Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — Titus (Koine Greek → Malayalam)

Source language: English (working from Koine Greek original) Destination language: Malayalam Curriculum: Titus 1–3 Core passage: Titus 2:11–3:8

Method and Governing Constraint

This analysis extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package for Malayalam. Every term already recorded in translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json (e.g. χάρις/grace = കൃപ, πίστις/faith = വിശ്വാസം, δικαιοσύνη/righteousness = നീതി, δικαίωσις/justification = നീതീകരണം, σωτηρία/salvation = രക്ഷ, πνεῦμα ἅγιον/Holy Spirit = പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്, θεός/God = ദൈവം, Ἰησοῦς Χριστός = യേശുക്രിസ്തു, πατήρ/Father = പിതാവ്, νόμος/law = ന്യായപ്രമാണം, ἁμαρτία/sin = പാപം, εἰρήνη/peace = സമാധാനം, ἀπόστολος/apostle = അപ്പോസ്തലന്‍) is reused exactly as recorded and is not re-litigated below except to note the specific verse it occurs in. New terms required for Titus are analyzed in full and proposed for addition to translation memory.

Titus is a short, three-chapter Pastoral Epistle. Per PRD mandate, the core passage (2:11–3:8) receives verse-by-verse treatment; the rest of the book (1:1–2:10, 3:9–15) receives chapter-section treatment of its load-bearing terms. No chapter is silently skipped.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE: TITUS 2:11–3:8

Titus 2:11

Greek: Ἐπεφάνη γὰρ ἡ χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ σωτήριος πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις Gloss: “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people”

Fieldἐπεφάνη (ἐπιφαίνω)χάριςσωτήριος
Transliterationepephanēcharissōtērios
Literal meaning”was made visible / shone forth upon”favor freely given”salvation-bringing” (adjective from σωτηρία)
Semantic rangeto appear, become visible, shine out — used of dawn/stars and of divine manifestationgift/favor without merit; also “thanks,” “gracious act”adjective form of “salvation”; bringing rescue/deliverance
English variantsappeared, has appeared, has been revealed, dawnedgrace, favor, giftbringing salvation, that brings salvation, saving
Contextual theological meaningGrace is not an abstract principle but a datable, historical event — the incarnation/first coming of Christ, echoed again in 3:4 (ἐπεφάνη) and as future hope in 2:13 (ἐπιφάνειαν). This “epiphany” theology is a distinctive structural feature of Titus.Reuse baseline term exactly: കൃപ (krupa).New derivative of the baseline രക്ഷ (raksha) root.
Malayalam renderingപ്രത്യക്ഷമായി / പ്രത്യക്ഷമായിരിക്കുന്നു (pratyakshamayi)കൃപ (krupa) — REUSED, exactരക്ഷ നൽകുന്ന (raksha nalkunna, “salvation-giving”)
Risk tierMedium (new)High — reused per baselineMedium (new)
NotesMust not be flattened to a generic “came” or “was shown”; the verb carries manifestation/revelation weight parallel to 2:13 and 3:4. Translator note: keep the same Malayalam verb for all three occurrences of ἐπιφαίνω-family words in Titus for consistency.Baseline concern applies: keep source of grace explicitly God’s own initiative, not a devotee’s accumulated merit.Build directly on the already-safe രക്ഷ root rather than inventing a new word.

Titus 2:12

Greek: παιδεύουσα ἡμᾶς ἵνα ἀρνησάμενοι τὴν ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας σωφρόνως καὶ δικαίως καὶ εὐσεβῶς ζήσωμεν ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι

Termπαιδεύουσαἀσέβειακοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίαςσωφρόνως / δικαίως / εὐσεβῶς
Transliterationpaideuousaasebeiakosmikas epithymiassōphronōs / dikaiōs / eusebōs
Literal meaning”training/disciplining/child-rearing""without reverence toward God""world-order desires""self-controlled / justly / godly-reverently”
Semantic rangeeducation, discipline, correction (sometimes with the connotation of a parent training a child, or chastisement)godlessness, impiety, irreverencedesires oriented to the present, passing world-systemself-mastery; just conduct; devout reverence toward God
English variantstrains, teaches, disciplines, instructsungodliness, impietyworldly passions, worldly lustssoberly/uprightly/godly; self-controlled, upright, godly
Contextual theological meaningThis is the doctrinal core of the curriculum’s first named doctrine, “Grace That Trains for Godly Living”: grace is not merely pardon but an active pedagogue reshaping conduct — the same grace that saves also disciples. The negative pole grace turns believers away from. The old-age value system being renounced. The positive triad describing the “new age” life grace produces — toward self, others, and God respectively (a widely noted three-part structure).
Malayalam renderingശിക്ഷണം നൽകുന്നു (shikshanam nalkunnu, “gives training/discipline”)അഭക്തി (abhakthi, “ungodliness”)ലൗകിക മോഹങ്ങൾ (laukika mohangal)ആത്മനിയന്ത്രണത്തോടെയും നീതിയോടെയും ദൈവഭക്തിയോടെയും
Risk tierHighMediumLowHigh (for ദൈവഭക്തി component)
Notesശിക്ഷണം (training/discipline) must be distinguished from ശിക്ഷ (punishment) alone — the word must carry a positive, formative sense, echoing a parent training a child, not penal retribution.Built from the same root family as ദൈവഭക്തി (godliness) below — see εὐσέβεια entry.Low risk; standard modern Malayalam usage.ദൈവഭക്തി uses ഭക്തി (bhakti), the term the baseline explicitly rejected for πίστις/faith due to Hindu devotional-tradition collision. Here it renders a genuinely distinct Greek word (εὐσέβεια, not πίστις), and pairing it with ദൈവ- (God-) mirrors the baseline’s own strategy for “spiritual gifts” (ആത്മീയവരങ്ങള്‍). Translator note required: ദൈവഭക്തി/godliness (reverent, obedient devotion evidenced in conduct) must never be substituted for വിശ്വാസം/faith (trust) — they are distinct Pauline categories that co-occur but must not collapse into synonyms.

Titus 2:13

Greek: προσδεχόμενοι τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

Transliterationmakarian elpidaepiphaneian tēs doxēsdoxēsmegalou theou kai sōtēros hēmōn Iēsou Christou
Literal meaning”blessed hope""appearing/manifestation of the glory""glory""of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”
Semantic rangeἐλπίς = confident expectation, not wishful uncertainty; μακάριος = blessed, happy, fortunatesecond, future ἐπιφάνεια — the second coming, distinct from the first ἐπιφάνεια of 2:11radiant honor/visible splendor of Godsee below
English variantsblessed hopeappearing of the glory, glorious appearinggloryour great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; God and our Savior Jesus Christ
Contextual theological meaningAssurance of Christ’s return, distinct from and complementary to the “already” of 2:11.Second coming; parallels 2:11’s first appearing — Titus structures its ethics between two epiphanies.REUSE baseline: മഹത്വം (mahatvam).CRITICAL: this is a primary New Testament proof-text for the full deity of Christ. In the Greek, one definite article (τοῦ) governs both nouns θεοῦ and σωτῆρος, joined by καί, with a single subsequent genitive (Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ) — grammatically, “God” and “Savior” are both titles of the one person, Jesus Christ, not two persons (Father and Son) in view.
Malayalam renderingഅനുഗ്രഹീതമായ പ്രത്യാശ (anugraheethamaya prathyasha, “blessed hope”)മഹത്വത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രത്യക്ഷത (mahatvathinte pratyakshatha)മഹത്വം (mahatvam) — REUSEDനമ്മുടെ വലിയ ദൈവവും രക്ഷകനുമായ യേശുക്രിസ്തു
Risk tierMedium (new: ἐλπίς)Medium (new)Medium — reused per baselineCritical
NotesSee ἐλπίς glossary entry.Consistency required with 2:11 and 3:4’s ἐπιφάνη — same rendering family.Malayalam lacks Greek’s definite-article apparatus, so the single-referent reading must be secured through word order and appositional construction: “വലിയ ദൈവവും രക്ഷകനുമായ യേശുക്രിസ്തു” (lit. “Jesus Christ, who is [our] great God and Savior”) keeps both titles bound to one grammatical subject. A rendering that inserts “ഉം” (and) in a way that could be read as two separate persons must be avoided. Flag for mandatory human theologian review; this is directly relevant to the curriculum’s Deity of Christ doctrine, inherited conceptually from the Romans baseline’s “sonship_of_christ” and “deity_of_christ” doctrine entries.

Titus 2:14

Greek: ὃς ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἵνα λυτρώσηται ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀνομίας καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἑαυτῷ λαὸν περιούσιον ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων

Literal meaning”gave himself on behalf of us""might redeem/ransom""lawlessness""might cleanse/purify""a people for [his own] possession""good works”
Semantic rangesubstitutionary self-giving; sacrificial deathto redeem by paying a price, buy back, release from bondagestate of being without/against law; moral anarchyritual or moral cleansingExodus 19:5 LXX echo — Israel as God’s treasured possession, now applied to the churchdeeds that are inherently good/beneficial, the recurring Titus refrain
English variantsgave himself for us, sacrificed himselfredeem, ransom, deliverlawlessness, wickedness, iniquitycleanse, purifya people for his own possession, peculiar people, treasured possessiongood deeds, good works
Contextual theological meaningSubstitutionary atonement grounding the entire “grace that trains” ethic — ethics flows from what Christ did, not the reverse.Redemption is a distinct soteriological category from justification/salvation already in translation memory — the picture of a purchase/ransom, not merely a verdict. The condition redeemed from.Purification unto ownership, echoing Old Testament covenant-people language.Establishes continuity between Israel as covenant people and the church as covenant people — directly relevant to the baseline’s “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” doctrine.First occurrence of the book’s central ethical refrain (also 2:7, 3:1, 3:8, 3:14; negatively contrasted in 1:16 and 3:5).

NotesPreserve substitutionary force; do not soften to a generic “helped us.”New term for translation memory — distinct from രക്ഷ (rescue) and നീതീകരണം (forensic declaration); emphasizes a price paid to release from bondage.Do not use any ധര്‍മ്മ- compound (e.g. അധര്‍മ്മം) for “lawlessness” — this would reintroduce the same dharma-cognate risk the baseline forbids for righteousness/law. നിയമലംഘനം (built from നിയമം, ordinary “law/rule,” + ലംഘനം, “violation”) avoids the collision entirely.Distinguish from ritual/ceremonial purity; context (redemption unto ownership) must carry the moral-relational sense.New doctrinal term bridging Old and New Testament covenant-people theology; pairs conceptually with the baseline’s ജനതകള്‍ (gentiles) and unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles doctrine.Central refrain term for this curriculum. Must be kept sharply distinct in translation from the ἔργα rejected as a basis for salvation in 3:5 (see below) — same Greek root (ἔργον) serving two different theological functions (works as fruit vs. works as false ground) is the single highest-value nuance for reviewers to catch across this whole book.

Titus 2:15

Greek: Ταῦτα λάλει καὶ παρακάλει καὶ ἔλεγχε μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς μηδείς σου περιφρονείτω

Termλάλει / παρακάλει / ἔλεγχεἐπιταγῆςπεριφρονείτω

Semantic rangeteach and declare; encourage/urge; correct/reprove with authoritybinding instruction, authoritative orderto think around/beneath, treat with contempt
English variantsspeak, exhort, rebuke; with all authority; let no one disregard youauthority, commanddespise, disregard, look down on
Contextual theological meaningA three-verb ministry mandate for Titus personally — teaching authority undergirds sound doctrine and good works, the curriculum’s third named doctrine.Ministerial authority derived from the gospel, not personal status.Guards the teacher’s authority against dismissal, relevant to the “Qualifications for Elders” and “Sound Doctrine” doctrines together.
Malayalam renderingസംസാരിക്കുക, പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക (baseline reused), ശാസിക്കുകഅധികാരത്തോടെ (adhikarathode)ആരും നിന്നെ അവഗണിക്കരുത്
Risk tierLow/MediumLowLow
Notesπαρακάλει reuses the baseline exhort entry (പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക) exactly, in its “build up/encourage” sense; ἔλεγχε is new — ശാസിക്കുക (rebuke/reprove) is the standard Malayalam Bible verb, distinct in force from mere encouragement.

Titus 3:1

English variantsrulers and authorities, governing authoritiesbe subject to, submit toobey, be obedient togood deed/work
Contextual theological meaningFoundational text for “Submission to Authority” doctrine, closely paralleling Romans 13:1–7 (already flagged for native-speaker review in the baseline AI instructions).Voluntary, gospel-motivated submission, not coerced servility.Distinguished from ὑποτάσσω by its specific civic-obedience sense.Reinforces the good-works refrain in a civic context.

Risk tierMediumHighMediumHigh (reused)
NotesStandard civic-authority term, low ambiguity in itself.Grounded risk specific to this curriculum: Kerala’s own social history includes rigid historical caste stratification, and — as the baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine entry already documents — this stratification has an internal-church echo between the historic Syrian Christian community and more recent Dalit-convert communities. Submission-to-authority teaching (here; also 2:5 wives, 2:9 slaves) must be translated so that it cannot be co-opted to reinforce caste-linked subordination patterns; contextual teaching notes, not softened translation, should carry this caution. Flag for human theologian review alongside the Romans 13 precedent.

Semantic rangemindless, unpersuadable, deceived/wanderingbondage to appetite — same δοῦλος root reused elsewhere for Paul’s self-designation, here negativelyactive ill-will; resentment of others’ goodmutual hostility
Contextual theological meaningThe pre-conversion state Paul explicitly includes himself (“we too”) within — grounding grace’s humility; sets up the sharp turn in 3:4.Contrasts sharply with the positive δοῦλος θεοῦ of Titus 1:1, showing the same root word describing bondage to sin vs. glad service to God — an important literary/theological pairing for teaching.Sets up the reversal into ἀγάπη/φιλανθρωπία in 3:4.

Titus 3:4

Greek: ὅτε δὲ ἡ χρηστότης καὶ ἡ φιλανθρωπία τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ ἐπεφάνη

Termχρηστότηςφιλανθρωπίασωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦἐπεφάνη

Literal meaning”kindness, goodness""love for mankind""God our Savior""appeared” (see 2:11)
Semantic rangebenevolent goodness, kindness in actionaffection/benevolence directed at humanity generally
Contextual theological meaningTogether, χρηστότης and φιλανθρωπία form the motive behind salvation, contrasted with the vice-list of 3:3 — grace’s initiative, not human merit.σωτήρ applied to God the Father here (contrast 2:13/3:6 applying it to Christ) — Titus applies “Savior” fluidly to both Father and Son, a subtle but important trinitarian datum.Same verb as 2:11 — the “second epiphany” of this section, of kindness rather than of grace per se; consistent rendering required.
Malayalam renderingദയ (daya)മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹം (manushyasneham)നമ്മുടെ രക്ഷകനായ ദൈവംപ്രത്യക്ഷമായി (REUSE from 2:11)
Risk tierLowMediumHighMedium (reused)
NotesNewly coined compound (മനുഷ്യ + സ്നേഹം); low ambiguity in Malayalam but should be flagged as a new glossary term.Flag: translators must not read this as implying “Savior” is exclusively a Father-title or exclusively a Christ-title; Titus applies it to both, consistent with the deity of Christ established in 2:13.

Titus 3:5

Greek: οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς διὰ λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας καὶ ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου

This is the curriculum’s doctrinal center of gravity (“Salvation by Grace not Works” and “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit”).

Termἔργων … ἐν δικαιοσύνῃἔλεοςἔσωσενλουτροῦπαλιγγενεσίαςἀνακαινώσεωςπνεύματος ἁγίου

Literal meaning”works [done] in righteousness""mercy""he saved""washing/bath""new-becoming / new genesis""renewal, making new again""Holy Spirit”
Semantic rangeworks of righteous conduct, human moral achievementcompassion responding to need/misery, distinct in nuance from grace (which responds to unworthiness)aorist of σῴζω, “saved”literal washing/bathing; by metonymy, baptisma decisive, once-for-all re-origination of life; the only two NT occurrences are here and Matthew 19:28 (of cosmic restoration)ongoing renewing work, a process wordREUSE baseline exactly
English variantsworks of righteousness, righteous deeds we had donemercy, compassionsavedwashing, bathregeneration, new birth, rebirthrenewal, renewingHoly Spirit
Contextual theological meaningThe explicit works rejected as the basis of salvation — this is Paul’s sharpest “not by works” statement outside Romans/Ephesians, and must be kept unmistakably distinct in translation from the fruit-works (καλὰ ἔργα) celebrated elsewhere in this same book (2:14, 3:1, 3:8, 3:14).The compassionate motive for salvation, alongside χρηστότης/φιλανθρωπία (3:4) and χάρις (3:7).REUSE baseline രക്ഷ verb form.Denotes the ordinance of baptism (by metonymy) as the outward sign accompanying the inward reality of regeneration; Kerala’s Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant/Evangelical traditions hold differing views on baptismal efficacy, and the translation itself must not silently resolve that internal debate. The single highest-priority new Critical term in this curriculum. See dedicated note below.Renewal is the Spirit’s continuing work, distinct from but joined to the once-for-all παλιγγενεσία.

Risk tierCriticalMedium (new)Critical — reused per baselineHigh (new)CRITICAL (new)Medium (new)Critical — reused per baseline
NotesSee dedicated cross-reference note under 2:14 above and in the glossary: this ἔργα must read, unmistakably, as the rejected basis of salvation — the mirror image, not a synonym, of the celebrated καλὰ ἔργα (good works) refrain. Reviewer checklist item.Distinct nuance from grace/χάρις: mercy answers misery, grace answers unworthiness; both true here, neither should absorb the other in translation.Render literally (“washing”); do not resolve the sacramental-efficacy question in the translation itself — leave that to teaching notes/footnotes, consistent with the baseline’s practice (cf. “intercession” note on Marian/saints intercession as a teaching point, not a correction). This is the parallel case, for a new doctrine, to the baseline’s Critical resurrection/incarnation entries. παλιγγενεσία (“new becoming”) sits in exactly the same semantic neighborhood — “again/anew” + “birth/becoming” — that produces the baseline’s forbidden പുനര്‍ജന്മം (reincarnation) for resurrection. A generically-trained AI system, or even a careful human translator reaching for the most “natural” Malayalam compound for “new birth,” could easily produce പുനർജനനം (punar-jananam, built on പുനർ, “again/re-”), which sits dangerously close to പുനർജന്മം (punar-janmam, reincarnation) both in form and in root meaning. RECOMMENDATION: use നവജനനം (nava-jananam, “new birth,” built on നവ, “new,” never on പുനർ, “again”) — this preserves “new birth” precisely while structurally avoiding any “again/re-” root shared with the reincarnation term. This should be treated with the same severity as the baseline’s incarnation/resurrection forbidden-substitution rules: NEVER പുനർജനനം or പുനർജന്മം for παλιγγενεσία; ALWAYS നവജനനം. Mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence.Builds on the established Reformation-era Malayalam usage of നവീകരണം for institutional/spiritual renewal (the Malayalam term for the Protestant Reformation is നവീകരണം), giving it positive Christian institutional resonance rather than a competing-religion association.

Semantic rangeto pour out liquid; used elsewhere (Acts 2:17-18, quoting Joel) of the Spirit’s outpouringabundance, generosity of measure
Contextual theological meaningDeliberate echo of Pentecost’s Spirit-outpouring language, tying Titus 3:5’s renewal to the same Spirit poured out at Pentecost.σωτήρ applied to Christ, alongside its application to the Father in 3:4 — the two together complete the trinitarian pattern of this passage.

Semantic rangeforensic declaration of right standing (same root as Romans’ δικαίωσις)one who receives an inheritance; legal/familial statusconfident expectation of unending resurrection life
Contextual theological meaningDirect echo of the Romans doctrine of justification; the aorist passive participle marks a completed, received status, not an ongoing process.Connects to the baseline’s adoption doctrine (ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം, “full son-status with complete inheritance rights”) — Titus 3:7 supplies the inheritance half of that picture.Bookends the letter with 1:2’s identical phrase, forming an inclusio around the whole doctrine of salvation in Titus.

Literal meaning”faithful/trustworthy is the word/saying""to insist confidently, affirm strongly""to devote oneself to/take the lead in good works""those who have believed/trusted God""profitable, beneficial”
Semantic rangea fixed formula distinctive to the Pastoral Epistles (recurring in 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy) marking an authoritative summary statementstrong, confident assertionto be devoted to, to practice diligently, sometimes “to lead/direct”perfect participle — a settled, present state resulting from past faithuseful, advantageous
Contextual theological meaningCloses the core passage by re-affirming, as a fixed apostolic formula, everything just stated about grace, regeneration, and justification — and pivots immediately back to the book’s good-works refrain, keeping grace and good works bound together without confusing their order.Final occurrence of the καλὰ ἔργα refrain in this section — the fruit, not the root, of the salvation just described in 3:4–7.Reuses baseline πίστις/faith family.

NotesFlag for consistency: this exact formula recurs in the Pastoral Epistles (1 Tim 1:15, 3:1, 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11); if this curriculum series continues into 1–2 Timothy, this Malayalam rendering must be locked into translation memory for cross-document consistency, per the baseline’s stated cross-document consistency rules.Reviewer checklist: confirm this is rendered so as to clearly continue (not repeat) the fruit-of-salvation sense established at 2:14, not the rejected-basis sense of 3:5.

PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK

Chapter 1 (Titus 1:1–16)

Titus 1:1–4 (salutation) and 1:5–9 (elder qualifications) and 1:10–16 (false teachers) each introduce load-bearing vocabulary not present in the core passage.

ἐπίσκοπος (1:7)episkoposoverseerthe same office as πρεσβύτερος in this passage (v. 5 and v. 7 describe one office), functional oversight/care, not yet a distinct higher orderoverseer, bishopDistinct, curriculum-specific risk: Kerala’s Orthodox, Catholic, and other episcopal traditions use “bishop” (ബിഷപ്പ്/മെത്രാൻ) for a metropolitan/diocesan office far more exalted than Titus 1’s local congregational overseer. Using ബിഷപ്പ് or മെത്രാൻ here would import centuries of later ecclesiastical hierarchy into a text that identifies this office with the local “elder,” directly relevant to church-polity debates.മേൽവിചാരകൻ (melvicharakan, lit. “one who watches/cares over”)High

Chapter 1 vice-list note (1:7–10: αὐθάδης, ὀργίλος, πάροινος, πλήκτης, αἰσχροκερδής, ματαιολόγος, φρεναπάτης): standard Malayalam vocabulary exists for each (e.g. ദുരഭിമാനി, കോപിഷ്ഠൻ, മദ്യപ്രിയൻ, അക്രമകാരി, ദ്രവ്യാഗ്രഹി); Low risk collectively — no significant syncretism or doctrinal-collision concern, grouped here rather than itemized individually.

Coverage Statement

Every chapter of Titus (1, 2, 3) has been analyzed for load-bearing theological vocabulary. The core passage (2:11–3:8) received full verse-by-verse treatment. Titus 1:1–2:10 and 3:9–3:15 received chapter-section treatment. Sections introducing only proper names or low-risk vice/virtue clusters (Titus 1:7–10 vice list; 3:2 virtue list; 3:12–13 greetings; 3:15 benediction) are explicitly noted as such rather than silently omitted.
