Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — English → Filipino | 1 Timothy 1–6

Format: Smart Brevity

Why it matters

1 Timothy gives Filipino believers Paul’s field manual for church order — who leads, how truth is guarded, how worship happens, and how the church cares for its most vulnerable members. Translated into Filipino, this letter runs directly into the deepest structural and devotional patterns of the destination culture’s dominant religious tradition: a diocesan-bishop hierarchy, sacramental ordination, Marian/saint intercession, and a magisterially-interpreted “Sacred Tradition.” Nowhere else in this Language Package’s curricula does the source text confront the destination culture’s dominant religious framework this directly, this often, or this early in the text (the sharpest collision, 1 Timothy 2:5’s “one mediator,” appears in chapter 2 of 6). Getting this translation right — precise, respectful, and doctrinally uncompromised — determines whether Filipino readers receive Paul’s actual argument or an unintentionally Catholicized or unintentionally anti-Catholic substitute.

Key findings

  • Full-book analysis complete. All 6 chapters of 1 Timothy have been mapped verse-by-verse (core passage, 3:1-13 plus 3:14-16) and chapter-by-chapter (1, 2, 4, 5, 6), extending — never contradicting — the baseline Romans Language Package.
  • Doctrine risk registry: 19 doctrines identified, matching doctrine_risk_registry.json: 5 Critical, 8 High, 5 Medium, 1 Low. 13 of 19 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review; 5 require native speaker review; 1 is automated-only.
  • Term registry: ~83 terms tracked in bible_term_registry.json/translation_memory.json for this curriculum. 9 Critical-risk terms and 35 High-risk terms — 44 terms total (53% of the glossary) — require mandatory human theologian review, a substantially higher Critical/High concentration than the Romans baseline.
  • The core passage (3:1-13) carries the single highest term-density Critical-tier concentration in the book: overseer (tagapangasiwa), deacon (diyakono), husband of one wife, and the 3:14-16 doctrinal continuation (pillar of truth, mystery of godliness, the Christ-hymn) all collide directly with entrenched Filipino Catholic ecclesiology.
  • Five collision clusters dominate the risk profile: (1) church office vs. diocesan/sacramental hierarchy, (2) Christ’s one mediatorship vs. Marian/saint intercession, (3) “mystery” vs. the Mysteries of the Rosary, (4) “pillar of truth”/“guard the deposit” vs. magisterial Sacred Tradition, (5) godliness/contentment vs. active prosperity-gospel teaching within parts of Filipino charismatic Christianity.
  • Three genuine source-text ambiguities (3:11 women/wives, 2:12 exercise authority, 2:15 saved through childbearing) must be preserved, not resolved, per this Language Package’s non-adjudication policy on live denominational debates.

Risks

  • Highest risk: 1 Timothy 2:5 (one Mediator). A softened or hedged rendering here would blunt Paul’s numerically exclusive claim at the exact point Scripture states it most sharply — the single most consequential verse in the curriculum.
  • Structural risk: overseer/deacon offices. Default reuse of “obispo” (a term used in some respected existing Filipino Bible translations) would silently import a territorial, apostolic-succession hierarchy foreign to the text; this has been explicitly guarded against but requires vigilant enforcement in Phase 2.
  • Textual-critical exposure: 1 Timothy 3:16. The θεός/ὅς manuscript variant is actively exploited by Iglesia ni Cristo and Jehovah’s Witnesses materials to deny Christ’s deity; translation must not drift toward that reading even inadvertently.
  • Contemporary theological risk: prosperity-gospel collision (6:5-10). Unlike most other risks in this curriculum, this is not historical folk religion but a currently-taught rival theology within Filipino Christianity itself — arguably the sharpest live pastoral risk in the letter.
  • Sensitivity risk: mandated celibacy (4:3) and slavery terminology (6:1-2). Both require careful historical framing to avoid appearing as an attack on legitimate Catholic vocational celibacy or a simplistic modern-employment/caste analogy.

Opportunities

  • Filipino extended-family culture is a genuine asset, not a risk, for the Care-for-Widows doctrine (5:1-16) — pagmamalasakit sa kapamilya already reinforces the text’s family-first care model, the curriculum’s lowest-syncretism-risk doctrine.
  • Filipino women’s culturally-esteemed devotional leadership (leading rosaries, novenas, catechism) offers a respectful bridge concept for explaining 1 Timothy 2:9-15’s distinctions without needing to adjudicate the wider complementarian/egalitarian debate.
  • The Santo Niño/Incarnation connection, already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline, gets a natural reinforcement point in 1 Timothy 3:16’s Christ-hymn — an opportunity to anchor the historical Incarnation doctrine twice across the pipeline’s curricula with consistent framing.
  • Filipino’s existing “budhi” (conscience) concept is doctrinally compatible and requires only refinement (needing to be rightly informed by truth), not wholesale replacement — a lower-effort Medium-risk term relative to the Critical-tier cluster.
  1. Prioritize theologian review capacity for the 5 Critical doctrines (Qualifications for Church Leadership, Christ as the One Mediator, Church as Pillar of Truth, Guarding the Deposit of Faith, Incarnation/Mystery of Godliness) before any other Phase 2 work begins.
  2. Lock the overseer/deacon/mediator/mystery/pillar/deposit term set in assets/translation_memory.json (Step 9) as immutable pending theologian sign-off; block any Phase 2 worker substitution of “obispo” or Sacred-Tradition-adjacent framing.
  3. Route 1 Timothy 2:5-6, 3:16, 2:11-15, and 3:11 for first-priority human theologian review ahead of general Phase 2 batch processing, given their combined doctrinal severity and collision probability.
  4. Brief all Phase 2 translators and reviewers on the prosperity-gospel collision at 6:5-10 as a live, not merely historical, pastoral risk specific to this letter and this destination culture.
  5. Confirm the YouVersion MBB version ID (399, flagged pending in 05_translation_landscape.md) with the pipeline maintainer before Phase 2 hyperlink generation begins.
