Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis: 2 John — Full Book Coverage

Purpose

This document is the PRD Phase 1 Step 4 doctrine matrix for the full text of 2 John (1:1–13). It is generated in strict consistency with analysis/doctrine_risk_registry.json (2 John) supplied for this pipeline run: same fourteen doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. This file adds full-book section-by-section traceability so that no verse of 2 John is silently skipped, and grounds each Critical/High assignment in a specific reason, per the PRD mandate.

2 John is a single short chapter (13 verses). Per the PRD’s full-coverage mandate, this analysis walks the entire letter section by section (there being no chapter divisions to traverse), so that every verse is explicitly accounted for — including verses that introduce no new doctrine or term, which are marked “reviewed — no new doctrinal content” rather than omitted.

The core passage, 2 John 1:4–11, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (Walking in Truth and Love; Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ) and receives the deepest treatment below, but the full letter (vv.1–3, 12–13) is analyzed as well.

1. Full Doctrine Matrix (Whole-Book, Consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json)

#DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation Risk (grounded reason)Review Routing
1Deity and Sonship of Christ1:3, 1:9Critical”The Son” is named alongside “the Father” as co-source of grace/mercy/peace (v.3) and as one “had” jointly with the Father (v.9) — implicit co-equal deity claim. Must reuse baseline Putrané Gusti Allah pattern; any softening toward a titled or honorary sonship, or any wahyu-style transferable-mandate framing, destroys the doctrine.Human theologian
2Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation1:7CriticalDirect NT ground for the baseline’s Critical Incarnation doctrine, used polemically. The forbidden substitution manunggaling kawula gusti would invert the verse’s sense (the deceivers deny exactly the once-for-all historical incarnation this teaching affirms). κόσμος must render donya, never jagad, to avoid the kejawen jagad ageng/jagad alit cosmology.Human theologian
3The Antichrist Category1:7Criticalantikristus must be transliterated, never diluted to generic “musuh” (enemy) nor drawn toward Satrio Piningit (the Jayabaya hidden-knight figure, already forbidden for “messiah” in the Romans baseline). This is a distinct NT theological category, not a rival folk-prophetic figure.Human theologian
4Walking in Truth and Love1:1, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6HighControlling metaphor “walking” (lumampah) shares its root with kejawen laku (ascetic mystical exercise, e.g. laku prihatin, undertaken to accumulate spiritual power). Must be explicitly taught as grace-enabled ordinary conduct, not self-directed discipline earning spiritual standing.Human theologian
5Doctrinal Confession of Christ’s Incarnate Identity1:7Highngakeni (confess) risks assimilation to the Islamic syahadat (a fixed ritual creedal recitation) in a Muslim-majority setting; must be taught as propositional affirmation of specific truth-content, not ritual performance.Human theologian
6Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ1:9HighOpposes the live Javanese guru-murid pattern of progressively unfolded esoteric teaching (paralleling the Romans baseline’s caution on mystical-lineage transmission). nglancangi (“goes ahead”) names exactly this claim to advance beyond a fixed apostolic deposit. The binary “has God/does not have God” must not be softened toward gradations resembling kasampurnan.Human theologian
7Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment1:10HighHospitality toward guests (tamu) is one of the deepest Javanese social values (a guest as bearer of rejeki); refusing lodging and withholding a customary greeting (pambagya/salam) are severe unggah-ungguh breaches readable as open insult. Teaching must repeatedly state the narrow scope: itinerant teachers actively denying the incarnation, never a general principle toward strangers, other faiths, or ordinary guests.Human theologian
8Complicity in False Teaching1:11HighShares the κοινωνία root with “fellowship” but in a starkly negative, complicity sense. Reusing the baseline’s positive patunggilan here would wrongly imply ordinary Christian fellowship is itself dangerous; a distinct phrase (dados rowang ing pendamelan awon) is structurally required.Human theologian
9The “Elect” Address (Elect Lady and Elect Sister)1:1, 1:13High”Elect lady” honorific must never be built from any Gusti-based term (Gusti is reserved exclusively for divine Lordship, even though κυρία is etymologically related to κύριος). The adjectival “elect/chosen” describing the addressee must not be conflated with the baseline’s soteriological election doctrine (pepilihanipun Gusti Allah). Genuine ancient interpretive ambiguity (individual woman vs. personified congregation) must be flagged for teacher notes.Human theologian
10The Ancient Commandment of Love1:5, 1:6Mediumpepaken must avoid the feudal court-decree overtone of dhawuh (which would recast a relational family command as a keraton-style edict) and must stay distinct from angger-anggering Toret (Mosaic Law, per Romans baseline); this is the relational love-command received from the Father, continuous “from the beginning.”Native speaker review
11Assurance of Reward for Perseverance1:8Medium”Full reward” (ganjaran ingkang jangkep) must be taught as reward for faithful continuance in already-secured salvation, not a wage earning standing before God; must avoid drift toward utang budi (reciprocal social debt), already forbidden for grace in the Romans baseline.Native speaker review
12Grace, Mercy, and Peace Greeting1:3MediumThe threefold greeting (sih-rahmat, kawelasan, katentreman) must remain individually distinct; collapsing any two terms blurs the triad’s structure and risks losing grace’s specific unmerited-favor sense.Native speaker review
13Apostolic Authority and Church Order1:1, 1:5, 1:12Mediumpinituwa must carry apostolic-era pastoral teaching authority, not the generic social seniority of a village sesepuh; the author’s gentle, request-toned appeal (“I ask,” nyuwun) must not be read as diminishing underlying apostolic authority.Native speaker review
14Christian Fellowship and Joy1:1, 1:4, 1:12, 1:13LowStandard relational/epistolary vocabulary (para putra, sedhèrèk èstri, kabungahan) carries minor risk of blending into generic slametan-style ritual gladness or ordinary social kinship warmth rather than gospel-centered fellowship.Automated review

Risk summary (must equal doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical 3 · High 6 · Medium 4 · Low 1 · Total 14 doctrines — 9 requiring theologian review, 4 requiring native speaker review, 1 automated-only.

2. Full-Book, Verse-by-Verse Coverage (2 John 1:1–13)

2 John has no internal chapter divisions; the sections below walk the entire letter front to back so that every verse’s doctrinal content (or explicit absence thereof) is recorded, per the PRD full-coverage mandate.

Section A — vv.1–3 (Prescript and Greeting)

Text scope: “The elder to the elect lady and her children… Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son…”

  • Doctrines active: Apostolic Authority and Church Order (#13); The “Elect” Address (#9); Grace, Mercy, and Peace Greeting (#12); Deity and Sonship of Christ (#1, via “the Father’s Son”); Christian Fellowship and Joy (#14, background).
  • Key terms: pinituwa, ingkang kapilih, Ibu ingkang kinurmatan, sih-rahmat, kawelasan, katentreman, Putrané Gusti Allah.
  • Risk concentration: This is the single densest section for High/Critical terms outside the core passage — three of the four High/Critical-adjacent address-and-greeting doctrines converge here. The “elect lady” honorific (#9) and the Father-Son deity pairing (#1) both require theologian sign-off before this section clears review.

Section B — v.4 (Rejoicing over Children Walking in Truth)

Text scope: “I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us.”

  • Doctrines active: Walking in Truth and Love (#4) — first occurrence of the letter’s controlling metaphor; Christian Fellowship and Joy (#14, “rejoiced greatly”).
  • Key terms: lumampah, kayektosan, kabungahan.
  • Risk note: This verse opens the core passage (1:4–11) and establishes lumampah as the anchor verb for the whole doctrine; every subsequent occurrence in vv.6, 9 must render identically for cross-verse consistency.

Section C — vv.5–6 (The Commandment to Love One Another)

Text scope: “I am writing to ask… that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments… you should walk in it.”

  • Doctrines active: The Ancient Commandment of Love (#10); Walking in Truth and Love (#4, reinforced); Apostolic Authority and Church Order (#13, “I am writing to ask,” gentle-request register).
  • Key terms: pepaken, enggal, saking wiwitan, katresnan, lumampah.
  • Risk note: Core-passage verses. The command/decree register distinction (pepaken vs. dhawuh) is the load-bearing translation choice here.

Section D — v.7 (Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation)

Text scope: “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.”

  • Doctrines active: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation (#2, Critical); The Antichrist Category (#3, Critical); Doctrinal Confession of Christ’s Incarnate Identity (#5, High).
  • Key terms: tiyang panasar, donya, ngakeni, rawuh dados manungsa, antikristus.
  • Risk note: The single highest-density verse in the letter — three doctrines, two of them Critical, converge in one sentence. This is the theological center of the core passage and requires mandatory theologian review with no exceptions.

Section E — v.8 (Watch Yourselves; Full Reward)

Text scope: “Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.”

  • Doctrines active: Assurance of Reward for Perseverance (#11); Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ (#6, background — vigilance precedes the abiding statement in v.9).
  • Key terms: diwaspadakaken, kelangan, ganjaran ingkang jangkep.
  • Risk note: Guards against a merit/wage reading of reward that would contradict the baseline’s Critical grace doctrine; native speaker review is sufficient provided the grace-distinction note is retained in teaching material.

Section F — v.9 (Abiding in the Teaching of Christ)

Text scope: “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”

  • Doctrines active: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ (#6, High — its defining verse); Deity and Sonship of Christ (#1, Critical — “has… the Son”); Christian Fellowship and Joy background n/a here.
  • Key terms: nglancangi, tetep manggen/lestantun, piwulangipun Gusti Yesus Kristus, “gadhah/mboten gadhah gesang sesambetan kaliyan Gusti Allah,” Putrané Gusti Allah.
  • Risk note: Core-passage climax verse; the binary has/does-not-have-God structure must render as an unambiguous either/or, not a spectrum, and the Father-Son pairing again invokes the Critical deity/sonship doctrine already flagged in Section A.

Section G — vv.10–11 (Hospitality Withheld from False Teachers)

Text scope: “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”

  • Doctrines active: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment (#7, High); Complicity in False Teaching (#8, High).
  • Key terms: nampani wonten ing griya, pambagya/salam, dados rowang ing pendamelan awon, pendamelan awon.
  • Risk note: Closes the core passage. The strongest cultural-collision risk in the entire letter (Javanese hospitality norms); requires the narrow-scope teaching caveat on every occurrence, per the registry note, and must never generalize beyond itinerant incarnation-denying teachers.

Section H — vv.12–13 (Closing: Hope of a Visit; Greetings from the Sister Church)

Text scope: “Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink… The children of your elect sister greet you.”

  • Doctrines active: Christian Fellowship and Joy (#14, Low); Apostolic Authority and Church Order (#13, background — the author’s personal, relational closing); The “Elect” Address (#9, second occurrence, “elect sister”).
  • Key terms: kertas lan mangsi, pethuk piyambak/adhep-adhepan, kabungahan ingkang jangkep, sedhèrèk èstri, ingkang kapilih.
  • Risk note: Primarily Low-risk practical/relational vocabulary. Reviewed — no new doctrinal content beyond the second “elect” address already governed by Section A’s High-risk entry (#9); no additional term coinage required. This closing section is explicitly noted rather than omitted, per the full-coverage mandate.

All 13 verses of 2 John are accounted for. No verse or section was silently skipped.

4. Cross-Reference to the Romans Baseline

2 John does not introduce any doctrine that contradicts the Romans baseline; it applies and sharpens several baseline Critical doctrines in a polemical, pastoral letter:

  • Incarnation (baseline Critical) → sharpened in v.7 as the specific test for distinguishing true teachers from deceivers.
  • Deity/Sonship of Christ (baseline Critical, Putrané Gusti Allah) → reused verbatim in vv.3 and 9, both times in a co-equal pairing with “the Father.”
  • Grace (baseline Critical, sih-rahmat) → reused verbatim in the v.3 greeting triad, positioned alongside two new terms (kawelasan, katentreman) that must not blur into it.
  • Messiah/antichrist naming convention (baseline Critical, Sang Mesias transliteration precedent) → informs the new antikristus transliteration in v.7, keeping both terms outside the Jayabaya folk-prophetic tradition.
  • Holy/sanctification cautions against self-directed ascetic discipline (baseline High, tapa/tirakat) → directly parallels the new lumampah/kejawen laku collision risk in vv.4–6, 9.

No baseline term is redefined, weakened, or overridden by this analysis. All fourteen 2 John doctrines, their risk tiers, and their review routing exactly match doctrine_risk_registry.json for this curriculum.

This document satisfies PRD Phase 1 Step 4 for the 2 John curriculum. It must be loaded alongside analysis/08_core_glossary.md and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json before any Phase 2 translation work begins.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation

Javanese name: Pepenget Tumrap Panasar Ingkang Nolak Rawuhipun Gusti Yesus Kristus Dados Manungsa
Key terms: deceiver, confess, coming in the flesh, world
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: This verse is the direct New Testament ground for the Romans baseline’s Critical Incarnation doctrine, applied polemically. The forbidden substitution manunggaling kawula gusti (the kejawen teaching of a repeatable mystical fusion of the human self and the Divine) would invert this verse’s meaning entirely, since the deceivers denounced here deny precisely a real, historical, once-for-all incarnation. World (κόσμος) must be rendered donya, not jagad, to avoid pulling the verse into the kejawen jagad ageng/jagad alit cosmological framework.

The Antichrist Category

Javanese name: Rohipun Antikristus
Key terms: antichrist, deceiver
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Antikristus must be transliterated, never diluted to a generic ‘musuh’ (enemy) nor framed as adjacent to Satrio Piningit, the Jayabaya-prophecy hidden knight already forbidden Critical for ‘messiah’ in the Romans baseline. Antichrist is a specific NT theological category naming the spirit of denying Christ’s incarnate identity, not a rival prophesied figure within the separate Javanese folk-prophetic (Jayabaya) tradition.

Deity and Sonship of Christ

Javanese name: Kaallahan Saha Kaputranipun Gusti Yesus Kristus
Key terms: Son of the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Reuses the Romans baseline’s Putrané Gusti Allah phrase pattern. Christ is named alongside the Father as co-source of grace, mercy, and peace (v.3) and as one ‘had’ together with the Father by genuine believers (v.9) — both statements carry strong implicit deity-of-Christ force that must not be softened into a titled or honorary sonship, nor collapsed by any wahyu-style transferable-mandate framing.

High Risk Doctrines

Walking in Truth and Love

Javanese name: Lumampah ing Kayektosan saha Katresnan
Key terms: walk, truth, love, commandment
Review routing: Human theologian

The epistle’s controlling metaphor of ‘walking’ as sustained conduct risks collision with the kejawen term laku (an ascetic mystical spiritual exercise, e.g. laku prihatin, undertaken to accumulate spiritual power or attain enlightenment), since the chosen rendering lumampah shares that root. Teaching material must state explicitly that walking in truth is grace-enabled, ordinary conduct flowing from what is already given in Christ, not a self-directed discipline earning spiritual standing — the same class of collision the Romans baseline already flags for tapa/tirakat under ‘holy.‘

Doctrinal Confession of Christ’s Incarnate Identity

Javanese name: Pangakenipun Gusti Yesus Kristus Ingkang Rawuh Dados Manungsa
Key terms: confess, acknowledge, does not confess
Review routing: Human theologian

Confessing (ngakeni) must remain a propositional, content-specific affirmation that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. In a Muslim-majority society there is risk that ‘confessing’ will be assimilated to the Islamic syahadat, a fixed ritual creedal recitation; teaching material must keep the emphasis on affirming specific truth-content rather than performing a verbal ritual formula.

Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ

Javanese name: Kalestantunan Wonten Ing Piwulangipun Gusti Yesus Kristus
Key terms: abide, teaching of Christ, goes ahead, has God
Review routing: Human theologian

Javanese religious culture includes a live guru-murid pattern in which a spiritual teacher’s private teaching is progressively unfolded to disciples over time, paralleling the Romans baseline’s caution under ‘Inspiration of Scripture’ about esoteric mystical-lineage transmission. 2 John 9 directly opposes this pattern: the teaching of Christ (piwulangipun Gusti Yesus Kristus) is a fixed, complete, publicly received apostolic deposit, and ‘goes ahead’ (nglancangi) names exactly the guru-style claim to advance beyond it. The binary ‘has God / does not have God’ must not be softened into gradations of spiritual attainment resembling kasampurnan.

Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment

Javanese name: Kawicaksanan Nampi Tamu Saha Mbedakaken Piwulang
Key terms: receive into the house, greeting, do not receive, do not greet
Review routing: Human theologian

Hospitality toward guests (tamu) is one of the deepest values in Javanese social ethics; a guest is proverbially treated as a bearer of blessing (rejeki), and both refusing lodging and withholding a customary greeting (pambagya/salam) are serious breaches of unggah-ungguh (social propriety) readable as open insult in an honor-shame framework. Teaching material must state explicitly and repeatedly that this instruction is narrowly scoped to itinerant teachers actively denying Christ’s incarnation, never a general principle for treating strangers, other faiths, or ordinary guests.

Complicity in False Teaching

Javanese name: Tumut Kalebet Ing Pendamelan Awonipun Piwulang Palsu
Key terms: takes part in, shares in, wicked works
Review routing: Human theologian

This verse uses the same root as κοινωνία (‘fellowship’) but in a starkly negative, complicity sense. The Romans-baseline positive term patunggilan (fellowship, Low risk) must NOT be reused here; doing so would risk teaching, by implication, that ordinary Christian fellowship itself is dangerous or that positive fellowship and this warning are the same concept. A distinct phrase (dados rowang ing pendamelan awon) is required.

The ‘Elect’ Address (Elect Lady and Elect Sister)

Javanese name: Sebutanipun ‘Ingkang Kapilih’ Kangge Ibu Saha Sedherek
Key terms: elect lady, elect, chosen, sister
Review routing: Human theologian

The honorific address ‘elect lady’ (Ibu ingkang kinurmatan) must never be built from any Gusti-based term, since Gusti is reserved exclusively for the divine title ‘Lord’ in the baseline, even though κυρία is etymologically related to κύριος. Separately, the adjectival ‘elect/chosen’ (ingkang kapilih) describing the addressee and her sister must not be conflated with the Romans baseline’s pepilihanipun Gusti Allah (the sovereign soteriological doctrine of election, High risk); this is a descriptive honorific, not a deployment of election doctrine. Teacher notes must also flag the genuine ancient interpretive ambiguity (individual woman vs. personified congregation).

Medium Risk Doctrines

The Ancient Commandment of Love

Javanese name: Pepaken Katresnan Ingkang Sampun Wonten Saking Wiwitan
Key terms: commandment, new commandment, from the beginning, love one another
Review routing: Native speaker review

Pepaken must not carry the feudal court-decree connotation of dhawuh, which would recast a relational family command as a keraton-style royal edict; it must also stay distinct from angger-anggering Toret (the Mosaic Law, per the Romans baseline), since this is the relational love-command received from the Father, continuous ‘from the beginning’ of apostolic teaching, not new legislation.

Assurance of Reward for Perseverance

Javanese name: Kayakinan Ganjaran Kangge Kalestantunan
Key terms: watch yourselves, lose, full reward
Review routing: Native speaker review

The ‘full reward’ (ganjaran ingkang jangkep) for perseverance must be taught as reward for faithful continuance in already-secured salvation, not a wage that earns standing before God; teaching material must avoid any drift toward utang budi (the reciprocal social debt of gratitude Javanese ethics obligates a person to repay), already forbidden for grace in the Romans baseline.

Grace, Mercy, and Peace Greeting

Javanese name: Salam Sih-Rahmat, Kawelasan, Saha Katentreman
Key terms: grace, mercy, peace
Review routing: Native speaker review

The three blessings must remain individually distinct in Javanese: sih-rahmat (grace, Critical, reused from baseline — never kasekten/wahyu/utang budi), kawelasan (mercy, new term), and katentreman (peace, reused from baseline). Collapsing any two into one term would blur the greeting’s threefold structure and risk losing grace’s specific unmerited-favor sense within the triad.

Apostolic Authority and Church Order

Javanese name: Wewenang Pinituwa Ing Pasamuwan
Key terms: the elder, I ask, I write
Review routing: Native speaker review

Pinituwa must carry apostolic-era pastoral teaching authority, not the generic social seniority of a village sesepuh; the author’s gentle, request-toned appeal (‘I ask,’ nyuwun, rather than a command) must not be read as diminishing this underlying apostolic authority.

Low Risk Doctrines

Christian Fellowship and Joy

Javanese name: Patunggilan Saha Kabungahan Kristiani
Key terms: rejoiced, children, sister, face to face, full joy
Review routing: Automated review

Standard relational and epistolary vocabulary (para putra, sedhèrèk èstri, kabungahan) with minor risk of blending into generic slametan-style ritual gladness or ordinary social kinship terms; the referent should remain clearly gospel-centered fellowship and gladness rather than generic Javanese communal warmth.
