Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Pahayag (Revelation) 1–22 (English → Filipino)
Purpose and Method
This document extends, and never contradicts, the Romans baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json and is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Revelation) supplied for this curriculum: same 20 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. It provides (1) the full doctrine matrix required by PRD Step 4, cross-referenced to every supporting passage in Revelation, and (2) a chapter-by-chapter coverage log required by PRD Step 5’s full-book mandate, confirming that all 22 chapters have been reviewed — including chapters that contribute no new terms or doctrines, which are noted explicitly rather than silently omitted.
The core passage, Revelation 21:1–8, is the theological anchor of this curriculum (The New Heaven and New Earth, Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil, Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints, and derived Sonship all converge there), but coverage below spans the entire book.
Part 1 — Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Filipino Doctrine Name | Risk | Key Terms | Supporting Passages (Revelation) | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Return and Reign of Christ | Ang Pagbabalik at Paghahari ni Kristo | High | Panginoon, Mesiyas, “kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ,” “a thousand years,” “Come, Lord Jesus” | 11:15; 19:11–16; 20:1–6; 22:20 | Reuse baseline Panginoon/Mesiyas exactly at every thesis-level occurrence; the millennial timeline (ch. 20) is contested even among orthodox traditions, so render plainly without silently favoring one scheme; certainty of Christ’s unrivaled reign must never be diluted by devotional deference to other figures. | Human theologian |
| 2 | The Sovereignty of God over History | Ang Kapangyarihan ng Diyos sa Kasaysayan | Medium | trono, Makapangyarihan sa Lahat, Alpha at Omega, pitong tatak, kalaliman, 144,000 | 1:8; 4:1–11; 5:1–14; 9:1–11; 11:15; 21:5–6 | God’s personal, purposive rule over even the abyss/demonic forces must not be reduced to bahala na (fatalistic resignation, per baseline Providence caution) nor read through a dualistic cosmology where evil operates independently of God’s permission. | Native speaker review |
| 3 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | Pagtitiyaga at Tapat na Pagpapatotoo sa Ilalim ng Pag-uusig | High | mananagumpay, patotoo/saksi, pagdurusa, pagtitiis, dalawang saksi, dugo ng Kordero at salita ng patotoo | 2:2–3,10,19; 3:10; 6:9–11; 11:3–12; 12:11; 13:10; 14:12; 21:7 | Loanword martir carries Catholic canonized-martyr-veneration overlay parallel to the mga banal caution; faithful witness unto death must not be read as qualifying believers for intercessory-saint status; overcoming is Christ’s victory appropriated by faith, not self-achieved merit. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | Ang Paghuhukom sa Masasama at ang Pagpapawalang-sala sa mga Banal | Critical | ikalawang kamatayan, lawa ng apoy, dakilang trono na puti, poot ng Kordero, kaluluwa sa ilalim ng altar, aklat ng buhay | 6:9–11; 6:16–17; 14:19–20; 19:20; 20:6,10,11–15; 21:8 | CRITICAL: intersects folk-Catholic impiyerno/purgatoryo (a temporary cleansing state absent from Revelation’s theology) and Jehovah’s Witness annihilationism; every occurrence needs a note affirming final, conscious, everlasting judgment and vindication resting on the book of life (faith), not on sacramental performance or works-merit. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The New Heaven and New Earth | Ang Bagong Langit at Bagong Lupa | High | bago (kainos), walang dagat, tolda/mananahan, walang sumpa, ilog at punongkahoy ng buhay | 21:1–8; 21:22–27; 22:1–5 | ”Bago” alone loses kainos’s qualitative force; must be taught as genuine new-creation paired with bodily resurrection, not a cleaned-up present earth — relevant against Jehovah’s Witness earthly-paradise readings. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The Church as Bride of Christ | Ang Iglesia bilang Kasintahang Babae ni Kristo | High | kasintahang babae/nobya, banal na lungsod/Bagong Jerusalem, kasalan ng Kordero, “Ang Espiritu at ang Kasintahang Babae…Halika” | 19:7,9; 21:2,9–10; 22:17 | Risk of individualized-romantic flattening via Filipino wedding culture and of devotional displacement onto Marian imagery; must be taught as the whole redeemed iglesia, not an individual figure or elite reward-city. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Worship of the Lamb | Ang Pagsamba sa Kordero | Critical | sumamba, Kordero, karapat-dapat, dalawampu’t apat na matanda, apat na buhay na nilalang | 4:10–11; 5:6–14; 7:11; 19:10; 22:8–9 | CRITICAL: worship reserved exclusively for God/the Lamb even by a refusing angel; must never be applied, in the translated text, to any figure other than God/Christ, while teaching must not blanket-condemn Filipino Catholic devotional practice, which formally distinguishes latria from veneration. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | Simbolikong Pagpapaliwanag sa Panitikang Apokaliptiko | Medium | Pahayag, hayop, dragon, tatak ng hayop, Armagedon, dagat (simboliko) | 1:1,3; 12:3–9; 13:1–18; 16:16; 21:1 | Governs how every other doctrine is read; without this framework, readers risk literalistic newspaper-exegesis (mark-of-the-beast/national-ID discourse) or conflation with unrelated folklore (Bakunawa); interpretive restraint is the governing principle. | Native speaker review |
| 9 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | Katiyakan ng Pangwakas na Tagumpay ng Diyos laban sa Kasamaan | Medium | ”Naganap na,” walang sumpa, pupunasan ang bawat luha, Matapat at Totoo | 20:10; 21:4–6; 22:3 | The completed, perfect-tense finality of God’s victory (21:6) must be taught as certain, active divine triumph, not bahala na fatalistic resignation, nor a merely future, uncertain hope. | Native speaker review |
| 10 | Deity and Lordship of Christ | Pagka-Diyos at Pagka-Panginoon ni Kristo | Critical | Panginoon, Alpha at Omega, Anak ng Tao, Mikael, mga susi ng Kamatayan at Hades | 1:8,13,17–18; 12:7; 17:14; 19:16; 22:13 | CRITICAL: Jehovah’s Witness doctrine identifies Michael as Christ’s pre-incarnate identity; every occurrence involving Michael or shared divine self-designations (Alpha and Omega, Faithful and True) needs a note affirming Christ’s unique, worshiped deity as categorically distinct from any created angel. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Sonship of Christ and the Derived Sonship of Believers | Pagka-Anak ni Kristo at ang Ipinagkalooban na Pagka-Anak ng mga Mananampalataya | High | Anak ng Diyos (baseline, fixed), Anak ng Tao, “magiging anak ko” | 1:13; 21:7 | The overcomer’s derived, adoptive “anak” status (21:7) must not be conflated with Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal Sonship (fixed baseline Anak ng Diyos); a translator note is required at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Sainthood and Faithful Martyrdom | Pagka-Banal at Tapat na Pagpapatotoo Hanggang Kamatayan | Critical | mga banal, patotoo/saksi, panalangin ng mga banal, kaluluwa sa ilalim ng altar | 5:8; 6:9–11; 8:3–5; 11:18; 13:7,10; 14:12; 16:6; 17:6; 18:24; 19:8; 20:9 | CRITICAL, heightened beyond the baseline: persecuted, ordinary believers must not be absorbed into the Catholic canonized martyr-saint category (feast days, images, intercession) that martir independently evokes; applies to every persevering believer, not an elite class. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Angelology and Spiritual Warfare | Doktrina ng mga Anghel at ang Digmaang Espirituwal | High | dragon, Mikael, Satanas/Diyablo, kalaliman, hayop | 9:1–11; 12:1–17; 13:1–18; 20:1–3,7–10 | Dragon collides with the Visayan Bakunawa; Michael collides with both Catholic archangel veneration and Jehovah’s Witness Michael-is-Christ doctrine; Satan must be kept distinct from aswang, engkanto, diwata. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Inspiration and Canonicity of Scripture | Inspirasyon at Kabuuan ng Kasulatan | Medium | Pahayag, “huwag magdagdag…huwag mag-alis,” matapat at totoo ang mga salitang ito | 1:1–3; 21:5; 22:6–7,18–19 | Extends baseline Inspiration doctrine; the closing canonical-authority warning (22:18–19) is especially relevant given the Philippines’ majority-Catholic Scripture-vs.-tradition/magisterium context and any group claiming additional authoritative revelation. | Native speaker review |
| 15 | Assurance of Salvation and the Book of Life | Katiyakan ng Kaligtasan at ang Aklat ng Buhay | High | aklat ng buhay, dakilang trono na puti, “ayon sa kanilang mga gawa,” nilabhan sa dugo ng Kordero | 3:5; 7:14; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12–15; 21:27 | Final standing rests on belonging to Christ by faith (book of life), cleansed by his blood, not works performed to earn a favorable verdict; must be taught alongside the baseline Critical kaligtasan note against a merit-based misreading of “according to what they had done.” | Human theologian |
| 16 | Unity of the Whole People of God (144,000 and the Great Multitude) | Pagkakaisa ng Buong Bayan ng Diyos | Critical | 144,000, malaking pulutong, labindalawang pintuan/pundasyon | 7:1–17; 14:1–5; 21:12–14 | CRITICAL: 144,000 is the direct scriptural basis of Jehovah’s Witness two-tier doctrine (heavenly “anointed class” vs. earthly “great crowd”), a significant live risk given JW presence in the Philippines; mandatory note presenting the historic reading — one redeemed people, two complementary symbolic angles. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Divine Judgment on Idolatry and the Occult | Paghuhukom ng Diyos sa Idolatriya at Okultismo | Critical | mga sumasamba sa diyos-diyosan, imahen ng hayop, mga mangkukulam, Babilonyang dakila | 9:20–21; 13:14–15; 17:1–18; 18:23; 21:8; 22:15 | CRITICAL: “imahen” names both the beast’s condemned image and everyday Filipino Catholic devotional statues; “mangkukulam” names both a biblical exclusion category and a live folk-religious figure; every occurrence requires a respectful note distinguishing misdirected ultimate worship from devotional veneration, without licensing social accusation. | Human theologian |
| 18 | The Millennial Reign of Christ | Ang Isang Libong Taong Paghahari ni Kristo | High | isang libong taon, unang pagkabuhay na mag-uli, Satanas na nagapos | 20:1–6 | The single most contested interpretive question among otherwise orthodox traditions (premillennial/postmillennial/amillennial); render plainly and numerically without silently favoring one scheme; teach the certainty of Christ’s reign without requiring the curriculum to adjudicate the timeline debate. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Covenant Continuity between Old and New Testament | Pagpapatuloy ng Tipan mula sa Lumang Tipan hanggang sa Bagong Tipan | Medium | kaban ng tipan, labindalawang tribo, labindalawang apostol, kaharian at mga saserdote | 1:6; 5:10; 11:19; 20:6; 21:12–14 | Requires OT background teaching connecting the twelve tribes and twelve apostles as one continuous covenant people; comparatively low direct cultural-collision risk beyond general OT literacy needs. | Native speaker review |
| 20 | Grace and the Free Gift of Eternal Life | Biyaya at ang Walang Bayad na Kaloob ng Buhay na Walang Hanggan | High | biyaya, walang bayad/bilang kaloob (dorean), bukal ng tubig ng buhay | 1:4; 21:6; 22:17; 22:21 | Eternal life given dōrean (freely, as a gift) must be taught with the same force as baseline biyaya against utang na loob (a debt of gratitude requiring repayment) — the identical forbidden-substitution concern applies to every occurrence. | Human theologian |

| 19 | Marriage supper of the Lamb; rider on the white horse; Faithful and True; King of kings; angel refuses worship; beast defeated | 1, 4, 6, 7, 10, 15 | Convergence chapter: Return and Reign, Bride of Christ, Worship of the Lamb, and Deity/Lordship doctrines climax together. |
| 20 | Satan bound a thousand years; first resurrection; great white throne; book of life; lake of fire; second death | 4, 13, 15, 18 | Central passage for both the Millennial Reign doctrine and the Judgment/Vindication doctrine. |
| 21 | Core passage (21:1–8): new heaven and new earth; holy city/Bride; God dwells with his people; “It is done”; overcomer inherits and becomes God’s son; second death and the vice-list of the excluded | 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 19, 20 | Theological anchor of the curriculum; the highest concentration of Critical/High doctrines in the book converges here and must receive priority review depth in Phase 2. |
| 22 | River and tree of life; no more curse; throne of God and the Lamb; “Come, Lord Jesus”; Spirit and Bride say “Come”; canonical warning against addition/subtraction; closing grace benediction | 1, 5, 7, 9, 6 (22:17), 14, 20 | Closing chapter; reinforces new-creation, bride, worship, assurance, inspiration, and grace doctrines already logged, bringing the book’s doctrinal threads to their consummation. |
Every chapter (1–22) has been reviewed under this Phase 1 mandate. No chapter is silently omitted; chapters 3, 10, 15, and 18 are explicitly logged as reinforcing already-catalogued doctrines without introducing new doctrine categories.
This document must be loaded alongside assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, assets/translation_memory.json, and assets/bible_term_registry.json before any Phase 2 segment translation of Revelation content. It is fully consistent with, and does not alter, the risk tiers or doctrine set fixed in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Deity and Lordship of Christ
Filipino name: Pagka-Diyos at Pagka-Panginoon ni Kristo
Key terms: Lord, Alpha and Omega (applied to Christ), Son of Man, Michael, keys of Death and Hades
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Jehovah’s Witness doctrine, held by a significant Filipino religious minority, specifically teaches that Michael the archangel is the pre-incarnate/heavenly identity of Jesus Christ. Every occurrence involving Michael, or divine self-designations shared between God and Christ (Alpha and Omega, Faithful and True), needs a note affirming Christ’s unique, worshiped deity as categorically distinct from any created angel, who by contrast explicitly refuses worship (19:10; 22:8-9).
Divine Judgment on Idolatry and the Occult
Filipino name: Paghuhukom ng Diyos sa Idolatriya at Okultismo
Key terms: idolaters, image of the beast, sorcerers, Babylon the great
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘imahen’ names both the beast’s condemned idolatrous image and the everyday Filipino Catholic devotional statues of Christ, Mary, and the saints; ‘mangkukulam’ names both the biblical exclusion category and a live Filipino folk-religious figure. Every occurrence requires a carefully worded, respectful teaching note distinguishing misdirected ultimate worship (biblical idolatry) from devotional veneration as Catholic theology itself defines it, and affirming a real biblical exclusion category for occult practice without licensing social accusation.
Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints
Filipino name: Ang Paghuhukom sa Masasama at ang Pagpapawalang-sala sa mga Banal
Key terms: second death, lake of fire, great white throne, wrath of the Lamb, souls under the altar, book of life
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: intersects (a) Filipino Catholic folk belief in impiyerno and purgatoryo, a temporary cleansing state absent from Revelation’s own theology, and (b) Jehovah’s Witness annihilationism, which denies eternal conscious punishment. Every occurrence needs a teaching note affirming final, conscious, everlasting judgment for the unrepentant and vindication for the saints resting on the book of life (faith-belonging to Christ), not on sacramental performance or works-merit at the verdict itself.
Sainthood and Faithful Martyrdom
Filipino name: Pagka-Banal at Tapat na Pagpapatotoo Hanggang Kamatayan
Key terms: saints, testimony/witness, prayers of the saints, souls under the altar
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, extending the baseline’s mga banal caution with heightened force: Revelation’s persecuted, ordinary, faithful believers who suffer and die for their testimony must not be absorbed into the Filipino Catholic category of canonized martyr-saints (with feast days, images, and intercessory roles) that the loanword ‘martir’ independently evokes; every occurrence needs a note that this designation applies to every believer who perseveres, not an elite canonized class.
Unity of the Whole People of God (144,000 and the Great Multitude)
Filipino name: Pagkakaisa ng Buong Bayan ng Diyos
Key terms: 144,000, great multitude, twelve gates/twelve foundations
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 144,000 is the direct scriptural basis of Jehovah’s Witness two-tier doctrine (a limited heavenly ‘anointed class’ versus an earthly-paradise ‘great crowd’), a live, specifically Philippine religious-landscape risk given the significant Jehovah’s Witness presence in the country. Every occurrence requires a mandatory note presenting the historic reading: one redeemed people from every nation, pictured from two complementary symbolic angles, not two separate classes with different eternal destinies.
Worship of the Lamb
Filipino name: Ang Pagsamba sa Kordero
Key terms: worship (proskyneo), Lamb, worthy, twenty-four elders, four living creatures
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: worship (sumamba) is reserved exclusively for God and the Lamb even by an explicitly refusing angel (19:10; 22:8-9), directly tensioning with any devotional practice perceived as extending worship-level reverence to Mary, the saints, or images. The term must never be applied, in translation, to any figure other than God/Christ within the text, while teaching must not blanket-condemn Filipino Catholic devotional practice, which formally distinguishes latria (worship) from veneration.
High Risk Doctrines
Angelology and Spiritual Warfare
Filipino name: Doktrina ng mga Anghel at ang Digmaang Espirituwal
Key terms: dragon, Michael, Satan/Devil, abyss, beast
Review routing: Human theologian
The dragon collides directly with the Visayan folk-mythological Bakunawa; Michael collides with both Catholic archangel veneration and Jehovah’s Witness Michael-is-Christ doctrine; Satan must be kept distinct from unrelated folk-supernatural figures (aswang, engkanto, diwata). Each occurrence needs a note anchoring the figure to its specific biblical identity rather than an adjacent folk-religious or new-religious-movement category.
Assurance of Salvation and the Book of Life
Filipino name: Katiyakan ng Kaligtasan at ang Aklat ng Buhay
Key terms: book of life, great white throne, according to what they had done, washed in the blood of the Lamb
Review routing: Human theologian
Final standing before God is shown to rest on whether one’s name is found in the book of life — belonging to Christ by faith, cleansed by his blood — not on works performed to earn a favorable verdict; every occurrence must be taught alongside the baseline’s Critical kaligtasan note to prevent a merit-based or sacramental-performance misreading.
The Church as Bride of Christ
Filipino name: Ang Iglesia bilang Kasintahang Babae ni Kristo
Key terms: bride, holy city/New Jerusalem, marriage supper of the Lamb, Spirit and the Bride say, Come
Review routing: Human theologian
Risk of individualized-romantic flattening of the corporate bridal image through Filipino wedding-culture sentimentality, and of devotional displacement onto Marian imagery (Mary is sometimes styled in exalted terms in folk devotion); must be taught as the whole redeemed iglesia (reusing baseline term exactly), not an individual figure or a separate reward-city for a spiritual elite.
Grace and the Free Gift of Eternal Life
Filipino name: Biyaya at ang Walang Bayad na Kaloob ng Buhay na Walang Hanggan
Key terms: grace, freely/as a gift (dorean), spring of the water of life
Review routing: Human theologian
The same theological register as the baseline’s Critical-adjacent grace doctrine: eternal life given dōrean (freely, as a gift) must be taught with the same force as biyaya against utang na loob (a debt of gratitude requiring repayment) — the identical forbidden-substitution concern the baseline flags for grace applies directly to every occurrence of this free-gift language.
The Millennial Reign of Christ
Filipino name: Ang Isang Libong Taong Paghahari ni Kristo
Key terms: a thousand years, first resurrection, Satan bound
Review routing: Human theologian
The single most contested interpretive question among otherwise orthodox, Bible-believing traditions (premillennial, postmillennial, amillennial); the term itself should be rendered plainly and numerically without the translation silently favoring one scheme, while the certainty of Christ’s reign and evil’s defeat is taught without requiring the curriculum to adjudicate the timeline debate.
The New Heaven and New Earth
Filipino name: Ang Bagong Langit at Bagong Lupa
Key terms: new (kainos), no more sea, tabernacle/dwell, no more curse, river and tree of life
Review routing: Human theologian
‘Bago’ alone loses kainos’s qualitative force (new-in-kind, not new-in-time); must be taught as a genuine new creation-act paired with bodily resurrection, not a merely cleaned-up version of the present earth — directly relevant against readings echoed in some Jehovah’s Witness teaching of an unending earthly paradise apart from the full consummated new creation.
Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution
Filipino name: Pagtitiyaga at Tapat na Pagpapatotoo sa Ilalim ng Pag-uusig
Key terms: overcomer, testimony/witness, tribulation, patient endurance, two witnesses, blood of the Lamb and word of testimony
Review routing: Human theologian
The loanword ‘martir’ already carries Catholic canonized-martyr-veneration overlay parallel to the baseline’s Critical mga banal caution; ordinary faithful witness unto death must not be read as qualifying believers for an intercessory-saint status, and overcoming must not be read as self-achieved merit rather than Christ’s own victory appropriated by faith.
The Return and Reign of Christ
Filipino name: Ang Pagbabalik at Paghahari ni Kristo
Key terms: King of kings and Lord of lords, kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, thousand years, Come, Lord Jesus
Review routing: Human theologian
Must reuse baseline Panginoon and Mesiyas exactly at every thesis-level occurrence (11:15, 19:16, 22:20); the millennial-reign timeline (ch. 20) is contested even among orthodox traditions, so translation must render terms plainly without silently favoring one interpretive scheme, while the certainty of Christ’s unrivaled, returning reign itself must never be diluted by devotional deference paid to other figures.
Sonship of Christ and the Derived Sonship of Believers
Filipino name: Pagka-Anak ni Kristo at ang Ipinagkalooban na Pagka-Anak ng mga Mananampalataya
Key terms: Son of God, Son of Man, the one who overcomes will inherit…and will be my son
Review routing: Human theologian
The overcomer’s ‘anak’ (son) status in 21:7 is derived, adoptive sonship granted through inheritance, not equality with Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal Sonship fixed in the baseline as Anak ng Diyos; a translator note preventing conflation of these two distinct concepts is required in every occurrence.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil
Filipino name: Katiyakan ng Pangwakas na Tagumpay ng Diyos laban sa Kasamaan
Key terms: It is done, no more curse, wipe away every tear, Faithful and True
Review routing: Native speaker review
The completed, settled finality of God’s victory (perfect-tense ‘Gegonen,’ 21:6) must be taught as certain, active divine triumph, not passive fatalistic resignation (bahala na, the same risk already flagged for Providence in the baseline) nor a merely future, uncertain hope.
Covenant Continuity between Old and New Testament
Filipino name: Pagpapatuloy ng Tipan mula sa Lumang Tipan hanggang sa Bagong Tipan
Key terms: ark of the covenant, twelve tribes, twelve apostles, kingdom and priests
Review routing: Native speaker review
Requires OT background teaching connecting the twelve tribes and twelve apostles as one continuous covenant people; comparatively low direct cultural-collision risk in the Filipino context beyond the general need for OT literacy.
Inspiration and Canonicity of Scripture
Filipino name: Inspirasyon at Kabuuan ng Kasulatan
Key terms: Revelation/Pahayag, do not add to or take away, these words are faithful and true
Review routing: Native speaker review
Extends the baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine: the closing canonical-authority warning (22:18-19) is especially relevant given the Philippines’ majority-Catholic theological context (Scripture vs. tradition/magisterial teaching) and any teaching tradition claiming additional authoritative revelation beyond the biblical canon.
The Sovereignty of God over History
Filipino name: Ang Kapangyarihan ng Diyos sa Kasaysayan
Key terms: throne, Almighty, Alpha and Omega, seven seals, abyss, 144,000
Review routing: Native speaker review
God’s personal, purposive rule over even the abyss and the demonic forces (he alone holds ‘the key,’ 9:1; 20:1) must not be reduced to bahala na (fatalistic resignation, already flagged in the baseline for Providence) nor read through a dualistic cosmology where evil operates independently of God’s permission.
Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation
Filipino name: Simbolikong Pagpapaliwanag sa Panitikang Apokaliptiko
Key terms: Revelation/Pahayag, beast, dragon, mark of the beast, Armageddon, sea (symbolic)
Review routing: Native speaker review
Governs how every other doctrine in the book should be read; without this framework, readers risk either overly literalistic newspaper-exegesis (e.g., linking national ID/SIM-registration systems to ‘the mark of the beast,’ a documented live Filipino public-discourse phenomenon) or conflating apocalyptic imagery with unrelated Filipino folklore figures (Bakunawa for the dragon). Teaching note required establishing interpretive restraint as the governing principle.
