Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Jude (Koine Greek → Arabic)

Book Overview and Full-Coverage Note

Jude is a single-chapter, 25-verse letter. Per the PRD Phase 1 mandate, this analysis covers the entire book, every verse, first to last — there is no chapter to omit. The structure below therefore differs slightly from a multi-chapter book:

  • Part 1 gives verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage, Jude 1:3–23 (the body of the letter: the appeal to contend for the faith, the roll call of Old Testament judgment-types, the description of the false teachers, and the closing pastoral instructions).
  • Part 2 gives the required “chapter-by-chapter study of the whole book.” Because Jude has only one chapter, Part 2 covers the material outside the core passage — the salutation (1:1–2) and the doxology (1:24–25) — with the same term-by-term rigor, and explicitly cross-references Part 1 so that all 25 verses of the book are accounted for with no silent omissions.

All renderings of terms already established in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json) are reused exactly and marked “[Baseline]” below. New terms introduced by Jude’s distinctive vocabulary are marked “[New]” and are carried into 08_core_glossary.md for registry extension.

Part 1: Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis (Jude 1:3–23)

Jude 1:3

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
sōtēria
deliverance, rescue
salvation from sin/death; deliverance in a this-worldly or eschatological sense
salvation, deliverance
The shared, common salvation of the whole believing community — a settled fact being defended, not sought.[Baseline] الخلاص (al-khalāṣ) — Critical. Reuse exactly. Reinforces that what is being defended is a completed, secured deliverance, not a pending outcome (per baseline “salvation” note on Islamic mizan).
epagōnizesthai
to contend/struggle intensely (from ἀγών, an athletic contest)
to fight for, to strive earnestly on behalf of something, to compete for a prize
contend for, fight for, strive for
The letter’s programmatic verb: believers must actively, effortfully defend right doctrine against corruption from within. Athletic-contest metaphor, not primarily military.[New] CRITICAL. The verb’s root (ج-ه-د) is cognate with the Arabic root underlying “jihad.” Established pre-Islamic and Van Dyck Christian usage renders this family with جهاد/يجاهد (cf. 1 Tim 6:12, 2 Tim 4:7), so the rendering itself is not novel — but it is the single highest-stakes lexical choice in the entire book. In contemporary Arabic, جهاد is overwhelmingly associated with armed struggle. Every occurrence must be scaffolded with explicit teaching that this is a nonviolent, doctrinal-perseverance contest (an athlete’s discipline, not a soldier’s combat) or the risk of the sense drifting toward physical struggle must be actively defused in surrounding material. See doctrine “Contending for the Faith Once Delivered.”
hapax paradotheisē
handed down/delivered once (and for all)
a completed act of transmission with no further installments; a fixed, closed body of content
once for all delivered, once entrusted
The content of “the faith” is a fixed apostolic deposit, complete and unchanging — not an evolving or progressively superseding revelation.[New] CRITICAL. Direct collision with the Islamic doctrine of naskh (abrogation), where later revelation supersedes and can nullify earlier revelation, and with the broader claim that a final revelation (the Quran, through the “Seal of the Prophets”) supersedes prior scriptures. Jude’s “once for all” is a bridge point that must be actively deployed, not merely defended: it affirms the very idea Muslim readers already value (a fixed, guarded, uncorrupted deposit) but locates that fixed deposit in the apostolic gospel about Christ, completed in the first century — not open to later revision by any subsequent claimant.
τῇ …
tē … pistei
the faith
the body of belief entrusted to the church; personal trust in Christ
the faith, the faith system, belief
Here πίστις shifts from the relational-trust sense (Romans) to the content sense — “the faith” as a defined body of apostolic teaching to be defended.[Baseline] الإيمان (al-īmān) — High. Reuse exactly, but flag the sense-shift explicitly: this occurrence denotes the deposit of doctrine, not merely personal trust — closer to (though not identical with) how “al-īmān” can denote creedal content in Islamic usage. This is the one place in the NT corpus where Pauline “relational trust” and a more creedal sense of “the faith” must both be held together without collapsing into pure creedalism.
tois hagiois
to the holy ones / to the saints
the corporate body of believers set apart for God
the saints, the holy ones, God’s people
The recipients of the fixed deposit of faith — every believer, not a spiritual elite.[Baseline] القديسون (al-qiddīsūn) — High. Reuse exactly per baseline “saints” note; avoid الأولياء (Sufi venerated-saints class).
Agapētoi
beloved ones
affectionate direct address
beloved, dear friends
Jude’s pastoral tone toward the audience even as he issues an urgent warning.[New] Low. المحبوبون / أحباء — warm, low-risk vocative; establishes the pastoral register the AI instructions require for relationally warm passages.

Jude 1:4

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
pareisedysan
slipped in secretly / crept in unnoticed
to enter by stealth, infiltrate
crept in, slipped in, wormed their way in
The false teachers are insiders — professing members who infiltrated the community, not outside pagan opponents. Foundational to “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers.”[New] High. تسللوا / دخلوا خفية — must retain the sense of covert infiltration from within the professing community, not open, external opposition; this “insider apostate” category has no exact parallel in mainstream Islamic categories of kufr (external unbelief) and needs explicit teaching.
asebeis
irreverent, impious toward God
those who show disregard/rebellion toward God’s authority; ungodly
ungodly, impious, godless
Jude’s defining label for the false teachers throughout the letter (recurs six times: vv.4, 15 [×2 forms], 18). Central to the doctrine “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers.”[New] High. الفجّار (al-fujjār) / الفجور — established Van Dyck term (cf. Jude 4 tradition). Shared vocabulary with Quranic usage (e.g., 82:14), so the word is safe, but the doctrine is not: these are covenant-community insiders under specific, foretold judgment, not merely “sinners” in a generic deeds-ledger sense.
tēn tou theou hēmōn charita
the grace of our God
God’s unmerited favor
the grace of our God, God’s grace
The false teachers pervert grace into a license for sensuality — the same grace/works tension Romans addresses.[Baseline] النعمة (al-ni’mah) — High. Reuse exactly. The abuse in view (grace as license for ἀσέλγεια) must not be allowed to suggest that grace itself is dangerous; the corruption is in the false teachers’ distortion, not the doctrine.
metatithentes eis aselgeian
turning/changing into unrestrained sensuality
perverting, redirecting toward moral licentiousness
turning into licentiousness, perverting into sensuality
Doctrinal corruption with a concrete moral outworking — antinomianism.[New] Medium.
ton monon despotēn kai kyrion hēmōn Iēsoun Christon
our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ
δεσπότης = absolute owner/sovereign master (of a slave); κύριος = supreme lord
our only Sovereign and Lord
Two distinct Greek titles of absolute authority both applied to Jesus, joined by “only” (μόνον) — a strong claim of Christ’s exclusive deity, distinct from and stronger than mere teacher-respect.[New/Baseline combined] CRITICAL. κύριος reuses baseline الرب exactly (Critical). δεσπότην is a new term: السيد (al-Sayyid). High collision risk: “al-Sayyid” is also the honorific title for descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (Sayyid/Sharif) in much of the Arab world. Applying it to Jesus risks being heard as a human-honorific title rather than an absolute-ownership/sovereign-master claim. Recommend retaining the qualifier “الوحيد” (only) already present in the Greek (μόνον) at every occurrence — “السيد الوحيد” — to preserve the exclusivity claim and reduce confusion with the honorific usage.
arnoumenoi
denying
to disown, reject, refuse to acknowledge
denying, disowning, rejecting
The false teachers’ functional denial of Christ’s lordship through their conduct, not necessarily a verbal creedal denial.[New] High. ينكرون — straightforward, but must be taught alongside “lordship_of_christ” (baseline Critical doctrine): denial-by-life is as serious as denial-by-word.

Jude 1:5

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
ho kyrios … sōsas
the Lord, having saved
God’s past act of historical deliverance (the Exodus)
the Lord who saved / who rescued
First of three OT “types” (Israel, angels, Sodom). Establishes the doctrine “Old Testament Warnings as Types”: God’s past historical judgments as patterns for present warning.[Baseline] الرب (al-Rabb) — Critical, reuse. Note the textual tradition varies between “the Lord” and “Jesus” here; treat as referring to the same divine agent regardless of variant, consistent with the high Christology of v.4.
tous mē pisteusantas
those who did not believe
those lacking trust/faith
the unbelieving, those who did not believe
Even having been delivered, unbelief brought destruction on a second generation — a warning against presumption.[Baseline] يؤمنون / غير المؤمنين — root of الإيمان (al-īmān), High. Reinforces that belonging to the covenant community once (Exodus deliverance) does not exempt one from the necessity of ongoing trust.
apōlesen
destroyed
to bring to ruin/destruction
destroyed, ruined
Actual, historical, past divine judgment — not hypothetical. Grounds the doctrine “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” in precedent.[New] Medium. أهلك — standard judgment vocabulary; shares root with هلاك (perdition), broadly compatible.

Jude 1:6

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
angelous
angels
heavenly created spirit-beings
angels
Second OT-adjacent “type”: angels who rebelled are already under judgment, not merely to be judged in the future.[New] Medium. ملائكة (malā’ika) — shared vocabulary with Islam’s six articles of faith. Collision risk is doctrinal, not lexical: mainstream Islamic theology generally holds angels incapable of disobedience (contrasted with jinn/Iblis); Jude’s premise of rebellious, judged angels needs explicit teaching, not silent assumption of shared ground.
tous mē tērēsantas tēn heautōn archēn
who did not keep their own position/domain
ἀρχή = rank, sphere of authority, realm (not “beginning” here)
who did not keep their positions, who abandoned their proper domain
Introduces Jude’s keyword τηρέω (“keep”) in its negative form — a programmatic irony that recurs in vv.1, 13, 21, 24: those who failed to “keep” their place are themselves now “kept” for judgment.[New] High. لم يحفظوا رئاستهم/مقامهم — يحفظ (yaḥfaẕu, “keep/guard”) must be tracked as a single Jude-wide keyword; see full note under v.13 and v.21.
eis krisin megalēs hēmeras
for the judgment of the great day
a specific, appointed future day of reckoning
for the judgment of the great day
Eschatological judgment already assigned to fallen angels, awaiting execution.[New] Medium. لدينونة اليوم العظيم — دينونة (dīnūnah) shares the root د-ي-ن with الدين (“religion/judgment”) and with the Quranic يوم الدين (Yawm ad-Dīn); a positive lexical bridge, though the “already assigned, not-yet-executed” two-stage judgment structure needs explanation, since mainstream Islamic eschatology emphasizes a single future Day without this “sentenced now, executed later” pattern.
desmois aidiois hypo zophon
with eternal chains under gloom/darkness
permanent imprisonment in deep darkness
in eternal chains, in everlasting bonds, under darkness
Vivid imagery of the fallen angels’ current confinement.[New] Low-Medium. بقيود أبدية تحت الظلام/القتام — vivid but low doctrinal collision; standard descriptive vocabulary.

Jude 1:7

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
Sodoma kai Gomorra
Sodom and Gomorrah
the two judged cities of Genesis 19
Sodom and Gomorrah
Third OT “type”: destroyed cities as a standing exhibit of judgment.[New] Medium. سدوم وعمورة — proper nouns. The Quran narrates the same core event under “the people of Lot” (qawm Lūṭ) without naming the cities as prominently; readers may not immediately connect “Sodom/Gomorrah” to the familiar qawm Lūṭ narrative. Supply the connection explicitly rather than assuming recognition.
ekporneusasai … opisō sarkos heteras
having engaged in sexual immorality … after other/strange flesh
gross, culturally boundary-transgressing sexual sin
having given themselves over to sexual immorality, pursued unnatural desire
The specific charge is sexual immorality that transgresses even further than ordinary porneia — traditionally understood to include the attempted assault on the angelic visitors (Genesis 19).[New] Medium. ارتكبن الزنى وسعين وراء جسد آخر/غريب — direct vocabulary, generally compatible with shared moral categories; no major collision beyond ordinary sensitivity around explicit sexual content.
deigma
example, exhibit, specimen
a visible, standing demonstration for others to learn from
example, warning example
The ruined cities function as a permanent visual “type” — a central term for the doctrine “Old Testament Warnings as Types.”[New] Medium. عبرة / مثال — عبرة (a lesson/warning drawn from history) is a well-understood Arabic hermeneutical category (cf. Quranic “la-‘ibratun li-ulil-albab” style usage), making it a workable and largely compatible bridge term, but the underlying typological reading of history as prefiguring future/other judgments should be explained rather than assumed as an automatic reading habit.
pyros aiōniou
of eternal fire
permanent, unending punitive fire
eternal fire
Everlasting judgment, not a temporary or annihilating punishment.[New] High. نار أبدية — compatible with Islamic eschatological imagery of hellfire (nār), but note the doctrine here functions as a type pointing to the false teachers’ impending judgment (v.13’s “gloom of darkness reserved forever”), not solely a final Judgment-Day statement; keep the typological function visible.

Jude 1:8

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
enypniazomenoi
dreaming, relying on visions/dreams
claiming private revelatory experience as authoritative
dreamers, visionaries
The false teachers ground their authority in private dream-visions rather than the apostolic deposit (“the faith once for all delivered,” v.3).[New] Medium. يهذون بأحلامهم / أصحاب رؤى — worth flagging alongside the “inspiration of Scripture” doctrine: the contrast is between claimed private revelation and the fixed, closed apostolic deposit.
sarka … miainousin
they defile the flesh
moral/sexual corruption of the body
defile the flesh, corrupt the body
Concrete moral consequence of their false teaching.[New] Medium.
kyriotēta … athetousin
they reject/set aside lordship-authority
rejecting a sphere of legitimate rule, whether angelic, ecclesial, or (most gravely) Christ’s own
reject authority, set aside dominion, despise lordship
Shares the κύριος root; commentators debate whether this is Christ’s own lordship or a created authority (e.g. angelic rank) being disparaged — either way it is a direct assault on the “Lordship of Christ” doctrine cluster.[New] High. يرفضون السيادة/السلطان — السيادة shares its root directly with الرب (al-Rabb); this reinforces (rather than dilutes) the doctrinal seriousness, but the referent (Christ vs. a lesser authority) must be clarified in teaching notes rather than left ambiguous.
doxas … blasphēmousin
they blaspheme glorious ones/dignities
slandering exalted (likely angelic) beings
blaspheme the glorious ones, slander celestial beings
Rare use of δόξα in the plural for glorious created beings (contrast with baseline “glory” = God’s own radiant honor).[New] Medium. يفترون على أصحاب المجد / الكائنات المكرَّمة — flag as a distinct sense of δόξα from the baseline “glory” (المجد) entry, since here it denotes created dignitaries, not God’s own glory; avoid confusing the two senses in translation notes.

Jude 1:9

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
Michaēl ho archangelos
Michael the archangel
the chief/ranking angel named Michael
Michael the archangel
Even the highest angelic authority defers to God rather than personally pronouncing judgment on the devil — a model of restraint contrasted with the false teachers’ reckless slander (v.8, 10).[New] Medium. ميخائيل رئيس الملائكة — Mīkā’īl appears by name in the Quran (2:98) alongside Jibrīl, a genuinely shared figure and generally positive bridge; however, the Quranic Mīkā’īl’s associated role (traditionally linked to provision/rain) differs from this text’s role as a heavenly contender for Israel’s cause — supply the distinct biblical role explicitly rather than assuming the Quranic association transfers.
tō diabolō
the devil, the slanderer
Satan, the adversary
the devil, Satan
The dispute is with the devil over Moses’ body — content drawn from Jewish tradition (the Assumption of Moses), not narrated in the OT canon itself.[New] Medium. إبليس — established, pre-Islamic Christian Arabic usage; shares its referent (though not narrative details) with the Quranic Iblīs. The lexical choice is safe; the underlying source-material (an extrabiblical Jewish tradition Jude assumes his readers know) needs a canon-and-authority note similar to the Enoch citation in v.14, so the citation is not mistaken for a claim that this extrabiblical account is itself Scripture.
diakrinomenos dielegeto
disputing, was arguing/reasoning
contending in a legal/argumentative sense
disputed, contended, argued
Restrained, formal dispute — not violent confrontation.[New] Low. خاصم / جادل — standard vocabulary.
Epitimēsai soi kyrios
”The Lord rebuke you”
a formal, deferential rebuke-formula (echoing Zechariah 3:2)
“The Lord rebuke you”
Michael does not personally condemn the devil but defers all judgment authority to the Lord — reinforcing exclusive divine prerogative over final judgment.[Baseline term reused: κύριος] لينتهرك الرب — الرب (al-Rabb), Critical, reuse exactly.

Jude 1:10

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
blasphēmousin
they blaspheme/slander
speaking against, defaming
they blaspheme, they slander
Direct contrast with Michael’s restraint in v.9: the false teachers rashly slander what they do not even understand.[New] Medium. يفترون / يجدفون — standard NT vocabulary, reuse consistently with v.8.
aloga zōa
irrational animals
creatures lacking reason
irrational animals, unreasoning creatures
A biting insult: the false teachers act on instinct like animals rather than reasoned conviction, in matters they do understand (bodily appetite).[New] Low.
kataphtheirontai
are destroyed/corrupted
to be ruined, corrupted, brought to destruction
are destroyed, are corrupted
Self-destruction through following base instinct, foreshadowing final judgment.[New] Low-Medium. يفسدون / يهلكون — standard vocabulary.

Jude 1:11

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
Ouai autois
Woe to them!
a prophetic judgment-pronouncement formula
Woe to them!
Formal OT-prophetic pronouncement of doom — genre marker.[New] Low-Medium. الويل لهم — Arabic shares this exact prophetic-woe genre with the Quran (e.g., “wayl lil-muṭaffifīn,” 83:1), making it a strong, compatible bridge; low collision risk.
tē hodō tou Kain
the way of Cain
Cain’s pattern of murderous jealousy/false worship
the way of Cain
First of three OT “type”-figures illustrating the false teachers’ character.[New] Medium. طريق قايين — proper noun. Note the Arabic Bible form قايين (Qāyīn) differs from the Quranic form قابيل (Qābīl); readers familiar with the Quranic Cain-and-Abel account may not immediately recognize “Qāyīn” as the same figure. Supply the connection explicitly.
tē planē tou Balaam misthou
the error of Balaam, for pay/reward
greed-driven false prophecy for hire
the error of Balaam, Balaam’s error for profit
Second type-figure: prophetic ministry corrupted by financial motive.[New] Medium. (Bal’ām) has no direct Quranic counterpart, so this figure will be unfamiliar to readers without prior OT exposure; ضلالة (error/straying) shares the root ض-ل-ل with the Quranic “al-ḍāllīn,” a useful compatible bridge word.
tē antilogia tou Kore
the rebellion/contradiction of Korah
rebellion against divinely appointed authority
the rebellion of Korah
Third type-figure: rebellion against God-appointed leadership (Numbers 16).[New] Medium-High. (Qōraḥ) risks conflation with the similarly-sounding Quranic figure قارون (Qārūn, “Korah” of Quran 28-29), who is associated primarily with wealth and pride, not specifically priestly/leadership rebellion. Distinguish explicitly to prevent readers importing the Qārūn narrative’s emphases onto this text.

Jude 1:12

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
tais agapais hymōn
your love-feasts
communal fellowship meals of the early church, often linked to the Lord’s Supper
your love feasts, your fellowship meals
The false teachers corrupt the community’s most intimate fellowship gatherings — an infiltration of core communal worship life.[New] Medium. ولائم المحبة — a compound built on المحبة (love, new term) and standard “banquet/feast” vocabulary; needs a brief historical-cultural gloss for readers unfamiliar with the early-church love-feast practice.
σπιλάδες (v.l.
spilades (v.l. spiloi)
hidden reefs (or: stains/blemishes)
a textually disputed word: either submerged rocks that wreck ships, or moral “blemishes/stains”
hidden reefs, blemishes
Vivid image (either sense) of hidden danger corrupting the community from within.[New] Medium. صخور خفية / عيوب — flag the textual variant for translators: render consistently with whichever base text the platform’s source Bible follows, and note the image either way communicates hidden, community-endangering corruption.
heautous poimainontes
shepherding themselves
self-serving leadership, feeding themselves rather than the flock
shepherding themselves, self-serving shepherds
Direct indictment of false-teacher leadership as self-interested rather than pastoral — echoes Ezekiel 34.[New] Medium. يرعون أنفسهم — pastoral/shepherd imagery generally compatible across cultures; note the contrast this sets up with Christ as the true Shepherd (not directly named in Jude but implied by contrast).
dis apothanonta ekrizōthenta
twice dead, uprooted
doubly, definitively dead; utterly removed from any possibility of fruitfulness
twice dead, uprooted
Intensified imagery of total spiritual deadness and finality of judgment.[New] Low.

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
asteres planētai
wandering stars
stars that do not follow a fixed, predictable course (root of English “planet”)
wandering stars
Image of instability and false light — those who claim to guide but have no fixed, reliable course.[New] Low-Medium. نجوم تائهة/ضالة — shares root ض-ل-ل (“dalla,” to stray) with the same Quranic vocabulary noted at v.11’s “error”; a compatible, low-risk image.
ho zophos tou skotous eis aiōna tetērētai
the gloom of darkness has been kept/reserved forever
permanent, appointed darkness awaiting them
the blackest darkness reserved forever, gloom of utter darkness kept forever
Ironic climax of Jude’s τηρέω (“keep”) wordplay: the same verb used of God “keeping” believers (v.1, v.21, v.24) is here used of darkness being “kept/reserved” for the false teachers. This antithesis is a load-bearing structural feature of the whole letter and must be made visible in translation notes even where exact repetition of one Arabic verb is not always natural in context.[New] HIGH — structural keyword. Translators must track every occurrence of τηρέω across the letter (vv.1, 6, 13, 21, 24) and, wherever natural, use a consistent Arabic root (ح-ف-ظ) so the deliberate irony (“kept for judgment” vs. “kept by/for God”) remains visible to the Arabic reader as it is to the Greek reader. This directly supports the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.”

Jude 1:14–15

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
Proephēteusen … Henōch
Enoch prophesied
a prophetic utterance attributed to Enoch, “seventh from Adam”
Enoch prophesied
Jude directly quotes 1 Enoch 1:9, a Jewish apocryphal (non-canonical) writing, and calls it prophecy. This is a significant canon-and-inspiration issue distinct from any single word’s rendering.[New] HIGH — doctrinal, not lexical. Ties directly to baseline doctrine “inspiration_of_scripture” (High risk in the doctrine registry). Teaching notes must clarify: Jude’s citation of Enoch’s prophetic saying as true does not grant 1 Enoch canonical status equal to Scripture (the church has never received 1 Enoch as canon); this is categorically different from the Islamic doctrine of wahy (verbatim-dictated, singular, closed-canon revelation) and must not be taught as if Jude is expanding the canon or as if this concedes ground to a “multiple lost scriptures” framework.
ēlthen kyrios en hagiais myriasin autou
the Lord came/comes with his holy myriads
a theophanic coming accompanied by countless holy attendants (angels)
Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones
Echoes Deuteronomy 33:2 and anticipates Christ’s return in glorified judgment — ties “Lord” (κύριος) to eschatological judgment.[Baseline term reused: κύριος; New: ἁγίαις μυριάσιν] الرب (Critical, reuse) … بربوات قديسيه — قديسين here likely denotes angelic hosts rather than glorified human saints; flag this as a distinct referent from the baseline “saints” entry (القديسون = believers) to avoid ambiguity.
poiēsai krisin … elegxai
to execute judgment … to convict/expose
to carry out judicial sentence; to publicly expose guilt
to execute judgment, to convict
Universal, comprehensive future judgment — “against all,” “every soul,” “all their works.”[New] Medium. يبكّت — دينونة reused consistently from v.6; يبكّت (to convict/rebuke) is standard NT vocabulary.
hamartōloi asebeis
sinful, ungodly ones
doubled emphatic description
ungodly sinners
Climactic double-barreled indictment closing the roll call of judgment.[Baseline term reused for “sinners”: الخطية root; New for “ungodly”: الفجّار] خطاة فجّار — خطاة shares its root with baseline الخطية (al-khaṭīyah, High); reuse consistently.

Jude 1:16

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
gongystai, mempsimoiroi
grumblers, malcontents
chronic complainers dissatisfied with their lot
grumblers, malcontents
Echoes Israel’s wilderness grumbling (cf. v.5’s Exodus type) — a character trait, not merely an isolated act.[New] Low.
thaumazontes prosōpa ōpheleias charin
showing favoritism/flattery for the sake of advantage
currying favor with influential people for personal gain
flattering people for advantage, showing favoritism for profit
Exposes the false teachers’ underlying motive: self-advancement, not truth or shepherding.[New] Low-Medium. يحابون الوجوه لأجل المنفعة — standard idiom (“respecting persons”), low collision risk.

Jude 1:17–18

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
tōn apostolōn
of the apostles
the authorized eyewitness founders/teachers of the church
the apostles
The false teachers’ rise was itself predicted apostolic teaching — appeal to a settled, authoritative body of prior teaching (echoes v.3’s “delivered” faith).[Baseline] الرسول → الرسل (plural) — High. Reuse exactly per baseline “apostle” note; distinguish the NT apostolic office from the Islamic prophetic office and its finality claim.
empaiktai
scoffers, mockers
those who deride and mock, especially religious truth/eschatological expectation
scoffers, mockers
A specific eschatological-marker term (paralleled in 2 Peter 3:3) signaling the “last time.”[New] Low. المستهزئون — standard, low-risk vocabulary.
ep’ eschatou tou chronou
in the last time
the final period before Christ’s return
in the last times, in the last days
Places the false-teacher crisis within an eschatological framework already anticipated by apostolic teaching.[New] Medium. في الزمان الأخير — standard eschatological vocabulary, generally compatible with shared last-days expectation across both traditions, though the content of what is expected differs sharply (see “resurrection_of_christ” and “salvation” baseline notes).

Jude 1:19

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
hoi apodiorizontes
the ones who cause divisions/separate off
those who create factions, draw lines to separate a group
those who cause divisions, the ones who separate
The false teachers create schism within the church — ironic contrast with the unified “common salvation” (v.3) and the call to build one another up (v.20).[New] Medium. المفرّقون / المسبِّبون للانقسامات — rare Greek word; render for clarity of sense (division-causing) rather than a literal calque.
psychikoi
soulish, natural (from ψυχή, “soul/life”)
governed by natural human life/instinct rather than the Spirit
worldly, unspiritual, natural
Contrasts with Spirit-indwelt believers (v.20); a category native to Pauline anthropology (cf. 1 Cor 2:14) now applied to the false teachers.[New] Medium. نفسانيون — from نفس (soul/self); needs a brief explanatory gloss distinguishing this from “carnal/sinful” in a merely moral sense — it specifically denotes the absence of the (Holy) Spirit’s indwelling life.
pneuma mē echontes
not having the Spirit
lacking the (Holy) Spirit’s indwelling presence
devoid of the Spirit, without the Spirit
A stark marker distinguishing genuine believers (who pray “in the Holy Spirit,” v.20) from the false teachers, who — despite claiming spiritual authority via “dreams” (v.8) — actually lack the Spirit altogether.[Baseline term underlying: الروح القدس] HIGH. لا روح لهم / ليس فيهم الروح — although πνεῦμα here lacks the adjective ἅγιον (“holy”), context (contrasted with v.20’s explicit ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ) requires this be understood as the same Holy Spirit. Must not be softened to a generic “spirit/vitality” reading, nor allowed to suggest these are unregenerate humans lacking a human spirit (an anthropological, not pneumatological, claim) — the point is Trinitarian and soteriological.

Jude 1:20–21

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
epoikodomountes heautous
building yourselves up
constructing, edifying, strengthening
building yourselves up, edifying yourselves
The positive pastoral counter-instruction to the false teachers’ destructive infiltration.[New] Low. يبنون أنفسهم — ties to baseline doctrine “mutual_edification” (Low risk); reuse compatible vocabulary.
tē hagiōtatē hymōn pistei
your most holy faith
the superlative form of ἅγιος (“holy”), a rare NT construction, applied to “the faith” (cf. v.3’s fixed apostolic deposit)
your most holy faith
Combines baseline “holy” and “faith” into a single superlative phrase — the deposit of doctrine defended in v.3 is now the ground for communal edification.[Baseline terms combined] الإيمان الأقدس — الإيمان (High, reuse) + superlative of مقدس (Medium, reuse). Flag the unusual grammatical superlative for translators, since Arabic superlative constructions (أقدس) must be checked for naturalness in formal register.
en pneumati hagiō proseuchomenoi
praying in the Holy Spirit
Spirit-empowered, Spirit-directed prayer
praying in the Holy Spirit
Direct contrast with v.19’s Spirit-less false teachers.[Baseline] مصلّين في الروح القدس — الروح القدس (Critical, reuse exactly).
heautous en agapē theou tērēsate
keep yourselves in the love of God
active, ongoing human responsibility to remain within the sphere of God’s covenantal love
keep yourselves in God’s love
The imperative counterpart to God’s own “keeping” (vv.1, 24) — Jude holds human responsibility and divine preservation together without contradiction, a key nuance for the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.”[New — key structural term] HIGH. احفظوا أنفسكم في محبة الله — يحفظ (same root tracked from v.1, v.6, v.13, v.24) + محبة الله (new term, “love,” Medium — see glossary). Teaching notes must explicitly address the human-responsibility/divine-preservation tension: believers are commanded to “keep” themselves even though ultimately it is God who “keeps” them (v.24) — this is a Reformed-compatible both/and, not a contradiction, and should not be resolved by collapsing into either pure human effort or pure passivity.
prosdechomenoi to eleos … eis zōēn aiōnion
waiting for the mercy … unto eternal life
eager, confident anticipation of a future, certain gift
waiting for the mercy … unto eternal life
Present assurance combined with future-oriented hope: mercy already secured through Christ, consummated in eternal life.[New] HIGH (both terms). رحمة (mercy) — see glossary; note the risk that الرحمة alone, detached from “our Lord Jesus Christ” (already present in the verse), could read as a generic divine attribute rather than mercy secured through Christ’s specific mediatorial work. الحياة الأبدية (eternal life) — High risk: must be distinguished from Jannah attained through a favorable deeds-balance; here eternal life is the outcome of being “kept” in God’s love and Christ’s mercy, a settled inheritance, not a probable future reward.

Jude 1:22–23

(Textual note: v.22’s verb has a well-known manuscript variant, either ἐλεᾶτε “have mercy on” or ἐλέγχετε “correct/reprove”; the analysis below follows the “have mercy” reading, consistent with the curriculum doctrine “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering,” and flags the variant explicitly for translator awareness.)

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
diakrinomenous
those who are doubting/wavering
in a dispute with oneself; uncertain, hesitating between positions
those who doubt, the wavering, the disputing
Distinguishes a third category of people (beyond the confirmed false teachers) — the vulnerable, uncertain members of the community who need compassionate rescue, not condemnation. Central to the doctrine “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering.”[New] Medium. المرتابون / المتشككون — must be clearly distinguished in teaching notes from the ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly false teachers) of the rest of the letter: this group is treated with mercy, not judgment, because their condition is uncertainty, not settled rebellion.
eleate
have mercy on
show compassion, extend mercy
have mercy on, show compassion to
The church’s mercy toward the wavering mirrors and flows from God’s own mercy (v.21).[New] High. ارحموا — from الرحمة (mercy, new baseline-extension term); see glossary.
sōzete ek pyros harpazontes
save, snatching out of the fire
urgent, forceful rescue from imminent danger
save them, snatching them out of the fire
Echoes Amos 4:11/Zechariah 3:2 rescue imagery; vivid urgency for reclaiming those drifting toward the false teachers’ judgment (cf. v.7’s “eternal fire” type).[Baseline term underlying: σωτηρία root] Critical + New imagery. خلّصوهم، مختلسين إياهم من النار — خلّصوا shares its root with باseline الخلاص (al-khalāṣ, Critical); the rescue-from-fire imagery reinforces (rather than dilutes) the doctrine of salvation as an urgent, effective, once-for-all deliverance rather than a passive hope.
eleate en phobō
have mercy with fear
compassion tempered by caution/reverent care not to be contaminated
show mercy with fear/caution
Balances compassion with discernment — mercy toward the wavering does not mean uncritical embrace of their error.[New] Medium. ارحموا بخوف/بحذر — standard vocabulary; خوف here carries the sense of reverent carefulness, not terror.
ton apo tēs sarkos espilōmenon chitōna
the garment stained/polluted by the flesh
a garment symbolically defiled by contact with moral corruption
the garment stained by the flesh, the polluted garment
Purity imagery closing the section: even careful compassion must not become complacent about moral contamination.[New] Medium. الثوب المدنّس من الجسد — caution: “polluted garment” imagery risks being read primarily through the lens of ritual impurity categories (e.g., najāsa in Islamic fiqh) rather than the text’s moral/spiritual corruption sense; clarify in context that this is figurative language for sin’s contaminating influence, not a ritual-purity instruction.

Part 2: Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Jude consists of a single chapter (25 verses). Verses 3–23 (the body of the letter) receive full verse-by-verse treatment in Part 1 above and are not repeated here. This section completes full-book coverage by treating the salutation (1:1–2) and the doxology (1:24–25), the material outside the core passage.

Jude 1:1–2 (Salutation) — New Material Beyond the Core Passage

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
Ioudas … doulos
Jude … a slave/servant
δοῦλος = an owned slave, not a hired/voluntary servant
Jude, a servant/slave
The author’s self-identification frames the entire letter’s authority as derivative — he writes as Christ’s owned possession, not an independent voice.[New] Medium. عبد — established Van Dyck convention for δοῦλος (cf. Romans 1:1’s بولس عبد). عبد resonates positively with the common Islamic self-designation “‘abd Allāh” (slave/servant of God), making this a workable bridge term, provided the full sense of owned (not merely employed) is retained.
adelphos … Iakōbou
brother of James
identifies Jude as the brother of James (traditionally, the Lord’s half-brother and leader of the Jerusalem church)
brother of James
Establishes Jude’s authoritative connection to the earliest apostolic leadership circle without claiming apostolic office for himself.[New] Low.
tois en theō patri ēgapēmenois
to those loved in God the Father
the recipients’ identity is grounded in being loved by God the Father
to those who are loved in God the Father
Believers’ fundamental identity: beloved by the Father — the relational ground for the whole letter’s appeal.[Baseline] الآب (al-Āb) — Critical, reuse exactly per baseline “father” note (paired risk with Son of God).
Iēsou Christō tetērēmenois
kept/preserved by/for Jesus Christ
the first occurrence of Jude’s structural keyword τηρέω — believers are described as already, presently kept
kept for Jesus Christ, preserved in Jesus Christ
Opens the letter’s “kept” motif that will run through vv.6, 13, 21, and climax in v.24 — establishing from the very first verse that the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless” frames the whole letter, not merely its closing doxology.[New — structural keyword, first occurrence] HIGH. This is the anchor occurrence; ensure translators are instructed (per note under v.13) to track this root across the entire letter.
klētois
called ones
those summoned by God’s own sovereign initiative
the called
Believers as objects of God’s own summons — direction of address matters (God calling humanity, not humanity’s da’wah-style invitation of others).[Baseline] المدعوون (al-mad’uwwūn) — High, reuse exactly per baseline “called” note.
eleos hymin kai eirēnē kai agapē plēthyntheiē
mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you
an epistolary greeting-wish, expanded beyond the usual “grace and peace” to a triad including “love”
mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you
Jude’s greeting formula anticipates the letter’s later themes: mercy (v.21, 22-23), and love (v.21).[New: ἔλεος, ἀγάπη; Baseline: εἰρήνη] رحمة وسلام ومحبة تكثر لكم — الرحمة (new, High — see glossary), السلام (baseline, Medium, reuse), المحبة (new, Medium — see glossary).

Jude 1:3–23 (Core Passage) — Full Treatment in Part 1

All load-bearing terms in this span are treated verse-by-verse above: No new terms remain untreated in this span.

Jude 1:24–25 (Doxology) — New Material Beyond the Core Passage

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningArabic Rendering & Risk
tō dynamenō phylaxai
to him who is able to guard/keep
φυλάσσω, a near-synonym of τηρέω, emphasizing active protective guarding
to him who is able to keep you
Closes the letter’s “kept” motif with a doxological climax: it is ultimately God’s ability, not human effort alone, that secures believers — the theological resolution of the v.21 tension (human “keep yourselves” alongside divine “able to keep you”).[New — near-synonym of the structural keyword] HIGH. القادر أن يحفظكم — render with the same root (ح-ف-ظ) tracked from v.1, v.6, v.13, v.21 wherever contextually natural, so this doxology reads as the deliberate resolution of the letter’s central “kept/keep” theme, per the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.”
aptaistous
without stumbling
free from falling/failure
without stumbling, from falling
Describes present preservation from moral/spiritual failure.[New] Medium.
stēsai katenōpion tēs doxēs autou amōmous
to present [you] blameless before his glory
a future, certain presentation in the divine presence, free of any charge/blemish
to present you blameless before his glory
Positional, gifted blamelessness — not self-achieved sinless perfection — presented before God’s own glory. Anchors the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.”[Baseline term reused: δόξα; New: ἄμωμος] يقيمكم بلا عيب أمام مجده — المجد (al-majd, baseline, High, reuse exactly); بلا عيب (blameless, new, Medium) — must be taught as a gifted, forensic-adjacent status parallel to baseline “imputed_righteousness” (البر المحسوب, Critical) rather than a moral achievement earned through a favorable deeds-balance.
en agalliasei
with great joy/exultation
ecstatic, triumphant joy
with great joy, with exultation
The emotional register of final presentation before God — celebratory, not anxious.[New] Low.
monō theō sōtēri hēmōn
to the only God, our Savior
exclusive monotheistic ascription combined with the salvation-title “Savior”
to the only God our Savior
A strongly monotheistic doxological opening (“only God”) — a genuine point of resonance with tawḥīd — immediately followed by “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” making the mediatorial exclusivity of Christ inseparable from that same monotheism.[New — combines with baseline θεός, κύριος] CRITICAL. لله مخلّصنا الوحيد — الله (baseline, Critical, reuse) + المخلّص (new term, “Savior,” Critical — see glossary). The doctrinal risk is not the monotheism (a genuine bridge) but ensuring the immediately following “through Jesus Christ our Lord” is never detached from it, since detaching them would produce a statement a Muslim reader could affirm without any Christological content — the opposite of the verse’s intent.
doxa megalosynē kratos kai exousia
glory, majesty, dominion, and authority
a four-fold doxological ascription of supreme divine attributes
glory, majesty, power, and authority
Comprehensive ascription of God’s supreme, exclusive attributes through Christ — the letter’s climactic worship response to the preceding warnings.[Baseline term reused: δόξα; New: μεγαλωσύνη, κράτος, ἐξουσία] المجد (baseline, reuse) + العظمة، القدرة، السلطان (new terms, Low-Medium each) — standard, broadly compatible doxological vocabulary; low independent collision risk, but ensure all four terms are consistently rendered whenever this doxology (or a parallel one) recurs elsewhere in the curriculum.
pro pantos tou aiōnos kai nyn kai eis pantas tous aiōnas
before all time/eternity, and now, and unto all the ages
comprehensive past, present, and future eternality
before all time, now, and forevermore
Ascribes eternal existence to God (and, through “through Jesus Christ,” implicitly to the ground of Christ’s mediatorial glory) spanning all of time.[New] Medium. قبل كل الأزمنة والآن وإلى كل الأزمنة/الدهور — standard eternity vocabulary; low-medium risk, generally compatible with shared belief in God’s eternity, though the implicit extension of this eternity-framing to Christ’s mediatorial role (via “through Jesus Christ our Lord” immediately preceding) should not be lost in translation.

Full-book coverage confirmation: All 25 verses of Jude (1:1–25) have now received term-level treatment — vv.1–2 and vv.24–25 above, and vv.3–23 in Part 1. No verse or chapter has been silently omitted.
