Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 1 Peter (Full Book) — Portuguese Language Package
Scope and Method
This analysis covers 1 Peter 1:1 through 5:14 in the original Koine Greek (per NA28/UBS5 critical text). The core passage, 1 Peter 1:3-9, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every subsequent chapter is analyzed for load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields. Where a term already appears in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, the recorded Portuguese rendering is reused exactly and marked [TM]; risk tiers for those terms are cited from the baseline. New terms introduced by 1 Peter receive a proposed rendering and risk assessment consistent with the baseline’s methodology, with particular attention to the same Brazilian religious landscape the baseline documents: Kardecist Spiritism (reincarnation, mediumship, karmic “law of cause and effect,” spirit guides), popular Catholic piety (sainthood, ordained priesthood, purgatory, saintly intercession), and Afro-Brazilian Candomblé/Umbanda (spirit incorporation, orixás, ambiguous spirit-entities such as Exu).
1 Peter introduces two collision risks not present in Romans that require special flagging throughout this Language Package extension:
- “Spirits in prison” / Christ’s proclamation (1 Peter 3:18-22) — Brazil’s mainstream Kardecist and Afro-Brazilian religious frameworks both feature elaborate, textually codified doctrines of discarnate spirits, spirit realms, and communication with the dead. This passage is the single highest new collision risk in 1 Peter.
- “Holy/royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5, 2:9) — direct collision with the Catholic category of an exclusive ordained priesthood (padres), requiring explicit teaching that Peter applies priestly status to the whole believing community.
PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: 1 Peter 1:3-9 (Verse-by-Verse)
1 Peter 1:3
“Bendito o Deus e Pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, que, segundo a sua grande misericórdia, nos regenerou para uma viva esperança, mediante a ressurreição de Jesus Cristo dentre os mortos.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εὐλογητός | eulogētos | ”well-spoken-of,” blessed | Doxological formula opening berakah-style praise | ”Blessed” | Opens the letter’s praise of God for the new-birth hope; sets doxological tone | bendito — Low risk; standard liturgical term, no collision |
| θεός καὶ πατήρ | theos kai patēr | God and Father | God as Father of the Lord Jesus Christ | ”God and Father,” “God, the Father” | Identifies God specifically as Father of Christ, grounding the following clauses in the Father-Son relation | Deus [TM, Critical] / Pai [TM, Critical] — reuse exactly; do not substitute |
| κύριος | kyrios | lord, master | Owner, sovereign, exclusive authority | ”Lord" | "our Lord Jesus Christ” — confessional title of exclusive lordship | Senhor [TM, Critical] — reuse exactly; must retain exclusive-lordship force |
| ἔλεος | eleos | mercy, compassion shown to one in need | Covenant mercy, pity, compassion in action | ”mercy” | God’s mercy is the ground/cause of the new birth — unmerited, not triggered by prior spiritual merit | misericórdia — High risk: must be distinguished from Kardecist doctrine in which the spirit’s advancement is earned through its own accumulated moral effort across lives; God’s mercy here is the uncaused cause of regeneration, echoing TM’s “grace” entry |
| ἀναγεννήσας | anagennēsas | having caused to be born again / begotten anew | New spiritual birth, regeneration, effected by God | ”caused us to be born again,” “given us new birth,” “regenerated” | The decisive, one-time act of God birthing believers into new spiritual life through Christ’s resurrection | regenerou-nos / regeneração — CRITICAL risk: the literal cognate “renascimento” must be avoided as a primary gloss, since Kardecist Spiritism teaches “renascimento”/reincarnation as the soul’s repeated embodiment across many lives. Use “regeneração” (Almeida tradition) and pair with explicit teaching that this is a single, decisive, non-repeating new birth accomplished by God, not a recurring cycle |
| ἐλπίδα ζῶσαν | elpida zōsan | living hope | Hope that is alive, active, vital (vs. dead/inert hope) | “living hope” | The hope produced by regeneration is alive because it is grounded in a living, risen Christ | esperança viva — High risk: must not be flattened into generic optimism; the “livingness” of the hope is grounded specifically in the resurrection, not in a vague spiritual outlook |
| ἀνάστασις…ἐκ νεκρῶν | anastasis…ek nekrōn | resurrection…from the dead | Bodily rising from death to life, historical and once-for-all | ”resurrection from the dead” | The historical, bodily resurrection of Jesus is the objective ground of the living hope | ressurreição…dentre os mortos [TM, Critical] — reuse exactly; NEVER “reencarnação.” This is the doctrinal anchor of the whole book’s opening and must never be softened |
1 Peter 1:4
“para uma herança incorruptível, incontaminável e imarcescível, guardada nos céus para vós.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κληρονομία | klēronomia | inheritance | Family inheritance rights; here, the believer’s future heavenly possession | ”inheritance” | The believer’s guaranteed future possession, secured in heaven, not earned through effort | herança — Medium risk: connect to TM’s “adoption” doctrine (full inheritance rights); avoid framing as something progressively earned through moral advancement across lifetimes |
| ἄφθαρτος | aphthartos | imperishable, incorruptible | Not subject to decay or corruption | ”imperishable,” “incorruptible,” “that fadeth not away” | The inheritance cannot decay, unlike earthly possessions | incorruptível — Medium risk: must be tied to the concrete future inheritance secured by Christ’s resurrection, not to the generic Kardecist/Spiritist notion of an inherently immortal, ever-progressing soul-substance |
| ἀμίαντος | amiantos | undefiled, unstained | Ritually and morally unstained | ”undefiled” | The inheritance is untouched by sin or corruption | incontaminável — Low risk; standard term |
| ἀμάραντος | amarantos | unfading, not withering | Botanical metaphor: a flower that never wilts | ”unfading,” “that does not fade” | Permanence and unending freshness of the inheritance | imarcescível (formal register; may gloss as “que nunca se murcha”) — Low risk |
| τηρέω (τετηρημένην) | tēreō | to guard, keep, preserve | Careful custodial keeping | ”kept,” “reserved,” “guarded” | God himself keeps the inheritance secure — passive verb, God as guarantor | guardada — Low-Medium risk; passive voice should be preserved to keep God as implied guarantor, not human effort |
| οὐρανός | ouranos | heaven, sky | The dwelling place of God; the unseen realm above | ”heaven,” “heavens” | The inheritance’s location guarantees it is beyond earthly threat or corruption | céus — Low risk; standard |
1 Peter 1:5
“vós, que pelo poder de Deus sois guardados mediante a fé, para a salvação que está preparada para se revelar no último tempo.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δύναμις θεοῦ | dynamis theou | power of God | Effective, active divine might | ”power of God” | God’s power, not human willpower or “energia espiritual,” is what preserves believers | poder de Deus [TM, Medium] — reuse exactly |
| φρουρέω | phroureō | to guard, protect (military term — a garrison standing guard) | Protective custody, guarding against attack | ”guarded,” “kept,” “protected” | Military metaphor: believers are under God’s active protective guard until the end | guardados — Medium risk: convey active divine protection (a garrison standing watch), not passive fate or impersonal cosmic protection |
| πίστις | pistis | faith, trust, faithfulness | Personal trust in a specific object; also faithfulness/fidelity | ”faith,” “belief,” “trust” | The instrumental means through which God’s protective power operates | fé [TM, High] — reuse exactly |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | salvation, deliverance | Rescue, deliverance, wholeness | ”salvation,” “deliverance” | The eschatological salvation to be fully revealed at the end — a decisive, God-accomplished outcome | salvação [TM, Critical] — reuse exactly; must never be reframed as gradual spiritual evolution across reincarnations |
| ἀποκαλυφθῆναι | apokalyphthēnai | to be revealed, unveiled | Disclosure of what was hidden | ”to be revealed” | Salvation already secured but not yet fully unveiled — future consummation | revelar-se — Medium-High risk: distinguish from Kardecist claims of ongoing mediumistic “revelation” (psicografia); this is a single future eschatological disclosure, not an evolving stream of spirit-communicated teaching |
| καιρὸς ἔσχατος | kairos eschatos | last time, final appointed moment | The climactic, decisive end-time | ”last time,” “last day” | Points to a fixed, final consummation, not an open-ended cycle | último tempo — Medium risk: convey a fixed terminus, contrasting with a cyclical/unending framework of spiritual progress |
1 Peter 1:6
“nisso vos alegrais muito, ainda que agora, por um pouco de tempo, se for necessário, sejais entristecidos por várias provações.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαλλιάω | agalliaō | to exult, rejoice greatly | Intense, exuberant joy, often eschatological | ”rejoice greatly,” “exult,” “greatly rejoice” | Joy rooted in the certainty of future salvation, not in present circumstances | alegrar-se muito / exultar — Low-Medium risk; ensure intensity is preserved, not flattened to mild contentment |
| λυπέω | lypeō | to grieve, be sorrowful | Genuine emotional distress | ”grieved,” “distressed” | Real, acknowledged suffering coexists with joy — not denial of pain | entristecido — Low risk |
| ποικίλος | poikilos | various, of many kinds, multi-colored | Diversity/variety of kind | ”various,” “manifold,” “all kinds of” | The trials are diverse in form but united in purpose (v.7) | várias / diversas — Low risk |
| πειρασμός | peirasmos | trial, test, temptation | Context-sensitive: external testing circumstance or internal temptation to sin | ”trials,” “temptations,” “testings” | Here: external trials/suffering that test genuineness of faith, not enticement to sin | provações — Medium risk: must be distinguished contextually from “tentação” (temptation to sin); here it is a refining external trial, not moral seduction, and must not be read through a karmic “you are paying for past-life errors” lens |
1 Peter 1:7
“para que a prova da vossa fé, mais preciosa do que o ouro que perece, embora provado pelo fogo, seja achada para louvor, gloria e honra na revelação de Jesus Cristo.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοκίμιον | dokimion | the tested/proven genuineness (of a metal) | Refined, tested authenticity | ”genuineness,” “proof,” “trial” | Suffering functions as a refining fire that proves (does not create) the authenticity of faith | prova (autenticidade provada) — High risk: must not be read as the trial itself generating merit accumulated across lifetimes (a Kardecist reading of suffering as karmic purification); the trial proves a genuineness already given by grace |
| χρυσίον | chrysion | gold | Precious metal, refined by fire | ”gold” | Comparative image: tested faith is more valuable than refined gold | ouro — Low risk |
| δοκιμάζω | dokimazō | to test, prove, examine for genuineness | Assaying/refining process | ”tested,” “proved,” “refined” | The refining process itself, applied metaphorically to faith under trial | provado — Medium risk (same purification-reading caution as δοκίμιον) |
| ἔπαινος | epainos | praise, commendation | Formal commendation/approval | ”praise,” “commendation” | Eschatological commendation given at Christ’s appearing | louvor — Low risk |
| δόξα | doxa | glory, honor, radiance | God’s radiant honor and presence; derivatively, honor bestowed | ”glory” | Glory awarded at the revelation of Christ, tied to the proven genuineness of faith | glória [TM, Medium-High] — reuse exactly |

1 Peter 1:8
“a quem, não havendo visto, amais; em quem, não o vendo agora, mas crendo, exultais com alegria inefável e glorificada.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |

| πιστεύω | pisteuō | to believe, trust | Personal trust/reliance, cognate of πίστις | ”believe,” “trust” | Present, ongoing trust in the unseen Christ | crer — High risk (cognate of “fé” [TM]); must retain personal trust in Christ specifically, not generic belief in spiritual realities |

| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κομιζόμενοι | komizomenoi | receiving, obtaining, carrying off for oneself | Receiving as one’s own possession | ”obtaining,” “receiving,” “since you are receiving” | Present participle: believers are already, presently, receiving the outcome of faith | obtendo / recebendo — Low risk |
| τέλος | telos | end, goal, outcome, culmination | Not mere cessation but the intended, decisive completion/purpose | ”end,” “goal,” “outcome” | The decisive, attained goal of faith — a fixed destination, reached through Christ’s finished work | fim / alvo — High risk: this “τέλος” is a decisive, attainable goal secured by Christ, sharply contrasting with the Kardecist framework in which the spirit’s journey has no single decisive endpoint but continues indefinitely across further incarnations. This contrast should be made explicit in teaching notes |
| ψυχή | psychē | soul, life, self | The whole inner person; sometimes simply “life" | "soul,” “life,” “self” | The object of salvation — the whole person, not a discarnate “spirit” advancing through its own effort | alma — High risk: “salvação das almas” must be taught as the holistic, Christ-accomplished salvation of the whole person, explicitly distinguished from the Kardecist doctrine of the soul/spirit’s own gradual moral evolution across successive incarnations |
PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 (remaining verses: 1:1-2, 1:10-25)

Exodus 24) | “sprinkling of the blood” | Christ’s atoning blood applied to believers, ratifying the new covenant | aspersão do sangue — Critical risk: sacrificial atonement imagery must not be flattened to symbolic ritual purification; ties directly to Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering doctrine |

| lamb without blemish or spot | ἀμνὸς ἄμωμος καὶ ἄσπιλος | amnos amōmos kai aspilos | unblemished, spotless lamb | Sacrificial purity imagery (Passover/Isaiah 53 background) | “lamb without blemish or spot” | Christ’s sinless perfection qualifies him as the perfect sacrificial substitute | cordeiro sem mácula e sem defeito — Critical risk; substitutionary atonement imagery, requires OT sacrificial background |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| vices list (malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander) | κακία, δόλος, ὑπόκρισις, φθόνος, καταλαλιά | kakia, dolos, hypokrisis, phthonos, katalalia | evil, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, evil-speaking | Catalog of relational sins to be put off | ”malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander” | Vices to be shed as part of holy conduct, preparatory to spiritual growth | malícia, engano, hipocrisia, invejas, maledicências — Medium risk (grouped); ties to Holiness in Conduct doctrine |

| spiritual sacrifices | θυσία πνευματική | thysia pneumatikē | spiritual sacrifice(s) | Non-cultic offerings (praise, obedience, generosity) replacing animal sacrifice | ”spiritual sacrifices” | The priestly community’s offerings are lives of praise and obedience, not ritual/cultic acts | sacrifícios espirituais — High risk; must not be conflated with the Catholic Mass as a re-presented sacrifice |

TM “election,” High) |
| royal priesthood | βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα | basileion hierateuma | royal priesthood | Combines kingship and priesthood, echoing Exodus 19:6 | ”royal priesthood” | Direct curriculum doctrine term: believers share Christ’s royal-priestly identity | sacerdócio real — CRITICAL risk: same collision as “holy priesthood” above, intensified by the explicit curriculum doctrine “The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood”; requires the most thorough explanatory footnote in Chapter 2 |

| household servants / masters | οἰκέται / δεσπόται | oiketai / despotai | household slaves / masters | 1st-century domestic slavery relationships | ”servants/masters,” “slaves/masters” | Historical instruction to enslaved believers; pastoral, not a socio-political endorsement of slavery | servos / senhores — High risk: given Brazil’s own extensive history as the largest slaveholding society in the Americas, this passage requires careful pastoral framing distinguishing Peter’s first-century pastoral counsel from any endorsement of slavery as an institution |
| Christ suffered for you | Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν | Christos epathen hyper hymōn | Christ suffered on behalf of you | Vicarious, substitutionary suffering | ”Christ suffered for you” | Core statement of Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering doctrine; Christ’s suffering as example AND as atoning substitute | Cristo sofreu por vós — CRITICAL risk: must convey actual vicarious atonement, not merely Christ as a moral exemplar of enduring suffering (a reading Kardecism could accommodate by treating Christ as “the most evolved spirit” modeling patient suffering) |
| he bore our sins | ἀνήνεγκεν τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν | anēnegken tas hamartias hēmōn | he carried up/bore our sins | Sacrificial bearing of sin (Isaiah 53 allusion) | “he himself bore our sins” | Substitutionary bearing of sin’s guilt/penalty on the cross | levou os nossos pecados — CRITICAL risk: substitutionary atonement, ties directly to “pecado” [TM, High] and “justiça” [TM, Critical] |

Chapter 3
| Term (Eng.) | Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |

| humble-minded | ταπεινόφρων | tapeinophrōn | humble in mind/disposition | Lowliness of mind, opposite of pride | ”humble-minded,” “humble in spirit” | General call to humility among believers (3:8), anticipating ch. 5’s Elders and Humility doctrine | humilde — High risk (ties to curriculum doctrine “Elders and Humility”) |
| suffering for righteousness’ sake | πάσχοντες διὰ δικαιοσύνην | paschontes dia dikaiosynēn | suffering on account of righteousness | Suffering that results specifically from righteous conduct/living | ”suffering for righteousness’ sake,” “suffer for doing right” | Core curriculum doctrine; here δικαιοσύνη denotes righteous conduct for which one suffers, a distinct sense from the forensic “justiça imputada” of Romans 3-5 though from the same root | sofrer por causa da justiça — CRITICAL risk: must reuse “justiça” [TM, Critical] exactly, but with an explicit semantic-range note distinguishing this ethical-conduct sense (righteous living that provokes hostility) from the forensic sense of imputed righteousness in Romans; conflating the two senses risks doctrinal confusion for translators trained on the Romans package |
| sanctify Christ as Lord | ἁγιάσατε κύριον τὸν Χριστόν | hagiasate kyrion ton Christon | set apart/regard as holy the Lord Christ | To honor and revere Christ’s lordship supremely in the heart | ”sanctify Christ as Lord,” “in your hearts regard Christ as Lord” | Combines “holy” and “Lord” doctrines: Christ is to be enthroned as supremely holy Lord within, especially amid suffering | santificai a Cristo como Senhor — CRITICAL risk: reuses both santo/santificação [TM, High] and Senhor [TM, Critical]; must convey inward enthronement of Christ’s supreme lordship, not a ritual act |
| good conscience | συνείδησις ἀγαθή | syneidēsis agathē | good conscience | Inner moral awareness aligned with righteousness | ”good conscience” | The believer’s clear conscience as the ground of a bold defense of hope (3:16), and later of baptism’s meaning (3:21) | boa consciência — Medium risk |
| once for all | ἅπαξ | hapax | once, a single time | Non-repeatable, singular, decisive occurrence | ”once for all,” “once” | Christ’s suffering for sins is a single, unrepeatable, decisive event | uma vez para sempre / de uma vez por todas — CRITICAL risk: the finality of “ἅπαξ” stands in direct verbal and doctrinal contrast to the repeated cycles of Kardecist reincarnation; must be rendered with unmistakable finality |
| spirits in prison | πνεύματα ἐν φυλακῇ | pneumata en phylakē | spirits in a prison/custody | Disobedient spiritual beings held in a fixed custodial state awaiting judgment (interpretations vary: fallen angels of Genesis 6, or the disobedient dead of Noah’s generation) | “spirits in prison” | The single highest new collision risk in 1 Peter | espíritos em prisão — CRITICAL risk: direct terminological collision with mainstream Brazilian Kardecist doctrine of spirits in intermediate realms (“colônias espirituais,” “umbral”) progressing toward evolution, and with Afro-Brazilian traditions of consultable spirit-entities. Requires the most extensive explanatory teaching note in the entire book: these are disobedient spirits held in a fixed, custodial, judicial state, not spirits available for consultation, mediumship, or engaged in ongoing moral progress |
| he proclaimed | ἐκήρυξεν | ekēryxen | he heralded, proclaimed | Authoritative, one-time public proclamation | ”he preached,” “he proclaimed,” “he made proclamation” | Christ’s (or, in some readings, the Spirit through Noah’s) proclamation to these spirits — historic and singular, not an ongoing exchange | pregou / proclamou — CRITICAL risk: must not be read as supporting ongoing communicative exchange with the dead akin to Kardecist mediumship or psicografia; the interpretive ambiguity of the passage should be preserved without importing Spiritist categories into either reading |
| baptism (as antitype) | βάπτισμα (ἀντίτυπον) | baptisma (antitypon) | baptism (as counterpart/fulfillment) | Water baptism as the New Covenant counterpart to the flood’s salvation-through-water | ”baptism,” “corresponds to,” “antitype” | Baptism saves not by physical washing but as an appeal/pledge of a good conscience toward God | batismo (antítipo) — High risk: must explicitly exclude a merely ritualistic/magical reading; salvation is through the resurrection of Christ appropriated by faith, symbolized in baptism, not through the water itself |
| angels, authorities, and powers | ἄγγελοι καὶ ἐξουσίαι καὶ δυνάμεις | angeloi kai exousiai kai dynameis | angels and authorities and powers | Spiritual beings and powers subjected to Christ’s lordship | ”angels, authorities, and powers” | Christ’s supreme lordship extends over all spiritual powers, subjected to him after his ascension | anjos, autoridades e poderes — High risk: must not be conflated with Candomblé/Umbanda spirit hierarchies (orixás, guias, entidades); these are subjected to Christ, not equal or parallel spiritual authorities to be venerated or consulted |
Chapter 4
| Term (Eng.) | Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| the gospel was preached even to the dead | εὐηγγελίσθη καὶ νεκροῖς | euēngelisthē kai nekrois | good news was announced even to the dead | Contested reference (interpretations include: those now dead who heard the gospel while alive, or an eschatological statement of the gospel’s reach) | “the gospel was preached also to the dead” | Explains why some who heard the gospel now face death’s judgment like all humanity, yet live by the Spirit before God | o evangelho foi anunciado também aos mortos — CRITICAL risk: high potential for misreading as support for the Kardecist doctrine of continuing post-mortem spiritual instruction/progress, or a “second chance after death” compatible with reincarnation’s ongoing opportunities. Teaching notes must scope this narrowly and avoid any implication of ongoing evangelistic opportunity after death |
| fiery trial | πύρωσις | pyrōsis | burning, fiery ordeal | Intense trial/testing, metaphor of refining fire | ”fiery trial,” “fiery ordeal” | Suffering as a testing fire that should not surprise believers | provação ardente — High risk: must not be read through the lens of Catholic purgatorial fire (payment for post-mortem sin) or Kardecist karmic suffering (paying off debts from past lives); this is a present, refining test of faith, not payment for guilt |
| share Christ’s sufferings | κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν | koinōneite tois Christou pathēmasin | to share/participate in Christ’s sufferings | Present participation in the pattern of Christ’s suffering, not repetition of his atoning work | ”share Christ’s sufferings,” “participate in Christ’s sufferings” | Believers’ suffering unites them with Christ’s pattern without adding to his once-for-all atonement | participar dos sofrimentos de Cristo — High risk: must not be misunderstood as re-enacting or repeating Christ’s atoning suffering (cf. “once for all,” ch. 3) |
| gift | χάρισμα | charisma | grace-gift | Spirit-given enablement for service | ”gift,” “spiritual gift” | Each believer has received a gift to be used in serving others as stewards of God’s grace | dom (cf. dons espirituais [TM, High]) — reuse pattern exactly; distinguish from Kardecist mediunidade and Candomblé/Umbanda gifts of incorporation |
| manifold grace of God | ποικίλης χάριτος θεοῦ | poikilēs charitos theou | many-colored/varied grace of God | The diverse forms God’s grace takes through different gifts | ”manifold grace of God,” “God’s varied grace” | Grace expressed diversely through the church’s varied gifts of service | multiforme graça de Deus — Medium risk (cf. graça [TM, High]) |
| judgment begins at the house of God | κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ | krima apo tou oikou tou theou | judgment from the house of God | God’s refining judgment falling first on his own household | ”judgment begins with the household of God” | Present suffering functions as purifying discipline for the church, preceding final judgment on unbelievers | juízo pela casa de Deus — Medium risk |
| Creator | κτίστης | ktistēs | creator, maker | Personal originator of all things | ”Creator” | Believers commit their souls to a faithful, personal Creator amid suffering | Criador — Medium risk: affirms a personal, sovereign Creator, contrasting with impersonal-force or pantheistic conceptions of ultimate reality found in some syncretistic frameworks |
Chapter 5
| Term (Eng.) | Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | PT Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| elder | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | elder, older man | Church office of pastoral oversight; also generic “older person" | "elder” | Core curriculum doctrine term: church leaders exhorted to shepherd with humility | presbítero / ancião — High risk: must be distinguished both from the Catholic clerical hierarchy (padre, bispo, papa) and from any notion of spiritual “eldership” claimed by Kardecist mediums or spirit guides |
| shepherd the flock | ποιμάνατε τὸ ποίμνιον | poimanate to poimnion | shepherd/tend the flock | Pastoral care, feeding and protecting | ”shepherd the flock,” “tend the flock” | Elders’ primary charge: pastoral care modeled on Christ the Chief Shepherd | pastoreai o rebanho — Medium risk |
| exercising oversight | ἐπισκοποῦντες | episkopountes | watching over, exercising oversight | Function of guarding/superintending | ”exercising oversight,” “serving as overseers” | Describes the elder’s functional oversight role, not a fixed clerical title | exercendo a supervisão — Medium-High risk: avoid the institutional noun “bispo,” which would misleadingly suggest a formal ecclesiastical office distinct from Peter’s functional description |
| domineering / lording over | κατακυριεύοντες | katakyrieuontes | lording over, exercising domineering control | Abusive exercise of authority (cognate of κύριος) | “domineering over,” “lording it over” | Elders must not lord over the flock as owners — echoing the exclusivity of Christ’s true lordship | dominando sobre — High risk: cognate warning tied to Senhor [TM, Critical] — only Christ is rightly “Senhor”; elders must never assume that role over the flock |
| chief Shepherd | ἀρχιποίμην | archipoimēn | chief/head shepherd | Christ’s supreme pastoral authority over under-shepherds | ”chief Shepherd” | Christ as the ultimate authority to whom elders are accountable | Pastor supremo / Pastor principal — High risk; Christological title |
| crown of glory | στέφανος τῆς δόξης | stephanos tēs doxēs | crown of glory | Eschatological reward imagery (victor’s wreath) | “crown of glory” | The reward awaiting faithful elders at Christ’s appearing | coroa da glória — Medium risk (cf. glória [TM, Medium-High]) |
| clothe yourselves with humility | ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε | tapeinophrosynēn enkombōsasthe | tie on humility (as a garment/apron) | Vivid imagery of tying on a slave’s work-apron | ”clothe yourselves with humility,” “put on humility” | Core curriculum doctrine “Elders and Humility”: humility as a visibly worn, active posture of service among all believers, not mere inward attitude | revesti-vos de humildade — CRITICAL risk (elevated given explicit curriculum doctrine emphasis): must retain the vivid servant-apron imagery of active, visible, self-humbling service, not generic modesty |
| God gives grace to the humble | ταπεινοῖς δίδωσιν χάριν | tapeinois didōsin charin | to the humble he gives grace | Reversal principle: God opposes pride, favors humility with grace | ”gives grace to the humble” | Grace, not merit or self-effort, is given to the humble — reinforces Grace doctrine | dá graça aos humildes — High risk (cf. graça [TM, High]) |
| adversary, the devil | ἀντίδικος διάβολος | antidikos diabolos | opposing litigant, the devil/slanderer | A real, personal, hostile spiritual adversary | ”your adversary the devil,” “the enemy” | The devil as a real personal being actively opposing believers, to be resisted in faith | adversário, o diabo — CRITICAL risk: must be taught as a real, personal, malevolent spiritual being, explicitly distinguished from Kardecism (which generally denies a personal devil/Satan, treating “evil” as morally backward but ultimately redeemable spirits) and from the popular Afro-Brazilian conflation of the Christian devil with the morally ambiguous trickster-spirit Exu of Umbanda/Candomblé |
| roaring lion | λέων ὠρυόμενος | leōn ōryomenos | roaring lion | Predatory, aggressive threat imagery | ”roaring lion” | Vivid image of the devil’s predatory intent to devour believers | leão que ruge — Low risk |
| resist him, firm in the faith | ἀντίστητε στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει | antistēte stereoi tē pistei | stand against, firm in the faith | Active, steadfast resistance grounded in trust in God | ”resist him, firm in the faith” | Active response to the devil’s threat is resistance grounded in faith, not fear, ritual protection, or appeasement | resisti-lhe firmes na fé — High risk (cf. fé [TM, High]) |
| the true grace of God | χάρις θεοῦ ἡ ἀληθής | charis theou hē alēthēs | the true grace of God | Peter’s closing affirmation of the letter’s authentic doctrinal content | ”the true grace of God” | Closing seal on the letter’s teaching as authentic divine grace, not a rival or false teaching | verdadeira graça de Deus — High risk (cf. graça [TM, High]) |
| kiss of love | φίλημα ἀγάπης | philēma agapēs | kiss of love | First-century greeting custom expressing familial affection among believers | ”kiss of love,” “holy kiss” | Closing greeting expressing genuine familial affection in the church | ósculo de amor / beijo de amor — Low risk; cultural-gesture note recommended for contemporary readers |
