Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: justiça
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: mérito conquistado por esforço moral próprio
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Suffering
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. CRITICAL EXTENSION: 1 Peter 3:14 (‘sofrer por causa da justiça’) activates a distinct ethical-conduct sense of δικαιοσύνη — righteous living that provokes hostility — layered onto the same Portuguese word used for the forensic imputed-righteousness sense in Romans 3-5. Every occurrence in a suffering context requires an explicit semantic-range flag so translators trained on the Romans package do not default to the forensic gloss.
Salvation
Approved rendering: salvação
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. In 1 Peter, the eschatological deliverance ready to be revealed (1:5), the τέλος/outcome of faith (1:9), and the goal of spiritual growth (2:2). Never reframed as gradual evolution across reincarnations.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ressurreição
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: reencarnação
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. NEVER reencarnação. Anchors the core passage: ‘mediante a ressurreição de Jesus Cristo dentre os mortos’ (1:3); recurs in the baptism-antitype passage (3:21).
Lord
Approved rendering: Senhor
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. In 1 Peter, forms the compound instruction ‘santificai a Cristo como Senhor’ (3:15), the letter’s own confessional peak, and is guarded against elder-domineering language (5:3) which must never share this title.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messias
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. 1 Peter primarily renders Χριστός as the proper title ‘Cristo’ (see new term christ) rather than deploying ‘Messias’ as a stand-alone title, but the underlying doctrine — the unique, eternally divine Anointed One, not Kardecism’s ‘most evolved spirit’ — governs both terms identically.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Jesus
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. The risk is theological content around the name (see christ, lord, resurrection), not the name form itself.
God
Approved rendering: Deus
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. 1 Peter 1:3 opens with the doxological ‘Bendito o Deus e Pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.’ Pastoral awareness note retained: Candomblé/Umbanda orixás syncretized with Catholic saints can blur exclusive monotheism if not addressed directly.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Espírito Santo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: espíritos guias ou mentores espirituais (espiritismo), orixás e guias (Candomblé/Umbanda)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. 1 Peter 1:2 (sanctifying work), 1:11-12 (inspiring the prophets), 4:14 (resting on the persecuted). Must be explicitly distinguished from Kardecist and Candomblé/Umbanda spirit-guide frameworks, as in the baseline.
Father
Approved rendering: Pai
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. 1 Peter 1:2, 1:3, 1:17 (reverent fear of the Father who judges impartially).
Christ
Approved rendering: Cristo
Transliteration: Christos
Doctrine: Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: o espírito mais evoluído (leitura cristológica espírita)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Used throughout 1 Peter as Jesus’ proper title (1:11, 1:19, 2:21, 3:18, 4:1, 4:13, 5:1), tying to the Messianic promise fulfilled exclusively in him. Must not be softened toward Kardecism’s Christology of Jesus as a supremely advanced spirit among others.
Sanctify Christ As Lord
Approved rendering: santificai a Cristo como Senhor
Transliteration: hagiasate kyrion ton Christon
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: ato ritual externo sem entronização interior
Category: Christology
Romans 1 Peter 3:15 — to set apart and revere Christ supremely as Lord within the heart amid suffering. Combines ‘santo’/‘santificação’ and ‘Senhor’; must convey inward enthronement, not a ritual act.
Christ Suffered For You
Approved rendering: Cristo sofreu por vós
Transliteration: Christos epathen hyper hymōn
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Category: Suffering
1 Peter 2:21. Must convey actual vicarious atonement, not merely Christ as a moral exemplar of endurance, a reading Kardecist Christology could otherwise readily absorb.
He Bore Our Sins
Approved rendering: levou os nossos pecados
Transliteration: anēnegken tas hamartias hēmōn
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Category: Suffering
1 Peter 2:24, echoing Isaiah 53. Substitutionary bearing of sin’s guilt and penalty; ties directly to ‘pecado’ and ‘justiça.‘
Redeemed
Approved rendering: resgatados / redimidos
Transliteration: lytroō
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: libertação espiritual genérica e autodirigida
Original: λυτρόω
Category: Suffering
1 Peter 1:18-19. Ransomed by the price of Christ’s precious blood, not silver or gold; must retain the blood-price sense against a generic-liberation gloss.
Lamb Without Blemish
Approved rendering: cordeiro sem mácula e sem defeito
Transliteration: amnos amōmos kai aspilos
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Category: Suffering
1 Peter 1:19. Passover/Isaiah 53 sacrificial-purity imagery; requires Old Testament sacrificial background teaching.
Sprinkling Of The Blood
Approved rendering: aspersão do sangue
Transliteration: rhantismos haimatos
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: purificação ritual meramente simbólica
Original: ῥαντισμὸς αἵματος
Category: Suffering
1 Peter 1:2, echoing Exodus 24. Christ’s atoning blood applied to believers, ratifying the new covenant; must not be flattened to symbolic ritual purification.
Suffering For Righteousness Sake
Approved rendering: sofrer por causa da justiça
Transliteration: paschontes dia dikaiosynēn
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Original: πάσχοντες διὰ δικαιοσύνην
Category: Suffering
1 Peter 3:14. Suffering resulting from righteous conduct provoking hostility; requires an explicit semantic-range note distinguishing this ethical-conduct sense from Romans’ forensic imputed righteousness.
Regeneration
Approved rendering: regeneração / regenerar
Transliteration: anagennaō
Doctrine: The New Birth (Regeneration)
Rejected alternatives: renascimento (termo cotidiano espírita para reencarnação)
Original: ἀναγεννάω
Category: Salvation
1 Peter 1:3, 1:23. God’s decisive, one-time act of birthing believers into new spiritual life. NEVER use ‘renascimento’ as primary gloss, since Kardecist Spiritism uses it as a standard synonym for reincarnation. Pair with explicit teaching that this is single, decisive, non-repeating.
Clothe Yourselves With Humility
Approved rendering: revesti-vos de humildade
Transliteration: tapeinophrosynēn enkombōsasthe
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε
Category: Leadership
1 Peter 5:5. Vivid slave’s-apron imagery; elevated to Critical given explicit curriculum doctrine emphasis. Must retain the active, visible, self-humbling service image.
Adversary The Devil
Approved rendering: adversário, o diabo
Transliteration: antidikos diabolos
Doctrine: The Reality and Defeat of the Devil
