Executive Summary

Executive Summary — Ephesians Language Package (Javanese)

Why it matters

Ephesians extends the Romans-curriculum foundation into ecclesial and cosmic territory — union with Christ, the church as one new humanity, and spiritual warfare — that surfaces a different and in places more severe set of Javanese syncretism risks than Romans did. The core passage, Ephesians 2:1-10, compresses nearly every Critical-risk pattern in the letter (death, wrath, grace, resurrection-union, gift, works) into ten verses, and three doctrines unique to this letter — the Mystery of Christ, being Filled with the Spirit, and the Armor of God/spiritual powers — collide directly with live, currently-practiced Javanese traditions (guru-mediated esoteric knowledge, ritual trance-possession, and protective magical objects). Getting this Language Package right determines whether Ephesians teaches union with Christ or accidentally teaches Javanese mysticism in Christian dress.

Key findings

  • 135 total glossary terms now govern Phase 2 translation for Ephesians (36 inherited unchanged from the Romans baseline, 99 newly introduced by this letter), spanning all six chapters with no chapter contributing zero doctrinal load.
  • 71 of those 135 terms (53%) are Critical or High risk (24 Critical, 47 High), requiring mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence — a materially higher proportion of the glossary than Romans carried.
  • 24 of 30 full-book doctrines (80%) require mandatory human theologian review (10 Critical, 14 High); only 5 require native-speaker-only review and 1 qualifies for automated review alone.
  • The single highest-frequency Critical collision is μυστήριον/wewados (7 occurrences across chs. 1, 3, 5, 6), which risks being read through the guru-to-murid esoteric transmission model (ngèlmu/kebatinan) — the theological opposite of Paul’s point that the mystery is now openly proclaimed to all believers.
  • The single highest cultural-collision passage is Ephesians 6:12 (paired with 2:2 and 3:10) — the rulers/authorities/cosmic-powers language — which risks being absorbed into Java’s live, non-confrontational spirit-hierarchy (dhemit/lelembut/danyang), traditionally placated through sesajen and slametan rather than resisted.

Risks

  • Grace-as-debt collapse (Critical): Ephesians 2:8-9, the curriculum’s thesis verse, states salvation is “not of works, so no one may boast” — but Javanese utang budi (reciprocal gift-debt) social ethics make an unearned, no-strings gift culturally counter-intuitive without active, repeated fencing.
  • Trance-possession misreading (Critical): “Filled with the Spirit” (5:18) borders the living ritual-performance tradition of kesurupan/kerasukan (e.g., jathilan/kuda lumping), where personal agency is suspended — the exact opposite of the Spirit’s self-controlled empowerment Paul describes.
  • Magical-object misreading (Critical): The Armor of God (6:10-17) borders Java’s living tradition of keris pusaka, jimat, and azimat carrying inherent kasekten — every armor piece must be taught as grace-given spiritual reality, never a protective object with independent power.
  • Fatalism collapse (Critical/High): Predestination (1:5, 1:11) and God’s wrath (2:3, 5:6) both border impersonal Javanese cosmological concepts (pesthi/nrimo ing pandum fatalism; bebendu cosmic-disorder retribution) that would strip out God’s personal, moral character if left unguarded.
  • Salvation-as-ritual collapse (Critical, inherited and intensified): Kaslametan now recurs in two new compounds unique to Ephesians (Juru Kaslametan badanipun, 5:23; topong kaslametan, 6:17), doubling the surface area where the slametan ritual-meal collision can occur.

Opportunities

  • Positive cultural bridges identified and bounded: sowan (royal audience → access to the Father, 2:18/3:12), rukun (social harmony → karukunaken, reconciliation, 2:16), panjer (commercial deposit → the Spirit’s guarantee, 1:14), and brayat (household/family → household of God, 2:19) are genuinely helpful comprehension aids, each already paired in this package with an explicit boundary condition so the bridge does not become a leak.
  • Cross-curriculum consistency achieved: all 36 inherited terms (including every Critical baseline term — Gusti Allah, Gusti Yesus, Roh Suci, sih-rahmat, kaslametan) are carried into Ephesians unchanged, so learners moving from Romans to Ephesians encounter stable vocabulary rather than confusing re-translation.
  • Verbatim-consistency anchors established: Ephesians 2:8-9 and 4:4-6 are now designated fixed, cross-document-identical renderings (parallel to Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, 10:9-10), giving Phase 2 clear non-negotiable anchor texts.
  1. Route Ephesians 2:1-10 as a single reviewed unit, not term-by-term, in Phase 2 Step 17 — its argument depends on correct sequencing (death → wrath → grace/mercy/love → new life/gift → good works as fruit).
  2. Prioritize QA on the four highest-collision doctrines — Mystery of Christ Revealed, Filled with the Holy Spirit, Armor of God, and Spiritual Rulers/Authorities/Cosmic Powers — before general segment translation begins; these four alone account for a disproportionate share of the 24 Critical/High doctrines.
  3. Enforce the mandatory “revealed to all” qualifier on every occurrence of wewados and the mandatory slametan-distinguishing note on every occurrence of kaslametan and its compounds, per the validation checklist in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  4. Assign the same reviewer/theologian pairing to Ephesians 2:1-10, 4:4-6, and 6:10-20 across parallel Phase 2 batch processing, to preserve doctrinal-argument coherence across worker boundaries.
  5. Carry the 24-Critical/High-doctrine and 71-Critical/High-term counts forward into Phase 2 resourcing plans — this is a heavier theologian-review load than Romans required and should be staffed accordingly.
