Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: 2 John (Koine Greek) — English → Javanese
0. Book Overview
2 John is a single-chapter epistle of 13 verses in standard versification (2 John 1:1–13). There is no chapter division beyond chapter 1. Per the PRD full-book coverage mandate, this document achieves complete coverage of the entire book by combining:
- Verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage, 2 John 1:4–11 (Section 1 below), and
- Verse-by-verse treatment of the remainder of the book, 2 John 1:1–3 and 1:12–13 (Section 2 below), which completes coverage of every verse in the epistle.
Because 2 John has only one chapter, the “chapter-by-chapter” requirement of the PRD is satisfied by this single combined treatment; there is no second chapter to report as “no new vocabulary.” This is noted explicitly here to confirm the full-book coverage mandate has been met for a one-chapter book.
Author: ὁ πρεσβύτερος (“the elder” — traditionally understood as the Apostle John). Audience: ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτῆς (“the elect lady and her children” — probably either an individual Christian woman and her household, or, more likely by majority scholarly opinion, a personification of a local congregation and its members; this interpretive ambiguity is itself a translation-relevant fact, addressed at v.1 below). Occasion: a pastoral warning against traveling teachers who deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, combined with instruction to withhold hospitality from such teachers. Governing doctrines for this curriculum: Walking in Truth and Love; Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ.
All terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused here exactly as recorded there. New terms required for 2 John are proposed with the same rigor as the baseline and are collected in 08_core_glossary.md for registry addition.
1. Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis: 2 John 1:4–11
2 John 1:4
English (ESV): “I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χαίρω (ἐχάρην) | echarēn | ”I rejoiced/was glad” | joy, gladness, delight (aorist, decisive past joy) | rejoiced, was glad, was overjoyed | The elder’s pastoral joy at seeing genuine, observable discipleship — sets the epistle’s warm tone before its warning | New term: bungah/bingah (verb); as noun kabungahan — Low risk, standard vocabulary |
| τέκνα | tekna | ”children” | biological children; spiritual children/disciples; members of a household or congregation | children, sons and daughters, offspring | Some members of the addressee’s household/congregation, walking faithfully — reused sense also appears in v.1, v.13 | New term: para putra — Low risk; krama-appropriate, no theological distortion since Javanese already uses “putra” broadly for “child” in respectful register |
| περιπατέω (περιπατοῦντας) | peripatountas | ”walking” (present participle) | literal ambulation; figurative for habitual conduct/way of life | walking, living, conducting themselves | Central idiom of the epistle and of the “Walking in Truth and Love” doctrine: a sustained, observable lifestyle of fidelity to Christ’s teaching, not a single act | New term: lumampah — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| ἀλήθεια | alētheia | ”truth” | factual truth; the content of apostolic/Christian teaching; personal fidelity/trustworthiness | truth, the truth, truthfulness | The revealed gospel content centered on Christ, and a life lived in conformity to it — distinct from mere sincerity | New term: kayektosan — Medium-High risk: see doctrine note below |
| ἐντολή | entolē | ”commandment” | a specific directive; used here and throughout for the love-command | commandment, command, instruction | The commandment received “from the Father” to love one another (unpacked in v.5–6) | New term: pepaken — Medium risk: see doctrine note below |
| πατήρ | patēr | ”Father” | God as Father; a human father | Father, the Father | God the Father as the source and authority behind the love-commandment | REUSE baseline: Rama (High risk; never Leluhur — ancestor-veneration collision per baseline note) |
Verse-level doctrine note — Walking in Truth and Love: This verse introduces the epistle’s central metaphor of “walking” as sustained conduct. Lumampah (to walk, krama) shares a root with laku, the term for a Javanese mystical ascetic spiritual exercise (nglakoni laku, laku prihatin — disciplines undertaken by a kejawen practitioner to accumulate spiritual power or attain enlightenment). This is analogous to the tapa/tirakat collision already flagged in the baseline under “holy.” Teaching materials must make explicit that “walking in truth” describes an ordinary, grace-enabled pattern of faithful living in response to what one already has in Christ, not a self-directed ascetic discipline undertaken to attain or earn spiritual standing. Flag: High.
Truth (kayektosan): Because the baseline already assigns kabeneran to “righteousness,” a distinct word is required for “truth” to avoid doctrinal blurring between forensic right-standing (kabeneran) and the content/reality of the gospel (kayektosan). Flag: Medium-High — requires a consistent glossary entry and translator note distinguishing the two, since Indonesian-language Bible tradition sometimes uses a single root (“kebenaran”) for both concepts, a collapse Javanese should avoid.
2 John 1:5
English (ESV): “And now I ask you, dear lady… but the one we have had from the beginning — that we love one another.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐρωτάω | erōtō | ”I ask/request” | request among equals/friends (contrast with commanding) | I ask, I request, I appeal to | A pastoral appeal, not a top-down decree — softens the authority dynamic even while restating a commandment | New term: nyuwun — Low risk |
| κυρία | kyria | ”lady, mistress” (feminine of κύριος) | a woman of social standing addressed with respect; possibly personification of a congregation | (dear) lady, lady, mistress | Address to either an actual Christian woman or, by majority scholarly view, a personified local church — genuinely ambiguous in the source text | New term: Ibu ingkang kinurmatan (“honored lady/mother”) — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| ἐντολὴ καινή | entolē kainē | ”new commandment” | a commandment recently given vs. one long-held | new commandment, new command | Explicitly denied here — the love command is NOT new but ancient and apostolic, contrasting with any novel teaching (anticipating v.7–10) | Reuse pepaken + New term: enggal (new) — Medium risk |
| ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς | ap’ archēs | ”from the beginning” | from the start of a period; from Christian origins; (in John’s writings, sometimes echoing eternity) | from the beginning, from the start, from the first | The apostolic teaching’s continuity from the earliest proclamation of Christ — a “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ” marker | New term: saking wiwitan — Low-Medium risk |
| ἀγαπάω ἀλλήλους | agapōmen allēlous | ”we should love one another” | mutual, reciprocal love among believers | love one another, love each other | The content of the ancient commandment — communal love as the outworking of truth | New term: tresna-tinresnan (mutual love) — see “love” doctrine note below |
Doctrine note — Elect Lady (κυρία): Because Gusti is reserved exclusively in the baseline for the divine title “Lord” (masculine, applied to God/Christ, never diluted — see baseline lord entry), κυρία must never be rendered with any Gusti-based term, even though κυρία is etymologically related to κύριος. A separate honorific for a respected woman (Ibu ingkang kinurmatan) avoids any confusion with the divine Lordship title. A translator/teacher note must also flag the genuine ancient-and-modern interpretive debate (real individual woman vs. personified congregation) so that the ambiguity is preserved rather than resolved by translation choice. Flag: High.
2 John 1:6
English (ESV): “And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγάπη | agapē | ”love” | selfless, willed love; distinct from ἔρως (romantic) and φιλία (friendship affection) | love, charity | Defined here concretely as obedient conduct, not sentiment — love and obedience are inseparable | New term: katresnan — Medium risk: see doctrine note below |
| κατὰ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ | kata tas entolas autou | ”according to his commandments” | conformity/standard | according to his commandments, in keeping with his commands | Love is defined by conformity to Christ’s commandments, not by subjective feeling | Reuse pepaken (plural) — Medium risk |
| περιπατέω (repeated) | peripatōmen / peripatēte | ”walk / should walk” | see v.4 | walk, live, conduct oneself | Reinforces the “walking” metaphor as the chapter’s dominant idiom | See v.4 note — lumampah, High risk (laku collision) |
Doctrine note — Love (ἀγάπη/katresnan): Katresnan is already the standard Javanese Christian word for divine and Christian love and carries no direct kejawen ritual collision documented in the baseline. However, in ordinary usage it can carry connotations of romantic or familial affection; teaching material must specify that biblical ἀγάπη is a willed, commandment-shaped love, not primarily an emotion. Flag: Medium.
2 John 1:7
English (ESV): “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.”
This is the theological hinge verse of the epistle — the anchor for the “Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation” doctrine.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πλάνος | planos | ”deceiver, wandering one” | one who leads others astray; a wandering imposter/charlatan | deceiver, imposter, seducer | A person actively teaching falsehood about Christ’s nature, not merely mistaken but leading others into error | New term: tiyang panasar — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| ἐξέρχομαι (ἐξῆλθον) | exēlthon | ”went out” | departure, going forth (often from a community, cf. 1 John 2:19) | went out, went forth, have gone out | These deceivers emerged from within or moved through the Christian community/mission field, not from clearly outside it | New term: medal/lunga — Low risk |
| κόσμος | kosmos | ”world” | the created order; humanity in rebellion against God; the present age/sphere of human affairs | world, the world | The sphere of human society into which false teaching about Christ spreads | New term: donya (NOT jagad) — Medium-High risk: see doctrine note below |
| ὁμολογέω | homologeō | ”confess, acknowledge, agree” | public affirmation; verbal acknowledgment of a proposition or person | confess, acknowledge, admit, profess | A positive, propositional, public affirmation of the truth about Christ’s incarnation — its absence marks the false teacher | New term: ngakeni — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν | Iēsoun Christon | ”Jesus Christ” | proper name + title | Jesus Christ | The proper name of the incarnate Son | REUSE baseline: Gusti Yesus (Critical) + Kristus (per baseline transliteration standard) |
| ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί | erchomenon en sarki | ”coming in flesh” (present participle) | Christ’s real, ongoing/completed assumption of human nature; some manuscripts read perfect ἐληλυθότα (“having come”), same doctrinal force | come/coming in the flesh, come in human flesh | The Incarnation itself: the eternal Son truly, bodily, permanently took on real human nature — the doctrinal core the deceivers deny | REUSE/extend baseline Incarnation phrase: Gusti Yesus Kristus ingkang rawuh dados manungsa — Critical: see doctrine note below |
| ἀντίχριστος | antichristos | ”antichrist” | one who opposes/replaces Christ; in John’s letters, specifically one who denies the incarnation and Christ’s identity | antichrist, the antichrist, one against Christ | The theological category naming the spirit and pattern of denying Christ’s incarnate identity | New term: antikristus (transliteration) — Critical risk: see doctrine note below |
Doctrine note — Denial of the Incarnation (ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί / antikristus): This verse is the direct New Testament ground for the baseline’s Critical “Incarnation” doctrine (Gusti Allah dados manungsa), now applied polemically: whoever denies that Jesus Christ came in real flesh embodies the “antichrist” spirit. All baseline forbidden substitutions apply without exception: never render this concept through manunggaling kawula gusti (the kejawen teaching of self-and-Divine mystical fusion), which would actually invert the verse’s meaning — the deceivers denounced here are precisely those denying a real, historical, once-for-all incarnation, the very thing manunggaling kawula gusti reframes as a repeatable mystical attainment. Flag: Critical.
Doctrine note — Antichrist (antikristus): Recommend direct transliteration antikristus (parallel to how “Mesias” is transliterated rather than translated in the baseline, and how “Kristus” is transliterated per the AI translation requirements). This avoids two risks: (1) diluting the technical NT category into a vague “musuh” (enemy) term, and (2) inadvertently invoking Javanese eschatological figures from the Jayabaya prophetic tradition (the same tradition already flagged Critical under “messiah” for Satrio Piningit) as though “antichrist” were a rival prophesied figure within that same folk-prophetic framework. Flag: Critical.
Doctrine note — Deceiver (πλάνος/tiyang panasar): Distinguish from the baseline’s existing caution against confusing prophet with dhukun (folk diviner/healer). The πλάνος of 2 John is not primarily a magical practitioner but a false teacher about Christ’s identity; teaching material should keep the emphasis doctrinal (denying the incarnation) rather than occult. Flag: High.
Doctrine note — World (κόσμος/donya): Javanese kejawen cosmology speaks of jagad ageng (the macrocosmos) and jagad alit (the microcosmos, the human self) as a foundational metaphysical framework. Using jagad for κόσμος here risks pulling “many deceivers have gone out into the world” into that cosmological register. Donya (the everyday, lived human world/age) is the safer choice, consistent with how “world” functions elsewhere in Johannine theology as the sphere of human society and its opposition to God, not a mystical cosmos structure. Flag: Medium-High.
Doctrine note — Confess (ὁμολογέω/ngakeni): Public, propositional acknowledgment of Christ’s incarnate identity is the litmus test of true doctrine in this letter. Because Javanese society is Muslim-majority, care is needed so that “confessing” is not read through the lens of the Islamic syahadat (creedal recitation) as a fixed ritual formula; the emphasis must remain on affirming a specific truth-content (that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh) rather than performing a verbal ritual. Flag: High.
2 John 1:8
English (ESV): “Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βλέπετε ἑαυτούς | blepete heautous | ”watch/see to yourselves” | self-vigilance, guarding oneself | watch yourselves, look to yourselves, be on your guard | A call to active doctrinal vigilance against the deceivers just described | New term: diwaspadakaken — Medium risk |
| ἀπόλλυμι (ἀπολέσητε) | apolesēte | ”lose, destroy” | forfeiture of something possessed/earned; (elsewhere) perishing/destruction | lose, forfeit, destroy | Forfeiting the fruit of faithful ministry/discipleship through doctrinal compromise | New term: kelangan — Medium risk |
| ἐργάζομαι (εἰργασάμεθα) | eirgasametha | ”we worked, we labored” | effort expended, labor invested | worked for, labored for, accomplished | The elder’s and the community’s shared investment in the addressee’s spiritual growth | New term: pendamelan — Low risk |
| μισθὸς πλήρης | misthos plērēs | ”full wage/reward” | a laborer’s wage; a reward for faithful service; in NT usage, often eschatological reward | full reward, full wages, complete reward | Eschatological reward for persevering fidelity — must be kept distinct from earning salvation itself | New term: ganjaran ingkang jangkep — Medium risk: see doctrine note below |
Doctrine note — Reward vs. Grace: Because Grace (sih-rahmat) is Critical-risk in the baseline precisely because nothing is owed or repayable in salvation, teaching material on “full reward” must clarify that this reward concerns faithful perseverance in already-secured salvation, not a wage that earns standing before God — avoiding any drift toward utang budi (reciprocal social debt) framing already forbidden in the baseline for grace. Flag: Medium.
2 John 1:9
English (ESV): “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
This is the theological anchor for “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προάγω (προάγων) | proagōn | ”goes ahead, goes beyond, progresses” | claiming spiritual advancement/progress beyond what is given; running ahead of received teaching | goes on ahead, goes beyond, transgresses, is progressive | A false claim to spiritual advancement that actually abandons apostolic teaching — directly relevant to any “progressive revelation” or esoteric-advancement claim | New term: nglancangi (“to go/run ahead of”) — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| μένω (μένων) | menōn | ”abides, remains, continues” | ongoing residence/continuance; loyalty, perseverance | abides, remains, continues, stays | Persevering fidelity to the apostolic teaching about Christ, as a mark of genuine relationship with God | New term: tetep manggen / lestantun — Medium risk |
| διδαχή τοῦ Χριστοῦ | didachē tou Christou | ”the teaching of Christ” | the body of apostolic doctrine about and from Christ | the teaching of Christ, Christ’s doctrine, the doctrine of Christ | The fixed, complete, apostolic body of teaching concerning Christ’s identity and work — the boundary marker of true faith in this letter | New term: piwulangipun Gusti Yesus Kristus — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| θεὸν ἔχει / οὐκ ἔχει | theon echei / ouk echei | ”has God / does not have God” | possessing a genuine relationship with God vs. lacking one | has God, does not have God, is without God | A stark relational claim: rejecting the true teaching about Christ is equivalent to having no relationship with God at all, regardless of professed piety | Reuse Gusti Allah (Critical) in phrase construction — High risk (see phrase note below) |
| πατέρα καὶ υἱόν | patera kai huion | ”Father and Son” | the first two Persons named together | the Father and the Son | Genuine possession of the Father is inseparable from fidelity to the Son’s true identity (again reinforcing v.7’s incarnation theme) | Reuse Rama (High) + Putrané Gusti Allah (Critical) |
Doctrine note — Teaching of Christ (διδαχή/piwulang): Javanese religious culture includes a live pattern of guru-murid relationships in which a spiritual teacher’s private teaching is progressively unfolded and closely guarded by disciples (paralleling the baseline’s caution under “Inspiration of Scripture” about esoteric mystical-lineage transmission). 2 John 9 directly opposes this pattern: the “teaching of Christ” is a fixed, complete, publicly received apostolic deposit, and προάγων (“going ahead/beyond”) names exactly the guru-style claim to advance beyond it. Teaching material must make this contrast explicit. Flag: High.
Doctrine note — “Has God” phrase: This verse’s binary framing (“has God” / “does not have God”) must retain its full force in Javanese — it should not be softened into a statement about degrees of spiritual attainment, which would itself risk importing a kasampurnan-style (mystical-perfection) gradation the baseline already excludes for “righteousness.” Flag: High.
2 John 1:10
English (ESV): “If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting.”
This is the theological anchor for “Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment” — likely the highest cultural-collision risk in the whole epistle.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φέρω (οὐ φέρει) | ou pherei | ”does not bring/carry” | failing to bring/hold to a teaching | does not bring, does not hold to, does not teach | The traveling teacher does not carry/propagate the true apostolic teaching about Christ | New term: mboten mbekta — Low-Medium risk |
| λαμβάνω εἰς οἰκίαν | lambanein eis oikian | ”receive into the house” | formal hospitality practice of housing and supporting traveling teachers in the early church | receive into your house, welcome into your home, take in | Withdrawing material and social support (lodging, provisions) that would otherwise legitimize and enable a false teacher’s mission | New term: nampani wonten ing griya — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| χαίρειν (as greeting) | chairein | ”Rejoice!” / “Greetings!“ | the standard ancient letter/verbal greeting formula (lit. “rejoice”) | greeting, greetings, hail, welcome-greeting | Even the ordinary formal greeting extended to a guest is to be withheld, since it would function as public endorsement of the false teacher’s legitimacy | New term: pambagya/salam (withheld) — High risk: see doctrine note below |
Doctrine note — Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment: Hospitality toward guests (tamu) is one of the deepest values in Javanese social ethics — a guest is proverbially treated as a bearer of blessing (rejeki), and both refusing lodging and withholding a customary greeting (pambagya/salam) are serious breaches of unggah-ungguh (social propriety) that can be read as open insult or hostility in an honor-shame social framework. This verse’s instruction runs directly against that cultural default. Teaching material must state explicitly and repeatedly that this instruction is narrowly scoped to itinerant teachers actively promoting denial of Christ’s incarnation (the antichrist teaching of v.7, 9) — it is not a general principle for treating strangers, other faiths, or ordinary guests, and must never be taught as licensing rudeness or inhospitality as a general Christian posture. Flag: High, human theologian and native-speaker co-review required for any lesson material built on this verse.
2 John 1:11
English (ESV): “For whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κοινωνέω | koinōnei | ”shares, participates, takes part” | verb form of κοινωνία (fellowship/partnership); here negative — complicity | takes part in, shares in, participates in, becomes a partner in | Extending even minimal social legitimacy to a false teacher makes one morally complicit in that teacher’s wicked work | New term: dados rowang (“becomes a partner/accomplice”) — High risk: see doctrine note below |
| ἔργα πονηρά | erga ponēra | ”wicked/evil works” | morally evil deeds, specifically the deceiver’s doctrinal and social activity | evil deeds, wicked works, evil deeds | The false teacher’s active propagation of incarnation-denying doctrine, treated as morally culpable “work” | New term: pendamelan awon — Medium risk |
Doctrine note — κοινωνέω vs. patunggilan: The baseline already establishes patunggilan as the Low-risk, positive term for Christian fellowship (κοινωνία) — shared participation in Christ. Verse 11 uses the same root verbally, but in a starkly negative sense: partnership in evil, not partnership in Christ. Patunggilan should NOT be reused here. Doing so would risk teaching, by implication, that ordinary Christian fellowship itself is dangerous or that the positive doctrine of fellowship and this negative warning are the same concept. A distinct phrase (dados rowang ing pendamelan awon, “becomes a partner in wicked deeds”) preserves the wordplay’s warning force without contaminating the positive fellowship term used elsewhere in the curriculum. Flag: High.
2. Full-Book Coverage: Remainder of 2 John (vv.1–3, 12–13)
2 John 1:1–3
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | ”elder” | an older man; a church office-holder with apostolic-era authority | elder, presbyter, the elder | The author’s self-designation, carrying apostolic-level pastoral authority, not mere old age | New term: pinituwa — Medium risk: must be distinguished from a generic village elder/sesepuh honorific role; author writes with apostolic teaching authority |
| ἐκλεκτός (fem., of a person) | eklektē | ”chosen, elect” (adjective describing the addressee) | favored/chosen status of an individual or group | elect, chosen, dear | A term of honor for the addressee(s), distinct from the technical soteriological doctrine of election | New term: ingkang kapilih — Medium risk: must not be conflated with baseline’s pepilihanipun Gusti Allah (God’s sovereign salvific choice, High risk) |
| ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν | egnōkotes tēn alētheian | ”having known the truth” | settled, possessed knowledge (perfect tense) | who know the truth, those who have come to know the truth | The wider believing community that shares this knowledge of gospel truth — reinforces truth as a body of content, not private insight | Reuse kayektosan (see v.4) |
| μένουσαν ἐν ἡμῖν | menousan en hēmin | ”abiding/remaining in us” | ongoing indwelling presence | abides in us, remains in us, dwells in us | Truth as a permanent possession of the believing community, anticipating v.9’s “abide in the teaching” | Reuse tetep manggen/lestantun (see v.9) |
| εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα | eis ton aiōna | ”forever, into the age” | unending duration; the coming age | forever, for eternity | The permanence of gospel truth, contrasted with any teaching that might displace it | New term: ing salaminipun — Low risk |
| χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη | charis, eleos, eirēnē | ”grace, mercy, peace” | triad of blessings, expanded from Paul’s typical “grace and peace” | grace, mercy, and peace | A greeting-triad invoking the Father’s and Son’s shared blessing on the recipients | REUSE baseline: sih-rahmat (Critical) + REUSE baseline: katentreman (Medium) + New term: kawelasan (mercy) — Medium risk |
| θεοῦ πατρός | theou patros | ”God the Father” | God under his fatherly relational aspect | God the Father | Identifies the Father as one source of grace, mercy, and peace, alongside the Son | Reuse Gusti Allah (Critical) + Rama (High) |
| Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός | Iēsou Christou tou huiou tou patros | ”Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father” | full title affirming Christ’s unique divine sonship | Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son | Christ named as co-source of grace/mercy/peace alongside the Father, a strong implicit deity-of-Christ statement | Reuse Gusti Yesus (Critical) + Kristus + Putrané Gusti Allah pattern (Critical) |
| ἀγάπη (repeated) | agapē | ”love” | see v.6 | love | The sphere (“in truth and love”) in which the greeting-blessing operates — truth and love named together as this epistle’s twin themes | Reuse katresnan (Medium, see v.6) |
Doctrine note — Mercy (ἔλεος/kawelasan): New term required; must remain distinct from sih-rahmat (grace, Critical) so the triad’s three distinct blessings are not collapsed into one. Flag: Medium.
2 John 1:12–13
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Javanese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χάρτου καὶ μέλανος | chartou kai melanos | ”paper and ink” | writing materials | paper and ink | Practical/personal detail; no significant doctrinal content | New term: kertas lan mangsi — Low risk |
| στόμα πρὸς στόμα | stoma pros stoma | ”mouth to mouth” | idiom for direct, personal, face-to-face communication | face to face, in person, mouth to mouth | The elder’s preference for personal pastoral presence over written correspondence alone | New term (idiom, not literal): pethuk piyambak / adhep-adhepan — Low risk; literal “cangkem ngadhepi cangkem” must be avoided as unnatural/crude Javanese |
| χαρὰ πεπληρωμένη | chara peplērōmenē | ”joy having been fulfilled/made full” | complete, unmixed joy | our joy may be full, full/complete joy | Relational joy anticipated from face-to-face fellowship, echoing the epistle’s opening joy (v.4) | New term: kabungahan ingkang jangkep — Low risk |
| ἀδελφή (of a fellow believer) | adelphē | ”sister” | a female fellow-believer; possibly the literal sister of the addressee, or a sister congregation | sister, your sister | The closing greeting names another “elect” woman/congregation, paralleling the addressee of v.1 | New term: sedhèrèk èstri — Low risk |
| ἐκλεκτῆς (again, of the sister) | eklektēs | ”elect, chosen” | see v.1 note | elect, chosen | Reinforces the same address pattern used for the letter’s primary recipient | Reuse ingkang kapilih (Medium, see v.1) |
Verse-level note: No new Critical or High risk doctrinal terms appear in the closing; primarily social/relational vocabulary. This closes out full-book verse coverage for 2 John.
3. Cross-Reference to Baseline Romans Package
| 2 John concept | Baseline Romans term reused | Consistency requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Jesus Christ (vv.3, 7) | Gusti Yesus + Kristus | Exact reuse, Critical |
| God the Father (v.3, v.9) | Gusti Allah + Rama | Exact reuse, Critical/High |
| Son of the Father / has the Son (v.3, v.9) | Putrané Gusti Allah | Exact reuse, Critical |
| Coming in the flesh (v.7) | Gusti Allah dados manungsa (extended: Gusti Yesus Kristus ingkang rawuh dados manungsa) | Exact reuse of forbidden-substitution rule; never manunggaling kawula gusti |
| Grace, mercy, peace (v.3) | sih-rahmat (Critical), katentreman (Medium) | Exact reuse; kawelasan (mercy) is new, kept distinct |
| Fellowship root, negative use (v.11) | patunggilan (Low, positive sense only) | Must NOT reuse patunggilan for v.11’s negative κοινωνέω; new phrase required |
| Election/elect language, doctrinal sense | pepilihanipun Gusti Allah (High) | Reserved for the sovereign-choice doctrine; NOT used for the adjectival “elect lady/sister” address (v.1, v.13), which uses a separate new term |
| Messiah/Christ naming convention | Sang Mesias, Kristus | Antichrist (antikristus) is coined by analogy, transliterated to avoid Jayabaya/Satrio Piningit-style folk-prophetic collision |
