Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John

Destination language: Filipino (Tagalog)

Methodology

Per PRD Phase 1 Step 3, this analysis identifies every Old Testament quotation and allusion across the full text of John 1–21, every messianic reference, every type/antitype pairing, and every substantive doctrinal or textual parallel to the Romans Language Package already fixed as the baseline for this language pair. Each row records: the John passage, its theme, the character(s) involved, its OT/NT connection (with normalized citation), and a translation-sensitivity flag. Rendering-consistency rules for quotations and themes shared between John and Romans close the document.

Citation format rule: All references in this document and downstream Phase 2 outputs follow BookName chapter:verse (e.g., John 3:16, Isaiah 53:7, Genesis 15:6). Filipino-language citation format in rendered materials follows the baseline convention (Roma 3:23 style): book name per MBB/Ang Biblia, Arabic numerals.

PART 1 — CROSS-REFERENCE MATRIX (Chapter by Chapter)

Chapter 1

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 1:1Deity and Pre-existence of Christthe Word (Logos)Allusion: Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning”) — John deliberately opens with the creation formula, identifying the Word as active before and in creation. NT parallel: Romans 11:36 (“from him and through him and to him are all things”).High — must preserve “in the beginning” as a temporal claim of pre-existence, not a mere literary opening.
John 1:3Deity of Christ; Creationthe WordAllusion: Genesis 1:1-3 (creation by divine speech); Psalm 33:6, 9. NT parallel: Romans 1:20 (creation reveals God).Medium
John 1:14Incarnationthe Word, JesusAllusion: Exodus 25:8, 40:34-35 (tabernacle, God “dwelling”/eskēnōsen echoes tabernacling presence); Exodus 33:18-23, 34:6 (“grace and truth” = ḥesed we’emet, God’s covenant character to Moses). NT parallel: baseline pagkakatawang-tao (Critical, Romans registry cross-reference).Critical — reuse baseline incarnation term exactly; Santo Niño devotional-image collision risk applies here as in Romans.
John 1:17Grace; Law and GospelMoses, Jesus ChristDirect contrast: “the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” OT: Exodus 34:6-7 (Moses receiving the Law and beholding God’s ḥesed). NT parallel: Romans 6:14 (“not under law but under grace”), Romans 10:4.High — must preserve the grace/law contrast without implying the Law itself was without grace-content in its own covenant context; consistent with baseline grace entry (never utang na loob).
John 1:23Forerunner/Messianic preparationJohn the BaptistDirect quotation: Isaiah 40:3 (“the voice of one crying in the wilderness…”).Medium — standard messianic-preparation citation; low cultural-collision risk.
John 1:29, 1:36Christ’s Substitutionary DeathJohn the Baptist, JesusTypology: Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Genesis 22:8 (Abraham/Isaac, “God will provide the lamb”); direct allusion: Isaiah 53:7 (the servant led like a lamb to slaughter). NT parallel: Romans 3:25 (propitiation), Romans 8:32 (God gave his own Son).High — reuse Kordero ng Diyos; must retain substitutionary-sacrifice sense per 08_core_glossary.md §37.
John 1:45, 1:49Messianic PromisePhilip, Nathanael, JesusGeneral appeal to “Moses and the Prophets” and to Nathanael’s confession “Son of God… King of Israel.” OT background: Deuteronomy 18:15 (prophet like Moses); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic king). NT parallel: Romans 1:2-4 (gospel “promised beforehand through his prophets”).Medium
John 1:51Deity and Pre-existence of ChristJesus, NathanaelAllusion: Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder, angels ascending/descending) — Jesus presents himself as the greater reality Jacob’s vision anticipated, the locus of heaven-earth connection.Medium — requires OT-background teaching note; no direct Filipino cultural collision.

Chapter 2

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 2:1-11Messianic sign; abundance of the kingdomJesus, Mary, disciplesAllusion: Isaiah 25:6 (messianic banquet with wine), Amos 9:13-14 (eschatological abundance).Medium
John 2:17Zeal for God’s houseJesus, disciplesDirect quotation: Psalm 69:9 (“zeal for your house will consume me”). Shared-Psalm alert: Psalm 69 recurs at John 15:25 and 19:28-29, and is quoted in Romans 11:9-10 (Psalm 69:22-23) and Romans 15:3 (Psalm 69:9).High — see Part 3 rendering-consistency rule on Psalm 69 below; this is a directly shared quoted Psalm between the John and Romans curricula.
John 2:19-21Resurrection; Christ’s body as true templeJesus, Jewish leadersAllusion: 1 Kings 6 / 2 Chronicles 3 (Solomon’s temple); reinterpretation anticipates the crucifixion/resurrection. NT parallel: Romans 6:4-5 (resurrection life).Medium/High — preserve the wordplay (physical temple / Christ’s body) with a translator note.

NT parallel: Romans 6:4 (buried/raised with Christ into new life), Romans 8:9-11 (Spirit indwelling).Critical — see baseline framing; new-birth teaching must not collapse into automatic sacramental regeneration.
John 3:8The Holy Spirit as Counselor (introductory wind/Spirit motif)Jesus, NicodemusAllusion: Ecclesiastes 11:5 (the way of the wind/spirit is unknowable); Ezekiel 37:9 (“breath,” same Heb. ruach / Gk. pneuma wordplay).High
John 3:13-14Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Christ’s Substitutionary Death (typology)Jesus, Moses (referenced), Israel (referenced)Direct typology: Numbers 21:4-9 (bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness). Messianic/pre-existence claim: descent from heaven, cf. Proverbs 30:4 (“who has ascended to heaven and come down?”), Daniel 7:13-14 (Son of Man). NT parallel: Romans 10:6-7 (echoing “who will ascend/descend,” itself citing Deuteronomy 30:12-13).High — OT-background note on Numbers 21 required; NT parallel to Romans 10:6-7 strengthens cross-curriculum teaching continuity.
John 3:16God’s Love for the World; Eternal Life through FaithGod (the Father), the SonNo direct OT quotation, but summarizes covenant-love (ḥesed) themes of Exodus 34:6, Deuteronomy 7:7-8, Jeremiah 31:3 (“I have loved you with an everlasting love”). NT parallel: Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that… Christ died for us”), Romans 8:32, Romans 8:38-39.High/Critical — reuse the doctrinal-continuity note between John 3:16 and Romans 5:8/8:32 (God’s initiating, sacrificial love as ground of salvation) in Phase 2 teaching material.
John 3:17-18Judgment and Belief/UnbeliefJesus, “the world,” “whoever”Allusion: general judgment theology of Psalm 1, Psalm 7:11; NT parallel: Romans 2:12-16 (judgment according to the law/conscience), Romans 8:1 (“no condemnation”).High — see baseline Assurance of Salvation cross-reference.

Chapter 5

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 5:18Deity of ChristJesus, Jewish leadersDirect inference from Jesus calling God “my Father” — a genuine deity claim John’s narrative endorses. NT parallel: Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”).Critical
John 5:23Unity of the Father and the SonJesusCross-reference: honor due to God alone (Isaiah 42:8, “I am the LORD… my glory I give to no other”) now explicitly extended to the Son. NT parallel: Philippians 2:9-11 (every knee shall bow to Jesus); Romans 14:11 (citing Isaiah 45:23).Critical — must preserve equal-honor claim as a deity affirmation, not lesser derivative honor.
John 5:29Judgment; ResurrectionJesusAllusion: Daniel 12:2 (“some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt” — the clearest OT two-destiny resurrection text). NT parallel: Romans 2:6-11 (God’s righteous judgment “to each according to his deeds”).High
John 5:39, 5:45-47Inspiration and Fulfillment of Scripture; Messianic PromiseJesus, Moses (referenced)Direct appeal: “Moses… wrote of me.” OT background: Deuteronomy 18:15-19 (prophet like Moses); broader Pentateuchal messianic anticipation (Genesis 3:15, Genesis 49:10). NT parallel: Romans 1:2 (“promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures”), Romans 3:21 (“the Law and the Prophets bear witness”).Medium — strong direct parallel to baseline’s Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine; reuse teaching approach.

Chapter 6

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 6:31, 6:49Bread of Life / manna typologyJesus, the crowdDirect quotation: Psalm 78:24 (“he gave them bread from heaven to eat”), citing Exodus 16:4, 15. NT parallel: 1 Corinthians 10:3-4 (spiritual food/drink typology, Paul’s parallel use of Exodus wilderness imagery).High — manna typology fulfilled/superseded in Christ; must not diminish the historicity of the Exodus account while teaching typological fulfillment.
John 6:35, 48, 51Eternal Life through Faith; first “I am” statementJesusSee 08_core_glossary.md §C.1. NT parallel: Romans 10:9-10 (confession leading to salvation) — both texts ground salvation in personal reception of Christ, not ritual performance alone.High
John 6:44Divine Calling; Effectual Callingthe Father, JesusContextual echo: Jeremiah 31:3 (“I have drawn you with lovingkindness” — same “drawing” concept in the LXX tradition); Isaiah 55:1-3 (God’s initiative in drawing people to himself). NT parallel: baseline election/pagkahirang (Romans 8:28-30, 9:11-12), Romans 9:16 (“not of him who wills… but of God who has mercy”).High — direct doctrinal parallel to baseline’s Effectual Calling entry; reuse baseline’s “not swerte/kapalaran” framing.
John 6:45Inspiration of Scripture; New Covenant teachingJesusDirect quotation: Isaiah 54:13 (“they shall all be taught by God”).Medium
John 6:53-56Christ’s Substitutionary Death (typological/sacramental-sensitive)Jesus, the crowd, disciplesTypological background: Exodus 12 (Passover meal, participatory eating); Leviticus 17:11 (blood = life, sacrificial atonement principle). NT parallel: Romans 3:25 (propitiation by his blood); 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (Lord’s Supper institution — outside this curriculum but doctrinally adjacent).Critical — see 08_core_glossary.md §25 and Governance Note 4; mandatory teaching note distinguishing this from transubstantiation doctrine.

Chapter 7

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 7:22Law and the SabbathJesus, Jewish leadersDirect reference: Genesis 17:12, Leviticus 12:3 (circumcision on the eighth day, overriding Sabbath rest by rabbinic tradition). NT parallel: Romans 2:25-29 (true circumcision of the heart).Medium

John 8:56 — “Abraham rejoiced to see my day” — a direct pre-existence/typological claim. NT parallel: Romans 4:1-25 (Abraham as the pattern of faith-righteousness, directly citing Genesis 15:6). Shared patriarch alert: Abraham is a major cross-curriculum figure — Romans 4 develops him as the paradigm of justification by faith; John 8 develops him as one who anticipated Christ’s day.High — see Part 3 rendering-consistency rule on Abraham below.
John 8:44Sin; JudgmentJesus, Jewish leadersAllusion: Genesis 3:1-5 (the serpent’s deception), Genesis 4:8 (Cain, “a murderer from the beginning”). NT parallel: Romans 5:12 (sin entering through one man).Medium/High

Chapter 9

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 9:2-3, 9:34Sin and suffering; divine justiceJesus, disciples, the healed manAllusion (contrastive): Exodus 20:5 (generational consequence language, popularly misapplied); corrective background: Ezekiel 18:20, Deuteronomy 24:16 (individual responsibility); cf. Job 1-2, 42 (suffering without direct proportional guilt). NT parallel: Romans 9:20-21 (God’s sovereign purposes not reducible to human merit-calculus).Medium — chapter noted in 07 semantic analysis as introducing no new load-bearing terms; the OT-theology point here (suffering ≠ automatic proof of personal sin) is worth a teaching note given popular karma-adjacent folk reasoning risk.

Chapter 10

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 10:1-16The Good Shepherd (“I am” statement); Christ’s Substitutionary DeathJesusDirect typological background: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 23-24 (God himself shepherding, and his servant David as shepherd-king); Psalm 23; Isaiah 40:11. NT parallel: Romans 11:17-24 (olive tree, Gentile grafting); baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles.Medium — strong direct thematic parallel to baseline doctrine; reuse baseline’s teaching framing.
John 10:30Unity of the Father and the SonJesusNo single OT citation; theological culmination of Deuteronomy 6:4 (“the LORD is one,” the Shema) now including the Son within that divine oneness. NT parallel: Romans 9:5; 1 Corinthians 8:6 (outside curriculum but doctrinally adjacent).Critical
John 10:34Deity of Christ (defense against blasphemy charge)Jesus, Jewish leadersDirect quotation: Psalm 82:6 (“I said, you are gods”).High — requires careful teaching note: Jesus’s argument is a rabbinic qal wahomer (lesser-to-greater) argument, not a claim that his own deity is merely honorific like the psalm’s human judges; must not be misread as diminishing Christ’s unique deity.

Chapter 11

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 11:25Eternal Life; Resurrection (“I am” statement)Jesus, MarthaAllusion: Daniel 12:2; Ezekiel 37:1-14 (dry bones raised to life — a vivid OT type of resurrection Jesus now claims to embody personally). NT parallel: Romans 6:4-5, 8:11 (resurrection life through the Spirit).Critical

John 12:40Judgment and Belief/Unbeliefnarrator (citing Isaiah)Direct quotation: Isaiah 6:10 (“he has blinded their eyes…”).High — judicial hardening theme; NT parallel: Romans 11:8 (quoting the same Isaiah 6/29 tradition, “God gave them a spirit of stupor”). Shared Isaiah-hardening motif alert — see Part 3 rendering-consistency rule below.
John 12:41Deity and Pre-existence of Christnarrator, Isaiah (referenced)Direct theological claim: “Isaiah said these things because he saw his [Christ’s] glory” — identifying the throne-vision of Isaiah 6:1-5 as a vision of Christ’s own pre-incarnate glory.Critical — a strong, explicit pre-existence/deity claim; must not be flattened to “Isaiah saw God’s glory in general” without the Christ-specific identification the text makes.

Chapter 14

John PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
John 14:6Eternal Life; exclusivity of access to the Father (“I am” statement)JesusAllusion: Proverbs 3:17 (“her ways are ways of pleasantness”), but more directly a self-referential fulfillment of “the way” language of Isaiah 35:8, 40:3. NT parallel: baseline Universal Scope of the Gospel (Romans 1:16, 10:12-13) held alongside this exclusivity claim.Critical
John 14:16, 14:26The Holy Spirit as CounselorJesus, the Father, the SpiritNo direct OT quotation; conceptual background in the promised outpoured Spirit of Joel 2:28-29, Ezekiel 36:26-27. NT parallel: Romans 11:17-24 (olive tree — a related but distinct horticultural covenant-people metaphor; care needed not to conflate the vine and olive-tree images).Medium/High — teaching note should distinguish John’s vine (Christ himself as the true vine believers are grafted into) from Romans’s olive tree (the corporate people of God, Jew and Gentile together) — related but not identical images.
John 15:25Unjust hatred foretoldJesusDirect quotation: Psalm 35:19 / Psalm 69:4 (“they hated me without a cause”). Shared-Psalm alert: Psalm 69 again — see Part 3.High

PART 3 — PARALLELS TO ROMANS AND RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULES

This Language Package treats John and Romans as two documents within the same Filipino Bible-translation tradition; the same OT source text quoted or clearly alluded to in both curricula must be rendered identically in Filipino wherever the underlying Hebrew/Greek wording and doctrinal point are the same. The following convergences require explicit rendering-consistency governance in Phase 2.

3.1 Psalm 69 — shared quotations across both curricula

Psalm 69 is quoted or clearly echoed at John 2:17 (v.9a, zeal for God’s house), John 15:25 (v.4, hated without cause), John 19:28-29 (v.21, thirst/sour wine), and in Romans at Romans 11:9-10 (vv.22-23, concerning Israel) and Romans 15:3 (v.9b, “the reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me”).

Rendering-consistency rule: All quotations of Psalm 69 across both curricula must cite the Filipino Psalter (Mga Awit) using the identical established Filipino Bible wording for shared verses, and the citation format must read Mga Awit 69:[verse] in Filipino-facing material and Psalm 69:[verse] in normalized cross-reference material. A single translator note should be created and reused at every occurrence: Psalm 69 is a lament psalm of a righteous sufferer whom both John and Paul treat as directly, personally prefiguring Christ’s own suffering and rejection — this continuity should be taught explicitly to reinforce the two curricula’s shared christological reading of the Psalms.

3.2 Isaiah’s hardening/blindness motif (Isaiah 6:9-10, cf. Isaiah 29:10)

Quoted at John 12:40 and echoed in Romans at Romans 11:8 (drawing on the same Isaiah 6/29 hardening tradition, itself layered with Deuteronomy 29:4). Both curricula use this motif to explain persistent unbelief as, in part, a judicial outcome and not merely a private human choice made in a vacuum.

Rendering-consistency rule: Render Isaiah’s “blinded eyes/hardened heart” vocabulary consistently as binulag ang mga mata / pinatigas ang puso across both curricula’s teaching notes, and require a paired teaching note at both occurrences clarifying that this judicial hardening does not remove human responsibility for unbelief (John 3:19’s “people loved darkness” remains a willed response) — the same balance of divine sovereignty and human responsibility taught in Romans 9-11 applies to John’s judgment/unbelief doctrine.

3.3 Abraham as shared patriarchal figure (Genesis 12, 15, 17)

Romans 4 develops Abraham as the paradigm of justification by faith apart from works, directly quoting Genesis 15:6 (“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”). John 8:33-39, 56 develops Abraham as a figure who anticipated and rejoiced in Christ’s coming, and whose true “seed” is defined by faith-response to Christ rather than mere physical descent.

Rendering-consistency rule: The proper name Abraham is already fixed in Filipino Bible usage (no baseline entry needed; low risk, established loanword). The doctrinal continuity to preserve: both curricula teach that being a true child of Abraham is a matter of faith, not bloodline — Romans 4 develops this propositionally (imputed righteousness, reusing baseline katuwirang ibinilang, Critical risk), while John 8 develops it narratively (spiritual, not merely physical, sonship). A shared teaching note should cross-reference both passages so students encountering either curriculum recognize the same underlying doctrine.

3.4 The “ascend/descend” formula (Deuteronomy 30:12-13; Proverbs 30:4)

Romans 10:6-7 directly cites Deuteronomy 30:12-13 (“who will ascend into heaven?… who will descend into the abyss?”) reapplied to Christ’s incarnation and resurrection. John 3:13 makes the same ascend/descend claim about the Son of Man’s heavenly origin and return, without directly quoting Deuteronomy 30 but drawing on the same conceptual well (cf. also Proverbs 30:4).

Rendering-consistency rule: Render “ascend”/“descend” consistently as umakyat/pumanhik and bumaba/nanaog across both curricula (per 08_core_glossary.md §13), and flag both passages for a shared cross-curriculum teaching note: both texts locate the ground of salvation’s accessibility in Christ’s own completed heavenly-earthly mission, not in human striving to “ascend” toward God by religious achievement.

3.5 God’s initiating love as the ground of salvation (John 3:16 / Romans 5:8, 8:32)

No shared direct OT quotation, but a shared doctrinal architecture: both texts ground salvation in God’s own initiating, sacrificial love demonstrated in giving the Son, prior to and apart from human merit. Rendering-consistency rule: the Filipino renderings of “gave/gave up” (John 3:16 ibinigay; Romans 8:32 ibinigay) should remain lexically aligned across both curricula’s teaching materials to reinforce this shared doctrinal architecture — do not introduce a synonym in one curriculum that is not used in the other for the same underlying “God gave/handed over his Son” concept.

3.6 Election/drawing vocabulary (John 6:44 / Romans 8:28-30, 9:11-16)

Rendering-consistency rule: John’s “draw” (ἑλκύω, akitin/ilapit, 08_core_glossary.md §26) and baseline’s “election” (ἐκλογή, pagkahirang) are related but not lexically identical terms describing the same doctrine of God’s sovereign initiative from two angles (a verb of personal action in John; a noun of settled status in Romans). Both must carry the same forbidden-substitution guard already fixed in baseline: never rendered with swerte/kapalaran (luck/fate). A single cross-curriculum teaching note should state that John 6:44’s “drawing” and Romans 9’s “election” describe the same divine initiative in salvation from complementary angles.

3.7 Paraclete vs. Intercession — critical non-collision rule

Governance restated for cross-reference purposes: John’s παράκλητος / Mangaaliw (chs. 14-16) must never be merged with or rendered using baseline’s pamamagitan (intercession, Critical risk in Romans, tied to the saints’/Marian-intercession collision risk). Although both concepts involve the Spirit’s/Christ’s help and advocacy for believers (cf. Romans 8:26-27, 34, which does use intercession vocabulary for the Spirit and Christ), John’s Paraclete title is a distinct, personal name for the Spirit’s indwelling advocacy ministry poured out at Pentecost, not merely a rehearsal of the intercession vocabulary already fixed in Romans. Phase 2 material teaching both curricula together must clarify: Romans 8 describes what the Spirit and Christ do (intercede); John 14-16 names who the Spirit is in relation to believers (the Called-Alongside One). Both truths reinforce, but must not be lexically flattened into, one another.

3.8 General citation-format rule for Phase 2

All Scripture cross-references embedded in Phase 2 John curriculum materials must follow the same format already fixed in the baseline: Filipino Bible citation format Juan 3:16 (John) / Roma 5:8 (Romans) in reader-facing material, and the normalized John 3:16 / Romans 5:8 format in internal Phase 1/Phase 2 governance documents. New Filipino book-name mapping required for this curriculum: John = Juan (established Filipino Bible form, to be added to the citation conventions table in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md in a future revision).
