09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Acts | English → Malayalam
Purpose and Method
This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every substantive parallel to the baseline Romans curriculum (and other curricula sharing this language package) found across the full book of Acts, chapters 1–28. It exists to (1) give Phase 2 translators a verse-anchored map of where doctrinally load-bearing intertextual material occurs, and (2) lock in rendering-consistency rules for any Scripture quotation, phrase, or doctrinal formula that recurs across Acts and Romans, so that a Malayalam learner moving between the two curricula encounters identical vocabulary for identical underlying claims.
Governing rule: every citation in this document uses the normalized “Book Chapter:Verse” format (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Joel 2:32”, “Acts 2:21”). Malayalam-side citations follow the baseline’s established Malayalam Bible book-name conventions; new book names required for Acts’ OT quotations that were not already listed in the baseline are recorded below.
Citation Normalization Conventions
The baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md fixes several Malayalam book names (Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk, Joel). This document extends that list with every additional OT/NT book cited in Acts’ quotations and allusions. All citations in Phase 2 output must use these forms with Arabic numeral verse numbers (never Malayalam numerals), matching the baseline’s YouVersion-alignment rule.

PART A — Core Passage Cross-Reference Table (Acts 2:1–41)
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 2:1-4 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | The apostles; the Twelve | Typological reversal of Genesis 11:1-9 (Babel: one language confused/scattered into many, in judgment) — Pentecost gives many languages so the gospel gathers “every nation under heaven” (Acts 2:5) in blessing. Also echoes Sinai theophany imagery (fire, sound) of Exodus 19:16-18. | The Babel/Pentecost reversal is a valuable, safe teaching point in Malayalam (no competing religious claim); the Sinai-fire echo should not be flattened — render as a specific theophanic sign, not generic supernatural spectacle (see അത്ഭുതം caution, glossary #12). |
| Acts 2:16-21 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost; Universal Scope of the Gospel | Peter; the prophet Joel | Direct quotation: Joel 2:28-32. | CONSISTENCY-CRITICAL. Acts 2:21 (“whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”) is quoted again at Romans 10:13. Both occurrences MUST use the identical Malayalam rendering: കര്ത്താവിന്റെ നാമം വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഏവനും രക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടും. Reuse baseline കര്ത്താവ്, രക്ഷ exactly. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 2:25-28 | Resurrection of Christ; Messianic Promise | David (as prophetic speaker); Christ | Direct quotation: Psalm 16:8-11. | Establishes that David’s own tomb (v.29) proves the psalm was prophetic of another — foundational typological argument. Risk: Medium (compositional; built on settled resurrection/Messiah terms). |
| Acts 2:29-31 | Davidic Covenant; Messianic Promise | David; Christ | Allusion: 2 Samuel 7:12-13; Psalm 132:11 (oath to David that one of his descendants would sit on his throne). | Reuse baseline seed_of_david (ദാവീദിന്റെ വംശത്തില്) framework from Romans 1:3. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 2:34-35 | Lordship of Christ; Deity of Christ | David (as speaker); Christ; God the Father | Direct quotation: Psalm 110:1. | CONSISTENCY RULE: the same Psalm 110:1 image (“at the right hand of God”) recurs conceptually at Romans 8:34 (“who is at the right hand of God… interceding for us”). Render “ദൈവത്തിന്റെ വലങ്കൈ” identically in both curricula. Risk: High (Christological exaltation claim). |
| Acts 2:36 | Lordship of Christ; Deity of Christ; Messianic Promise | Peter; “all the house of Israel” | Culminating theological declaration, not a direct OT quotation; functions as Acts’ parallel confession to Romans 10:9. | CONSISTENCY-CRITICAL. Reuse baseline കര്ത്താവ്, ക്രിസ്തു, യിസ്രായേല് exactly; apply identical doctrinal precision rules as Romans 10:9 per the baseline’s cross-document consistency table. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 2:38-39 | Repentance and Baptism; The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Peter; “you and your children… all who are far off” | Allusion: Joel 2:32’s “all flesh”/“everyone” scope; Isaiah 57:19 (“peace to him who is far and to him who is near,” echoed in “all who are far off”). | Anchors the doctrine that follows through the whole book: Gentile inclusion is already implicit in Peter’s Pentecost sermon, before Acts 10’s vision makes it explicit. Risk: High (universal-scope family). |
PART B — Full-Book Cross-Reference Matrix (Acts 1–28)
Chapter 1
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 1:8 | The Great Commission Fulfilled; Holy Spirit and Pentecost | The apostles | Allusion: Isaiah 49:6 (“a light… to the end of the earth”). Programmatic outline verse for the whole book (Jerusalem → Judea/Samaria → ends of the earth), fulfilled narratively by Acts 28:31. | Reuse baseline ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി (power) and new term ഭൂമിയുടെ അറ്റത്തോളം. Risk: Low-Medium; this is the book’s structural spine, not merely one verse among many — flag for curriculum-level consistency. |
| Acts 1:9-11 | The Great Commission Fulfilled; Ascension/Exaltation | Jesus; two men in white (angels) | Typological echo: 2 Kings 2:11 (Elijah taken up); apocalyptic “coming with clouds” echoes Daniel 7:13. | Reuse new term സ്വർഗ്ഗാരോഹണം with the Hindu-svarga-ascent caution already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md. Risk: High. |
| Acts 1:16-20 | Apostolic Authority (church order) | Judas; Peter | Direct quotations: Psalm 69:25 and Psalm 109:8 (“let his dwelling become desolate… let another take his office”). | Establishes Scripture-fulfillment reasoning behind choosing a Twelfth apostle. Risk: Low. |
| Acts 1:24-26 | Divine Calling; Election | The Eleven; Matthias; Joseph called Barsabbas | No direct OT quotation; casting lots (κλῆρος) echoes OT sortition practice (cf. Leviticus 16:8, Joshua 18:6, Proverbs 16:33). | Reuse baseline ദൈവത്തിന്റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്; distinguish ചീട്ടിടൽ from Malayalam fatalism idioms per glossary #40. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 2
See Part A above (Acts 2:1-41 verse-by-verse) and the following continuation:
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 2:42-47 | The Church as Community | The Jerusalem believers | No direct OT quotation; the description of shared life echoes the ideal covenant-community language of Deuteronomy 15:4 (“there will be no poor among you”). | See glossary #47-48 (breaking of bread; all things in common) for denominational and Kerala-communist-political sensitivities. Risk: High. |
Chapter 3
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 3:13 | Deity/Sonship of Christ; Servant typology | Peter; “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” | Allusion: Exodus 3:6, 3:15; Servant title from Isaiah 52:13. | Pair with glossary #42 (ദാസൻ, Servant); affirm exalted Isaianic title, not caste-linked social descriptor. Risk: High. |
| Acts 3:18 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Messianic Promise | ”all the prophets” | General allusion to the whole prophetic corpus foretelling Messiah’s suffering (cf. Isaiah 53; Psalm 22). | Reuse baseline പ്രവചനം/പ്രവാചകന്. Risk: Low. |
| Acts 3:22-23 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Moses; Christ | Direct quotation: Deuteronomy 18:15, 18:18-19 (the prophet like Moses). | Moses-typology: Christ as the definitive Prophet. Risk: Medium; requires OT background note for readers unfamiliar with the Deuteronomy passage. |
| Acts 3:25 | Davidic/Abrahamic Covenant; The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Abraham; “your offspring” | Direct quotation/allusion: Genesis 22:18; Genesis 26:4. | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: the Abrahamic covenant promise underlying this verse is the same covenant argued at length in Romans 4 (which quotes Genesis 15:6 at Romans 4:3). Keep ഉടമ്പടി vocabulary consistent with the Romans package. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 4
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 4:11 | Apostolic Authority; Christology (rejected/exalted) | Peter; builders; “the stone” (Christ) | Direct quotation: Psalm 118:22. | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: the same rejected-stone image recurs, combined with Isaiah 8:14 and Isaiah 28:16, at Romans 9:33. Render മൂലക്കല്ല് consistently in both curricula. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| Acts 4:12 | Salvation (exclusivity) | Peter | No direct OT quotation; functions as Acts’ clearest single-verse parallel to Romans 10:9-13’s exclusivity claim. | CONSISTENCY-CRITICAL. Reuse baseline രക്ഷ; must not be softened into “a” salvation among options, matching the escalation rule already fixed for Romans 10:9. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 4:24-26 | Providence; Persecution | The gathered believers; David (as prophetic speaker) | Direct quotation: Psalm 2:1-2. | Establishes that opposition to Christ was itself foreseen in Scripture — a providence/persecution pairing. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 4:33 | Grace; Resurrection; Apostolic Authority | The apostles | No direct OT quotation. | Reuse baseline കൃപ exactly (see also Romans 3:24, 5:2, 5:15-17, 11:5-6). Risk: High. |
Chapter 5
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 5:30 | Resurrection; Crucifixion | The apostles before the Sanhedrin | Allusion: Deuteronomy 21:22-23 (“hanging on a tree” as a curse-formula, later reinterpreted Christologically as in Galatians 3:13, outside this curriculum’s scope but worth noting for teachers). | Reuse baseline ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ്. Risk: Critical (per baseline resurrection tier). |
| Acts 5:3-4 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost (personhood/deity of the Spirit) | Ananias; Peter | No direct OT quotation; theological argument (lying to the Spirit = lying to God) parallels the personal-God theophany pattern throughout the Pentateuch. | Reuse baseline പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്. Risk: Critical (any Holy Spirit segment, per baseline escalation rule). |
Chapter 6
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 6:1-6 | The Church as Community; Apostolic Authority | The Twelve; Stephen; the Seven | No direct OT quotation; the appointment pattern echoes Exodus 18:21-22 (Moses appointing capable leaders to share the burden). | Reuse ശുശ്രൂഷ. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 6:3 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | The Seven (incl. Stephen) | — | Reuse “filled with the Spirit” caution (glossary #2). Risk: High. |
Chapter 7 (Stephen’s speech — the densest OT concentration in Acts)
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 7:2-4 | Abrahamic Covenant | Abraham | Quotation/allusion: Genesis 12:1; Genesis 11:31-12:5. | Background for covenant vocabulary shared with Romans 4. Risk: Low. |
| Acts 7:5-8 | Abrahamic Covenant; Circumcision | Abraham; Isaac | Direct quotation: Genesis 15:13-14; allusion: Genesis 17:8-14, Genesis 21:4. | Circumcision background feeds directly into the “Justification apart from the Law” doctrine developed in Acts 15. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 7:9-16 | Typology (Joseph as a rejected-then-exalted deliverer) | Joseph; his brothers | Narrative allusion: Genesis 37, 39-50 (esp. Genesis 45:4-8, 50:20). | TYPOLOGICAL NOTE: Joseph — rejected by his own, exalted by God, becomes his people’s deliverer/provider — is a widely recognized Christ-type; Stephen’s speech uses this pattern implicitly, building toward the explicit charge in v.52 that Israel likewise rejected “the Righteous One.” Teaching note recommended, not a translation-risk item per se. Risk: Low. |
| Acts 7:17-36 | Typology (Moses as rejected-then-exalted deliverer); Exodus/Deliverance | Moses; Pharaoh | Direct quotations: Exodus 2:14 (v.27-28, ironic “who made you ruler and judge”); Exodus 3:5-10 (vv.32-34, burning bush). | TYPOLOGICAL NOTE: the Moses pattern (rejected by his own generation, later recognized as ruler and deliverer, v.35) directly parallels the sermon’s climax about Christ (rejected, then exalted as ἀρχηγός, glossary #41). Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 7:37 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Moses; Christ | Direct quotation: Deuteronomy 18:15 (repeats 3:22). | Same Moses-typology as Acts 3:22; keep terminology (പ്രവാചകന്) consistent between the two occurrences. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 7:40 | Idolatry (golden calf) | Israel in the wilderness; Aaron | Direct quotation: Exodus 32:1. | Background for the idol-worship doctrine developed later at Acts 14, 17, 19. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 7:42-43 | Judgment; Idolatry | Israel; the prophet Amos | Direct quotation: Amos 5:25-27. | New OT book (Amos) for this curriculum; see citation table above. Risk: Low. |
| Acts 7:44 | Tabernacle typology | Moses | Allusion: Exodus 25:40. | Risk: Low. |
| Acts 7:46-47 | Davidic Covenant; Temple typology | David; Solomon | Allusion: Psalm 132:5; 1 Kings 6:1. | Risk: Low. |
| Acts 7:49-50 | God’s transcendence (contra idol-worship) | God (as speaker) | Direct quotation: Isaiah 66:1-2. | Reuse baseline ദൈവം; reinforces that God is not confined to any building or image, sharpening the idol/vigraham caution at glossary #35. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 7:51 | Universal Human Accountability; resisting the Spirit | Stephen’s accusation against the Sanhedrin | Allusion: Isaiah 63:10; Exodus 33:3; Deuteronomy 9:6 (“stiff-necked people”). | Idiom-handling rule applies (render meaning, not literal anatomy — see 07_semantic_analysis.md Chapter 7 note). Risk: Low (idiom); High (resisting-the-Spirit clause, per Holy Spirit tier). |
| Acts 7:56 | Christology; Persecution and Bold Witness | Stephen; “the Son of Man” | Allusion: Daniel 7:13-14. | Reuse new Critical-tier term മനുഷ്യപുത്രൻ (glossary #46); same review tier as Son of God. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 7:58-60 | Persecution and Bold Witness; Christ-parallel | Stephen; Saul (bystander) | NT parallel (not OT): echoes Luke 23:34, 23:46 (Jesus’ words from the cross, “Father, forgive them” / “into your hands I commit my spirit”). | TYPOLOGICAL NOTE: Stephen’s death is deliberately narrated to parallel Christ’s — the first martyr’s witness imitates his Lord. Teaching note recommended. Risk: Low (narrative parallel, not a translation-term issue). |
Chapter 8
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 8:32-33 | Messianic Promise; Suffering Servant typology; The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | The Ethiopian eunuch; Philip; Christ | Direct quotation: Isaiah 53:7-8. | MAJOR MESSIANIC ANCHOR. This is Acts’ most extended direct quotation of the Suffering Servant material also foundational to the doctrine of atonement generally (cf. baseline’s imputed_righteousness/justification family, Romans 4-5). No direct Romans quotation overlap, but same Isaiah 53 substructure underlies Pauline atonement theology throughout. Risk: High (Servant/atonement Christology). |
| Acts 8:9-24 | Apostolic Authority and Miracles (contrast with sorcery) | Simon the sorcerer; Peter | No direct OT quotation; echoes the Moses-versus-Egyptian-magicians pattern (Exodus 7:11-12, 8:18-19). | See glossary #13 (sorcery/manthravadam caution). Risk: High. |
Chapter 9
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 9:1-19 | Conversion of Paul; Divine Calling; Election | Saul/Paul; Ananias; Christ | No direct OT quotation; theophany pattern (light, voice, name repeated twice — “Saul, Saul”) echoes OT call-narratives (cf. Genesis 22:11, “Abraham, Abraham”; Exodus 3:4, “Moses, Moses”). | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: Paul’s own later references to this event (outside this curriculum, e.g. Galatians 1:15-16) use calling/election vocabulary identical to Romans 1:1’s “called to be an apostle.” Reuse baseline വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ട exactly. Risk: High. |
| Acts 9:15 | Conversion of Paul; Election | Christ (to Ananias, re: Paul) | No direct OT quotation. New term: σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς (glossary #19). | Built on baseline ദൈവത്തിന്റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്; escalate per election/predestination review rule. Risk: High. |
| Acts 9:2 | Conversion of Paul; Persecution | Saul | Introduces ἡ ὁδός (“the Way,” glossary #17) as the movement’s self-designation. | See മാർഗ്ഗം caution (Hindu marga-pluralism risk vs. Nasrani-heritage positive resonance). Risk: High. |
Chapter 10
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 10:9-16 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Peter | No direct OT quotation; the vision directly overturns the clean/unclean food categories legislated at Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. | See glossary #36 (ശുദ്ധം/അശുദ്ധം caste-purity caution). Risk: High. |
| Acts 10:34-35 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Universal Scope of the Gospel | Peter; Cornelius | Allusion: Deuteronomy 10:17; 2 Chronicles 19:7 (“God shows no partiality”). | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: the identical theological formula recurs at Romans 2:11 (“God shows no partiality”). Render പക്ഷഭേദം കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല identically in both curricula. Risk: High. |
| Acts 10:43 | Forgiveness of sins; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Peter; “all the prophets” | General allusion to the prophetic corpus (cf. Isaiah 53:11; Jeremiah 31:34, outside current book-name list but referenceable). | Reuse പാപമോചനം exactly; see glossary #6 caution. Risk: High. |
| Acts 10:44-46 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost (Gentile Pentecost) | Cornelius’s household | Direct narrative parallel to Acts 2:1-4 — “Gentile Pentecost.” | Must use identical vocabulary for “filled with the Spirit,” “other tongues” as Acts 2, to make the deliberate parallel visible to Malayalam readers. Risk: High. |
Chapter 11
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 11:1-18 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles; Repentance | Peter; the Jerusalem church | Recapitulates Chapter 10; no new direct OT quotation. | See glossary #4 (മാനസാന്തരം). Risk: High. |
| Acts 11:26 | The Church as Community | Believers at Antioch | Introduces the name Χριστιανός (“Christian”). | Reuse ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 12
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 12:7-11 | Providence; Apostolic Authority and Miracles | Peter; an angel | Typological echo: 2 Kings 19:35 (the angel of the Lord striking down Assyria) and Daniel 6:22 (Daniel delivered from the lions) — the pattern of angelic deliverance of God’s persecuted servant. | Reuse ദൂതൻ (glossary #51, preferred over മാലാഖ). Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 12:20-23 | Judgment on pride; Providence | Herod Agrippa I; an angel of the Lord | Typological echo: Daniel 4:28-33 (Nebuchadnezzar’s pride and humbling). | No direct quotation, but the pattern (a proud king struck down by God) is a recognized OT type; teaching note recommended. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 13
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 13:22 | Davidic Covenant | Paul; David | Allusion/near-quotation: 1 Samuel 13:14; Psalm 89:20. | Reuse ദാവീദ്. Risk: Low. |
| Acts 13:33 | Sonship of Christ; Resurrection | Paul; God the Father; Christ | Direct quotation: Psalm 2:7 (“You are my Son, today I have begotten you”). | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: the sonship-through-resurrection argument here directly parallels Romans 1:4 (“declared to be the Son of God… by his resurrection”), though Romans does not quote Psalm 2:7 verbatim. Keep ദൈവപുത്രന് rendering identical; treat both passages as making the same doctrinal claim (resurrection vindicates, does not create, eternal Sonship). Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 13:34 | Davidic Covenant; Resurrection | Paul | Direct quotation: Isaiah 55:3 (“the holy and sure blessings of David”). | Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 13:35 | Resurrection of Christ | Paul; David (as speaker) | Direct quotation: Psalm 16:10 (repeats Acts 2:27). | CONSISTENCY RULE: render identically to its first occurrence at Acts 2:27 within this same curriculum. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 13:38-39 | Justification apart from the Law | Paul | No direct OT quotation, but the argument directly anticipates Romans 3:20-28. | CONSISTENCY-CRITICAL. Reuse baseline നീതീകരണം and ന്യായപ്രമാണം exactly; mandatory theologian-review escalation per baseline rule for any justification/law-contrast segment. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 13:41 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (warning) | Paul; the prophet Habakkuk | Direct quotation: Habakkuk 1:5. | NOTE FOR TRANSLATORS: this is a different Habakkuk verse from Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by faith”), which is quoted at Romans 1:17 — the curriculum’s thesis verse. Do not conflate the two Habakkuk citations; they serve different rhetorical functions (warning vs. faith-thesis). Risk: Low (as long as the two are kept distinct). |
| Acts 13:47 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles; The Great Commission Fulfilled | Paul and Barnabas | Direct quotation: Isaiah 49:6 (“a light for the Gentiles… to the ends of the earth”). | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: the same “light to the Gentiles” theme is part of the Isaiah/Psalms catena at Romans 15:9-12 (Romans quotes Psalm 18:49, Deuteronomy 32:43, Psalm 117:1, Isaiah 11:10 — different specific verses, same Gentile-inclusion theme). Reuse ജനതകള് exactly; never ജാതികള്. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 13:48 | Election; The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Gentile hearers at Antioch | No direct OT quotation. New term: τεταγμένοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον (glossary #20). | Election/predestination family; theologian review required per baseline escalation rule. Risk: High. |
Chapter 14
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 14:15-17 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles (contra idolatry) | Paul and Barnabas; the crowd at Lystra | Allusion: Genesis 1:1 (God as Creator); Psalm 146:6; Psalm 65:9-11 (rain and fruitful seasons as evidence of God’s provident care). | See glossary #34-35 (living God vs. idols). Risk: High. |
| Acts 14:22 | Kingdom of God; Persecution | Paul and Barnabas | No direct OT quotation. | Reuse baseline ദൈവരാജ്യം. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 15
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 15:1-5 | Justification apart from the Law | ”certain men from Judea”; Pharisaic believers | Background: Genesis 17:10-14 (circumcision as covenant sign). | See glossary #31 (circumcision). Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 15:11 | Grace; Salvation; Lordship of Christ | Peter | No direct OT quotation; theological formula. | CONSISTENCY-CRITICAL. Directly parallels the grace-apart-from-works argument of Romans 3:24, 11:6. Reuse baseline കൃപ, രക്ഷ, കര്ത്താവ് exactly; escalate per grace-contrasted-with-law/works rule. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 15:16-18 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles; Davidic Covenant | James; Amos | Direct quotation: Amos 9:11-12. | KEY JERUSALEM COUNCIL CITATION. Anchors Gentile inclusion in OT prophecy itself, not merely apostolic innovation. Risk: High (universal-scope family). |
Chapter 16
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 16:31 | Salvation; Faith | Paul and Silas; the Philippian jailer | No direct OT quotation; functions as Acts’ second great salvation-confession verse, parallel to Romans 10:9 and Acts 4:12. | CONSISTENCY-CRITICAL. Reuse baseline വിശ്വാസം, കര്ത്താവ്, രക്ഷ exactly. Risk: Critical. |
| Acts 16:6-7 | Providence; The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | Paul; the Spirit of Jesus | No direct OT quotation. | Reuse ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം and പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്. Risk: Medium-High. |
Chapter 17
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 17:23 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Paul; the Athenians | No OT quotation; the “unknown god” altar is a Greek cultural reference, not Scripture. | See glossary #33. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 17:24-25 | God’s transcendence (contra idolatry) | Paul | Allusion: Isaiah 42:5; Psalm 50:9-12. | Reuses Acts 7:49-50/Isaiah 66:1-2 theme. Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 17:26 | Providence; Unity of nations | Paul | Allusion: Genesis 1:28; Deuteronomy 32:8. | Risk: Medium. |
| Acts 17:28 | (Non-Scriptural quotation, for translator awareness) | Paul; Greek poets (Epimenides; Aratus/Cleanthes) | NOT an OT/NT citation — Paul quotes pagan Greek poetry (“we are his offspring”) for rhetorical common ground. | IMPORTANT DISTINCTION FOR TRANSLATORS: this must not be formatted or footnoted as a Scripture citation; render as a quoted saying within Paul’s speech, not with Scripture-citation apparatus. Risk: Low, but a formatting/citation-category risk if mishandled. |
| Acts 17:31 | Universal Human Accountability; Resurrection | Paul | Allusion: Psalm 9:8; Psalm 96:13 (God will judge the world in righteousness). | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: shares the “God will judge… in righteousness” formula with Romans 2:16 and Romans 14:10. Reuse baseline നീതി; risk Critical per baseline righteousness tier. |
Chapter 18
No new OT quotations or allusions beyond established terms (“the Way,” baptism, teaching the word of the Lord — see 07_semantic_analysis.md Chapter 18). Reviewed; no new cross-reference entries required.
Chapter 19
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 19:13-16 | Apostolic Authority and Miracles (contrast with occultism) | The sons of Sceva; an evil spirit | Background allusion: Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (prohibition of sorcery/divination). | See glossary #14 (evil spirit) and #13 (sorcery). Risk: High. |
| Acts 19:23-27 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles (contra idolatry) | Demetrius; the Ephesian silversmiths; Artemis/Diana | No direct OT quotation; reuses the idol-worship theme of Acts 14 and 17. | See glossary #35. Risk: High. |
Chapter 20
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 20:28 | The Church as Community; Apostolic Authority | Paul; the Ephesian elders | Shepherd imagery echoes Ezekiel 34 and Psalm 23 (not directly quoted, but the pastoral metaphor’s OT root). | See glossary #22-24 (elder/overseer/shepherd) for the episcopal-polity sensitivity. Risk: High. |
| Acts 20:35 | Christ-Centered Ministry | Paul (quoting Jesus) | NT parallel, not OT: an unrecorded saying of Jesus (“It is more blessed to give than to receive”) not found verbatim in the Gospels — an agraphon. | IMPORTANT DISTINCTION FOR TRANSLATORS: cite as a saying attributed to the Lord Jesus, not as an OT quotation; do not force it into the OT-citation apparatus. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 21
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 21:23-26 | Justification apart from the Law (background) | Paul; four men under a vow | Background: Numbers 6:1-21 (the Nazirite vow). | See glossary re: Nazirite vow (07_semantic_analysis.md Chapter 21). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 22
No new OT quotations; retells Acts 9’s conversion narrative before the Jerusalem crowd. See Chapter 9 entries above for the underlying cross-references (theophany call-pattern, election). Reviewed; no new entries required beyond noting Acts 22:14’s “the Righteous One” as a Christological title consistent with Acts 3:14, 7:52 (reuse established നീതി/പരിശുദ്ധ compound).
Chapter 23
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 23:5 | Apostolic Authority (respect for legitimate authority) | Paul; the high priest Ananias | Direct quotation: Exodus 22:28 (“you shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people”). | Risk: Low. |
| Acts 23:6-8 | Resurrection of Christ (disputed) | Pharisees; Sadducees; Paul | No direct quotation; the resurrection controversy itself is the theological point at issue. | Reuse ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ്. Risk: Critical (even in this polemical third-party context). |
Chapter 24
No new OT quotations. Reuses law (ന്യായപ്രമാണം), resurrection, and righteousness/judgment vocabulary from earlier chapters (24:14-15, 24:21, 24:25). Reviewed; no new cross-reference entries required.
Chapter 25
No new OT quotations. The resurrection remains the substantive theological matter at issue (25:19), reusing the Critical-tier term established in Chapters 2, 4, 17, and 23. Reviewed; no new cross-reference entries required.
Chapter 26
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 26:16-18 | Conversion of Paul; Apostolic Authority | Christ (to Paul); Paul | Allusion: Isaiah 42:6-7; Isaiah 61:1 (open blind eyes; turn from darkness to light; forgiveness; inheritance among the sanctified). | Servant/commissioning language shared with Isaiah’s Servant Songs, same family as Acts 3:13/8:32-33. Risk: High. |
| Acts 26:23 | Messianic Promise; Resurrection; The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Paul | Allusion: Isaiah 53 (Christ must suffer); Isaiah 49:6 (“proclaim light,” repeats 13:47). | Risk: Critical (resurrection + messianic promise combination). |
Chapter 27
No direct OT quotations. The shipwreck narrative’s pattern (a prophet/servant of God at sea, divine deliverance through storm, cf. Jonah 1) is a recognized narrative-typological parallel worth noting for teaching, though not a translation-term risk. Providence (ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം) is the operative doctrine (27:22-25). Reviewed.
Chapter 28
| Acts Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Acts 28:26-27 | Universal Human Accountability; Fulfillment of Prophecy (hardening) | Paul; the prophet Isaiah | Direct quotation: Isaiah 6:9-10. | CROSS-CURRICULUM PARALLEL: the “hardening” motif recurs at Romans 11:8, which quotes a different underlying text (Deuteronomy 29:4 combined with Isaiah 29:10) for the same theological point (partial, purposeful hardening within God’s plan, not final rejection). Translators should render both curricula’s “hardening of hearing/seeing” vocabulary consistently (e.g., കേൾവി മുഷിഞ്ഞു / ഹൃദയം കടുത്തു family) even though the source verses differ, since this is Acts’ closing quotation and thematically pairs with Romans’ central Israel/Gentile argument. Risk: High. |
| Acts 28:31 | The Great Commission Fulfilled | Paul (in Rome) | Fulfills Acts 1:8’s programmatic outline (“to the end of the earth”) and echoes Isaiah 49:6 one final time. | Reuse new term തടസ്സം കൂടാതെ (unhindered, glossary #10) alongside established ധൈര്യം/പരസ്യമായി. This is the book’s rhetorical climax; render with full force, not administrative flatness. Risk: Medium (rhetorical weight), but bracket-verse status with 1:8 elevates its curriculum-level importance. |
PART C — Messianic Typology Summary
| Type (OT Figure/Pattern) | Antitype (Christ/NT Fulfillment) | Key Acts Passages | Key OT Passages | Malayalam Rendering Note |
|---|
| The Prophet like Moses | Christ as the definitive divine spokesperson | Acts 3:22-23, 7:37 | Deuteronomy 18:15, 18:18-19 | Reuse പ്രവാചകന് consistently at both occurrences. |
| The Suffering Servant | Christ’s suffering, death, and exaltation | Acts 3:13, 3:26, 4:27, 4:30, 8:32-35, 26:18, 26:23 | Isaiah 42, 49:1-6, 52:13-53:12 | Reuse ദാസൻ with the Kerala caste-name-suffix caution (glossary #42) at every occurrence; affirm exalted title, not status descriptor. |
| The Rejected Stone | Christ rejected by builders, made cornerstone | Acts 4:11 | Psalm 118:22 (cf. Isaiah 8:14, 28:16 in Romans 9:33) | Reuse മൂലക്കല്ല് consistently; cross-reference the Romans 9:33 combined-citation for teacher notes. |
| The Davidic King | Christ, David’s greater descendant, enthroned forever | Acts 2:29-36, 13:22-23, 13:33-34, 15:16 | 2 Samuel 7:12-16, Psalm 89, Psalm 132, Amos 9:11 | Reuse ദാവീദ്, ദാവീദിന്റെ വംശത്തില് exactly (baseline Romans 1:3 term). |
| Joseph (rejected by brothers, exalted, becomes deliverer/provider) | Implicit Christ-pattern within Stephen’s speech | Acts 7:9-16 | Genesis 37, 39-50 | Teaching-note item; not a translation-term risk. |
| Moses (rejected by his generation, later recognized as ruler/deliverer) | Implicit Christ-pattern within Stephen’s speech | Acts 7:17-36 | Exodus 2-3 | Teaching-note item; pairs with ἀρχηγός title (glossary #41). |
| The Son of Man (Daniel’s apocalyptic figure) | Christ’s divine authority and glory at God’s right hand | Acts 7:56 | Daniel 7:13-14 | Reuse Critical-tier മനുഷ്യപുത്രൻ; same review tier as Son of God. |
| Babel’s scattering (judgment, confusion of tongues) | Pentecost’s gathering (blessing, gift of tongues) | Acts 2:1-11 | Genesis 11:1-9 | Safe, positive teaching parallel; no competing religious claim in Malayalam context. |
| Stephen’s death echoing Christ’s death-words | Faithful witness imitating the Lord even in martyrdom | Acts 7:59-60 | (NT parallel: Luke 23:34, 23:46) | Narrative parallel; no translation-term risk, but valuable for the Persecution and Bold Witness doctrine’s teaching notes. |
PART D — Parallels to Romans (and Other Curricula): Rendering-Consistency Rules
The following rules govern any segment where Acts and Romans (or another curriculum sharing this Malayalam language package) quote the same OT text, use the same theological formula, or argue the same doctrinal point from different texts. These rules extend, and must never contradict, the baseline translation_memory.json and the cross-document consistency table in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
| # | Shared Element | Acts Citation | Romans Citation | Rendering Rule |
|---|
| 1 | ”Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Joel 2:32) | Acts 2:21 | Romans 10:13 | Render identically: കര്ത്താവിന്റെ നാമം വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഏവനും രക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടും. Risk: Critical. |
| 2 | Salvation-confession formula | Acts 2:36; Acts 4:12; Acts 16:31 | Romans 10:9 | All four verses function as parallel salvation-confession/exclusivity statements; apply the identical doctrinal-precision rule (no qualification of Christ’s supreme Lordship or salvation’s exclusivity) to every one, not only to the Romans occurrence. Risk: Critical. |
| 3 | ”God shows no partiality” | Acts 10:34 | Romans 2:11 | Render identically: ദൈവം പക്ഷഭേദം കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല. Risk: High. |
| 4 | Justification apart from the Law | Acts 13:38-39; Acts 15:11 | Romans 3:20-28; Romans 11:6 | Reuse baseline നീതീകരണം and ന്യായപ്രമാണം exactly in all four passages; escalate every occurrence for theologian review per the baseline’s justification/law-contrast rule. Risk: Critical. |
| 5 | Sonship vindicated/declared through resurrection | Acts 13:33 (quoting Psalm 2:7) | Romans 1:4 | Treat as the same doctrinal claim (resurrection vindicates, not creates, eternal Sonship); reuse ദൈവപുത്രന് and ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ് exactly in both. Risk: Critical. |
| 6 | Christ at “the right hand of God” (Psalm 110:1) | Acts 2:34-35 | Romans 8:34 | Render ദൈവത്തിന്റെ വലങ്കൈ identically in both curricula. Risk: High. |
| 7 | The Rejected Stone / Stumbling Stone | Acts 4:11 (Psalm 118:22) | Romans 9:33 (Isaiah 8:14, 28:16) | Different underlying verses, same image; reuse മൂലക്കല്ല് consistently; teacher note should connect the two passages explicitly. Risk: Medium. |
| 8 | Light to the Gentiles / Gentile inclusion catena | Acts 13:47 (Isaiah 49:6); Acts 15:16-18 (Amos 9:11-12) | Romans 15:9-12 (Psalm 18:49, Deuteronomy 32:43, Psalm 117:1, Isaiah 11:10) | Different underlying verses, same theme; reuse ജനതകള് exactly (never ജാതികള്) in every occurrence across both curricula. Risk: High. |
| 9 | Hardening of Israel (partial, purposeful, not final) | Acts 28:26-27 (Isaiah 6:9-10) | Romans 11:8 (Deuteronomy 29:4; Isaiah 29:10) | Different underlying verses, same doctrinal point; keep hardening-vocabulary register consistent across both curricula and flag for theologian review per the baseline’s “no distinction”/unity-language escalation rule, since both passages bear on Israel’s future within God’s plan. Risk: High. |
| 10 | Abrahamic covenant background (“your offspring”) | Acts 3:25 (Genesis 22:18); Acts 7:2-8 (Genesis 12, 15, 17) | Romans 4 (Genesis 15:6 at Romans 4:3) | Same covenant family; keep ഉടമ്പടി vocabulary consistent. Note Acts does not quote Genesis 15:6 directly, but the underlying Abrahamic-faith argument is identical to Romans 4’s; teacher notes should draw the connection. Risk: Medium. |
| 11 | Habakkuk citations — DO NOT CONFLATE | Acts 13:41 (Habakkuk 1:5) | Romans 1:17 (Habakkuk 2:4) | These are two distinct verses from the same OT book serving two distinct rhetorical purposes (warning vs. faith-thesis). Never substitute one Habakkuk citation for the other; verify citation numbers explicitly in Phase 2 QA. Risk: Low, but a specific conflation hazard flagged for automated review. |
| 12 | Non-Scriptural quotations (Greek poets; unrecorded sayings of Jesus) | Acts 17:28 (Greek poets); Acts 20:35 (agraphon) | — (no Romans parallel) | These must never be formatted with Scripture-citation apparatus. Flag distinctly in the segment cache as “non-canonical quotation” so Phase 2 footnoting does not misrepresent them as OT/NT citations. Risk: Low (formatting-category risk only). |
| 13 | ”Obedience of faith” / faith-obedience pairing | Acts 6:7 (“obedient to the faith,” conceptual parallel) | Romans 1:5; Romans 16:26 | Reuse baseline വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ അനുസരണം exactly wherever the Acts 6:7 concept is drawn out pedagogically, even though Acts 6:7 is not a verbatim match to the Romans phrase. Risk: Medium. |
| 14 | Filled with the Holy Spirit — cross-episode consistency | Acts 2:4; 4:8; 4:31; 6:3; 9:17; 10:44-46; 13:9; 13:52 | Romans (no direct parallel phrase, but shares Holy Spirit doctrine family) | Ensure every “filled with the Spirit” occurrence throughout Acts uses identical vocabulary (പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനാൽ നിറയുക family) and identical avoidance of ആവേശം; internal Acts consistency is itself a cross-reference discipline even without a Romans parallel. Risk: High. |
Summary
Acts is saturated with direct OT quotation in its speech-material (Peter’s sermons in chapters 2–4, Stephen’s speech in chapter 7, Paul’s synagogue sermons in chapters 13 and 28, and the Jerusalem Council’s ruling in chapter 15), while its narrative sections (chapters 9, 12, 16, 18–27) carry proportionally more typological and structural echoes than direct quotations. The heaviest concentration of both direct citation and Christological typology falls in chapter 7 (Stephen) and chapter 13 (Paul at Pisidian Antioch), both of which directly anticipate arguments Paul later develops at length in Romans. Fourteen specific rendering-consistency rules in Part D govern every point where this curriculum’s vocabulary must match the baseline Romans package exactly, in addition to the term-level consistency rules already fixed in translation_memory.json and 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
