Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Gospel of John (English → Dogri)
This glossary lists every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from all 21 chapters of John. Terms already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked REUSE and must be rendered identically; their entries are repeated here only for completeness of the John curriculum’s working glossary. Terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions for the updated translation memory (Phase 1 Step 8) and require the risk-tier review routing specified in the (also to be updated) doctrine_risk_registry.json.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| the Word (Logos) | बचन | bachan | λόγος | Critical | 1:1, 14 | REJECTED: शब्द (Shabda) — collides with Śabda-Brahman, the cosmic-sound-as-ultimate-reality concept in Kashmir Shaivite/Vedāntic thought prominent in the wider Sharada-script cultural region adjoining Duggar territory |
| ”the Word was God” | बचन परमेश्वर ही हा | bachan Parmeshwar hi ha | θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος | Critical | 1:1 | Grammatical note mandatory: word order signals full, qualitative deity, not “a god” |

Cross-Document Consistency Requirements (per Theological Consistency Rules)
The following renderings must remain verbatim identical across every Phase 2 document in this curriculum, matching the precedent already set for Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, and 10:9-10:
- John 3:16 — the full verse, especially दुनिया (world), इकलौता पुत्तर (only Son), and सदा दी जिन्दगी (eternal life)
- John 1:1, 1:14 — बचन (the Word) and मानखे दा रूप लैना (the Word became flesh)
- John 8:58 and all absolute ἐγώ εἰμι occurrences — मैं आं (I am), with its mandatory anti-Advaitic teaching note
- John 10:30 — मैं ते पिता इक्क आं (I and the Father are one)
- John 14:6 — मैं आं राह्, सच्च ते जिन्दगी (the Way, the Truth, and the Life), with its mandatory exclusivity teaching note
- John 19:30 — पूरा होई गेआ (It is finished)
- John 20:28 — मेरा प्रभु ते मेरा परमेश्वर (My Lord and my God)
- John 20:30-31 — the Gospel’s purpose statement, functioning as this curriculum’s thesis verse parallel to Romans 1:16-17

Transliteration: masih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ

Transliteration: uddhar
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति (rebirth-cycle liberation, never use), मनोकामना पूरी होना (shrine-vow boon, never use)

Rejected alternatives: सिर्फ इक्क मनुक्ख (merely ‘a human being’, flattens the title)

Transliteration: main aan zindagi di roti
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς

Original: ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή
Category: Christology
NEW. John 14:6. ‘No one comes to the Father except through me’ stands directly against the region’s pluralistic multi-marg, multi-shrine devotional culture. Mandatory exclusivity teaching note required; cross-document consistency-locked verse.

Transliteration: main aan sacchi angoor di bel
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements

Rejected alternatives: any merit-based-elevation framing, forbidden
Original: ὑψωθῆναι
Category: Christology
NEW. John 3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34. Deliberate double meaning: crucifixion and exaltation happen together. Must not read as a merit-based elevation to divine status (avatar-adjacent risk). Mandatory teaching note at every occurrence.

Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: τὴν δόξαν… πρὸ τοῦ τὸν κόσμον εἶναι
Category: Christology
NEW. John 17:5, 24. Reuses baseline महिमा plus a descriptive temporal clause since Dogri has no single noun for ‘pre-existence’ as a category; must be taught as eternal possession, not achieved status.
Lamb Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वरे दा भेडू
Transliteration: Parmeshware da bhedu
Doctrine: The Lamb of God and Substitutionary Atonement
Rejected alternatives: any Shakta propitiatory blood-sacrifice framing (Bahu Fort Kali shrine pattern), forbidden
Original: ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Rejected alternatives: मोक्ष (dissolution into Brahman, forbidden), मुक्ति (already forbidden in baseline, forbidden here too)
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
NEW. Occurs at least 17 times (3:15-16, 36; 4:14, 36; 5:24, 39; 6:27, 40, 47, 54, 68; 10:28; 12:25, 50; 17:2-3; 20:31). Must always be paired in teaching with the John 17:3 definitional clause (see eternal_life_definitional) to anchor its relational, not duration-only, meaning.
Eternal Life Definitional
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर जो जाणना
Transliteration: Parmeshwar jo jaanna
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
NEW. John 17:3: ‘this is eternal life, that they know you.’ Guards against reducing eternal life to unending duration alone or to dissolution of the self into an impersonal absolute.
Born Again
Approved rendering: ऊप्पर थमां नवां जन्म
Transliteration: uppar thamaan navaan janam
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation, absolutely forbidden), dvija/‘twice-born’ caste-linked ritual second-birth framing, forbidden
Original: γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 3:3, 7. Renders gennethe anothen. Greek anothen carries a deliberate double sense (‘from above’/‘again’) with no Dogri lexical equivalent; Nicodemus’s own misunderstanding in the text depends on this ambiguity. Mandatory translator note required at every occurrence explaining the lost wordplay.
Born Of Water And Spirit
Approved rendering: पाणी ते आत्मा तो जन्म
Transliteration: paani te aatma to janam
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध-style ritual purity washing, avoided
Original: γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ πνεύματος

Counselor Paraclete
Approved rendering: सहाई
Transliteration: sahai
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Rejected alternatives: शक्ति (impersonal goddess-power, never use)
Original: παράκλητος
Category: God
NEW coinage; no confirmed prior Dogri Christian usage located — flag for confirmation against the BSI Dogri Bible. John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7. Must always be paired with पवित्तर आत्मा so the personal, divine identity of the Counselor is unmistakable.
Receive The Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्तर आत्मा लैओ
Transliteration: pavittar aatma laio
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: λάβετε πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
NEW. John 20:22. Reuses पवित्तर आत्मा exactly; must never soften toward impersonal empowerment or a goddess-power framework.
I And Father Are One
Approved rendering: मैं ते पिता इक्क आं
Transliteration: main te pita ikk aan
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Rejected alternatives: ‘sab ek hai’ monistic all-is-one framing, forbidden
Original: ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν
Category: God
NEW. John 10:30. The neuter hen (‘one thing’) signals unity of nature/essence, not merely agreement-in-purpose — इक्क is ambiguous by itself and defaults to the weaker reading in everyday Dogri usage. Cross-document consistency-locked verse; mandatory teaching note required distinguishing this from believers’ derivative unity (17:11, 21-22).
Honor The Son
Approved rendering: पुत्तर दा उही आदर
Transliteration: puttar da uhi aadar
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son

Category: God
NEW. John 14:9. Christ’s claim to perfectly and fully reveal the Father in himself; must retain the force of perfect revelation, not mere resemblance.
My Father Your Father
Approved rendering: मेरा पिता ते तुसां दा पिता
Transliteration: mera pita te tusaan da pita
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ πατέρα ὑμῶν, καὶ θεόν μου καὶ θεὸν ὑμῶν
Category: God
NEW. John 20:17. Distinguishes Christ’s unique, natural Sonship from believers’ derivative, adoptive sonship in the same breath; requires the baseline’s Sonship/adoption distinction already taught.
My Lord And My God
Approved rendering: मेरा प्रभु ते मेरा परमेश्वर
Transliteration: mera prabhu te mera Parmeshwar
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: exclamatory reading that avoids a full-deity confession (per Jehovah’s Witness literature pattern), forbidden
Original: ὁ κύριός μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου
Category: Christology
NEW. John 20:28. Reuses प्रभु and परमेश्वर exactly; must be rendered verbatim-consistently at every occurrence, parallel to Romans 10:9’s cross-document consistency requirement.
It Is Finished
Approved rendering: पूरा होई गेआ
Transliteration: pura hoi geya
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: any implication that a supplementary vow or offering is needed, forbidden
Original: τετέλεσται
Category: Christology
NEW. John 19:30. Perfect tense: a completed, permanent state. Directly extends the baseline’s grace-vs-mannat distinction into the cross itself — nothing further is needed, in direct contrast to the Vaishno Devi vow-and-offering economy.
World
Approved rendering: दुनिया
Transliteration: duniya
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Rejected alternatives: संसार (samsara, the cycle of worldly/rebirth existence, absolutely forbidden)
Original: κόσμος
Category: Salvation
NEW. Pervasive throughout John (1:10, 29; 3:16-17, 19; 8:12; 12:31, 47; 15:18-19; 16:33; 17:5-25; 18:36). Used in at least three senses (loved object, hostile system, defeated realm) that all depend on the same underlying non-cyclical term — a single wrong choice anywhere would retroactively distort every other occurrence.
Only Son
Approved rendering: इकलौता पुत्तर
Transliteration: iklauta puttar
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Rejected alternatives: any ‘one avatar among several’ framing, forbidden
Original: μονογενής
Category: Christology
NEW. John 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18. Renders monogenes. Must always be paired with परमेश्वर दा पुत्तर to jointly foreclose an avatar-plurality reading (Rama as one of Vishnu’s several avatars).

Faith
Approved rendering: भरोसा
Transliteration: bharosa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा (generalized devotional reverence, too broad)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Transliteration: pavittar
Doctrine: Sanctification

Approved rendering: गोद लैने आह् पुत्तर बनाना
Transliteration: god laine aah puttar banana
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: τέκνα θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unmodified. Renders John’s own vocabulary tekna theou (‘children of God’, 1:12-13; 11:52; 20:17), distinct from Christ’s unique huios (Son) status. Must guard against a reduced-status reading given Dogra Rajput izzat culture.
Law
Approved rendering: व्यवस्था
Transliteration: vyavastha
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: धरम (avoid Dogra Rajput lineage-duty associations)
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unmodified. Referenced throughout John’s debates with religious authorities (1:17, 45; 7:19-51; 8:5, 17; 10:34; 15:25; 19:7).

Glory
Approved rendering: महिमा
Transliteration: mahima
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unmodified. Displayed through Christ throughout John, especially at the cross (1:14; 2:11; 7:39; 8:54; 11:4, 40; 12:23, 28, 41; 13:31-32; 17:1-24). Avoid conflation with aarti/temple-lighting ceremonial splendor.
Covenant
Approved rendering: नियम
Transliteration: niyam
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: समझौता (negotiated deal, too transactional)
Original: διαθήκη (cf. νόμος as covenant document)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unmodified. Underlies John’s frequent references to the Law and Moses’s promises.
Descended Ascended
Approved rendering: उतरना / चढ़ना
Transliteration: utarna / chadhna
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: any periodic/repeatable-descent framing, avoided
Original: καταβάς / ἀναβέβηκεν
Category: Christology
NEW. John 3:13; 6:38, 62. Must convey true pre-existent heavenly origin, not an avatar’s periodic descent (e.g. Rama at Raghunath Mandir).
King Of Israel Kingship
Approved rendering: इस्राएल दा राजा
Transliteration: Israel da raja
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: महाराजा (never use for this or for Lord)
Original: βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Category: Christology
NEW. John 1:49; 12:13; 18:33-37; 19:19. Must be read as spiritual/messianic kingship, not political-dynastic kingship, given the region’s own recently-ended Dogra princely-state history.
Perish
Approved rendering: नाश होना
Transliteration: nash hona
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Rejected alternatives: softened to ‘suffer’, avoided; framing as one more turn of a rebirth cycle, avoided
Original: ἀπόλλυμι
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 3:16; 10:28; 17:12. The negative alternative to eternal life — final, not cyclical.
Believe
Approved rendering: भरोसा करना
Transliteration: bharosa karna
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: πιστεύω
Category: Faith
NEW verb-form extension of the baseline noun भरोसा (faith). Renders John’s central verb pisteuo (~98 occurrences); John never uses the noun pistis. The object of belief must always be specified from context to prevent a generalized-devotion reading transferable to any regional deity.
Flesh Natural Birth
Approved rendering: देह
Transliteration: deh
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Original: σάρξ
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 3:6; 1:13. Must be distinguished contextually from the baseline’s positive use of the same underlying concept in मानखे दा रूप लैना (Incarnation); here it denotes the limitation of merely natural birth.
Wind Spirit Pun
Approved rendering: हवा (literal wind) / पवित्तर आत्मा (spiritual sense)
Transliteration: hawa / pavittar aatma
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
NEW. John 3:8. Greek pneuma puns wind/Spirit; Dogri हवा and पवित्तर आत्मा are unrelated words. No lexical fix exists — mandatory translator note required explaining the single Greek word carries both senses simultaneously.

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर थमां जन्म
Transliteration: Parmeshwar thamaan janam
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: ἐκ θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν
Category: Salvation

Worship
Approved rendering: आराधना
Transliteration: aaradhana
Doctrine: Worship in Spirit and Truth
Rejected alternatives: पूजा (image/murti veneration and ritual offering, avoided as primary rendering)
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 4:20-24; 9:38; 12:20. ‘True worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth’ directly confronts place-bound, shrine-based worship; the passage’s own Jerusalem-vs-Samaria geography closely parallels the Duggar region’s own multi-shrine landscape (Raghunath Mandir/Bahu Fort/Vaishno Devi). Mandatory teaching note that true worship is not place-bound.
Freedom From Sin
Approved rendering: आजाद करना / पाप दा गुलाम
Transliteration: azad karna / paap da gulam
Doctrine: Sin and Bondage
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति (samsara-liberation, already forbidden, forbidden here too)
Original: ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς / δοῦλος τῆς ἁμαρτίας

Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर दा कहर
Transliteration: Parmeshwar da kahar
Doctrine: The Wrath of God
Rejected alternatives: नाराज़गी (mere displeasure, avoided as too weak)
Original: ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God
NEW. John 3:36. Must be taught as righteous judicial opposition to unbelief, not a capricious or appeasable deity-wrath requiring ritual placation — distinct from the Shakta pattern of propitiating an angry deity (Kali at Bahu Fort) through offerings.
Judgment
Approved rendering: न्याय / फैसला
Transliteration: nyay / faisla
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κρίσις
Category: Judgment
NEW. John 3:19; 5:24, 29; 9:39; 12:31; 16:8, 11. Must convey a personal, moral verdict from a personal God, not impersonal karmic consequence — the dominant popular explanatory framework in the region.
Condemn
Approved rendering: दोष लाना / सज़ा दिणा
Transliteration: dosh lana / saza dina
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κρίνειν
Category: Judgment
NEW. John 3:17. Contrasted with ‘save’ — the Son’s primary mission-purpose is salvific, though judgment necessarily follows unbelief.
Condemned Already
Approved rendering: दोषी ठहराया गेआ
Transliteration: doshi thehraya geya
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κέκριται
Category: Judgment
NEW. John 3:18. Deliberate negative structural mirror of the baseline’s justification term धर्मी ठहराए जाना; condemnation for unbelief is a present, settled legal state, not merely a future possibility or gradual karmic drift.

Transliteration: chanan
Doctrine: Light and Darkness
Rejected alternatives: ज्योति (temple/aarti-lamp ceremonial association, avoided)

Works Moral Deeds
Approved rendering: कम्म
Transliteration: kamm
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: ἔργα
Category: Sin
NEW. John 3:19-21; 6:28-29; 9:3-4. Must keep the grace-versus-works antithesis established in the Romans baseline (4:4-5, 11:5-6) consistent here.
Truth
Approved rendering: सच्च
Transliteration: sach
Doctrine: Truth as Embodied Reality in Christ
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Judgment
NEW. John 1:14, 17; 8:32, 44; 14:6, 17; 16:13; 17:17; 18:37-38. Ultimate, exclusive reality revealed in and embodied by Christ, never merely ‘an accurate statement’ among many possible true statements from other teachers.
Does What Is True
Approved rendering: सच्च करना
Transliteration: sach karna
Doctrine: Truth as Embodied Reality in Christ
Original: ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν
Category: Judgment

Doctrine: Sin and Bondage
Original: ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου
Category: Sin
NEW. John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11. Satan’s title as the defeated ruler judged and cast out through Christ’s cross — an already-defeated power, not an ongoing rival requiring appeasement.
Suffering Without Reference To Sin
Approved rendering: ओह्दा पाप कि ओह्दे मां-बाप दा
Transliteration: ohda paap ki ohde maa-baap da
Doctrine: Suffering and God’s Sovereign Purposes
Original: τίς ἥμαρτεν
Category: Sin
NEW. John 9:1-3. Jesus’s answer directly and explicitly rejects a karma-style sin-causes-suffering explanatory framework, the dominant popular explanation for congenital disability in the region. Mandatory teaching note required.
Spirit Of Truth
Approved rendering: सच्च दी आत्मा
Transliteration: sach di aatma
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας
