Executive Summary
Executive Summary — Gospel of John (English → Dogri)
Why it matters
The Gospel of John curriculum extends the Romans-curriculum Dogri Language Package into the New Testament’s most theologically explicit book. John concentrates claims about Christ’s deity, the Word, and the seven “I Am” statements at a density Romans never approaches — and in doing so, collides not only with the Dogra Rajput Hindu devotional landscape Romans already documents (Raghunath Mandir’s Rama-avatar devotion, the Bahu Fort Kali shrine, the Vaishno Devi mannat economy, karma/rebirth categories) but with a second, equally serious collision class specific to John: the Kashmir Shaivite/Advaita Vedantic philosophical tradition of the wider Sharada-script region adjoining Duggar territory, where Śabda-Brahman (“the Word” as impersonal cosmic sound) and “aham brahmāsmi” (“I am Brahman,” a universally achievable self-realization) are live, prestigious categories — not distant abstractions. Getting John wrong in Dogri risks either erasing Christ’s unique deity into a familiar avatar pattern, or dissolving his unique self-declaration into a mystical state any devotee could claim for themselves. This document set exists to prevent both failure modes across all 21 chapters, anchored at the core passage John 3:1-21.
Key findings
- Full-book coverage confirmed. All 21 chapters were reviewed (Phase 1 Steps 1–8); no chapter was silently omitted. John 1, 3, 8, 10, 14, 17, and 20 carry the heaviest doctrinal concentration.
- 35 distinct doctrines identified and risk-tiered in
doctrine_risk_registry.json: 15 Critical, 15 High, 4 Medium, 1 Low — 30 of 35 (86%) require mandatory human theologian review; only 1 (Passover typology) is automated-review-only. - ~104 theological terms are now governed in
assets/translation_memory.json: 28 inherited unmodified from the Romans baseline, 76 newly introduced by John. Of the full term set, approximately 40 are Critical-risk and 42 are High-risk (82 terms, ~79% of the glossary) requiring mandatory theologian oversight before any Phase 2 segment is approved. - The single highest-priority risk item in the entire curriculum is the absolute “I am” (मैं आं, John 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5-8), which requires a mandatory anti-Advaitic teaching note at every occurrence — no lexical fix exists; only disclosure and instruction can guard it.
- Five terms are absolutely forbidden, extending the Romans baseline prohibitions into John: शब्द (Śabda, for “the Word”), अवतार (avatar), पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation, now doubly critical given New Birth’s adjacency to Resurrection in ch.3), मोक्ष/मुक्ति (liberation into Brahman/samsara), and संसार (for “world”).
- Two regionally specific fringe/cult risks were newly identified beyond the Romans baseline’s scope: Radha Soami Satsang Beas / Surat Shabd Yoga’s guru-mediated “Shabd” doctrine (directly implicated in the शब्द prohibition) and the Roza Bal tomb legend in Srinagar (a local “Jesus survived the crucifixion” distortion bearing directly on John 19–20’s anti-docetic details).
- Irreducible wordplay losses were catalogued as a distinct risk category, not a translation error: ἄνωθεν (“again”/“from above,” 3:3,7), the πνεῦμα wind/Spirit pun (3:8), ὑψωθῆναι’s crucifixion/exaltation double sense (3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34), and the ἀγαπάω/φιλέω love distinction (esp. 21:15-17) all require mandatory disclosure notes rather than a “better” word choice, since no Dogri equivalent exists.
Risks
- Highest risk: मैं आं (absolute I Am) heard as compatible with Advaitic self-realization — would convert Christ’s unique divine self-declaration into a universally attainable spiritual state.
- Critical risk: New Birth (ऊप्पर थमां नवां जन्म) collapsing into पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation), intensified by its textual proximity to Resurrection doctrine within the same core passage.
- Critical risk: “The Word” (बचन) drifting toward शब्द and Śabda-Brahman, especially given active regional Surat Shabd Yoga devotional practice.
- Critical risk: Eternal Life (सदा दी जिन्दगी) read as मोक्ष (dissolution of personal identity) rather than relational knowledge of God (John 17:3).
- High risk: “It is finished” (पूरा होई गेआ) heard as compatible with the Vaishno Devi mannat vow-and-offering economy rather than a completed, sufficient, once-for-all act.
- High risk: Foot-washing (13:1-17) and honor/shame dynamics colliding with Dogra Rajput izzat culture if translated without native-speaker sensitivity review.
Opportunities
- John’s own witness-and-testimony structure (1:7-34 through 21:24) offers a built-in apologetic framework for presenting Christ’s exclusive claims to a culture already fluent in questions of authoritative teaching and lineage-based legitimacy (izzat).
- The Samaritan-woman worship dialogue (4:20-24) provides a natural, textually-grounded bridge for addressing the region’s own multi-shrine devotional landscape (Raghunath Mandir/Bahu Fort/Vaishno Devi) without requiring an invented cultural analogy.
- John 9’s explicit rejection of karma-style suffering causation offers a direct, textually anchored pastoral resource for a culture where this explanatory framework is dominant and often pastorally painful.
- The New Birth’s untranslatable ἄνωθεν wordplay, properly disclosed, becomes a teaching opportunity: Nicodemus’s own confusion mirrors the exact confusion a Dogri hearer risks, letting the text’s internal correction do double duty.
Recommended actions
- Load
assets/translation_memory.jsonand the Romans baseline TM together before any Phase 2 segment translation; treat any discrepancy between inherited terms as a data error requiring halt-and-review, not silent resolution. - Enforce the mandatory anti-Advaitic teaching note on every absolute “I am” occurrence as the top automated-flag priority in Phase 2 Step 17 review routing.
- Route all 30 theologian-required doctrines and all ~82 Critical/High terms through human theologian review before Phase 2 approval; reserve native-speaker-only review for the 4 Medium-tier doctrines (Witness/Testimony, Kingdom Mission, Mission/Sending, Discipleship/Love Command).
- Confirm the YouVersion Dogri Bible Version ID (currently a placeholder
{VERSION_ID}) before generating any learner-facing citation links, reusing the same ID the Romans curriculum confirms rather than selecting a second one independently. - Prioritize confirmation of the two newly coined terms — बचन (Word) and सहाई (Counselor) — against the BSI Dogri Bible before wide deployment, per the standing baseline caution on unconfirmed new terms.
- Brief all human theologian reviewers on the two named regional fringe risks (Surat Shabd Yoga, Roza Bal legend) before Phase 2 review begins, since neither is self-evident from the English source text alone.
