Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Mark 1–16 (English → Malayalam)
How to Use This Glossary
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md across the full Gospel of Mark, chapters 1–16. It is organized by doctrinal category. Each entry records:
- English term
- Malayalam rendering (script) and transliteration
- Risk tier (Critical / High / Medium / Low, per the baseline
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonframework) - Status:
REUSE(already fixed in the baseline Romanstranslation_memory.json— rendering copied exactly, no deviation permitted) orNEW(introduced by Mark; proposed for addition to translation memory) - Primary Mark references
- Note — the specific grounded reason for the risk assignment
Terms marked REUSE must carry forward the baseline malayalam_term exactly as recorded in the Romans package; this glossary does not re-litigate their risk tier, only confirms Mark-specific occurrence.
Category: Christology — Titles and Person of Christ
| English Term | Malayalam | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Primary Mark Refs | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jesus | യേശു | yeshu | Critical | REUSE | throughout | Per baseline; never ഈശോ or other form in this register. |
| Christ / Messiah | ക്രിസ്തു | kristu | Critical | REUSE | 1:1, 8:29, 9:41, 14:61 | Per baseline; Peter’s confession (8:29) is the narrative hinge of the book. |
| Son of God | ദൈവപുത്രന് | daivaputhran | Critical | REUSE | 1:1, 3:11, 5:7, 15:39 | Per baseline; forms inclusio between 1:1 and the centurion’s confession 15:39. Never ദേവപുത്രന്. |
| Son of Man | മനുഷ്യപുത്രന് | manushyaputhran | Critical | NEW | 2:10, 2:28, 8:31, 8:38, 9:9, 9:31, 10:33, 10:45, 13:26, 14:21, 14:41, 14:62 | Mark’s dominant Christological title, fusing Daniel 7’s exalted figure with a suffering servant; central vehicle of the Messianic Secret. No competing common Malayalam usage, but doctrinally the single highest-frequency Critical term in the book — requires a standing translator note on first occurrence (2:10). |
| Lord | കര്ത്താവ് | karthavu | Critical | REUSE | e.g. 1:3, 2:28, 5:19, 11:3, 12:36-37 | Per baseline. |
| beloved Son | പ്രിയപുത്രന് | priyaputhran | Critical | NEW | 1:11, 9:7 | Divine voice’s direct confirmation of Sonship; must be read in continuity with, not as separate from, ദൈവപുത്രന്. |
| transfigured | രൂപാന്തരപ്പെട്ടു | roopantharappettu | Critical | NEW | 9:2-8 | A unique, once-for-all unveiling of already-possessed divine glory — must never be framed as, or share vocabulary with, an avatar-style repeatable divine descent (cf. baseline’s incarnation caution re: അവതാരം). |
| I am (formal self-disclosure) | ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു | njan aakunnu | Critical | NEW | 14:62 (High at 6:50) | Jesus’ explicit self-identification before the Sanhedrin; the legal cause of the crucifixion charge. Distinguish from the more ambiguous 6:50 occurrence (flagged High, not Critical, there). |
| incarnation (Christological background term, cf. “flesh,” Son born of woman) | മാംസധാരണം | mamsadharanam | Critical | REUSE | conceptual background to 1:1, 6:3 | Per baseline; never അവതാരം. Mark does not use a single Greek term equivalent to this, but the doctrine underlies the book’s Christology and the baseline term applies wherever incarnation is discussed in teaching material. |
Category: Kingdom of God
| English Term | Malayalam | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Primary Mark Refs | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdom of God | ദൈവരാജ്യം | daivarajyam | Medium (per baseline) | REUSE | 1:15, 4:11, 4:26-32, 9:1, 9:47, 10:14-15, 10:23-25, 12:34, 14:25, 15:43 | Per baseline: God’s sovereign reign, not territorial/political. |
| has come near / has drawn near | സമീപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു | sameepichirikkunnu | High | NEW | 1:15 | Must carry both “imminent” and “already breaking in” force (inaugurated eschatology); anchors the curriculum’s “Kingdom of God Breaking In” doctrine. |
| mystery of the kingdom | ദൈവരാജ്യത്തിന്റെ രഹസ്യം | daivarajyathinte rahasyam | High | NEW | 4:11 | Must not be read as esoteric/occult privileged knowledge; disclosed to all who respond in faith, not a spiritual elite. |
| the elect / chosen | തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടവര് | thiranjedukkappettavar | High | NEW (shares root with REUSE concept) | 13:20, 13:22, 13:27 | Parallel to baseline’s election term (ദൈവത്തിന്റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്); never rendered with fate/karma vocabulary. |
Category: The Cross, Suffering, and Ransom (Atonement)
| English Term | Malayalam | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Primary Mark Refs | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ransom | മറുവില | maruvila | Critical | NEW | 10:45 | THE doctrinal anchor term for “The Ransom for Many.” Must retain the commercial/legal “price paid to free a captive” sense; never softened to generic sacrifice/gift. Highest-priority term for theologian review in this curriculum. |
| for / instead of (substitution) | …ക്കു പകരം | …kku pakaram | Critical | NEW | 10:45 (“ἀντὶ πολλῶν”) | Must preserve substitutionary “in place of” force, echoing Isaiah 53’s “many”; not softened to mere benefit-language. |
| must (divine necessity) | (necessity construction, e.g. -ണം) | — | High | NEW | 8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34 | Conveys δεῖ — God’s determined plan, not fatalism; anchors “The Necessity of the Cross.” Avoid any construction resembling വിധി (fate). |
| suffer | കഷ്ടം അനുഭവിക്കുക | kashtam anubhavikkuka | High | NEW | 8:31, 9:12, 9:31, 10:33-34 | Render identically at all three passion predictions for cross-document consistency. |
| cross | ക്രൂശ് | kroosh | Critical | NEW | 8:34, 10:21, 15:21-32 | Established, unambiguous term; risk is doctrinal softening (domesticating “take up the cross” into generic hardship), not lexical confusion. |
| crucify | ക്രൂശിക്കുക | kroshikkuka | Critical | NEW | 15:13-27 | Shares root with ക്രൂശ്; render consistently. |
| life / soul (given up) | ജീവന് | jeevan | Medium | NEW | 8:35-37, 10:45 | NOT ആത്മാവ് (reserved for Holy Spirit / risks ātman associations); render as whole-self “life,” matching Hebrew-holistic sense of ψυχή. |
| blood of the covenant | ഉടമ്പടിയുടെ രക്തം | udampadiyude raktham | High | NEW (ഉടമ്പടി REUSE) | 14:24 | ഉടമ്പടി per baseline; രക്തം (blood) new but low-ambiguity; compound doctrinal claim requires careful catechesis. |
| betray / hand over | ഒറ്റിക്കൊടുക്കുക | ottikkodukkuka | High | NEW | 3:19, 9:31, 10:33, 14:10-21, 14:41-44 | Single Greek verb (παραδίδωμι) spans both Judas’ betrayal and the Servant’s divine “handing over” (Isaiah 53 echo); may require context-sensitive variation. |
| temple curtain torn | തിരശ്ശീല കീറിപ്പോയി | thirasheela keerippoyi | High | NEW | 15:38 | Signals Christ’s death opening access to God; connect to Ransom doctrine’s result in teaching notes. |
| Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani | എലോയീ, എലോയീ, ലമ്മാ ശബക്താനി | eloyi, eloyi, lamma shabakthaani | Critical | NEW (Aramaic, preserved) | 15:34 | Preserve untranslated per Mark’s own practice, immediately followed by the supplied translation; never silently paraphrased away. |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| servant | ശുശ്രൂഷകന് | shushrooshakan | High | NEW | 9:35, 10:43 | Must not be narrowed to the later formal ecclesial office (“deacon”); Jesus describes a disposition of voluntary humility for every disciple. |
| slave | ദാസന് | dasan | High | NEW | 10:44 | Grounded Kerala-specific risk: historical association with bonded/lower-caste agricultural labor under Kerala’s landlord system; must be read as Christ’s voluntary self-description of costly self-giving, never as endorsement of historical caste-servitude structures. |
| to serve / to be served | ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കുക / ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കപ്പെടുക | shushrooshikkuka / shushrooshikkappeduka | Medium | NEW | 10:45 | Verbal form sharing the ശുശ്രൂഷകന് root; Jesus grounds his own command in his own action. |
| lord it over (negative) | കര്ത്തൃത്വം കാണിക്കുക / ഭരിക്കുക | karthruthvam kaanikkuka / bharikkuka | High | NEW | 10:42 | Shares root with കര്ത്താവ് (Lord, Critical); must be clearly distinguished from Christ’s positive saving Lordship — mandatory translator note if root-cognate retained. |
| Teacher (address) | ഗുരോ / ഗുരു | guro / guru | High | NEW | 10:35, 4:38, 9:5, and passim | Natural Malayalam address term for Jesus-as-teacher, but carries Hindu guru-disciple bhakti associations; must be held distinct from the baseline’s rejection of ഗുരു for “apostle.” |
Category: The Messianic Secret

| rebuke / silence (command) | ശാസിക്കുക | shasikkuka | High | NEW | 1:25, 1:34, 3:12, 8:30 | First of Mark’s “silencing” verb family; render consistently across occurrences so the motif is trackable. |
| strictly charged | കര്ശനമായി കല്പ്പിക്കുക | karshanamayi kalpikkuka | High | NEW | 5:43, 7:36, 9:9 | Same motif-family as ശാസിക്കുക; consistent rendering required. |

| your faith has saved/healed you | വിശ്വാസം…സൗഖ്യമാക്കി/രക്ഷിച്ചു | vishwasam…saukhyamaakki/rakshichu | High | NEW (dual with REUSE രക്ഷ) | 5:34, 10:52 | σῴζω’s dual heal/save sense; connect explicitly to രക്ഷ (baseline, High) in teaching notes. |
| mercy (cry for) | കരുണ | karuna | Medium | NEW | 10:47-48 | Shared pan-Indian religious vocabulary (also Buddhist ethical term); low risk here as ordinary compassionate-appeal usage. |

| unclean spirit | അശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് | ashudhathmavu | High | NEW | 1:23-27, 3:11, 5:1-13, 6:7, 7:25, 9:25 | Keep lexically/conceptually distinct from പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്; ensure not flattened into generic folk “ghost” category. |
| demon | ഭൂതം | bhootham | High | NEW | 5:1-20, 7:29-30, 9:38 | Collides with Kerala folk-belief/possession-exorcism vocabulary; must be anchored to Mark’s specific claim of a personal evil spirit defeated by Christ’s total authority. |

| Corban | കൊര്ബാന് (see note) | korban | Critical | NEW | 7:11 | Near-homophone of കുർബാന (qurbana), the Eucharist term in Malayalam Christian liturgy. Strongly recommend a descriptive rendering plus footnote rather than a bare transliteration; mandatory translator note if transliterated. |

| Abba, Father | അബ്ബാ പിതാവേ | abba pithaave | Medium | REUSE (both elements) | 14:36 | Per baseline; here Jesus’ own Gethsemane prayer-cry, distinct nuance from Romans 8:15’s description of the Spirit’s work in believers. |

| all creation | സകല സൃഷ്ടിയോടും | sakala srishtiyodum | Medium | NEW | 16:15 | സൃഷ്ടി is shared vocabulary with Hindu cosmological “srishti”; comparatively low risk as the only natural Malayalam term, understood specifically as God’s created order per Genesis. |
Category: Old Testament Background and Covenant
| English Term | Malayalam | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Primary Mark Refs | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| covenant | ഉടമ്പടി | udampadi | Medium | REUSE | 14:24 | Per baseline. |

Critical Risk Terms
Justification
Approved rendering: നീതീകരണം
Transliteration: neetheekaranam
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ക്ഷമ ലഭിക്കല്
Inherited from Romans package. Retained for teaching-note contrast with Mark’s simpler ക്ഷമിക്കുക (forgive, 2:5-10): forgiveness of a specific sin-debt in Mark must not be conflated with the fuller forensic declared-righteous verdict of justification, though both belong to the same Salvation doctrine family.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ്
Transliteration: uyirthezhunnelppu
Doctrine: Resurrection Hope and the Life to Come
Rejected alternatives: പുനര്ജന്മം
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Mark’s Sadducee debate (12:18-27) and climactically at the empty tomb (16:6); background to the three passion predictions (8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34) each of which foretells rising after three days. Never പുനര്ജന്മം.
Lord
Approved rendering: കര്ത്താവ്
Transliteration: karthavu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout Mark (e.g., 1:3, 2:28, 5:19, 11:3, 12:36-37). Mark 10:42’s negative κατακυριεύω (‘lord it over’) shares this root and must be clearly distinguished from Christ’s own exclusive, saving Lordship — see lord_it_over entry below.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവപുത്രന്
Transliteration: daivaputhran
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Rejected alternatives: ദേവപുത്രന്
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Forms Mark’s deliberate narrative inclusio between the opening confession (1:1) and the Gentile centurion’s confession at the cross (15:39), also occurring at 3:11, 5:7, 9:7 (as ‘beloved Son’). Never ദേവപുത്രന്. Note: some ancient manuscripts omit ‘Son of God’ at 1:1 — a textual-critical footnoting matter, not a rendering choice.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: മാംസധാരണം
Transliteration: mamsadharanam
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Rejected alternatives: അവതാരം
Inherited from Romans package. Mark contains no single Greek term equivalent to this, but the doctrine underlies the whole Gospel’s Christology (1:1, 6:3) and must govern any teaching-material discussion of Jesus’ human origin. Never അവതാരം — this caution extends directly to the Transfiguration (9:2-8), which must not be framed as an avatar-style repeatable divine descent.
Messiah
Approved rendering: ക്രിസ്തു
Transliteration: kristu
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Inherited from Romans package. Peter’s confession, ‘You are the Christ’ (8:29), is the narrative and theological hinge of the whole Gospel, immediately followed by the first passion prediction and immediately silenced (Messianic Secret). Also at 1:1, 9:41, 14:61.
Jesus
Approved rendering: യേശു
Transliteration: yeshu
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Original: Ἰησοῦς / יֵשׁוּעַ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. The standard modern Malayalam Bible (Satyavedapustakam) form, used throughout Mark. ഈശോ remains a legitimate Syriac-liturgical heritage alternative but is not used in this curriculum’s Bible-study register.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്
Transliteration: parishudhathmavu
Doctrine: Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ബ്രഹ്മം, പരമാത്മാവ്
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Descends on Jesus at his baptism (1:10) and is the subject of the unforgivable-sin warning (3:28-30, see blasphemy_against_holy_spirit below). Never ബ്രഹ്മം or പരമാത്മാവ്.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: ആരോപിതനീതി
Transliteration: aropithaneethi
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: സമ്പാദിച്ച നീതി
Inherited from Romans package. No direct Mark occurrence; retained for cross-curriculum consistency and as background contrast to Mark 10:17-27’s rich man narrative (eternal life not attainable by human achievement).
Son Of Man
Approved rendering: മനുഷ്യപുത്രന്
Transliteration: manushyaputhran
Doctrine: Son of Man Christology
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
Mark’s dominant Christological self-designation, fusing the generic Semitic idiom ‘a human being’ with the specific apocalyptic Daniel 7:13-14 title of a figure given everlasting dominion. Occurs at 2:10, 2:28, 8:31, 8:38, 9:9, 9:31, 10:33, 10:45, 13:26, 14:21, 14:41, 14:62 — the highest-frequency Critical term in the book and the primary vehicle of the Messianic Secret. No competing common Malayalam usage (low lexical risk), but requires a standing translator note at first occurrence (2:10) explaining the Daniel 7 background, reinforced at 8:31, 10:45, 13:26, 14:62.
Beloved Son
Approved rendering: പ്രിയപുത്രന്
Transliteration: priyaputhran
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Original: ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός
Category: Christology
The Father’s direct verbal confirmation of Jesus’ unique divine Sonship at the Baptism (1:11) and Transfiguration (9:7). Must be read in direct continuity with ദൈവപുത്രന്, never as a separate or lesser title of mere affection.
Transfigured
Approved rendering: രൂപാന്തരപ്പെട്ടു
Transliteration: roopantharappettu
Doctrine: The Transfiguration and the Unveiled Glory of Christ
Rejected alternatives: അവതാരം-adjacent framing (repeatable divine descent)
Original: μετεμορφώθη
Category: Christology
A visible, temporary unveiling of Jesus’ hidden divine glory before select witnesses (9:2-8). Must never be rendered or explained in a way suggesting a Hindu avatar-style repeatable divine manifestation/descent; this is a unique, once-for-all unveiling of glory the eternal Son already possesses, not a new descent — cf. the baseline’s incarnation caution regarding അവതാരം.
I Am Formal
Approved rendering: ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു
Transliteration: njan aakunnu
Doctrine: The Passion and Death of Christ
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology
Jesus’ explicit, formal self-testimony before the high priest (14:61-62), affirming he is the Christ, the Son of the Blessed, immediately followed by Son of Man/coming-with-clouds language. The clearest self-disclosure in the entire Gospel and the direct legal cause of the crucifixion (blasphemy) charge. Same Malayalam surface form as i_am_ambiguous (6:50); segment-cache logic must distinguish the two occurrences by risk tier, not by lexical choice, since Mark himself uses identical Greek. Mandatory human theologian review.
Ransom
Approved rendering: മറുവില
Transliteration: maruvila
Doctrine: The Ransom for Many
Rejected alternatives: ബലി (sacrifice/offering — loses the specific commercial exchange sense and carries Hindu ritual-sacrifice associations), generic ‘gift’ or ‘offering’ paraphrase
Original: λύτρον
Category: Atonement
The price paid to release a slave or captive; in Mark 10:45, the price of Christ’s own life liberating ‘the many’ from bondage to sin and death, echoing Isaiah 53’s Suffering Servant. THE doctrinal anchor for ‘The Ransom for Many’ and the single highest-priority term for human theologian review in the entire curriculum. Must never be softened into generic sacrifice, offering, or gift language.
Substitution For Many
Approved rendering: അനേകര്ക്കു പകരം
Transliteration: anekarkku pakaram
Doctrine: The Ransom for Many
Rejected alternatives: അനേകര്ക്കുവേണ്ടി (for the benefit of many — loses the substitutionary ‘in place of’ force)
Original: ἀντὶ πολλῶν
Category: Atonement
‘In place of/in exchange for many’ — ἀντί marks substitution/exchange (stronger than ὑπέρ, ‘on behalf of’); ‘many’ echoes Isaiah 53:11-12 LXX. Must preserve the substitutionary force; a softened ‘for the sake of many’ reads as mere benefit-language and loses the exchange sense central to the Suffering Servant identification.
Cross
Approved rendering: ക്രൂശ്
Transliteration: kroosh
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: σταυρός
Category: Atonement
The Roman execution stake/beam; metaphorically, the call to self-denying discipleship (8:34, 10:21, 15:21-32). Established, unambiguous Malayalam Christian term with no competing religious usage; risk is doctrinal softening — must not domesticate ‘take up his cross’ into a generic metaphor for hardship.
Crucify
Approved rendering: ക്രൂശിക്കുക
Transliteration: kroshikkuka
Doctrine: The Passion and Death of Christ
Original: σταυρόω
Category: Atonement
To crucify, to fix to a cross — the specific Roman execution method (15:13-27). Shares its root with ക്രൂശ്; render consistently across all Passion-narrative occurrences.
Eloi Lama Sabachthani
Approved rendering: എലോയീ, എലോയീ, ലമ്മാ ശബക്താനി
Transliteration: eloyi, eloyi, lamma shabakthaani
Doctrine: The Passion and Death of Christ
Rejected alternatives: silent paraphrase omitting the Aramaic cry
Original: Ἐλωΐ ἐλωΐ λαμὰ σαβαχθανί
Category: Atonement
Aramaic, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ (quoting Psalm 22:1) — Jesus’ cry of dereliction from the cross (15:34), which Mark himself immediately translates. Preserve the Aramaic transliteration exactly as Mark does, immediately followed by Mark’s own supplied translation; never omit or silently paraphrase away the untranslated cry itself.
Corban
Approved rendering: കൊര്ബാന് (descriptive rendering preferred; mandatory distinguishing note if transliterated)
Transliteration: korban
Doctrine: Heart Purity versus Ritual Defilement
Rejected alternatives: bare transliteration without mandatory distinguishing note
Original: κορβάν
Category: Church
A vow dedicating assets as an offering to God, used by some Pharisees to evade the commandment to support aging parents (7:11). KERALA-SPECIFIC COLLISION: the transliteration കൊര്ബാന് is strikingly close in form to കുർബാന (qurbana), the Saint Thomas Christian and wider Malayalam Christian liturgical term for the Holy Eucharist. A clarifying descriptive rendering (e.g., ‘ദൈവത്തിനു നേര്ച്ചയായി സമര്പ്പിച്ചത്’) with an explanatory footnote is strongly recommended over a bare transliteration; if transliterated, a mandatory translator note distinguishing it from കുർബാന is required. Recommend theologian sign-off on final phrasing before Phase 2 begins.
Blasphemy Against Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനെതിരെയുള്ള ദൈവദൂഷണം
Transliteration: parishudhathmaviനetireyulla daivadooshanam
Doctrine: Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ordinary ‘disrespect’ or ‘insult’ framing
Original: βλασφημία εἰς τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον
Category: Sin
The unforgivable sin — attributing the Spirit’s clearly divine work to Satan (3:28-30). Combines two Critical terms (പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് + ദൈവദൂഷണം). Must not be softened into ordinary ‘disrespect’; the unforgivable-sin doctrinal weight must be unmistakable. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: സുവിശേഷം
Transliteration: suvisesham
Doctrine: Gospel of Jesus Christ
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Established across all Malayalam Christian traditions. Mark 1:1, ‘the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,’ is Mark’s programmatic thesis, structurally parallel to Romans 1:16-17, and must be rendered identically everywhere quoted across curriculum documents (Mark 1:1, 1:14-15, 8:35, 10:29, 13:10, 14:9, 16:15).
Grace
Approved rendering: കൃപ
Transliteration: krupa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: പുണ്യം
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Mark 10:17-27 (the rich man and ‘with God all things are possible’) where the curriculum must not present eternal life as attainable by human achievement; keep the source of grace explicitly Christ’s finished work, distinct from bhakti-devotion merit-accumulation and distinct from മറുവില (ransom), which is a specific price-paid category, not generic favor.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: നീതി
Transliteration: neethi
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ധര്മ്മം
Inherited from Romans package. Not prominent as a standalone term in Mark’s narrative but retained for cross-curriculum doctrinal consistency (e.g., discussions of the Law, Mark 2:23-28, 7:1-23). Never ധര്മ്മം.
Salvation
Approved rendering: രക്ഷ
Transliteration: raksha
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: മോക്ഷം, മുക്തി
Inherited from Romans package. Central to Mark’s dual heal/save formula ‘your faith has saved/healed you’ (5:34, 10:52, σῴζω) and to 10:26 (‘who then can be saved?’). Never മോക്ഷം or മുക്തി.
Saints
Approved rendering: വിശുദ്ധര്
Transliteration: vishudhar
Doctrine: Sainthood
Inherited from Romans package. No direct occurrence in Mark’s text, but retained because curriculum teaching material connecting Mark’s servanthood/discipleship teaching to the wider church (e.g., ‘every disciple,’ not an ascetic elite) should use vocabulary consistent with the Romans baseline’s inverted-risk note on വിശുദ്ധര്.
Sin
Approved rendering: പാപം
Transliteration: papam
Doctrine: Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Foundational to Mark’s healing/forgiveness narratives (2:1-12) and the heart-purity teaching of chapter 7.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: ജനതകള്
Transliteration: janathakal
Doctrine: Universal Scope of the Gospel and Mission
Rejected alternatives: ജാതികള്
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Mark 10:42 uses this for ‘rulers of the Gentiles’ as a negative worldly-power foil; Mark 13:10 uses it for the universal missionary scope of the gospel. Never ജാതികള്, which would read as ‘castes’ given Kerala’s own caste history.
Glory
Approved rendering: മഹത്വം
Transliteration: mahatvam
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. In Mark 10:37, James and John wrongly assume Jesus’ ‘glory’ means a worldly-style enthronement with ranked seats — a misuse of the concept the passage itself corrects; a translator note flagging this flawed assumption is advisable. Also relevant to the Transfiguration’s revealed glory (9:2-3).
Election
Approved rendering: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്
Transliteration: daivathinte thiranjeduppu
Doctrine: Effectual Calling and Election
Rejected alternatives: വിധി, തലയെഴുത്ത്
Original: ἐκλογή
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Shares its conceptual root with Mark 13’s ‘the elect’ (οἱ ἐκλεκτοί, see the_elect entry below) and must be rendered consistently with it. Never വിധി (fate) or തലയെഴുത്ത്.
Father
Approved rendering: പിതാവ്
Transliteration: pithavu
Doctrine: Gethsemane and Submission to the Father’s Will
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Confirmed by the divine voice at the Baptism (1:11) and Transfiguration (9:7), and addressed intimately by Jesus in Gethsemane (14:36, see abba below).
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: ദാവീദിന്റെ വംശത്തില്
Transliteration: daveedinte vamshathil
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Retained for cross-reference with Mark’s distinct titular usage ‘Son of David’ (10:47-48, see son_of_david below): a direct address/confession, not a genealogical statement, though sharing the same Davidic-covenant background.
I Am Ambiguous
Approved rendering: ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു
Transliteration: njan aakunnu
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology
Jesus’ words to the terrified disciples on the water (6:50), poised between simple self-identification (‘it is I’) and an echo of the divine ‘I AM’ of Exodus 3:14 LXX. Should not be over-flattened to a purely casual ‘it’s only me,’ but certainty should not be overclaimed at this earlier narrative point either — contrast the Critical, unambiguous i_am_formal entry at 14:62.
Has Come Near
Approved rendering: സമീപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു
Transliteration: sameepichirikkunnu
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God Breaking In
Rejected alternatives: വന്നു (has come, fully realized — overshoots into completed eschatology), വരും (will come, future-only — undershoots the already-arriving force)
Original: ἤγγικεν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Perfect-tense verb ἐγγίζω (Mark 1:15) combining imminence with an already-accomplished arrival — inaugurated, not merely future, eschatology; the thesis statement for ‘The Kingdom of God Breaking In.’ Requires theologian-level attention on first occurrence and consistency thereafter, cross-referenced to 4:11 (mystery), 9:1 (already-present power), and chapter 13 (still-future consummation).
Mystery Of The Kingdom
Approved rendering: ദൈവരാജ്യത്തിന്റെ രഹസ്യം
Transliteration: daivarajyathinte rahasyam
Doctrine: Mystery of the Kingdom
Rejected alternatives: esoteric/occult secret framing
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τῆς βασιλείας
Category: Kingdom
That which is disclosed only to those given insight, hidden from those ‘outside’ (4:11). Must not be read as tantric/occult ‘hidden knowledge’ reserved for a spiritual elite, a live risk in Kerala’s religious landscape; the kingdom’s mystery is disclosed through Jesus’ teaching to all who respond in faith.
The Elect
Approved rendering: തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടവര്
Transliteration: thiranjedukkappettavar
Doctrine: Effectual Calling and Election
Rejected alternatives: വിധി (fate), തലയെഴുത്ത് (fatalism idiom)
Original: οἱ ἐκλεκτοί
Category: Kingdom
Those sovereignly gathered by God at the end of the age (13:20, 13:22, 13:27). Shares its root with the baseline’s ദൈവത്തിന്റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് (election) and must be rendered consistently with it; never with vocabulary suggesting impersonal fate or karma-determined destiny, especially within this apocalyptic discourse.
Divine Necessity
Approved rendering: (necessity construction, e.g. -ണം / ആവശ്യമായിരിക്കുന്നു)
Transliteration: -num / aavashyamayirikkunnu
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Rejected alternatives: വിധി-adjacent phrasing (fate), ordinary obligation-only phrasing lacking divine-plan force
Original: δεῖ
Category: Atonement
Conveys δεῖ (‘it is necessary’) — divine necessity, not mere prediction but a statement of God’s ordained plan (8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34). Malayalam has no single lexical equivalent; must be conveyed through a fixed necessity verb construction (‘must suffer’) applied identically at all three passion predictions, reading as God’s own determined plan, never human inevitability or fatalism. The single clearest genuine structural lexical gap in the Mark curriculum; escalate to theologian review before Phase 2 begins.
Suffer
Approved rendering: കഷ്ടം അനുഭവിക്കുക
Transliteration: kashtam anubhavikkuka
Doctrine: The Necessity of the Cross
Original: πάσχω
Category: Atonement
Jesus’ foretold suffering, rejection, and death; part of the fixed three-part passion-prediction formula repeated at 8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34. Must render identically at all three occurrences for cross-document consistency, per the same principle the baseline applies to Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28.
Blood Of The Covenant
Approved rendering: ഉടമ്പടിയുടെ രക്തം
Transliteration: udampadiyude raktham
Doctrine: The New Covenant and the Blood of Christ
Original: τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης
Category: Covenant
Jesus’ words at the Last Supper (14:24), echoing Exodus 24:8 and Jeremiah 31:31, identifying his death as the covenant-inaugurating sacrifice. ഉടമ്പടി is already established per the baseline; the compound theological claim requires careful catechetical framing consistent with the Ransom-for-Many doctrine’s Critical status.
Betray Hand Over
Approved rendering: ഒറ്റിക്കൊടുക്കുക
Transliteration: ottikkodukkuka
Doctrine: The Ransom for Many
Original: παραδίδωμι
Category: Atonement
To hand over, deliver up — used both of Judas’ betrayal (14:10, 14:18) and, in the passion predictions, of the Son of Man being ‘delivered/handed over’ by divine plan (9:31, 10:33, 14:41), echoing Isaiah 53:6,12. A single Greek verb (παραδίδωμι) spans both senses; Malayalam may need to vary the rendering by context (ഒറ്റിക്കൊടുക്കുക for betrayal; ഏല്പ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു for the passion-prediction sense) while flagging the deliberate wordplay for teaching notes.
Temple Curtain Torn
Approved rendering: തിരശ്ശീല കീറിപ്പോയി
Transliteration: thirasheela keerippoyi
Doctrine: The Passion and Death of Christ
Original: τὸ καταπέτασμα…ἐσχίσθη
Category: Atonement
The Temple’s inner sanctuary veil, torn ‘from top to bottom’ at the moment of Jesus’ death (15:38). Should be explicitly connected in teaching notes to the Ransom-for-Many doctrine’s result: the barrier between God and humanity, dramatized architecturally, is removed by Christ’s death.
Servant
Approved rendering: ശുശ്രൂഷകന്
Transliteration: shushrooshakan
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Rejected alternatives: ഡീക്കന് (deacon — narrows to the later formal ecclesial office)
Original: διάκονος
Category: Servanthood
One who serves, a table-attendant; kingdom greatness redefined as voluntary service to others (9:35, 10:43). Must not be narrowed to the formal ecclesial office; Jesus describes a disposition of voluntary humility expected of every disciple — a risk directly analogous to Kerala Christianity’s well-developed institutional church offices.
Slave
Approved rendering: ദാസന്
Transliteration: dasan
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Rejected alternatives: endorsement-adjacent framing of Kerala’s historical bonded/caste labor system
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Servanthood
One who is owned; a slave with no legal freedom — the most total form of self-giving submission (10:44). Grounded Kerala-specific risk: ദാസൻ carries real social-historical weight, historically used of bonded and lower-caste agricultural laborers under Kerala’s landlord (ജന്മി) system. Must be read as Jesus’ own voluntary self-description of costly self-giving, never as scriptural endorsement of historical caste/bonded-labor structures. Mandatory translator note wherever this term appears in a discipleship context.
Lord It Over
Approved rendering: കര്ത്തൃത്വം കാണിക്കുക / ഭരിക്കുക
Transliteration: karthruthvam kaanikkuka / bharikkuka
Doctrine: Lordship versus Worldly Domination
Rejected alternatives: bare കര്ത്താവ് cognate rendered without a distinguishing note
Original: κατακυριεύουσιν
Category: Servanthood
To bring fully under lordship, to dominate — an abusive, self-serving exercise of rule by ‘rulers of the Gentiles’ (10:42). Shares its root with കര്ത്താവ് (Lord, the baseline’s Critical term for Christ’s exclusive, saving Lordship). Prefer the descriptive phrasing over a bare cognate; if the cognate form is retained for fidelity to the Greek wordplay, a mandatory translator note distinguishing the two senses is required.
Teacher Address
Approved rendering: ഗുരോ / ഗുരു
Transliteration: guro / guru
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Rejected alternatives: ഗുരു used as narratorial identity claim rather than bounded dialogue address
Original: διδάσκαλε
Category: Servanthood
Vocative address, ‘Teacher’ — respectful address for a recognized religious teacher, used by James and John even while making a self-serving request (10:35; also 4:38, 9:5). ഗുരു/ഗുരോ carries strong Hindu guru-disciple bhakti associations that could reframe Jesus as one teacher-guide among many. Retain ONLY as reported/direct speech (how characters address Jesus), never as narratorial description of Jesus’ identity; held in careful tension with the baseline’s rejection of ഗുരു for ‘apostle.’ Mandatory translator note distinguishing this bounded, dialogue-internal usage.
Rebuke Silence
Approved rendering: ശാസിക്കുക
Transliteration: shasikkuka
Doctrine: The Messianic Secret
Original: ἐπιτιμάω
Category: Messianic Secret
To charge sternly, rebuke — Jesus silences unclean spirits and witnesses before they can publicly disclose his identity (1:25, 1:34, 3:12, 8:30). First of Mark’s recurring ‘silencing’ verb family, central to the Messianic Secret motif; must be rendered consistently across occurrences so readers/students can track the pattern across chapters.
Strictly Charged
Approved rendering: കര്ശനമായി കല്പ്പിക്കുക
Transliteration: karshanamayi kalpikkuka
Doctrine: The Messianic Secret
Original: διεστείλατο (διαστέλλομαι)
Category: Messianic Secret
A strong command to silence, part of the Messianic Secret pattern (5:43, 7:36, 9:9). Same motif-family as ശാസിക്കുക; consistent rendering required across all ‘silencing’ commands in the Gospel.
Faith Saved Healed
Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസം…സൗഖ്യമാക്കി / രക്ഷിച്ചു
Transliteration: vishwasam…saukhyamaakki / rakshichu
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε
Category: Faith
‘Your faith has saved/healed you’ — σῴζω carries both ‘save’ and ‘heal’ senses simultaneously (5:34, 10:52). Malayalam must choose between സൗഖ്യമാക്കി (healed) and രക്ഷിച്ചു (saved, from the baseline’s രക്ഷ) or gesture at both; a translator note connecting this healing-language to the doctrinal weight of രക്ഷ is recommended.
Authority
Approved rendering: അധികാരം
Transliteration: adhikaram
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Rejected alternatives: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി conflated with അധികാരം (raw capability vs. delegated right)
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Miracles and Authority
Delegated right/power to act; of teaching (1:22), over unclean spirits (1:27), to forgive sins (2:10), of the Twelve (6:7), and challenged by temple authorities (11:28-33). Must be distinguished from ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി (baseline’s power of God, raw capability) — ἐξουσία is specifically the right/legitimacy to act.
Unclean Spirit
Approved rendering: അശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്
Transliteration: ashudhathmavu
Doctrine: Exorcism and Victory over the Demonic
Original: πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον
Category: Miracles and Authority
A demonic spirit opposing God, causing possession, illness, or disorder (1:23-27, 3:11, 5:1-13, 6:7, 7:25, 9:25). Must be kept distinct from പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് (Holy Spirit) lexically and conceptually; surrounding narrative language must not flatten this into a generic Malayalam folk-belief ‘ghost’ category.
Demon
Approved rendering: ഭൂതം
Transliteration: bhootham
Doctrine: Exorcism and Victory over the Demonic
Rejected alternatives: ഭൂതം read as generic folk-ghost governed by ritual specialists
Original: δαιμόνιον
Category: Miracles and Authority
A demon, near-synonym to πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον (5:1-20, 7:29-30, 9:38). ഭൂതം is also the ordinary Malayalam word for a ‘ghost’ in Kerala’s folk-belief and possession-exorcism traditions (including practices with roots adjacent to folk-Hindu practice). Every occurrence must be anchored to Mark’s specific theological claim — a personal evil spirit under Christ’s total authority and defeated by him — not a generic folk-ghost figure managed by ritual specialists.
Forgive Sins
Approved rendering: ക്ഷമിക്കുക
Transliteration: kshamikkuka
Doctrine: Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: നീതീകരണം (justification — conflates simple pardon with the fuller forensic declaration)
Original: ἀφίημι
Category: Salvation
To send away, release, pardon a debt or offense; the paralytic’s forgiveness (2:5) demonstrates Jesus’ authority over sin itself. Distinct from the baseline’s നീതീകരണം — this is the simpler act of pardoning a specific sin-debt, though both belong to the same Salvation doctrine family.
Son Of David
Approved rendering: ദാവീദിന്റെ പുത്രന്
Transliteration: daveedinte puthran
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Original: υἱὲ Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
A recognized messianic title invoking the Davidic covenant; Bartimaeus’ cry (10:47-48) is the first public, correct naming of Jesus’ messianic identity in Mark without being silenced. Connects to the baseline’s ദാവീദിന്റെ വംശത്തില് (seed of David); this is a distinct titular usage — a direct address/confession, not a genealogical statement.
Gehenna
Approved rendering: നരകം
Transliteration: narakam
Doctrine: Final Judgment and Gehenna
Rejected alternatives: നരകം used without a distinguishing note (collision with cyclical/karmic naraka)
Original: γέεννα
Category: Eschatology
The Valley of Hinnom become an eschatological term — a place of final, irrevocable divine judgment (9:43-48). നരകം is also the standard Malayalam/Hindu cosmological term for a hell-realm within a cyclical, karma-purging rebirth framework. A translator note distinguishing the Christian eschatological finality of γέεννα from the Hindu naraka concept is required.
Blasphemy
Approved rendering: ദൈവദൂഷണം
Transliteration: daivadooshanam
Doctrine: Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
Original: βλασφημία
Category: Sin
Slanderous/impious speech; the high priest’s charge against Jesus for claiming divine identity/prerogative (14:64). Ironic reversal: the true blasphemy in Mark’s narrative logic is the Sanhedrin’s rejection of the true Son of God, not Jesus’ truthful self-disclosure.
Medium Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസം
Transliteration: vishwasam
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Rejected alternatives: ഭക്തി
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Central to Mark’s storm-calming (4:40), healing narratives (5:34, 10:52), and the father’s ‘I believe; help my unbelief’ (9:24). Object of faith must remain recoverable from context; never ഭക്തി.
Called
Approved rendering: വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ട
Transliteration: vilikkappetta
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package. Context-sensitive; in Mark applies to the calling of the Twelve (3:13-19) and, conceptually, to the elect gathered at the end of the age (13:20-27, see the_elect entry below).
Calling
Approved rendering: വിളി
Transliteration: vili
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package. Retained for cross-curriculum consistency; no independent Mark occurrence beyond the calling of disciples (1:16-20, 2:14, 3:13-19).
Holy
Approved rendering: പരിശുദ്ധ
Transliteration: parishudha
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ശുദ്ധം
Inherited from Romans package. Component of പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് (Holy Spirit); retained for cross-curriculum consistency.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: വിശുദ്ധീകരണം
Transliteration: vishudheekaranam
Doctrine: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Retained for cross-curriculum consistency; relevant background for Mark 7:1-23’s heart-purity teaching.
Adoption
Approved rendering: ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം
Transliteration: dattuputhratvam
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ദത്തെടുക്കല്
Inherited from Romans package. No direct Mark occurrence; retained for cross-curriculum consistency with Mark 3:35’s redefinition of true family around obedience to God’s will (ദൈവഹിതം, see below).
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: ആത്മീയവരങ്ങള്
Transliteration: atmeeya varangal
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: വരം
Inherited from Romans package. No direct Mark occurrence; retained for cross-curriculum consistency, distinguishable from Mark’s ആത്മീയവരങ്ങള്-adjacent authority/exorcism vocabulary (അധികാരം, ഭൂതം).
Church
Approved rendering: സഭ
Transliteration: sabha
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: അമ്പലം
Inherited from Romans package. Mark itself predates the term ἐκκλησία as an institutional label but the Twelve (3:13-19) and the wider discipleship community are its narrative seedbed; never അമ്പലം.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവരാജ്യം
Transliteration: daivarajyam
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God Breaking In
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Mark’s central structuring theme from 1:15 onward: parables (4:11, 4:26-32), entrance sayings (9:1, 9:47, 10:14-15, 10:23-25), the messianic banquet (14:25), and 15:43. Not territorial or political.
Law
Approved rendering: ന്യായപ്രമാണം
Transliteration: nyayapramanam
Doctrine: Sabbath and the Law
Rejected alternatives: ധര്മ്മം
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Mark’s Sabbath controversies (2:23-28, 3:1-6) and to Jesus’ claim, ‘The Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath’; must be taught as a specific claim over the Mosaic law’s application, not a general critique of law-keeping. Never ധര്മ്മം.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ അനുസരണം
Transliteration: vishwasathinte anusaranam
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: മതപരമായ കടമ
Inherited from Romans package. No direct Mark occurrence; retained for cross-curriculum consistency with Mark’s discipleship-obedience teaching (8:34-38, 10:28-31).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി
Transliteration: daivathinte shakthi
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Inherited from Romans package. Must be kept distinct from Mark’s അധികാരം (ἐξουσία, delegated legitimate right/authority): power of God is raw capability, while authority is the recognized right to exercise it. Conflating the two blurs Mark’s specific claim about Jesus’ authority.
Covenant
Approved rendering: ഉടമ്പടി
Transliteration: udampadi
Doctrine: The New Covenant and the Blood of Christ
Rejected alternatives: കരാര്
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Mark 14:24’s ‘blood of the covenant’ directly grounds the Ransom doctrine in Old Testament covenant categories, echoing Exodus 24:8 and Jeremiah 31:31. Relational bond, not mere commercial contract.
Intercession
Approved rendering: മധ്യസ്ഥത
Transliteration: madhyasthatha
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Inherited from Romans package. No direct Mark occurrence beyond general prayer teaching (11:24-25); retained for cross-curriculum consistency.
Providence
Approved rendering: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനം
Transliteration: daivathinte paripalanam
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: വിധി
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant background to Mark’s necessity-of-the-cross teaching (δεῖ, 8:31 etc., see divine_necessity below), which must read as God’s determined plan, never impersonal fate.
Mission
Approved rendering: സുവിശേഷപ്രവര്ത്തനം
Transliteration: suvisesha pravarthanam
Doctrine: Universal Scope of the Gospel and Mission
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Mark 13:10 (‘the gospel must first be preached to all nations’) and 16:15 (the Great Commission to ‘all creation’).
God
Approved rendering: ദൈവം
Transliteration: daivam
Doctrine: Jesus as the Suffering Servant and Son of God
Rejected alternatives: ഭഗവാന്
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout Mark; never ഭഗവാന്.
Abba
Approved rendering: അബ്ബാ
Transliteration: abba
Doctrine: Gethsemane and Submission to the Father’s Will
Original: אַבָּא
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Mark 14:36 is the only Gospel occurrence of ‘Abba’ on Jesus’ own lips, praying in Gethsemane — a distinct nuance from Romans 8:15’s description of the Spirit’s work in believers. Preserve the Aramaic transliteration paired with പിതാവ്: അബ്ബാ പിതാവേ.
Life Soul
Approved rendering: ജീവന്
Transliteration: jeevan
Doctrine: The Ransom for Many
Rejected alternatives: ആത്മാവ് (reserved for πνεῦμα/Holy Spirit contexts; carries Hindu ātman associations of a soul distinct from body)
Original: ψυχή
Category: Atonement
One’s whole life or very self, in a holistic Hebrew-influenced sense — the totality of what Jesus gives in the ransom (10:45) and what disciples are called to lose for his sake (8:35-37). Render as ജീവന്, NOT ആത്മാവ്, which would wrongly suggest a dualistic soul released from the body rather than Jesus’ whole embodied life laid down.
Serve And Be Served
Approved rendering: ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കുക / ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കപ്പെടുക
Transliteration: shushrooshikkuka / shushrooshikkappeduka
Doctrine: Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Original: διακονῆσαι / διακονηθῆναι
Category: Servanthood
Active vs. passive of διακονέω; Jesus states his own mission (10:45) in the same terms he has just commanded of the disciples (10:43). Must retain the verbal echo of ശുശ്രൂഷകന് so Malayalam readers see Jesus grounding his own command in his own action.
Unbelief
Approved rendering: അവിശ്വാസം
Transliteration: avishwasam
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: ἀπιστία
Category: Faith
Lack of trust; the father’s confession ‘I believe; help my unbelief’ (9:24) shows faith and doubt coexisting. A pastorally significant nuance: genuine faith need not be free of doubt to be real and effective.
Mercy
Approved rendering: കരുണയുണ്ടാകണം / കരുണ കാണിക്കണം
Transliteration: karunayundaakanam / karuna kaanikkanam
Doctrine: Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Original: ἐλέησον
Category: Faith
‘Have mercy!’ — a cry for compassionate help from someone powerless (10:47-48). Shared vocabulary with Buddhist ethical terminology as well as general Malayalam usage; low risk here as ordinary compassionate-appeal vocabulary.
Leprosy
Approved rendering: കുഷ്ഠം / കുഷ്ഠരോഗി
Transliteration: kushtam / kushtarogi
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Original: λέπρα / λεπρός
Category: Miracles and Authority
A serious, socially stigmatizing skin disease under Levitical purity law (1:40-45). Standard Malayalam medical/biblical term; retain the ritual-purity dimension (not merely a medical healing) in surrounding teaching notes.
Defile
Approved rendering: അശുദ്ധമാക്കുക
Transliteration: ashudhamaakkuka
Doctrine: Heart Purity versus Ritual Defilement
Original: κοινόω / κοινός
Category: Sin
To make common, render ritually impure — Jesus relocates the source of impurity to the heart, not food (7:15-23). Should be distinguished from the noun അശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് (unclean spirit) despite the shared root; context should make clear this is ritual/moral, not demonic, defilement.
Baptism
Approved rendering: സ്നാനം
Transliteration: snanam
Doctrine: Repentance and the Call to Turn
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Church
Immersion; John’s water rite of repentance (ch.1), later extended metaphorically to Jesus’ own suffering and death (10:38-39, ‘the cup/baptism I am baptized with’). സ്നാനം is well established for the water rite; its metaphorical extension to ‘being submerged in suffering’ at 10:38 needs a translator note tying it explicitly to Gethsemane (14:36) and the cross.
Repentance
Approved rendering: മാനസാന്തരം / മാനസാന്തരപ്പെടുവിന്
Transliteration: manasantharam / manasantharappeduvin
Doctrine: Repentance and the Call to Turn
Original: μετάνοια / μετανοέω
Category: Salvation
A change of mind, a turning; John’s baptism ‘of repentance’ and Jesus’ own preaching (1:15, 6:12). Established Malayalam Christian vocabulary; must retain a genuine inward and behavioral turning, not mere emotional regret.
Sabbath
Approved rendering: ശബ്ബത്ത്
Transliteration: shabbathu
Doctrine: Sabbath and the Law
Original: σάββατον
Category: Covenant
The seventh-day rest and its associated legal traditions; Jesus asserts, ‘The Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath’ (2:23-28, 3:1-6). Standard transliteration; ensure teaching material presents this as a specific claim over Mosaic law’s application, not a general critique of religious law-keeping.
Synagogue
Approved rendering: പള്ളി / സിനഗോഗ്
Transliteration: palli / sinagog
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: bare പള്ളി without disambiguation
Original: συναγωγή
Category: Church
The Jewish local assembly and its building; recurring site of Jesus’ teaching and controversy (1:21-29, 3:1, 5:22-38, 6:2). പള്ളി is Malayalam’s generic word for a house of worship, shared by both Malayalam Christians (church) and Malayalam Muslims (mosque); prefer the compound യെഹൂദപ്പള്ളി or the transliteration സിനഗോഗ് at first occurrence in each pericope.
Fasting
Approved rendering: ഉപവാസം
Transliteration: upavasam
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: νηστεία / νηστεύω
Category: Church
Abstaining from food as a religious discipline; Jesus’ ‘bridegroom’ saying (2:18-20) reframes fasting around his presence/absence. Shared vocabulary with Hindu religious fasting practice; unavoidable and low-risk as the only natural Malayalam term, but a translator note distinguishing Christ-centered fasting from merit-based ascetic practice is advisable given the baseline’s Grace-doctrine concern.
Body Eucharistic
Approved rendering: ശരീരം
Transliteration: shareeram
Doctrine: The New Covenant and the Blood of Christ
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
‘This is my body’ (14:22) at the Last Supper, instituting the meal that anticipates and interprets Jesus’ coming death. Standard Malayalam term, low lexical ambiguity; the doctrinal weight is catechetical, not translational.
Talitha Cumi
Approved rendering: താലിഥാ കൂമി
Transliteration: thalitha koomi
Doctrine: Jesus’ Authority over Sickness, Sin, and Nature
Original: ταλιθα κουμι
Category: Proper Names
Aramaic, ‘little girl, arise’ — Jesus’ direct Aramaic address to Jairus’ daughter, preserved untranslated by Mark himself (5:41). Preserve the transliteration exactly, following the same principle as അബ്ബാ, accompanied by an explanatory gloss as a footnote, not a substitution into the main text.
All Creation
Approved rendering: സകല സൃഷ്ടിയോടും
Transliteration: sakala srishtiyodum
Doctrine: The Great Commission and the Resurrection Witness
Original: πάσῃ τῇ κτίσει
Category: Kingdom
The entire created order — the fullest possible scope of the Great Commission (16:15). സൃഷ്ടി is standard, shared Malayalam vocabulary for ‘creation’ across religious traditions including Hindu cosmological usage (srishti); in this Christian doctrinal context it must be understood specifically as God’s created order as in Genesis. Comparatively low risk since Malayalam has no unambiguous alternative.
Love Command
Approved rendering: സ്നേഹം
Transliteration: sneham
Doctrine: The Greatest Commandment: Love of God and Neighbor
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπήσεις
Category: Covenant
Selfless, willed love commanded toward God and neighbor, cited from Deuteronomy 6 and Leviticus 19 (12:29-31). Standard, well-established Malayalam word for love across registers; teaching materials should clarify ἀγάπη’s committed, willed sense distinct from purely affectionate or romantic usage.
Will Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവഹിതം
Transliteration: daivahitham
Doctrine: Gethsemane and Submission to the Father’s Will
Original: θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God
God’s purposive intention, which defines Jesus’ true spiritual family (3:35) and which he submits to in Gethsemane (14:36). Should be read consistently across both occurrences.
King Of The Jews
Approved rendering: യെഹൂദന്മാരുടെ രാജാവ്
Transliteration: yehudanmarude raajaavu
Doctrine: The Passion and Death of Christ
Original: ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Category: Christology
The title used mockingly by Roman soldiers and inscribed on the cross (15:26), yet unwittingly true. Descriptive title, low lexical ambiguity; teaching material should draw out the deliberate irony for students.
House Of Prayer Den Of Robbers
Approved rendering: പ്രാര്ത്ഥനാഭവനം / കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ ഗുഹ
Transliteration: prarthanaabhavanam / kollakkaarude guha
Doctrine: The Passion and Death of Christ
Original: οἶκος προσευχῆς / σπήλαιον λῃστῶν
Category: Covenant
Jesus’ quotation combining Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11 in the Temple-cleansing pronouncement (11:17). Descriptive Old Testament quotation; low independent ambiguity, best handled with cross-reference notes to Isaiah/Jeremiah.
Low Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: അപ്പോസ്തലന്
Transliteration: appostalan
Doctrine: Apostleship and the Sending of the Twelve
Rejected alternatives: ഗുരു
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. The Twelve are appointed and named in Mark 3:14 and sent out in 6:7-13, 6:30. Never ഗുരു — note the internal tension with teacher_address below, where ഗുരു/ഗുരോ is the correct vocative address term for Jesus in reported dialogue but remains forbidden for the office of apostle.

Doctrine: Peace with God

Prophet
Approved rendering: പ്രവാചകന്
Transliteration: pravachakan
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ജ്യോത്സ്യന്
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Mark’s OT-fulfillment framing (e.g., 1:2-3 quoting Isaiah/Malachi, 7:6 quoting Isaiah, 11:17 quoting Isaiah/Jeremiah); do not confuse with ജ്യോത്സ്യന്.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: പ്രവചനം
Transliteration: pravachanam
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Mark’s Isaiah 53 echo in the ransom saying (10:45) and Isaiah/Jeremiah quotations elsewhere.
David
Approved rendering: ദാവീദ്
Transliteration: daveed
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: דָּוִד
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at Mark 10:47-48, 11:10, 12:35-37 (the Son of David/Lord riddle). See son_of_david entry below for the distinct titular usage.
