Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Revelation 1–22 (English → Filipino)

Purpose and Method

This analysis catalogs every load-bearing Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every meaningful parallel to the Romans Language Package (the only other curriculum currently translated in this Language Package) across the entire book of Revelation, chapter by chapter. Citations are normalized in “Book Chapter:Verse” form (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Romans 15:12”) for cross-referencing consistency across the whole TRI pipeline, regardless of destination-language book-name conventions (Pahayag, Roma, etc.), which remain governed by the baseline’s citation-format rules for translated output.

Revelation is, proportionally, the most OT-saturated book in the New Testament — scholarly counts range from roughly 250 to over 500 allusions, almost never as formal introduced quotations (“as it is written…”) but as woven allusive echo. This analysis focuses on load-bearing connections: those that carry doctrinal weight for this curriculum’s nine core doctrines, that a Filipino audience needs explicit help tracing, or that create translation-consistency obligations with the Romans package.

This document should be read together with analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md and analysis/08_core_glossary.md, whose fixed Filipino renderings this document reuses exactly and never contradicts.

Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Formulas

These rules govern Phase 2 translation wherever the same OT source-text, or the same phrase shared between Revelation and Romans, recurs. They extend the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents.”

RulePassages InvolvedRequirement
1Isaiah 25:8 (“wipe away every tear”) echoed at Revelation 7:17 and Revelation 21:4Render identically at both occurrences; do not vary vocabulary between the two.
2”Alpha and Omega… beginning and end” (Isaiah 44:6; 48:12) at Revelation 1:8, 21:6, 22:13Render the whole title-family identically at all three occurrences.
3”Faithful and True” at Revelation 3:14, 19:11, 21:5Render identically (Matapat at Totoo) at every occurrence; this deliberate verbal echo links Christ’s own character (3:14, 19:11) to God’s character at the new creation’s inauguration (21:5).
4Isaiah 60:1–3, 5, 11, 19–20 (light, open gates, kings’ glory) echoed at Revelation 21:23–25 and 22:5Render the “no need of sun/lamp… the Lord is their light” formula identically in both places.
5Psalm 2:8–9 / Daniel 7:13–14 (rule with an iron rod; everlasting kingdom) at Revelation 2:26–27, 12:5, 19:15Keep “rod of iron” (setro/tungkod na bakal) and kingdom-language consistent across all three occurrences.
6Genesis 3:15 (the serpent-crushing promise) echoed at Romans 16:20 (“God will soon crush Satan under your feet”) and at Revelation 12:9, 17; 20:2, 10Keep Satanas/Diyablo and “ancient serpent” (matandang ahas) vocabulary aligned across both curricula; teach Romans 16:20 and Revelation 12/20 together as one unfolding fulfillment of the Genesis 3:15 promise.
72 Samuel 7:14 (Davidic sonship formula, “I will be his father, he will be my son”) underlying both Romans’ adoption doctrine (Romans 8:14–17, 29) and Revelation 21:7Keep the baseline’s pag-ampon (adoption) doctrine and the derived-sonship anak rendering at Revelation 21:7 mutually reinforcing, while never allowing either to be confused with the fixed, exclusive Anak ng Diyos (Christ’s unique Sonship).
8Isaiah 11:1, 10 (“root of Jesse/David”) quoted directly at Romans 15:12 and echoed at Revelation 5:5 and 22:16Keep the “root/lahi ni David” word-family (built on the baseline’s fixed lahi ni David) consistent across Romans 15:12, Revelation 5:5, and Revelation 22:16.
9Ecclesiastes 12:14 / Psalm 62:12 (“God will repay according to deeds”) echoed at Romans 2:6 and Revelation 20:12–13Render the “according to what they have done” (ayon sa kanilang mga gawa) formula consistently across both curricula, and pair every occurrence with the same Critical-risk caution already fixed for kaligtasan — final standing rests on belonging to Christ (the book of life), not on works considered as merit.
10Deuteronomy 10:17 / Daniel 2:47 (“Lord of lords”) underlying Revelation 17:14 and 19:16, alongside the Romans 10:9 confession “Si Jesus ay Panginoon”Reuse baseline Panginoon exactly in all instances; teach Romans 10:9 and Revelation 17:14/19:16 as the confession-form and consummation-form of one Lordship doctrine.
11Genesis 15:6 / Romans 4:3 (imputed righteousness, credited by faith) alongside Revelation 19:8 (“the righteous deeds of the saints,” granted as fine linen)Do NOT conflate. Teaching note required: Romans 4:3’s katuwirang ibinilang (imputed righteousness) is a forensic legal status credited at the moment of faith; Revelation 19:8’s granted “righteous acts” describes the Spirit-produced, Christ-given adornment of the already-justified Bride — both are gifts, not earned merit, but they answer different doctrinal questions and must not be flattened into one concept.
12Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by his faith,” Romans 1:17’s thesis) alongside Revelation’s repeated “the one who overcomes” (ho nikōn) and “keep the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12)Teach as complementary: Romans 1:17 states the thesis (righteousness by faith, lived out); Revelation dramatizes the same faith enduring under the pressure of persecution to the very end.

Revelation 1:5; 5:9; 7:14Romans 3:24–25; 5:9Redemption/atonement by Christ’s bloodBoth frame salvation as accomplished by Christ’s blood, not ritual; reinforce baseline kaligtasan Critical-risk note in both curricula.
Revelation 20:11–15Romans 8:1; 2:6Final judgment / no condemnation for believersTeach together: Romans 8:1 states the believer’s assurance; Revelation 20 dramatizes the final courtroom scene it presupposes.
Revelation 17:14Romans 8:28–30; 9:11–12Election/calling (“called, chosen, faithful”)Reuse baseline pagkahirang and tinawag exactly in both curricula.
Revelation 19:16; 17:14Romans 10:9Lordship of ChristReuse baseline Panginoon exactly; teach the confession-form (Romans 10:9) and consummation-form (Revelation 19:16) together.
Revelation 7:9; 21:12–14Romans 9–11Unity of Jews and GentilesBoth texts picture one redeemed people from every nation; avoid any two-class reading in either curriculum.
Revelation 5:9–10; 1:6Romans 12:1Priesthood/living sacrifice of all believersReuse saserdote, never pari, in both curricula’s priesthood language.
Revelation 21:1–5Romans 8:18–25Creation’s groaning and its renewalTeach Romans 8:18–25 as the “already, not yet” tension that Revelation 21:1–5 resolves.
Revelation 12:9, 17; 20:2, 10Romans 16:20Satan’s certain defeatKeep vocabulary aligned per Rule 6.
Revelation 19:8Romans 4:3Righteousness as gift, not meritDistinguish per Rule 11; both are gift-language, but answer different doctrinal questions.
Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21; 21:7Romans 8:37Overcoming/conquering by Christ’s victoryKeep the nikaō semantic field (“overcomer,” “more than conquerors”) theologically aligned: victory in both is Christ’s own, appropriated by faith, never autonomous achievement.
Revelation 20:12–13Romans 2:6Judgment “according to deeds”Render the formula identically per Rule 9.
