Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Luke (English → Dogri)

Purpose

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md across the whole of Luke’s Gospel (chapters 1-24), for direct loading into Phase 2 translation memory alongside the Romans baseline. Terms already established in the Romans translation_memory.json are marked “Reused” and must be rendered exactly as recorded there — no deviation permitted. Terms newly required by Luke’s distinct doctrinal content are marked “New” and are proposed here for theologian confirmation and addition to translation memory before Phase 2 begins.

Risk tiers follow the Romans baseline definitions exactly:

  • Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; human theologian review of every occurrence required.
  • High — significant theological confusion/syncretism risk; human theologian review required.
  • Medium — clarity reduced but core meaning preserved; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — minor imprecision risk; automated review sufficient.

Table 1 — Reused Terms from the Romans Baseline (No Deviation Permitted)

Critical Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: बिना कमाई दित्ती दया
Transliteration: bina kamai ditti daya
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: मन्नत दा फल (Vaishno Devi vow-boon, never use), पुण्य (earned merit, never use)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:30 uses χάρις in the lighter register ‘favor found’; render Luke 1:30 with a lighter phrase while reserving this full Critical compound for the technical soteriological doctrine elsewhere in the curriculum’s cross-references.

Righteousness

Approved rendering: धरमीपन
Transliteration: dharmipan
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धरम (avoid Dogra Rajput lineage/honor duty sense)

Inherited from Romans package. Root of the doctrine underlying Luke 18:9-14’s justification language; never bare धरम.

Justification

Approved rendering: धर्मी ठहराए जाना
Transliteration: dharmi thehrae jana
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: माफी मिलना (forgiveness received, too narrow)

Inherited from Romans package. Relevant at Luke 18:14 (‘this man went down to his house justified’); must be kept distinct from पापां दी माफी (forgiveness of sins), the narrower guilt-release sense.

Salvation

Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhar
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति (liberation from rebirth, never use), मनोकामना पूरी होना (shrine-vow boon granted, never use)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:69, 1:71, 1:77, 19:9 (‘today salvation has come to this house’); root of the new Savior compound below.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: मुर्दघरा चा जिंदा होना
Transliteration: murdaghara cha jinda hona
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation, never use)
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 9:22, 18:33, 20:27-40, 24:1-49 (the Gospel’s climax); never पुनर्जन्म, always with a distinguishing note where the audience includes Hindu-background hearers.

Lord

Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: महाराजा (historic Dogra dynastic title, never use)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:43, 2:11, 5:8, 19:38, 20:41-44; never महाराजा, which would frame Christ’s Lordship as political-historical.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर दा पुत्तर
Transliteration: Parmeshwar da puttar
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: अवतार (avatar-descent, explicit downgrade, never use)
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ / υἱὸς ὑψίστου
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:32, 1:35, 3:22, 4:3, 4:9, 9:35, 22:70; never one avatar among Vishnu’s recognized avatars, given Raghunath Mandir’s Rama devotion.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: मानखे दा रूप लैना
Transliteration: mankhe da roop laina
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: अवतार (never use)
Original: (conceptual; cf. 1:31-35, 2:6-7)
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:31-35, 2:6-7, 2:21; the eternal Son’s permanent, unique assumption of human nature, once — never a repeatable divine descent.

Messiah

Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: masih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 2:11, 2:26, 3:15, 4:41, 9:20, 22:67, 23:35; not one avatar or deity among many venerated locally.

Jesus

Approved rendering: यीशु
Transliteration: Yishu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईसा (reserve for interfaith-dialogue framing only)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout Luke; never ईसा outside interfaith framing.

God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parmeshwar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: भगवान (broad Hindu deity usage, avoid)
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Never भगवान, which could evoke Rama, Kali, or the Vaishno Devi goddess.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्तर आत्मा
Transliteration: pavittar aatma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शक्ति (goddess-power, never use), परमात्मा alone (impersonal universal Self, never use)

Father

Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: pita
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 2:49, 6:36, 11:2, 11:11-13, 15:12-32, 22:42, 23:34, 23:46; personal, relational, not dynastic.

Savior

Approved rendering: उद्धार करने वाला
Transliteration: uddhar karne wala
Doctrine: Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People
Rejected alternatives: त्राता (unfamiliar Sanskritized loan), generic avatar-framing
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

Built on the established Critical उद्धार root (Luke 1:47, 2:11). Never presented as one of several available divine benefactors alongside Rama, Kali, or the Vaishno Devi goddess. Luke 2:11 joins Savior, Christ, and Lord in one verse; all three must appear together without qualification.

Repentance

Approved rendering: मन फेरना
Transliteration: man ferna
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: प्रायश्चित (ritual expiation/penance, never use), पछताबा alone (mere regret, insufficient)
Original: μετάνοια
Category: Repentance

Luke 3:3, 3:8, 5:32, 13:3, 13:5, 15:7, 15:10, 24:47. Must convey decisive, Spirit-wrought reorientation of the whole person, evidenced by changed living, not a ritual mechanism for erasing guilt’s consequence.

Baptism

Approved rendering: बपतिस्मा
Transliteration: baptisma
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: स्नान / इशनान (ritual purificatory bathing at a tirath or before darshan, never use)
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Repentance

Luke 3:3, 3:16, 3:21, 7:29, 12:50. A decisive, one-time public act, not a repeatable ritual purification. Confirm transliterated form against the BSI Dogri Bible.

Demon

Approved rendering: दुष्ट आत्मा
Transliteration: dushta atma
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance from Demons
Rejected alternatives: भूत / भूत-प्रेत (folk ghost/ancestor-spirit terms addressed via an ojha, never use)
Original: δαιμόνιον
Category: Spiritual Warfare

Luke 4:33-36, 4:41, 8:2, 8:26-39, 9:37-43, 11:14-20, 13:32. Deliverance in Luke is Christ’s unique, authoritative command, never a negotiated exorcism ritual.

Hades

Approved rendering: मृतकां दी दुनिया
Transliteration: mritakan di duniya
Doctrine: Afterlife and Final Judgment
Rejected alternatives: नरक (Hindu hell-realm within the rebirth cycle, never use), पताल (Hindu netherworld, never use)
Original: Ἅδης
Category: Eschatology

Luke 10:15, 16:23. A fixed, non-cyclical post-mortem state distinct from samsara.

Paradise

Approved rendering: स्वर्ग
Transliteration: swarg
Doctrine: Afterlife and Final Judgment
Original: παράδεισος
Category: Repentance

Luke 23:43. Requires a mandatory teaching note distinguishing this from Hindu स्वर्ग-लोक, a temporary heavenly abode within samsara from which a soul may still be reborn. A documented sectarian (Jehovah’s Witnesses NWT) punctuation dispute exists on this verse; render ‘today’ as modifying the promise itself, never the speaking.

Cross

Approved rendering: क्रूस
Transliteration: kroos
Doctrine: The Cost and Joy of Discipleship
Original: σταυρός
Category: Discipleship

Luke 9:23, 14:27, 23:26. Established regional Christian transliteration; the daily, ongoing, self-denying demand must never be softened to a one-time gesture.

Crucify

Approved rendering: क्रूस उपर चढ़ाना
Transliteration: kroos upar chadhana
Doctrine: Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People
Original: σταυρόω
Category: Christology

Luke 23:21, 23, 33. Verb form of the established Critical cross term; consistent rendering required across all crucifixion references.

Blood Of Covenant

Approved rendering: नियम दा खून
Transliteration: niyam da khoon
Doctrine: New Covenant and Atonement
Original: τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης
Category: Covenant

Luke 22:20. Once-for-all, unrepeatable atoning sacrifice, distinguished from ongoing animal-sacrifice (bali) offerings still practiced at some regional shrines.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: खरी खबर
