Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 1 Timothy (English → Dogri)
Curriculum: 1 Timothy 1–6
Core passage: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons)
Method: Every load-bearing term is analyzed for original Koine Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English translation variants, contextual theological meaning in 1 Timothy, and the Dogri rendering risk. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly and marked “(baseline reuse).” New terms are proposed following the baseline’s established method: prefer transparent descriptive compounds over single loaded Sanskrit/Hindi words when the single word carries a live collision with Duggar Hindu devotional vocabulary (Raghunath Mandir Rama-avatar devotion, Bahu Fort/Vaishno Devi Shakta goddess-power devotion, the Vaishno Devi mannat vow-boon economy, Dogra Rajput lineage-honor/izzat culture, and North Indian widow-stigma norms).
PART A — CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE: 1 Timothy 3:1-13
3:1 — “The saying is trustworthy: whoever aspires to the office of overseer desires a noble task.”
-
πιστός ὁ λόγος — pistos ho logos
- Literal: “faithful/trustworthy [is] the word/saying”
- Semantic range: reliable, dependable, worthy of belief; used as a fixed formula introducing five key statements in the Pastoral Epistles (1:15; 3:1; 4:9; Titus 3:8; 2 Tim 2:11)
- English variants: “This is a trustworthy saying” / “faithful is the saying” / “here is a trustworthy statement”
- Contextual theological meaning: marks the following statement as authoritative, settled church teaching, not personal opinion
- Dogri rendering: भरोसे जोगी गल्ल (bharose jogi gall, “a saying worthy of trust”) — Risk: Medium. Built from भरोसा (baseline reuse, “faith/trust”); must stay consistent across all five occurrences in the letter for pedagogical recognizability.
-
ἐπισκοπή / ἐπίσκοπος — episkopē / episkopos
- Literal: “oversight” / “overseer, one who watches over”
- Semantic range: supervisory office; in secular Greek, a civic inspector or guardian; in NT usage becomes a technical church office term, near-synonymous with πρεσβύτερος (elder, see 5:17) viewed from the angle of function (oversight) rather than seniority
- English variants: “bishop” (KJV), “overseer” (ESV/NIV), “superintendent”
- Contextual theological meaning: names a recognized, examined, qualification-bound office of church leadership, not a self-appointed or hereditary role
- Dogri rendering: निगरान (nigaran, “overseer/supervisor” — Persian-Urdu-derived, in common regional administrative use) — Risk: Critical. Must NEVER be rendered with a Hindu priestly title such as पुजारी (pujari, temple priest) or पंडित (pandit), given the Duggar region’s living temple-priesthood tradition at Raghunath Mandir and Bahu Fort; those titles carry ritual-mediation and often caste-linked associations foreign to this office. Always qualify with “कलीसिया दा निगरान” (overseer of the church) on first use per document.
-
ἐπιθυμεῖ — epithymei
- Literal: “desires, sets his heart upon”
- Semantic range: a strong wanting; the same verb root is used elsewhere (including negatively, of illicit desire/lust); here used positively of a godly aspiration
- English variants: “aspires to,” “desires,” “seeks”
- Contextual theological meaning: a legitimate, examined desire for a task of service, not ambition for status
- Dogri rendering: चाह करना (chah karna, “to desire/aspire”) — Risk: Low. Context (paired with “noble task,” not personal gain) prevents confusion with the money-love/gain-seeking vice cluster flagged later in the letter (6:5, 6:9-10).
-
καλοῦ ἔργου — kalou ergou
- Literal: “of a good/noble work”
- Semantic range: morally excellent, fitting, honorable task or work
- English variants: “noble task,” “good work,” “honorable office”
- Contextual theological meaning: church leadership is framed as service and labor, not honor-rank or privilege
- Dogri rendering: नीक कम्म (nik kamm, “a good/noble task”) — Risk: Low.
3:2 — “Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.”
-
ἀνεπίλημπτον — anepilēmpton
- Literal: “not to be laid hold of, unable to be grasped [for accusation]”
- Semantic range: blameless, irreproachable, having no valid point of accusation
- English variants: “above reproach,” “blameless,” “irreproachable”
- Contextual theological meaning: observable, public integrity of life as a precondition for leadership, verified by the community, not self-declared
- Dogri rendering: जिस उप्पर कोई दोष नेईं लाया जा सकदा (jis uppar koi dosh nahin laya ja sakda, “one on whom no fault can be laid”) — Risk: High. Must be kept distinct from ritual purity (शुद्ध, flagged in baseline under “holy”) — this is verified moral/relational integrity, not preparatory ritual cleanliness before temple darshan.
-
μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα — mias gynaikos andra
- Literal: “a one-woman man” / “husband of one wife”
- Semantic range: debated among interpreters as (a) monogamous (married to only one wife, not more), (b) faithful to one’s wife, or (c) not remarried after divorce/widowhood; in this context, at minimum, excludes polygamy and marital unfaithfulness
- English variants: “husband of one wife,” “faithful to his wife,” “a one-woman man”
- Contextual theological meaning: marital fidelity as a visible qualification for oversight of God’s household
- Dogri rendering: इक्क तीविं दा घरवाला (ikk teevin da gharvala, “husband of one woman”) — Risk: High. Dogra Rajput royal and elite history included polygamous marriage; this qualification must be taught as an explicit, non-negotiable New Testament standard of marital fidelity, not a culturally optional ideal.
-
νηφάλιον — nēphalion
- Literal: “sober, temperate” (originally of abstaining from wine)
- Semantic range: clear-headed, watchful, not given to excess (extends metaphorically to mental/spiritual alertness)
- English variants: “sober-minded,” “temperate,” “clear-headed”
- Dogri rendering: होश च रौह्ने वाला (hosh ch rauhne vala, “one who remains in [full] senses”) — Risk: Low-Medium.
-
σώφρονα — sōphrona
- Literal: “of sound mind, self-controlled”
- Semantic range: prudent, sensible, exercising self-mastery in judgment and desire
- English variants: “self-controlled,” “sensible,” “prudent”
- Dogri rendering: आपे उप्पर काबू रखने वाला (aape uppar kaabu rakhne vala, “one who keeps control over himself”) — Risk: Medium.
-
κόσμιον — kosmion
- Literal: “orderly, well-arranged”
- Semantic range: respectable, decorous conduct and appearance; behavior fitting good order
- English variants: “respectable,” “orderly,” “of good behavior”
- Dogri rendering: गंभीर ते शरीफ (gambhir te sharif, “dignified and decent”) — Risk: Medium. Deliberately avoids इज्जतदार (izzat-holder) so this virtue is not collapsed into the Dogra Rajput honor/lineage-rank system (izzat); this is character, not clan standing.
-
φιλόξενον — philoxenon
- Literal: “loving strangers” (φίλος + ξένος)
- Semantic range: hospitable, welcoming to outsiders/travelers
- English variants: “hospitable,” “given to hospitality”
- Dogri rendering: पराह्याँ दी सेवा करने वाला (parahyan di seva karne vala, “one who serves strangers/guests”) — Risk: Low.
-
διδακτικόν — didaktikon
- Literal: “skilled/apt at teaching”
- Semantic range: capable of instructing others clearly in sound doctrine
- English variants: “able to teach,” “apt to teach”
- Dogri rendering: सिखाने जोगा (sikhane joga, “fit/able to teach”) — Risk: Medium. Must be framed as competence in transmitting apostolic, Scripture-bound teaching, not the personal-charisma guru-disciple transmission model prominent in regional devotional culture.
3:3 — “Not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.”
-
πάροινον — paroinon
- Literal: “beside/given to wine”
- Semantic range: addicted to wine, a drunkard
- Dogri rendering: शराबी नेईं (sharabi nahin, “not a drunkard”) — Risk: Low.
-
πλήκτην — plēktēn
- Literal: “a striker, one who hits”
- Semantic range: violent, physically aggressive
- Dogri rendering: मारकुट्ट करने वाला नेईं (markutt karne vala nahin, “not one who beats/strikes”) — Risk: Low.
-
ἐπιεικῆ — epieikē
- Literal: “yielding, reasonable, considerate”
- Semantic range: gentle, gracious under pressure, not rigidly insistent on rights
- Dogri rendering: नरम-दिल (naram-dil, “soft/gentle-hearted”) — Risk: Low.
-
ἄμαχον — amachon
- Literal: “not a fighter” (α- + μάχη, “battle”)
- Semantic range: peaceable, not contentious or quarrelsome
- Dogri rendering: झगड़ालू नेईं (jhagdalu nahin, “not quarrelsome”) — Risk: Low.
-
ἀφιλάργυρον — aphilargyron
- Literal: “not a lover of silver/money” (α- + φίλος + ἄργυρος)
- Semantic range: free from greed, not motivated by financial gain
- English variants: “not a lover of money,” “not greedy,” “free from the love of money”
- Contextual theological meaning: anticipates the letter’s climactic warning that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (6:10)
- Dogri rendering: पैसे दा लालची नेईं (paise da lalchi nahin, “not greedy for money”) — Risk: Medium-High. Must be taught as a critique of personal greed, not of the region’s established religious-giving economy (दान); leaders must be shown to be free from financial self-interest specifically, distinct from any critique of giving itself.
3:4-5 — “He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive with all dignity; for if he does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?”
-
τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον — tou idiou oikou kalōs proistamenon
- Literal: “standing before/managing his own house well”
- Semantic range: leading, governing, providing responsible oversight of a household
- Dogri rendering: अपने घराने दा नीक तरीके कन्नै प्रबंध करना (apne gharane da nik tarike kannai prabandh karna, “to manage one’s own household well”) — Risk: Medium.
-
τέκνα ἐν ὑποταγῇ — tekna en hypotagē
- Literal: “children in submission”
- Semantic range: children who are obedient, orderly, under proper authority
- Dogri rendering: बच्चे अधीन रौंह्दे होन (bachche adheen raunhde hon, “the children remain submissive”) — Risk: Medium.
-
σεμνότητος — semnotētos
- Literal: “of dignity/gravity”
- Semantic range: seriousness, respectfulness of manner
- Dogri rendering: गंभीरता कन्नै (gambhirta kannai, “with dignity/seriousness”) — Risk: Low.
-
ἐκκλησίας θεοῦ — ekklēsias theou
- Literal: “assembly/church of God”
- Semantic range: the gathered, covenant community of believers, God’s own possession
- Dogri rendering: परमेश्वर दी कलीसिया (Parmeshwar di kalisiya) — कलीसिया and परमेश्वर are baseline reuses (exact). Risk: Critical. Never मंदर (temple) — the household-management analogy in this verse must not be read as “managing a temple’s ritual affairs” but as pastoral care of God’s covenant family.
-
ἐπιμελήσεται — epimelēsetai
- Literal: “will care for, take charge of”
- Semantic range: attentive, responsible care
- Dogri rendering: सम्भाल करना (sambhal karna, “to take care of”) — Risk: Low.
3:6 — “He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.”
-
νεόφυτον — neophyton
- Literal: “newly planted”
- Semantic range: a new convert, recently come to faith
- Dogri rendering: नमां भरोसा करने वाला (namma bharosa karne vala, “one who has newly come to faith”) — Risk: Medium. Built on भरोसा (baseline reuse).
-
τυφωθείς — typhōtheis (from τυφόω)
- Literal: “having been enveloped in smoke/mist”
- Semantic range: metaphorically, made conceited, puffed up, clouded in judgment by pride
- Dogri rendering: हऊमे च फुल्ल जाना (haume ch phull jaana, “to become swollen/puffed with pride”) — Risk: Medium.
-
κρίμα τοῦ διαβόλου — krima tou diabolou
- Literal: “judgment/condemnation of the devil”
- Semantic range: (a) the same judgment/condemnation that fell on the devil (for pride), or (b) a judgment brought about by the devil; both readings warn against pride leading to spiritual downfall
- Dogri rendering: शैतान दी सज़ा (shaitan di saza, “the devil’s judgment/punishment”) — Risk: High. शैतान (shaitan) is proposed as the standard Dogri term for the personal cosmic adversary of Scripture; it must be taught as distinct from the region’s generic folk-spirit category (भूत-परेत, ghosts/local spirits), which are impersonal, capricious local beings, not the singular fallen angelic accuser of biblical theology.
3:7 — “He must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.”
-
μαρτυρίαν καλὴν… τῶν ἔξωθεν — martyrian kalēn… tōn exōthen
- Literal: “a good testimony… from those outside”
- Semantic range: a favorable public reputation among non-believers
- Dogri rendering: बाहरले लोकां च नीक गवाही (bahrle lokan ch nik gavahi, “a good testimony among outside people”) — Risk: Medium.
-
ὄνειδος — oneidos
- Literal: “reproach, disgrace”
- Dogri rendering: बदनामी (badnami, “disgrace/ill-repute”) — Risk: Low.
-
παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου — pagida tou diabolou
- Literal: “trap/snare of the devil”
- Semantic range: a deliberate spiritual entrapment leading to downfall
- Dogri rendering: शैतान दा जाळ (shaitan da jaal, “the devil’s net/trap”) — Risk: High. Reuses शैतान (see 3:6); consistent rendering required across the letter.
3:8 — “Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.”
-
διακόνους — diakonous
- Literal: “servants, ministers, table-attendants”
- Semantic range: from a term for menial table-service, becomes in the NT a recognized, examined church office of practical/ministry service alongside the overseer/elder office
- English variants: “deacons,” “ministers,” “servants [of the church]”
- Contextual theological meaning: a second qualification-bound office, distinct in function from oversight/teaching but equally requiring tested character
- Dogri rendering: सेवादार (sevadar, “one devoted to service”) — Risk: High. सेवादार is preferred over पुजारी (temple priest, rejected — ritual-caste associations) and over सेवक alone (which carries strong Hindu devotional connotation of a devotee’s service to a deity or guru). सेवादार carries a broadly positive, non-deity-specific “committed servant” sense in regional Punjabi-influenced usage and must be explicitly taught here as a recognized church office, not informal volunteering.
-
σεμνούς — semnous
- Literal: “dignified, worthy of respect” (same root as 3:4’s σεμνότητος)
- Dogri rendering: गंभीर (gambhir, “dignified”) — Risk: Low. Consistent with 3:4.
-
δίλογους — dilogous
- Literal: “double-worded, saying one thing to one person and another to another”
- Semantic range: insincere, two-faced in speech
- Dogri rendering: दो जबानां वाला नेईं (do jabanan vala nahin, “not one with two tongues/two ways of speaking”) — Risk: Low.
-
οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας — oinō pollō prosechontas
- Literal: “giving attention/devoted to much wine”
- Dogri rendering: बहुत शराब पीने वाला नेईं (bahut sharab peene vala nahin) — Risk: Low.
-
αἰσχροκερδεῖς — aischrokerdeis
- Literal: “shamefully greedy for gain” (αἰσχρός, “shameful” + κέρδος, “gain”)
- Semantic range: greedy for dishonest or shameful profit, specifically in a position of financial trust (church funds/gifts)
- Dogri rendering: बे-ईमानी कन्नै फायदा चाहने वाला नेईं (be-imani kannai fayda chahne vala nahin, “not one who seeks dishonest gain”) — Risk: Medium-High. Same underlying concern as ἀφιλάργυρος (3:3) but here specifically about handling church resources; must be distinguished from critique of legitimate almsgiving/offerings (दान).
3:9 — “They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.”
-
τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως — to mystērion tēs pisteōs
- Literal: “the mystery of the faith”
- Semantic range: μυστήριον in Pauline usage is a truth once hidden but now openly revealed and proclaimed by God (contrast with a secret reserved for religious initiates)
- English variants: “the mystery of the faith,” “the deep truths of the faith,” “the revealed truth of the faith”
- Contextual theological meaning: the content of apostolic gospel truth, entrusted to leaders to guard and proclaim openly
- Dogri rendering: भरोसे दा भेद (bharose da bhed, “the mystery/secret of the faith”) — Risk: Critical. भेद (mystery/hidden thing) has significant collision potential with esoteric guru-transmitted secret knowledge traditions (tantric and yogic “rahasya” concepts, secret mantra transmission) present in regional religious culture. Every occurrence of this phrase MUST be accompanied by explicit teaching that this “mystery” is now openly revealed and proclaimed to all — the opposite of an esoteric secret withheld for a spiritual elite.
-
ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει — en kathara syneidēsei
- Literal: “in a clean/pure conscience”
- Semantic range: an inner moral faculty that accuses or approves; here, one undefiled by hypocrisy or hidden sin
- Dogri rendering: साफ जमीर कन्नै (saaf jamir kannai, “with a clear conscience”) — Risk: High. जमीर (jamir, a widely used Persian-Urdu-origin word for “conscience” across North Indian speech) is preferred over अंतरात्मा (“inner soul”), which risks resonance with the Hindu philosophical concept of Ātman, the eternal inner Self. Conscience here is a moral faculty that can be clean or defiled, not an eternal divine spark within.
3:10 — “Let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove blameless.”
-
δοκιμαζέσθωσαν — dokimazesthōsan
- Literal: “let them be tested/examined” (like refining metal)
- Semantic range: scrutinized, proven through observation over time
- Dogri rendering: परखे जाना (parkhe jaana, “to be tested/examined”) — Risk: Medium.
-
ἀνέγκλητοι — anegklētoi
- Literal: “not able to be accused/called to account”
- Semantic range: synonym cluster with ἀνεπίλημπτος (3:2); blameless, without valid accusation
- Dogri rendering: निर्दोष पाए जान (nirdosh pae jaan, “found blameless”) — Risk: Medium.
3:11 — “Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.”
-
γυναῖκας — gynaikas
- Literal: “women” or “wives” (the same word covers both; grammatically ambiguous here)
- Semantic range: interpreters divide between (a) deacons’ wives, or (b) women serving in a parallel deacon-like ministry role
- Contextual theological meaning: this ambiguity should be preserved rather than resolved by translation choice; the Dogri rendering must not force a decision the Greek itself does not settle
- Dogri rendering: तीविंआं (teevian, “women/wives”) — Risk: High. Flag for native-speaker AND theologian review: whichever gender-marked construction Dogri grammar requires may inadvertently resolve the ambiguity the source text leaves open; translator notes must record which reading was assumed.
-
σεμνάς — semnas
- (Same root as 3:4, 3:8) — Dogri: गंभीर — Risk: Low.
-
μὴ διαβόλους — mē diabolous
- Literal: “not devils/slanderers” — the adjective διάβολος (“slanderer, accuser”) shares its root with ὁ διάβολος, “the devil” (3:6-7), a wordplay lost in translation
- Semantic range: here used of malicious gossip/slander among people, not of the cosmic Devil
- Dogri rendering: चुगली करने वाली नेईं (chugli karne vali nahin, “not a gossiper/slanderer”) — Risk: Medium. [TRANSLATOR NOTE: the Greek wordplay linking “slanderer” (3:11) to “the devil” (3:6-7) is not recoverable in Dogri; this is expected and acceptable, but should be noted for any teaching that draws attention to word-repetition in the Greek text.]
-
νηφαλίους — nēphalious
- (Same root as 3:2) — Dogri: होश च रौह्ने वाली — Risk: Low.
-
πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν — pistas en pasin
- Literal: “faithful/trustworthy in all things”
- Dogri rendering: हर गल्ल च भरोसेमंद (har gall ch bharosemand, “trustworthy in every matter”) — built on भरोसा (baseline reuse) — Risk: Low.
3:12 — “Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.”
- Reuses μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες (see 3:2) and τέκνων καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι (see 3:4). No new terms. Risk profile identical to 3:2 and 3:4 (High and Medium respectively).
3:13 — “For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves, and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”
-
καλῶς διακονήσαντες — kalōs diakonēsantes
- Literal: “having served well” (verb form of διάκονος, 3:8)
- Dogri rendering: नीक तरीके कन्नै सेवा करने वाले (nik tarike kannai seva karne vale) — Risk: Low.
-
βαθμὸν καλόν — bathmon kalon
- Literal: “a good step/rank/degree”
- Semantic range: a standing, level of recognized honor within the community earned through faithful service
- English variants: “good standing,” “high standing,” “good rank”
- Dogri rendering: नीक दर्जा (nik darja, “a good standing/rank”) — Risk: High. This “standing” MUST be taught as earned through observed, tested Christian service — the opposite principle from the birth-ascribed caste/varna rank (jāti) and Dogra Rajput lineage-honor (izzat) systems prevalent regionally, where standing is inherited, not earned through service.
-
πολλὴν παρρησίαν — pollēn parrēsian
- Literal: “much boldness/freedom of speech”
- Semantic range: confident, unashamed openness, originally a term for a citizen’s free speech in a public assembly
- English variants: “great confidence,” “boldness,” “assurance”
- Dogri rendering: बड़ा हौसला (bada hausla, “great courage/confidence”) — built on हौसला (baseline reuse root from “exhort” — हौसला देना) — Risk: Medium.
-
ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ — en pistei tē en Christō Iēsou
- Literal: “in the faith that is in Christ Jesus”
- Dogri rendering: मसीह यीशु च भरोसा (Masih Yishu ch bharosa) — मसीह, यीशु, and भरोसा are baseline reuses (exact). Risk: Critical (per baseline faith/messiah/lord/jesus entries). Christ Jesus is the specified, named object of faith — never generalized devotion transferable to another figure.
PART B — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY
Chapter 1 — Sound Doctrine, Paul’s Testimony of Grace
-
παραγγελία — parangelia
- Literal: “an order passed along, a charge”
- Semantic range: an authoritative command/instruction, often military in origin
- English variants: “charge,” “command,” “instruction”
- Contextual theological meaning: Timothy’s ministry is grounded in a formal apostolic charge (1:5, 1:18), not personal preference
- Dogri rendering: हुकम (hukam, “command/order”) — Risk: Low-Medium.
-
μῦθοι καὶ γενεαλογίαι ἀπέραντοι — mythoi kai genealogiai aperantoi
- Literal: “myths and endless genealogies”
- Semantic range: fanciful, speculative narratives and lineage-claims used to distract from sound teaching
- Dogri rendering: गप्प-कहाणियां ते बे-अंत वंशावली (gapp-kahaniyan te be-ant vanshavali, “idle tales and endless genealogies”) — Risk: Medium-High. वंशावली (lineage/genealogy record) resonates directly with Dogra Rajput lineage-consciousness (izzat, legitimate descent claims); this passage’s warning against genealogical speculation must be taught carefully so it critiques doctrinal distraction, not the cultural value of family history itself. गप्प-कहाणियां (idle/fanciful tales) must likewise be distinguished from any implied critique of the region’s own sacred-story tradition (Puranic narratives, Baba Jitto legend) — the text is warning about invented teaching-distractions within the church, not making a general claim about all non-biblical story-telling.
-
ματαιολογία — mataiologia
- Literal: “empty/vain talk”
- Dogri rendering: बेकार गल्लबात (bekar gallbat, “useless talk”) — Risk: Low.
-
νόμος — nomos (law is good if used lawfully, teachers of the law)
- Baseline reuse (exact): व्यवस्था (vyavastha). Risk: Medium per baseline. Never धरम (Dogra Rajput lineage-duty association).
-
ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία / ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖν — hygiainousa didaskalia / heterodidaskalein
- Literal: “healthy/sound teaching” vs. “to teach differently/other doctrine”
- Semantic range: didaskalia = the body of apostolic teaching; ὑγιαίνω, literally “to be healthy,” is used metaphorically for doctrine that produces spiritual health, contrasted with teaching that is deviant from the apostolic norm
- English variants: “sound doctrine”/“sound teaching” vs. “different doctrine”/“false teaching”/“strange doctrines”
- Contextual theological meaning: the letter’s central organizing contrast and the anchor for the curriculum doctrine “Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching”
- Dogri rendering: खरी सिखलाई (khari sikhlai, “true/sound teaching”) for ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία, and गलत सिखलाई (galat sikhlai, “false/wrong teaching”) for ἑτεροδιδασκαλία — Risk: High. खरी (“genuine/true”) deliberately mirrors the baseline’s खरी खबर (gospel) so learners recognize the family of “genuine/true” vocabulary already established for the gospel; this pairing must be reused identically at every occurrence (1:3, 1:10, 4:1, 4:6, 6:1, 6:3) and must not be confused with dharmic teaching authority or guru-lineage doctrinal transmission.
-
τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ μακαρίου θεοῦ — the glorious gospel of the blessed God
- Composite phrase built entirely from baseline-reuse terms: gospel = खरी खबर, glory = महिमा, God = परमेश्वर. Risk: Critical (per baseline gospel/glory/god entries). No new vocabulary; correct assembly and word order in Dogri require native-speaker review.
-
ἔλεος — eleos
- Literal: “mercy, compassion toward one who is suffering or guilty”
- Semantic range: distinct in nuance from grace (χάρις): mercy emphasizes compassion shown toward the wretched/undeserving; grace emphasizes favor given apart from merit. The two overlap but are not identical.
- English variants: “mercy,” “compassion”
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul, “the foremost of sinners,” received mercy before he received grace for apostolic service (1:13, 1:16) — the pattern applied to any convert
- Dogri rendering: दया (daya, “mercy/compassion”) — Risk: Medium. [TRANSLATOR NOTE: दया also appears embedded inside the baseline’s compound rendering of “grace” — बिना कमाई दित्ती दया (“mercy/favor given without earning”). Teaching materials must explicitly clarify that “mercy” (दया, compassion toward the guilty) and “grace” (the fuller compound, unmerited favor establishing new standing) are related but distinct, not interchangeable synonyms.]
-
μακροθυμία — makrothymia
- Literal: “long-suffering, great patience”
- Dogri rendering: बड़ा सबर (bada sabar, “great patience”) — Risk: Low.
-
ζωὴ αἰώνιος — zōē aiōnios
- Literal: “life eternal/age-long”
- Semantic range: the unending, resurrection-quality life given by God, not merely a long duration but a new quality of life belonging to the age to come
- Dogri rendering: सदा दी जिंदगी (sada di zindagi, “eternal/everlasting life”) — Risk: High. Must be distinguished from both (a) the endless cycle of rebirth (साथ रेह्ने वाला संसार) rejected already in baseline’s resurrection entry, and (b) the Hindu concept of moksha as merger/dissolution into ultimate reality; eternal life in Romans-and-1 Timothy theology is conscious, relational, personal life with God, never impersonal absorption.
-
ἀφθάρτῳ, ἀοράτῳ, μόνῳ θεῷ — aphthartō, aoratō, monō theō (“to the incorruptible, invisible, only God”)
- ἄφθαρτος (aphthartos): literal “not corrupted/decaying,” i.e., imperishable — Dogri: अविनाशी (avinashi, “imperishable/indestructible”) — Risk: Medium. अविनाशी is also a common epithet applied to Vishnu/Shiva in regional Hindu devotional usage; must be explicitly taught here as describing the one true God’s unique, underived eternal nature, not borrowed from or shared with any avatar-deity.
- ἀόρατος (aoratos): literal “unseen” — Dogri: अणदिट्ठा (andiththa, “unseen/invisible”) — Risk: Low.
- μόνος θεός: “only/sole God” — reuse परमेश्वर (baseline) + इक्को-इक्क (ikko-ikk, “the one and only”) — Risk: Critical per baseline “god” entry (exclusive monotheism against the region’s populated pantheon of actively worshipped deities).
-
βλασφημέω — blasphēmeō (and Σατανᾶς, Satanas)
- Literal: “to speak evil/injuriously against”
- Dogri rendering: निन्दा करना (ninda karna, “to blaspheme/revile”) — Risk: Medium.
- Σατανᾶς: Dogri: शैतान (shaitan) — Risk: High, consistent with the “devil” entries above (3:6-7); the transliterated Hebrew-derived proper name “Satan” and the Greek-descriptive “devil” (διάβολος) refer to the same being and should be rendered with the same Dogri term throughout the letter for consistency.
Chapter 2 — Public Worship, Prayer, and the One Mediator
-
δεήσεις, προσευχάς, ἐντεύξεις, εὐχαριστίας — deēseis, proseuchas, enteuxeis, eucharistias
- Four near-synonymous prayer terms: “petitions/requests,” “prayers” (general), “intercessions” (pleading on behalf of others), “thanksgivings”
- Dogri rendering: बिनती (binti, petitions) / प्रार्थना (prarthana, prayers) / बिचाल्ले होइयै बिनती (baseline reuse, intercession) / धन्नवाद (baseline reuse, thanksgiving) — Risk: Medium overall; must be distinguished from mediated petitionary practice at regional shrines (direct address to God in Christ’s name, without a human or angelic intermediary go-between other than Christ himself — see mediator, below).
-
βασιλεῖς καὶ πάντων τῶν ἐν ὑπεροχῇ ὄντων — kings and all who are in high positions
- Dogri rendering: राजें ते उच्च ओहदे वाले लोक (rajen te uchch ohde vale lok, “kings and people of high rank”) — Risk: Low. “राजा” (raja, generic king) is used, not महाराजा (the specific historic Dogra dynastic title reserved as forbidden for “Lord” per baseline); no collision here since this verse is about praying for civil rulers generally, not naming Christ.
-
εὐσέβεια καὶ σεμνότης — eusebeia kai semnotēs (“godliness and dignity”)
- εὐσέβεια (eusebeia): Literal “good reverence/worship” — the letter’s dominant recurring virtue term (2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3, 6:5-6, 6:11)
- Semantic range: reverent, God-fearing piety expressed in conduct, the wholehearted orientation of life toward God
- English variants: “godliness,” “piety,” “devotion”
- Contextual theological meaning: anchors the curriculum doctrine “Godliness and Contentment”; in 6:5-6 it is explicitly warned against being treated as a means of financial gain
- Dogri rendering: परमेश्वर दा डर-आदर (Parmeshwar da dar-aadar, “fear-and-honor/reverence of God”) — Risk: Critical. Must NEVER be rendered भक्ति (bhakti) — भक्ति is the single most theologically loaded word available in Dogri/Hindi for devotional piety, being the specific technical term for devotion to Rama, Krishna, Devi, and other deities across the entire North Indian bhakti tradition (directly relevant given Raghunath Mandir’s Rama-bhakti and the Vaishno Devi/Bahu Fort goddess-bhakti traditions). A descriptive compound avoiding भक्ति entirely is required, following the same method the baseline used for “incarnation” (avoiding अवतार) and “grace” (avoiding पुण्य). Every occurrence in the letter must use this same compound.
- σεμνότης (semnotēs): (same root as 3:4, 3:8, 3:11) — Dogri: गंभीरता (gambhirta, “dignity”) — Risk: Low.
-
ἤρεμον καὶ ἥσυχον βίον — a quiet and peaceable life
- Dogri rendering: शान्त ते सुखी जीवन (shant te sukhi jeevan) — builds on शान्ति (baseline reuse, peace) — Risk: Low-Medium.
-
θεοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν — God our Savior; πάντας ἀνθρώπους θέλει σωθῆναι — desires all people to be saved
- Reuses परमेश्वर and उद्धार (baseline reuse, salvation). Risk: Critical, per baseline salvation entry. The universal scope (“all people,” “desires”) must be preserved without qualification — see also the curriculum doctrine “Universal Scope of the Gospel” already flagged Critical in the Romans registry; this is the same principle applied to 1 Timothy.
-
ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας — epignōsin alētheias (“knowledge of the truth”)
- Literal: “full/exact knowledge of truth”
- Dogri rendering: सच्चाई दी पछान (sachchai di pachaan, “recognition/knowledge of the truth”) — Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from the “knowledge falsely called” (γνῶσις ψευδώνυμος, 6:20) that the letter explicitly condemns; this is true, saving knowledge of revealed gospel truth, not esoteric gnosis.
-
εἷς θεός, εἷς… μεσίτης — heis theos, heis… mesitēs (“one God, one mediator”)
- μεσίτης (mesitēs): Literal “one who stands in the middle, a go-between”
- Semantic range: a legally and relationally unique intermediary who reconciles two separated parties
- English variants: “mediator,” “go-between,” “intermediary”
- Contextual theological meaning: the anchor term for the curriculum doctrine “Christ as the One Mediator” — Christ alone, exclusively, stands between God and humanity
- Dogri rendering: बिच्च खड़ा होने आह्ला (bichch khada hone aahla, “the one who stands in between”) — Risk: Critical. This is one of the highest-stakes terms in the entire curriculum for the Duggar context: the region’s devotional landscape is dense with recognized mediating figures — the goddess at Vaishno Devi approached through vows, Kali/Bawe Wali Mata at Bahu Fort, and the local folk-martyr intercessor Baba Jitto (venerated alongside his daughter Bua Kauri at the Aghar Jitto shrine). This verse’s “ONE mediator” must be taught with explicit, repeated emphasis on exclusivity — Christ is not one mediator added to this existing network but the sole mediator who displaces the entire mediating-figure framework for reconciliation with God. Every occurrence requires theologian review.
-
ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων — antilytron hyper pantōn (“a ransom for all”)
- Literal: “a ransom-price given in exchange, on behalf of all”
- Semantic range: the price paid to secure release/freedom, drawn from slave-manumission and captive-redemption imagery
- English variants: “ransom,” “redemption price”
- Dogri rendering: छुटकारे दी कीमत (chhutkare di keemat, “the price of deliverance/release”) — Risk: Critical. मुक्ति (moksha/liberation-from-rebirth) is explicitly FORBIDDEN per baseline; छुटकारा (deliverance/release, distinct root from मुक्ति) is used instead, consistent with the baseline’s method of avoiding the rebirth-cycle vocabulary entirely. Must also be distinguished from the Vaishno Devi mannat economy: this ransom is a once-for-all price Christ himself paid, not a payment offered by the worshipper to secure a boon.
-
κῆρυξ — kēryx (“herald/preacher”) and διδάσκαλος ἐθνῶν — didaskalos ethnōn (“teacher of the nations/Gentiles”)
- Dogri rendering: प्रचारक (pracharak, “preacher/herald”) — built on प्रचार (baseline reuse root, “mission” = प्रचार दा कम्म) — Risk: Low-Medium. For “Gentiles/nations” in this specific mission-context verse, use राष्ट्र (rashtra, “nations”) per baseline’s explicit instruction (“Use राष्ट्र in mission contexts”) rather than गैर-यहूदी.
-
κόσμιος adornment, αἰδώς, σωφροσύνη — modesty and self-control (women’s dress, 2:9-10)
- Semantic range: αἰδώς = a sense of modesty/shame that restrains inappropriate display; σωφροσύνη = self-mastery, sound judgment (cf. σώφρων, 3:2)
- Dogri rendering: सादगी ते संजम (sadgi te sanjam, “simplicity and self-restraint”) — Risk: Medium-High. This passage must be taught with care in the Dogra Rajput cultural context, where women’s modesty is already heavily regulated by an existing honor/shame (izzat/sharam) code tied to family and lineage standing. The text’s call to modesty must be framed as flowing from inward godly character (εὐσέβεια) freely expressed, not reinforced as compliance with the existing honor-code’s external control of women’s bodies and reputation for the sake of family izzat — a subtly different motivation that this passage does not teach.
-
ἡσυχία, ὑποταγή — hēsychia, hypotagē (“quietness, submission,” 2:11-12) and αὐθεντεῖν — authentein (“to exercise authority/dominate,” 2:12)
- Semantic range: ἡσυχία = calm, non-disruptive demeanor (not absolute silence, cf. 2:2’s use of the same root for a “peaceable” life); αὐθεντεῖν is a rare verb in the NT with disputed scholarly semantic range, ranging from “to have authority over” to “to domineer/usurp authority over” — the choice materially affects the passage’s application
- Dogri rendering: चुप्पी ते अधीनता (chuppi te adheenta, “quietness and submission”) for hēsychia/hypotagē; हकम चलाना (hakam chalana, “to exercise/impose authority”) for authentein — Risk: High. Flag explicitly for human theologian review: this is one of the curriculum’s most contested passages; the Dogri rendering of αὐθεντεῖν in particular must not prematurely resolve the scholarly debate about its semantic range, and any teaching notes accompanying the translation must state the range of interpretive options rather than silently adopting only one.
-
ἀπατηθεῖσα, παράβασις — deceived, transgression (2:14)
- Reuses पाप (baseline reuse, sin)-adjacent vocabulary; Dogri: भरमाई गेई (bharmai gei, “was deceived”) and उलंघना (ulanghna, “transgression/violation”) — Risk: Medium.
-
σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας — sōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias (“she will be saved through childbearing”)
- Semantic range: one of the most exegetically difficult verses in the NT; possible readings include (a) safe delivery through physical childbirth, (b) spiritual preservation/vindication through faithful motherhood, (c) a reference to the birth of the Messiah (“the childbearing,” with the definite article)
- Dogri rendering: बाल जनमने राहें उद्धार (baal janamne rahen uddhar, “salvation/deliverance through bearing a child”) — reuses उद्धार (baseline reuse, salvation). Risk: Critical. This verse sits directly on top of one of the most concrete cultural collisions available in this Language Package: the Vaishno Devi shrine’s mannat economy is heavily used by women seeking children (fertility vows), and any hint that this verse teaches salvation-through-successful-childbirth-as-a-transactional-outcome would collapse directly into the boon-granting logic the baseline already forbids for “grace” and “salvation.” This verse MUST be accompanied by extensive translator/theologian notes clarifying that Paul is not teaching a childbirth-based means of personal salvation (which would contradict the letter’s own soteriology, e.g. 1:15-16, 2:4), and any Dogri phrasing must avoid implying a vow-fulfillment or boon-granted-through-motherhood reading.
Chapter 3 (verses 14-16) — Household of God, Pillar of Truth, Mystery of Godliness
(Verses 1-13 treated fully in Part A above.)
-
οἴκῳ θεοῦ — oikō theou (“household of God”)
- Dogri rendering: परमेश्वर दा परिवार (Parmeshwar da parivar, “God’s family/household”) — Risk: High. Builds directly on the household-management qualifications of 3:1-13; the church is God’s own family, continuous with (not merely analogous to) the domestic household imagery already established.
-
ἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντος — ekklēsia theou zōntos (“church of the living God”)
- Reuses कलीसिया and परमेश्वर (baseline reuse) + जिंदा (zinda, “living” — same root as baseline’s resurrection phrase मुर्दघरा चा जिंदा होना). Risk: Critical — the living God, in contrast to the region’s temple deities honored through ritual offerings and darshan, is personally, presently active, not an image to be viewed or a shrine to be visited.
-
στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας — stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias (“pillar and buttress/foundation of truth”)
- Literal: στῦλος = “a pillar, column”; ἑδραίωμα = “a support, foundation, that which makes stable”
- Semantic range: architectural metaphor for the church’s role in upholding and displaying revealed truth publicly and stably
- Dogri rendering: सच्चाई दा खंभा ते आधार (sachchai da khambha te aadhar, “the pillar and foundation of truth”) — Risk: High. Anchors the curriculum doctrine “The Church as Pillar of Truth.” [TRANSLATOR NOTE: pillared architecture is itself a highly visible feature of major regional temple complexes, including Raghunath Mandir; the metaphor of a supporting pillar is universal and not itself the risk, but teaching materials should make clear the church is being compared to a structural support for revealed truth, not architecturally identified with, or substituting for, a temple building — see baseline’s church/मंदर distinction.]
-
τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον — to tēs eusebeias mystērion (“the mystery of godliness”) and the Christological hymn fragment (3:16b)
- Composite of भेद (mystery, see 3:9) + परमेश्वर दा डर-आदर (godliness, see 2:2) → Dogri: परमेश्वर दे डर-आदर दा भेद — Risk: Critical, per both component terms above.
- ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί — ephanerōthē en sarki (“was manifested in the flesh”): Dogri: मानखे दे रूप च जाहर होया (mankhe de roop ch jahar hoya, “was made manifest/revealed in human form”) — Risk: Critical. Directly continuous with the baseline’s incarnation entry (मानखे दा रूप लैना); NEVER अवतार. This clause is the letter’s single clearest incarnation statement and requires theologian review at every occurrence.
- ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι — edikaiōthē en pneumati (“was vindicated/justified in/by the Spirit”): Dogri: आत्मा राहें सच्च ठहराया गेआ (aatma rahen sachch thehraya gaya, “was shown/declared to be true through the Spirit”) — Risk: High. [TRANSLATOR NOTE: this is Christ himself being vindicated, a different referent from the baseline’s justification entry (धर्मी ठहराए जाना, of believers being declared righteous); do not conflate the two — Christ’s vindication is not the sinner’s justification, though the same root verb (δικαιόω) is used in both.]
- ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις — ōphthē angelois (“was seen by angels”): Dogri: स्वर्गदूतां आसेआ दिट्ठा गेआ (svargdootan aasea ditthaa gaya). New term स्वर्गदूत (svargdoot, “heavenly messenger/angel”) — Risk: Low.
- ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν — ekērychthē en ethnesin (“was proclaimed among the nations”): reuses राष्ट्र (nations, mission context) + प्रचार root — Risk: Medium.
- ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ — episteuthē en kosmō (“was believed on in the world”): reuses भरोसा (baseline reuse) — Risk: Medium (per baseline faith entry).
- ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ — anelēmphthē en doxē (“was taken up in glory”): reuses महिमा (baseline reuse, glory) + उप्पर लेई गेआ (uppar lei gaya, “taken up”) — Risk: High. Refers to Christ’s ascension, a distinct doctrinal moment from his resurrection (baseline: मुर्दघरा चा जिंदा होना); the two must not be merged into a single undifferentiated event in Dogri teaching materials.
Chapter 4 — Apostasy Warning, Training in Godliness, Timothy’s Example
-
ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως — apostēsontai tines tēs pisteōs (“some will depart from the faith”)
- Semantic range: a definitive, willful turning away from previously held apostolic faith
- Dogri rendering: भरोसे थमां भटकना (bharose thaman bhatakna, “to wander/stray away from the faith”) — builds on भरोसा (baseline reuse) — Risk: High. Anchors an “apostasy” sub-theme within the curriculum’s “Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching” doctrine.
-
πνεύμασι πλάνοις καὶ διδασκαλίαις δαιμονίων — pneumasi planois kai didaskaliais daimoniōn (“deceitful spirits and teachings of demons”)
- δαιμόνιον (daimonion): Dogri rendering: दुष्ट आत्मा (dushht aatma, “wicked/evil spirit”) — Risk: Medium-High. Deliberately distinguished from the region’s folk category of भूत-परेत (capricious local ghosts/spirits, part of Duggar folk belief distinct from organized temple religion); biblical demons are personal, malicious spiritual beings in organized opposition to God’s truth, a different category from folk-spirit lore, and this distinction should be made explicit in teaching notes.
- “Deceitful/misleading spirits”: भरमाने वाली आत्मां (bharmane vali aatman) — Risk: Medium.
-
κωλυόντων γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων — forbidding marriage, requiring abstinence from foods
- Dogri rendering: ब्याह करने थमां मनां करना (biyah karne thaman manaa karna, “forbidding marriage”) and खाने-पीने थमां परहेज़ कराना (khane-peene thaman parhez karana, “requiring abstinence from food”) — Risk: Medium-High. This passage condemns a specific false asceticism, but the region has a strong existing positive valuation of celibate renunciation (sannyasa) and vow-fasting (vrat) within Hindu devotional practice; teaching notes must make clear Paul is condemning a specific false teaching that treats marriage and food as inherently defiling — not making a general statement against fasting or singleness as spiritual disciplines, both of which the New Testament elsewhere commends when rightly motivated.
-
γύμναζε σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν — gymnaze seauton pros eusebeian (“train yourself for godliness”)
- Reuses परमेश्वर दा डर-आदर (godliness, see 2:2) + new athletic-training metaphor: कवाईद करना (kavaid karna, “to train/drill,” a common regional loanword for physical training) — Risk: Medium (the godliness term itself remains Critical; the training metaphor itself is Low).
-
πιστὸς ὁ λόγος — the faithful saying (4:9): reuse from 3:1 — Risk: Medium, consistency required.
-
σωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων, μάλιστα πιστῶν — Savior of all people, especially of believers (4:10): reuses उद्धार (baseline reuse) — Risk: Critical, universality-plus-particularity language must be preserved without softening.
-
τύπος — typos (“example/pattern,” 4:12): Dogri rendering: नमूना (namoona, “example/model”) — Risk: Low.
-
πνεύμασι… ἀνάγνωσις, παράκλησις, διδασκαλία — public reading, exhortation, teaching (4:13): reuses पवित्तर शास्तर (holy scripture, drawn from baseline doctrine-name “Inspiration of Scripture”) and हौसला देना (baseline reuse, exhort) in its specific liturgical/public sense — Risk: Medium. [TRANSLATOR NOTE: this occurrence of “exhort” is the public, congregational reading-and-exhortation sense, distinct from the personal-encouragement sense elsewhere; both use the same Dogri term हौसला देना per baseline, context must disambiguate.]
-
χάρισμα, προφητεία, ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτερίου — gift, prophecy, laying on of hands by the council of elders (4:14): reuses आत्मिक दान (baseline reuse, spiritual gift) and भविष्यवाणी (baseline reuse, prophecy). New: हत्थ रखना (hatth rakhna, “laying on of hands”) — Risk: Medium, and अगुवां दी सभा (aguvan di sabha, “council/assembly of elders”) — Risk: Medium, building on अगुवा (elder, defined ch. 5 below). [TRANSLATOR NOTE: laying on of hands for ordination/commissioning must be distinguished from region-familiar ritual blessing gestures (touching feet for elder’s blessing, temple priest’s hand-gesture blessings); this is a specific commissioning act tied to recognized office, not a general devotional blessing gesture.]
Chapter 5 — Elders, Widows, and the Household of Faith
-
πρεσβύτερος — presbyteros
- Literal: “an older man/elder”
- Semantic range: used in 5:1 of an older man generally (respectfully addressed, not rebuked harshly), but in 5:17,19 of the recognized teaching-and-ruling church office (near-synonymous with ἐπίσκοπος, 3:1-2, viewed from the angle of seniority/dignity rather than oversight function)
- Dogri rendering: for the office sense — अगुवा (aguva, “leader/guide”) — Risk: High. [TRANSLATOR NOTE: the same Greek word covers both a generic “older man” (5:1, rendered बड्डा/badda, “elder/older person,” Low risk) and the specific church office (5:17,19, rendered अगुवा). अगुवा is deliberately chosen over “पंच” or “बड्डा” alone to avoid collapsing the church office into the secular village panchayat elder-council model, a distinct social institution in the region with its own customary (non-ecclesial) authority.]
-
τιμὴν… χήρας τὰς ὄντως χήρας — honor widows who are truly widows
- χήρα (chēra): Dogri rendering: विधवा (vidhwa, “widow”) — Risk: High. The term itself is standard and unavoidable, but the doctrine of “Care for Widows” in this chapter — including permission for younger widows to remarry (5:14) — must be taught with explicit cultural awareness that North Indian Hindu tradition (of which Dogra culture is a part) has historically carried strong widow-stigma norms (association of widowhood with inauspiciousness, restrictions on remarriage, distinctive dress and social restriction). 1 Timothy 5’s positive, structured provision for widows and its explicit permission for younger widows to remarry stands in direct, welcome contrast to this stigma and should be taught as such, not softened to accommodate it.
- ὄντως χήρα: “truly/actually a widow” (i.e., one genuinely without family support) — Dogri: सच्ची विधवा (sacchi vidhwa) — Risk: Medium.
-
τοῖς ἰδίοις εὐσεβεῖν, ἀμοιβὰς ἀποδιδόναι τοῖς προγόνοις — to show godliness to one’s own family, to repay parents (5:4)
- Dogri rendering: अपने घराने दा फर्ज़ निबाहना (apne gharane da farz nibahna, “to fulfill one’s duty toward one’s own family”) — Risk: Medium-High. Deliberately uses फर्ज़ (farz, “duty/obligation,” Persian-Urdu loanword) rather than धरम, which the baseline has already explicitly flagged and rejected for “law” because of its strong Dogra Rajput lineage-duty/izzat association; this same caution applies here to family-care obligation language.
-
καταλέγω — katalegō (“to be enrolled,” 5:9): Dogri rendering: सूची च नांऽ लिखना (soochi ch naan likhna, “to have one’s name written in a list”) — Risk: Low.
-
ἄπιστος — apistos (“unbeliever,” 5:8): Dogri rendering: भरोसा नेईं करने वाला (bharosa nahin karne vala, “one who does not trust/believe”) — built on भरोसा (baseline reuse) — Risk: Medium.
-
οἱ καλῶς προεστῶτες πρεσβύτεροι, διπλῆς τιμῆς — elders who rule/lead well, double honor (5:17): Dogri rendering: दोहरा आदर (dohra aadar, “double honor/respect”) — Risk: Medium-High. आदर (respect) is deliberately chosen over इज्जत (izzat) so this honor-for-service principle is not absorbed into the Dogra Rajput clan-honor system, in which honor is a fixed possession tied to lineage rather than a recognition given in response to observed service.
-
ὁ ἐργάτης τοῦ μισθοῦ αὐτοῦ — the laborer worthy of his wages (5:18): Dogri rendering: मजदूर आपणी मजूरी दा हक्कदार ऐ (majdoor aapni majoori da hakkdar ai, “the laborer is entitled to his wages”) — Risk: Low.
-
πρόσκλισις — prosklisis (“partiality,” 5:21): Dogri rendering: पक्षपात (pakshpaat, “partiality/favoritism”) — Risk: Medium-High. Given the church’s leadership-discipline instructions here, this must be taught as excluding caste, clan, and lineage-based favoritism specifically — an application the text itself does not spell out but which this cultural context makes especially relevant.
-
ἐπίθεσις χειρῶν… ταχέως — laying on of hands… hastily (5:22): reuses हत्थ रखना (see ch. 4) — Risk: Medium.
-
ἀγνὸς σεαυτὸν φύλαγε — keep yourself pure (5:22): Dogri rendering: आपने आपने गी पवित्तर रख्खो (aapne aapne gi pavittar rakkho) — builds on पवित्तर (baseline reuse, holy) — Risk: Medium, must remain distinct from ritual purity (शुद्ध), per baseline’s holy entry.
-
Wine for the stomach (5:23): Dogri rendering: पेट आस्तै दारू — Risk: Low — a practical health instruction with no significant doctrinal risk; noted explicitly for completeness.
Chapter 6 — Contentment, the Danger of Love of Money, Guarding the Deposit
-
δοῦλοι ὑπὸ ζυγόν — douloi hypo zygon (“bondservants/slaves under the yoke,” 6:1-2)
- Literal: δοῦλος = “slave/bondservant”; ζυγός = “yoke”
- Semantic range: addresses conduct within an existing first-century social institution of slavery, not an endorsement of the institution itself
- Dogri rendering: जुए थल्ले सेवक (jue thalle sevak, “servants under the yoke”) — Risk: High. Requires explicit contextual framing: the Duggar region carries its own historical memory of caste-linked bonded labor and the begar (forced-labor) system under Dogra princely-state rule; this passage must be taught as addressing conduct within the ancient world’s social structure, not as endorsing bonded servitude, and must not be conflated with, or read as biblical sanction for, regional caste-based bonded-labor memory.
-
νοσῶν περὶ ζητήσεις — nosōn peri zētēseis (“having a morbid craving/being sick with disputes,” 6:4): Dogri rendering: बहस-मुबाहसे दी बीमारी (bahas-mubahase di bimari, “a sickness/disease for disputes”) — Risk: Low-Medium.
-
νομίζοντων πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν — imagining that godliness is a means of gain (6:5)
- Dogri rendering: परमेश्वर दे डर-आदर गी फायदे दा जरिया समझना (Parmeshwar de dar-aadar gi fayde da jariya samajhna, “regarding godliness as a means of profit”) — Risk: Critical. This is one of the letter’s most direct intersections with the mannat/boon economy already flagged as Critical throughout the baseline for grace and salvation: this verse explicitly condemns exactly the transactional religion-for-profit logic the whole Language Package has been built to guard against. This should be taught as a direct, explicit tie-in to the baseline’s grace and salvation cautions, not treated as an isolated new concern.
-
εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας — eusebeia meta autarkeias (“godliness with contentment”)
- αὐτάρκεια (autarkeia): Literal “self-sufficiency, having enough”
- Semantic range: contentment rooted in trust in God’s provision, distinguished from Stoic self-sufficiency (self-generated inner independence) and from the Hindu ascetic ideal of vairagya (detachment achieved through renunciation/spiritual discipline)
- English variants: “contentment,” “sufficiency”
- Dogri rendering: संतोख (santokh, “contentment”) — Risk: Medium-High. संतोख is a well-established regional term (with resonance in both Sikh and general North Indian usage) but must be explicitly distinguished from वैराग्य (vairagya, ascetic detachment achieved through one’s own spiritual discipline); biblical contentment here flows from trust in God’s provision (a relational, received posture), not from self-achieved detachment from desire (a disciplined, self-generated state).
-
φιλαργυρία — philargyria (“love of money,” 6:10)
- Dogri rendering: पैसे दा लालच (paise da lalach, “greed for money”) — Risk: Medium. Directly continuous with 3:3’s ἀφιλάργυρον and 3:8’s αἰσχροκερδεῖς; consistency required across all three occurrences.
-
δικαιοσύνη, εὐσέβεια, πίστις, ἀγάπη, ὑπομονή, πραϋπαθία — righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness (6:11)
- Reuses धरमीपन (baseline reuse, righteousness — Critical), godliness (see 2:2), भरोसा (baseline reuse, faith).
- ὑπομονή (hypomonē): Dogri rendering: धीरज (dheeraj, “patience/steadfast endurance”) — Risk: Low-Medium.
- πραϋπαθία (prautēs/prautpathia): Dogri rendering: नरमी (narmi, “gentleness/meekness”) — Risk: Low.
-
τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα τῆς πίστεως — the good fight of faith (6:12): reuses भरोसा — Risk: Medium, and लड़ाई (ladai, “fight/struggle”) — Risk: Low.
-
ὁμολογία — homologia (“confession,” 6:12-13): Dogri rendering: अंगीकार (angeekar, “acknowledgment/confession”) — Risk: Medium. [TRANSLATOR NOTE: this must be rendered consistently with the “Lord confession” consistency rule already established in the baseline for Romans 10:9-10, since Christ’s own good confession before Pilate (6:13) and the believer’s confession of faith are theologically linked acts of the same word-family.]
-
ὁ μακάριος καὶ μόνος δυνάστης, βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων — the blessed and only Sovereign, King of kings and Lord of lords (6:15)
- δυνάστης (dynastēs): Literal “ruler, potentate” — Dogri rendering: इक्को-इक्क हाकम (ikko-ikk hakam, “the one and only ruler”) — Risk: High.
- βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων — King of kings: Dogri rendering: राजें दा राजा (rajen da raja, “King of kings”) — Risk: Medium, using generic राजा (raja), not the historic Dogra dynastic title महाराजा, per baseline’s caution.
- κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων — Lord of lords: reuses प्रभु (baseline reuse, Lord — Critical): प्रभुआं दा प्रभु (prabhuan da prabhu). Risk: Critical, per baseline lord/lordship_of_christ entries. This title’s supremacy claim must be rendered so it exceeds, rather than echoes, the historic Dogra royal dynastic “Maharaja” framing.
-
ἀθανασία — athanasia (“immortality,” 6:16)
- Literal: “deathlessness” (distinct Greek word from ἄφθαρτος, “incorruptible,” used in 1:17)
- Semantic range: here predicated of God alone (“who alone has immortality”) — an exclusive divine attribute, not a shared or attainable creaturely quality
- Dogri rendering: अमरता (amrata, “immortality/deathlessness”) — Risk: High. Must be explicitly distinguished from the Hindu philosophical concept of the soul’s (ātman’s) inherent, natural immortality (the self already eternally exists and merely transmigrates or is ultimately released); here, immortality belongs to God alone as his own underived nature, and any immortality creatures receive (eternal life, resurrection) is a given, derivative gift, not an innate possession of the human soul.

φῶς ἀπρόσιτον — phōs aprositon (“unapproachable light,” 6:16): Dogri rendering: नेड़े न ओने जोगी रौशनी (nede na one jogi roshni, “a light that cannot be approached”) — Risk: Medium-High. Per baseline’s caution under “glory,” must avoid any framing that evokes ceremonial temple-lighting rites (aarti) associated with darshan at Raghunath Mandir; this is God’s own unapproachable, transcendent nature, not a viewable ceremonial radiance.

ἀποθησαυρίζοντας ἑαυτοῖς θεμέλιον καλὸν εἰς τὸ μέλλον — storing up for themselves a good foundation for the future (6:19)
- Dogri rendering: औने वाले आस्तै नीक नींह जोड़ना (aune vale aaste nik neenh jodna, “laying up a good foundation for what is to come”) — Risk: High. Must be carefully framed against a merit-earning (पुण्य) misreading, consistent with the baseline’s explicit rejection of पुण्य for grace; generous good works here are the fruit of received grace, storing up genuine future blessing, never a payment that earns or secures salvation.

φύλαξον τὴν παραθήκην — phylaxon tēn parathēkēn (“guard the deposit entrusted to you,” 6:20)
- Literal: παραθήκη = “a deposit placed in trust with someone for safekeeping”
- Semantic range: the body of apostolic teaching entrusted to Timothy (and, by extension, the church) to be preserved intact and passed on faithfully
- English variants: “guard the deposit,” “guard what has been entrusted to you,” “keep that which is committed to your trust”
- Contextual theological meaning: the letter’s climactic charge, anchoring the curriculum doctrine “Guarding the Deposit of Faith”
- Dogri rendering: अमानत दी रक्षा करना (amanat di raksha karna, “to guard/protect the entrusted trust”) — Risk: Critical. अमानत (amanat, “a trust/deposit placed in one’s keeping”) is a well-established Persian-Urdu-origin loanword across North Indian languages with a strong, positive, non-ritual sense of a sacred trust that must not be betrayed. Must be distinguished from (a) a merit-earning reading (guarding one’s own spiritual attainment) and (b) any conflation with the guarding of physical ritual objects (temple offerings, prasad, relics); the “deposit” here is the body of apostolic gospel truth itself.

βεβήλους κενοφωνίας καὶ ἀντιθέσεις τῆς ψευδωνύμου γνώσεως — irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge (6:20)
- κενοφωνία (kenophōnia): Dogri rendering: बे-मतलब गल्लां (be-matlab gallan, “pointless/empty talk”) — Risk: Low-Medium.
- ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις (pseudōnymos gnōsis): Literal “falsely-named knowledge”
- Dogri rendering: झूठा गियान (jhootha gyan, “false knowledge”) — Risk: Critical. गियान (gyan/jnana) carries exceptionally deep resonance in North Indian Hindu philosophy as jnana — the path of liberating knowledge, often transmitted secretly from guru to disciple, one of the classical margas (paths) to moksha. This verse’s warning against “knowledge falsely so called” must be explicitly taught as a warning against a specific ancient false teaching (proto-Gnostic in character) claiming superior spiritual knowledge — not as a general biblical suspicion of knowledge, learning, or the concept of gyan itself, which would risk an unintended and unhelpfully broad anti-intellectual reading. Must be held in explicit contrast with “knowledge of the truth” (ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας, 2:4), which the letter commends.
