Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 1 Timothy | Portuguese Destination Language Package
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from all six chapters of 1 Timothy. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json reuse the recorded Portuguese rendering exactly and are marked “[Reused].” New terms introduced by 1 Timothy are assessed using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework established in the baseline.
Risk tier definitions (per baseline convention):
- Critical — mistranslation destroys or alters essential doctrine; mandatory human theologian review.
- High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk; human theologian review required.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding; automated review sufficient.
Section A — Terms Reused Exactly from the Romans Baseline

Section B — New Critical-Risk Terms Introduced by 1 Timothy
| English Term | Greek (Translit.) | Portuguese Rendering | Doctrine Category | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| overseer / bishop | ἐπίσκοπος (episkopos) | bispo | Qualifications for Church Leadership | ”supervisor” (loses Almeida-tradition continuity); unqualified “bispo” without clarifying note | Two grounded Brazilian collisions: Roman Catholic diocesan hierarchy, and the Neo-Pentecostal celebrity “Bispo” title (e.g., IURD) associated with the exact “godliness as gain” pattern condemned in 6:5. Mandatory translator note every occurrence. |
| mystery | μυστήριον (mystērion) | mistério | Sound Doctrine / Church as Pillar of Truth | ”segredo” (loses “now revealed” nuance); unclarified “mistério” | Near-verbatim overlap with the Catholic Mass response “Mistério da fé!” (Mysterium fidei); also collides with Kardecist/esoteric notions of hidden knowledge for initiates. Paul’s μυστήριον is publicly revealed, not esoteric or liturgically re-enacted. Mandatory note at every occurrence (3:9; 3:16). |
| mediator | μεσίτης (mesitēs) | mediador | Christ as the One Mediator | ”intercessor” (blurs distinct roles); unqualified “mediador” | Direct collision with Roman Catholic Marian title “Mediadora de todas as graças” and with Kardecist mediumship (médium as human intermediary with the dead). 1 Tim 2:5 excludes every rival mediating figure. Mandatory theologian review. |
| deceitful spirits / teachings of demons | πνεύματα πλάνα / διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων (pneumata plana / didaskaliai daimoniōn) | espíritos enganadores / doutrinas de demônios | Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | a vague paraphrase such as “falsas ideias” that drops the explicit “spirits” language | Direct confrontation with Kardecist Spiritism’s mediumistic communication with “espíritos” and with Candomblé/Umbanda spirit-incorporation practice — both mainstream, organized Brazilian religious frameworks, not marginal folk belief. Must retain explicit “espíritos” language; mandatory theologian review. |
| godliness (combined with “mystery,” 3:16) | τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον (to tēs eusebeias mystērion) | o mistério da piedade | Church as Pillar of Truth / Christ’s Person | any rendering that drops either component term | Combines two independently Critical/High-flagged terms; requires the strongest available translator note, introducing the Christological hymn of 3:16. |
| manifested in the flesh | ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί (ephanerōthē en sarki) | manifestou-se na carne | Christ as the One Mediator (Incarnation) | any phrase using “encarnação/encarnou” without the baseline’s mandatory Kardecist-distinguishing note | Engages the Romans baseline’s Critical incarnation doctrine and its forbidden-substitution rule (never “reencarnação”; “encarnação” only with clarifying note). Same doctrinal referent as John 1:14 though different Greek verb. |
| godliness is a means of gain / godliness with contentment is great gain | πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν / πορισμὸς μέγας ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐτάρκειας (porismon einai tēn eusebeian / porismos megas hē eusebeia meta autarkeias) | a piedade é fonte de lucro / a piedade com contentamento é grande fonte de lucro | Godliness and Contentment | any rendering that loses the ironic “gain/lucro” word-repetition linking 6:5 and 6:6 | Directly and specifically confronts contemporary Brazilian prosperity-gospel teaching that ties visible piety/giving to material wealth. The single most acute, directly applicable verse pair in the letter for this destination culture. Mandatory theologian review. |
| love of money is a root of all evils | ῥίζα πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστὶν ἡ φιλαργυρία (rhiza pantōn tōn kakōn estin hē philargyria) | o amor ao dinheiro é raiz de todos os males | Godliness and Contentment | ”a única raiz de todo o mal” (overclaims the indefinite Greek article) | Central maxim of the letter’s economic ethic; must stay lexically consistent with ἀφιλάργυρος (3:3) and αἰσχροκερδής (3:8). Note the indefinite “a root” (not “the root”) to avoid overclaiming without softening the warning’s force. |
| King of kings and Lord of lords | βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων (basileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn) | Rei dos reis e Senhor dos senhores | Christ as the One Mediator / Lordship of Christ | any diminished or partial-supremacy phrasing | Directly reinforces the Romans baseline’s Critical Lordship-of-Christ doctrine with maximal doxological force; render without qualification. |
| pursue righteousness, godliness, faith… (6:11) | δίωκε δικαιοσύνην, εὐσέβειαν, πίστιν… (diōke dikaiosynēn, eusebeian, pistin…) | busca a justiça, a piedade, a fé… | Godliness and Contentment / Sound Doctrine | conflating this ethical-pursuit sense of δικαιοσύνη with the forensic-justification sense elsewhere in the curriculum | Risk of confusing the Romans baseline’s Critical forensic “justiça” (received by faith, not pursued by effort) with this distinct ethical-virtue usage. Context must carry the distinction; mandatory theologian review. |
| saved through childbearing | σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας (sōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias) | será salva mediante a maternidade | Sound Doctrine / Salvation | any phrasing implying childbearing is meritorious toward justification | Must never contradict the baseline’s Critical justification-by-faith-alone doctrine. Mandatory theologian review and mandatory teaching note in every occurrence. |
| guard the deposit | τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον (tēn parathēkēn phylaxon) | guarda o depósito (que te foi confiado) | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | ”guarda o teu conhecimento espiritual” (opens door to ongoing/private revelation) | Anchor text for the letter’s guardianship theme (with 1:11’s ἐπιστεύθην); quietly but really relevant against Kardecism’s claim to ongoing mediumistic revelation (psicografia), already flagged Critical/High in the Romans baseline’s “inspiration_of_scripture” doctrine. |
Section C — New High-Risk Terms Introduced by 1 Timothy
| English Term | Greek (Translit.) | Portuguese Rendering | Doctrine Category | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| office of overseer/bishop | ἐπισκοπή (episkopē) | episcopado | Qualifications for Church Leadership | ”posição de bispo” (loses formal register) | The task/office distinct from the office-holder (see ἐπίσκοπος above); same institutional-hierarchy caution applies. |
| elder (church office) | πρεσβύτερος, technical sense (presbyteros) | presbítero | Qualifications for Church Leadership | ”ancião” as primary rendering (collides with the well-known Jehovah’s Witnesses congregational-elder title in Brazil) | Context-sensitive: same Greek word is generic “older person” in 5:1-2 (render “mais velho/mais velhas”) vs. technical office in 5:17,19 (render “presbítero”). Also proximate to, but must be distinguished from, the Catholic sacramental priesthood. |
| deacon | διάκονος (diakonos) | diácono | Qualifications for Church Leadership | unqualified “diácono” without clarifying note | Must be distinguished from the Roman Catholic sacramental diaconate (a clerical order within priestly ordination); NT διάκονος is a tested, functional service office. |
| godliness | εὐσέβεια (eusebeia) | piedade | Godliness and Contentment (central term) | “religiosidade” (too generic); “devoção” (loses reverence-toward-God specificity) | Most frequent positive character-term in the letter (2:2; 3:16; 4:7-8; 6:3,5-6,11). Colloquial Portuguese “piedade” primarily means “pity,” a false-friend risk for modern readers. Standing translator note recommended at every occurrence. |
| conscience | συνείδησις (syneidēsis) | consciência | Sound Doctrine / Guarding the Deposit | a rendering implying karmic self-correction across lifetimes | Distinguish from a Kardecist-influenced notion of conscience as a ledger of guilt worked off across successive reincarnations. Occurs 1:5,19; 3:9; 4:2. |
| deposit (entrusted teaching) | παραθήκη (parathēkē) / ἐπιστεύθην word-family (episteuthēn) | depósito / confiado | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | ”revelação contínua” (implies ongoing addition) | See Section B entry on “guard the deposit”; the 1:11 “confiado” and 6:20 “depósito” bookend the letter’s guardianship theme. |
| pillar and buttress of truth | στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας (stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias) | coluna e alicerce da verdade | Church as Pillar of Truth | any phrasing implying the church generates or infallibly guarantees truth by its own institutional authority | Teach as the church upholding/displaying already-revealed truth, not defining it — pastoral caution given proximity to Catholic magisterial-infallibility claims if left unqualified. |
| living God | θεοῦ ζῶντος (theou zōntos) | Deus vivo | Church as Pillar of Truth / Godliness | — | Indirect, non-overstated apologetic contrast with venerated images, ancestors, or discarnate spirits in Brazilian popular religion. |
| laying on of hands | ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν (epithesis tōn cheirōn) | imposição das mãos | Qualifications for Church Leadership / Guarding the Deposit | any description implying transmission of impersonal spiritual “energy/fluído” | Must be distinguished from the Kardecist passe ritual and Umbanda/Candomblé hand-gesture healing practices, both of which involve hand-based transmission of spiritual force. NT laying-on-of-hands is a commissioning/blessing gesture accompanying prayer, not a channel of mystical energy. Occurs 4:14; 5:22. |
| ransom | ἀντίλυτρον (antilytron) | resgate | Christ as the One Mediator | ”resgate espiritual genérico” (loses substitutionary specificity) | Connects to the Romans baseline’s escalation rule for atonement/propitiation language (Rom 3:25); apply the same mandatory-review rule to 1 Tim 2:6. |
| falsely called knowledge | ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις (pseudōnymos gnōsis) | falsamente chamado conhecimento | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | ”sabedoria alternativa” (too neutral, loses the “false” judgment) | Proto-Gnostic warning with quiet relevance to Brazilian esoteric, Theosophical, and Kardecist claims to special channeled or hidden spiritual knowledge. |
| apostasy / departing from the faith | ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως (apostēsontai tines tēs pisteōs) | alguns se afastarão da fé | Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | — | Central term for the doctrine category; introduces ch.4’s warning. |
| honor widows / widow indeed | χήρα, τιμᾶν χήρας τὰς ὄντως χήρας (chēra, timan chēras tas ontōs chēras) | honrar as viúvas, as verdadeiramente viúvas | Care for Widows and the Household of Faith | — | Central term for the doctrine category as named in the curriculum parameters; requires complete (not piecemeal) presentation with the family-responsibility qualifiers of 5:4,8,16. |
| double honor (for elders) | διπλῆς τιμῆς (diplēs timēs) | honra dupla | Qualifications for Church Leadership | any framing that could be cited as scriptural warrant for personal enrichment | Must be taught in tension with, not isolation from, 6:5-10’s condemnation of ministry pursued for financial gain. |
| the man Christ Jesus | ἄνθρωπος Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς (anthrōpos Christos Iēsous) | o homem Cristo Jesus | Christ as the One Mediator | any docetic-leaning softening of “homem” | Reinforces the humanity-of-Christ doctrine as the explicit ground of his unique mediatorial qualification. |
| good confession | καλὴ ὁμολογία (kalē homologia) | boa confissão | Christ as the One Mediator / Lordship of Christ | — | Thematically linked to the Romans baseline’s Critical Lordship-of-Christ confession (Rom 10:9), though distinct vocabulary. |
| taken up in glory (ascension) | ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ (anelēmphthē en doxē) | foi elevado/recebido em glória | Christ as the One Mediator (Christological hymn) | any phrasing echoing gradual Kardecist “elevação espiritual” | Christ’s ascension is a singular, historical, bodily exaltation, not a gradual spiritual ascent achieved across lives. |
Section D — New Medium-Risk Terms Introduced by 1 Timothy
| English Term | Greek (Translit.) | Portuguese Rendering | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| mercy | ἔλεος (eleos) | misericórdia | Distinguish from generic “compaixão universal” or karmic leniency; God’s mercy is personal and received once, in this life. |
| dignity / seriousness | σεμνότης (semnotēs) | dignidade | Prefer over Almeida’s “honestidade,” a false-friend risk in modern Portuguese (reads as “honesty/truthfulness”). Occurs 2:2; 3:4,8,11. |
| husband of one wife | μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα (mias gynaikos andra) | marido de uma só mulher | Genuinely disputed interpretive range (monogamy/fidelity/no-remarriage); render literally, do not disambiguate. 3:2; 3:12; mirrored at 5:9. |
| women (3:11, ambiguous referent) | γυναῖκας (gynaikas) | as mulheres | Ambiguous between deacons’ wives and women deacons; render neutrally, flag for mandatory theologian review, do not resolve via translation choice. |
| exercise authority | αὐθεντεῖν (authentein) | exercer autoridade sobre | Disputed semantic range (neutral authority vs. negative domineering); render conservatively/literally, flag for theologian review, do not resolve the complementarian/egalitarian debate via word choice. |
| Savior (applied to God the Father) | σωτήρ (sōtēr) | Salvador | 1 Timothy applies this title to the Father repeatedly (1:1; 2:3; 4:10), a pattern not present in Romans; note shared divine will of Father and Son, not two rival saviors. |
| truth (object of saving knowledge) | ἀλήθεια (alētheia) | verdade | 2:4; 3:15; ties the universal-salvific-will language to the “Church as Pillar of Truth” doctrine. |
| eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος (zōē aiōnios) | vida eterna | Render identically at 1:16; 6:12; 6:19. |
| household of God / church of the living God | οἶκος θεοῦ / ἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντος (oikos theou / ekklēsia theou zōntos) | casa de Deus / igreja do Deus vivo | 3:15; anchors the “Care for Widows and Household of Faith” and “Church as Pillar of Truth” doctrines together. |
| desire to be rich / snare | βουλόμενοι πλουτεῖν / παγίς (boulomenoi ploutein / pagis) | os que querem enriquecer / laço | 6:9; keep παγίς consistent with 3:7’s “laço do diabo.” |
| slaves under the yoke | δοῦλοι ὑπὸ ζυγόν (douloi hypo zygon) | escravos sob o jugo | 6:1-2; requires the same cultural-sensitivity contextualizing treatment as the Romans baseline’s slavery-history note (largest slaveholding history in the Americas); pastoral, not doctrinal-corruption, risk. |
| steadfastness / gentleness (virtue list) | ὑπομονή / πραϋπαθία (hypomonē / prauïpathia) | perseverança / mansidão | 6:11; part of the virtue list alongside reused Critical/High terms — see Section B note on δικαιοσύνη conflation risk. |
| storing up a good foundation | ἀποθησαυρίζοντας θεμέλιον καλὸν (apothēsaurizontas themelion kalon) | acumulando um bom fundamento | 6:19; same works-vs-grace safeguard as 2:15 and 4:16 — fruit/evidence of salvation, not its means. |
| rich in good works / generous | πλουτεῖν ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς / εὐμεταδότους (ploutein en ergois kalois / eumetadotous) | rico em boas obras / generoso | 6:18; standard stewardship vocabulary. |
| set apart for testing (elders/deacons) | δοκιμάζω (dokimazō) | pôr à prova / examinar | 3:10; structural safeguard for the “Qualifications for Church Leadership” doctrine — must not be weakened to a merely formal “avaliar.” |
| public reading of Scripture | ἀνάγνωσις (anagnōsis) | leitura pública | 4:13; part of the “Public Worship and Prayer” doctrine category. |
| prayer for kings and authorities | βασιλεῖς καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐν ὑπεροχῇ (basileis kai pantes hoi en hyperochē) | reis e todos os que exercem autoridade | 2:2; political-sensitivity flag comparable to the Romans baseline’s government/authority caution. |
| modest apparel / self-control (women’s adornment) | κόσμιος, αἰδώς, σωφροσύνη (kosmios, aidōs, sōphrosynē) | traje decoroso, modéstia, moderação | 2:9; application-sensitive, not doctrinally corrupting; flag for pastoral-cultural sensitivity. |
| deceptive/double-tongued speech | δίλογος (dilogos) | de língua dobre / insincero | 3:8; literal Almeida calque may read as archaic; flag for native-speaker clarity review. |
| greedy for dishonest gain | αἰσχροκερδής (aischrokerdēs) | ganancioso / cobiçoso de lucro desonesto | 3:8; part of the “love of money” word-family (see Section B); keep vocabulary consistent with 3:3 and 6:10. |
Section E — New Low-Risk Terms Introduced by 1 Timothy

| above reproach | ἀνεπίλημπτος / ἀνέγκλητος (anepilēmptos / anenklētos) | irrepreensível | 3:2; 3:10 — two distinct Greek terms rendered with one Portuguese word; acceptable, minor nuance loss noted. |

| new convert | νεόφυτος (neophytos) | recém-convertido | 3:6; agricultural root-image (“newly planted”) lost in translation, no doctrinal stakes. |
| puffed up / conceited | τυφόω (typhoō) | ensoberbecer-se | 3:6; 6:4 — keep same verb both occurrences. |

| purity of conscience | καθαρὸς / ἁγνός (katharos / hagnos) | puro | 3:9; 5:22 — two related Greek words, keep tracked for consistency though both may render “puro.” |
| good standing / confidence | βαθμός / παρρησία (bathmos / parrēsia) | boa posição / confiança | 3:13; guard against a prosperity-adjacent misreading of “posição” as social/financial status. |

This glossary must be loaded alongside the baseline Romans translation_memory.json for all Phase 2 translation work on 1 Timothy. New entries above are proposed for incorporation into an updated, version-incremented translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in a subsequent Phase 1 step, per the versioning and enforcement procedures already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: justiça
Transliteration: dikaiosynē
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: mérito conquistado por esforço moral próprio
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
[Inherited from Romans package] CRITICAL: right standing before God granted through faith. In 1 Timothy 6:11, the same Portuguese word appears in a distinct ethical-pursuit sense (‘busca a justiça’); this ethical sense must never be confused with the forensic sense inherited here. Mandatory theologian review wherever the two senses could be conflated.
Justification
Approved rendering: justificação
Transliteration: dikaiōsis
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: progresso espiritual gradual
Original: δικαιόω
Category: Salvation
[Inherited from Romans package] In 1 Timothy 3:16, the verb ἐδικαιώθη describes Christ’s own resurrection-vindication (‘foi justificado/vindicado em espírito’) — a distinct christological use, not the believer’s forensic justification taught in Romans 3-5. Must be glossed to avoid confusion between the two.
Salvation
Approved rendering: salvação
Transliteration: sōtēria
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: evolução espiritual através de reencarnações sucessivas
Original: σωτηρία / σῴζω
Category: Salvation
[Inherited from Romans package] CRITICAL. Occurs in 1 Timothy 1:15, 2:4, 2:15 (disputed childbearing clause), 4:10, 4:16. Every occurrence tied to a works-adjacent clause (2:15; 4:16; 6:19) requires a mandatory note that salvation is received by faith, evidenced but never earned by works.
Saints
Approved rendering: santos
Transliteration: hagioi
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: santos venerados e invocados como intercessores
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
[Inherited from Romans package] CRITICAL. Occurs 1 Timothy 5:10, ‘washed the feet of the saints.’ Requires the identical mandatory clarifying note at this occurrence: applies to all believers, never exclusively to canonized figures.
Lord
Approved rendering: Senhor
Transliteration: kyrios
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Senhor apenas em sentido devocional, sem reivindicação de senhorio total
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
[Inherited from Romans package] CRITICAL. Occurs 1 Timothy 1:2,12,14; 6:3,14-15, reinforced maximally in 6:15’s doxology (‘Senhor dos senhores’).
Jesus
Approved rendering: Jesus
Transliteration: Iēsous
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
[Inherited from Romans package] Standard proper name, used throughout, frequently in the paired formula ‘Cristo Jesus.‘
God
Approved rendering: Deus
Transliteration: theos
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
[Inherited from Romans package] Repeatedly affirmed in 1 Timothy as ‘the only God’ (1:17) and ‘the living God’ (3:15; 4:10). Same syncretism caution applies re: orixá blending in Afro-Brazilian contexts.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Espírito Santo
Transliteration: pneuma hagion
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: espíritos guias ou mentores espirituais (espiritismo), orixás e guias (Candomblé/Umbanda)
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
[Inherited from Romans package] CRITICAL. In 1 Timothy 4:1 this term is invoked contrastively against ‘espíritos enganadores’ — a directly load-bearing pairing given the Brazilian context.
Father
Approved rendering: Pai
Transliteration: patēr
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
[Inherited from Romans package] Occurs 1 Timothy 1:2, part of the opening greeting formula.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messias
Transliteration: Christos / Mashiach
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: um espírito superior ou mais evoluído (leitura espírita de Jesus como ‘o mais evoluído dos espíritos’)
[Inherited from Romans package] Reserved for explicit OT messianic-fulfillment argument. In 1 Timothy, Χριστός functions mainly as part of Christ’s proper name/title and is rendered ‘Cristo’ (see new key ‘christ’ below); ‘Messias’ remains available for any explicit fulfillment-argument context.
Christ
Approved rendering: Cristo
Transliteration: Christos
Doctrine: Christology
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New key distinguishing the proper-name/title usage from ‘messiah’ (Messias, reserved for explicit OT fulfillment argument). In 1 Timothy, Χριστός is part of Christ’s proper name (‘Cristo Jesus,’ ‘Jesus Cristo’), rendered ‘Cristo’ per Almeida tradition, used throughout.
Overseer Bishop
Approved rendering: bispo
Transliteration: episkopos
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Rejected alternatives: supervisor (perde a continuidade com a tradição Almeida), bispo sem nota explicativa
Original: ἐπίσκοπος
Category: Church Leadership
CRITICAL: two grounded Brazilian collisions: (1) Roman Catholic diocesan monarchical office; (2) Neo-Pentecostal celebrity ‘Bispo’ title (e.g., Edir Macedo, IURD), publicly associated with the ‘godliness as gain’ pattern condemned in 6:5. Mandatory translator note every occurrence (3:1-7).
Mystery
Approved rendering: mistério
Transliteration: mystērion
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching / The Church as Pillar of Truth
Rejected alternatives: segredo (perde a nuance de ‘já revelado’), mistério sem nota explicativa
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Sound Doctrine
CRITICAL: (1) near-verbatim overlap with the Catholic Mass response ‘Mistério da fé!’ (Mysterium fidei); (2) collides with Kardecist/esoteric notions of hidden knowledge for initiates/mediums. Paul’s μυστήριον is publicly revealed, not ritual or channeled. Mandatory note at every occurrence (3:9; 3:16).
Mystery Of Godliness
Approved rendering: o mistério da piedade
Transliteration: to tēs eusebeias mystērion
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth / Christ as the One Mediator
Original: τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον
Category: Christology
Combines two independently Critical/High-flagged terms (mistério, piedade); introduces the Christological hymn of 3:16; requires the strongest available translator note.
Manifested In Flesh
Approved rendering: manifestou-se na carne
Transliteration: ephanerōthē en sarki
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator (Incarnation)
Rejected alternatives: encarnação/encarnou sem a nota obrigatória do pacote básico
Original: ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology
Engages the baseline’s Critical incarnation doctrine and forbidden-substitution rule. Same doctrinal referent as John 1:14 though a different Greek verb; reserve ‘encarnação/encarnou’ only with the baseline’s mandatory Kardecist-distinguishing note.
Mediator
Approved rendering: mediador
Transliteration: mesitēs
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Rejected alternatives: intercessor (borra papéis distintos), mediador sem nota explicativa
Original: μεσίτης
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: highest-risk term in the letter. Collides with the Catholic Marian title ‘Mediadora de todas as graças’ and, more distinctively, with Kardecist mediumship (‘médium’ = human intermediary with spirits of the dead). Must exclude every rival mediating figure. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence (2:5).
King Of Kings Lord Of Lords
Approved rendering: Rei dos reis e Senhor dos senhores
Transliteration: basileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: qualquer formulação de supremacia parcial ou diminuída
Original: βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων
Category: Christology
Doxological title (6:15) reinforcing the baseline’s Critical Lordship-of-Christ doctrine with maximal, unqualified supremacy, excluding every rival spiritual or political authority.
Deceitful Spirits Teachings Of Demons
Approved rendering: espíritos enganadores e doutrinas de demônios
Transliteration: pneumata plana kai didaskaliai daimoniōn
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Rejected alternatives: falsas ideias (paráfrase vaga que perde a linguagem explícita de ‘espíritos’)
Original: πνεύματα πλάνα καὶ διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων
Category: Sound Doctrine
CRITICAL: direct confrontation with mainstream Kardecist mediumship and Candomblé/Umbanda spirit-incorporation. Explicit ‘espíritos’ language must never be softened. Mandatory theologian review (4:1-2).
Godliness As Gain
Approved rendering: a piedade é fonte de lucro / a piedade com contentamento é grande fonte de lucro
Transliteration: porismon einai tēn eusebeian / porismos megas hē eusebeia meta autarkeias
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν / πορισμὸς μέγας ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐτάρκειας
Category: Godliness and Contentment
CRITICAL: single most acute cultural collision point for Brazil (6:5-6), given prominent Neo-Pentecostal prosperity-gospel teaching. Requires identical ‘fonte de lucro’ vocabulary in both verses so the ironic reversal is visible. No softening permitted.
Love Of Money Root Of Evils
Approved rendering: o amor ao dinheiro é raiz de todos os males
Transliteration: rhiza pantōn tōn kakōn estin hē philargyria
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Rejected alternatives: a única raiz de todo o mal (superestima o artigo indefinido grego)
Original: ῥίζα πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστὶν ἡ φιλαργυρία
Category: Godliness and Contentment
Central maxim (6:10); keep vocabulary consistent with ἀφιλάργυρος (3:3) and αἰσχροκερδής (3:8). Note the Greek’s indefinite article/plural ‘evils’ to avoid overclaiming without softening the warning.
Virtue List Ethical Righteousness
Approved rendering: busca a justiça, a piedade, a fé, o amor, a perseverança, a mansidão
Transliteration: diōke dikaiosynēn, eusebeian, pistin, agapēn, hypomonēn, prauïpathian
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: δίωκε δικαιοσύνην, εὐσέβειαν, πίστιν, ἀγάπην, ὑπομονήν, πραϋπαθίαν
Category: Godliness and Contentment
6:11 virtue list. ‘Justiça’ here is ethical-pursuit sense; must not be conflated with the Critical forensic-justification sense of the identical Portuguese word. Mandatory theologian review.
Saved Through Childbearing
Approved rendering: será salva mediante a maternidade
Transliteration: sōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: qualquer formulação que implique mérito salvífico na maternidade
Original: σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: one of the most exegetically difficult clauses (2:15); must never imply salvation is earned through a work. Mandatory theologian review and mandatory teaching note at every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: evangelho
Transliteration: euangelion
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: mensagem de evolução moral (Kardecist ethical-progress framing)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
[Inherited from Romans package] Standard term shared by Catholic and Protestant Portuguese Bibles. Distinctive Brazilian risk: Allan Kardec’s ‘O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo’ reinterprets ‘evangelho’ as ethical teaching compatible with reincarnation. In 1 Timothy 1:11, ‘o evangelho da gloriosa graça/glória do Deus bendito’ must retain the same authoritative apostolic-proclamation sense.
Grace
Approved rendering: graça
Transliteration: charis
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: mérito espiritual acumulado ao longo de vidas sucessivas
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
[Inherited from Romans package] Unmerited favor received by faith, distinguished from Kardecist merit accumulated across reincarnations. Occurs in 1 Timothy’s greeting (1:2), Paul’s own calling (1:14), and the closing benediction (6:21).
Faith
Approved rendering: fé
Transliteration: pistis
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: convicção espírita, fé genérica em forças espirituais
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
[Inherited from Romans package] Personal trust in Christ. In 1 Timothy the identical Portuguese word ‘fé’ must also carry the letter’s frequent shift toward ‘the faith’ as a defined body of apostolic teaching (1:19; 3:9; 4:1; 6:10,21); context, not lexical choice, carries this distinction.
Calling
Approved rendering: chamado
Transliteration: klēsis
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: vocação (narrow sense of a call to priesthood or religious life)
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
[Inherited from Romans package] Occurs in 1 Timothy 6:12, ‘the eternal life to which you were called,’ directly tying Timothy’s perseverance to effectual calling.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: santificação
Transliteration: hagiasmos
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: purificação cármica ao longo de reencarnações (leitura espírita)
Original: ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification
[Inherited from Romans package] Occurs 1 Timothy 4:5, ‘every creature of God is good… sanctified through the word of God and prayer’ — ties ordinary meals and creation-goodness to sanctification, countering ascetic false teaching (4:3).
Law
Approved rendering: lei
Transliteration: nomos
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
[Inherited from Romans package] Occurs 1 Timothy 1:7-9, the lawful use of the Mosaic Law against speculative false teachers. Distinguish from the Kardecist ‘lei de causa e efeito.‘
Intercession
Approved rendering: intercessão
Transliteration: enteuxis
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Rejected alternatives: comunicação com espíritos de mortos por meio de médiuns, intercessão exclusiva dos santos e de Maria
Original: ἔντευξις
Category: Faith
[Inherited from Romans package] Occurs 1 Timothy 2:1, immediately preceding 2:5’s exclusive-mediator statement — doubly relevant given ‘mediador’ (new term below). Distinguish both from Catholic saint/Marian intercession and Kardecist mediumistic communication with the dead.
Episcopate
Approved rendering: episcopado
Transliteration: episkopē
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Rejected alternatives: posição de bispo (perde o registro formal)
Original: ἐπισκοπή
Category: Church Leadership
The formal task/office (3:1) distinct from the office-holder; same institutional-hierarchy caution as ‘bispo’ applies; gloss as the function of overseeing a local congregation.
Elder Office
Approved rendering: presbítero
Transliteration: presbyteros
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Rejected alternatives: ancião como termo primário (colide com o título congregacional das Testemunhas de Jeová no Brasil)
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church Leadership
Technical office (5:17,19), ‘double honor’ when leading well. Context-sensitive: same Greek word is generic ‘older person’ at 5:1-2 — render ‘mais velho/mais velhas’ there. Note distinguishing from the Catholic sacramental priesthood.
Deacon
Approved rendering: diácono
Transliteration: diakonos
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Rejected alternatives: diácono sem nota explicativa
Original: διάκονος
Category: Church Leadership

Man Christ Jesus
Approved rendering: o homem Cristo Jesus
Transliteration: anthrōpos Christos Iēsous
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Rejected alternatives: qualquer suavização docética de ‘homem’

Category: Christology
Stresses Christ’s genuine humanity as the explicit ground of his unique mediatorial qualification (2:5).
Ransom
Approved rendering: resgate
Transliteration: antilytron
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Rejected alternatives: resgate espiritual genérico (perde a especificidade substitutiva)
Original: ἀντίλυτρον
Category: Christology
Christ’s self-giving as a substitutionary ransom (2:6). Connects to the Romans baseline’s escalation rule for atonement/propitiation language (Rom 3:25); apply the same mandatory review here.
Good Confession
Approved rendering: boa confissão
Transliteration: homologia
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ὁμολογία
Category: Christology
Timothy’s own confession, paralleled with Christ’s confession before Pilate (6:12-13); thematically links to the Romans baseline’s Critical Lordship confession (Romans 10:9), though distinct vocabulary.
Taken Up In Glory
Approved rendering: foi elevado em glória
Transliteration: anelēmphthē en doxē
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Rejected alternatives: qualquer expressão que ecoe a ‘elevação espiritual’ cármica
Original: ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ
Category: Christology
Christ’s ascension (3:16), a singular historical bodily exaltation, not a gradual Kardecist ‘elevação espiritual’ achieved across successive lives.
Godliness
Approved rendering: piedade
Transliteration: eusebeia
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Rejected alternatives: religiosidade (demasiado genérico), devoção (perde a especificidade de reverência a Deus)
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Godliness and Contentment
The letter’s most frequent positive character-term (2:2; 3:16; 4:7-8; 6:3,5-6,11). Colloquial Portuguese ‘piedade’ primarily means ‘pity,’ a false-friend risk. Standing translator note recommended at every occurrence.
Deposit Of Faith
Approved rendering: depósito (que te foi confiado)
Transliteration: parathēkē / episteuthēn
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Rejected alternatives: revelação contínua (abre a porta para revelação privada ou canalizada)
Original: παραθήκη / ἐπιστεύθην
Category: Guardianship of Truth
Fixed body of apostolic teaching entrusted to Paul (1:11) and Timothy (6:20). Quietly but really relevant against Kardecism’s psicografia claims, already flagged in the Romans baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine.
Falsely Called Knowledge

Transliteration: pseudōnymos gnōsis
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Rejected alternatives: sabedoria alternativa (demasiado neutro)
Original: ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις
Category: Guardianship of Truth
Proto-Gnostic warning (6:20) with quiet relevance to Brazilian esoteric, Theosophical, and Kardecist claims to hidden or channeled spiritual knowledge.

Occurs 1:5,19; 3:9; 4:2. Distinguish from a Kardecist-influenced karmic-ledger notion; judged and cleansed before the one true God in this life.
Pillar And Buttress Of Truth
Approved rendering: coluna e alicerce da verdade
Transliteration: stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth
Rejected alternatives: qualquer formulação que implique que a igreja gera ou garante infalivelmente a verdade
Original: στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Church
Anchor text for the doctrine category (3:15). Teach as the church upholding/displaying revealed truth, not generating or infallibly defining it — pastoral caution given proximity to Catholic magisterial-infallibility claims.
Laying On Of Hands
Approved rendering: imposição das mãos
Transliteration: epithesis tōn cheirōn
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Rejected alternatives: qualquer descrição que implique transmissão de energia/fluído espiritual impessoal

Transliteration: chēra, ontōs chēra
Doctrine: Care for Widows and the Household of Faith
Original: χήρα, ὄντως χήρα

Transliteration: diplēs timēs
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Rejected alternatives: qualquer enquadramento citado isoladamente como justificativa para enriquecimento pessoal

Universal Salvific Will
Approved rendering: Deus, nosso Salvador… quer que todos os homens sejam salvos
Transliteration: theos ho sōtēr hēmōn… pantas anthrōpous thelei sōthēnai
Doctrine: God’s Universal Salvific Will
Original: θεὸς ὁ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν… πάντας ἀνθρώπους θέλει σωθῆναι
Category: Salvation
2:3-4, echoed 4:10. Must avoid both an unqualified-universalist misreading and unduly narrow exclusivist softening. ‘Salvador’ applied to the Father requires a note that Father and Son share one divine salvific will.
Exclusive Monotheism Doxology
Approved rendering: Rei dos séculos, imortal, invisível, o único Deus
Transliteration: basilei tōn aiōnōn, aphthartō, aoratō, monō theō
Doctrine: Exclusive Monotheism and Doxology

Transliteration: douloi hypo zygon
Doctrine: Social Order: Slaves and Masters
Original: δοῦλοι ὑπὸ ζυγόν
Category: Household and Family
6:1-2. Cultural-sensitivity, not doctrinal-corruption, risk given Brazil’s colonial slaveholding history. Must not be taught as endorsing slavery nor flattened into anachronistic direct commentary without careful framing. Mandatory sensitivity review.
Greedy For Dishonest Gain
Approved rendering: ganancioso
Transliteration: aischrokerdēs
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Original: αἰσχροκερδής

Transliteration: mias gynaikos andra
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Original: μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα / ἄνδρες

Transliteration: sōtēr
Doctrine: God’s Universal Salvific Will
