Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 2 John (Koine Greek → Dogri)
Scope and Method
2 John is a single-chapter epistle of 13 verses. Per the PRD Phase 1 Step 1 mandate, this analysis covers the entire book, first verse to last, with the core passage (1:4–11) receiving full verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term (original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, destination-rendering risk). The remaining verses of the (single) chapter — 1:1–3 and 1:12–13 — are covered immediately after with the same rigor, since they constitute the entirety of the book outside the core passage. A closing note confirms full-book coverage explicitly, since 2 John has no further chapters.
Every term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded there (Dogri form, transliteration, and risk tier are not altered). New terms required by 2 John’s distinct vocabulary (ἀλήθεια, ἀγάπη, μένω, διδαχή, πλάνος, ἀντίχριστος, κόσμος, ἔλεος, κοινωνέω in its negative sense, ἐντολή, πρεσβύτερος, κυρία, etc.) are analyzed fresh here and proposed for addition to the Dogri translation memory, following the same descriptive-compound and Dogri-distinct-vocabulary discipline the baseline establishes.
CORE PASSAGE: 2 John 1:4–11 (Verse-by-Verse)
2 John 1:4
English (ESV): “I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we have received commandment from the Father.”
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| children τέκνων (τέκνον, gen. pl.) teknōn ”born ones, offspring” | Biological children; spiritual children/converts; members of a church body children, offspring | Likely the members of a local congregation under the “elect lady’s” care, not (only) literal offspring — a live ambiguity in interpretation | Low-Medium. Dogri बच्चे is plain and covers both senses; translator note needed flagging the literal/metaphorical ambiguity so Phase 2 does not force a single reading. |
| walking περιπατοῦντας (περιπατέω) peripatountas ”to walk about, go on foot” | Metaphor for habitual conduct/lifestyle walking, living, conducting themselves | Ongoing, observable, lived-out fidelity to Christian truth — a whole-life pattern, not a single act | Low. Standard idiom; render with a Dogri verb of habitual conduct (चलना/जीणा), not a literal “walking” verb alone — must read as lifestyle, not locomotion. |
| truth ἀληθείᾳ (ἀλήθεια) alētheia ”unhiddenness, that which is not concealed” | Factual accuracy; personal reliability/faithfulness; the body of apostolic revelation about Christ; moral integrity truth, truthfulness, reality | The apostolic gospel content AND a life lived in conformity to it — 2 John’s central term, occurring 5x in vv.1–4 alone | High. See full glossary entry — must not be rendered with सत्य, which carries a competing Vedantic “Ultimate Reality/impersonal absolute” sense. Propose सच्चाई. |
| commandment ἐντολὴν (ἐντολή) entolēn ”injunction, charge, order” | A specific directive; the whole body of Christ’s/God’s ethical instruction commandment, instruction, charge | Received directly “from the Father” — divine, not humanly negotiated, directive; anticipates vv.5–6’s commandment to love | Medium. See glossary — propose हुकम over धरम (Dogra Rajput lineage-duty risk, already flagged in the baseline for νόμος). |
| Father πατρός (πατήρ) patros ”father” | Biological father; God as Father Father | God the Father as the source and giver of the commandment | Critical (reuse baseline). पिता — reuse exactly per baseline father entry. |
Verse-level note: This verse establishes the letter’s core pairing — truth (right belief) is inseparable from walking (right conduct). Any Dogri rendering that separates “believing truth” from “living truth” into two unrelated ideas will weaken the letter’s central argument.
2 John 1:5
English (ESV): “And now I ask you, dear lady — not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning — that we love one another.”
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| I ask/entreat ἐρωτῶ (ἐρωτάω) erōtō ”to ask, request, entreat” | Formal request among equals/from an authority figure; distinct from αἰτέω (to ask for a thing) ask, beg, entreat, urge | The elder’s pastoral tone — authoritative yet warm, an appeal rather than a bare command | Low. बिनती करना (entreaty) fits, paralleling baseline’s context-sensitive treatment of exhort/παρακαλέω. |
| dear lady κυρία kyria ”lady, mistress” (feminine form of κύριος, “lord/master”) | Polite/honorific address to a woman; possibly a personal name (Kyria) or a personification of a local church lady, madam, Kyria (as proper name) | Addressee of the letter — either an individual householder-patron of a house-church or the church personified as a woman/mother figure | Medium. Propose आदरणीय बीबी. Translator note required: κυρία shares its root with κύριος (Lord, baseline प्रभु) but must never be rendered with प्रभु or any term evoking deity/lordship — this is a purely social honorific for a woman, not a divine title. |
| new commandment ἐντολὴν καινὴν entolēn kainēn ”a fresh/previously unknown commandment” | A commandment not previously given, as opposed to one long-standing new commandment, new rule | The elder explicitly denies novelty — love for one another is not a new teaching but the church’s founding instruction | Medium. See ἐντολή above; काईं (new) + हुकम is straightforward, low ambiguity once हुकम is fixed. |
| from the beginning ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς ap’ archēs ”from the origin/start” | The start of the readers’ Christian instruction; the start of Jesus’ ministry/apostolic proclamation from the beginning, from the first | Emphasizes continuity and non-innovation — a key rhetorical move against the “progressive” deceivers of v.9 | Medium. Render literally, शुरू थमां; must retain the contrast with “new” so the doctrinal argument (continuity vs. innovation) survives translation. |
| love one another ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους agapōmen allēlous ”let us love one another” (subjunctive, hortatory) | Mutual, reciprocal love within the believing community love one another, love each other | The concrete content of “the commandment” — communal, self-giving love among believers, grounding vv.6–11’s warning about withholding hospitality from false teachers | High. See ἀγάπη full entry below. |
2 John 1:6
English (ESV): “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.”
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| love ἀγάπη agapē ”selfless, deliberate love” | Divine, covenantal, willed love — distinct from ἔρως (romantic) and φιλία (friendship-affection) love, charity | Love is defined here not as sentiment but as obedient walking — love and obedience to Christ’s commandments are made identical | High. Propose प्रेम. Must not collapse into भक्ति (shrine-devotional love) or a purely emotional/romantic register. |
| walk according to περιπατῶμεν κατὰ peripatōmen kata ”to walk in conformity with/according to” | Habitual conduct measured against a standard walk according to, live in accordance with | Reinforces v.4’s walking-in-truth theme: love is measured by conformity to Christ’s commandments, not by feeling | Low. As in v.4; ensure consistent Dogri verb choice for περιπατέω across the whole letter. |
| his commandments τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ tas entolas autou ”the commandments of him [Christ]“ | The body of Christ’s ethical instruction, plural his commandments, his instructions | Christ (not merely the Father, cf. v.4) is now the source of the commandments — a subtle Christological claim | Medium. Same हुकम term, plural form; the shift in referent (Father → Christ) should be preserved, not smoothed over, since it quietly affirms Christ’s divine authority to command. |
2 John 1:7
English (ESV): “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.”
This is the doctrinal hinge verse of 2 John — the letter’s central warning against denial of the Incarnation.
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| deceivers πλάνοι (πλάνος) planoi ”wanderers, those who lead astray” (from πλανάω, to wander/roam/mislead) | Those who cause others to err; false teachers; wandering charlatans deceivers, impostors, seducers (archaic) | False teachers actively propagating a docetic/Gnostic-leaning denial of Christ’s true humanity | High. Propose भरमाने वाला (“one who causes delusion/wandering”), a strong natural fit to πλάνος’s root sense. Must connote active, culpable misleading, not innocent error. |
| gone out ἐξῆλθον (ἐξέρχομαι) exēlthon ”went out, departed” | Departure from a community/fellowship; also used of demonic/spiritual departure elsewhere in Johannine writings (cf. 1 John 2:19) went out, have gone out | These deceivers previously had some association with the believing community and departed from sound teaching | Low. निकल गे (went out); straightforward. |
| world κόσμον (κόσμος) kosmon ”ordered system, the created/human world” | The physical creation; humanity in general; the God-opposed human system/order world, earth, humanity, worldly system | The sphere of unbelief and opposition to God into which the deceivers have gone to spread false teaching | Medium-High. Propose दुनिया. Must NOT use संसार, which carries the strong Hindu/Buddhist connotation of the cyclical, illusory (māyā) round of rebirth — a fundamentally different concept from κόσμος as the (real, created, but morally fallen) human sphere. |
| confess ὁμολογοῦντες (ὁμολογέω) homologountes ”to say the same thing, agree, acknowledge openly” | Public acknowledgment/affirmation of a truth claim; the opposite of denial confess, acknowledge, admit, profess | Public, verbal affirmation that Jesus Christ came in the flesh — the confessional boundary-marker of authentic Christian faith in this letter | High. Propose मन्नना (to acknowledge/confess as true). Distinct from a weaker “say” (कहणा); must carry the sense of formal doctrinal affirmation, paralleling the weight the baseline places on the Romans 10:9 Lordship confession. |
| Jesus Christ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν Iēsoun Christon proper name + title | — Jesus Christ | The specific historical person confessed | Critical (reuse baseline). यीशु मसीह — reuse exactly. |
| coming in the flesh ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί erchomenon en sarki ”coming/who comes in flesh” (present participle) | The Son’s real, bodily, human coming/appearing; the doctrinal core of the Incarnation come in the flesh, came in the flesh, has come in human form | States the very doctrine the baseline flags as the single highest-salience risk in the Dogri context — the eternal Son’s real, permanent human nature, as opposed to a temporary or illusory appearance | Critical (reuse baseline exactly). NEVER अवतार. This verse is 2 John’s direct occasion for that baseline warning: denying Christ’s real coming in flesh is precisely the false teaching this letter opposes, and अवतार-language would (catastrophically) align the false teachers’ own theology with the local devotional category the baseline already forbids. |
| the deceiver and the antichrist ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος ho planos kai ho antichristos ”the deceiver and the antichrist” | A summary title identifying anyone (or any spirit) who denies the Incarnation as belonging to this category the deceiver and the antichrist, that deceiver, the Antichrist | Identifies denial of the Incarnation as itself the defining mark of antichrist — not a single end-times figure only, but any such teacher/teaching in any age | Critical (new term). Propose मसीह-बिरोधी for ἀντίχριστος (transliteration मसीह-विरोधी also acceptable), reusing भरमाने वाला for πλάνος. This term must be tightly bound in translator notes to the Incarnation doctrine — antichrist is defined here Christologically, not merely as “a very bad end-times enemy,” which is the likely folk-default reading. |
2 John 1:8
English (ESV): “Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.”
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| watch yourselves βλέπετε ἑαυτούς blepete heautous ”look at/watch yourselves” | Self-vigilance; guarding against spiritual danger watch yourselves, be on your guard, take heed | An urgent imperative to spiritual vigilance in the face of the deceivers just described | Low. |
| lose ἀπολέσητε (ἀπόλλυμι) apolesēte ”to destroy, lose, ruin” | Loss of a possession; spiritual ruin/perishing lose, destroy, forfeit | Risk of forfeiting the fruit of prior faithful ministry/discipleship by yielding to false teaching | Low-Medium. गवाना (to lose); ensure it doesn’t read as accidental misplacing but as a serious forfeiture. |
| worked for εἰργασάμεθα (ἐργάζομαι) eirgasametha ”we have worked, labored, accomplished” | Effortful labor/accomplishment worked for, labored for, accomplished | The elder’s (and the community’s) prior gospel labor among these readers | Low. कम्म कीता (have worked); reuse the कम्म register established for “work/labor” contexts, avoiding कर्म. |
| full reward μισθὸν πλήρη misthon plērē ”a full/complete wage or reward” | A worker’s wage; a granted recompense (often eschatological in NT usage) full reward, complete reward, full wages | The eschatological reward for perseverance in truth — NOT a payment earned by human merit, but the outcome of faithful abiding (v.9) | High. Propose पूरा इनाम. Do NOT use फल (fruit/result) here — फल risks evoking कर्म-फल (karma-phal), the Hindu doctrine of the deterministic “fruit” of one’s actions shaping future rebirth, an entirely different moral-metaphysical mechanism than the gracious eschatological reward in view here. |
2 John 1:9
English (ESV): “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
This is the core “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ” verse.
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| goes on ahead / goes beyond προάγων (προάγω) proagōn ”to go before, go ahead of, lead forward” | Progressing beyond a fixed point; used here of transgressing beyond apostolic teaching under a claim of spiritual advancement goes on ahead, goes beyond, transgresses, does not continue | Names the false teachers’ self-justifying claim to a more “advanced” spiritual insight — an early form of the “progressive revelation beyond Christ” error | High. Propose अग्गे लंघ जाणा (“to cross/go ahead beyond”). Must be framed explicitly as departure/transgression, not authentic spiritual growth — the term must not be allowed to echo positive regional narratives of spiritual advancement/attainment (e.g., progression toward moksha through successive stages of practice). |
| abide/remain μένων (μένω) menōn ”to stay, remain, continue, dwell” | Physical remaining in a place; continuing in a state/relationship; persevering loyalty; (in John’s writings) intimate, abiding relational union abide, remain, continue, dwell in | Persevering, ongoing fidelity to apostolic teaching about Christ — the letter’s central positive virtue, contrasted with “going on ahead” | High (new term, central to the doctrine). Propose बणे रौना. Must NOT be rendered with a term suggesting a static meditative/mystical “abiding state” (e.g., a yogic sthiti of inner absorption); this is relational, doctrinal perseverance in a specific body of teaching about a specific person, not a contentless inner stillness. |
| teaching of Christ τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ tē didachē tou Christou ”the teaching/doctrine of Christ” | The body of authoritative instruction originating from and about Christ the teaching of Christ, Christ’s doctrine | The specific, bounded, apostolic body of teaching about who Christ is (v.7) and what he commands (vv.5–6) — not teaching in general | High (new term). Critical translator caution: do NOT use सिख for “teaching” — सिख is a dangerous homograph/near-homophone with “Sikh,” the name of the major religious community centered in neighboring Punjab; “the teaching of Christ” must never risk being misread or mis-heard as referencing that community. शिक्षा is the safer formal term. Also avoid गुरमत/गुरु-ग्यान framing, which would place Christ’s teaching as one guru’s instruction among the region’s many venerated teachers. |
| does not have God θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει theon ouk echei ”does not have God” | Lacking a genuine relationship with/possession of God does not have God, is without God | A severe verdict: departing from Christ’s teaching is not a minor doctrinal variance but loss of relationship with God himself | Critical (reuse baseline god). परमेश्वर — reuse exactly; ensure the verdict’s severity is not softened in translation. |
| has both the Father and the Son τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει ton patera kai ton huion echei ”has the Father and the Son” | Possessing a genuine relationship with both persons has the Father and the Son | Perseverance in Christ’s teaching secures relationship with both the Father and the Son — a strong Trinitarian/Christological statement embedded in a pastoral warning | Critical (reuse baseline). (Son of God doctrine) — reuse baseline forms; this verse directly invokes the baseline’s sonship_of_christ Critical doctrine. |
2 John 1:10
Greek: εἴ τις ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει, μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν καὶ χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε· English (ESV): “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting.”
This is the core “Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment” verse — the letter’s most culturally sensitive instruction.
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| comes to you ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς erchetai pros hymas ”comes to you” | Arrival of a traveling teacher, common in the itinerant-teacher culture of the early church comes to you, visits you | Reflects the real practice of traveling teachers depending on host congregations/households for support and a base of ministry | Low. Straightforward. |
| does not bring this teaching ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει tautēn tēn didachēn ou pherei ”does not carry/bring this teaching” | Failing to hold to or transmit the apostolic teaching just described (vv.7,9) does not bring/hold this teaching | The single doctrinal test governing the hospitality instruction that follows — this is not xenophobia but doctrinal discernment | High. Same शिक्षा term as v.9; consistency is essential across vv.9–10. |
| do not receive him into your house μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν mē lambanete auton eis oikian ”do not take/receive him into a house” | Formal hospitality — lodging, provision, and by extension, a public gesture of endorsement and support for an itinerant teacher’s ministry do not receive him into your house, do not welcome him into your home, do not take him in | Refusing the specific act of hosting/sponsoring a teacher whose ministry would (given the household as a base of operations) spread the false teaching further | High/Culturally Critical. Propose घर च नेईं लैणा (do not take/receive into the house). Major cultural collision: North Indian, and specifically Duggar-region, culture holds “Atithi Devo Bhava” (अतिथि देवो भव — “the guest is to be honored as God”) as a deeply rooted hospitality value, reinforced further by Dogra Rajput izzat (honor) culture’s strong norms of hospitality toward any visitor. This verse commands a deliberate, doctrinally-motivated exception to that norm for a specific class of visitor (false teachers of the Incarnation). Translator notes and companion catechetical material must make clear this is not a general license for inhospitality, but a narrow, doctrine-specific boundary tied to the confession of v.7 — otherwise Dogri readers may either (a) reject the instruction as culturally unthinkable, or (b) over-apply it as generalized suspicion of strangers. |
| give him any greeting χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε chairein autō mē legete ”do not say ‘rejoice/greetings’ to him” | A standard Greco-Roman epistolary/verbal greeting formula (literally “to rejoice”), functioning like a formal blessing or well-wish exchanged on meeting do not greet him, do not wish him well, do not bid him godspeed (KJV) | Withholding the customary verbal blessing/endorsement extended to a fellow teacher — a public, social signal of non-endorsement, not personal rudeness | High/Culturally Critical. Propose खुशी दी दुआ नेईं देणी (do not give a well-wish/blessing of joy). Same collision as above: greeting rituals in Dogri/North Indian culture (namaskar, blessing formulas, touching feet of an elder/teacher) carry serious social and honor weight; withholding them is a strong, doctrinally loaded act that must be explained, not softened into mere social awkwardness. |
2 John 1:11
English (ESV): “For whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| greets him λέγων … αὐτῷ χαίρειν legōn autō chairein ”saying to him, rejoice” | Same greeting formula as v.10 greets him, wishes him well | Extending the customary greeting is treated as an act with moral consequence, not a neutral courtesy | High. Same term as v.10; consistency required. |
| takes part in / shares in κοινωνεῖ (κοινωνέω) koinōnei ”to share, participate, have fellowship/partnership with” | Positive: shared participation in Christ, in the gospel, in suffering; negative (as here): moral partnership/complicity in another’s wrongdoing takes part in, shares in, becomes a partner in, participates in, has fellowship with | Extending hospitality/greeting to a teacher who denies the Incarnation makes the host a moral participant in that false teaching’s spread — a startlingly strong statement of corporate responsibility | High (distinct from baseline κοινωνία). Propose साझा करना (to share/partake in) for this negative sense. Critical translator caution: the baseline reserves संगत (from κοινωνία) for the positive doctrine of Christian fellowship/shared participation in Christ (fellowship, Low risk in Romans). Using संगत here — for sharing in someone’s evil works — would badly confuse that established positive term. This verse requires a different Dogri word for the same underlying Greek root, and this distinction must be recorded explicitly in translation memory so Phase 2 does not default to संगत by pattern-matching on “fellowship/participate.” |
| his wicked works τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῖς τοῖς πονηροῖς tois ergois autou tois ponērois ”his evil/wicked works” | Morally evil deeds/actions wicked works, evil deeds, wicked deeds | The false teacher’s ongoing work of spreading denial of the Incarnation is named, bluntly, as morally evil | High. Propose बुरे कम्म. NEVER use कर्म (karma) for ἔργα here — कर्म carries the entire Hindu doctrinal freight of action-generating-destiny/rebirth, a wholly different framework from the biblical category of morally culpable deeds. कम्म (plain Dogri “work/deed,” already used safely in the baseline for प्रचार दा कम्म) is the safe register. |
Remainder of the Book: 2 John 1:1–3 and 1:12–13
Since 2 John consists of only one chapter, full-book coverage requires treating the verses outside the core passage with the same term-level rigor.
2 John 1:1–2
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| the elder Ὁ πρεσβύτερος ho presbyteros ”the older man, the elder” | An age-based term of respect; an official church office (overseer/pastor); here the author’s self-designation the elder, the presbyter | The author identifies himself by pastoral office/seniority rather than by name — traditionally understood as the Apostle John writing in his role as a recognized church elder | Medium (new term). Must be distinguished from a village panchayat elder/headman (a customary secular-legal authority figure in Dogra rural society) — this is a spiritual-pastoral office, not a civic one. |
| elect lady ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ eklektē kyria ”chosen/elect lady” | Either an individual Christian woman (a literal addressee) or a personification of a local church (a common epistolary device) elect lady, chosen lady, “Kyria” (as a proper name) | The letter’s addressee; the ambiguity (individual vs. congregation) is a known, longstanding interpretive question and should not be forced to a single resolution in translation | Medium. See κυρία note in v.5 above regarding the κύριος/Lord etymological-collision risk. |
| whom I love οὺς ἐγὼ ἀγαπῶ hous egō agapō ”whom I love” | See ἀγάπη below whom I love | The elder’s pastoral, non-romantic affection for the addressee(s), grounded specifically “in truth” | High. See full ἀγάπη entry below (v.6 and glossary). |
| in truth ἐν ἀληθείᾳ en alētheia ”in truth” | A love that is genuine, and/or a love exercised within the shared bond of the apostolic truth-content in truth, truly, in the truth | Governs the whole letter’s opening — love and truth are bound together from the very first sentence | High. See ἀλήθεια full entry below. |
| known the truth ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν egnōkotes tēn alētheian ”having come to know the truth” (perfect participle — a settled, abiding knowledge) | Personal, relational knowledge (γινώσκω) rather than mere intellectual data who have known the truth, who know the truth | All genuine believers — not the elder alone — share this settled knowledge; a note of catholicity/community | High. Same ἀλήθεια term; γινώσκω itself (relational knowing) is a minor secondary term — Low separate risk, render with a standard Dogri verb of personal/experiential knowing (जाणना), not mere factual awareness. |
| abiding in us μένουσαν ἐν ἡμῖν menousan en hēmin ”remaining/abiding in us” | See μένω above abiding in us, dwelling in us, remains in us | The truth is not simply known once but continually indwells the believing community — an early instance of the letter’s key μένω motif | High. Same बणे रौना term as v.9; consistency across the whole letter is essential since μένω is the letter’s structural keyword (used of truth, of teaching, and of relationship with Father/Son). |
| forever εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα eis ton aiōna ”into the age, forever” | Unending duration; eschatological permanence forever, to eternity, unto the age | The truth’s abiding is not provisional but permanent, unlike a temporary religious observance or a periodically-renewed shrine vow | Low-Medium. सदा/हमेशा आस्तै; ensure it doesn’t collapse into a cyclical-time framing (avoid any phrase suggestive of recurring ages/yugas). |
2 John 1:3
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| grace χάρις charis ”favor, gift” | See baseline grace | Unmerited divine favor, given jointly by the Father and the Son | Critical (reuse baseline exactly). |
| mercy ἔλεος eleos ”compassion, pity shown to the needy/guilty” | Compassionate response to human need or guilt; distinct from χάρις (favor toward the unworthy in general) in that ἔλεος emphasizes compassion toward suffering/distress specifically mercy, compassion, pity | God’s compassionate disposition toward believers, named alongside but distinct from grace | Medium-High (new term — important internal consistency issue). Propose करुणा. Translator note required: the baseline’s Dogri rendering of grace (बिना कमाई दित्ती दया) already uses दया as its core word; ἔλεος here needs its own distinct word so that “grace, mercy, peace” does not collapse into a repetitive or confusing “favor-without-earning, favor, peace” triad. करुणा (compassion) is proposed, with the minor secondary risk that करुणा carries a Buddhist/Jain ethical-virtue association (compassion as a cardinal practice) — acceptable here since the sense required (God’s compassionate disposition) is compatible, but this should be confirmed against the BSI Dogri Bible if available. |
| peace εἰρήνη eirēnē ”peace” | See baseline peace | Reuse baseline sense — relational peace with God | Medium (reuse baseline exactly). |
| God the Father θεοῦ πατρός theou patros ”of God the Father” | — God the Father | Source of grace, mercy, and peace | Critical (reuse baseline). |
| Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός Iēsou Christou tou huiou tou patros ”of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father” | — Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father | A compact statement of the sonship_of_christ Critical doctrine — Christ is named, alongside the Father, as co-source of grace, mercy, and peace, a strong implicit claim to full deity | Critical (reuse baseline). |
| in truth and love ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ en alētheia kai agapē ”in truth and love” | — in truth and love | Names the two governing themes of the entire letter in a single closing phrase of the greeting | High. Same सच्चाई and प्रेम terms as elsewhere; this phrase functions almost as the letter’s thesis statement and should be rendered identically wherever it recurs in derivative curriculum materials. |
2 John 1:12–13
| Terms | Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Dogri Rendering Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| paper and ink χάρτου καὶ μέλανος chartou kai melanos ”papyrus and ink” | Concrete writing materials paper and ink | A simple, low-risk material detail; underscores the elder’s preference for face-to-face fellowship over a letter | Low. |
| mouth to mouth στόμα πρὸς στόμα stoma pros stoma ”mouth to mouth” | Idiom for direct, face-to-face conversation face to face, mouth to mouth | Personal presence and spoken fellowship are valued above written correspondence alone | Low. Render idiomatically as “आमने-सामने” (face to face); a literal “mouth to mouth” translation would be misleading in Dogri. |
| our joy may be complete/full ἡ χαρὰ ἡμῶν πεπληρωμένη ἦ hē chara hēmōn peplērōmenē ē ”that our joy may be [in a state of having been] fulfilled” | Joy brought to its full, intended measure that our joy may be complete/full | The relational goal of the whole letter — restored, unhindered fellowship producing complete joy | Low-Medium. खुशी + पूरी होणी; standard vocabulary, minor risk only in ensuring “complete” isn’t read as merely “a lot” but as “brought to its full/intended measure.” |
| the children of your elect sister τὰ τέκνα τῆς ἀδελφῆς σου τῆς ἐκλεκτῆς ta tekna tēs adelphēs sou tēs eklektēs ”the children of your chosen/elect sister” | Closing greeting from a related household/congregation the children of your elect sister | A closing personal/ecclesial greeting, mirroring the opening address structurally | Low-Medium. Same बच्चे, चुणी गेई, and बहण terms as established elsewhere; no new doctrinal content, but consistency with vv.1 and 4 renderings of “children” and “elect” is required. |
Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Statement
2 John is a single-chapter epistle (13 verses total). The verse-by-verse treatment above (covering 1:1–13 in full — the core passage 1:4–11 in maximal depth, and the surrounding verses 1:1–3 and 1:12–13 immediately following) therefore constitutes complete, first-verse-to-last-verse coverage of the entire book. There is no Chapter 2 or beyond to analyze. This is stated explicitly here to satisfy the full-book-coverage mandate transparently: 2 John, Chapter 1 (the whole book): fully analyzed above, verse by verse, with no omissions.
