Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — 1 Timothy | English → Malayalam
This glossary extends the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json for the 1 Timothy curriculum. It does not replace the baseline; it must be loaded alongside it. Terms already fixed in the baseline are listed in Section A and MUST be reused exactly as recorded there. New terms introduced by 1 Timothy are catalogued in full in Section B with the same risk framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low) used throughout this pipeline.

| glory | മഹത്വം | Medium | 1:11, 1:17, 3:16 | Underlies “taken up in glory” (3:16) |
| spiritual gifts | ആത്മീയവരങ്ങള് | Medium | 4:14 | ”the gift… through the laying on of hands of the presbytery” |

| fellowship (κοινωνία root) | കൂട്ടായ്മ | Low | 6:18 (κοινωνικός, “willing to share”) | Related noun, not identical form; see new term below |
| exhort (παρακαλέω) | പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക | Low | 1:3, 5:1 | Context-sensitive per baseline note |
| intercession (ἔντευξις) | മധ്യസ്ഥത | Medium | 2:1, 4:5 | Underlies new term “mediator” (μεσίτης, same root) — see Section B |
| apostle | അപ്പോസ്തലന് | Low | 1:1, 2:7 | — |
| messiah (Χριστός) | ക്രിസ്തു | Critical | throughout | See “Christ” above |
| justification-family (δικαιόω root) | നീതീകരണം / നീതി | Critical / High | 3:16 (“vindicated in the Spirit”) | Distinct Christological (vindication) sense at 3:16 vs. soteriological sense elsewhere — flag for disambiguation |
| holy (ἅγιος root) | പരിശുദ്ധ | Medium | (underlies ἁγνός distinction at 5:22; ἅγιος itself not directly used of persons in 1 Timothy but the root informs related terms) | Keep terminologically distinct from new term ἁγνός (“pure,” Section B) |
| providence | ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം | Medium | (background concept for 6:17’s “uncertain riches” contrast; not a direct citation) | Do not conflate with new term “God’s plan” (οἰκονομία, Section B) |
Section B — New Terms Introduced by 1 Timothy
| # | English term | Original (Greek) | Transliteration | Malayalam rendering | Risk | Category/Doctrine | Key passages | Notes / alternatives rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | sound doctrine | ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία | hygiainousa didaskalia | ആരോഗ്യകരമായ ഉപദേശം | High | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 1:10, 6:3 | Literal “healthy teaching” metaphor; keep the health-metaphor force, not a flat “correct teaching.” |
| 2 | doctrine/teaching | διδασκαλία | didaskalia | ഉപദേശം | Medium | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 1:10, 4:1, 4:6, 4:13, 4:16, 5:17, 6:1, 6:3 | Base noun underlying #1, #3, #43. |
| 3 | to teach a different doctrine | ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω | heterodidaskaleō | വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഉപദേശം പഠിപ്പിക്കുക | High | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 1:3, 6:3 | Must signal deviation from a fixed apostolic standard, not mere stylistic variety. |
| 4 | myths | μῦθος | mythos | കെട്ടുകഥകള് | Low | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 1:4, 4:7 | — |
| 5 | genealogies | γενεαλογία | genealogia | വംശാവലികള് | Low | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 1:4 | Shares root with baseline “seed of David” vamsham vocabulary. |
| 6 | God’s plan/stewardship | οἰκονομία θεοῦ | oikonomia theou | ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പദ്ധതി | Medium | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 1:4 | Do NOT conflate with baseline “providence” (ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം) — a distinct Greek word/concept. |
| 7 | love | ἀγάπη | agapē | സ്നേഹം | Low | General | 1:5, 2:15, 4:12, 6:11 | Established, safe, unambiguous across all traditions. |
| 8 | mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | കരുണ | Medium | Grace | 1:2, 1:13, 1:16 | Shares devotional-compassion register with Hindu/Buddhist ethical vocabulary; keep tied to Christ’s specific atoning work, not generalized sentiment. |
| 9 | hope | ἐλπίς | elpis | പ്രത്യാശ | Low | General | 1:1 | Established Christian term. |
| 10 | chief of sinners | πρῶτος τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν | prōtos tōn hamartōlōn | പാപികളില് മുമ്പന് | Medium | Grace | 1:15 | Composite with baseline “sin” (പാപം). |
| 11 | patience/longsuffering | μακροθυμία | makrothymia | ദീര്ഘക്ഷമ | Low | God’s Character | 1:16 | Established term. |
| 12 | immortal | ἄφθαρτος / ἀθάνατος | aphthartos / athanatos | അമര്ത്യന് | Medium | God’s Character | 1:17, 6:16 | Reused at 6:16 (“who alone has immortality” = അമര്ത്യത). |
| 13 | invisible | ἀόρατος | aoratos | അദൃശ്യന് | Medium | God’s Character | 1:17, 6:16 | — |
| 14 | the only God | μόνος θεός | monos theos | ഏകദൈവം | High | God’s Character / Monotheism | 1:17 | Exclusive monotheism claim must not be softened; flag for theologian review. |
| 15 | Savior | σωτήρ | sōtēr | രക്ഷകന് | High | Salvation | 1:1, 2:3, 4:10 | Derived from baseline രക്ഷ (High); NEVER any മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി-adjacent phrasing. |
| 16 | wage the good warfare | στρατεύω τὴν καλὴν στρατείαν | strateuō tēn kalēn strateian | നല്ല യുദ്ധം ചെയ്യുക | Medium | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | 1:18 | Keep consistent register with #57 (6:12, different Greek idiom, same theme). |
| 17 | petition | δέησις | deēsis | അപേക്ഷ | Low | Public Worship and Prayer | 2:1 | Related to baseline exhort note (അപേക്ഷിക്കുക). |
| 18 | prayer (general) | προσευχή | proseuchē | പ്രാര്ത്ഥന | Low | Public Worship and Prayer | 2:1 | — |
| 19 | for all people | ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων | hyper pantōn anthrōpōn | എല്ലാ മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും വേണ്ടി | High | Public Worship and Prayer / Universal Scope of Gospel | 2:1 | Per baseline universal_scope_of_gospel reasoning; retain full universality given internal Kerala caste-heritage sensitivity. |
| 20 | kings and those in high positions | βασιλεῖς καὶ οἱ ἐν ὑπεροχῇ | basileis kai hoi en hyperochē | രാജാക്കന്മാരും ഉന്നതസ്ഥാനത്തിലുള്ളവരും | Low | Public Worship and Prayer | 2:2 | — |
| 21 | a quiet and peaceable life | ἤρεμος καὶ ἡσύχιος βίος | ēremos kai hēsychios bios | ശാന്തവും സമാധാനപൂര്ണ്ണവുമായ ജീവിതം | Medium | Public Worship and Prayer | 2:2 | ശാന്തി has mild Hindu/Buddhist devotional resonance but functions safely as ordinary secular calm in Malayalam. |
| 22 | godliness | εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | ഭക്തി | High | Godliness and Contentment | 2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3, 6:5, 6:6, 6:11 | Grounded reason: established Malayalam Bible usage renders εὐσέβεια as ഭക്തി, unlike πίστις (for which ഭക്തി is correctly rejected in the baseline). This is a genuine, unavoidable collision with Kerala’s Hindu bhakti devotional tradition (devotion to a chosen deity via ritual/image worship/guru mediation). Every occurrence requires a translator note anchoring the term in reverent, doctrine-shaped conduct flowing from union with Christ, not devotional sentiment or ritual merit. Recurs 8x — the letter’s most frequent High-risk term. |
| 23 | one mediator | εἷς μεσίτης | heis mesitēs | ഏകമധ്യസ്ഥന് | Critical | Christ as the One Mediator | 2:5 | Grounded reason: shares root with baseline “intercession” (മധ്യസ്ഥത, Medium) but here asserts Christ’s exclusive mediatorship. Must be preserved without qualification, while translator notes distinguish this from the Catholic/Orthodox devotional practice of seeking intercession through Mary/saints (an internal denominational-emphasis matter per baseline, not a rival mediatorial office). Flag every occurrence for theologian review. |
| 24 | ransom for all | ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων | antilytron hyper pantōn | എല്ലാവര്ക്കും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള മറുവില | High | Christ as the One Mediator / Atonement | 2:6 | Must convey costly substitutionary payment, not generic sacrifice/gift. |
| 25 | herald | κῆρυξ | kēryx | പ്രഘോഷകന് | Medium | Mission | 2:7 | — |
| 26 | teacher | διδάσκαλος | didaskalos | ഉപദേഷ്ടാവ് | High | Qualifications for Church Leadership | 2:7, and underlying διδακτικός (3:2) | Grounded reason: extends baseline’s “apostle ≠ ഗുരു” logic to the broader “teacher” category, since 1 Timothy centers on the church’s teaching office. NEVER ഗുരു — guru-śiṣya devotional/authority structures differ fundamentally from apostolic-deposit-accountable teaching. |
| 27 | respectable clothing / modesty / self-control | καταστολή κόσμιος, αἰδώς, σωφροσύνη | katastolē kosmios, aidōs, sōphrosynē | മാന്യമായ വസ്ത്രധാരണം, സഭ്യത, സുബോധം | Medium | Public Worship and Prayer | 2:9 | Keep text’s own rationale (not wealth-display), avoid importing unrelated modesty codes. |
| 28 | quietness (women’s instruction) | ἡσυχία | hēsychia | മൌനം / നിശബ്ദത | High | Public Worship and Prayer / Church Leadership | 2:11-12 | Grounded reason: genuinely contested across complementarian/egalitarian traditions; flag every occurrence for theologian review; do not resolve the debate through word choice alone. |
| 29 | to have/exercise authority over | αὐθεντέω | authenteō | ആധിപത്യം സ്ഥാപിക്കുക | High | Church Leadership | 2:12 | Grounded reason: rare verb with disputed neutral (“exercise authority”) vs. negative (“domineer”) sense; record both in alternatives_considered; flag for theologian review. |
| 30 | saved through childbearing | σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας | sōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias | സന്താനോല്പാദനത്തിലൂടെ രക്ഷ പ്രാപിക്കും | High | Salvation | 2:15 | Grounded reason: imprecise rendering risks implying works/biology-based salvation for women, contradicting Critical-tier justification-by-faith doctrine. Requires explanatory translator note on the range of scholarly readings; flag for theologian review. |
| 31 | office of overseer / overseer | ἐπισκοπή / ἐπίσκοπος | episkopē / episkopos | അദ്ധ്യക്ഷത / അദ്ധ്യക്ഷന് | High | Qualifications for Church Leadership | 3:1-2 | Grounded reason: Kerala spans episcopal (Orthodox/Catholic, with an actual bishop/മെത്രാൻ office) and non-episcopal (Protestant/Pentecostal) polities; NEVER മെത്രാൻ for this generic functional term — it would import a specific hierarchical office not required by the Greek. Flag for theologian review whenever the office is being defined. |
| 32 | good work | καλὸν ἔργον | kalon ergon | നല്ല പ്രവൃത്തി | Low | Church Leadership | 3:1 | — |
| 33 | above reproach | ἀνεπίλημπτος | anepilēmptos | നിരപവാദ്യനായ | Medium | Church Leadership | 3:2 | — |
| 34 | husband of one wife | μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα | mias gynaikos andra | ഏകഭാര്യനായ ഭര്ത്താവ് | High | Church Leadership | 3:2, 3:12 | Grounded reason: genuine ambiguity (monogamy vs. never-remarried vs. marital fidelity) affects real eligibility questions across denominations; preserve the literal construction, do not silently resolve; flag for theologian review. |
| 36 | able to teach | διδακτικός | didaktikos | ഉപദേശിക്കാന് സമര്ത്ഥനായ | Medium | Church Leadership / Sound Doctrine | 3:2 | Anchors ഉപദേശം (doctrine) root; avoid ഗുരു-flavored phrasing (cf. #26). |
| 37 | not a drunkard / not violent / gentle / peaceable / not a lover of money | πάροινος, πλήκτης, ἐπιεικής, ἄμαχος, ἀφιλάργυρος | paroinos, plēktēs, epieikēs, amachos, aphilargyros | മദ്യപാനിയല്ലാത്ത, ഹിംസാത്മകനല്ലാത്ത, സൌമ്യതയുള്ള, കലഹിക്കാത്ത, ദ്രവ്യാഗ്രഹമില്ലാത്ത | Low-Medium | Church Leadership | 3:3 | ദ്രവ്യാഗ്രഹം (love of money) rated Medium; the rest Low. |
| 38 | manage household well | καλῶς προϊστάμενος + οἶκος | kalōs proistamenos, oikos | ഭവനത്തെ നല്ലവണ്ണം ഭരിക്കുക | Medium | Church Leadership | 3:4-5, 3:12, 5:17 | Must convey loving, responsible headship, not authoritarian rule; same verb spans household and church leadership. |
| 39 | children in submission | τέκνα ἐν ὑποταγῇ | tekna en hypotagē | കീഴടക്കമുള്ള മക്കള് | Medium | Church Leadership | 3:4 | Keep distinct from baseline’s soteriological “obedience of faith.” |
| 40 | dignity | σεμνότης | semnotēs | മാന്യത | Low | Church Leadership | 3:4, 3:8 | — |
| 41 | new convert | νεόφυτος | neophytos | പുതുവിശ്വാസി | Low | Church Leadership | 3:6 | — |
| 42 | puffed up with conceit | τυφόω | typhoō | അഹങ്കാരത്താല് നിറഞ്ഞ് | Low | Church Leadership | 3:6, 6:4 | Generic ethical “pride,” not the Vedantic philosophical ahaṅkāra. |
| 43 | the devil | διάβολος | diabolos | പിശാച് | Medium | Church Leadership / Spiritual Warfare | 3:6-7, 3:11 (adjectival) | Distinct from Malayalam folk-belief “ഭൂതം”; keep personal, singular, cosmic sense. |
| 44 | good testimony from outsiders | μαρτυρία καλή … ἔξωθεν | martyria kalē … exōthen | പുറത്തുള്ളവരില് നിന്നും നല്ല സാക്ഷ്യം | Medium | Church Leadership | 3:7 | Notable given Kerala’s socially visible church institutions. |
| 45 | deacon | διάκονος | diakonos | ശുശ്രൂഷകന് | High | Qualifications for Church Leadership | 3:8-13, 4:6 | Grounded reason: denominations differ sharply on the institutional shape of this office (Orthodox/Catholic minor clerical order vs. Protestant lay service role); term itself safe, but office concept varies widely. Flag for theologian/native-speaker review when qualifications (not function) are discussed. |
| 46 | double-tongued | δίλογος | dilogos | ഇരട്ട നാവുള്ള | Low | Church Leadership | 3:8 | Transparent literal calque. |
| 47 | greedy for dishonest gain | αἰσχροκερδής | aischrokerdēs | അഴിമതി ലാഭത്തിന് ആഗ്രഹമുള്ള | Medium | Church Leadership | 3:8 | — |
| 48 | mystery of the faith | μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως | mystērion tēs pisteōs | വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ മർമ്മം | High | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | 3:9 | Grounded reason: must remain an openly-proclaimed, once-hidden-now-revealed apostolic truth held in trust by the whole church, not drift toward an esoteric, initiation-restricted “secret knowledge” register familiar from Kerala’s broader religious vocabulary. |
| 49 | clear conscience | καθαρὰ συνείδησις | kathara syneidēsis | ശുദ്ധമായ മനസ്സാക്ഷി | Medium | General Ethics | 1:5, 1:19, 3:9 | മനസ്സാക്ഷി is established, low-ambiguity. |
| 50 | tested / blameless | δοκιμάζω / ἀνέγκλητος | dokimazō / anegklētos | പരിശോധിക്കുക / കുററമില്ലാത്ത | Low | Church Leadership | 3:10 | — |
| 51 | women/wives (deacons’ context) | γυναῖκας | gynaikas | സ്ത്രീകൾ / ഭാര്യമാർ | High | Church Leadership | 3:11 | Grounded reason: genuine lexical ambiguity in the Greek itself (deacons’ wives vs. women serving in a deacon-adjacent/deaconess role); whichever Malayalam word is chosen will be read as resolving a live, denomination-dividing debate. Preserve ambiguity with a translator’s note rather than silently resolving; flag every occurrence for theologian review. |
| 52 | not slanderers | μὴ διαβόλους | mē diabolous | അപവാദം പറയാത്ത | Low | Church Leadership | 3:11 | Adjectival use of διάβολος, distinct sense from #43; wordplay not recoverable in Malayalam. |
| 53 | good standing | βαθμὸς καλός | bathmos kalos | നല്ല സ്ഥാനം | Medium | Church Leadership | 3:13 | Must not be read through a prosperity/status-advancement lens. |
| 54 | boldness/confidence | παρρησία | parrēsia | ധൈര്യം | Low | Church Leadership | 3:13 | — |
| 55 | household of God | οἶκος θεοῦ | oikos theou | ദൈവഭവനം | Medium | The Church as Pillar of Truth | 3:15 | Distinct from, related to, baseline “church” (സഭ). |
| 56 | pillar and buttress of the truth | στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας | stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias | സത്യത്തിന്റെ തൂണും അടിസ്ഥാനവും | High | The Church as Pillar of Truth | 3:15 | Grounded reason: Catholic/Orthodox readers may hear this as elevating institutional/magisterial authority over Scripture; Protestant readers will insist the church only guards, not generates, truth. Translator notes must clarify the church displays/upholds a truth it did not originate, without appearing to diminish any tradition’s ecclesiology. Flag for theologian review. |
| 57 | mystery of godliness | τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον | to tēs eusebeias mystērion | ഭക്തിയുടെ മർമ്മം | High | Godliness and Contentment / Deity of Christ | 3:16 | Compounds risks of #22 (godliness) and #48 (mystery); translator notes essential. |
| 58 | manifested in the flesh | ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί | ephanerōthē en sarki | ജഡത്തില് പ്രത്യക്ഷനായി | Critical | Incarnation | 3:16 | Direct restatement of baseline Critical Incarnation doctrine; NEVER അവതാരം-flavored phrasing implying a repeatable/temporary divine appearance. |
| 59 | vindicated in the Spirit | ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι | edikaiōthē en pneumati | ആത്മാവില് നീതീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു | Critical | Deity of Christ / Resurrection | 3:16 | Grounded reason: shares root with baseline “justification” (നീതീകരണം); must be distinguished from the believer’s soteriological justification — this is Christ’s unique vindication, not a sinner’s forensic declaration. Requires explicit translator note whenever both senses appear together. |
| 60 | taken up in glory | ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ | anelēmphthē en doxē | മഹത്വത്തില് എടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു | High | Ascension | 3:16 | Summarizes the full ascension/exaltation within a tightly-packed creedal line; imprecision risks flattening a full doctrinal claim into vague metaphor. |
| 61 | depart from the faith | ἀφίστημι τῆς πίστεως | aphistēmi tēs pisteōs | വിശ്വാസത്തില് നിന്ന് വീണുപോകുക | Medium | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | 4:1 | — |
| 62 | deceitful spirits | πνεύματα πλάνα | pneumata plana | വഞ്ചകമായ ആത്മാക്കള് | Medium | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 4:1 | Plural, malevolent, created-spirit sense; distinct from philosophical ātman/paramātman (already forbidden for Holy Spirit in baseline). |
| 63 | teachings of demons | διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων | didaskaliai daimoniōn | ഭൂതങ്ങളുടെ ഉപദേശങ്ങള് | Medium | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 4:1 | ഭൂതം is an established shared cultural category; note these are spiritually real forces behind specific named errors, not generic folklore. |
| 64 | forbidding marriage / abstaining from foods | κωλύοντες γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων | kōlyontes gamein, apechesthai brōmatōn | വിവാഹം വിരോധിക്കുക, ഭക്ഷണങ്ങളില് നിന്ന് വിട്ടുനില്ക്കുക | Medium | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 4:3 | Distinguish mandatory prohibition (the error) from voluntary celibacy/fasting (not the error). |
| 65 | creation/created thing | κτίσμα | ktisma | സൃഷ്ടി | Medium | Godliness and Contentment | 4:4 | Established, unavoidable term; also the technical name of one phase of the Hindu cosmological cycle (srishti-sthiti-samhara) — keep the one-time, personal-Creator sense clear. |
| 66 | train yourself for godliness | γυμνάζω πρὸς εὐσέβειαν | gymnazō pros eusebeian | ഭക്തിക്കായി അഭ്യാസം ചെയ്യുക | Medium | Godliness and Contentment | 4:7-8 | Keep as grace-empowered discipline, not merit-earning ascetic sādhana. |
| 67 | example to the believers | τύπος τῶν πιστῶν | typos tōn pistōn | മാതൃക | Low | Church Leadership | 4:12 | — |
| 68 | laying on of hands / presbytery | ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν / πρεσβυτέριον | epithesis tōn cheirōn / presbyterion | കൈവെക്കൽ / മൂപ്പന്മാരുടെ സഭ | Medium | Qualifications for Church Leadership | 4:14 | Ordination practice safely established across traditions; the corporate “council of elders” institutional shape varies by polity. |
| 69 | elder (age sense vs. office sense) | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | മൂപ്പന്/മൂപ്പത്തി (age); മൂപ്പന് (office) | High (office sense) / Low (age sense) | Church Leadership / Care for Widows | 5:1-2, 5:17, 5:19 | Same Greek word, two distinct senses; disambiguate explicitly by context in every occurrence. |
| 70 | widow / widow indeed | χήρα / ὄντως χήρα | chēra / ontōs chēra | വിധവ / സാക്ഷാൽ വിധവ | Medium | Care for Widows and the Household of Faith | ch. 5 throughout | ”Widow indeed” is a specific, church-recognized dependent category, not merely any bereaved woman. |
| 71 | repay their parents | ἀμοιβὰς ἀποδιδόναι τοῖς προγόνοις | amoibas apodidonai tois progonois | മുതിര്ന്നവരോട് പ്രത്യുപകാരം ചെയ്യുക | Low | Care for Widows | 5:4 | No ancestor-veneration collision in Malayalam Christian culture. |
| 72 | unbeliever | ἄπιστος | apistos | അവിശ്വാസി | Low | General | 5:8 | Negation of baseline വിശ്വാസം. |
| 73 | double honor | διπλῆ τιμή | diplē timē | ഇരട്ടി മാനം | Medium | Care for Widows / Church Leadership | 5:17 | Not entitlement to wealth; appropriate honor plus material sustenance. |
| 74 | witness(es) | μάρτυς | martys | സാക്ഷി | Low | Church Leadership / Discipline | 5:19 | Ordinary legal/testimonial term; safe. |
| 75 | partiality | πρόσκλισις / πρόκριμα | prosklisis / prokrima | പക്ഷഭേദം | High | Church Leadership / Universal Human Accountability | 5:21 | Grounded reason: directly bears on the baseline-documented risk of caste-heritage-linked partiality within Kerala’s own Christian community; imprecise rendering could permit exactly the favoritism the baseline flags. Flag for theologian review. |
| 76 | pure | ἁγνός | hagnos | നിര്മ്മലനായി | Medium | Church Leadership | 5:22 | Distinct Greek word from ἅγιος (baseline “holy,” പരിശുദ്ധ) — keep terminologically separate. |
| 77 | slaves, masters | δοῦλος, δεσπότης | doulos, despotēs | ദാസന്, യജമാനന് | Medium | Social Ethics | 6:1-2 | ദാസൻ carries positive dāsya-bhakti resonance (servant-devotion to a deity) which can illuminate “servant of Christ” language elsewhere but must not obscure the literal socio-economic relationship here. |
| 78 | godliness as a means of gain | πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν | porismon einai tēn eusebeian | ഭക്തി സമ്പാദ്യമാര്ഗ്ഗമായി കരുതുക | High | Godliness and Contentment | 6:5 | Grounded reason: directly and explicitly applicable warning against prosperity-oriented distortion of piety, a live concern in some Kerala Pentecostal/charismatic circles. Flag for theologian review. |
| 79 | godliness with contentment is great gain | εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας πορισμὸς μέγας | eusebeia meta autarkeias porismos megas | ഭക്തിയും സംതൃപ്തിയും വലിയ ലാഭം | High | Godliness and Contentment | 6:6 | Must retain wordplay/contrast with #78 using the same Malayalam word for “gain” (ലാഭം) in both verses. |
| 80 | contentment | αὐτάρκεια | autarkeia | സംതൃപ്തി | Medium | Godliness and Contentment | 6:6, 6:8 | Some resonance with yogic/ascetic “santosha” (non-craving); Christian sense is relational trust in a providing God, not self-achieved dispassion. |
| 81 | love of money is a root of all evils | ῥίζα πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἡ φιλαργυρία | rhiza pantōn tōn kakōn hē philargyria | ധനമോഹമാണ് സകല തിന്മകളുടെയും വേര് | Medium | Godliness and Contentment | 6:10 | — |
| 82 | endurance/steadfastness | ὑπομονή | hypomonē | സഹിഷ്ണുത / സ്ഥിരത | Low | Christian Character | 6:11 | — |
| 83 | fight the good fight of the faith | ἀγωνίζου τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα τῆς πίστεως | agōnizou ton kalon agōna tēs pisteōs | വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ നല്ല പോരാട്ടം പോരാടുക | Medium | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | 6:12 | Keep consistent with #16 (1:18, different Greek idiom, same theme). |
| 84 | eternal life | αἰώνιος ζωή | aiōnios zōē | നിത്യജീവന് | High | Salvation | 6:12, 6:19 | Grounded reason: same class of risk as baseline “salvation” (രക്ഷ) — proximity to broader Malayalam corpus vocabulary for liberation from rebirth (മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി). NEVER any moksha/mukti-adjacent phrasing; established Malayalam Christian usage (നിത്യജീവന്, “everlasting life,” ongoing conscious fellowship with God) must be maintained. |
| 85 | the good confession | ἡ καλὴ ὁμολογία | hē kalē homologia | നല്ല സ്വീകാരം / ഏറ്റുപറച്ചില് | High | Guarding the Deposit of Faith / Lordship of Christ | 6:12-13 | Grounded reason: belongs to the same theological family as the baseline’s Critical Romans 10:9 confession (“Jesus is Lord” = യേശു കര്ത്താവാകുന്നു); must be rendered with equal seriousness and vocabulary consistency wherever the two texts are taught together. |
| 86 | the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ | ἐπιφάνεια τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | epiphaneia tou kyriou hēmōn Iēsou Christou | നമ്മുടെ കര്ത്താവായ യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പ്രത്യക്ഷത | Critical | Lordship of Christ / Eschatology | 6:14 | Critical by composition: combines three baseline Critical terms (കര്ത്താവ്, യേശു, ക്രിസ്തു) with the new noun “appearing.” |
| 87 | King of kings and Lord of lords | βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων | basileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn | രാജാധിരാജാവും കര്ത്താധികര്ത്താവും | Critical | Lordship of Christ | 6:15 | Direct extension of baseline Critical lordship_of_christ doctrine into superlative, cosmic-sovereignty register; must convey absolute singular supremacy. |
| 88 | the only Sovereign / immortality / unapproachable light | μόνος δυνάστης, ἀθανασία, φῶς ἀπρόσιτον | monos dynastēs, athanasia, phōs aprositon | പരമാധികാരി, അമര്ത്യത, അടുക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത പ്രകാശം | Medium | God’s Character | 6:15-16 | Light-metaphor phrase carries the same caution as baseline δόξα note — avoid conflation with unrelated divine-radiance/tejas imagery. |
| 89 | dominion | κράτος | kratos | ആധിപത്യം | Medium | God’s Character | 6:16 | Distinct Greek word from baseline δύναμις (ശക്തി); keep lexically separate. |
| 90 | guard the deposit | παραθήκη + φυλάσσω | parathēkē, phylassō | സൂക്ഷിപ്പ് കാത്തുകൊള്ളുക | High | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | 6:20 | Grounded reason: the letter’s climactic charge and the direct textual source of a named curriculum doctrine; must convey a fixed, valuable, entrusted treasure faithfully preserved and transmitted unaltered, not a personal possession or a freely paraphrasable “message.” Flag for theologian review. |
| 91 | irreverent, empty chatter | βέβηλοι κενοφωνίαι | bebēloi kenophōniai | അശുദ്ധമായ വ്യര്ത്ഥ സംസാരം | Low | Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 6:20 | — |
| 92 | knowledge falsely called | γνῶσις ψευδώνυμος | gnōsis pseudōnymos | വ്യാജമായി വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ജ്ഞാനം | High | Guarding the Deposit of Faith / Sound Doctrine vs. False Teaching | 6:20 | Grounded reason: ജ്ഞാനം (jñāna) is a philosophically load-bearing term in Kerala’s dominant Hindu traditions, denoting the “path of knowledge” toward liberating realization of ātman-Brahman identity — one of classical Hinduism’s most developed soteriological categories. The qualifier “falsely called” must clearly signal a condemned rival knowledge-claim, not an affirmed alternative path parallel to faith in Christ. Flag for theologian review. |
Risk Summary for 1 Timothy New Terms
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 4 | Human theologian (terms #58, #59, #86, #87) |
| High | 20 | Human theologian |
| Medium | 38 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 30 | Automated review |
Notable pattern distinct from Romans: unlike Romans, where the highest risks cluster around Christology and soteriology vocabulary already settled by nearly two millennia of Malayalam Christian usage, 1 Timothy’s highest new risks cluster around church office and practice (ἐπίσκοπος, διάκονος, πρεσβύτερος, ἡσυχία/αὐθεντέω, γυναῖκας at 3:11) and around godliness/gnosis vocabulary that directly overlaps established Hindu philosophical and devotional categories (εὐσέβεια = ഭക്തി; γνῶσις = ജ്ഞാനം). These are two new risk classes not prominent in the Romans baseline and should receive proportionate theologian review capacity in Phase 2 planning.
This glossary must be loaded alongside translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, and 12_ai_translation_requirements.md from the Romans baseline package before Phase 2 work begins. A future step should produce a 1 Timothy-specific extension of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md incorporating the forbidden-substitution and escalation rules implied by this glossary (notably: never ഗുരു for teacher/apostle; never മെത്രാൻ for the generic ἐπίσκοπος qualification-list sense; never മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി-adjacent phrasing for “eternal life”; flag all ἡσυχία/αὐθεντέω/γυναῖκας-3:11 occurrences for theologian review without silent resolution).
Critical Risk Terms

Messiah

Inherited from Romans package. ‘Christ Jesus’ is 1 Timothy’s dominant form throughout the letter. ക്രിസ്തു required for doctrinal register.
Lord
Approved rendering: കര്ത്താവ്
Transliteration: karthavu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:2, 1:12, 1:14, 6:3, 6:14-15. Underlies ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’ (6:15) and ‘the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ’ (6:14).
Justification
Approved rendering: നീതീകരണം
Transliteration: neetheekaranam
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ക്ഷമ ലഭിക്കല്
Original: δικαιόω / δικαίωσις (root)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 3:16 uses the same root (‘vindicated/justified in the Spirit’) in a distinct Christological sense (Christ’s resurrection-vindication), not the believer’s forensic justification — see new term vindicated_in_the_spirit; a translator note distinguishing the two senses is required wherever both appear.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്
Transliteration: parishudhathmavu
Doctrine: Sanctification / God
Rejected alternatives: ബ്രഹ്മം, പരമാത്മാവ്
Original: πνεῦμα (ἅγιον)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 4:1: ‘the Spirit expressly says.’ Keep lexically distinct from the new term ‘deceitful spirits’ (πνεύματα πλάνα, plural, malevolent, created beings) in the same verse. NEVER ബ്രഹ്മം or പരമാത്മാവ്.
Father
Approved rendering: പിതാവ്
Transliteration: pithavu

Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:2: ‘God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.‘
Incarnation
Approved rendering: മാംസധാരണം
Transliteration: mamsadharanam
Doctrine: Deity of Christ and the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: അവതാരം
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 3:16’s ‘manifested in the flesh’ (new term manifested_in_the_flesh) directly restates this doctrine and must be read alongside, never substituted for, this fixed term. NEVER അവതാരം.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ്
Transliteration: uyirthezhunnelppu
Doctrine: Deity of Christ and the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: പുനര്ജന്മം
Inherited from Romans package. Implicit background to 3:16’s ‘vindicated in the Spirit’ (Christ’s resurrection-vindication). NEVER പുനര്ജന്മം.
One Mediator
Approved rendering: ഏകമധ്യസ്ഥന്
Transliteration: ekamadhyasthan
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Original: εἷς μεσίτης
Category: Christ as the One Mediator
εἷς μεσίτης, 2:5. Shares root with baseline intercession (മധ്യസ്ഥത, Medium) but asserts Christ’s exclusive, singular mediatorship. Preserve without qualification; translator notes must frame Marian/saints intercession as fellow-believer prayer, never a rival mediatorial office. Flag every occurrence for theologian review.
Manifested In The Flesh
Approved rendering: ജഡത്തില് പ്രത്യക്ഷനായി
Transliteration: jadathil pratyakshanayi
Doctrine: Deity of Christ and the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: അവതാരം-flavored phrasing
Original: ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί
Category: Incarnation
ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί, 3:16. Direct restatement of the baseline Critical Incarnation doctrine (മാംസധാരണം); read alongside, never substitute for, that fixed term. NEVER അവതാരം-flavored language implying a repeatable, temporary divine appearance.
Vindicated In The Spirit
Approved rendering: ആത്മാവില് നീതീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു
Transliteration: athmavil neetheekarikkappettu
Doctrine: Deity of Christ and the Incarnation
Original: ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι
Category: Deity of Christ
ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι, 3:16. Shares root with baseline justification (നീതീകരണം); this is Christ’s unique resurrection-vindication, not the believer’s soteriological justification. Requires explicit translator note whenever both senses appear in the same teaching unit.
Appearing Of Lord
Approved rendering: നമ്മുടെ കര്ത്താവായ യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പ്രത്യക്ഷത
Transliteration: namude karthavaya yeshukristuvinte pratyakshatha
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ἐπιφάνεια τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Lordship of Christ
ἐπιφάνεια τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, 6:14. Critical by composition: combines three baseline Critical terms (കര്ത്താവ്, യേശു, ക്രിസ്തു) with the new eschatological noun ‘appearing.‘
King Of Kings Lord Of Lords
Approved rendering: രാജാധിരാജാവും കര്ത്താധികര്ത്താവും
Transliteration: rajadhirajavum karthadhikarthavum
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων
Category: Lordship of Christ
βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων, 6:15. Direct extension of the baseline’s Critical lordship_of_christ doctrine into superlative, cosmic-sovereignty register; must convey absolute singular supremacy, never ‘a great king among kings,’ and must not be heard as devotional hyperbole common to any beloved deity.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: കൃപ
Transliteration: krupa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: പുണ്യം
Original: χάρις
Category: Grace
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:2 (greeting), 1:14 (Paul’s testimony). Keep the source of grace explicitly Christ’s unmerited gift to a self-described ‘chief of sinners,’ not bhakti-devotional merit.
Salvation
Approved rendering: രക്ഷ
Transliteration: raksha
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: മോക്ഷം, മുക്തി
Original: σωτηρία / σωτήρ (root)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies the new term ‘Savior’ (രക്ഷകന്) applied to both the Father and the Son in 1 Timothy. NEVER മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: ജനതകള്
Transliteration: janathakal
Doctrine: Mission
Rejected alternatives: ജാതികള്
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 2:7: ‘teacher of the Gentiles/nations.’ NEVER ജാതികള് (reads as ‘castes’).
Righteousness
Approved rendering: നീതി
Transliteration: neethi
Doctrine: Christian Character and Perseverance
Rejected alternatives: ധര്മ്മം
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 6:11: ‘pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love…’ NEVER ധര്മ്മം.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: ആരോഗ്യകരമായ ഉപദേശം
Transliteration: arogyakaramaya upadesham
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Rejected alternatives: ശരിയായ ഉപദേശം
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία
Category: Sound Doctrine
1 Timothy 1:10, 6:3. Greek is a health metaphor (‘healthy teaching’); must preserve this organic force, not flatten to bare ‘correct teaching.‘
Teach Different Doctrine
Approved rendering: വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഉപദേശം പഠിപ്പിക്കുക
Transliteration: vyathyasthamaya upadesham padippikkuka
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Original: ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω
Category: Sound Doctrine
ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω, 1:3, 6:3. Must signal deviation from a fixed apostolic standard, not ordinary inter-denominational stylistic variety — a real risk in Kerala’s multi-denominational landscape.
Only God
Approved rendering: ഏകദൈവം
Transliteration: ekadaivam
Doctrine: God’s Unique, Transcendent Character
Original: μόνος θεός
Category: God
μόνος θεός, 1:17. Exclusive claim must not soften into ‘a supreme God among others’ — significant given Kerala’s religiously plural context with many venerated deities. Flag for theologian review whenever this doxology or its 6:15-16 equivalent recurs.
Savior
Approved rendering: രക്ഷകന്
Transliteration: rakshakan
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി-adjacent phrasing
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation
σωτήρ, 1:1, 2:3, 4:10 (‘Savior of all people, especially of believers’). Derived from baseline രക്ഷ. NEVER any മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി-adjacent phrasing for this cognate noun.
For All People
Approved rendering: എല്ലാ മനുഷ്യര്ക്കും വേണ്ടി
Transliteration: ella manushyarkkum vendi
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability and Impartiality
Original: ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων
Category: Public Worship and Prayer
ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων, 2:1. Retain full universality without softening, given Kerala’s internal Syrian-Christian/Dalit-convert stratification history.
Godliness
Approved rendering: ഭക്തി
Transliteration: bhakti
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Godliness and Contentment
εὐσέβεια, recurring 8x (2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3, 6:5, 6:6, 6:11). Established Malayalam Bible usage; genuinely and unavoidably occupies the same semantic space as Kerala’s Hindu bhakti devotional tradition. Every occurrence requires a translator note anchoring the term in reverent, Christ-centered conduct, not devotional sentiment, ritual merit, or prosperity-seeking piety. Flag every occurrence for theologian review.
Ransom For All
Approved rendering: എല്ലാവര്ക്കും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള മറുവില
Transliteration: ellavarkkum vendiyulla maruvila
Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator
Original: ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων
Category: Christ as the One Mediator
ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων, 2:6. Must convey a costly, substitutionary payment securing release, not a generic ‘gift’ or ‘sacrifice.‘
Teacher
Approved rendering: ഉപദേഷ്ടാവ്
Transliteration: upadeshtavu
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Rejected alternatives: ഗുരു
Original: διδάσκαλος
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
διδάσκαλος, 2:7 (‘teacher of the Gentiles’); underlies διδακτικός at 3:2. NEVER ഗുരു — guru-śiṣya devotional/authority structures differ fundamentally from an apostolic-deposit-accountable teaching office.
Quietness
Approved rendering: മൌനം / നിശബ്ദത
Transliteration: maunam / nishabdatha
Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer
Original: ἡσυχία
Category: Public Worship and Prayer
ἡσυχία, 2:11-12. Genuinely contested across complementarian/egalitarian Malayalam traditions; the same Greek word recurs at 2:2 in a civic-calm sense. Additionally risks resonance with the Hindu/yogic ascetic practice of mauna vrata (vow of ritual silence) — a translator note must clarify this denotes conduct/demeanor in the assembly, not a spiritual silence-discipline, in addition to addressing the interpretive dispute. Flag every occurrence for theologian review; do not resolve the debate through word choice.
Exercise Authority
Approved rendering: ആധിപത്യം സ്ഥാപിക്കുക
Transliteration: adhipathyam sthapikkuka
Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer
Original: αὐθεντέω
Category: Public Worship and Prayer
αὐθεντέω, 2:12. Rare, disputed verb (neutral ‘have authority’ vs. negative ‘domineer’). Record both possible senses in the segment cache as alternatives_considered; flag for theologian review; never silently resolve.
Saved Through Childbearing
Approved rendering: സന്താനോല്പാദനത്തിലൂടെ രക്ഷ പ്രാപിക്കും
Transliteration: santhanolpadanathiloode raksha praapikkum
Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer
Original: σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας
Category: Salvation
σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας, 2:15. Debated clause (vocational affirmation / Christological allusion / safekeeping through childbirth’s ordeal). An imprecise rendering risks implying works/biology-based salvation for women, contradicting the Critical-tier justification-by-faith doctrine. Requires an explanatory translator note on the range of readings; flag for theologian review.
Office Of Overseer
Approved rendering: അദ്ധ്യക്ഷത / അദ്ധ്യക്ഷന്
Transliteration: adhyakshatha / adhyakshan
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Rejected alternatives: മെത്രാൻ
Original: ἐπισκοπή / ἐπίσκοπος
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
ἐπισκοπή/ἐπίσκοπος, 3:1-2. NEVER മെത്രാൻ — Kerala spans episcopal (Orthodox/Catholic, with an actual bishop office) and non-episcopal (Protestant/Pentecostal) polities; a diocesan-bishop rendering would import a specific hierarchical structure the Greek does not require. Flag for theologian review whenever the office is being defined.
Husband Of One Wife
Approved rendering: ഏകഭാര്യനായ ഭര്ത്താവ്
Transliteration: ekabharyanaya bharthavu
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα / ἄνδρες
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα/ἄνδρες, 3:2, 3:12. Genuine three-way ambiguity (monogamy / never remarried / marital fidelity) affects real leadership-eligibility decisions across denominations. Preserve the literal ‘one-wife man’ construction; do not resolve silently. Flag for theologian review; identical rendering at both occurrences.
Deacon
Approved rendering: ശുശ്രൂഷകന്
Transliteration: shushrooshakan
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Rejected alternatives: ഡീക്കൻ (loanword, Catholic minor-order/transitional-diaconate sense)
Original: διάκονος
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
διάκονος, 3:8-13, 4:6. Denominations differ sharply on the office’s institutional shape (Orthodox/Catholic minor clerical order vs. Protestant lay service role); the word itself is safe but never substitute the loanword ഡീക്കൻ, which imports a narrower Catholic concept. Flag for theologian/native-speaker review when qualifications are discussed.
Mystery Of The Faith
Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ മർമ്മം
Transliteration: vishwasathinte marmam
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως
Category: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως, 3:9. Must remain openly-proclaimed apostolic truth held in trust by the whole church, not drift toward an esoteric, initiation-restricted ‘secret knowledge’ register familiar from Kerala’s Tantric/bhakti vocabulary.
Women Wives 3 11
Approved rendering: സ്ത്രീകൾ / ഭാര്യമാർ
Transliteration: sthreekal / bharyamar
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: γυναῖκας
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
γυναῖκας, 3:11. Genuine lexical ambiguity in the Greek itself (deacons’ wives vs. women in a deacon-adjacent/deaconess role). Preserve ambiguity with a translator’s note flagging both readings rather than silently resolving. Flag every occurrence for theologian review.
Pillar And Buttress Of Truth
Approved rendering: സത്യത്തിന്റെ തൂണും അടിസ്ഥാനവും
Transliteration: sathyathinte thoonum adisthanavum
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth
Original: στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: The Church as Pillar of Truth
στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας, 3:15. Catholic/Orthodox readers may hear institutional/magisterial elevation; Protestant readers will insist the church only upholds a truth it did not originate. Translator note must clarify the church displays/guards truth without diminishing any tradition’s ecclesiology. Flag for theologian review.
Mystery Of Godliness
Approved rendering: ഭക്തിയുടെ മർമ്മം
Transliteration: bhakthiyude marmam
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον
Category: Godliness and Contentment
τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον, 3:16. Compounds the risk of godliness (ഭക്തി) with mystery (esoteric-knowledge collision); translator notes essential at every occurrence.
Taken Up In Glory
Approved rendering: മഹത്വത്തില് എടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു
Transliteration: mahatvathil edukkappettu
Doctrine: Deity of Christ and the Incarnation
Original: ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ
Category: Ascension of Christ
ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ, 3:16. Summarizes the full ascension/exaltation within a tightly-packed creedal line; imprecision risks flattening a full doctrinal affirmation into vague metaphor.
Elder Office Sense
Approved rendering: മൂപ്പന്
Transliteration: moopan
Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership
Original: πρεσβύτερος (office sense)
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
πρεσβύτερος (office sense), 5:17, 5:19. Same reasoning as ἐπίσκοπος/διάκονος: denominational polity differences shape how readers understand this office. Flag for theologian review wherever the office (not mere age) is in view.
Partiality
Approved rendering: പക്ഷഭേദം
Transliteration: pakshabhedam
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability and Impartiality
Original: πρόσκλισις / πρόκριμα
Category: Qualifications for Church Leadership
πρόσκλισις/πρόκριμα, 5:21. Bears directly on Kerala’s own documented internal caste-heritage stratification (historic Syrian-Christian vs. Dalit-convert communities). An imprecise or softened rendering could inadvertently permit exactly this favoritism. Flag for theologian review.
Godliness As Means Of Gain
Approved rendering: ഭക്തി സമ്പാദ്യമാര്ഗ്ഗമായി കരുതുക
Transliteration: bhakthi sampadyamargamayi karuthuka
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν
Category: Godliness and Contentment
πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν, 6:5. Directly critiques a prosperity-oriented distortion of godliness — a live concern given prosperity-gospel teaching in some Kerala Pentecostal/charismatic circles. Flag for theologian review.
Godliness With Contentment
Approved rendering: ഭക്തിയും സംതൃപ്തിയും വലിയ ലാഭം
Transliteration: bhakthiyum santhripthiyum valiya labham
Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment
Original: εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας πορισμὸς μέγας
Category: Godliness and Contentment
εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας πορισμὸς μέγας, 6:6. Must retain the deliberate wordplay/contrast with the false ‘gain’ of 6:5 — use the same Malayalam word for ‘gain’ (ലാഭം) in both verses.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: നിത്യജീവന്
Transliteration: nithyajeevan
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: മോക്ഷം, മുക്തി
Original: αἰώνιος ζωή
Category: Salvation
αἰώνιος ζωή, 6:12, 6:19. Same class of risk as baseline salvation (രക്ഷ); proximity to broader Malayalam corpus vocabulary for liberation from rebirth. NEVER moksha/mukti-adjacent phrasing; established usage (നിത്യജീവന്, ongoing conscious fellowship with God) must be maintained.
Good Confession
Approved rendering: നല്ല സ്വീകാരം / ഏറ്റുപറച്ചില്
Transliteration: nalla sveekaram / etturaparachil
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: ἡ καλὴ ὁμολογία
Category: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
ἡ καλὴ ὁμολογία, 6:12-13. Belongs to the same theological family as the baseline’s Critical Romans 10:9 confession (‘Jesus is Lord’ = യേശു കര്ത്താവാകുന്നു); render with equal seriousness wherever both texts are taught together.
Guard The Deposit
Approved rendering: സൂക്ഷിപ്പ് കാത്തുകൊള്ളുക
Transliteration: sookshippu kathukolluka
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον
Category: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον, 6:20. The letter’s climactic charge and the direct textual source of this named curriculum doctrine; must convey a fixed, valuable, entrusted treasure faithfully preserved and transmitted unaltered, not a personal possession or freely paraphrasable ‘message.’ Flag for theologian review.
Knowledge Falsely Called
Approved rendering: വ്യാജമായി വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ജ്ഞാനം
Transliteration: vyajamayi vilikkappeduna jnanam
Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Original: γνῶσις ψευδώνυμος
Category: Guarding the Deposit of Faith
γνῶσις ψευδώνυμος, 6:20. ജ്ഞാനം (jñāna) is a philosophically load-bearing term in Kerala’s dominant Hindu traditions (jñāna-mārga toward ātman-Brahman realization). The qualifier ‘falsely called’ must clearly signal a condemned rival knowledge-claim, not an affirmed alternative path parallel to faith in Christ. Flag for theologian review — the letter’s most philosophically loaded lexical collision.
Medium Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ദൈവം
Transliteration: daivam
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / God’s Character
Rejected alternatives: ഭഗവാന്
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:1-2, 1:17, 2:3, 2:5, 3:15-16, 4:10, 6:13-17. Underlies new compounds ‘God our Savior,’ ‘the only God,’ ‘church of the living God.‘
Faith
Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസം
Transliteration: vishwasam
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ഭക്തി
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy uses this both for personal trust (1:2, 1:14, 2:15, 3:13) and the objective apostolic deposit (‘the faith,’ 1:19, 3:9, 4:1, 6:10, 6:21) — context must clarify which sense is active. NEVER ഭക്തി.
Church
Approved rendering: സഭ
Transliteration: sabha
Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth
Rejected alternatives: അമ്പലം
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 3:5, 3:15, 5:16. Underlies new compounds ‘church of God,’ ‘church of the living God,’ ‘household of God.‘

Approved rendering: ന്യായപ്രമാണം
Transliteration: nyayapramanam
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Rejected alternatives: ധര്മ്മം
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Timothy 1:7-9: the false teachers’ misuse of the law for speculative controversy rather than its proper moral use.
Sin
Approved rendering: പാപം
Transliteration: papam
Doctrine: Grace / Church Discipline
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτωλός
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies ‘chief of sinners’ (1:15) and 5:20, 5:22, 5:24 (public sin, discipline).
