Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 2 Timothy (Koine Greek → Dogri)
Scope and Method
This document analyzes 2 Timothy in the original Koine Greek across all four chapters. The core passage, 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5, receives verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every other chapter (1, 2, and the remainder of 3 and 4) receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields.
Fields applied to every term: Original Greek word · Transliteration · Literal meaning · Semantic range · English variants (how English translations render it) · Contextual theological meaning in 2 Timothy · Dogri rendering and risk note.
Baseline reuse rule: Where a term already has a settled rendering in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, that exact Dogri rendering is reused here and marked [Baseline TM — reuse exactly]. New terms not present in the Romans package are proposed here for the first time and marked [NEW], with a risk tier assigned using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Standing cultural risk (applies throughout): Two collision zones recur across 2 Timothy far more than in Romans: (1) the popular North Indian devotional vocabulary of bhakti (devotion), seva (service), das (servant/devotee), guru-updesh (teaching), and amrit (nectar of immortality / Sikh initiation rite); and (2) the cyclical yuga cosmology (esp. Kali Yuga, the present degenerate age), which 2 Timothy 3’s “last days” vice-catalogue superficially resembles. Both are flagged at each relevant term below and must never be silently assumed compatible.
Part 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5
2 Timothy 3:14
“σὺ δὲ μένε ἐν οἷς ἔμαθες καὶ ἐπιστώθης, εἰδὼς παρὰ τίνων ἔμαθες” — “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μένε (μένω) | menō | ”remain, stay, abide” | remain in a place/state; persevere; abide | continue, remain, abide, stand firm | Timothy is charged to persevere in the apostolic teaching he received — ties directly to “Guarding Sound Doctrine” and “Perseverance under Suffering.” | टिकेआ रहणा (tikea rehna, “remain firmly fixed”) — [NEW, Medium]. Choose a verb of firm persistence, not mere passive waiting. |
| ἔμαθες (μανθάνω) | emathes | ”you learned” | to learn by instruction, study, experience | learned, been taught | Refers to Timothy’s discipleship under Paul and his family (1:5; 3:15) — ties to “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel.” | सिखेआ (sikhea, “learned”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| ἐπιστώθης (πιστόω) | epistōthēs | ”you were made certain/assured, entrusted with confidence” | to be firmly convinced; to be given confident trust; passive of a verb built on the πίστις (“faith”) root | were assured of, were convinced of, were persuaded of | Not mere information but settled, trust-grounded conviction — deliberately shares its root with faith (πίστις/भरोसा). | भरोसे कन्नै निश्चा होना (bharose kannai nishcha hona, “to become settled/certain through trust”) — [NEW, High]. Must visibly share the भरोसा root so the connection to “faith” is not lost in Dogri as it is not lost in Greek. |
2 Timothy 3:15
“καὶ ὅτι ἀπὸ βρέφους τὰ ἱερὰ γράμματα οἶδας, τὰ δυνάμενά σε σοφίσαι εἰς σωτηρίαν διὰ πίστεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βρέφους (βρέφος) | brephous | ”infant, newborn” | infancy, early childhood | infancy, childhood | Emphasizes early, lifelong exposure to Scripture through Lois and Eunice (1:5) — models “Faithful Transmission.” | बचपन थमां (bachpan thamā, “from childhood”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| ἱερὰ γράμματα | hiera grammata | ”sacred writings/letters” | holy/consecrated writings; distinct term from γραφή below, used only here in the NT | sacred writings, holy Scriptures | The Old Testament writings Timothy was raised on; parallel to and interchangeable in context with γραφή (v.16). | पवित्तर शास्तर (pavittar shastar) — [NEW, Critical]. See doctrine-registry precedent (“पवित्तर शास्तर दी प्रेरणा”). CRITICAL: शास्तर alone is the generic North Indian word for any authoritative religious/philosophical treatise (Hindu shastra literature, patronized historically by the Dogra royal court). पवित्तर (“holy,” already Critical in baseline) must always accompany it to mark out God’s unique, inspired writings from that broader Sanskrit textual tradition — never शास्तर alone. |
| σοφίσαι (σοφίζω) | sophisai | ”to make wise” | to instruct in wisdom; to make skilled/wise | make wise, instruct for wisdom | Scripture’s purpose is to make Timothy wise specifically unto salvation, not general wisdom/knowledge. | अकलमंद बनाना (aklmand banana, “to make wise/discerning”) — [NEW, Medium]. Must retain “unto salvation” qualifier so it is not heard as generic worldly wisdom (a rival category to ज्ञान, see 4:3-4 notes). |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | ”salvation” | deliverance, rescue | salvation, deliverance | Same doctrine as Romans. | उद्धार (uddhar) — [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Critical]. |
| πίστις…ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ | pistis en Christō Iēsou | ”faith in Christ Jesus” | trust, reliance | faith, belief | The saving object of faith is named explicitly: Christ Jesus, not Scripture itself. | भरोसा (bharosa) — [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, High]; object always specified as “Christ Jesus” (यीशु मसीह). |
2 Timothy 3:16
“πᾶσα γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ ὠφέλιμος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν, πρὸς ἐλεγμόν, πρὸς ἐπανόρθωσιν, πρὸς παιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πᾶσα γραφή | pasa graphē | ”all Scripture / every Scripture” | the entire body of sacred writing, or every individual passage of it | all Scripture, every Scripture | The anchor verse for “Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture.” | सारा पवित्तर शास्तर (sara pavittar shastar) — [NEW, Critical]. Same term as v.15’s ἱερὰ γράμματα; consistency across the two verses is mandatory. |
| θεόπνευστος | theopneustos | ”God-breathed” (θεός + πνέω, “breathe”) | breathed out by God; a NT coinage, occurring only here | inspired by God, God-breathed | God is the source and origin of Scripture’s content, through human writers. | परमेश्वरे दे फूक कन्नै लिखी गेई (parmeshware de phook kannai likhi gei, “written by/through the breath of God”) — [NEW, Critical]. Must not be confused with the Hindu concept of the Vedas as apauruṣeya (eternal, impersonal, authorless sound) nor with guru-transmitted revelation. This is personal, purposive divine authorship through chosen human writers, once for all — never an eternal impersonal sound-text. |
| ὠφέλιμος | ōphelimos | ”useful, beneficial, profitable” | practically advantageous | profitable, useful, beneficial | Scripture’s usefulness is thoroughly practical for the whole Christian life. | फायदेमंद (fayedemand, “beneficial”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| διδασκαλίαν (διδασκαλία) | didaskalian | ”teaching, doctrine” | the content taught; body of instruction | teaching, doctrine, instruction | Scripture’s first function: positive instruction in truth — anchors “Guarding Sound Doctrine.” | सिखलाई (sikhlai) — [NEW, High]. Prefer this Dogri-Punjabi cognate over उपदेश, which carries strong guru-updesh/spiritual-discourse resonance from regional Hindu and Sikh devotional practice. For the compound “sound doctrine” (ch.4), see खरी सिखलाई below. |
| ἐλεγμόν (ἐλεγμός) | elegmon | ”reproof, conviction of fault” | exposing/convicting of error | reproof, correction, rebuke | Scripture’s second function: exposing sin and error. | दोष दिखाना (dosh dikhana, “to show/expose fault”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| ἐπανόρθωσιν (ἐπανόρθωσις) | epanorthōsin | ”restoration, setting right again” (ἐπί + ἀνά + ὀρθόω, “straighten”) | correction that restores to proper condition | correction, restoration | Scripture’s third function: restorative correction, not mere punishment. | सुधारना (sudharna, “to set right/correct”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| παιδείαν (παιδεία) | paideian | ”training, discipline, upbringing” | the whole process of child-rearing/formation, often disciplinary | training, instruction, discipline | Scripture’s fourth function: ongoing moral formation “in righteousness.” | धरमीपन आस्तै सिखलाई (dharmipan aaste sikhlai, “training toward righteousness”) — [NEW, Medium]. A descriptive phrase is safer than the single word अनुशासन (anushasan), which carries formal dharma-shastra/legalistic-code connotations; the phrase keeps धरमीपन (baseline Critical term) visibly central. |
| δικαιοσύνῃ | dikaiosynē | ”righteousness” | right standing/right conduct | righteousness | Same doctrine as Romans 4; here the goal-state of Scripture’s training. | धरमीपन (dharmipan) — [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Critical]. |
2 Timothy 3:17
“ἵνα ἄρτιος ᾖ ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος, πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐξηρτισμένος.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄρτιος | artios | ”complete, fit, proficient” | fully suited/adequate for a task | complete, proficient, mature | States Scripture’s sufficiency — the believer needs no supplementary source of authority. | पूरा ते तैयार (poora te tiyar, “complete and ready”) — [NEW, High]. This is the key sufficiency term; must not be softened to imply Scripture is merely one helpful resource among several (e.g., alongside guru-instruction or shastra). |
| ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος | ho tou theou anthrōpos | ”the man of God” | a person set apart for God’s service/message (OT prophetic idiom) | man of God, person of God | Designates Timothy (and, by extension, every faithful minister) as one shaped entirely by God’s Word. | परमेश्वर दा मनुक्ख (Parmeshwar da mankhu) — [NEW, High]. NEVER महात्मा (“great soul,” a title for revered Hindu ascetics/reformers) or गुरु/साधु (already rejected for “saints” in baseline for the same reason); this is an ordinary believer wholly instructed by Scripture, not a spiritually elevated holy-man category. |
| ἐξηρτισμένος (ἐξαρτίζω) | exartismenos | ”fully equipped, outfitted” | thoroughly furnished/prepared | equipped, furnished, outfitted | Scripture’s end goal: full readiness for every kind of good work. | पूरी तरह तैयार कीता होया (poori tarah tiyar kita hoya) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| ἔργον ἀγαθόν | ergon agathon | ”good work” | virtuous action/deed | good work, good deed | Same category as Romans’ “good work” language; practical Christian obedience. | नेक कम्म (nek kamm, “good/righteous deed”) — [NEW, Low]. |
2 Timothy 4:1
“Διαμαρτύρομαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ, τοῦ μέλλοντος κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς, κατὰ τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ·“
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Διαμαρτύρομαι | diamartyromai | ”I solemnly charge/testify” (διά + μαρτυρέω, “witness”) | to give a solemn charge invoking a witness | I charge, I solemnly testify, I command | Anchors “The Charge to Preach the Word” — a legally/covenantally weighted commission, not a casual request. | गवाह रखियै हुकम देना (gavah rakhiyai hukam dena, “to give a command while [God is] kept as witness”) — [NEW, High]. Must never be flattened to a mere polite suggestion. |
| ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ | enōpion tou theou kai Christou Iēsou | ”before God and Christ Jesus” | in the presence/sight of | before God and Christ Jesus | God and Christ Jesus jointly witness the charge — implicit deity of Christ. | परमेश्वर ते मसीह यीशु दे सामनै (Parmeshwar te Masih Yishu de samnai) — uses [Baseline TM — reuse exactly] god/messiah/jesus terms. |
| μέλλοντος κρίνειν | mellontos krinein | ”who is about to judge” | κρίνω: to judge, discern, decide, condemn | who will judge, the coming judge | Christ’s role as final eschatological Judge — ties “Assurance of Reward” to accountability. | न्याय करने आळा (nyay karne aala, “the one who is about to judge”) — [NEW, Critical]. |
| ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς | zōntas kai nekrous | ”the living and the dead” | all humanity, both those alive and those deceased at Christ’s return | the living and the dead | Universal, final judgment scope — no exemption by lineage, honor-rank, or era. | जिंदयां ते मुर्दयां (jindeyan te murdeyan) — [NEW, Critical]. CRITICAL: this pairing risks being heard through the lens of Yama (the Hindu god of death) and Chitragupta’s karmic record-keeping and judgment of souls after death — a very salient regional mythological frame. Must be taught explicitly as Christ’s own unique, personal, once-for-all final judgment, not a parallel to Yama’s court or an impersonal karmic reckoning. |
| ἐπιφάνειαν (ἐπιφάνεια) | epiphaneian | ”appearing, manifestation” | a visible, decisive appearance | appearing, coming, manifestation | Christ’s future, visible return — distinct from his first incarnation. | परगट होना (pargat hona); “his appearing” = ओह्दा परगट होना — [NEW, High]. Must never use अवतार (already forbidden for Incarnation in the baseline) and must be clearly distinguished from the idea of a deity’s repeatable avatar-descent or temple-darshan appearance. This is Christ’s single, climactic, final return. |
| βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ | basileian autou | ”his kingdom” | God’s/Christ’s sovereign reign | his kingdom | Christ’s future reign at his appearing.
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κήρυξον (κηρύσσω) | kēryxon | ”proclaim as a herald” | to announce publicly with authority | preach, proclaim, herald | Central verb of “The Charge to Preach the Word” — authoritative public proclamation. | प्रचार कर (prachar kar) — [NEW, but built on Baseline TM root “प्रचार दा कम्म”/“प्रचार करना” from mission/evangelism doctrines, Medium-High]. Prefer the verb phrase प्रचार करना over a single-word प्रचारक/प्रचारक-वाला noun form for “herald,” since प्रचारक has acquired a specific contemporary socio-political association in North Indian usage (a formal ideological-organization office-bearer) that is best avoided here. |
| τὸν λόγον | ton logon | ”the word” | message, speech, the gospel message as a body of content | the word, the message | ”The word” = the apostolic gospel message entrusted to Timothy. | बचन (bachan); “परमेश्वर दा बचन” for “word of God” — [NEW, Medium]. Distinct from generic बात (“talk”); note shared usage of “bachan/shabad” in Sikh scripture tradition — serviceable but flagged for translator awareness, not forbidden. |
| ἐπίστηθι (ἐφίστημι) | epistēthi | ”be at hand, stand ready, be urgent” | to be ready/present; press the matter | be ready, be urgent, be persistent | Timothy must be constantly ready to proclaim, not only when convenient. | हर वेल्लै त्यार रह् (har vellai tiyar reh, “be ready at every time”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως | eukairōs akairōs | ”in season, out of season” (lit. “well-timed, ill-timed”) | at convenient and inconvenient times alike | in season and out of season | Idiom expressing constancy regardless of circumstance. | वेल्ले-बेवेल्ले, यानी हर वेळ (velle-bevelle, “at the right time and the wrong time, i.e. at every time”) — [NEW, Low, idiom]. Translate meaning plainly; do not force a literal calque if unnatural. |
| ἔλεγξον (ἐλέγχω) | elenxon | ”reprove, convict, expose” | expose wrongdoing/error with evidence | reprove, rebuke, convict | First of three ministry postures. | दोष दिखा (dosh dikha) — [NEW, Medium] (same root as v.3:16 ἐλεγμός). |
| ἐπιτίμησον (ἐπιτιμάω) | epitimēson | ”rebuke, censure sharply” | correct with authoritative force | rebuke | Second ministry posture, sharper than mere reproof. | डांट (daant, “rebuke sharply”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| παρακάλεσον (παρακαλέω) | parakaleson | ”exhort, encourage, urge” | to call alongside; comfort, urge, appeal | exhort, encourage, appeal to | Third ministry posture, restoring warmth after correction. | हौसला देना / बिनती करना — [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, context-sensitive, Low]. Here closer to “urge/exhort,” so हौसला देना with an exhorting sense is preferred. |
| μακροθυμίᾳ (μακροθυμία) | makrothymia | ”patience, longsuffering” | forbearance under provocation | patience, longsuffering, forbearance | The manner in which correction/exhortation must be carried out. | सब्र (sabr) — [NEW, Low-Medium]. Widely shared regional loanword; low collision risk, confirm register against BSI Dogri Bible. |
| διδαχῇ (διδαχή) | didachē | ”teaching, instruction” | the act/content of teaching | teaching, doctrine, instruction | Parallel to διδασκαλία (3:16); teaching accompanies correction. | सिखलाई (sikhlai) — [NEW, High], same rendering as διδασκαλία for consistency. |
2 Timothy 4:3
“ἔσται γὰρ καιρὸς ὅτε τῆς ὑγιαινούσης διδασκαλίας οὐκ ἀνέξονται, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τὰς ἰδίας ἑαυτοῖς ἐπισωρεύσουσιν διδασκάλους κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν,“
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| καιρός | kairos | ”appointed time, season” | a fitting/decisive point in time | time, season | Marks a coming period of doctrinal decline. | समां (samā, “time/season”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| ὑγιαινούσης διδασκαλίας | hygiainousēs didaskalias | ”sound/healthy teaching” (ὑγιαίνω, “be healthy,” used medically) | doctrinally healthy, whole, uncorrupted teaching | sound doctrine, sound teaching | The doctrine to be guarded against corruption — anchors “Guarding Sound Doctrine.” | खरी सिखलाई (khari sikhlai) — [NEW, High]. Deliberately parallel in construction to baseline खरी खबर (“gospel”), reusing खरी (“true/genuine”) to build a consistent family of “true/sound” terms distinct from Hindi/Sanskrit loans like सुसमाचार or उपदेश. |
| ἀνέξονται (ἀνέχομαι) | anexontai | ”they will endure/tolerate/put up with” | to bear with, tolerate | endure, tolerate, put up with | People will refuse to tolerate sound teaching — direct link to “Apostasy and False Teachers.” | सहणा नै (sehna nai, “will not tolerate/bear”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| ἐπιθυμίας τὰς ἰδίας | epithymias tas idias | ”their own desires/passions” | strong desire, often disordered | their own desires, passions, lusts | Self-directed desire replacing submission to truth. | आपनी खुशी दी चाहत (aapni khushi di chahat, “desire for their own pleasure”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| ἐπισωρεύσουσιν (ἐπισωρεύω) | episōreusousin | ”they will heap up, accumulate” | to pile up in quantity | accumulate, heap up, gather | Multiplying teachers to match appetite rather than seeking truth. | ढेर लाना (dher lana, “pile up/accumulate”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| διδασκάλους | didaskalous | ”teachers” | instructors | teachers | Contrast with the one true “sound teaching.” | सिखलाई देने वाले (sikhlai dene wale) — [NEW, Low]. |
| κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν | knēthomenoi tēn akoēn | ”having itching ears” (lit. “being scratched/tickled as to the hearing”) | craving novel, flattering content | itching ears, wanting to hear something new | Vivid idiom for craving novelty over sound truth. | नई-नित्तियां गल्लां सुनने दी लालसा (nai-nittian gallan sunne di lalsa, “a craving to hear ever-new things”) — [NEW, Medium, idiom]. Do not calque “itching” literally if it reads as nonsensical; preserve the theological point (appetite for novelty over soundness). |
2 Timothy 4:4
“καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας τὴν ἀκοὴν ἀποστρέψουσιν, ἐπὶ δὲ τοὺς μύθους ἐκτραπήσονται.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀληθείας (ἀλήθεια) | alētheias | ”truth” | that which is real/true, as opposed to error | truth | Objective apostolic truth, contrasted with myths. | सच्चाई (sachai) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| ἀποστρέψουσιν (ἀποστρέφω) | apostrepsousin | ”they will turn away” | to turn aside from, reject | turn away, turn aside | Willful rejection of truth. | मूं फेरना (moon pherna, “turn the face away”) — [NEW, Medium]. Same root reused at 2 Tim 1:15 (“all in Asia turned away from me”) — deliberate consistency across the book to mark the apostasy theme. |
| μύθους (μῦθος) | mythous | ”myths, fables, tales” | invented, unhistorical stories, often with a religious veneer | myths, fables, tall tales | Fabricated substitutes for sound apostolic teaching. | मनघड़ंत कहाणियां (mangharant kahaniyan, “made-up/fabricated stories”) — [NEW, High]. NEVER use पुराण (Puranas — a body of sacred Hindu narrative texts) or कथा (a term for sacred religious discourse/storytelling, e.g. Ramkatha, Satyanarayan katha, both widely practiced and deeply positive terms in this region). Both carry strong positive sacred-narrative connotations that would badly invert Paul’s warning. |
| ἐκτραπήσονται (ἐκτρέπομαι) | ektrapēsontai | ”they will be turned aside, will wander off” | to be diverted from the correct path | turn aside, wander away | Result of preferring myths over truth. | भटक जाणा (bhatak jana, “to wander astray”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
2 Timothy 4:5
“σὺ δὲ νῆφε ἐν πᾶσιν, κακοπάθησον, ἔργον ποίησον εὐαγγελιστοῦ, τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| νῆφε (νήφω) | nēphe | ”be sober, be watchful” | literally sobriety from drink; figuratively clear-headed self-control | be sober, be watchful, be clear-minded | Timothy must remain alert against the drift described in vv.3-4. | होश च रहणा (hosh cha rehna, “stay alert/in one’s senses”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| κακοπάθησον (κακοπαθέω) | kakopathēson | ”suffer hardship, endure evil” | to bear affliction | endure suffering, suffer hardship | Anchors “Perseverance under Suffering” within the charge itself. | दुख सह् (dukh seh, “endure suffering”) — [NEW, High]. |
| ἔργον…εὐαγγελιστοῦ | ergon euangelistou | ”the work of an evangelist” | the specific task of one who proclaims the gospel | do the work of an evangelist | Ties gospel proclamation (κήρυξον, v.2) to a concrete ministry role. | खरी खबर सुणाने वाले दा कम्म (khari khabar sunane wale da kamm, “the work of one who proclaims the good news”) — [NEW, Medium-High]. Built compositionally on the established खरी खबर (baseline “gospel”) to avoid introducing an unrelated loanword. |
| τὴν διακονίαν | tēn diakonian | ”the ministry, the service” | assigned service/office | ministry, service | Timothy’s total ministerial charge/office. | सेवा (seva) — [NEW, High]. CULTURAL COLLISION FLAG: सेवा is also the standard word for devotional temple and gurdwara service (e.g., langar seva) throughout the wider Punjab-Dogra region, often understood as merit-generating religious volunteer work. Must be explicitly taught as gospel-ministry entrusted by Christ (a delegated stewardship, cf. 1 Cor 4:1-2), not generic religious seva or merit accumulation. |
| πληροφόρησον (πληροφορέω) | plērophorēson | ”fulfill fully, carry out completely” | bring to full completion | fulfill, fully carry out, discharge fully | Timothy’s ministry must be carried out to completion, not partially. | पूरी तरह निबाहना (poori tarah nibahna, “carry out completely”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
Part 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (2 Timothy 1:1–18)
No verses in Chapter 1 overlap with the core passage; every load-bearing term below is new to this document.
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| apostle ἀπόστολος apostolos ”one sent” | commissioned, authorized envoy apostle | Paul’s own office, the source of the authority behind his charge to Timothy. | भेजेआ होया — [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Medium]. |
| promise of life ἐπαγγελία ζωῆς epangelia zōēs ”a promise of life” | pledge, announced guarantee promise | The gospel is grounded in God’s promise, not human negotiation. | वादा (vada) — [NEW, Medium]; ties to “life” (ज़िंदगी/जीवन, Low) as eternal life in Christ. |
| grace, mercy, peace χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη charis, eleos, eirēnē ”favor, compassion, peace” | unearned favor; compassion toward the needy; relational wholeness grace, mercy, peace | Standard Pauline greeting triad; mercy (ἔλεος) is distinct from grace (χάρις). | grace = बिना कमाई दित्ती दया [Baseline TM]; peace = शान्ति [Baseline TM]; mercy = दया (daya) — [NEW, Medium]. Note: दया already appears inside the baseline compound for grace; translators must not collapse “mercy” (ἔλεος) into the full grace-phrase or vice versa — keep them visibly distinct even though related. |
| clean/pure conscience καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει kathara syneidēsei ”with a clean conscience” | inner moral awareness free of guilt clear conscience, pure conscience | Paul’s own integrity of ministry, modeling faithful transmission. | जमीर (jamir, “conscience”) — [NEW, Medium]. Prefer this shared regional loanword over अंतरात्मा (“inner soul”), which carries ātman/soul-metaphysics associations from Hindu and Jain thought. |
| sincere/unhypocritical faith ἀνυπόκριτος πίστις anypokritos pistis ”unhypocritical faith” | genuine, without pretense sincere faith, genuine faith | Timothy’s own inherited, genuine trust in Christ (via Lois, Eunice). | भरोसा — [Baseline TM] + नकली नईं (nakli nain, “not fake/sincere”) qualifier — [NEW, Low]. |
| gift of God / fan into flame χάρισμα… ἀναζωπυρεῖν charisma… anazōpyrein ”gift… to rekindle/fan into flame” | Spirit-given enablement; to stir a fire back to life spiritual gift… stir up, rekindle, fan into flame | Timothy’s God-given ministry equipping must be actively stirred up, not left dormant. | आत्मिक दान — [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Medium]; रekindle = भड़काना (bhadkana, “to kindle/stir up”) — [NEW, Low-Medium]. |
| spirit of fear / power, love, self-control πνεῦμα δειλίας… δυνάμεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ σωφρονισμοῦ pneuma deilias… dynameōs kai agapēs kai sōphronismou ”spirit of cowardice… of power and love and self-mastery” | timidity vs. empowered, loving, disciplined character fear, timidity vs. power, love, self-control/sound mind | Direct antidote to ministry fear — foundational for “Perseverance under Suffering.” | fear/timidity = डर (dar) [NEW, Low]; power = सामर्थ [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, High]; love (ἀγάπη) = प्रेम (prem) — [NEW, Medium]: widely shared word, but carries strong devotional-bhakti resonance (prem bhakti toward Krishna in North Indian devotional poetry); must be taught as committed, self-giving covenantal love, not romantic/ecstatic devotional passion; self-control (σωφρονισμός) = आपे उप्पर काबू (aape uppar kabu, “control over oneself”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| ashamed ἐπαισχύνομαι epaischynomai ”to be ashamed of” | to feel shame, to disown out of embarrassment be ashamed | Timothy must not be ashamed of the gospel testimony or of Paul’s imprisonment. | शर्म करना / लजाना (sharam karna) — [NEW, High]. Directly engages Dogra Rajput honor/shame (izzat) culture flagged in the baseline; public non-shame regarding the gospel is a significant honor-cost confession, not a minor phrase. |
| testimony μαρτύριον martyrion ”witness, testimony” | formal, authoritative attestation testimony, witness | The gospel witness Timothy must not be ashamed of. | गवाही (gavahi) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| share in suffering συγκακοπαθέω synkakopatheō ”to suffer hardship together with” | joint endurance of affliction share in suffering | Ties directly to “Perseverance under Suffering,” in shared/communal form. | रल़ियै दुख सहणा (ralliyai dukh sehna) — [NEW, High], built on दुख सहणा established in the core passage (4:5). |
| purpose πρόθεσις prothesis ”purpose, plan, resolve” | prior determination, intention purpose, plan | God’s own eternal purpose, not human works, is the ground of grace given in Christ. | मनसा/इरादा (mansa/irada, “purpose/intention”) — [NEW, Medium]; ties to परमेश्वर दी चोन (Baseline TM, election) and परमेश्वर दा प्रबन्ध (Baseline TM, providence). |
| Savior σωτήρ sōtēr ”savior, deliverer” | one who saves/rescues Savior | Title for Christ, tightly bound to salvation (σωτηρία) and the appearing (ἐπιφάνεια). | उद्धारकर्ता (uddharkarta, “the one who accomplishes salvation”) — [NEW, Critical]. Built transparently on the already-established Critical term उद्धार. NEVER तारणहार (“the one who ferries [across]”), a common Vaishnava bhakti epithet for Rama/Krishna as one who ferries devotees across the ocean of rebirth (samsara) — this would silently reintroduce the very rebirth-cycle framework the baseline forbids for “salvation.” |
| abolished death / brought life and immortality to light καταργήσαντος τὸν θάνατον, φωτίσαντος δὲ ζωὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν katargēsantos ton thanaton, phōtisantos de zōēn kai aphtharsian ”having nullified death, having illuminated life and incorruption” | rendering powerless; bringing into visible light abolished death, brought life and immortality to light | Christ’s decisive victory over death, revealed through the gospel. | death abolished = मौत खतम कीती (maut khatam kiti) [NEW, Medium]; brought to light = परगट कीता (pargat kita) [NEW, Medium], reusing the परगट root from ἐπιφάνεια for consistency; life = ज़िंदगी/जीवन [NEW, Low]; immortality (ἀφθαρσία) = अमरता (amarta) — [NEW, Critical]. HIGH SALIENCE RISK: अमरता / अमृत (amrit) is the mythological nectar of immortality obtained by the gods at the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), and “Amrit” is also the specific name of the Sikh baptismal initiation rite (amrit sanskar), highly salient in the Punjab-Dogra border region. This must be taught as resurrection life that never ends, through Christ alone — never the mythological nectar, and never conflated with the Sikh initiation rite. |
| herald κῆρυξ kēryx ”herald, announcer” | one authorized to make public proclamation preacher, herald | Paul’s own office, alongside apostle and teacher. | प्रचार करने वाला (prachar karne wala, “one who proclaims”) — [NEW, Medium-High]. Avoid the single-word noun प्रचारक, which carries a specific contemporary socio-political organizational association in North India; the descriptive phrase is safer. |
| entrusted deposit / guard παραθήκη…φυλάξαι parathēkē…phylaxai ”a thing deposited/entrusted… to guard” | property placed in trust for safekeeping; to keep watch over that which was committed, deposit… guard, keep | Anchors “Guarding Sound Doctrine” and “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel” — the gospel is a trust to be kept intact, not altered. | सौंपी गेई अमानत (saumpi gei amanat, “an entrusted trust”) — [NEW, Medium]; guard = निगाह रखणा (nigah rakhna, “keep watch over”) — [NEW, High]. NOTE: अमानत is a widely shared Indic-Persian loanword also carrying Islamic ethical-legal resonance (amanah); the core meaning (something entrusted for safekeeping) is compatible and unlikely to cause syncretism, but confirm against the BSI Dogri Bible before wide deployment. |
| pattern of sound words ὑποτύπωσις ὑγιαινόντων λόγων hypotypōsis hygiainontōn logōn ”outline/pattern of healthy words” | a model or template to be followed pattern, standard, model of sound words | Timothy is to hold the apostolic teaching as a fixed template. | खरी सिखलाई दा नमूना (khari sikhlai da namuna, “pattern of sound teaching”) — [NEW, High], reusing खरी सिखलाई established in 4:3 for consistency. |
| turned away ἀπεστράφησάν apestraphēsan ”they turned away from” | abandoned, deserted turned away, deserted | ”All in Asia turned away from me” — an early instance of the apostasy theme developed fully in ch.3-4. | मूं फेरना — [NEW, Medium], same root as ἀποστρέφω in 4:4 for thematic consistency. |
| proper names (ch.1) Παῦλος, Τιμόθεος, Λωΐς, Εὐνίκη, Ὀνησίφορος, Φύγελος, Ἑρμογένης Paulos, Timotheos, Lōis, Eunikē, Onēsiphoros, Phygelos, Hermogenēs — | — Paul, Timothy, Lois, Eunice, Onesiphorus, Phygelus, Hermogenes | Personal names; Onesiphorus is commended for faithful, costly ministry to Paul in prison. | Transliterate in established regional Bible-translation forms; confirm each against the BSI Dogri Bible. [NEW, Low]. |
Chapter 2 (2 Timothy 2:1–26)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| be strengthened in grace ἐνδυναμοῦ ἐν τῇ χάριτι endynamou en tē chariti ”be empowered/strengthened in grace” | to be made strong by an outside source be strong in grace | Ministry endurance is grace-fueled, not self-generated. | बिना कमाई दित्ती दया [Baseline TM] + मजबूत हो (majboot ho, “become strong”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| entrust to faithful men παράθου πιστοῖς ἀνθρώποις parathou pistois anthrōpois ”deposit with trustworthy people” | to hand over for safekeeping to reliable persons commit, entrust | Core verse for “Faithful Transmission of the Gospel” — a chain of entrusted, faithful teaching (Paul → Timothy → faithful others → others still). | entrust = सौंपणा (saumpna, “hand over in trust”) — [NEW, High], same root family as παραθήκη (ch.1); faithful (πιστός) = भरोसे-जोग्ग (bharose-jogg, “worthy of trust”) — [NEW, High], built on भरोसा (baseline). |
| soldier, athlete, farmer (metaphors) στρατιώτης, ἀθλῶν, γεωργός stratiōtēs, athlōn, geōrgos ”soldier,” “one competing [in games],” “farmer” | three vocational images of disciplined, focused, patient labor soldier, athlete, farmer | Models of undivided devotion, rule-keeping, and patient labor for the gospel worker. | सिपाही (sipahi), खिलाड़ी (khiladi), किसान (kisan) — [NEW, Low-Medium, cultural metaphor — flag for native speaker review per standard convention, not theologian-required]. |
| remember Jesus Christ raised from the dead, seed of David μνημόνευε Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐγηγερμένον ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυίδ mnēmoneue Iēsoun Christon egēgermenon ek nekrōn, ek spermatos Dauid ”remember Jesus Christ, having been raised from the dead, from David’s seed” | — remember Jesus Christ raised from the dead, of David’s seed | The gospel content Timothy must hold onto amid suffering — direct link to resurrection and Davidic-covenant doctrine. | resurrection = मुर्दघरा चा जिंदा होना [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Critical]; seed of David = दाऊद दे वंश चा [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, High]; Jesus/Christ = यीशु/मसीह [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Critical]. |
| the word of God is not bound ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ δέδεται ho logos tou theou ou dedetai ”the word of God has not been bound/chained” | fettered, imprisoned word of God is not bound/chained | Paul’s imprisonment cannot stop the gospel’s advance — encouragement for “Perseverance under Suffering.” | बचन [NEW, Medium, as established in 4:2] + बंदी नईं (bandi nain, “not imprisoned/bound”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| I endure…for the sake of the elect πάντα ὑπομένω διὰ τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς panta hypomenō dia tous eklektous ”I endure all things for the sake of the chosen ones” | to bear up under, remain steadfast; the chosen endure…for the elect’s sake | Core “Perseverance under Suffering” verse, tied explicitly to God’s election. | endure (ὑπομένω) = सहन करना/झेलना (sehan karna/jhelna, “endure/bear”) — [NEW, High]; elect = परमेश्वर दी चोन दे लोक (Parmeshwar di chon de lok) — [Baseline TM root — reuse “election” term exactly, High]. |
| eternal glory δόξα αἰώνιος doxa aiōnios ”glory that is everlasting” | unending divine honor/radiance eternal glory | Salvation’s ultimate outcome, tying “Assurance of Reward” to glory. | महिमा [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, High] + हमेशा दी (hamesha di, “everlasting”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| trustworthy is the saying / faithful πιστὸς ὁ λόγος…ἐκεῖνος πιστὸς παραμένει pistos ho logos…ekeinos pistos paramenei ”the saying/word is trustworthy…he remains trustworthy” | dependable, reliable, worthy of trust faithful is the saying…he remains faithful | God’s own faithfulness contrasted with human faithlessness — key for “Assurance of Reward” and “Faithful Transmission.” | भरोसे-जोग्ग — [NEW, High], same root as above. |
| he cannot deny himself ἀρνήσασθαι ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται arnēsasthai heauton ou dynatai ”to deny himself he is not able” | disown, repudiate he cannot deny himself | God’s character is the unshakeable ground of assurance — contrasts sharply with the apostasy of false teachers (ch.3-4). | अपने आपे थमां मुकरना (apne aape thamā mukarna, “to go back on/deny oneself”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| rightly handling the word of truth ὀρθοτομοῦντα τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας orthotomounta ton logon tēs alētheias ”cutting straight the word of truth” | to handle correctly, without distortion (agricultural/construction metaphor) rightly dividing/handling the word of truth | Anchors “Guarding Sound Doctrine” as a positive craft, not merely negative avoidance. | सच्चाई दे बचन गी ठीक ढंगै कन्नै समझाना (sachai de bachan gi theek dhangai kannai samjhauna, “explaining the word of truth in the right/straight way”) — [NEW, High]. |
| irreverent babble / gangrene βεβήλους κενοφωνίας… γάγγραινα bēbēlous kenophōnias… gangraina ”profane/godless empty talk… gangrene” | irreligious, worthless chatter; spreading tissue-death godless chatter, empty talk…spreads like gangrene | Vivid warning: false teaching spreads destructively if not stopped. | फालतू गल्लां (faltu gallan, “worthless talk”) — [NEW, Medium]; गैंग्रीन/सड़न वाली बमारी (gangrene / sarhan wali bamari, “a rotting/spreading disease”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| resurrection already happened (false teaching) τὴν ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι tēn anastasin ēdē gegonenai ”the resurrection has already happened” | (heretical claim of Hymenaeus and Philetus) resurrection already past | A concrete named false teaching about resurrection — must be sharply distinguished from true bodily future resurrection. | मुर्दघरा चा जिंदा होना [Baseline TM root — reuse exactly, Critical]; here explicitly flagged as a corrupted claim (“पहले ही होई गेई,” “already happened”) to be refuted, not affirmed. |
| God’s foundation stands / seal ὁ στερεὸς θεμέλιος τοῦ θεοῦ ἕστηκεν…τὴν σφραγῖδα ho stereos themelios tou theou hestēken…tēn sphragida ”the solid foundation of God stands…this seal” | secure base; an official mark of ownership/authentication firm foundation…this seal | God’s unshakeable ownership of his true people amid false teaching. | foundation = मजबूत नींह (majboot neenh, “firm foundation”) — [NEW, Medium]; seal = मोहर (mohar, “official seal”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| the Lord knows those who are his Ἔγνω Κύριος τοὺς ὄντας αὐτοῦ egnō Kyrios tous ontas autou ”the Lord knew those being his” | to know intimately/relationally the Lord knows those who are his | Direct citation echoing election doctrine. | प्रभु [Baseline TM] + परमेश्वर दी चोन दे लोक गी जाणना (Baseline TM root, “election,” High). |
| depart from iniquity ἀποστήτω ἀπὸ ἀδικίας apostētō apo adikias ”let him stand away from unrighteousness” | withdraw from, separate from wrongdoing depart from iniquity | Practical holiness required of anyone who names Christ. | बुराई थमां लांभे रहणा (burai thamā lambhe rehna, “stay away from wrongdoing”) — [NEW, Medium]. Avoid धरम-based constructions per baseline rule against धरम for righteousness/law categories; उपरोक्त word बुराई (“evil/wrongdoing”) is preferred to “अधरम.” |
| vessels for honor / dishonor σκεύη εἰς τιμὴν…εἰς ἀτιμίαν skeuē eis timēn…eis atimian ”vessels for honor…for dishonor” | household containers used for noble or common purposes vessels of honor/dishonor | Moral usefulness to God as the true measure of “honor” — a direct challenge to lineage/rank-based honor. | भांडे (bhande, “vessels”), honor = आदर (aadar), dishonor = निआदरी (niaadari) — [NEW, High]. Directly engages Dogra Rajput izzat (honor) culture already flagged in the baseline; must be taught as moral usefulness to God, never social/lineage honor-rank. |
| flee youthful passions / pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace φεῦγε…δίωκε δὲ δικαιοσύνην, πίστιν, ἀγάπην, εἰρήνην pheuge…diōke de dikaiosynēn, pistin, agapēn, eirēnēn ”flee…but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace” | run from; run after/chase flee…pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace | Classic virtue-list; three of four terms are already established baseline terms. | flee = नठ जा (nath ja, “flee”) — [NEW, Low]; righteousness = धरमीपन [Baseline TM]; faith = भरोसा [Baseline TM]; love (ἀγάπη) = प्रेम — [NEW, Medium, as above]; peace = शान्ति [Baseline TM]. |
| pure heart καθαρᾶς καρδίας katharas kardias ”of a clean/pure heart” | inner moral purity pure heart, clean heart | Fellowship with other believers marked by inner, not ritual, purity. | साफ दिल (saaf dil, “clean heart”) — [NEW, Medium]. Must be kept distinct from ritual purity (शुद्ध), already flagged in the baseline as distinct from moral holiness (पवित्तर). |
| gentleness in correcting opponents πραΰτητα παιδεύοντα prautēta paideuonta ”training/correcting with gentleness” | mild, non-harsh manner with gentleness correcting | Manner of doctrinal correction — tempers “Guarding Sound Doctrine” with grace. | नरमी कन्नै सिखाना (narmi kannai sikhauna, “teach/correct with gentleness”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| repentance leading to knowledge of the truth μετάνοια εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας metanoia eis epignōsin alētheias ”a change of mind toward full knowledge of truth” | inward turning from sin; full/personal knowledge repentance…leading to knowledge of the truth | Restoration of those caught in error — key for “Apostasy and False Teachers.” | repentance = मन फिराना (man phirana, “turning of the mind/heart”) — [NEW, Critical]. This term is entirely absent from the baseline Romans package and requires fresh, careful coining: must be distinguished from prāyaścitta (ritual/ascetic penance to expiate sin in Hindu practice) and from mere पछतावा (regret/remorse without a change of direction). Knowledge of truth (ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας) = सच्चाई दी पछान (sachai di pachhan, “recognition/acquaintance with the truth”) — [NEW, High]. Avoid rendering “knowledge” primarily as ज्ञान (jñāna), the central term of jnana-yoga, the Hindu path of liberating knowledge; qualify as personal recognition of gospel truth, not mystical/gnostic insight. |
| snare of the devil παγὶς τοῦ διαβόλου pagis tou diabolou ”trap/snare of the devil” | a hunting trap; personal evil adversary snare of the devil | The devil actively entraps false teachers and those they deceive. | devil (διάβολος) = शैतान (shaitan) — [NEW, High]. Must be taught as a personal, defeated evil being, distinct from generic bhoot-pret (ghost/spirit) folk belief and from माया (maya, illusion) as an impersonal metaphysical principle. Snare = फंदा (phanda, “trap/snare”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
Chapter 3, verses 1–13 (2 Timothy 3:1–13)
(Verses 3:14–4:5 are the core passage, treated fully in Part 1 above.)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| last days ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις eschatais hēmerais ”in [the] last days” | the final period of the present age before Christ’s return last days, latter days | Anchors “Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days” — linear, historical, one-time eschatology. | आखरी दिन (aakhri din) — [NEW, Critical]. HIGH SALIENCE RISK: the vice-catalogue that follows (vv.2-5) closely resembles popular descriptions of Kali Yuga, the present degenerate age within the cyclical four-yuga Hindu cosmology (Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali). This doctrine must be taught as a single, linear, historical eschatology moving toward one final consummation at Christ’s return — never assimilated into a cyclical decline-and-renewal yuga framework. |
| times of difficulty καιροὶ χαλεποί kairoi chalepoi ”difficult/dangerous seasons” | perilous, harsh periods perilous times, difficult times | Sets the tone for the vice-list. | खतरनाक समां (khatarnak samā, “dangerous times”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| vice catalogue (representative sample) φίλαυτοι, φιλάργυροι, ἀλαζόνες, ὑπερήφανοι, βλάσφημοι, ἀχάριστοι, ἀνόσιοι, ἄστοργοι, ἀκρατεῖς, φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι philautoi, philargyroi, alazones, hyperēphanoi, blasphēmoi, acharistoi, anosioi, astorgoi, akrateis, philēdonoi mallon ē philotheoi ”lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, ungrateful, unholy, without natural love, without self-control, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” | eighteen-plus terms describing moral collapse selfish, greedy, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, unholy… | The full list (vv.2-5) — individually low-to-medium risk terms, but collectively High significance because of the Kali-Yuga resonance flagged above. | Render each descriptively in plain Dogri (e.g. आपने आपै गी प्यार करने वाले, पैसे दे लालची, घमंडी, बेशर्म, नाशुकरे…) — [NEW, individually Low-Medium; collectively flagged High due to the “last days” doctrine risk above]. The climactic contrast φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι (“lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God”) should be rendered so the parallel structure (“lovers of X rather than lovers of God”) is visible in Dogri. |
| form of godliness, denying its power μόρφωσιν εὐσεβείας τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι morphōsin eusebeias tēn de dynamin autēs ērnēmenoi ”an outward form of godliness, but having denied its power” | outward shape/appearance; reverent devotion to God; capability/might a form of godliness, but denying its power | The vice-list’s climax: religious appearance without transforming reality. | godliness (εὐσέβεια) = परमेश्वर दे अनुसार जीवन (Parmeshwar de anusar jeevan, “life according to God”) — [NEW, Critical]. NEVER use भक्ति (bhakti) as the primary rendering. Bhakti is the central term of North Indian devotionalism (the bhakti movement, bhakti yoga, temple bhakti practiced at Raghunath Mandir and Vaishno Devi); using it here would (a) risk being heard as generic, transferable deity-devotion rather than a specifically Christian category, and (b) turn this verse into what reads as an inflammatory critique of Hindu bhakti practice itself, which is not Paul’s point at all. Form/outward appearance (μόρφωσις) = बाहरी रूप (bahri roop, “outward form”) — [NEW, Medium]; power = सामर्थ [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, High]; deny (ἀρνέομαι) = मुकरना (mukarna, “go back on/deny”) — [NEW, Medium], same root as ch.2’s “he cannot deny himself.” |
| avoid such people τούτους ἀποτρέπου toutous apotrepou ”turn away from these” | avoid, shun avoid, have nothing to do with | Practical separation from those who exhibit the false-godliness pattern. | इं लोकां थमां लांभे रह् (in lokan thamā lambhe reh, “stay away from these people”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| impostors, deceivers γόητες, πλάνοι goētes, planoi ”sorcerer/imposter,” “deceiver/wanderer” | charlatan, fraudulent teacher; one who leads astray impostors, deceivers | The specific human agents of end-times apostasy. | धोकेबाज (dhokebaaz, “deceivers/frauds”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| Jannes and Jambres Ἰάννης καὶ Ἰαμβρῆς Iannēs kai Iambrēs proper names | Egyptian magicians opposing Moses (extrabiblical Jewish tradition, cf. Exodus 7) Jannes and Jambres | Historical precedent for opposition to God’s true messenger. | Transliterate as proper names; requires a brief Old Testament (Exodus) background note for readers with low OT literacy. [NEW, Low]. |
| persecution διωγμοί diōgmoi ”persecutions” | hostile, organized opposition persecutions, sufferings | Direct anchor for “Perseverance under Suffering,” generalized to all godly living. | सताया जाना (sataya jana, “being persecuted”) — [NEW, High]. |
| all who desire to live godly…will be persecuted πάντες οἱ θέλοντες εὐσεβῶς ζῆν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ διωχθήσονται pantes hoi thelontes eusebōs zēn en Christō Iēsou diōchthēsontai ”all who wish to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” | — all who desire to live godly…will suffer persecution | Universal principle linking godliness (see above, Critical) with suffering. | Combine godliness rendering above with सताया जाना. [NEW, High]. |
| go from bad to worse προκόψουσιν ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖρον prokopsousin epi to cheiron ”will progress toward the worse” | escalating moral decline will go from bad to worse | Escalation of apostasy, reinforcing the “last days” trajectory. | बुरे थमां बुरे बणदे जाणा (bure thamā bure bandē jāna, “become worse from bad”) — [NEW, Low]. |
Chapter 4, verses 6–22 (2 Timothy 4:6–22)
(Verses 4:1–5 are the core passage, treated fully in Part 1 above.)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| I am already being poured out ἐγὼ…σπένδομαι egō…spendomai ”I am being poured out as a libation” | sacrificial drink-offering imagery I am being poured out as a libation | Paul frames his approaching death as a sacrificial offering, tying “Perseverance under Suffering” to “Assurance of Reward.” | डोहलेआ जाना (dohlea jana, “being poured out”) — [NEW, Medium]. Note care: avoid importing Hindu libation/offering ritual connotations (arghya, tarpan) uncritically; the self-giving sacrificial image is theologically apt but must be explained as a metaphor for costly, faithful death, not a ritual offering to a deity. |
| time of my departure ὁ καιρὸς τῆς ἀναλύσεώς μου ho kairos tēs analyseōs mou ”the time of my release/departure” | nautical/military image of loosing moorings; a euphemism for death time of my departure | Paul’s death viewed as a release, not defeat. | मेरे जाने दा वेळ (mere jane da vel, “the time of my going”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα ἠγώνισμαι, τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα, τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα ton kalon agōna ēgōnismai, ton dromon teteleka, tēn pistin tetērēka ”I have fought/competed the good contest, completed the race, kept the faith” | athletic-contest and running-race imagery; guarded/preserved trust fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith | Paul’s summary testimony of perseverance — direct model for “Assurance of Reward.” | fought = लड़ाई लड़ी (ladai ladi) — [NEW, Medium]; finished the race = दौड़ पूरी कीती (daud poori kiti) — [NEW, Medium]; kept the faith = भरोसा रक्खेआ (bharosa rakhea) — [Baseline TM root — reuse भरोसा exactly, High]. |
| crown of righteousness ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος ho tēs dikaiosynēs stephanos ”the crown of righteousness” | a victor’s wreath/crown crown of righteousness | The eschatological reward Christ gives — anchors “Assurance of Reward.” | धरमीपन दा मुकट (dharmipan da mukat) — [NEW, High]. CULTURAL COLLISION FLAG: crown/mukat imagery is strongly associated in this region with (a) deity ornamentation — temple deities (e.g., at Vaishno Devi and Raghunath Mandir) are ceremonially crowned — and (b) Dogra dynastic royal regalia. Must be taught explicitly as an eschatological reward given by Christ the righteous Judge to his faithful servants, never a royal crown or an object of devotional adornment placed on an idol. |
| righteous judge ὁ δίκαιος κριτής ho dikaios kritēs ”the righteous judge” | one who judges justly the righteous judge | Christ’s role at his appearing, tying judgment (4:1) to reward. | धरमी न्यायी (dharmi nyayi) — [NEW, Critical], built on धरमीपन (baseline Critical term) and न्याय करने आळा (established at 4:1). |
| will award ἀποδώσει apodōsei ”he will give back/repay” | to render what is due, reward or repay will award, will give | Positive reward here; note the same root is used negatively of Alexander below. | देग (deyega, “will give”) — [NEW, Low]. |
| all who have loved his appearing πᾶσι τοῖς ἠγαπηκόσι τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ pasi tois ēgapēkosi tēn epiphaneian autou ”to all who have loved his appearing” | — all who have loved his appearing | Reward is for all believers who long for Christ’s return, not an elite few. | Combine established प्रेम/प्यार (“love,” Medium) with परगट होना (“appearing,” established in 4:1, High). [NEW, High]. |
| the Lord will repay him according to his deeds ἀποδώσει αὐτῷ ὁ Κύριος κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ apodōsei autō ho Kyrios kata ta erga autou ”the Lord will repay him according to his works” | just recompense for wrongdoing the Lord will repay him according to his deeds | Concerning Alexander the coppersmith — judgment left to the Lord, not personal vengeance. | प्रभु [Baseline TM] + बदला देग (badla deyega, “will give recompense”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| the Lord stood by me and strengthened me ὁ Κύριός μοι παρέστη καὶ ἐνεδυνάμωσέν με ho Kyrios moi parestē kai enedynamōsen me ”the Lord stood beside me and empowered me” | personal presence and empowerment the Lord stood by me and strengthened me | Personal providence amid trial — ties “Perseverance under Suffering” to “Providence.” | प्रभु [Baseline TM] + मेरे कोल़ रैहा ते मिगी मजबूत कीता (mere kol raiha te migi majboot kita, “stayed by me and made me strong”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| rescued from the lion’s mouth ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος errysthēn ek stomatos leontos ”I was rescued from the lion’s mouth” | delivered from mortal danger (idiom, cf. Daniel/Psalms imagery) delivered from the lion’s mouth | Vivid image of God’s deliverance from extreme danger. | शेर दे मूं थमां बचाइया गेआ (sher de moon thamā bachaiya gea, “was saved from the lion’s mouth”) — [NEW, Medium]. |
| the Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom ῥύσεται…καὶ σώσει εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐπουράνιον rhysetai…kai sōsei eis tēn basileian autou tēn epouranion ”he will rescue…and will save into his heavenly kingdom” | deliver from danger; bring safely into will rescue…and bring me to his heavenly kingdom | Final assurance statement, joining rescue, salvation, and kingdom-inheritance. | rescue (ῥύομαι) = बचाना (bachana, “save/rescue”) — [NEW, Medium]; save = उद्धार [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Critical]; heavenly kingdom = परमेश्वर दा राज्य [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, Medium] + स्वर्गीय (swargiya, “heavenly”) — [NEW, Low-Medium]; note स्वर्ग (“heaven”) is a shared word also used of the Hindu heavenly realm (svarga), a temporary abode, not the eternal destination of moksha — flag for translator awareness that the Christian “heavenly kingdom” is the believer’s permanent, eternal home, unlike the impermanent svarga of Hindu cosmology. |
| to whom be glory forever and ever ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων hō hē doxa eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn ”to whom [be] the glory unto the ages of the ages” | doxological formula to whom be glory forever and ever | Closing doxology. | महिमा [Baseline TM — reuse exactly, High] + हमेशा हमेशा आस्तै (hamesha hamesha aaste, “forever and ever”) — [NEW, Low]. |

[NEW, Low]. |
