Biblical Theme Map

10 Biblical Theme Map — Hebrews

1. The Letter’s Argumentative Architecture

Hebrews is structured as an extended sermon-argument built on a single comparative claim, developed through an alternating pattern of doctrinal exposition and pastoral warning. Understanding this architecture is essential for translation, because the warning passages (chs. 2, 3-4, 6, 10, 12) are not detours from the doctrinal argument — they are its intended application, and both must carry matching theological weight in Filipino.

1.1 The “Christ Is Greater Than…” Comparative Chain

ComparisonHebrews PassageWhat Is SurpassedBasis of Superiority
Christ > Angels1:1-2:18Angelic mediation of the old revelation (implicit, cf. Acts 7:53; Galatians 3:19)The Son’s unique deity and enthronement (Psalm 2:7; Psalm 110:1)
Christ > Moses3:1-6Moses as faithful servant in God’s houseChrist as faithful Son over God’s house
Christ > Joshua4:1-11The rest Joshua’s generation failed to enterThe greater Sabbath-rest available now by faith
Christ > Aaron/the Levitical high priests4:14-7:28The Aaronic priesthood’s mortality, sin, and repetitionChrist’s sinless, eternal, Melchizedekian priesthood
Christ’s covenant > the Mosaic covenant8:1-13The Sinai covenant’s external, breakable termsThe New Covenant’s internal, permanent terms (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
Christ’s sacrifice > Levitical sacrifices9:1-10:18Repeated animal sacrifices, unable to cleanse the conscienceChrist’s once-for-all self-offering
Christ’s blood > sprinkled blood/ashes9:13-14; 12:24External, ceremonial cleansingInward cleansing of the conscience
The heavenly Jerusalem > Mount Sinai12:18-24Terror, distance, and inaccessibilityJoyful, confident access to God

This chain is the letter’s spine. Every curriculum doctrine below attaches to one or more links in this chain.

1.2 The Exposition-Warning Alternation

Exposition (doctrine)Warning (application)
1:1-14 — The Son’s supremacy over angels2:1-4 — Danger of neglecting so great a salvation
2:5-18 — Christ’s incarnate solidarity and priesthood3:1-4:13 — Danger of hardened, unbelieving hearts (the wilderness generation)
4:14-7:28 — Christ’s superior priesthood5:11-6:20 — Danger of spiritual immaturity and falling away
8:1-10:18 — The New Covenant and the once-for-all sacrifice10:19-39 — Danger of willfully spurning Christ’s sacrifice
11:1-40 — Faith of the OT saints (positive exemplars)12:1-29 — Call to endurance; danger of rejecting grace (Esau)
13:1-25 — Closing exhortations grounded in the whole argument

Translation implication: the warning passages must never be softened relative to the doctrinal expositions that precede them, nor may the doctrinal expositions be flattened into mere warning-avoidance material. Both carry independent, mutually reinforcing doctrinal weight — this is the same balance the baseline requires between “Perseverance and Assurance” and “Danger of Apostasy” as two poles of one held-together truth, not competing doctrines.

2. Theme-by-Theme Canonical Trace

Each of the nine curriculum doctrines is mapped below across its Old Testament roots, its treatment within Hebrews, its parallels elsewhere in the New Testament (with explicit attention to Romans, per the baseline Language Package this curriculum extends), and the specific Filipino cultural lens that governs its translation risk.

2.1 The Superiority of Christ over Angels, Moses, and the Levitical Priesthood

LayerContent
OT rootsAngels as heavenly mediators/messengers (Genesis 28:12; Psalm 103:20-21); Moses as covenant mediator (Exodus 3-4; Numbers 12:7); the Aaronic priesthood (Exodus 28-29; Leviticus 8-9)
Hebrews treatmentHebrews 1:1-14 (angels); 3:1-6 (Moses); 4:14-7:28 (priesthood)
NT/Romans parallelsColossians 1:15-20 and Philippians 2:6-11 (Christ’s supremacy over all creation and powers); Romans does not run this specific comparative argument, but shares its underlying Christology (Romans 8:34’s enthroned Christ; Romans 1:4’s Son “declared” in power)
Filipino cultural lensHigh — Filipino Catholic devotional intensity toward guardian angels (Anghel de la Guarda) and the ongoing sacramental priesthood (mga pari) makes this comparative argument uniquely load-bearing in this Language Package; Moses comparison carries comparatively lower collision risk.
Baseline cross-referenceExtends baseline son_of_god, lord (Critical/High) into new comparative territory not present in Romans.

2.2 Christ as the Great High Priest

LayerContent
OT rootsAaronic high priesthood (Exodus 28; Leviticus 16, 21); Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-20; Psalm 110:4)
Hebrews treatment2:17; 3:1; 4:14-5:10; 6:20; 7:1-28; 8:1-4; 9:11,25
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 8:34 (“Christ Jesus… is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us”) is the closest Romans parallel — a brief intercessory statement Hebrews expands into a full priesthood theology; 1 Timothy 2:5 (“one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”); 1 John 2:1 (Christ as advocate)
Filipino cultural lensCritical — the single highest-collision doctrine in this curriculum, given the Philippines’ majority-Catholic ordained priesthood performing ongoing sacramental mediation (confession, the Mass). Every high priest reference requires the teaching note established in 08_core_glossary.md.
Baseline cross-referenceBuilds directly on baseline intercession (pamamagitan, Critical) but extends it to the priestly office itself, not merely the act of praying on another’s behalf — a distinction that must be preserved in Filipino teaching material.

2.3 The New Covenant versus the Old

LayerContent
OT rootsThe Mosaic covenant at Sinai (Exodus 19-24); the New Covenant promise (Jeremiah 31:31-34; cf. Ezekiel 36:26-27)
Hebrews treatment7:22; 8:1-13; 9:15-22; 10:16-17,29; 12:24; 13:20
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 7:6 (“we serve… in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the letter”); Romans 11:27 (covenant-renewal language, Isaiah-sourced, thematically parallel to Jeremiah 31 — see 09_cross_reference_analysis.md Rule 5); 2 Corinthians 3:6-11; Galatians 3:15-25; Luke 22:20 (Christ’s words at the Last Supper)
Filipino cultural lensCritical — “Bagong Tipan” is also the everyday Filipino name for the New Testament canon, requiring context to distinguish the covenant-relationship from the book collection at every occurrence.
Baseline cross-referenceExtends baseline covenant (tipan, High) with the specific “kainē” (new) qualifier not emphasized to this degree in Romans.

2.4 The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice

LayerContent
OT rootsThe Levitical sacrificial system generally (Leviticus 1-7); the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16); the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53)
Hebrews treatment2:17; 7:27; 9:12-14,25-28; 10:1-14,18; 13:11-12
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 3:25 (Christ as ἱλαστήριον, “propitiation”/“mercy seat” — the single closest Romans parallel to this whole doctrine, though rendered differently since Romans’s ἱλαστήριον is not carried in the baseline translation memory under that specific gloss); 1 Peter 3:18; 1 John 2:2; 1 Corinthians 5:7 (Christ our Passover)
Filipino cultural lensCritical — the single most direct doctrinal collision with the Filipino Catholic Mass understood as an ongoing re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice. This is the doctrine around which the largest concentration of Critical-risk terms in the entire curriculum cluster (ἅπαξ/ἐφάπαξ, blood, offer, propitiation).
Baseline cross-referenceParallels but exceeds the doctrinal weight of any single baseline Romans term; functions as this curriculum’s equivalent to the baseline’s salvation/imputed_righteousness cluster in terms of required teaching-note density.

2.5 The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages

LayerContent
OT rootsThe wilderness generation’s unbelief (Numbers 14; Psalm 95:7-11); Esau’s forfeited birthright (Genesis 25:29-34; 27:30-40)
Hebrews treatment2:1-4; 3:7-4:13; 6:4-8; 10:26-31; 12:15-17,25
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 11:20-22 (“if you do not continue in his kindness, you too will be cut off”); 1 Corinthians 10:1-12 (the same wilderness generation used as warning)
Filipino cultural lensHigh — must be taught alongside Perseverance and Assurance (2.7 below) as two poles of one truth; overemphasis risks either inducing anxious sacramental performance-seeking (reinforcing the very folk-Catholic works-framework the curriculum otherwise corrects) or trivializing real spiritual danger.
Baseline cross-referenceNo direct baseline equivalent in Romans; this is a Hebrews-specific doctrinal emphasis requiring new risk-registry entries.

2.6 Faith of the Old Testament Saints

LayerContent
OT rootsThe patriarchal and covenant narratives generally (Genesis-2 Samuel; Joshua; Judges)
Hebrews treatment11:1-40 (definitional and exemplar-driven); 6:12; 10:38-39 (transitional)
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 4:1-25 (Abraham’s faith, directly quoting Genesis 15:6); Galatians 3:6-9; James 2:21-23 — see 09_cross_reference_analysis.md Rule 4 for the required non-contradictory framing between Romans’s forensic emphasis and Hebrews’s active-obedience emphasis
Filipino cultural lensMedium — comparatively low direct cultural collision; the main task is OT background teaching for a long list of unfamiliar or partially-familiar figures (Gideon, Barak, Jephthah).
Baseline cross-referenceDirectly extends baseline faith (pananampalataya, Medium); Hebrews 11:1 supplies this curriculum’s programmatic definition, which the baseline Romans package does not attempt.

2.7 Perseverance and Assurance

LayerContent
OT rootsGod’s covenant faithfulness (Deuteronomy 7:9; Psalm 89:33-34); the promise to Joshua/Israel of God’s abiding presence (Deuteronomy 31:6)
Hebrews treatment3:6,14; 4:14; 6:11-12,18-19; 10:22-23,35-36; 12:1-3; 13:5-6
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 8:31-39 (the closest and most structurally significant Romans parallel — “nothing can separate us”; baseline doctrine assurance_of_salvation, High); John 10:28-29; Philippians 1:6
Filipino cultural lensHigh — assurance must rest on Christ’s finished work and God’s character, not on ongoing sacramental performance, exactly paralleling the baseline’s assurance_of_salvation teaching note; Hebrews’s warning passages make this pairing especially delicate to render without contradiction.
Baseline cross-referenceDirectly extends baseline assurance_of_salvation (Critical passages: Romans 8:1, 8:28-39); Hebrews adds the warning-passage counterweight the Romans treatment does not carry to the same degree.

2.8 Access to God through Christ’s Blood

LayerContent
OT rootsThe restricted, fear-laden approach to the tabernacle/temple (Leviticus 16:2; Exodus 19:12-13, 21-24); the veil separating the Holy of Holies (Exodus 26:31-33)
Hebrews treatment4:16; 6:19-20; 9:8; 10:19-22; 12:18-24
NT/Romans parallelsRomans 5:1-2 (“we have peace with God… through whom we have also obtained access [προσαγωγή] by faith into this grace in which we stand” — the closest direct Romans parallel, using a cognate concept though not the identical Greek verb Hebrews uses); Ephesians 2:18; Matthew 27:51 (the temple veil torn at Christ’s death — a direct fulfillment-event parallel to Hebrews 10:20’s veil-as-flesh imagery)
Filipino cultural lensCritical — the doctrinal capstone that ties together the priesthood, sacrifice, and mediator themes into a single practical claim: no additional human or saintly intermediary is needed or available to add to Christ’s completed access-granting work.
Baseline cross-referenceExtends baseline peace_with_god (kapayapaan, Medium) into a more emphatically Critical register, given Hebrews’s direct engagement with the Filipino intercession-of-saints devotional practice that Romans’s peace doctrine does not directly confront.

2.9 Cross-Doctrine Synthesis: How the Nine Doctrines Interlock

The nine curriculum doctrines are not nine independent topics but a single unfolding argument, visualized below:

Christ's Person (superior to angels, Moses)

Christ's Office (Great High Priest, after Melchizedek, not Aaron)

Christ's Work (once-for-all atoning sacrifice, His own blood)

├──► establishes ──► New Covenant (superior to the Old)

└──► secures ──► Access to God (torn veil, confident approach)

                  Believer's Response:
├─ Faith (modeled by the OT saints, ch. 11)
                  ├─ Perseverance and Assurance (hold fast, ch. 3-4, 6, 10, 12)
└─ Warning against Apostasy (do not spurn what Christ secured)

This synthesis should govern how Phase 2 translation work sequences its teaching notes: the Critical-risk terms in section 2.2-2.4 and 2.8 (high priest, mediator, blood, once-for-all, new covenant, draw near/access) are the argument’s structural load points, and any translation drift in one of them will compromise the coherence of the doctrines built on it.

3. Cross-Reference to Baseline Romans Doctrines
