Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Gospel of John Language Package

English → Malayalam | Phase 1 Complete

Why it matters: Malayalam enters this pipeline with the strongest existing Christian-vocabulary foundation of any language studied to date — nearly two millennia of continuous, settled Bible-translation tradition rooted in the Saint Thomas Christian community. But the Gospel of John, unlike Romans, is built on a small set of simple, heavily repeated, symbolically loaded words (word, life, light, world, believe, judge, I am) rather than dense argumentative vocabulary — and that structural difference opens a genuinely new risk category this package must close before Phase 2 translation of John can safely begin.

Key findings:

  • Malayalam’s settled tradition remains sufficient for most of John’s Christology (വചനം, മാംസധാരണം, ദൈവപുത്രന്‍, ഉയിര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേല്‍പ്പ് all carry over from the Romans baseline unchanged).
  • John introduces two acute, book-specific collision risks absent from Romans: (1) the New Birth term’s near-homophonic proximity to the baseline’s already-forbidden reincarnation word (പുനര്‍ജന്മം), sitting directly inside the core passage John 3:3–8; and (2) the elevated significance of the judgment vocabulary’s shared root with the fatalism-coded word വിധി, now materially more consequential because John’s judgment theology recurs across four major chapters (3, 5, 9, 12) rather than a handful of verses.
  • Two further Kerala-specific comparative-religion risks are new to this curriculum: the bronze-serpent typology (John 3:14) colliding with active folk-Hindu serpent-shrine devotion (നാഗാരാധന), and the Bread of Life discourse (John 6) intersecting live Eucharistic-interpretation differences across Malayalam’s own Catholic/Orthodox and Protestant/Evangelical traditions.
  • The Seven “I Am” Statements and the Paraclete/Counselor term both require mandatory translator notes at every occurrence because Malayalam grammar cannot, on its own, signal either the Exodus 3:14 divine-Name echo or the full legal-advocate/comforter/teacher/intercessor range of παράκλητος.

Risks (by the numbers):

  • 34 doctrines mapped for John, of which 10 are Critical risk and 14 are High risk — 24 of 34 (71%) require mandatory human theologian review, a higher proportion than typical for this Malayalam-language pipeline given the Romans baseline’s comparatively lower overall risk profile.
  • 104 enforced terms now populate the John-specific translation memory (in addition to, not replacing, the Romans baseline’s own term set): 27 Critical-risk and 33 High-risk terms — 60 terms in total requiring mandatory theologian-level enforcement discipline before any segment reaches production.
  • The single highest-priority new rule for the entire curriculum: NEVER render “born again” as പുനര്‍ജനനം or പുനര്‍ജന്മം — an AI system optimizing for fluent Malayalam is statistically likely to reach for exactly this forbidden form inside John 3, the curriculum’s own core passage.

Opportunities:

  • Malayalam’s low baseline syncretism risk (documented extensively in the Romans package) means Phase 2 effort can be concentrated precisely where this analysis says it is needed — the New Birth homophone trap, the judgment/fate collision, and the serpent-typology anchoring note — rather than spread thin across broad vocabulary correction, as required in most other languages in this pipeline.
  • Kerala’s uniquely long mission-sending and theological-literature tradition means technical precision (e.g., unpacking the Paraclete’s four-fold range, or supplying the Isaiah 5/Psalm 80 background for the True Vine statement) will land credibly with a Bible-literate readership rather than feeling imported or foreign.
  • John 3:16’s status as likely the most widely known verse in Malayalam Christian culture gives this curriculum an unusually strong existing on-ramp for teaching the New Birth and God’s Love doctrines correctly from the very first lesson.

Recommended actions:

  1. Load the John-specific translation_memory.json and 12_ai_translation_requirements.md addendum alongside — never instead of — the Romans baseline before any Phase 2 segment translation of John begins.
  2. Route all 24 theologian-required doctrines (see assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json) through mandatory human review before publication, with the New Birth, bronze-serpent, and Seven “I Am” segments flagged for priority-first review given their concentration inside the core passage.
  3. Escalate the two new forbidden-substitution rules (New Birth/reincarnation collision; judgment/fate collision) into any future automated QA tooling’s hard-fail checks, not merely its style-guide recommendations.
  4. Flag — but do not resolve unilaterally within the translation — the two identified denominational-sensitivity points (Bread of Life sacramental language, John 8:44’s anti-Judaism-misuse history) for native-speaker and theologian input respectively before finalizing any lesson touching John 6 or John 8.
