Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — 2 Peter Filipino Language Package

Why it matters

2 Peter equips Filipino believers to stand firm against denial of Christ’s return and against exploitative false teachers — while introducing genuinely new theological vocabulary (“partakers of the divine nature,” “carried along by the Holy Spirit,” “the Day of the Lord,” “the patience of God”) into a Filipino religious landscape already densely populated with folk-Catholic devotional categories, animist ancestor-veneration (anito), spiritist trance practice (espiritismo), and the fatalistic-resignation idiom (bahala na) the Romans baseline already had to fence off. This Language Package extends that baseline into five new Critical-risk zones no prior curriculum in this pipeline has addressed, plus the highest-stakes eschatology content the pipeline has yet produced.

Key findings

  • 130 terms are now enforced in the 2 Peter translation memory: 21 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (biyaya, Panginoon, Espiritu Santo, Diyos, kaligtasan, katuwiran, kaluwalhatian, etc.) plus 109 new terms proposed and risk-tiered for this curriculum.
  • 8 Critical-risk terms and 26 High-risk terms (34 total) require mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence — up from the Romans baseline’s smaller Critical/High footprint, driven largely by 2 Peter’s dense eschatological and inspiration-of-Scripture content concentrated in the core passage (1:16–21) and chapter 3.
  • 23 doctrine-risk entries across 21 unique doctrines: 6 Critical, 6 High, 10 Medium, 1 Low. 12 doctrine entries require human theologian review, 10 require native speaker review, and 1 is automated-review-sufficient.
  • Six doctrines carry new Critical risk distinct from anything in the Romans baseline: Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption (1:3–4), Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture (1:16–21; 3:2, 16), The Certainty of Christ’s Return (1:16, 19; 3:3–4, 12), The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment (3:7, 10–13), Patience of God’s Timing (3:9, 15), and a re-anchored Salvation (3:15) compounding two Critical risks in a single clause.
  • The core passage itself (2 Peter 1:16–21) contains two of the six Critical-risk terms (propesiya ng Kasulatan, dinala ng Espiritu Santo) plus the parousia Critical risk — making it the single most concentrated risk zone in the entire curriculum.

Risks

  • Highest risk, book-wide: mga makabahagi sa banal na kalikasan (“partakers of the divine nature,” 1:4) can collapse into anito ancestor-deification, LDS-style exaltation theology, or mechanistic sacramental theosis if unfenced — no prior Language Package artifact in this pipeline has faced this specific syncretism vector.
  • Highest-frequency risk: pagtitiyaga ng Panginoon (“patience of God,” 3:9, 15) sits one idiom away from bahala na, the Romans baseline’s existing forbidden providence-substitution — now extended into new, doctrinally load-bearing territory at the letter’s rhetorical climax.
  • Highest cultural-collision risk: Araw ng Panginoon (“Day of the Lord,” 3:7, 10) must be actively fenced against Araw ng mga Kaluluwa (All Souls’ Day), a widely observed annual Filipino Catholic folk holiday with surface-level thematic overlap but opposite theological content.
  • Highest sectarian-sensitivity risk: sariling pakahulugan (“one’s own interpretation,” 1:20) risks reinforcing magisterial-authority-only readings of Scripture in a Catholic-majority context, and the single-referent “God and Savior” construction (1:1, 3:18) must not echo Jehovah’s Witnesses’ or Iglesia ni Cristo’s non-Trinitarian rendering pressure on the same verses.
  • Highest interdenominational-misuse risk: mga bulaang guro (“false teachers,” ch. 2) is already live vocabulary in Philippine interdenominational polemics; translators must anchor every use to the text’s own four criteria, not sectarian rivalry.

Opportunities

  • Filipino already has rich, well-understood virtue vocabulary (kabutihang-asal, pagpipigil sa sarili, pagtitiyaga, pag-ibig) that maps naturally onto 2 Peter’s 1:5–8 virtue chain, requiring fencing rather than new coinage — a comparatively low-cost translation win once anchored to grace (1:3–4) rather than self-effort.
  • The Filipino cultural value of pananampalataya as personal trust is already well-established from the Romans baseline, giving 2 Peter’s faith and calling/election vocabulary (1:1, 1:10) a stable foundation requiring only native speaker (not theologian) review.
  • Because Filipino Catholic catechesis already affirms Christ’s deity, Sonship, and bodily resurrection/return in principle, the primary 2 Peter task for Deity/Sonship/Lordship doctrines is devotional re-centering, not doctrinal introduction — a lighter lift than the five newly Critical eschatology/inspiration doctrines.
  • Transliterating Tartaro (rather than paraphrasing into existing afterlife vocabulary) turns a potential silent-conflation risk with Purgatoryo into a built-in teaching moment, modeling a reusable strategy for future curricula with similarly crowded semantic neighborhoods.
  1. Route all segments containing the six new Critical-risk terms/doctrines to human theologian review at every occurrence, not just first appearance, per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  2. Apply the mandatory teaching note to mga makabahagi sa banal na kalikasan, propesiya ng Kasulatan, dinala/kinasihan ng Espiritu Santo, pagparito, Araw ng Panginoon, and pagtitiyaga ng Panginoon at every occurrence without exception, before any segment is marked approved.
  3. Pre-brief Phase 2 human reviewers on the five cult/sect rendering patterns flagged in 05_translation_landscape.md §4 (JW, INC, LDS, folk-espiritismo tracts) so drafts can be checked against known problematic precedents, not just against the glossary in isolation.
  4. Confirm the YouVersion MBBTAG numeric version ID before generating any production hyperlinks for this curriculum; do not hard-code an unverified ID.
  5. Carry forward all 21 baseline-inherited terms without modification, and treat any Phase 2 discovery of additional new terms as an update to assets/translation_memory.json requiring immediate version increment and re-broadcast to all parallel workers.
