Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Galatians (Koine Greek → Malayalam)
Methodology and Scope
This document analyzes the full text of Galatians (chapters 1–6) in the original Koine Greek for every load-bearing theological term. The core passage, Galatians 2:15–21, receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing terms using the same fields. Chapters that introduce no new theological vocabulary beyond terms already treated state this explicitly.
For every term already established in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json), this analysis reuses the recorded Malayalam rendering exactly and marks the entry [REUSED FROM BASELINE]. New terms specific to Galatians are marked [NEW] and receive full risk analysis for Malayalam destination-language rendering, with particular attention to Kerala’s religious landscape (Hindu bhakti/Vedantic vocabulary, folk practices such as the evil eye and elemental-spirit worship, Islamic/Mappila circumcision practice, and the caste-heritage sensitivities already documented in the baseline).
Fields per term: Original word | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning in Galatians | Malayalam rendering | Destination-language rendering risk.
PART A: CORE PASSAGE — Galatians 2:15–21 (Verse-by-Verse)
This passage is Paul’s theological hinge: the confrontation at Antioch becomes the doctrinal thesis statement for the entire letter — justification by faith, not works of the law; union with Christ in his crucifixion; grace not nullified.
Galatians 2:15
Greek: Ἡμεῖς φύσει Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἐθνῶν ἁμαρτωλοί
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jews | Ἰουδαῖοι | Ioudaioi | those of Judea/Judah | ethnic-covenantal identity | ”Jews,” “Jewish people” | Paul’s own covenant-people identity, contrasted with Gentile sinners in the following clause | യഹൂദര് | Low — established proper-ethnonym in Malayalam Bible tradition |
| Gentiles | ἐθνῶν | ethnōn | nations, peoples | non-Jewish peoples | ”Gentiles,” “nations” | Non-Jews, viewed (from the old covenant vantage point Paul is quoting/echoing) as outside the covenant | ജനതകള് [REUSED FROM BASELINE] | High — NEVER ജാതികള് (reads as “castes”); use ജനതകള് per baseline gentiles entry |
| sinners | ἁμαρτωλοί | hamartōloi | ones who miss the mark | morally guilty persons | ”sinners” | Common Jewish rhetorical shorthand for Gentiles as outside the law; Paul is about to overturn any implied ethnic hierarchy of guilt | പാപികള് (from പാപം) [REUSED root FROM BASELINE sin] | Medium — must not imply Jews are sinless by contrast; the verse sets up 2:16’s leveling claim |
Galatians 2:16
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| justified | δικαιοῦται / δικαιωθῶμεν / δικαιωθήσεται | dikaioutai / dikaiōthōmen / dikaiōthēsetai | to be declared righteous | forensic legal declaration | ”justified,” “made right,” “declared righteous” | God’s forensic declaration of right standing; the letter’s central doctrinal claim, repeated three times in one verse for emphasis | നീതീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു (verb form of നീതീകരണം) [REUSED FROM BASELINE justification] | Critical — never reduce to ക്ഷമ (mere forgiveness); must retain forensic-declarative sense |
| works of the law | ἔργα νόμου | erga nomou | deeds/works of law | law-keeping performance as basis of standing | ”works of the law,” “legal works,” “law-keeping” | The false basis for justification that Paul rejects — human performance under Torah, not merely “good deeds” generally | ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തികള് | Critical [NEW compound] — do not soften to a generic “good works” (നല്ല പ്രവൃത്തികള്), which would blur Paul’s specific target (Torah-performance) with general ethics; also guard against collapsing into ധര്മ്മം-style duty-fulfillment framing |
| faith in Jesus Christ | πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ / εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐπιστεύσαμεν | pisteōs Iēsou Christou | trust/faithfulness of/in Jesus Christ | personal trust directed at a specific object | ”faith in Jesus Christ,” “faith of Jesus Christ” (genitive ambiguity) | Trust reposed in Christ himself (not Christ’s own faithfulness, per majority reading in this context) as the sole instrumental means of justification | യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിലുള്ള വിശ്വാസം [REUSED FROM BASELINE faith/jesus] | High — the object of faith (Christ, not law-performance) must remain unambiguous in Malayalam syntax |
| law | νόμου | nomou | law | the Mosaic Torah | ”law,” “the Law” | The Mosaic law, contrasted with faith as the basis of justification | ന്യായപ്രമാണം [REUSED FROM BASELINE law] | Medium — never ധര്മ്മം |
| flesh | σάρξ (πᾶσα σάρξ) | pasa sarx | all flesh | idiom for “every human being” (Hebraic idiom, echoing Ps 143:2) | “flesh,” “no one,” “no human being” | Idiomatic totality — “no human being whatsoever” — not an ethical statement about the sinful nature (contrast with Gal 5’s ethical σάρξ) | മാംസം (ഒരു മനുഷ്യനും) — rendered idiomatically as “ഒരു മനുഷ്യനും…ഇല്ല” (no human being) rather than literal “flesh” | High [NEW — contextual variant of σάρξ] — literal മാംസം here would obscure the Hebraic idiom; translators must recognize this occurrence is NOT the ethical flesh-vs-Spirit sense developed in ch. 5, and must not render it with ജഡം (which Ch. 5 requires for the ethical sense) nor with a literal “flesh” that would confuse readers |
Galatians 2:17
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sinners | ἁμαρτωλοί | hamartōloi | ones who miss the mark | see 2:15 | ”sinners” | Jewish believers, once they associate with Gentiles in Christ, are recategorized as “sinners” by legalist critics | പാപികള് [REUSED root] | Medium |
| servant/minister | διάκονος | diakonos | one who serves/waits at table | agent, servant, deacon (later ecclesial office) | “servant,” “minister,” “agent” | Rhetorical question: does justification “in Christ” make Christ an agent/promoter of sin? Paul answers with emphatic denial | ശുശ്രൂഷകന് | Low [NEW] — standard term, no significant doctrinal collision; distinct from later technical “deacon” office sense |
| Certainly not! / God forbid! | μὴ γένοιτο | mē genoito | may it not become/happen | strong negation idiom | ”certainly not,” “God forbid,” “by no means” | Paul’s characteristic emphatic rejection of a false inference (used also Rom 3:4, 6, etc.) | ഒരിക്കലും അല്ല / ഒരിക്കലുമില്ല | Low [NEW idiom] — must render as emphatic rejection, not a mild “no” |
Galatians 2:18
Greek: εἰ γὰρ ἃ κατέλυσα ταῦτα πάλιν οἰκοδομῶ, παραβάτην ἐμαυτὸν συνιστάνω.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| tore down / build again | κατέλυσα / οἰκοδομῶ | katelysa / oikodomō | destroyed / build | metaphor of demolition and (re)construction | ”tore down,” “destroyed,” “rebuild” | Returning to law-based justification after having renounced it as the ground of righteousness | തകര്ത്തത് / വീണ്ടും പണിയുന്നു | Low [NEW metaphor] |
| transgressor | παραβάτης | parabatēs | one who steps across/over | law-breaker | ”transgressor,” “law-breaker” | Whoever rebuilds the law as the ground of righteousness proves himself, ironically, a law-breaker (since the law itself cannot be kept as a ground of righteousness) | അതിക്രമക്കാരന് | Medium [NEW] — related to sin (പാപം) but specifically a legal-transgression term; must not be flattened into generic “sinner,” since Paul’s irony depends on the specifically legal sense |
Galatians 2:19
Greek: ἐγὼ γὰρ διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον ἵνα θεῷ ζήσω. Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι·
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| died to the law | διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον | dia nomou nomō apethanon | through law, to law, I died | death to the law’s condemning power, itself effected through the law (which condemned Christ, in whom Paul died) | “died to the law” | Paul’s relationship to the law as a ground of life/condemnation has ended, so that he might live to God | ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിനു മരിച്ചു | High [NEW] — must not read as antinomianism (lawlessness); Paul dies TO the law’s claim on him for righteousness, not to moral obligation generally |
| crucified with Christ | Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι | Christō synestaurōmai | I have been co-crucified with Christ | perfect passive — a past act with continuing present effect; union with Christ’s death | ”crucified with Christ,” “co-crucified” | CORE DOCTRINE: believer’s identity is not self-generated moral effort but union with Christ’s death, terminating the old self’s claim to establish its own righteousness | ക്രിസ്തുവിനോടുകൂടെ ക്രൂശിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു | Critical [NEW] — this is the letter’s central identity claim (cf. Rom 6:6 concept, but Galatians’ own coinage συνεσταύρωμαι is a Pauline hapax-pattern word). Must preserve the perfect tense’s “once-for-all, abidingly true” force in Malayalam verb aspect (ക്രൂശിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു, not a simple past ക്രൂശിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, which would lose the continuing-state sense). Must not be softened into a devotional metaphor of self-sacrifice or ascetic mortification (a risk given Kerala’s strong tradition of penitential/ascetic piety, e.g. Way of the Cross devotions); this is a legal-relational death, not an achievement of self-discipline |
Galatians 2:20
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| no longer I who live | ζῶ δὲ οὐκέτι ἐγώ | zō de ouketi egō | I live, no longer I | radical identity transfer | ”it is no longer I who live” | The old self’s autonomous life has ended; identity is relocated in Christ | ഇനി ജീവിക്കുന്നത് ഞാനല്ല | High [NEW] — must not read as loss of personal identity/personhood (a risk of confusion with Advaita Vedantic “dissolution of the self,” a prominent Hindu philosophical concept in Kerala); Paul retains full personal agency (“in the flesh I live,” “I live by faith”) — this is transformed identity in union with Christ, not annihilation of selfhood |
| Christ lives in me | ζῇ ἐν ἐμοὶ Χριστός | zē en emoi Christos | Christ lives in me | indwelling presence | ”Christ lives in me” | Positive complement to the above — the risen Christ’s own life now animates the believer | ക്രിസ്തു എന്നില് ജീവിക്കുന്നു | High [NEW] — must be read as personal indwelling by the living, risen Christ, not a diffuse impersonal divine-presence concept (guard against assimilation to a monistic “God/Self in all” framing) |
| in the flesh | ἐν σαρκί | en sarki | in flesh | ordinary, neutral sense — physical bodily existence | ”in the flesh,” “in the body,” “in this life” | Neutral/physical use of σάρξ — ordinary embodied life, NOT the negative ethical sense of ch. 5 | ജഡത്തില് (ശരീരത്തില് എന്ന അര്ത്ഥത്തില്) | Medium [NEW — contextual variant] — translators must distinguish this neutral physical-life sense from the negative ethical σάρξ of Gal 5; recommend a translator note flagging the distinct sense to prevent readers from hearing this verse as self-condemning |
| faith in the Son of God | πίστει…τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ | pistei tou huiou tou theou | by faith, of the Son of God | trust directed at Christ as divine Son | ”faith in the Son of God” | Grounds ongoing Christian life in continued trust in Christ’s deity and finished work | ദൈവപുത്രനിലുള്ള വിശ്വാസം [REUSED FROM BASELINE son_of_god + faith] | Critical — ദൈവപുത്രന് required; never ദേവപുത്രന് |
| loved me | ἀγαπήσαντός με | agapēsantos me | having loved me | self-giving divine love | ”who loved me” | Christ’s own love as the motivating cause of the atonement | എന്നെ സ്നേഹിച്ചവന് | Low [NEW] — സ്നേഹം is the standard, well-established Malayalam Christian love term; no significant collision risk |
| gave himself for me | παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ | paradontos heauton hyper emou | having handed over himself on behalf of me | self-substitutionary self-giving | ”gave himself for me,” “delivered himself up for me” | Substitutionary, self-giving atonement language — Christ’s voluntary self-offering | തനിക്കായി തന്നെത്തന്നെ ഏല്പ്പിച്ചു എനിക്കുവേണ്ടി | Critical [NEW — atonement language] — per baseline escalation rules, any atonement/substitution language (cf. Rom 3:25 propitiation) requires human theologian review; must preserve voluntary self-substitution, not merely “helped” or “served” |
Galatians 2:21
Greek: οὐκ ἀθετῶ τὴν χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ· εἰ γὰρ διὰ νόμου δικαιοσύνη, Χριστὸς δωρεὰν ἀπέθανεν.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| nullify | ἀθετῶ | athetō | to set aside, reject, render void | annulment, rejection of validity | ”nullify,” “set aside,” “reject,” “make void” | Paul denies that his gospel of faith-righteousness nullifies or empties God’s grace of its meaning — the opposite is true of the law-based alternative | നിരാകരിക്കുന്നു / വൃഥാവിലാക്കുന്നു | High [NEW] — must convey legal/relational invalidation, not casual “ignore” |
| grace of God | τὴν χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ | tēn charin tou theou | the grace of God | see baseline grace | ”the grace of God” | The unmerited favor that grounds justification; central to the letter’s Law/Grace doctrine | ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കൃപ [REUSED FROM BASELINE grace] | High — keep grace explicitly Christ’s finished work, not bhakti-style devotional merit |
| righteousness | δικαιοσύνη | dikaiosynē | rightness, right standing | see baseline righteousness | ”righteousness” | If law-keeping could produce righteousness, Christ’s death would be pointless — the verse’s logical clincher | നീതി [REUSED FROM BASELINE righteousness] | High — never ധര്മ്മം |
| Christ died for no purpose | Χριστὸς δωρεὰν ἀπέθανεν | Christos dōrean apethanen | Christ died freely/for nothing | δωρεάν = “as a free gift,” idiomatically “in vain, needlessly, to no purpose" | "died for nothing,” “died in vain,” “died needlessly” | The devastating logical consequence Paul draws if righteousness could be attained by law: Christ’s death would have been unnecessary | ക്രിസ്തു വെറുതെ മരിച്ചു (നിഷ്ഫലമായി) | Critical [NEW] — δωρεάν shares its root with “gift” (δωρεά), an ironic echo of grace-as-gift; but the idiomatic sense here is “in vain/for nothing,” not “as a free gift.” Must render as “needlessly/without purpose” (നിഷ്ഫലമായി / വെറുതെ), not literally as a gift-term, which would produce a confusing double meaning in Malayalam |
PART B: WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER ANALYSIS
Chapter 1
Galatians opens with Paul’s apostolic self-defense, the doctrine of the singular true gospel, and his testimony of divine calling.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| apostle | ἀπόστολος | apostolos | one sent | delegated authority | ”apostle” | Gal 1:1 — Paul’s apostleship is not human-derived but directly from Jesus Christ and God the Father; foundational to “Paul’s Apostleship” doctrine | അപ്പോസ്തലന് [REUSED FROM BASELINE] | Low |
| not from man / not through man | οὐκ ἀπ᾽ ἀνθρώπων οὐδὲ διὰ ἀνθρώπου | ouk ap’ anthrōpōn oude dia anthrōpou | not from men, nor through a man | source/agency negation | ”not from men nor through man” | Emphatic denial of human commissioning; grounds authority claim | മനുഷ്യരില് നിന്നല്ല, മനുഷ്യന് മുഖാന്തരവുമല്ല | Medium [NEW] — must preserve the double negation’s force; ties to apostleship doctrine |
| grace and peace | χάρις…καὶ εἰρήνη | charis kai eirēnē | grace and peace | epistolary greeting formula | ”grace to you and peace” | Standard Pauline greeting, identical formula to Romans | കൃപയും സമാധാനവും [REUSED FROM BASELINE grace, peace] | Low |
| gospel | εὐαγγέλιον | euangelion | good news | see baseline | ”gospel,” “good news” | Gal 1:6–9 — the letter’s crisis: the Galatians are turning to “a different gospel,” which Paul insists is no gospel at all | സുവിശേഷം [REUSED FROM BASELINE] | High — see doctrine note below |
| a different gospel | ἕτερον εὐαγγέλιον | heteron euangelion | another/different gospel | qualitatively distinct, not merely “another instance" | "a different gospel,” “a distorted gospel” | The false teaching Paul confronts throughout Galatians — legalistic addition to grace | മറ്റൊരു സുവിശേഷം (വ്യത്യസ്തമായ) | High [NEW] — ἕτερον (qualitatively other) must be distinguished from ἄλλο (another of the same kind, used in the next clause: “not that there is another (ἄλλο) gospel”); Malayalam must convey that this “different gospel” is not really gospel at all |
| accursed / anathema | ἀνάθεμα | anathema | a thing set up (for destruction), a curse-offering | devoted to divine judgment/destruction | ”accursed,” “let him be cursed,” “anathema” | Gal 1:8–9 — Paul’s double, emphatic curse-pronouncement on anyone preaching a false gospel, even himself or an angel | ശപിക്കപ്പെട്ടവന് ആയിരിക്കട്ടെ (അനാഥേമ) | Critical [NEW] — Kerala’s popular religious culture (both folk-Hindu and, syncretistically, some folk-Christian practice) includes strong belief in curses, black magic (മന്ത്രവാദം), and the evil eye. Rendering ἀνάθεμα must communicate a solemn covenantal act of God’s own judicial verdict against false teaching — NOT a magical curse invoked by human ritual power. A translator/theologian note is required distinguishing Paul’s apostolic pronouncement of divine judgment from folk-magical cursing practices familiar to readers. |
| revelation | ἀποκάλυψις | apokalypsis | unveiling, disclosure | divine self-disclosure | ”revelation” | Gal 1:12 — Paul received the gospel not from human tradition but “through a revelation of Jesus Christ”; grounds his apostolic authority and connects to the baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine | വെളിപ്പെടുത്തല്/വെളിപാട് | High [NEW] — must be distinguished from Hindu categories of shruti (revelation “heard” by sages) or from generic mystical insight; this is a specific, unique, historical disclosure of the risen Christ to Paul, not an ongoing/repeatable mystical experience-category |
| zealous / zeal | ζηλωτής | zēlōtēs | zealot, one who is zealous | intense devotion, sometimes violent | ”zealous,” “zealot” | Gal 1:14 — Paul’s pre-conversion zeal for Jewish ancestral traditions, driving his persecution of the church | തീക്ഷ്ണതയുള്ളവന് | Medium [NEW] — must not carry only a positive devotional connotation (as ഭക്തി/തീക്ഷ്ണത often does in devotional contexts); here it describes misguided, even violent zeal prior to grace |
| persecuted | ἐδίωκον | ediōkon | I was pursuing/persecuting | hostile pursuit | ”persecuted” | Gal 1:13, 23 — Paul’s violent pre-conversion opposition to the church, underscoring the grace of his calling | പീഡിപ്പിച്ചു | Low [NEW] — standard term |
| set apart | ἀφορίσας | aphorisas | having set apart/marked off | election/separation from birth | ”set me apart,” “separated me” | Gal 1:15 — echoes the baseline’s “Separation unto God’s Service” doctrine; Paul was set apart before birth, paralleling Jeremiah 1:5 | വേര്തിരിച്ചു | Medium [NEW, connects to baseline doctrine separation_unto_gods_service] |
| called | καλέσας | kalesas | having called | see baseline called | ”called me” | Gal 1:15 — God’s sovereign calling of Paul by grace, prior to and apart from any merit | വിളിച്ചു [REUSED FROM BASELINE called] | Medium |
| reveal his Son | ἀποκαλύψαι τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ | apokalypsai ton huion autou | to reveal his Son | see son_of_god, revelation | ”to reveal his Son in me” | Gal 1:16 — the content of Paul’s revelation is specifically the Son of God | തന്റെ പുത്രനെ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുക [REUSED FROM BASELINE son_of_god] | Critical |
Chapter 2 (beyond the core passage, Gal 2:1–14)
Galatians 2:15–21 is treated verse-by-verse above (Part A). The remainder of the chapter narrates the Jerusalem council and the Antioch confrontation that occasions Paul’s doctrinal statement.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| truth of the gospel | ἀλήθεια τοῦ εὐαγγελίου | alētheia tou euangeliou | truth of the gospel | doctrinal integrity | ”truth of the gospel” | Gal 2:5, 14 — what Paul refuses to compromise, even under social pressure from “pillars” of the church | സുവിശേഷത്തിന്റെ സത്യം [REUSED FROM BASELINE gospel + standard സത്യം] | High [NEW compound] — connects directly to “True Gospel versus False Gospels” doctrine |
| circumcision | περιτομή | peritomē | cutting around | the Jewish covenant sign; also used metonymically for “the circumcision party/Jewish believers" | "circumcision,” “the circumcised” | Gal 2:3, 7–9, 12 — the flashpoint controversy of the letter: whether Gentile believers must be circumcised to belong fully to God’s people | പരിച്ഛേദനം | Critical [NEW] — established Malayalam Bible term for the Old Testament covenant sign (also used of Christian infant/adult male circumcision practice among some Mappila Muslim and even some historic Jewish-Malayalam communities of Kerala, e.g. the ancient Cochin Jewish community). Translators must keep clear that Paul does not condemn the rite itself as sin, but its imposition as a REQUIREMENT for justification/covenant membership — a subtle distinction requiring theologian review, since Kerala readers may otherwise map this debate onto the (unrelated) contemporary Hindu-Muslim-Christian conversation about circumcision as a religious/cultural marker |
| pillars | στῦλοι | styloi | pillars, columns | metaphor for foundational leaders | ”pillars,” “leaders,” “those esteemed as leaders” | Gal 2:9 — James, Peter (Cephas), and John, the recognized leaders of the Jerusalem church | തൂണുകള് | Low [NEW metaphor] |
| false brothers | ψευδάδελφοι | pseudadelphoi | false brothers | infiltrating false believers | ”false brothers,” “false believers” | Gal 2:4 — those who pressed for circumcision under the guise of Christian fellowship | കള്ള സഹോദരന്മാര് | Medium [NEW compound] — connects to False Gospel doctrine |
| hypocrisy | ὑπόκρισις | hypokrisis | play-acting, pretense | inconsistency between profession and practice | ”hypocrisy,” “insincerity” | Gal 2:13 — Peter’s and Barnabas’s inconsistent withdrawal from Gentile table-fellowship under pressure | കാപട്യം | Low [NEW] — standard Malayalam ethical term, low ambiguity |
| Gentiles / Jews (table fellowship) | ἐθνικῶς / Ἰουδαϊκῶς | ethnikōs / Ioudaikōs | in Gentile manner / in Jewish manner | manner-of-life adverbs | ”like a Gentile,” “like a Jew” | Gal 2:14 — describes Peter’s inconsistent behavior regarding table fellowship | ജനതകളെപ്പോലെ / യഹൂദരെപ്പോലെ [REUSED root FROM BASELINE gentiles] | Medium — connects to Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine already flagged High in baseline given Kerala’s internal caste-heritage sensitivities |
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 develops the Abrahamic Covenant and Promise doctrine and the Law’s Purpose doctrine at length.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| bewitched | ἐβασκάνατε | ebaskanate | cast the evil eye upon | folk-idiom for malicious deception via envious/evil gaze | ”bewitched,” “put a spell on,” “deceived” | Gal 3:1 — Paul’s rhetorical rebuke: who has cast an “evil eye” on the Galatians, leading them from grace back to law? | ആരാണ് നിങ്ങളെ കണ്ണേറ്റിയത്? (മന്ത്രവാദത്താല് വഴിതെറ്റിച്ചത്) | High [NEW] — GENUINE CULTURAL COLLISION: Kerala folk belief (shared across Hindu, Muslim, and syncretistic folk-Christian practice) holds a live concept of “കണ്ണേറ്” (kannēru, the evil eye) and protective rituals against it. Paul’s own Greek idiom happens to match this folk category almost exactly. This creates BOTH an opportunity (vivid, immediately intelligible metaphor) and a risk (readers may take the verse as affirming literal sorcery/evil-eye causation as doctrinally real, or conversely may feel the text endorses folk-magical worldview). A translator note should clarify Paul is using a rhetorical figure of speech for being deceived/led astray, not making a doctrinal claim about occult power |
| Abraham | Ἀβραάμ | Abraam | (proper name) | patriarch | ”Abraham” | Gal 3:6–9, 14, 16, 18, 29 — central figure of the Abrahamic Covenant doctrine; his faith-based justification (Gen 15:6) is Paul’s proof text | അബ്രാഹാം (established form per baseline requirements doc) | Low — proper name, established Malayalam Bible form |
| credited as righteousness | ἐλογίσθη…εἰς δικαιοσύνην | elogisthē…eis dikaiosynēn | it was reckoned to him for righteousness | forensic crediting | ”credited as righteousness,” “counted as righteousness” | Gal 3:6, quoting Genesis 15:6 — the same imputed-righteousness doctrine as Romans 4 | ആരോപിതനീതി [REUSED FROM BASELINE imputed_righteousness] | Critical — never “earned righteousness” |
| blessing of Abraham | εὐλογία τοῦ Ἀβραάμ | eulogia tou Abraam | blessing of Abraham | covenant blessing extended to the nations | ”blessing of Abraham” | Gal 3:14 — the Gentile inclusion in Abraham’s covenant blessing, received through Christ | അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം | Medium [NEW] — connects to Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine |
| curse (of the law) | κατάρα (τοῦ νόμου) | katara (tou nomou) | curse | covenantal judicial curse for law-breaking | ”curse,” “curse of the law” | Gal 3:10, 13 — those relying on law-keeping are under its curse, since no one keeps it perfectly; Christ redeems by becoming a curse for us (quoting Deut 21:23) | ശാപം (ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിന്റെ ശാപം) | Critical [NEW] — as with ἀνάθεμα above, ശാപം risks collision with Kerala’s popular belief in curses transmitted through sorcery, ancestral wrongdoing, or ritual impurity (a live folk category, occasionally syncretized even into folk-Christian practice around exorcism ministries). Must be clearly framed as God’s own covenantal-forensic verdict against law-breaking, not a transmissible magical affliction; and must clarify Christ voluntarily BEARING this curse (substitutionary), not merely removing a magical hex |
| redeemed | ἐξηγόρασεν | exēgorasen | bought out, redeemed | purchase out of bondage/liability, often of a slave or from a debt | ”redeemed,” “bought us out,” “ransomed” | Gal 3:13, 4:5 — Christ’s redemptive, substitutionary purchase of believers from the law’s curse | വീണ്ടെടുത്തു | High [NEW, connects to salvation doctrine] — must retain substitutionary-purchase sense (echoes slave-market imagery), not merely “rescued” generically |
| promise | ἐπαγγελία | epangelia | promise, announcement | God’s covenantal pledge | ”promise,” “promises” | Gal 3:14, 16–22, 29 — the Abrahamic promise, contrasted with the law, as the basis of the inheritance received by faith | വാഗ്ദാനം | High [NEW] — must be distinguished from ഉടമ്പടി (covenant, the broader relational bond, reused from baseline); promise is the specific pledged content within the covenant. Also must not be flattened to a merely human “promise” register — this is a divine, unbreakable pledge |
| covenant | διαθήκη | diathēkē | covenant, will/testament | see baseline covenant | ”covenant” | Gal 3:15, 17 — Paul’s legal analogy: a ratified covenant/will cannot be annulled by a later law | ഉടമ്പടി [REUSED FROM BASELINE] | Medium |
| seed / offspring | σπέρμα | sperma | seed | descendant(s); singular form used by Paul with theological precision | ”seed,” “offspring,” “descendant” | Gal 3:16, 19, 29 — Paul’s argument hinges on the grammatical singular (“seed,” not “seeds”) pointing to Christ as the one true heir of the promise, with believers included “in” him | സന്തതി / വിത്ത് (അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ സന്തതി) | Critical [NEW] — Paul’s entire argument in 3:16 depends on Malayalam preserving the same singular/collective ambiguity the Greek exploits (σπέρμα, like Hebrew zera, can be read as either singular “one descendant” or collective “descendants”). Malayalam സന്തതി shares this same helpful ambiguity, but translators must add a note explaining Paul’s specific interpretive move (seed = Christ, singular) so the theological argument is not lost. Distinguish from the baseline’s seed_of_david (ദാവീദിന്റെ വംശത്തില്), which is a related but distinct covenant-lineage term |
| mediator | μεσίτης | mesitēs | one who stands in the middle | go-between, arbitrator | ”mediator” | Gal 3:19–20 — Moses as mediator of the law, contrasted with the direct, unmediated promise to Abraham | മധ്യസ്ഥന് | Medium [NEW] — distinct sense from baseline’s intercession (മധ്യസ്ഥത, the Spirit’s/Christ’s intercessory prayer); here it is a legal-covenantal go-between role (Moses), not intercessory prayer. Translator note recommended to avoid conflating the two uses |
| guardian / tutor | παιδαγωγός | paidagōgos | child-attendant, tutor-slave | a household slave responsible for supervising and disciplining a child until adulthood (Greco-Roman social role, no exact Malayalam equivalent) | “guardian,” “tutor,” “schoolmaster,” “disciplinarian” | Gal 3:24–25 — the law’s temporary, custodial role until Christ came; central to the “Law’s Purpose” doctrine | സൂക്ഷിപ്പുകാരന് / ശിക്ഷണം നല്കുന്നവന് (വിശദീകരണക്കുറിപ്പ് ആവശ്യം) | High [NEW — cultural gap] — no Malayalam social institution exactly parallels the Greco-Roman paidagōgos (a supervising slave, not a teacher in the modern sense, and not a benign guardian in the Malayalam legal sense either). A brief explanatory phrase or footnote is required so readers do not read this as either a benevolent modern “guardian” or a full “teacher” |
| faith | πίστις | pistis | see baseline | ”faith,” “believing” | Gal 3:2, 5, 7–9, 11–12, 22–26 — the entire chapter’s argument turns on faith versus law-works as the basis of righteousness and Spirit-reception | വിശ്വാസം [REUSED FROM BASELINE] | Medium | |
| all one in Christ | πάντες…εἷς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ | pantes…heis este en Christō | all…you are one in Christ | corporate unity transcending former distinctions | ”all one in Christ Jesus” | Gal 3:28 — “neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female” — foundational unity text, paralleling Romans’ “no distinction” doctrine | എല്ലാവരും ക്രിസ്തുവില് ഒന്നാകുന്നു | High [NEW, connects directly to baseline doctrines universal_scope_of_gospel / unity_of_jews_and_gentiles] — per the baseline’s documented sensitivity, Kerala’s own Christian community carries an internal, historically live version of exactly this tension (Syrian Christian community’s elevated social status vs. Dalit-convert communities; also relevant: gender and social-status distinctions in some denominational church-governance practice). Must be rendered with full, unqualified force; theologian review required |
Chapter 4
Chapter 4 develops Adoption and Sonship doctrine, contrasts slavery and sonship, and introduces the Hagar-Sarah allegory.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| elemental spirits / elements of the world | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | stoicheia tou kosmou | basic elements/components of the world | ambiguous — could mean basic principles/rudiments, or personified cosmic/elemental powers | ”elemental spirits,” “elemental forces,” “basic principles of the world” | Gal 4:3, 9 — the enslaving powers (whether legalistic religious systems generally, or actual spiritual powers) from which Christ’s coming liberates believers | ലോകത്തിന്റെ മൂലതത്വങ്ങള് / ആദിശക്തികള് (വിശദീകരണക്കുറിപ്പ് ആവശ്യം) | Critical [NEW] — GENUINE CULTURAL COLLISION: Kerala’s Hindu and Ayurvedic cosmology has a well-known “five elements” (പഞ്ചഭൂതങ്ങള് — earth, water, fire, air, ether/space) framework, and Kerala folk-Hindu religion (including theyyam ritual performance and sacred-grove/കാവ് worship) includes veneration of elemental and nature-spirit deities. A literal rendering risking “the five elements” or “elemental deities” framing would import an entirely different cosmology. Must render carefully — likely with an explanatory phrase such as “ലോകത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാന ശക്തികള്/നിയമങ്ങള്” plus a translator/theologian note distinguishing Paul’s reference (enslaving religious/spiritual powers, possibly astral or legalistic) from the Hindu Panchabhuta framework and from elemental-deity worship |
| adoption / sonship | υἱοθεσία | huiothesia | see baseline | ”adoption,” “sonship” | Gal 4:5 — believers receive full son-status through Christ | ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം [REUSED FROM BASELINE] | Medium | |
| Abba, Father | Ἀββά, ὁ πατήρ | Abba, ho patēr | see baseline | ”Abba, Father” | Gal 4:6 — same intimate cry as Romans 8:15 | അബ്ബാ, പിതാവേ [REUSED FROM BASELINE abba, father] | Medium | |
| heir | κληρονόμος | klēronomos | inheritor | one entitled to receive an inheritance | ”heir” | Gal 4:1, 7 — sonship entails inheritance; central to Adoption/Sonship doctrine | അവകാശി | Low [NEW] — standard inheritance term, low ambiguity |
| slave | δοῦλος | doulos | slave, bondservant | involuntary servitude | ”slave,” “bondservant” | Gal 4:1, 7 (contrast with son); also 4:22–31 in the Hagar-Sarah allegory | അടിമ | Medium [NEW, connects to baseline caste-heritage sensitivity notes] — Kerala’s own social history includes historic slavery and caste-based bondage; must ensure the metaphor’s theological point (former bondage to the law, now sons) is not read as commentary on any present-day social/caste group |
| fullness of time | τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου | to plērōma tou chronou | the fullness of the time | the divinely appointed, complete moment | ”the fullness of time,” “when the time had fully come” | Gal 4:4 — the precisely appointed moment of Christ’s incarnation, echoing the baseline’s Incarnation doctrine | കാലസമ്പൂര്ണ്ണത | Medium [NEW] |
| born of a woman, born under the law | γενόμενον ἐκ γυναικός, γενόμενον ὑπὸ νόμον | genomenon ek gynaikos, genomenon hypo nomon | having been born of a woman, born under law | true, full humanity and full submission to Torah | ”born of a woman, born under the law” | Gal 4:4 — directly parallels the baseline’s Incarnation/Humanity of Christ doctrine (cf. Rom 1:3’s “seed of David according to the flesh”) | സ്ത്രീയില്നിന്നു ജനിച്ചവന്, ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിന് കീഴില് ജനിച്ചവന് | Critical [REUSED DOCTRINE FROM BASELINE incarnation/humanity_of_christ] — must affirm real, full human birth; never softened toward a docetic or avatar-like “appearance” |
| allegory | ἀλληγορούμενα | allēgoroumena | things being spoken allegorically | figurative/typological interpretive mode | ”allegorically speaking,” “these things are an allegory” | Gal 4:24 — Paul’s own explicit hermeneutical signal for the Hagar-Sarah narrative | ഉപമാര്ത്ഥത്തില് പറയുന്നു | Low [NEW] — standard hermeneutical term |
| Jerusalem above | ἡ ἄνω Ἰερουσαλήμ | hē anō Ierousalēm | the Jerusalem above | the heavenly, free, eschatological Jerusalem | ”the Jerusalem above,” “the heavenly Jerusalem” | Gal 4:26 — the free, promise-based covenant community, contrasted with earthly bondage under law | മേലുള്ള യെരൂശലേം | Medium [NEW] — must be distinguished from any contemporary political sensitivity around the earthly city (per the baseline’s note on israel’s political sensitivity); this is an eschatological-theological category |
| bondwoman / slave woman | παιδίσκη | paidiskē | young female slave | female slave, servant-girl | ”bondwoman,” “slave woman,” “servant” | Gal 4:22–31 — Hagar, representing the covenant of law/bondage, contrasted with Sarah, the free woman representing the covenant of promise | അടിമസ്ത്രീ | Medium [NEW] |
Chapter 5
Chapter 5 develops Freedom in Christ, Circumcision, Flesh versus Spirit, Fruit of the Spirit, and Faith Working through Love.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| freedom / liberty | ἐλευθερία | eleutheria | freedom | liberation from bondage | ”freedom,” “liberty” | Gal 5:1, 13 — the positive result of Christ’s redemptive work, the letter’s central practical doctrine (“Freedom in Christ”) | സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം | Critical [NEW] — must be distinguished from purely political/national freedom (a term with strong resonance in the Indian independence-movement register) and from a license-to-sin misreading (which Paul himself immediately guards against in 5:13); this is freedom from the law’s condemning power and from sin’s dominion, exercised in loving service, not autonomous self-indulgence |
| yoke of slavery | ζυγῷ δουλείας | zygō douleias | yoke of slavery | agricultural/servitude metaphor for bondage | ”yoke of slavery,” “yoke of bondage” | Gal 5:1 — warning against returning to law-based bondage after having been freed | അടിമത്തത്തിന്റെ നുകം | Medium [NEW metaphor] |
| circumcision (profits nothing) | περιτομή | peritomē | see ch. 2 | ”circumcision” | Gal 5:2–6, 11 — Paul’s sharpest statement: submitting to circumcision as a requirement severs one from Christ’s benefit entirely | പരിച്ഛേദനം [REUSED from Ch. 2 analysis] | Critical — see Ch. 2 notes | |
| faith working through love | πίστις…δι᾽ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη | pistis di’ agapēs energoumenē | faith working itself out through love | active, love-expressed faith | ”faith working through love,” “faith expressing itself in love” | Gal 5:6 — Paul’s positive summary of what actually matters “in Christ Jesus,” central to the “Faith Working through Love” doctrine | സ്നേഹത്തിലൂടെ പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന വിശ്വാസം | High [NEW compound, combines REUSED faith with new love] — must preserve that love is the active EXPRESSION of faith, not a separate additional requirement alongside faith for justification (which would reintroduce a works-basis) |
| love | ἀγάπη | agapē | selfless, other-directed love | see also Gal 5:22 (fruit) | “love” | Gal 5:6, 13–14, 22 — the fulfillment of the law and the first-listed fruit of the Spirit | സ്നേഹം | Low [NEW] — the standard, well-established Malayalam Christian term for divine/selfless love, distinct from erotic (കാമം) or mere affectionate (ഇഷ്ടം) registers; low ambiguity |
| flesh | σάρξ | sarx | flesh | in this chapter, specifically the ETHICAL sense: the sinful, self-oriented human nature opposed to the Spirit | ”the flesh,” “sinful nature” | Gal 5:13, 16–17, 19–21, 24 — the “Flesh versus Spirit” doctrine’s key term; catalogued with a list of “works of the flesh” (sexual immorality, idolatry, sorcery, strife, etc.) | ജഡം | Critical [NEW — ethical sense, DISTINCT from flesh in 2:16/2:20’s neutral idiomatic/physical uses above] — TRANSLATOR NOTE REQUIRED: Malayalam ജഡം (ethical, sin-inclined human nature) must be kept distinct from the baseline’s positive incarnational term മാംസധാരണം (“flesh-taking,” i.e. the Son becoming man) even though both derive from the same root മാംസം (flesh/meat). Using the same root carelessly across these two very different doctrines (Incarnation = good; flesh’s works = evil) risks a confusing implicit association. Consistent use of ജഡം for the Gal 5 ethical sense (as already standard in Malayalam Bible tradition, e.g. Rom 8’s ജഡം/ആത്മാവ് contrast) avoids this collision |
| Spirit | Πνεῦμα | Pneuma | Spirit | the Holy Spirit, personal and divine | ”Spirit,” “the Spirit” | Gal 5:5, 16–18, 22, 25 — walking, being led, and bearing fruit by the (Holy) Spirit, contrasted with the flesh | പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് / ആത്മാവ് [REUSED FROM BASELINE holy_spirit] | Critical — never ബ്രഹ്മം or പരമാത്മാവ്; context confirms this is the same personal Holy Spirit as in Romans, not a generic “spirit vs. matter” dualism |
| works of the flesh | τὰ ἔργα τῆς σαρκός | ta erga tēs sarkos | the works of the flesh | catalogue of vices | ”works of the flesh,” “acts of the sinful nature” | Gal 5:19–21 — sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, sorcery (φαρμακεία — note: literally “drug/potion use,” associated with occult practice), enmity, strife, jealousy, etc. | ജഡത്തിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തികള് | High [NEW compound] — the term φαρμακεία (“sorcery,” Gal 5:20) within this list has its own Kerala-specific resonance (മന്ത്രവാദം, black magic, potion/charm practices still culturally present); render as മന്ത്രവാദം/ആഭിചാരം with awareness this names a real, recognizable practice to Malayalam readers, not an archaic or foreign category |
| fruit of the Spirit | καρπὸς τοῦ Πνεύματος | karpos tou Pneumatos | fruit of the Spirit | singular “fruit” (unity) with nine listed qualities | ”fruit of the Spirit” | Gal 5:22–23 — central positive catalogue: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; central to the “Fruit of the Spirit” doctrine | ആത്മാവിന്റെ ഫലം | High [NEW] — note the Greek’s deliberate SINGULAR “fruit” (not “fruits”), indicating unified Spirit-produced character rather than a checklist of separable achievements; translator note recommended so the Malayalam plural-sounding list of virtues does not obscure the underlying unity |
| joy | χαρά | chara | joy | gladness rooted in God | ”joy” | Gal 5:22 | സന്തോഷം | Low [NEW] |
| patience | μακροθυμία | makrothymia | long-temperedness | forbearance, longsuffering | ”patience,” “longsuffering,” “forbearance” | Gal 5:22 | ദീര്ഘക്ഷമ | Low [NEW] |
| kindness | χρηστότης | chrēstotēs | usefulness, kindness | benevolent disposition | ”kindness” | Gal 5:22 | ദയ | Low [NEW] |
| goodness | ἀγαθωσύνη | agathōsynē | goodness | moral excellence in action | ”goodness” | Gal 5:22 | നന്മ | Low [NEW] |
| faithfulness | πίστις | pistis | (here) faithfulness/reliability | note the SAME Greek word rendered “faith” elsewhere; here a character trait, not saving trust | ”faithfulness” | Gal 5:22 | വിശ്വസ്തത | Medium [NEW — contextual variant of the baseline faith term] — Malayalam must distinguish വിശ്വാസം (trust/faith, saving faith) from വിശ്വസ്തത (faithfulness/reliability, a fruit of the Spirit); using the same word for both would blur two distinct concepts |
| gentleness | πραΰτης | prautēs | gentleness, meekness | strength under control | ”gentleness,” “meekness” | Gal 5:23 | സൗമ്യത | Low [NEW] |
| self-control | ἐγκράτεια | egkrateia | self-mastery | discipline over desires | ”self-control,” “temperance” | Gal 5:23 | ആത്മനിയന്ത്രണം | Low [NEW] |
| crucified the flesh | τὴν σάρκα ἐσταύρωσαν | tēn sarka estaurōsan | crucified the flesh | decisive, past, definitive act | ”crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” | Gal 5:24 — echoes 2:20’s “crucified with Christ,” applied to ongoing sanctification | ജഡത്തെ ക്രൂശിച്ചു | High [NEW, connects to crucified_with_christ core doctrine] |
Chapter 6
Chapter 6 develops Bearing One Another’s Burdens, closes with sowing/reaping, new creation, and Paul’s personal seal.
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Malayalam Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| bear one another’s burdens | ἀλλήλων τὰ βάρη βαστάζετε | allēlōn ta barē bastazete | carry the burdens of one another | mutual load-bearing | ”bear one another’s burdens” | Gal 6:2 — central to “Bearing One Another’s Burdens” doctrine, immediately following instruction on gently restoring a sinning believer | അന്യോന്യം ഭാരങ്ങള് ചുമക്കുവിന് | Medium [NEW, connects to baseline doctrine mutual_edification] |
| restore gently | καταρτίζετε…ἐν πνεύματι πραΰτητος | katartizete…en pneumati prautētos | restore/mend…in a spirit of gentleness | pastoral, restorative correction | ”restore gently,” “correct in a spirit of gentleness” | Gal 6:1 — the manner of confronting sin within the church, tempering discipline with humility | സൗമ്യതയോടെ യഥാസ്ഥാനത്താക്കുക | Low [NEW] |
| law of Christ | ὁ νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ | ho nomos tou Christou | the law of Christ | Christ’s own ethic of self-giving love, fulfilling but distinct from Mosaic law | ”the law of Christ” | Gal 6:2 — the governing ethic for burden-bearing; deliberately provocative phrase given the letter’s critique of ν́μος elsewhere | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ന്യായപ്രമാണം [REUSED root FROM BASELINE law] | Medium [NEW compound] — translator note recommended clarifying this is NOT a reintroduction of law as a means of justification, but Christ’s own love-ethic as the believer’s rule of life, consistent with Gal 5:14’s “the whole law is fulfilled in one word: love your neighbor” |
| sow and reap | σπείρῃ…θερίσει | speirē…therisei | sow…will reap | agricultural metaphor for moral cause-and-effect | ”sow…reap” | Gal 6:7–9 — sowing to the flesh reaps corruption; sowing to the Spirit reaps eternal life | വിതയ്ക്കുന്നു…കൊയ്യും | Low [NEW metaphor] |
| do not become weary in doing good | μὴ ἐκκακῶμεν…τὸ καλόν | mē ekkakōmen…to kalon | let us not grow weary…the good | perseverance exhortation | ”let us not grow weary in doing good” | Gal 6:9 | നന്മ ചെയ്യുന്നതില് മടുക്കാതിരിക്കുക | Low [NEW] |
| new creation | καινὴ κτίσις | kainē ktisis | new creation | a new order of being, not mere self-improvement | ”new creation,” “new creature” | Gal 6:15 — Paul’s climactic summary: “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but a new creation”; central to the “Circumcision and the New Creation” doctrine | പുതിയ സൃഷ്ടി | Critical [NEW] — must be understood as an ontological, Spirit-wrought new status/identity in Christ, not a self-help “new beginning” or moral self-reform; theologian review required given its climactic doctrinal weight, directly paralleling the letter’s core argument against circumcision-as-requirement |
| Israel of God | ὁ Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ Θεοῦ | ho Israēl tou Theou | the Israel of God | the true covenant people, defined by the new-creation standard just stated, not ethnicity or circumcision | ”the Israel of God” | Gal 6:16 | ദൈവത്തിന്റെ യിസ്രായേല് [REUSED FROM BASELINE israel] | Medium — connects to Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine; must not be read as displacing ethnic Israel but as defining the true covenant community by faith |
| boast | καυχάομαι / καύχημα | kauchaomai / kauchēma | to boast, boasting | pride, either sinful self-glory or legitimate glorying in Christ’s cross | ”boast,” “glory,” “pride” | Gal 6:4, 13–14 — Paul contrasts false boasting (in circumcision/flesh, or in others’ failures) with the only legitimate boast: the cross of Christ | പ്രശംസ / അഭിമാനിക്കുക | Medium [NEW] — context-sensitive: negative sense (self-glory) vs. Gal 6:14’s positive sense (glorying only in the cross); translator must track which sense is active per occurrence |
| cross of Christ | ὁ σταυρὸς τοῦ Χριστοῦ | ho stauros tou Christou | the cross of Christ | the crucifixion, source of both salvation and Paul’s own suffering/persecution | ”the cross of Christ” | Gal 6:12, 14 — the persecution-inducing, boast-worthy center of the gospel, echoing 2:19–20’s crucified-with-Christ doctrine | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ക്രൂശ് | Critical [NEW, connects directly to core doctrine crucified_with_christ] |
| brand-marks | τὰ στίγματα | ta stigmata | brand-marks, tattoo-marks | marks of ownership or suffering, often associated with slave-branding in the ancient world | ”marks,” “scars,” “brand-marks” | Gal 6:17 — Paul’s physical scars from persecution as evidence of his genuine service to Christ, his true “master” | മുറിവടയാളങ്ങള് | Medium [NEW] — CULTURAL NOTE: some South Indian Vaishnava Hindu traditions (chakrankitam/tapta-mudra-dharanam, hot branding with sacred symbols as a devotional rite) present a partial parallel worth flagging for native-speaker review, though this specific practice is more associated with broader South Indian Vaishnavism than Kerala folk religion specifically; ensure Paul’s meaning (scars from suffering for Christ, evidence of ownership by Christ) is not conflated with a ritual self-branding practice |
