي والإعلان الرسولي
Key terms: revealed to his holy apostles and prophets, revelation, made known by the Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
Prefer إعلان (unveiling/disclosure) over وحي (waḥy) for ‘revelation,’ since waḥy carries strong association with the Qur’an’s own claimed mode of verbatim, dictated revelation; biblical inspiration is God moving human authors to write in their own voice.
The Old Man and the New Man
Arabic name: الإنسان العتيق والإنسان الجديد
Key terms: put off the old man, put on the new man, renewed in the spirit of the mind
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be reduced to Islamic tawbah (behavioral reform of the same continuous self, born pure per fitrah); this names a definitive change of identity and nature through union with Christ, paralleling the new-creation language of 2:10, not merely turning over a new leaf.
The Mystery of One New Humanity
Arabic name: سر الإنسانية الواحدة الجديدة
Key terms: one new man, abolishing the law of commandments, one body
Review routing: Human theologian
الإنسان الواحد الجديد names a genuinely new corporate identity created in Christ, transcending but not erasing ethnic origin; must be distinguished from any suggestion that this abolishes the Mosaic law’s moral content, since الناموس (never الشريعة, per baseline) refers specifically to its ceremonial ordinances functioning as covenant boundary markers.
Prayer and Intercession
Arabic name: الصلاة والشفاعة
Key terms: I do not cease to pray, bow my knees to the Father, praying at all times in the Spirit, supplication for all the saints
Review routing: Human theologian
الشفاعة is a live, contested category in Islamic theology (Muhammad’s ‘greater intercession’ at Judgment). Ephesians 6:18’s call to intercede for one another is a distinct, complementary practice to Christ’s own exclusive, once-for-all intercession established in the baseline; the two must not be conflated with a plural-intercessor Islamic framework.
Sanctification and Filling with the Spirit
Arabic name: التقديس والامتلاء بالروح
Key terms: sanctify and cleanse, be filled with the Spirit, do not grieve the Holy Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
التقديس must remain the Spirit’s ongoing moral-relational work, not ritual purification (wuḍū’/ghusl); ‘be filled with the Spirit’ (5:18) must be taught as Spirit-given moral control of a surrendered will, not an altered-consciousness or trance experience, given both Sufi dhikr practice and folk jinn-possession beliefs in the broader cultural context; 4:30’s warning presupposes the Spirit’s full, grievable personhood, distinct from the angelic (Jibril) reading of the same Qur’anic phrase.
Spiritual Warfare
Arabic name: الحرب الروحية
Key terms: rulers, authorities, spiritual forces of evil, the devil, not against flesh and blood
Review routing: Human theologian
Overlaps with popular Islamic jinn/shaytan cosmology, which is diffuse and largely amoral in folk usage. The rulers and authorities named here must be taught as real, personal, morally accountable spiritual beings already placed under Christ’s supreme authority (1:20-22), not an occult-adjacent framework calling for ritual countermeasures such as ruqya-style exorcism.
Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Arabic name: وحدة اليهود والأمم في إنسانية واحدة جديدة
Key terms: one new man, no longer strangers, fellow citizens, dividing wall
Review routing: Human theologian
Requires careful pastoral framing given the contemporary political weight of ‘Isra’il’ in Arabic-speaking contexts (per baseline israel note); Ephesians 2’s redemptive-historical unity claim must not be flattened into or read as a statement on the present Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Universal Spiritual Deadness (Total Depravity)
Arabic name: الموت الروحي الشامل
Key terms: dead in trespasses, sons of disobedience, children of wrath by nature
Review routing: Human theologian
Islamic fitrah doctrine holds every soul is born spiritually pure and neutral, bearing no inherited guilt from Adam. Ephesians 2:1-3’s claim that all were ‘dead’ (أموات) and ‘children of wrath by nature’ (أبناء الغضب بالطبيعة) runs directly against this default and must be taught deliberately, not assumed as shared ground.
Walking in Newness of Life
Arabic name: السلوك في جدة الحياة
Key terms: walk, no longer walk as the Gentiles walk, walk in love, walk as children of light
Review routing: Human theologian
السلوك is the governing metaphor of the whole letter and must be rendered consistently across all seven occurrences to preserve the before/after structure that frames the entire book, from the former ‘walk’ in death and disobedience (2:2) to the new ‘walk’ in good works (2:10) and light (5:8).
Medium Risk Doctrines
The Armor of God
Arabic name: سلاح الله الكامل
Key terms: whole armor of God, belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
Given contested contemporary connotations of jihad/military vocabulary in Arabic religious discourse, the passage’s exclusively defensive, non-violent, spiritual (not literal-combat) sense must be reinforced explicitly; each named piece (البر، الإيمان، الخلاص، الإنجيل) must also retain its own established baseline doctrinal weight within the metaphor.
Baptism
Arabic name: المعمودية
Key terms: one baptism
Review routing: Native speaker review
المعمودية is an established Christian Arabic term distinct from Islamic ritual ablution (wuḍū’/ghusl); Ephesians 4:5 names it as a single, one-time initiatory rite, not a repeatable purification practice.
Gifts for Building Up the Church
Arabic name: المواهب لبنيان الكنيسة
Key terms: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, equipping the saints, each part working properly
Review routing: Native speaker review
المواهب الروحية must retain the الروحية qualifier so gifting is not read as natural talent; apostle/prophet reuse baseline High-risk cautions, while evangelist/pastor/teacher carry lower independent collision risk beyond the baseline evangelism doctrine’s real-world safety caution.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Arabic name: الشكر
Key terms: giving thanks, thanksgiving
Review routing: Automated review
Shukr is also a major Islamic virtue; broadly compatible concept, low independent risk.
