Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Peter (Koine Greek → Arabic)

Method and Scope

This analysis covers the entire book of 2 Peter, three chapters, first to last, per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate. The core passage (2 Peter 1:16-21) receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other portion of the book is treated chapter-by-chapter, covering every load-bearing theological term with: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Arabic) rendering risk.

Baseline compliance rule: Any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json (gospel, grace, faith, righteousness, justification, salvation, apostle, called, calling, holy, saints, sanctification, adoption, resurrection, lord, son_of_god, incarnation, peace, spiritual_gifts, thanksgiving, fellowship, church, kingdom_of_god, law, sin, gentiles, glory, obedience_of_faith, power_of_god, messiah, prophet, prophecy, covenant, election, intercession, providence, mission, david, israel, jesus, god, holy_spirit, father, abba, exhort, seed_of_david, imputed_righteousness) is reused exactly as recorded there. This document does not re-derive those renderings; it cites them and flags where 2 Peter’s usage intersects with or extends the existing risk note.

2 Peter shares several doctrine risk patterns already documented for Romans (deity/lordship of Christ, sonship, resurrection scaffolding, inspiration of Scripture, grace vs. merit, salvation as accomplished-not-pending). Where 2 Peter raises a new collision not covered in the Romans baseline (e.g., divine nature, parousia/second coming, repentance, diligence’s root-sharing with jihad), a new entry is created here and carried into 08_core_glossary.md.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: 2 Peter 1:16-21 (Verse-by-Verse)

2 Peter 1:16

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
μῦθος (sesophismenois mythois)mythos”myth, cleverly devised tale”fictional/legendary story; contrasted with historical eyewitness report”myths,” “fables,” “cleverly devised stories”Peter explicitly denies the apostolic testimony is invented legend — grounding the gospel account (and by extension Christ’s future return) in verified eyewitness history, not embellishment. Medium-High risk: must actively assert historical eyewitness reliability, since skeptical framings (and some polemical claims that Gospel accounts are later embellishments) treat NT narrative as legend; this verse is itself the corrective.
δύναμις (dynamis)dynamis”power, might, capability”inherent power; miraculous power; here Christ’s messianic power displayed/anticipated”power,” “might”Reuse baseline power_of_god (قوة الله) pattern; here specifically Christ’s own power, previewed at the Transfiguration and consummated at his return. Medium risk, standard.
παρουσία (parousia)parousia”presence, arrival, coming”a ruler’s official arrival/visit; in NT eschatology, Christ’s second coming”coming,” “presence,” “advent,” “return”Paired with δύναμις, refers to the power and (future) coming of Christ, previewed in the Transfiguration as a guarantee of the reality still to come (cf. 3:4).المجيء (الثاني) (al-maji’ [al-thānī]) — CRITICAL. See doctrine note under “Certainty of Christ’s Return” below; Islamic hadith affirms a nuzūl ‘Isā (descent of Jesus) with an incompatible narrative (returns as a follower of Islam, breaks crosses, dies naturally, is buried in Medina — not as divine judge-king). Every occurrence of parousia language in 2 Peter must be scaffolded against this competing narrative, not left to stand as a “shared” concept.
ἐπόπτης (epoptai genēthentes)epoptēs”eyewitness, one who has personally observed”technical term for a personal, firsthand observer (used of witnesses to sacred mysteries in Greek religious usage)“eyewitnesses,” “witnesses”Grounds apostolic authority in direct, personal, historical observation of Christ’s glory — not secondhand report or private vision.شهود عيان (shuhūd ‘iyān). Medium risk; strengthens the reliability-of-testimony doctrine; pairs with μεγαλειότης below.
μεγαλειότης (megaleiotēs)megaleiotēs”majesty, greatness, magnificence”splendor/majesty befitting deity or supreme royalty”majesty,” “grandeur,” “glory”Ascribes to the transfigured Christ the majesty otherwise reserved for God alone — a deity claim embedded in narrative rather than propositional assertion.العظمة / الجلال (al-‘aẕamah / al-jalāl). Critical risk: الجلال directly echoes Dhū l-Jalāl wa-l-Ikrām (“Possessor of Majesty and Honor”), a core Quranic divine attribute. Ascribing jalāl to Jesus reinforces the deity_of_christ doctrine and will register as maximally confrontational; do not soften to “greatness” alone.

2 Peter 1:17

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
τιμή (timē)timē”honor, value, price”esteem, honor bestowed”honor”God the Father publicly honors the Son at the Transfiguration.كرامة / كرم (karāmah). Low-Medium risk, standard vocabulary.
δόξα (doxa)doxa”glory, radiance, honor”divine radiant presence and honor”glory”Reuse baseline glory (المجد) — here the Father bestows glory on the Son, another deity-adjacent claim.المجد (al-majd) — reuse baseline exactly. High risk (per baseline glory entry) applies with added weight here since it is glory given by the Father to the Son.
Θεός Πατήρ (Theos Patēr)Theos Patēr”God Father”God in his fatherly relation”God the Father”Reuse baseline god (الله) + father (الآب).الله الآب — reuse baseline exactly. Critical, per baseline father/son_of_god paired-risk note.
μεγαλοπρεπὴς δόξα (megaloprepēs doxa)megaloprepēs doxa”magnificent/majestic glory”a reverential periphrasis (circumlocution) avoiding direct naming of God, similar to Jewish avoidance of the divine name”the Majestic Glory,” “the Excellent Glory”A title standing in for God the Father himself; the voice from heaven is God’s own voice. Medium risk: readers unfamiliar with biblical circumlocution devices may miss that this is God speaking; must be glossed explicitly rather than read as a separate being or angelic messenger.
ἀγαπητός (Huios … agapētos)Huios agapētos”Son … beloved”eternal, unique divine sonship + the Father’s covenantal delight”Son,” “beloved Son,” “my beloved Son”The Father’s own voice identifies Jesus as “my Son, my beloved” — the same declaration made at Jesus’ baptism, directly asserting the eternal Father-Son relation Romans 1:3-4 argues for. (Ibn Allāh / ibniya al-ḥabīb) — reuse baseline son_of_god exactly; do not substitute a softened relational title. CRITICAL (identical risk profile to Romans 1:4 baseline entry: Quran 112:3, 19:35).
εὐδοκέω (eudokēsa)eudokēsa”I was well pleased, I took delight in”settled, deliberate divine pleasure/approval”well pleased,” “delighted in”The Father’s approval rests permanently and fully on the Son — not conditional or provisional. (God’s good pleasure) has a positive resonance with Islamic riḍwān Allāh (God’s good pleasure on believers) — a workable bridge term, but note the object here is uniquely the Son, not achieved through obedience as in the Islamic framework.

2 Peter 1:18

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
φωνή ἐξ οὐρανοῦ (phōnē ex ouranou)phōnē ex ouranou”a voice out of heaven”direct divine speech-act, audible and historically located”voice from heaven”Confirms the eyewitness claim of v.16-17: not a private vision but a shared, audible, historical event heard by multiple witnesses. Low-Medium risk, standard.
ὄρος ἅγιον (oros hagion)oros hagion”holy mountain”the site consecrated by God’s manifested presence (the Mount of Transfiguration)“holy mountain”Reuse baseline holy (مقدس). Marks the site as set apart by God’s presence, not by ritual consecration. Medium risk, note the ق-د-س root shared with al-Quds (Jerusalem) is safe, shared vocabulary as per baseline.

2 Peter 1:19

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον (bebaioteron ton prophētikon logon)bebaioteron prophētikon logon”the more confirmed/sure prophetic word”the OT prophetic witness, now corroborated (not competed with) by eyewitness testimony”the prophetic word made more sure,” “the word of the prophets confirmed”Eyewitness experience and OT prophecy jointly, not competingly, ground confidence in Christ. Ties directly to baseline fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine. High risk: must be framed as confirmation/fulfillment, not abrogation (نسخ, naskh) of earlier revelation — the same naskh-collision already flagged in the baseline fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine note.
αὐχμηρῷ τόπῳ (lychnos … auchmērō topō)lychnos, auchmēros topos”lamp … in a dark/squalid place”metaphor for guiding light amid moral/spiritual darkness”lamp shining in a dark place”Scripture’s prophetic word functions as reliable guidance until Christ’s return brings full light. Low risk, standard metaphor.
ἡμέρα διαυγάσῃ / φωσφόρος ἀνατείλῃ (hēmera diaugasē / phōsphoros anateilē)hēmera diaugasē, phōsphoros”day dawns / morning star (light-bearer) rises”imagery of the dawning of full eschatological light at Christ’s return”day dawns and the morning star rises”Anticipates the Parousia as the full dawning of what prophecy and eyewitness testimony now partially illumine. Low-Medium risk; note the “morning star” also functions as a messianic self-title in Revelation 22:16 — worth a cross-reference footnote, not a translation change.

2 Peter 1:20

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
προφητεία γραφῆς (prophēteia graphēs)prophēteia graphēs”prophecy of Scripture”inspired predictive/declarative Scripture”prophecy of Scripture,” “scriptural prophecy”Reuse baseline prophecy (نبوءة) and the concept underlying gospel’s note on scriptural authority. Medium-High risk, ties to inspiration_of_scripture doctrine.
ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως (idias epilyseōs)idias epilyseōs”of one’s own release/interpretation/solving”the origin of a prophecy — whether it arose from the prophet’s own initiative/opinion, not primarily about restricting later readers’ interpretation”private interpretation” (traditional English gloss, often misread), “his own interpretation,” “the prophet’s own explanation”Peter is asserting that prophecy did NOT originate from a human prophet’s own initiative or opinion (contrast with v.21) — an origin-of-revelation claim, not primarily a restriction on reader interpretation.لم تنشأ عن تفسير أو رأي خاص من النبي (lam tansha’ ‘an tafsīr aw ra’y khāṣṣ min al-nabī). CRITICAL / High risk: avoid التأويل (ta’wīl) for “interpretation” here — ta’wīl is a loaded technical term in Islamic hermeneutics (esoteric/allegorical reading, and per Quran 3:7, a meaning “known only to Allah”); using it would import a specific Islamic doctrine of reserved, hidden meaning foreign to Peter’s actual point about the origin of prophecy. Prefer تفسير or, better, a paraphrase emphasizing origin (“لم تصدر عن رأي النبي الخاص”) over a single noun.

2 Peter 1:21

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
θελήματι ἀνθρώπου (thelēmati anthrōpou)thelēmati anthrōpou”by the will of man”human initiative/volition as the source”will of man,” “human will”Negated: prophecy’s origin is explicitly NOT human will. Medium risk, standard.
φερόμενοι ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου (pheromenoi hypo Pneumatos Hagiou)pheromenoi hypo Pneumatos Hagiou”being carried/borne along by the Holy Spirit”active, personal, moving guidance — the Spirit “bears” the human author the way wind bears a ship, without erasing the author’s own voice/personality”moved by the Holy Spirit,” “carried along by the Holy Spirit”This is the NT’s own model of inspiration: divine origination + retained human authorship/voice — distinct from a dictation model. Reuse baseline holy_spirit (الروح القدس). CRITICAL: extends the existing baseline note on inspiration_of_scripture — Islamic waḥy (revelation) is typically understood as verbatim divine dictation (often via the angel Gabriel/Jibrīl, identified in mainstream tafsīr with “the Holy Spirit” itself — see baseline holy_spirit entry) with the human prophet as a largely passive reciting conduit. 2 Peter’s “carried along” model — Spirit-originated yet retaining the human author’s own voice, vocabulary, and personality — must be actively distinguished from both the dictation model and from a merely-human-opinion model.
ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι (elalēsan apo Theou anthrōpoi)elalēsan apo Theou anthrōpoi”men spoke from God”human agents, truly speaking, yet the message’s ultimate source is God”men spoke from God,” “holy men of God spoke”Reuse baseline prophet (نبي) concept — these are God’s spokesmen, per baseline note on avoiding the “prophet as final/superseded by later prophet” collision. High risk, ties to inspiration_of_scripture doctrine and the tahrīf (textual-corruption) claim: this verse asserts the text’s divine origin and reliability at the point of writing — relevant ammunition against later corruption claims but must not be read as conceding that scripture today is a corrupted copy of that original speech-act (same caution as baseline gospel entry).

PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK

Chapter 1 (vv. 1-15; vv. 16-21 treated in Part 1 above)

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
δοῦλος (v.1, doulos)doulos”slave, bondservant”one owned by / totally devoted to a master”servant,” “slave,” “bondservant”Peter’s self-designation of total submission and ownership by Christ, a mark of honor not degradation in NT usage. Medium risk (positive bridge): shares the root ع-ب-د with Islam’s foundational self-identity term (‘ibādah, worship; humanity as ‘ibād Allāh) — a genuinely compatible resonance, but note the object here is Christ specifically, a claim of exclusive devotion to Jesus that the Islamic framework would redirect to Allah alone.
ἰσότιμον πίστιν (v.1)isotimon pistin”faith of equal value/standing”faith shared equally by all believers regardless of status”same precious faith,” “equally precious faith”Reuse baseline faith (الإيمان). Emphasizes the universal, non-hierarchical access to saving faith — relevant to baseline universal_scope_of_gospel.الإيمان (al-īmān) — reuse baseline exactly. High risk, per baseline note.
δικαιοσύνη τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (v.1)dikaiosynē tou Theou hēmōn kai sōtēros Iēsou Christou”righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ”the single grammatical construction (one article governing “God and Savior”) identifies Jesus AS God and Savior in one breath”the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ”A direct, grammatically explicit deity claim (parallel to Titus 2:13) — one Person is named both θεός and σωτήρ.بر إلهنا ومخلّصنا يسوع المسيح (birr ilāhinā wa-mukhalliṣinā Yasū’ al-Masīḥ) — reuse baseline righteousness (البر) + new term savior (المخلّص, see below). CRITICAL: this is among the strongest single-verse deity-of-Christ texts in the NT canon; must never be softened by inserting a comma/break that separates “God” from “Savior” as two figures.
σωτήρ (sōtēr) — new term, occurs 1:1, 1:11, 2:20, 3:2, 3:18sōtēr”savior, deliverer”one who rescues/delivers from mortal danger; a royal/divine title in the Hellenistic world”Savior”Reuse baseline salvation root (الخلاص). Consistently paired with “Lord” and, in 1:1, with “God,” reinforcing Christ’s deity throughout the letter.المخلّص (al-mukhalliṣ), from the same خ-ل-ص root as baseline الخلاص. CRITICAL — new registry entry required: Islamic soteriology has no mediating “Savior” figure comparable to Christ (deeds are weighed directly by Allah; intercession, where affirmed, is not substitutionary rescue). Every occurrence should reinforce, not soften, the exclusivity and sufficiency of this title.
χάρις καὶ εἰρήνη (v.2)charis kai eirēnē”grace and peace”apostolic greeting-blessing”grace and peace”Reuse baseline grace (النعمة) and peace (السلام).النعمة والسلام — reuse baseline exactly. High/Medium risk per baseline entries.
ἐπίγνωσις (vv.2,3,8; also 2:20, 3:18)epignōsis”full/precise/personal knowledge”knowledge that is experiential and relational, not merely propositional; intensified form of γνῶσις”knowledge,” “true knowledge,” “full knowledge”The central epistemic term of 2 Peter: relational, growing knowledge of God/Christ that is the ground of grace, peace, virtue, and escape from corruption.المعرفة (الكاملة/الحقيقية) (al-ma’rifah [al-kāmilah / al-ḥaqīqiyyah]) — new term, High risk: ma’rifah is the technical term for Sufi mystical/experiential gnosis of God attained through graduated spiritual stages (as opposed to ‘ilm, textual-propositional knowledge). Using ma’rifah risks importing a Sufi framework of esoteric spiritual ascent. Must be qualified every time as relational knowledge of God secured through Christ, received by faith, not attained through mystical technique.
θεία δύναμις (v.3)theia dynamis”divine power”God’s own inherent supernatural power”divine power,” “His divine power”The source of “everything needed for life and godliness” — power granted, not achieved.القوة الإلهية (al-quwwah al-ilāhiyyah). High risk: pairs with θεία φύσις below; ensure “divine” (الإلهية) is not read as diffusing God’s power into creation generally.
ἀρετή (v.3, of God; v.5, of believers)aretē”virtue, excellence, moral goodness”Greek philosophical-ethical term for moral/practical excellence (rare in NT — only here and Phil 4:8)“virtue,” “excellence,” “moral excellence”Both an attribute of God (“who called us by his own glory and virtue”) and a virtue believers are to add to their faith — divinely rooted, not self-generated Aristotelian achievement.الفضيلة (al-faḍīlah). Medium-High risk: compatible with Islamic and general Arabic ethical vocabulary, but must be explicitly anchored as flowing from faith/grace (v.5’s “add to your faith virtue”), not an independent philosophical achievement earning divine favor.
ἐπαγγέλματα (v.4)epangelmata”promises”God’s declared, guaranteed future gifts”promises""Precious and very great promises” — the ground for escaping corruption and partaking of the divine nature. Reuse baseline covenant pattern (العهد shares the promise-concept). Medium risk.
θείας φύσεως κοινωνοί (v.4)theias physeōs koinōnoi”partakers/sharers of the divine nature”participation in God’s moral/communicable attributes (holiness, love, incorruption) through union with Christ — NOT an ontological merging of essence”partakers of the divine nature,” “share in God’s own nature”The single most theologically loaded phrase in 2 Peter: believers become morally like God (holy, incorruptible, loving) through the Spirit’s transforming work, without becoming divine in essence. CRITICAL — new registry entry required, equivalent risk tier to baseline “incarnation” and “adoption”: Islamic tawḥīd holds Allah’s essence (dhāt) is categorically unshareable with any creature — claiming to “share the divine nature” is a paradigm case of shirk from an Islamic standpoint, on par with claims of Christ’s deity. Must be actively distinguished from (a) the baseline-forbidden pantheistic ḥulūl framework, and (b) any implication of literal essence-fusion; teach explicitly as moral/relational transformation (holiness, incorruption, love) through union with Christ, a distinctly Christian doctrine (theosis-adjacent but not identical to Eastern Orthodox theosis, and certainly not to Sufi fana’ / mystical self-dissolution into the divine).
φθορά (v.4; also 2:12,19)phthora”corruption, decay, ruin”moral/spiritual decay leading to destruction; also physical decay”corruption,” “depravity,” “decay”The moral corruption “in the world because of evil desire,” from which believers escape by grace.الفساد (al-fasād). Medium risk: fasād is a significant Quranic term (corruption/mischief “on the earth,” often used in a social-political register in contemporary Arabic media); must contextually clarify this is personal moral-spiritual corruption/decay tied to sinful desire, not primarily social disorder.
ἐπιθυμία (v.4)epithymia”desire, lust, craving”disordered, sin-driving desire (occasionally neutral “longing” elsewhere in Greek, but consistently negative in this context)“lust,” “desire,” “corrupt desire”The engine of the world’s corruption, from which believers are delivered.الشهوة (al-shahwah). Low-Medium risk, standard, compatible with Islamic ethical vocabulary of disciplining desire.
σπουδή / πᾶσαν σπουδὴν παρεισενέγκαντες (v.5; also v.10, v.15, 3:14)spoudē”diligence, earnestness, effort, haste”eager, all-out effort/exertion”make every effort,” “diligence,” “giving all diligence”The believer’s active, effortful response (not passive) to God’s gift — added onto, not the ground of, salvation already given. High risk — flag explicitly: this word and jihād share the same triliteral root ج-ه-د (effort/struggle/exertion). While “ijtihād” also has an ordinary non-technical sense (“diligent effort”), translators and readers may register the root-resonance with jihād (holy struggle) and/or ijtihād as the specific Islamic legal-hermeneutical category (independent juristic reasoning). Prefer a periphrasis such as “بذلوا كل جهدٍ ممكن” (exert every possible effort) over the bare noun اجتهاد where a Critical/High-risk passage is at stake, and always keep this diligence framed as the fruit of grace already received (v.3-4), never its ground — parallel to the baseline obedience_of_faith caution.
Virtue chain (v.5-7): πίστις, ἀρετή, γνῶσις, ἐγκράτεια, ὑπομονή, εὐσέβεια, φιλαδελφία, ἀγάπηpistis, aretē, gnōsis, egkrateia, hypomonē, eusebeia, philadelphia, agapē”faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, love”a graduated chain of Christian character qualities”faith…virtue…knowledge…self-control…perseverance…godliness…brotherly kindness…love”The believer’s active, Spirit-enabled growth in character — this list anchors the curriculum doctrine “Growing in Christian Virtue.”See individual entries below.
— γνῶσις (v.5, general virtue, distinct from ἐπίγνωσις above)gnōsis”knowledge”discernment/insight as a moral virtue in the list”knowledge”A distinct, more general sense from ἐπίγνωσις — moral discernment as a character trait to be cultivated.المعرفة (al-ma’rifah) — same Arabic word as ἐπίγνωσις; High risk: the Arabic rendering collapses two distinct Greek terms into one word. Translators must supply a contextual qualifier (e.g., “معرفة تُضاف إلى الإيمان,” knowledge added to faith, for the virtue-list sense, vs. “المعرفة الحقة بالله/بالمسيح” for the relational-knowing sense) to preserve the distinction Peter intends.
— ἐγκράτεια (v.6)egkrateia”self-control, self-mastery”mastery over one’s own desires/impulses”self-control,” “temperance”Restraint over the ἐπιθυμία (desire) named in v.4.ضبط النفس (ḍabṭ al-nafs). Low-Medium risk, broadly compatible with Islamic ethical vocabulary of self-discipline (cf. fasting, self-restraint).
— ὑπομονή (v.6)hypomonē”steadfastness, patient endurance”active perseverance under pressure/trial, not passive resignation”perseverance,” “steadfastness,” “patience”Endurance grounded in hope of future glory (cf. Romans 5:3-4 pattern), not fatalistic acceptance.الصبر (al-ṣabr). High risk — new registry entry required: ṣabr is one of the most central Islamic virtues (paired with shukr), explicitly reward-earning within Islamic soteriology (deeds weighed on the mīzān). NT hypomonē must be taught as fruit flowing from assured hope already secured in Christ, not a merit deposited toward an uncertain final outcome — same caution as baseline grace entry.
— εὐσέβεια (v.6-7; also 3:11)eusebeia”godliness, piety, reverence toward God”reverent, devoted life oriented toward God”godliness,” “piety”Reuse the established Arabic Bible-translation-tradition rendering.التقوى (al-taqwā). High risk — new registry entry required: taqwā is the single most central ethical-spiritual category in the Quran (God-consciousness/piety, explicitly tied to divine favor and reward — e.g., Q2:197 “the best provision is taqwā”). Though it is the established Van Dyck/NAV-tradition rendering for eusebeia and should be retained, every occurrence needs contextual reinforcement that this godliness is the fruit of grace/knowledge already given (1:3), not a merit-accumulating practice securing God’s favor.
— φιλαδελφία (v.7)philadelphia”brotherly love/affection”love among fellow believers specifically”brotherly kindness,” “brotherly affection”Reuse pattern near baseline fellowship (الشركة).المحبة الأخوية (al-maḥabbah al-akhawiyyah). Low-Medium risk.
— ἀγάπη (v.7)agapē”love”self-giving, unconditional love”love”The capstone virtue of the chain.المحبة (al-maḥabbah). Low risk, standard.
καθαρισμός τῶν πάλαι αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν (v.9)katharismos tōn palai autou hamartiōn”cleansing/purification of his former sins”forgiveness/cleansing received at conversion”cleansing from past sins,” “purged from former sins”The one who lacks these virtues has “forgotten” this founding cleansing — grace received, not merely a ritual event. Medium-High risk: avoid letting طهارة/تطهير collapse into ritual-purity connotation (wuḍū’/ghusl-style washing), per the caution already established in the baseline holy entry; this is forgiveness-based, once-for-all cleansing tied to faith in Christ, not repeatable ritual ablution.
κλῆσιν καὶ ἐκλογήν (v.10)bebaian klēsin kai eklogēn”confirm/make firm your calling and election”assurance that one’s effectual calling and election are genuine, evidenced by growing virtue”confirm your calling and election,” “make your calling and election sure”Reuse baseline called/calling (الدعوة/المدعوون) and election (اختيار الله).الدعوة والاختيار — reuse baseline exactly. High risk per baseline entries; ties to baseline effectual_calling doctrine and its caution against collapsing into folk qadar fatalism.
εἴσοδος εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον βασιλείαν (v.11)eisodos eis tēn aiōnion basileian”entrance into the eternal kingdom”final, secure entry into God’s everlasting reign”entrance into the eternal kingdom”Reuse baseline kingdom_of_god (ملكوت الله). Medium risk, per baseline kingdom_mission doctrine note (avoid political/khilāfah resonance).
σκήνωμα (v.13)skēnōma”tent, tabernacle”metaphor for the physical body as a temporary dwelling”tent,” “body,” “earthly dwelling”Peter’s approaching death, described as leaving a temporary tent. Low risk, standard metaphor.
ἔξοδος (v.15)exodos”departure, exodus”euphemism for death, echoing Israel’s Exodus and (by narrative link) the Transfiguration’s discussion of Christ’s own “exodus” (Luke 9:31)“departure,” “decease”Peter’s death as a dignified, purposeful “departure,” not annihilation. Low risk.

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
ψευδοπροφῆται / ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (v.1)pseudoprophētai / pseudodidaskaloi”false prophets / false teachers”those who claim divine authority for teaching that contradicts or corrupts apostolic doctrine”false prophets,” “false teachers”The central antagonist category of ch. 2, anchoring the curriculum doctrine “False Teachers and Their Judgment.” Reuse baseline prophet (نبي) as root concept, negated. High risk: must be defined by doctrinal criteria given in the text itself (denying Christ, v.1; greed, v.3; immorality, v.2,10-14) rather than left as a vague “heretic” label that could be redirected at any theological outsider, including orthodox Christians, in a majority-Muslim setting.
αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας (v.1)haireseis apōleias”destructive heresies/sects”doctrinally ruinous factions/teachings”destructive heresies”Teachings that lead their adherents to destruction. High risk: بدعة (bid’ah) is a major, precisely defined Islamic category — forbidden innovation deviating from the Prophet’s/companions’ precedent (sunnah). Using it can function as a useful bridge (“this, too, is a category your tradition already names as dangerous”) but must be qualified: the criterion of a destructive “heresy” here is denial of Christ’s redeeming lordship and immoral conduct, not deviation from a fixed communal precedent.
ἀρνούμενοι τὸν ἀγοράσαντα αὐτοὺς δεσπότην (v.1)arnoumenoi ton agorasanta autous despotēn”denying the Master/Sovereign who bought them”δεσπότης = absolute owner-ruler; ἀγοράζω = to purchase/redeem at a price”denying the Master who bought them,” “denying the Lord who bought them”A redemption-purchase claim: Christ owns believers because he purchased them (his atoning death) — false teachers deny this ownership/redemption. CRITICAL — new registry entry required, tied to baseline salvation doctrine: the Quran explicitly denies that one soul can bear or discharge another’s burden/debt (6:164) — a substitutionary “purchase” of persons by another’s death has no parallel in Islamic soteriology and must be taught deliberately, not assumed.
ταχινὴν ἀπώλειαν / ἀπώλεια (vv.1,3; also 3:7,16)apōleia”destruction, ruin, perdition”final, ruinous judgment”destruction,” “swift destruction,” “perdition”The certain, self-incurred end of false teachers and unrepentant sinners; ties to the curriculum doctrine “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment.”الهلاك (al-halāk). High risk: must retain full eschatological weight (final, certain ruin under God’s judgment), not soften to a this-worldly “downfall” or “loss.”
κρίσις / κρίμα / κατάκρισις (vv.3,4,9)krisis / krima / katakrisis”judgment, condemnation, sentence”God’s forensic verdict, already being executed against fallen angels and reserved for the unrighteous”judgment,” “condemnation”Reuse concept adjacent to baseline justification (التبرير, the positive counterpart) — here the negative, condemning verdict.الدينونة / الحكم (al-daynūnah / al-ḥukm). High risk, ties to “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment” doctrine; must be forensic/certain, not probabilistic (parallel caution to baseline salvation).
Ταρταρώσας (v.4)angeloi hamartēsantes … tartarōsas”angels who sinned … cast into Tartarus”Ταρταρώσας is a unique NT coinage from Tartarus, the Greek mythological abyss of punishment, used illustratively for the place/state of confinement of fallen angels awaiting judgment”angels who sinned…cast them into hell/Tartarus/the abyss”Precedent-setting example: God does not overlook even angelic rebellion. ṭaraḥahum fī l-hāwiyah). Medium risk: render functionally as “الهاوية” (the abyss/pit) rather than importing جهنم (Jahannam, the standard Quranic hell-term reserved elsewhere in Christian Arabic Bible usage for Gehenna) in this specific verse, to preserve Peter’s distinct illustrative reference to a place of pre-judgment confinement for fallen angels, not the final lake of fire. A footnote explaining the Greek mythological background term is advisable.
Nōe dikaiosynēs kēryka”brought a flood on the world of the ungodly … Noah, a preacher of righteousness”historical judgment-and-deliverance pattern”the flood…Noah, a preacher of righteousness”Reuse baseline righteousness (البر); Noah’s rescue (with 7 others) alongside the world’s judgment previews the pattern of ch.3’s final judgment. (Nūḥ, kāriz al-birr). Medium risk: Nūḥ is a shared, positively-regarded Quranic prophet (Q11, Q71), but the Quranic account differs in emphasis (focused on his son’s refusal and near-universal disbelief) and does not carry Peter’s specific typological point (a preview of final judgment/salvation pattern) — supply this context explicitly, per the baseline caution on “david.”
ὑπόδειγμα (vv.6-8)Sodoma kai Gomorra … hypodeigma”Sodom and Gomorrah … an example/pattern”historical judgment precedent; Lot as a righteous man rescued out of it”Sodom and Gomorrah…an example,” “Lot, a righteous man”Reuse baseline righteousness for “righteous Lot.” (Sadūm wa ‘Amūrah, wa Lūṭ al-ṣiddīq). Medium risk: Lūṭ is a Quranic prophet and the cities’ judgment is a shared narrative (Q11, Q26, Q29), but the Quran generally does not name “Gomorrah” separately and frames the sin somewhat differently; the shared narrative is a genuine bridge, but the intended lesson here — God rescues the righteous even while judging the wicked, previewing Christ’s return — should be drawn out explicitly.
ὑποζύγιον ἄφωνον ἐφθέγξατο (v.15-16)Balaam … misthon adikias … hypozygion aphōnon ephthegxato”Balaam…wages of unrighteousness…a speechless donkey spoke”a prophet-for-hire who loved unrighteous gain, restrained by God through a speaking donkey”Balaam…the wages of wickedness…a donkey spoke”An example of a corrupt, mercenary “prophet” — direct parallel to the false teachers of ch.2, who likewise teach for profit (v.3). (Bal’ām … ujrat al-ẕulm … ḥimār a’jam naṭaqa). Low-Medium risk: Balaam is not a Quranic figure and will be unfamiliar to readers from a Muslim background — a brief explanatory note (not a translation change) is needed rather than a doctrinal caution.
δοῦλοι ὑπάρχοντες τῆς φθορᾶς (v.19)douloi hyparchontes tēs phthoras”being themselves slaves of corruption, while promising freedom”the irony of false teachers who promise liberty but are themselves enslaved to moral decay”slaves of corruption,” “promising freedom while themselves slaves”Reuse φθορά (corruption, see ch.1); an ironic reversal — freedom offered by false teachers is itself bondage.عبيدٌ للفساد (‘abīd li-l-fasād). Medium risk: sharpens the freedom/slavery contrast — pairs meaningfully with the positive سبد/‘abd resonance noted in ch.1 (slave of Christ vs. slave of corruption).
ἐπίγνωσις τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ σωτῆρος (v.20)epignōsis tou Kyriou kai sōtēros”the knowledge of the Lord and Savior”reuse ἐπίγνωσις (ch.1) + κύριος (baseline) + σωτήρ (new, ch.1)“knowledge of the Lord and Savior”Apostasy is described as having genuinely “known” the way of salvation and then turning back — a severe warning. High risk, compounding the risks of all three component terms.
ὁδὸν τῆς δικαιοσύνης / τὴν ἁγίαν ἐντολήν (vv.21-22)hodon tēs dikaiosynēs / tēn hagian entolēn”the way of righteousness / the holy commandment”reuse baseline righteousness (البر) and holy (مقدس)“the way of righteousness,” “the holy commandment”The apostates’ turning back from a way once known — reinforces baseline sainthood/sanctification risk notes. High risk, per baseline entries.
κύων ἐπιστρέψας ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον ἐξέραμα (v.22)kyōn epistrepsas epi to idion exerama”a dog returning to its own vomit”proverbial image (citing Prov 26:11) of relapse into former corruption”dog returns to its vomit”Vivid proverb depicting apostasy as a return to what one has been rescued from. Low-Medium risk: dogs carry a similarly low/unclean cultural valence in Arab culture as in the source text, so the proverb transfers naturally; no softening needed.

Chapter 3

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
ἐμπαῖκται ἐν ἐμπαιγμονῇ (v.3)empaiktai en empaigmonē”scoffers, mocking”those who deride the promise of Christ’s return as sinful desire “walking after their own lusts” dictates”scoffers,” “mockers”Introduces the ch.3 argument: the delay of the parousia will be mocked, but mockery does not disprove the promise.المستهزئون (al-mustahzi’ūn). Low risk, standard vocabulary.
ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ ἐπαγγελία τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ (v.4)pou estin hē epangelia tēs parousias autou”where is the promise of his coming?“the scoffers’ rhetorical challenge to the reality of Christ’s return”Where is the promise of his coming?”Reuse παρουσία (see 1:16 above) — this is the central occurrence anchoring the curriculum doctrine “The Certainty of Christ’s Return.”Reuse المجيء (الثاني) — see 1:16 entry. CRITICAL, same nuzūl ‘Isā collision noted above; this verse is where the doctrine of Christ’s certain, future, glorious return as divine judge must be most explicitly and carefully defended, in direct contrast to the Islamic nuzūl ‘Isā narrative.
γῆ (v.5)logō tou Theou ouranoi … gē”by the word of God the heavens…and the earth”creation accomplished by God’s spoken word (echoing Genesis 1)“by the word of God the heavens existed…and the earth”Establishes God’s sovereign, word-based control over creation as the basis for confidence that his spoken promise (the parousia) will likewise be accomplished.بكلمة الله (bi-kalimat Allāh). Medium risk: “كلمة الله” (Word of God) is a rich shared term but must not be confused with the Islamic Kalām/eternal-Quran debates; here it simply denotes God’s effective creative speech-act, a concept broadly shared and safe.
κατακλυσθεὶς ἀπώλετο (v.6)kataklystheis apōleto”was destroyed, having been deluged”reuse the Genesis flood (see ch.2 Noah entry)“the world…was destroyed by flood”The flood as historical precedent for the coming fire-judgment.Reuse ch.2 treatment.
πυρὶ τηρεῖται (v.7)pyri tēreitai”is being kept/reserved for fire”the present heavens and earth are presently reserved, awaiting a future fiery judgment”reserved for fire,” “kept for the day of judgment”Anchors the curriculum doctrine “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment”; a real, cosmic, historical future event, not merely symbolic.محفوظة للنار (maḥfūẕah li-l-nār). High risk: retain the sense of present, ongoing divine reservation (an already-determined future event), not vague or symbolic destruction.
μία ἡμέρα παρὰ Κυρίῳ ὡς χίλια ἔτη (v.8)mia hēmera para Kyriō hōs chilia etē”one day with the Lord is as a thousand years”God’s transcendence over created time; an answer to the “delay” objection”a day is like a thousand years”Establishes that apparent delay reflects God’s transcendent relationship to time, not failure or absence of the promise. Medium risk, standard, well-known verse; low ambiguity.
ἀλλὰ μακροθυμεῖ εἰς ἡμᾶς / μακροθυμία (vv.9,15)ou bradynei … alla makrothymei / makrothymia”he is not slow … but is patient/longsuffering”God’s deliberate, purposive forbearance — delaying judgment to give space for repentance, not indifference or inability”not slow…but patient,” “the patience of our Lord”Anchors the curriculum doctrine “Patience of God’s Timing” — God’s delay is itself an act of mercy, not evidence against the promise. High risk — new registry entry required: Al-Ḥalīm (“The Most Forbearing/Clement”) is one of the 99 Names of Allah, making this a genuinely positive bridge concept — but must be explicitly tied to v.9’s stated purpose (giving opportunity for repentance leading to salvation) so it is not read as arbitrary delay, divine unconcern, or generic fatalistic forbearance detached from any redemptive aim.
μὴ βουλόμενός τινας ἀπολέσθαι ἀλλὰ πάντας εἰς μετάνοιαν χωρῆσαι (v.9)mē boulomenos tinas apolesthai alla pantas eis metanoian chōrēsai”not willing any to perish but all to come to repentance”God’s expressed desire for universal repentance, tied to his patience”not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance”Reinforces baseline universal_scope_of_gospel and pairs with the new μετάνοια entry below.See below for μετάνοια. High risk overall for the universality claim — must not be softened, per baseline validation rule on universality passages, nor collapsed into universalism (all invited, not all automatically saved).
μετάνοια (v.9)metanoia”repentance, a change of mind/heart”a Spirit-enabled reorientation of the whole person toward God, not merely regret or a formal legal-transactional act”repentance”The intended response to God’s patience — the doorway to escaping the coming judgment.التوبة (al-tawbah). High risk — new registry entry required: tawbah is the defining Islamic category for turning back to Allah after sin, typically structured as a formal process (sincere remorse + ceasing the sin + resolving not to repeat + sometimes restitution) that “wipes” the sin from account when accepted. NT metanoia must be taught as a heart-level turning enabled by God’s prior kindness/patience (cf. Romans 2:4, which uses the same underlying concept) and leading into the assured salvation already secured in Christ — not a self-generated, formula-based transaction whose acceptance remains uncertain until Judgment Day.
ἥξει ἡ ἡμέρα Κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης (v.10)hēxei hē hēmera Kyriou hōs kleptēs”the Day of the Lord will come like a thief”a specific, Christ-centered day of reckoning and cosmic renewal, arriving suddenly and unexpectedly”the Day of the Lord will come as a thief”Anchors “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment.”يوم الرب (yawm al-Rabb). High risk — new registry entry required: shares surface similarity with the Quranic Yawm al-Qiyāmah / Yawm al-Dīn (safe, shared general concept of a coming Day of Judgment, per the pattern already established in the baseline resurrection entry), but “the Day of the Lord” here is specifically and exclusively tied to the return of Christ as judge (reuse baseline lord, الرب) — this Christ-centered specificity must be retained, not diluted into a generic, religiously-neutral end-times reference. The “thief” image (كلص/كاللص) is low risk, standard.
λυθήσονται (v.10,12)ouranoi pareleusontai, stoicheia lythēsontai”the heavens will pass away, the elements will be dissolved”the present cosmic order’s real, historical dissolution by fire”the heavens will pass away with a roar…the elements will be dissolved by fire”A literal, cosmic, historical event — not merely symbolic language for moral renewal. Medium risk: retain “will pass away/be dissolved” as a real, one-time historical-cosmic event; do not let phrasing suggest an ongoing cyclical process of cosmic destruction-and-recreation (parallel caution to baseline resurrection’s “never reincarnation” note).
καινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινήν, ἐν οἷς δικαιοσύνη κατοικεῖ (v.13)kainous ouranous kai gēn kainēn, en hois dikaiosynē katoikei”new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells”the promised final, renewed created order, characterized by the permanent presence of righteousness”new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells”The positive counterpart to the judgment of v.10-12; reuse baseline righteousness (البر). Medium risk: genuine re-creation/renewal, not a cyclical world-age doctrine; البر here must retain its baseline forensic/relational sense (righteousness as God’s gift dwelling in the renewed world), not drift into the works-checklist collision flagged in the baseline righteousness entry.
σπίλοι καὶ ἄμωμοι (v.14)spiloi kai amōmoi”spotless and blameless”moral purity/integrity in view of the coming day”spotless and blameless,” “without spot or blemish”The believer’s aim: a holy life lived in light of the certain future judgment/renewal. Low-Medium risk, standard purity vocabulary; reuse baseline holy-adjacent caution (moral, not ritual, purity).
τὴν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν μακροθυμίαν σωτηρίαν ἡγεῖσθε (v.15)tēn tou Kyriou hēmōn makrothymian sōtērian hēgeisthe”regard the patience of our Lord as salvation”God’s ongoing patience is itself to be understood as an outworking of, and opportunity for, salvation”regard the patience of our Lord as salvation”Directly links the “Patience of God’s Timing” doctrine to the “Salvation” doctrine (baseline Critical term الخلاص).Reuse الصبر/طول الأناة (see above) + الخلاص (baseline, exact reuse). Critical-High risk, compounding both component risks.
ὡς καὶ τὰς λοιπὰς γραφάς (v.16)pasais tais epistolais … hōs kai tas loipas graphas”in all his letters … as also the rest of the Scriptures”Peter explicitly classes Paul’s letters as γραφή (Scripture), alongside the OT”in all his letters…as they do the other Scriptures”A direct, early canon-affirming statement: apostolic writings are placed on par with OT Scripture, reinforcing the curriculum doctrine “The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture.” High risk: this verse is valuable apologetic ground against the taḥrīf (textual-corruption) claim, since it shows the apostolic community itself recognizing and fixing a body of authoritative Scripture within the first generation — this should be actively drawn out, per the existing baseline caution under gospel.
πρὸς τὴν ἰδίαν αὐτῶν ἀπώλειαν (v.16)hoi amatheis kai astēriktoi strebloumsin … pros tēn idian autōn apōleian”the untaught and unstable twist [them]…to their own destruction”misinterpretation/distortion of Scripture as a serious, destruction-bringing danger”the untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction”Reuse ἀπώλεια (destruction, ch.2). Warns that mishandling Scripture is itself spiritually dangerous, not a neutral academic matter. High risk — note on the verb choice: يُحرّف (yuḥarrif, “to distort/twist”) shares its root with تحريف (taḥrīf), the very term mainstream Islamic doctrine uses to accuse the Bible itself of corruption. This creates an ironic but manageable double-edged risk: the verse can be leveraged apologetically (Scripture warns against exactly the kind of distortion Islam alleges happened to it, showing the early church’s vigilance over textual integrity) but must be worded so it is unmistakably about individual misreaders distorting a fixed, reliable text, not a concession that the text itself was corrupted.
αὐξάνετε ἐν χάριτι καὶ γνώσει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (v.18)auxanete en chariti kai gnōsei tou Kyriou hēmōn kai sōtēros Iēsou Christou”grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”closing exhortation, reprising 1:1-3’s grace/knowledge pairing”grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”Reuse baseline grace (النعمة) + γνῶσις/ἐπίγνωσις (المعرفة, new) + lord (الرب, baseline) + savior (المخلّص, new).Composite of established terms — see individual entries. High/Critical in aggregate.
αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς ἡμέραν αἰῶνος (v.18)autō hē doxa kai nyn kai eis hēmeran aiōnos”to him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity”a doxology (ascription of worship-glory) addressed directly to Jesus Christ”to him be glory both now and forever”The letter closes by directing to Jesus the glory-ascription that belongs to God alone — the final and climactic deity-of-Christ statement in the book.Reuse baseline glory (المجد) exactly. CRITICAL: doxological worship-language addressed to Jesus specifically is functionally equivalent to worship reserved for Allah alone in Islamic theology; this must not be flattened into generic praise-of-a-great-teacher language.

Full-Book Coverage Confirmation

All three chapters of 2 Peter have been reviewed. Chapter 1 (vv. 1-15 plus the verse-by-verse core passage treatment of vv. 16-21), Chapter 2, and Chapter 3 each introduced substantial new load-bearing theological vocabulary; no chapter is without new terms requiring analysis. Terms already governed by the baseline Romans translation memory are cited and reused exactly, with additional 2 Peter-specific risk notes recorded where new intersections arise (e.g., σωτήρ pairing with θεός in 1:1; παρουσία’s collision with nuzūl ‘Isā).
