Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: 2 Peter (Full Book) — English → Javanese

Methodology

This analysis follows PRD Phase 1 Step 1: every chapter of 2 Peter (1–3) is analyzed in the original Koine Greek, first to last, with the core passage (1:16-21) given verse-by-verse treatment. Every load-bearing theological term is documented with: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 2 Peter, and destination-language (Javanese) rendering risk.

Reuse rule: Where a term already has an established rendering in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, that exact rendering is reused here and marked [BASELINE REUSE]. No baseline rendering is altered. New terms specific to 2 Peter’s vocabulary are proposed and risk-tiered using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.

2 Peter is short (3 chapters, 61 verses) but doctrinally dense, and it introduces several terms with acute Javanese syncretism risk not previously encountered in Romans — most notably divine nature (theias physeōs, 1:4), the Second Coming/parousia (risk of collision with the Javanese Ratu Adil messianic-restoration folk expectation), morning star (risk of accidental “Lucifer” association), and prophetic inspiration by the Holy Spirit (risk of collision with Javanese spirit-possession/trance practice, kesurupan). These are flagged Critical below.

CORE PASSAGE: 2 Peter 1:16-21 (Verse-by-Verse)

2 Peter 1:16

“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables (μύθοις), when we made known unto you the power (δύναμιν) and coming (παρουσίαν) of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses (ἐπόπται) of his majesty (μεγαλειότητος).”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
myths/fablesμύθοις (dat. pl. of μῦθος)mythoisinvented story, legendfictional tale, especially religious/cosmogonic legend; opposed to historical fact”fables,” “myths,” “cleverly devised stories”Peter refutes the charge that apostolic preaching is invented legend; contrasts myth with eyewitness history”dongeng-dongeng ingkang digawe-gawe” (fabricated/made-up tales). Risk: Medium. Java has a rich oral-legend tradition (dongeng, crita rakyat, babad); must be clear Peter is defending the historicity of the gospel events, not disparaging Javanese storytelling generally.
cleverly devisedσεσοφισμένοις (perf. pass. ptc. of σοφίζω)sesophismenoismade wise/clever, crafted with skillskillfully contrived, artfully invented”cunningly devised,” “cleverly concocted”Modifies “myths” — these are not naive tales but deliberately fabricated ones; apostolic testimony is the opposite”ingkang digawe-gawe kanthi lantip” (skillfully fabricated). Risk: Low, qualifier only.
powerδύναμιν (acc. sing. of δύναμις)dynaminmight, capability, power to actinherent power, miracle-working power, power of God/Christ”power,” “might,” “ability”Christ’s own power displayed in the Transfiguration and to be displayed at his return”panguwaosipun Gusti Yesus” [pattern reuse of BASELINE term δύναμις θεοῦ → “panguwaosipun Gusti Allah”]. Risk: Critical. Must never use kasekten (Javanese magical/ascetic-earned potency) — same forbidden substitution as the baseline Power of God entry, now applied to Christ’s own power.
coming/arrivalπαρουσίαν (acc. sing. of παρουσία)parousianpresence, arrival(1) a ruler’s official state visit/arrival; (2) technical NT term for Christ’s future return”coming,” “presence,” “advent,” “return”Here refers proleptically to Christ’s Second Coming, previewed in the Transfiguration’s glory”rawuhipun Gusti Yesus Kristus ingkang kaping kalih” (the second coming/arrival of Jesus Christ). Risk: Critical. NEVER associate with Ratu Adil, the Javanese folk-messianic “Just King” expected (per Jayabaya-tradition prophecy) to arise and restore justice — the same class of risk documented for Satrio Piningit in the baseline Messiah entry. Christ’s return is a unique, certain, already-promised event tied exclusively to the historical Jesus, not a still-awaited archetypal restorer figure any nation might produce.
eyewitnessesἐπόπται (nom. pl. of ἐπόπτης)epoptaione who has personally seen/observedfirsthand witness; (background use in Greek mystery religions for an initiate who attained the highest grade of “seeing”)“eyewitnesses,” “those who saw for themselves”Peter grounds apostolic authority in personal, historical, sensory experience of the Transfiguration”seksi ingkang sampun ndeleng piyambak” (witnesses who personally saw). Risk: Medium. Must retain the weight of first-hand legal/testimonial witness, not merely “someone who heard about it.”
majestyμεγαλειότητος (gen. sing. of μεγαλειότης)megaleiotētosgreatness, grandeursplendor of a ruler or deity”majesty,” “greatness,” “grandeur”Christ’s own inherent, divine grandeur displayed visibly at the Transfiguration”kaagunganipun Gusti Yesus” (the majesty of Christ). Risk: Medium. Javanese royal/keraton majesty-language (kaagungan) is the natural vocabulary but must be marked as exceeded infinitely by Christ’s majesty — parallel caution to the baseline’s Lord/Gusti note about not reducing this to keraton-style deference language.

2 Peter 1:17

“For he received from God the Father honour (τιμὴν) and glory (δόξαν), when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory (μεγαλοπρεποῦς δόξης), ‘This is my beloved Son (ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός), in whom I am well pleased.’”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
honourτιμήν (acc. sing. of τιμή)timēnvalue, worth, honoresteem, price, honor bestowed”honor,” “esteem”The Father publicly honors the Son at the Transfiguration”kaurmatan” (honor bestowed). Risk: Low.
gloryδόξαν (acc. sing. of δόξα)doxanglory, honor, radianceGod’s inherent radiant honor; also human honor/reputation”glory,” “splendor”[BASELINE REUSE — “kamulyan”]. Risk: High (per baseline Deity of Christ entry). Confirms Christ receives divine glory from the Father, supporting his deity.
the excellent/majestic gloryμεγαλοπρεποῦς δόξης (gen. sing.)megaloprepous doxēsfitting/befitting greatness + gloryreverent periphrasis avoiding direct naming of God”the Majestic Glory,” “the excellent glory”A circumlocution for God the Father himself, the source of the voice”Kamulyan ingkang Mahaagung” (the Most Majestic Glory), built on baseline “kamulyan.” Risk: High. Must be unambiguous this refers to God the Father speaking, not to an impersonal luminous force or a separate divine entity.
my beloved Sonὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητόςho huios mou ho agapētosthe son of-me the belovedthe Father’s direct address of Christ as his own, dearly loved Son”my beloved Son,” “my Son, whom I love”Direct divine testimony to the unique, eternal Sonship of Christ, the same doctrine anchored in the baseline’s Son_of_God / Putrané Gusti Allah entry”Putra-Ku ingkang Kinasih” (My Son, the Beloved), built on the “Putra” root of baseline Putrané Gusti Allah. Risk: Critical [Sonship of Christ, per baseline doctrine registry]. Must not be softened into an honorary or adoptive-son reading.

2 Peter 1:18

“And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount (τῷ ὄρει τῷ ἁγίῳ).”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
holy mountainτῷ ὄρει τῷ ἁγίῳtō orei tō hagiōthe mountain, the holy [one]a specific, sanctified place of divine revelation (the Mount of Transfiguration)“holy mountain,” “sacred mountain”The Transfiguration site is holy because of God’s manifest presence there, a one-time, located historical event”redi ingkang suci” (the holy mountain), using [BASELINE REUSE — “suci”]. Risk: Medium. Javanese mountains (e.g., Merapi, Semeru, Lawu) carry strong independent sacred-site associations tied to guardian spirits and larung sesaji (ritual offerings to mountain spirits). Must anchor “holy” here to God’s specific historical self-revelation at this one mountain, not to an inherent mountain-spirit sanctity.

2 Peter 1:19

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy (βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον); whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star (φωσφόρος) arise in your hearts.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
more sure/confirmedβεβαιότερον (comparative of βέβαιος)bebaioteronmore firm, more confirmedreliability, certainty, guaranteed standing”more sure,” “more fully confirmed”The eyewitness Transfiguration testimony confirms the OT prophetic word”ingkang saya yakin/tetep” (more certain/firm). Risk: Low.
prophetic wordτὸν προφητικὸν λόγονton prophētikon logonthe prophet-ish word/messagethe body of OT prophetic Scripture pointing to Christ”word of prophecy,” “prophetic message”Builds on [BASELINE REUSE — “pameca” (prophecy)]. Risk: High [Fulfillment of Prophecy, per baseline]. Javanese rendering: “pangandikan pameca” (the prophetic word/message). Must retain linear, one-time OT-to-Christ fulfillment sense, not the cyclical recurring-figure pattern of Javanese prophetic tradition (Jayabaya).
day star / morning starφωσφόρος (nom. sing.)phōsphoroslight-bearer, light-bringerthe planet Venus as morning star; used of Christ in Rev 22:16 (“bright morning star”)“morning star,” “day star”Christ’s full, dawning revelation in believers’ hearts, anticipating his return”lintang panjer rahina” (the morning/dawn-announcing star), a natural Javanese astronomical term. Risk: CRITICAL. NEVER render with a transliterated “Lucifer” — although the Latin Vulgate uses lucifer here as a literal translation of phōsphoros, in nearly all living usage (including Indonesian/Javanese Christian and general usage) “Lucifer” is now exclusively understood as a name for Satan. Using it here would identify Christ with the devil. This is an unrelated Isaiah 14 passage about the king of Babylon; the two must never be merged.

2 Peter 1:20

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy (προφητεία) of the scripture (γραφῆς) is of any private interpretation (ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως).”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
prophecyπροφητεία (nom. sing.)prophēteiaprophetic utterance[BASELINE REUSE — “pameca”]. Risk: Low per baseline, but here operating within a High-risk doctrinal cluster (Inspiration of Scripture).“prophecy”The OT prophetic writings as a body”pameca” — unchanged from baseline.
scriptureγραφῆς (gen. sing. of γραφή)graphēswriting, thing writtenthe sacred, authoritative OT (and by extension NT) writings”scripture,” “the Scriptures,” “the writing”The divinely authoritative written text, as opposed to any human document”Kitab Suci” (the Holy Book/Scripture). Risk: High (new term, first occurrence in this curriculum). “Kitab Suci” is the standard Indonesian/Javanese term for Scripture, but it is also used generically in Indonesian public discourse for the sacred book of any religion (Qur’an, etc.). Every occurrence needs contextual anchoring to mean specifically the God-breathed OT/NT canon, not a generic category term for “a holy book.”
private interpretationἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως (gen. sing.)idias epilyseōsone’s own release/unloosing (interpretation)the act or source of interpreting; debated whether it refers to the prophet’s own interpretive act or the reader’s”private interpretation,” “one’s own interpretation”Prophecy did not originate from a human being’s own understanding — it is divinely sourced, not self-generated”boten miturut penemunipun piyambak” (not according to one’s own private opinion/understanding). Risk: High. Requires a translator note explaining the exegetical debate (origin of prophecy vs. interpretation of prophecy) so the rendering does not overclaim on either side.

2 Peter 1:21

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God (ἅγιοι ἄνθρωποι ἀπὸ θεοῦ) spake as they were moved (φερόμενοι) by the Holy Ghost (Πνεύματος Ἁγίου).”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
will of manθελήματι ἀνθρώπουthelēmati anthrōpouby the will/wish of a humanhuman volition/initiative as source”will of man,” “human will/initiative”Negates any merely human origin for prophecy”miturut karsanipun manungsa” (according to human will). Risk: Low.
holy men of Godἅγιοι ἄνθρωποι ἀπὸ θεοῦhagioi anthrōpoi apo theouholy men, from Godhuman prophetic agents, set apart, sourced/sent from God”holy men of God,” “men moved by God”The OT prophets as divinely-appointed (not self-appointed) spokesmen”tiyang-tiyang suci ingkang saking Gusti Allah” using [BASELINE REUSE — “suci”]. Risk: Medium. Deliberately does NOT reuse baseline “utusan” (apostle), which the baseline reserves specifically for the apostolic office; prophets and apostles are kept as distinct categories.
moved/borne alongφερόμενοι (pres. pass. ptc. of φέρω)pheromenoibeing carried, being borne alongpassive transport by an external agent (as a ship carried by wind)“moved,” “carried along,” “borne”The Spirit is the active divine agent superintending human authors so their word becomes God’s word, while their personalities remain engaged”kagerakaken dening Roh Suci” (moved/set-in-motion by the Holy Spirit). Risk: CRITICAL. This is the central verse for the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine and needs the strongest possible safeguard: it must never be rendered in terms resembling kesurupan (spirit possession/trance-channeling, in which a Javanese medium or dukun is entered by an ancestral or unseen spirit and loses self-control while a foreign voice speaks through them). Biblical inspiration preserves the prophet’s own faculties and personality while guaranteeing the message is fully God’s word — the opposite dynamic from trance possession. A translator note is mandatory every time this verse is rendered.
Holy SpiritΠνεύματος Ἁγίου (gen. sing.)Pneumatos HagiouSpirit, Holy[BASELINE REUSE — “Roh Suci”]. Risk: Critical per baseline (never dhemit/lelembut).”Holy Spirit,” “Holy Ghost”The third Person of the Trinity as the active author behind the human writers”Roh Suci” — unchanged from baseline; carries the added weight here of being the direct agent of inspiration, reinforcing the need to avoid any trance/possession framing noted above.

CHAPTER 1 (verses 1-15) — Remaining Load-Bearing Terms

(1:16-21 treated above as the core passage. This section covers 1:1-15, the salutation, the call to virtue, and Peter’s reminder of his approaching death.)

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
servant/bondservantδοῦλοςdoulosslave, bondservantone owned by and wholly obligated to a master; also a title of honor (“slave of God/Christ”)“servant,” “bondservant,” “slave”Peter identifies himself as Christ’s owned possession, not merely an employee”abdi” (servant/slave). Risk: Medium. Note: distinct from abdi dalem (a keraton court servant’s social rank); the point here is willing, total belonging to Christ, not court-hierarchy status.
apostleἀπόστολοςapostolosone sent[BASELINE REUSE — “utusan”]. Risk: Medium per baseline.”apostle”Peter’s commissioned office”utusan” — unchanged.
like precious faithἰσότιμον πίστινisotimon pistinequal-in-value faithfaith of the same worth/standing, given to all believers regardless of status or ethnicity”faith of equal standing/precious faith”Gentile believers’ faith is equal in value to the apostles’ own — no spiritual class hierarchy”pitados ingkang sami ajinipun”, using [BASELINE REUSE — “pitados”] plus “sami ajinipun” (of equal worth). Risk: Medium. Echoes the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel concern regarding priyayi/wong cilik status hierarchy — no believer’s faith is of lesser worth.
righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christδικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦdikaiosynē tou theou hēmōn kai sōtēros Iēsou Christourighteousness, of-the God of-us and savior, Jesus ChristGrammatically (Granville Sharp construction), “God” and “Savior” describe one person, Jesus Christ”the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ”A strong deity-of-Christ text: Jesus Christ is directly called “our God and Savior”Uses [BASELINE REUSE — “kabeneran” for righteousness] + [BASELINE REUSE — “Gusti Allah”] + new term “Juru Kaslametan” (see Savior, below). Risk: Critical [Deity of Christ, per baseline doctrine registry]. The Javanese sentence structure must preserve that Jesus Christ himself is identified as “Gusti Allah kita saha Juru Kaslametan,” not two separate figures.
Saviorσωτήρsōtērone who saves/rescuesrescuer, deliverer, savior (used of gods, emperors, and of God/Christ in NT)“Savior,” “Deliverer”Christ as the one who accomplishes eternal rescue”Juru Kaslametan” (lit. “the Agent/Author of Salvation”), built directly on [BASELINE REUSE — “kaslametan” root]. Risk: Critical. Carries the same slametan-ritual collision risk as baseline kaslametan and needs the same translator note distinguishing Christ’s once-for-all rescue from the ritual meal — but adds a further distinction: Jesus as “Juru Kaslametan” is himself the divine Rescuer who acts by his own death and resurrection, not a ritual specialist (such as a dukun or elder) who presides over a communal protective rite.
divine powerθεία δύναμιςtheia dynamisgod-ish powerGod’s own miraculous power”divine power,” “his divine power”God’s power grants believers everything needed for life and godliness”panguwaosipun Gusti Allah ingkang kadewatan”, built on [BASELINE REUSE — panguwaosipun Gusti Allah]. Risk: Critical. Same forbidden substitution as baseline (kasekten).
glory and virtueδόξα καὶ ἀρετήdoxa kai aretēglory and excellenceGod’s own splendor and moral excellence, by which he called believers”glory and virtue,” “glory and goodness”God’s own character is the means and goal of the believer’s callingdoxa = [BASELINE REUSE — “kamulyan”]; aretē = new term, see Virtue below.
virtueἀρετήaretēexcellence, moral goodnessmoral excellence, praiseworthy character/conduct”virtue,” “moral excellence,” “goodness”A quality both of God (1:3) and required of believers as fruit of faith (1:5)“kautaman” (virtue/excellence). Risk: Medium-High. Javanese ethical culture prizes cultivated moral excellence (budi pekerti, unggah-ungguh) often pursued as self-achieved refinement, sometimes within a priyayi ideal of cultivated character. Must be taught as fruit flowing from divine power and faith already given (1:3, 1:5), not a self-attained merit earning divine favor.
exceedingly great and precious promisesτὰ μέγιστα καὶ τίμια ἐπαγγέλματαta megista kai timia epangelmatathe greatest and precious promisesGod’s specific covenant pledges”exceedingly great and precious promises”The promises that make possible escaping corruption and sharing the divine nature”prajanji-prajanji ingkang gedhe sanget lan aji”. New term “prajanji” (promise), kept distinct from [BASELINE REUSE — “prajanjian” = covenant]. Risk: Medium. Keep the promise/covenant distinction clear — “prajanji” here names specific pledged promises, not the covenant relationship itself.
partakers of the divine natureθείας κοινωνοὶ φύσεωςtheias koinōnoi physeōsof-divine partners/sharers of-naturebelievers coming to share in God’s moral/holy character (not ontological identity with God)“partakers of the divine nature,” “sharers in God’s nature”Sanctification’s goal: moral transformation into Christlikeness, made possible by escaping corruption”dados peserta ing kodrat sucinipun Gusti Allah” (become participants in the holy nature of God). Risk: CRITICAL — the single highest-risk new term in this book. This verse is the most exegetically dangerous in 2 Peter for a Javanese audience: it must NEVER be rendered using or evoking manunggaling kawula gusti, the central kejawen/Javanese-Sufi mystical teaching (Syekh Siti Jenar tradition) that the human self and the Divine become indistinguishably fused through spiritual attainment — precisely the forbidden substitution already flagged for Incarnation in the baseline. Here the risk is even more acute because the Greek text itself uses participatory language (“partakers,” “sharers”) that superficially resembles the very union-mysticism it must be kept apart from. The Javanese phrase must be built around sipat suci (holy character/quality) received by grace, not manunggal (become one/merged), and must always appear with a note distinguishing moral transformation-by-grace from ontological fusion attained through spiritual discipline.
corruptionφθοράphthoradecay, ruin, destructionmoral corruption; also physical decay/death”corruption,” “decay,” “destruction”The moral ruin from which believers escape by sharing God’s nature”karisakan” (moral ruin/corruption). Risk: Medium-High. Must be anchored to moral corruption caused by lust, not merely natural physical decay.
lustἐπιθυμίαepithymiastrong desire, cravingusually negative: sinful desire; occasionally neutral (strong longing)“lust,” “desire,” “corrupt desire”The driving force of the world’s moral corruption”hawa-nepsu” (base/carnal desire). Risk: Medium. Widely shared Javanese/Islamic-influenced moral vocabulary; ensure it functions as a moral-theological category (desire opposed to God’s will), not merely bodily appetite.
self-controlἐγκράτειαegkrateiainner strength/masterymastery over one’s own desires and impulses”self-control,” “temperance”Part of the virtue-chain in 1:5-7”pangendalèning dhiri” (self-restraint). Risk: Low-Medium.
perseverance/enduranceὑπομονήhypomonēremaining under, endurancesteadfast endurance under trial or pressure”perseverance,” “endurance,” “steadfastness”Endurance built through the virtue-chain, distinct from God’s own patience (see makrothymia, ch. 3)“katahanan” (endurance/steadfastness). Risk: Medium. Kept as a distinct Javanese word from makrothymia (God’s patience, ch. 3) to avoid doctrinal blur between human endurance and divine forbearance.
godlinessεὐσέβειαeusebeiareverence toward God, pietyreverent, God-honoring life and conduct, comprehensive not merely ritual”godliness,” “piety,” “devotion”The goal-oriented, comprehensive reverent life produced by the virtue-chain”kamursidan” (godly/righteous piety). Risk: Medium-High. Must be distinguished from the ritual-performance sense of Indonesian ibadah (formal religious observance); this is holistic reverent character and conduct, not the fulfillment of ritual obligations.
brotherly kindnessφιλαδελφίαphiladelphialove of brother(s)affection among fellow believers”brotherly kindness,” “brotherly love”Mutual love within the believing community”katresnan sesulur” (love among brethren/siblings-in-Christ). Risk: Low.
loveἀγάπηagapēloveself-giving, willed love, distinct from romantic/erotic love”love,” “charity” (older English)The capstone virtue crowning the chain in 1:5-7”katresnan” (love). Risk: Low-Medium. Distinguish from tresna asmara (romantic/erotic love) in teaching contexts.
calling and electionκλῆσιν καὶ ἐκλογήνklēsin kai eklogēncalling and out-choosing[BASELINE REUSE — “katimbalan” / “pepilihanipun Gusti Allah”]. Risk: High per baseline.”calling and election”Believers are to make their calling and election “sure” through diligent growth in virtueUnchanged from baseline; same forbidden substitution (wahyu, the impersonal Javanese royal-legitimacy mandate) applies.
eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviorἡ αἰώνιος βασιλεία τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆροςhē aiōnios basileia tou kyriou hēmōn kai sōtērosthe eternal kingdom of-the lord of-us and saviorthe everlasting reign believers will enter”eternal kingdom”The final hope toward which growth in virtue leadsBuilds on [BASELINE REUSE — “Kratoning Gusti Allah”] + “langgeng” (eternal) + “Gusti” + “Juru Kaslametan.” Risk: Medium, consistent with baseline Kingdom entry.
tabernacle/tent (body)σκήνωμαskēnōmatent, dwellingmetaphor for the mortal body as a temporary dwelling”tabernacle,” “tent,” “body”Peter’s approaching death as “putting off” his bodily tent”kemah [badan]” (tent [of the body]). Risk: Low-Medium. Standard NT body-metaphor (cf. 2 Cor 5); may need a brief explanatory note for readers unfamiliar with the tent-dwelling image.
decease/departureἔξοδοςexodosway out, departureeuphemism for death; deliberately echoes the Exodus”decease,” “departure,” “death”Peter’s death as a deliverance/departure, evoking the Exodus typologically”tilar donya” (departure from the world/death). Risk: Low. Typological echo of Exodus is a teaching enrichment point, not a translation risk.

CHAPTER 2 — Load-Bearing Terms (False Teachers and Their Judgment)

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
false prophets / false teachersψευδοπροφῆται / ψευδοδιδάσκαλοιpseudoprophētai / pseudodidaskaloifalse-prophets / false-teacherscounterfeit prophetic/teaching figures who arose among God’s people historically and will arise in the church”false prophets,” “false teachers”The pattern of counterfeit spiritual authority infiltrating God’s people, then and now”nabi-nabi palsu” / “guru-guru palsu”, using [BASELINE REUSE — “nabi”] plus the widely understood loanword palsu (“false/counterfeit”). Risk: Medium-High. Must stay anchored to the letter’s specific concern (counterfeit teachers arising within the believing community) and must not be read by Javanese Muslim neighbors as a blanket polemic against other religions’ teachers (kyai, ulama); the text’s target is internal to the church.
destructive heresiesαἱρέσεις ἀπωλείαςhaireseis apōleiaschoices/factions of destructiondestructive false doctrines that lead to ruin”destructive heresies,” “damnable heresies”False teaching that leads adherents to eternal ruin”piwulang-piwulang sesat ingkang njalari kabinasan” (false teachings that cause destruction/perdition), using “kabinasan” (see apōleia below). Risk: High.

Risk: High (new term). Distinct from baseline Gusti (Kyrios), which conveys exclusive supreme Lordship broadly; despotēs/Bendara here sharpens specifically the imagery of ownership through a paid price (redemption).
boughtἀγοράσαντα (aor. ptc. of ἀγοράζω)agorasantahaving purchased/boughtcommercial purchase language applied to redemption”bought,” “purchased,” “redeemed”Christ’s death as the price paid to redeem believers”sampun natumbas” (has purchased/bought). Risk: Medium-High. Must retain the atonement/redemption-price imagery, not flatten into a generic “rescued.”

Risk: Medium.
covetousnessπλεονεξίαpleonexiagreed for moreinsatiable desire for gain, often financial exploitation”covetousness,” “greed”The financial motive behind false teachers’ exploitation of believers”kamelikan” / “srei” (greed). Risk: Medium.

Tartarusταρταρώσας (aor. ptc. of ταρταρόω)tartarōsashaving cast into Tartarusthe Greek mythological abyss of divine punishment, used here as the place of confinement for the fallen angels”cast them down to hell,” “cast into Tartarus”The place of holding/confinement for judged spiritual beings awaiting final judgmentTransliterate as “Tartarus” with a gloss, “panggenan paukuman ing jero pati” (a place of punishment in the depths). Risk: Medium. Must not be merged with Javanese underworld/spirit-realm mythology (e.g., the domain of Nyi Roro Kidul, or the wayang underworld Kawah Candradimuka); Tartarus here names a specific place of divine judgment for fallen angels, not a native cosmological underworld.
chains of darknessσειραῖς ζόφουseirais zophouchains/ropes of gloomconfinement in deep darkness awaiting judgment”chains of darkness,” “pits of darkness”The fallen angels’ current state, reserved for judgment”tetalining pepeteng” (chains/bonds of darkness). Risk: Low-Medium.

Risk: Low.

Risk: Low-Medium.
floodκατακλυσμὸνkataklysmonflood, delugethe Noahic Flood”flood,” “deluge”God’s historical judgment on the ancient world”banjir bandhang ageng” (great flood). Risk: Low-Medium. Java has no strong native flood-cosmology myth competing for this space, but note it is a specific historical event (Noah’s flood), not a generic natural-disaster metaphor.
Sodom and Gomorrah / righteous LotΣοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρας / δίκαιον ΛώτSodomōn kai Gomorras / dikaion LōtSodom and Gomorrah / righteous Lotproper names; historical cities judged, and Lot as a righteous man preserved”Sodom and Gomorrah,” “righteous Lot”A second precedent: God judges the wicked and rescues the godly”Sodom lan Gomora” (transliterated, established form); Lot’s righteousness uses [BASELINE REUSE — “kabeneran”-adjective, “Lut ingkang jejeg/bener”]. Risk: Low.
the godly / the unjustτὸν εὐσεβῆ / ἀδίκουςton eusebē / adikousthe godly [one] / unjust onesGod’s discernment between the righteous, whom he rescues, and the unrighteous, whom he keeps for judgment”the godly,” “the unjust”God knows how to deliver the godly and reserve the unjust for judgmenteusebēs → related to kamursidan (godliness, ch.1); adikos → “tiyang boten adil / tiyang duraka.” Risk: Medium.
reserved unto the day of judgmentεἰς ἡμέραν κρίσεως κολαζομένους τηρεῖνeis hēmeran kriseōs kolazomenous tēreinunto day of-judgment being-punished to-keepthe unrighteous are kept in a state of ongoing punishment awaiting the final judgment day”reserved for the day of judgment, to be punished”The certainty of final eschatological judgment for the unrighteous”Dinten Pengadilan” (Day of Judgment) — see fuller entry, ch. 3 below; “tērein → nyimpen/ngampil” (to keep/reserve). Risk: High.
dominion/lordship (despised)κυριότητοςkyriotētoslordship, authorityrightful ruling authority; here, angelic/divine governance structures despised by false teachers”government,” “authority,” “dominion”False teachers arrogantly reject legitimate spiritual authority structures”pangwaos” (authority/dominion). Risk: Medium-High. Shares a root with baseline Gusti (Kyrios); must be handled carefully so this abstract-authority noun does not blur with the Lordship-of-Christ title itself.
glorious ones / dignitiesδόξαςdoxasgloriesa plural, personified use of “glory,” referring to angelic/celestial beings of rank”dignities,” “glorious ones,” “celestial beings”Even angelic beings do not bring reviling accusation against these “glorious ones” (unlike the false teachers, who blaspheme what they do not understand)“para pangkat mulya” (exalted/dignified ones). Risk: High (new term). A translator note is required distinguishing this personified plural use of doxa from the baseline’s established abstract-noun rendering “kamulyan” (glory), since “kamulyan-kamulyan” cannot naturally refer to persons in Javanese.
natural brute beastsἄλογα ζῷαaloga zōanon-rational animalsanimals lacking reason, acting purely on instinct”unreasoning animals,” “irrational creatures”False teachers behave like instinct-driven animals rather than reasoning moral agents”kewan tanpa akal” (animals without reason). Risk: Low.
BalaamΒαλαάμBalaamproper nameOT prophet-for-hire who loved the wages of unrighteousness”Balaam”A prototype of a teacher motivated by greed rather than truth”Bileam” (established Indonesian/Javanese Bible form). Risk: Low.
libertyἐλευθερίανeleutherianfreedomfreedom/independence, here falsely promised by false teachers while they themselves are enslaved to corruption”liberty,” “freedom”Ironic reversal: false teachers promise freedom but are themselves slaves to corruption”kamardikan” (freedom/liberty). Risk: Medium-High. Kamardikan is also the standard, emotionally weighted Indonesian nationalist term for national independence (Kemerdekaan Indonesia); readers must understand this as a claim of spiritual freedom in this context, not a political concept.
slave/servant of corruptionδοῦλοι τῆς φθορᾶςdouloi tēs phthorasslaves of-the corruptionironic reversal: those who promise liberty are themselves enslaved”slaves of corruption”The self-condemning irony of false teachersdoulos → “batur” (slave/bondservant, distinct register from “abdi” used of willing service to Christ in 1:1); phthora → [carried from ch.1] “karisakan.” Risk: Medium.
spots and blemishes / without spot and blamelessσπίλοι καὶ μῶμοι / ἄσπιλοι καὶ ἀμώμητοιspiloi kai mōmoi / aspiloi kai amōmētoistains and blemishes / unstained and unblemishedmoral defilement vs. moral purity, sacrificial-purity imagery applied ethically”spots and blemishes,” “without spot and blameless”False teachers are blemishes among believers (2:13); by contrast believers are called to be found spotless (3:14)“cacad lan cela” / “tanpa cacad lan tanpa cela”. Risk: Medium. Ties to the sanctification/holiness (suci, pensucen) doctrinal cluster established in the baseline.
the way of righteousness / holy commandmentἡ ὁδὸς τῆς δικαιοσύνης / ἁγία ἐντολήhē hodos tēs dikaiosynēs / hagia entolēthe way of-righteousness / holy commandmentthe whole path of gospel-obedience once known and then abandoned by apostates”the way of righteousness,” “the holy commandment”Apostasy is worse than never having known the way at all”dalan kabeneran” / “pepakon suci”, using [BASELINE REUSE — “kabeneran,” “suci”]. Risk: Medium.
dog/vomit; sow/mire (proverbs)κύων … ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον ἐξέραμα / ὗς … εἰς κυλισμὸν βορβόρουkyōn epi to idion exerama / hys eis kylismon borboroudog to its own vomit / sow to wallowing of mudproverbial images (Prov 26:11 and a common extra-biblical proverb) illustrating apostates’ return to former corruption”a dog returns to its vomit,” “a sow that is washed returns to wallowing in the mire”Vivid warning of apostasy’s true nature — reversion, not real changeRetain as vivid proverbial idiom per idiom-handling rule: “asu bali marang wutahane, babi bali gluntang ing luthek.” Risk: Low-Medium. Doctrinal weight (apostasy warning) must survive the idiom’s vivid, even indelicate, imagery — do not soften.

CHAPTER 3 — Load-Bearing Terms (The Day of the Lord, Patience of God, and Final Judgment)

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningJavanese Rendering & Risk
scoffersἐμπαῖκταιempaiktaimockersthose who deride/scoff, specifically at the promise of Christ’s return”scoffers,” “mockers”Last-days scoffers who doubt Christ’s promised return because of its apparent delay”tiyang ingkang moyoki” (mockers/scoffers). Risk: Medium.
last daysἐπ’ ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶνep’ eschatōn tōn hēmerōnupon last of-the daysthe final eschatological era inaugurated by Christ’s first coming, running until his return”the last days,” “the end times”Scoffers arising is itself a sign of the last days, already underway”dina-dina pungkasan” (the last/final days). Risk: Medium-High. Risk of collapsing into the generic Islamic-influenced akhir zaman concept circulating broadly in Indonesian public discourse; must be anchored specifically to the biblical framework inaugurated by Christ’s first coming and consummated at his return, not a generic end-times folk notion.
the fathers fell asleepοἱ πατέρες ἐκοιμήθησανhoi pateres ekoimēthēsanthe fathers fell-asleepeuphemism for death, used by the scoffers as their evidence that nothing has changed since creation”the fathers fell asleep,” “our ancestors died”The scoffers’ argument from apparent divine inactivity/delay”para leluhur sampun seda” (the ancestors have died). Risk: Low, but note care needed: “leluhur” here is a neutral descriptive term for “forefathers” in the scoffers’ argument, not an endorsement of ancestor-veneration; distinct usage from baseline’s caution about “Leluhur” replacing “Rama”/Father for God.
creationκτίσεωςktiseōscreation, created thingthe created cosmos, God’s handiwork from the beginning”creation,” “the created world”The scoffers wrongly assume creation’s stability proves God’s non-intervention”titahing Gusti Allah” (God’s creation/created work). Risk: Low-Medium.
word of Godὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦho logos tou theouthe word of-the GodGod’s own effective, creative speech”the word of God”Creation and the coming judgment both occur by God’s spoken word, not impersonal cosmic process”pangandikanipun Gusti Allah” (the word/speech of God). Risk: Medium-High. Must be kept personal and volitional (God’s own speech-act), avoiding any resonance with impersonal cosmic-origin frameworks found in Javanese mystical cosmology (e.g., sangkan paraning dumadi, teachings on the impersonal origin and destination of existence).
the world destroyed by waterὁ τότε κόσμος ὕδατι κατακλυσθεὶς ἀπώλετοho tote kosmos hydati kataklystheis apōletothe then world by-water having-been-flooded perishedthe Noahic flood as historical precedent for the coming fire-judgment”the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished”God has already judged the world once by water; he will judge it again by fireReuses “banjir” (flood, ch.2) + apollymi → “nemahi karisakan/pejah”. Risk: Low-Medium.
heavens and earth reserved for fireοἱ νῦν οὐρανοὶ καὶ ἡ γῆ … πυρὶ τηρούμενοιhoi nyn ouranoi kai hē gē … pyri tēroumenoithe now heavens and the earth … for-fire being-keptthe present created order is being held/reserved for a future judgment by fire”the heavens and earth … reserved unto fire”The certain future dissolution of the present cosmos at the Day of Judgment”langit lan bumi … kasimpen kangge kabesmi ing latu”. Risk: High. Must not merge with the Javanese apocalyptic-prophetic tradition of jaman kalabendu (the “age of calamity/destruction,” part of Ranggawarsita’s prophetic corpus alongside the Jayabaya tradition), which envisions a cyclical era of cosmic destruction preceding a Ratu Adil’s restoration. Biblical cosmic judgment by fire is linear, God-ordained, final, and Christ-centered — not one turn of a repeating cosmic-historical wheel.
Day of the Lordἡμέρα κυρίουhēmera kyriouday of-lordthe decisive future day of God’s/Christ’s judgment and consummation”the Day of the Lord”The certain, climactic day when Christ returns to judge and renew all things”Dinten Gustinipun” (the Day of the Lord), built on [BASELINE REUSE — “Gusti”]. Risk: High. Must not be reduced to the generic apocalyptic idea of “kiamat” (a shared Islamic-Javanese eschatological term) without Christ-specific anchoring — this Day belongs specifically to the returning Lord Jesus, not a generic cosmic ending.
Day of Judgmentἡμέρα κρίσεωςhēmera kriseōsday of-judgmentthe day of final divine reckoning for all humanity, believers and unbelievers”the Day of Judgment”The certainty of a final accounting before God”Dinten Pengadilan” (Day of Judgment). Risk: High. Shares vocabulary with the Islamic Hari Kiamat/Hari Pengadilan tradition; must be anchored to judgment executed by the risen and returning Christ specifically (cf. Rom 14:9-10 baseline Lordship material), not left as an unanchored generic concept.
one day as a thousand yearsμία ἡμέρα παρὰ κυρίῳ ὡς χίλια ἔτηmia hēmera para kyriō hōs chilia etēone day with lord as thousand yearsa hermeneutical principle: God’s experience/measurement of time is not bound like human time”one day is with the Lord as a thousand years”God’s apparent “delay” is not actually delay, since he is not bound by human time-perception”sadinten kagem Gusti kados sèwu taun” (one day with the Lord is as a thousand years). Risk: Low-Medium, mainly an interpretive/hermeneutical note rather than a term-collision risk.
longsuffering / patience (of God)μακροθυμεῖ / μακροθυμίανmakrothymei / makrothymianis-long-tempered / long-sufferingGod’s deliberate, purposeful forbearance, giving time for repentance rather than immediate judgment”longsuffering,” “patience,” “slow to anger”God’s delay in judgment is patience giving opportunity for repentance, not indifference or inability”kasabaranipun Gusti Allah” (the patience/longsuffering of God), following the baseline’s genitive-construction pattern (cf. panguwaosipun Gusti Allah). Risk: High. Javanese ethical culture prizes sabar (patience) as a personal virtue, and this could collapse God’s active, purposeful forbearance into the passive fatalistic ethic of nrimo ing pandum (resigned acceptance of one’s lot) — the very risk the baseline already flags for Providence. God’s patience here is a deliberate, personal, time-limited act of mercy giving opportunity for repentance, not passive resignation to fate.
not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentanceμὴ βουλόμενός τινας ἀπολέσθαι ἀλλὰ πάντας εἰς μετάνοιαν χωρῆσαιmē boulomenos tinas apolesthai alla pantas eis metanoian chōrēsainot willing some to-perish but all unto repentance to-comeGod’s desired outcome for all, motivating his patience”not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance”The purpose of God’s patience: giving space for genuine repentanceUses “kabinasan” (perish/perdition, ch.2) + new term “pamratobat” (repentance). Risk: High, given the universality claim (“all”) intersects with the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel concern.
repentanceμετάνοιαmetanoiachange of minda genuine, inward turning from sin toward God”repentance,” “turning”The intended response to God’s patient forbearance”pamratobat” (repentance/turning back). Risk: Medium-High. Must be distinguished from ruwatan, the Javanese ritual-cleansing ceremony performed to remove inherited misfortune or a curse (sukerta); biblical repentance is a personal, inward moral turning toward God, not a ritual purification act performed by a specialist on one’s behalf.
Day of the Lord as a thiefἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτηςhēmera kyriou hōs kleptēsday of-lord as thiefthe Day’s sudden, unpredictable, unannounced arrival”the Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night”Urgency and unpredictability of Christ’s return demand ongoing readinessRetain the established idiom: “kados maling ing wanci dalu” (like a thief at night). Risk: Low-Medium. Widely used and intelligible NT eschatological idiom; retain literally per idiom-handling guidance.
elementsστοιχεῖαstoicheiabasic components, elemental substancesthe fundamental physical/material components of the created cosmos”elements,” “elemental things”The physical elements of creation will be dissolved at the Day of the Lord”unsur-unsur jagad” (elements of the cosmos). Risk: Medium. Some caution warranted against confusion with Javanese cosmological-numerological “unsur” concepts tied to kiblat papat lima pancer (the four-directions-plus-center cosmological/numerological framework) or classical four/five-element schemes; here it refers strictly to the physical constituents of the created world dissolving under God’s judgment.
new heavens and new earthκαινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινὴνkainous ouranous kai gēn kainēnnew heavens and earth newthe promised, permanent, renewed creation following judgment”new heavens and a new earth”The believer’s ultimate hope: not annihilation but renewal, where righteousness dwells”langit anyar lan bumi anyar”. Risk: Medium. Must be understood as a one-time, linear act of final renewal by God, not a cyclical destruction-and-rebirth pattern (as found in some wayang cosmological ages or Hindu-Javanese kalpa-cycle concepts).
wherein dwelleth righteousnessἐν οἷς δικαιοσύνη κατοικεῖen hois dikaiosynē katoikeiin which righteousness dwellsthe new creation as the permanent home of God’s righteous order”in which righteousness dwells”The moral/relational character of the coming new creationUses [BASELINE REUSE — “kabeneran”] + “dedunung/manggen” (dwell). Risk: Low-Medium.
holy conversation and godlinessἁγίαις ἀναστροφαῖς καὶ εὐσεβείαιςhagiais anastrophais kai eusebeiaisholy conducts and godlinessesthe comprehensive holy manner of life expected in light of coming judgment”holy conduct and godliness”Ethical urgency flowing from eschatological certaintyUses [BASELINE REUSE — “suci”] + “kamursidan” (godliness, carried from ch.1) + “patrap/tumindak” (conduct/way of life). Risk: Medium.
diligent to be found without spot, and blameless, in peaceσπουδάσατε ἄσπιλοι καὶ ἀμώμητοι … ἐν εἰρήνῃspoudasate aspiloi kai amōmētoi … en eirēnēbe-diligent unstained and unblemished … in peacethe believer’s diligent pursuit of holy readiness for Christ’s return”be diligent to be found spotless and blameless, at peace”Practical ethical exhortation flowing from the certainty of Christ’s returnUses “tanpa cacad lan tanpa cela” (carried from ch.2) + [BASELINE REUSE — “katentreman” for peace]. Risk: Medium, consistent with baseline Peace entry.
longsuffering of our Lord is salvationτὴν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν μακροθυμίαν σωτηρίαν ἡγεῖσθεtēn tou kyriou hēmōn makrothymian sōtērian hēgeisthethe of-the lord of-us patience salvation considerGod’s patience in delaying judgment is itself to be understood as salvation-opportunity, not indifference”account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation”Directly links God’s patience (ch. 3) with the doctrine of salvation, a key cross-reference verse in this bookUses “kasabaranipun Gusti Allah” (patience, above) + [BASELINE REUSE — “kaslametan”]. Risk: Critical — this verse combines two of the book’s highest-risk terms in a single clause and requires a compound translator note covering both the sabar/nrimo ing pandum risk and the kaslametan/slametan-ritual risk simultaneously.
scriptures / wrest to their own destructionγραφὰς / στρεβλοῦσιν … πρὸς τὴν ἰδίαν αὐτῶν ἀπώλειανgraphas / streblousin … pros tēn idian autōn apōleianwritings / they-twist … unto the own of-them destructionunstable people distort apostolic writings (here including Paul’s letters as “Scripture”), bringing ruin on themselves”the scriptures,” “twist to their own destruction”Affirms apostolic writings’ scriptural authority (an early witness to a developing NT canon) while warning against willful misinterpretationReuses “Kitab Suci” (Scripture, from core passage) + “ngowahi/nyeleweng maknanipun” (twist/distort the meaning of) + “kabinasan.” Risk: High, consistent with the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine’s generic-term collision risk flagged in the core passage.
steadfastnessστηριγμοῦstērigmoufirm standing, fixednessstability of conviction, resisting being carried away by error”steadfastness,” “firm footing”The goal believers must guard, in contrast to being led away by lawless error”kamanteban” (firmness/steadfastness). Risk: Low-Medium.
grow in grace and knowledgeαὐξάνετε δὲ ἐν χάριτι καὶ γνώσει τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦauxanete de en chariti kai gnōsei tou kyriou hēmōn kai sōtēros Iēsou Christougrow but in grace and knowledge of-the lord of-us and savior Jesus Christongoing, progressive growth in both God’s unmerited favor and true relational knowledge of Christ”grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”The book’s closing exhortation, tying together grace, knowledge, and the Savior titleUses [BASELINE REUSE — “sih-rahmat” for grace] + new term “pangertosan” (knowledge, see Glossary) + [BASELINE REUSE — “Gusti”] + “Juru Kaslametan” (Savior). Risk: Critical, as the book’s climactic verse combining several Critical/High terms; must be rendered identically wherever quoted, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency principle.
knowledge (full/true)γνῶσις / ἐπίγνωσιςgnōsis / epignōsisknowledge / full-knowledgerelational, saving knowledge of Christ, as opposed to speculative or esoteric knowledge”knowledge,” “full knowledge,” “true knowledge”The goal of the whole letter (cf. 1:2,3,8; 2:20; 3:18): true knowledge of Christ produces virtue and escape from corruption”pangertosan” (understanding/true knowledge), with epignōsis intensified as “pangertosan ingkang leres/jangkep” (full/correct knowledge). Risk: High (new term, load-bearing across the whole book). Javanese kejawen tradition places strong emphasis on ngèlmu — esoteric spiritual knowledge or wisdom pursued and attained through ascetic discipline, often associated with a dukun or spiritual guide, and valued partly for the power/protection it confers. Epignōsis of Christ must be taught as relational, Spirit-given knowledge received through faith, not a secret wisdom earned through ascetic pursuit or valued for the spiritual potency it grants.
glory (doxology)ἡ δόξα καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς ἡμέραν αἰῶνοςhē doxa kai nyn kai eis hēmeran aiōnosthe glory both now and unto day of-eternityclosing doxology ascribing eternal glory to Christ”to him be glory both now and forever”The letter’s closing worship-confession of Christ’s eternal glory[BASELINE REUSE — “kamulyan”] + “Amin” (established transliteration). Risk: High, consistent with baseline Deity of Christ / Glory entries.
