Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John
English → Malayalam | Full-Book Doctrine Matrix
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 (doctrine identification and risk mapping) for the full Gospel of John, chapters 1–21. It is built to be numerically and terminologically identical to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — same 34 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing — and adds (a) supporting passages drawn specifically from John, (b) a plain-language translation-risk statement per doctrine, and (c) a chapter-by-chapter coverage confirmation satisfying the full-book mandate. The core passage John 3:1–21 is the theological anchor of the curriculum (New Birth, God’s Love for the World, and Judgment/Belief converge there) but every chapter of John, first to last, has been reviewed below.
Part A — Full Doctrine Matrix (34 Doctrines)
| # | Doctrine | Malayalam Doctrine Name | Primary Passages (John) | Risk | Translation Risk (Summary) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word) | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ദൈവത്വവും മുന്നിലനില്പ്പും | 1:1-3; 1:14; 3:13; 5:26; 8:58; 17:5 | Critical | ഞാന് ആകുന്നു does not automatically carry the Exodus 3:14 echo without a translator note; വചനം must be read as a proper divine title, not generic “speech.” | Human theologian |
| 2 | Incarnation (the Word Became Flesh) | മാംസധാരണം | 1:14 | Critical | [Baseline reuse] NEVER അവതാരം; AI-drift risk from the broader non-Christian-authored Malayalam corpus is the primary hazard, not existing tradition failure. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Humanity of Christ | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ മനുഷ്യത്വം | 1:14; 4:6-7; 11:33-38; 19:28; 19:34 | High | Genuine exhaustion, grief, and bodily death must be rendered without any docetic (illusory-body) softening. | Human theologian |
| 4 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | പുതുജനനവും ആത്മാവിനാലുള്ള നവീകരണവും | 3:3-8; 3:5 | Critical | NEW forbidden-substitution rule: NEVER പുനര്ജനനം/പുനര്ജന്മം (reincarnation collision). Use വീണ്ടും ജനിക്കുക / പുതുജനനം only. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | ക്രിസ്തുവിലുള്ള വിശ്വാസത്താല് നിത്യജീവന് | 3:15-16; 3:36; 5:24; 6:47; 10:28; 11:25-26; 17:3; 20:31 | High | Must be read as relational, Christ-mediated, present-tense life (per 17:3’s own definition), not an abstract endless-existence state attained by effort. | Human theologian |
| 6 | God’s Love for the World | ലോകത്തോടുള്ള ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്നേഹം | 3:16-17; 15:13 | High | ഏകജാതന്‘s uniqueness must not be diluted; ലോകം’s sense (loved humanity vs. hostile world-system) must be tracked per occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | ന്യായവിധിയും വിശ്വാസവും അവിശ്വാസവും | 3:17-21; 3:36; 5:24, 29; 9:39-41; 12:31, 48; 16:8-11 | High | വിധിക്കുക/ന്യായവിധി share a root with വിധി (fate); John’s realized-eschatology tense contrast (3:18) must not collapse into simple future. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Light and Darkness Dualism | വെളിച്ചവും അന്ധകാരവും | 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:1-41; 12:35, 46 | Medium | Established, low-ambiguity terms; risk is cross-chapter consistency, not lexical collision. | Native speaker review |
| 9 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | ഏഴ് ‘ഞാന് ആകുന്നു’ പ്രഖ്യാപനങ്ങള് | 6:35; 8:12; 10:7, 9; 10:11, 14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1, 5 | Critical | Exclusivity (“the,” not “a”) must be preserved in every predicated statement; the absolute formula needs a recurring translator note. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Bread of Life and Eucharistic Sensitivity | ജീവന്റെ അപ്പവും കൂദാശാ സംവേദനക്ഷമതയും | 6:35, 41, 48, 51; 6:53-58; 6:63 | High | അപ്പം is the standard Communion-bread term; ch. 6’s flesh/blood language intersects live denominational sacramental differences. | Human theologian |
| 11 | The Good Shepherd’s Substitutionary Love | നല്ല ഇടയന്റെ പകരപ്രായശ്ചിത്ത സ്നേഹം | 10:11-18; 10:27-30 | High | Christ’s voluntary self-giving (“of my own accord,” 10:18) must not read as passive victimhood. | Human theologian |
| 12 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | സഹായകനായ പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് | 7:39; 14:16-17, 26; 15:26; 16:7-13; 20:22 | Critical | No single Malayalam word spans the Paraclete’s full advocate/comforter/teacher range; സഹായകന് requires notes at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പകരപ്രായശ്ചിത്ത മരണം | 1:29, 36; 3:14; 10:11-18; 12:23-33; chs. 18-19 | Critical | നിവൃത്തിയായി (19:30) must convey completed, once-for-all accomplishment; സര്പ്പം (3:14) risks Kerala folk-serpent-worship resonance without anchoring. | Human theologian |
| 14 | The Resurrection of Christ | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ് | 11:25; 20:1-29 | Critical | [Baseline reuse] NEVER പുനര്ജന്മം; Thomas’s confession (20:28) is the single highest-stakes verse for this doctrine and Deity of Christ together. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Unity of the Father and the Son | പിതാവിന്റെയും പുത്രന്റെയും ഐക്യം | 10:30, 33, 38; 14:9-11; 17:11, 21-22 | Critical | Must convey unity of essence while preserving Person-distinction (guard against modalism); 17:21-22 reuses the same word ഒന്ന് for believers’ analogical unity. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Sonship and Deity of Christ | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പുത്രത്വവും ദൈവത്വവും | 1:34, 49; 3:16-18; 5:25; 10:36; 11:4, 27; 19:7; 20:31 | Critical | [Baseline reuse] NEVER ദേവപുത്രന്; John’s ദൈവമക്കള് (born-of-God sense) must not collapse into the baseline’s separate ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം (legal-adoption sense). | Human theologian |
| 17 | Lordship of Christ | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ കര്ത്തൃത്വം | 4:11; 6:68; 9:38; 11:27; 13:6-9; 20:28; 21:7 | Critical | [Baseline reuse] കര്ത്താവ് established; 20:28’s confession requires the same unqualified force as Romans 10:9. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Testimony and Witness | സാക്ഷ്യം | 1:7-8, 15, 19-34; 3:11; 5:31-39; 8:12-18; 15:26-27; 21:24 | Medium | Standard forensic-register term; risk is book-length consistency (bookends ch. 1 and ch. 21), not collision. | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Worship in Spirit and Truth | ആത്മാവിലും സത്യത്തിലുമുള്ള ആരാധന | 4:19-24; 9:38 | High | ആരാധിക്കുക is also used of Hindu temple worship; exclusivity of true worship must remain clear from context. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Sign Theology | അടയാളങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവശാസ്ത്രം | 2:1-11; 2:23; 4:54; 9:1-41; 11:1-44; 20:30-31 | Medium | അടയാളം must stay distinct from അത്ഭുതം (mere wonder) to preserve John’s sign-as-pointer structure. | Native speaker review |
| 21 | Bronze Serpent Typology | താമ്രസര്പ്പ പ്രതിരൂപം | 3:14-15 | High | Kerala’s active നാഗാരാധന (serpent-shrine devotion) risks devotional misreading absent explicit Numbers 21 anchoring. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Wrath and Judgment of God | ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കോപവും ന്യായവിധിയും | 3:36; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31, 48 | High | Must remain personal, righteous divine opposition to sin; guard against impersonal karma-like drift. | Human theologian |
| 23 | Freedom from Sin | പാപത്തില്നിന്നുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം | 8:31-36 | Medium | Primary sense must remain spiritual (freedom from sin), even as Kerala’s caste/bondage history gives the imagery live secondary resonance. | Native speaker review |
| 24 | Sanctification and Holiness | വിശുദ്ധീകരണം | 17:17, 19 | Medium | [Baseline reuse, noun; verb new] Tied to being set apart “in the truth,” not ritual purification. | Native speaker review |
| 25 | Jewish Identity and “the Jews” (Ioudaioi) | യെഹൂദ വ്യക്തിത്വവും ‘യെഹൂദന്മാരും’ | 1:19; 5:16-18; 8:44; 9:22; 18:12-14; 19:19-22 | High | Each occurrence requires discernment of ethnic-national vs. hostile-authority sense; Kerala’s Cochin Jewish community adds local sensitivity. | Human theologian |
| 26 | The Devil and the Roots of Unbelief | പിശാചും അവിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ വേരുകളും | 3:19-20; 8:44; 9:39-41 | High | 8:44 must not be read as a blanket ethnic condemnation; requires theologian framing given documented history of misuse. | Human theologian |
| 27 | Pastoral Commissioning and Restorative Love | ഇടയശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കുള്ള നിയോഗവും പുനഃസ്ഥാപന സ്നേഹവും | 21:15-17 | Medium | Malayalam cannot sustain the ἀγαπάω/φιλέω distinction cleanly; flag for teaching note, not an invented lexical split. | Native speaker review |
| 28 | Kingdom of God: Entry Contingent on New Birth | പുതുജനനത്തിലൂടെ ദൈവരാജ്യപ്രവേശനം | 3:3, 5; 18:36 | Medium | [Baseline reuse, ദൈവരാജ്യം] Necessity (not mere possibility) of new birth for kingdom entry must be retained via Malayalam verb-suffix construction. | Native speaker review |
| 29 | The Father-Son Sending Pattern | പിതാവ്-പുത്ര നിയോഗ മാതൃക | 3:17; 5:36-37; 20:21 | High | Must not flatten to a merely logistical “sent”; consistency between 3:17 and 20:21 preserves the deliberate mission parallel. | Human theologian |
| 30 | Glorification through Suffering (the Cross as Glory) | കഷ്ടപ്പാടിലൂടെയുള്ള മഹത്വീകരണം | 12:23-33; 13:31-32; 17:1, 5 | High | John’s paradox (shame = glory) must be preserved by context/note, since മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്തുക alone suggests only triumphant, non-suffering exaltation. | Human theologian |
| 31 | Children of God by New Birth | പുതുജനനത്താല് ദൈവമക്കളാകല് | 1:12-13 | High | ദൈവമക്കള് (born-of-God) must remain distinct from the baseline’s ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം (legal-adoption sense, Romans 8). | Human theologian |
| 32 | The New Commandment of Christlike Love | ക്രിസ്തുതുല്യ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ കല്പ്പന | 13:34-35; 15:12-13 | Medium | Christ’s own self-giving love (soon enacted at the cross) is the measure of the command, not a generic ethical ideal. | Native speaker review |
| 33 | Christian Fellowship and Friendship with Christ | ക്രിസ്തുവുമായുള്ള കൂട്ടായ്മയും സൗഹൃദവും | 14:2; 15:13-15 | Low | Warmly established, low-ambiguity vocabulary. | Automated review |
| 34 | Thanksgiving in Johannine Narrative | സുവിശേഷ ആഖ്യാനത്തിലെ കൃതജ്ഞത | 6:11, 23; 11:41 | Low | [Baseline reuse] Standard vocabulary; no significant doctrinal risk. | Automated review |
Part B — Core Passage Anchor: John 3:1–21
The curriculum’s core passage is the single richest doctrinal convergence point in the Gospel. It carries, at minimum:
- New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit (3:3-8) — Critical, the curriculum’s most urgent forbidden-substitution rule
- Kingdom of God: Entry Contingent on New Birth (3:3, 5) — Medium
- Bronze Serpent Typology (3:14-15) — High
- Christ’s Substitutionary Death (3:14, proto-typological) — Critical
- God’s Love for the World (3:16-17) — High
- Eternal Life through Faith in Christ (3:15-16) — High
- Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (3:17-21) — High
- Wrath and Judgment of God (3:36, immediately following context) — High
- The Father-Son Sending Pattern (3:17) — High
- Light and Darkness Dualism (3:19-21) — Medium
- The Devil and the Roots of Unbelief (3:19-20) — High
- Sonship and Deity of Christ (3:16-18) — Critical
No other single pericope in John touches this many Critical/High doctrines simultaneously, confirming its selection as the theological anchor. However, per the full-book coverage mandate, this passage is the anchor, not the scope boundary — the remaining chapters carry doctrines of equal or greater individual weight (the Seven “I Am” Statements, the Passion narrative, the Farewell Discourse’s Paraclete teaching, and Thomas’s confession) that this passage alone does not cover.
Part C — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Confirmation (Full-Book Mandate)
Every chapter of John has been reviewed for doctrinal load. Chapters contributing no new terms or doctrines beyond what is already logged are explicitly noted as reviewed below, per the pipeline’s full-coverage requirement.
| Chapter | Doctrines Present (by # above) | Coverage Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 2, 3, 16, 25, 31, 13 (Lamb of God, proto), 18 | Prologue carries the highest doctrinal density outside ch. 3; Word/Logos, Incarnation, Sonship, and Children-of-God-by-New-Birth all originate here. |
| 2 | 20 (sign theology, Cana), 30 (temple-body foreshadowing of resurrection/glory) | Reviewed; no new Critical/High terms beyond sign theology and glory vocabulary already logged. |
| 3 | 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 16, 21, 22, 26, 28, 29 | Core passage; see Part B above. |
| 4 | 5, 17, 19, 29 | Living water and Samaritan worship dialogue; worship in spirit/truth is the chapter’s distinctive new contribution. |
| 5 | 7, 15 (equality of Father/Son, 5:17-18), 14, 18, 22 | Sabbath-healing controversy; judgment and testimony vocabulary prominent; equality-with-Father claim (5:18) reinforces Unity doctrine. |
| 6 | 9, 10 | Bread of Life discourse; the curriculum’s principal Eucharistic-sensitivity chapter. |
| 7 | 12, 25 | Spirit “not yet given” (7:39) is essential background for the Paraclete doctrine’s redemptive-historical timing. |
| 8 | 9 (I Am statements, 8:12, 24, 28, 58), 23, 25, 26 | Light of the World; “before Abraham was, I Am”; freedom-from-sin discourse; devil/unbelief (8:44) requires theologian review. |
| 9 | 8, 9 (Door/Shepherd anticipation), 19, 20, 22 | Man born blind; sign theology, light/darkness/blindness motif, and judgment converge. |
| 10 | 9, 11, 15, 16 | Good Shepherd discourse; “I and the Father are one” (10:30) — Unity doctrine’s first explicit statement. |
| 11 | 3, 5, 9, 16, 20 | Lazarus; “I am the resurrection and the life”; Humanity of Christ (deeply moved, 11:33-38). |
| 12 | 7, 22, 30 | Triumphal entry, grain of wheat, glorification-through-suffering; “the hour” motif intensifies. |
| 13 | 17, 32, 13 (betrayal) | Footwashing; new commandment; Judas’s betrayal within the substitutionary-death frame. |
| 14 | 9, 12, 15, 33 | ”I am the way, truth, life”; first extended Paraclete teaching; Father-Son unity (14:9-11). |
| 15 | 9, 12, 32, 33 | True Vine; continued Paraclete teaching; new commandment reinforced; election language (15:16, 19; baseline reuse). |
| 16 | 12, 22 | Paraclete’s convicting ministry (16:8-11) continues; judgment vocabulary recurs. |
| 17 | 5, 15, 24, 29, 30 | High priestly prayer; eternal life defined (17:3); Unity of Father/Son at its fullest statement (17:11, 21-22); sanctification (17:17, 19). |
| 18 | 17, 28 | Arrest and trials; “my kingdom is not of this world” (18:36). |
| 19 | 13, 25 | Crucifixion; “it is finished” (19:30); blood and water (19:34); King of the Jews inscription. |
| 20 | 12, 14, 16, 17, 5 | Resurrection narrative; receiving the Holy Spirit (20:22); Thomas’s confession (20:28) — the Gospel’s Christological and doctrinal climax; purpose statement (20:30-31). |
| 21 | 17, 27, 18 | Restoration of Peter; pastoral commissioning; testimony motif closes (21:24). |
Explicit note on light-coverage chapters: Chapters 2, 7, and 18 carry comparatively lower doctrinal density than the rest of the Gospel and introduce no new Critical-risk terms beyond those already logged elsewhere; they have nonetheless been fully reviewed and are recorded here as such, per the mandate that no chapter may be silently omitted.

Headline findings carried forward from 08_core_glossary.md and confirmed here:
- The New Birth/regeneration forbidden-substitution rule (πυνर്ജനനം/പുനര്ജന്മം collision) is this curriculum’s single most urgent new AI-drift risk, concentrated in John 3 (the core passage) and echoing forward into every subsequent “born of God” reference (1:12-13; 3:3-8).
- The κρίνω/κρίσις–വിധി (fate) homophone risk is elevated in significance in John relative to Romans because judgment theology recurs across four major chapters (3, 5, 9, 12) rather than a handful of verses.
- Two John-specific comparative-religion risks not present in the Romans baseline are newly logged here: the Bronze Serpent’s collision with Kerala’s active folk-Hindu serpent-shrine devotion (നാഗാരാധന), and the Bread of Life discourse’s live ecumenical sacramental sensitivity across Malayalam denominations.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ദൈവത്വവും മുന്നിലനില്പ്പും
Key terms: word (logos), I am, has life in himself, ascended/descended, before Abraham was, I am
Review routing: Human theologian
വചനം (Word) is a settled ecumenical Malayalam term but must be treated as a proper divine title, not generic speech. The absolute ἐγώ εἰμι formula (ഞാന് ആകുന്നു) does not automatically carry its Exodus 3:14 resonance in Malayalam without an accompanying translator note, since Malayalam readers cannot recover the Greek Old Testament echo from the bare phrase alone.
Incarnation (the Word Became Flesh)
Malayalam name: മാംസധാരണം
Key terms: the Word became flesh, flesh, tabernacled/dwelt
Review routing: Human theologian
[BASELINE REUSE] John 1:14 is the very Greek phrase anchoring the Romans package’s incarnation entry. NEVER അവതാരം — a generically-trained AI drawing on Malayalam’s broader non-Christian-authored text corpus may default to it as the statistically natural rendering; this remains the pipeline’s clearest case of AI training-data bias risk rather than an existing tradition failure.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Malayalam name: പുതുജനനവും ആത്മാവിനാലുള്ള നവീകരണവും
Key terms: born again/born from above, born of water and Spirit, flesh (contrastive), the Spirit blows where it wishes
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, JOHN-SPECIFIC RISK NOT PRESENT IN THE ROMANS PACKAGE: NEVER പുനര്ജനനം or പുനര്ജന്മം for ‘born again’ — both are dangerously close in spelling and pronunciation to the baseline’s already-forbidden reincarnation term പുനര്ജന്മം. Use വീണ്ടും ജനിക്കുക / പുതുജനനം (built on പുതു ‘new,’ not the പുനര് ‘re-/again’ prefix). An AI system generating fluent Malayalam for ‘born again’ may default to a പുനര്-prefixed compound as statistically natural, which a Malayalam reader would likely hear as reincarnation language. This is this curriculum’s single most urgent new forbidden-substitution rule.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Malayalam name: ഏഴ് ‘ഞാന് ആകുന്നു’ പ്രഖ്യാപനങ്ങള്
Key terms: bread of life, light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth, and the life, the true vine
Review routing: Human theologian
Each predicated statement requires exclusivity to be preserved (‘the light,’ not ‘a light,’ etc.); the absolute ἐγώ εἰμι formula underlying all of them requires a translator note restoring the Exodus 3:14 echo, which the bare Malayalam phrase ഞാന് ആകുന്നു does not automatically convey. John 14:6’s exclusivity clause carries particular pastoral sensitivity given Kerala’s religious pluralism.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Malayalam name: സഹായകനായ പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്
Key terms: Counselor/Paraclete, Spirit of truth, the Spirit had not yet been given, receive the Holy Spirit, convict/expose
Review routing: Human theologian
No single Malayalam word spans the full legal-advocate + comforter + teacher + intercessor semantic range of παράκλητος; സഹായകന് (‘helper’) is recommended but requires translator notes at every occurrence. Rejected: മധ്യസ്ഥന് (would collide with the baseline’s established മധ്യസ്ഥത/‘intercession’); ആശ്വാസകന് alone (too narrow). The redemptive-historical ‘not yet given’ timing (7:39) tied to Christ’s glorification must also be preserved for the doctrine’s full coherence.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പകരപ്രായശ്ചിത്ത മരണം
Key terms: Lamb of God, lifted up, cross/crucify, it is finished, hand over/betray, blood and water
Review routing: Human theologian
നിവൃത്തിയായി (‘it is finished,’ 19:30) must convey a completed, once-for-all accomplishment, not merely ‘the suffering has ended’ — this is the single most theologically loaded moment of this doctrine and requires mandatory theologian review at every citation. സര്പ്പം (bronze serpent typology, 3:14) risks resonating with Kerala’s folk-Hindu serpent-worship tradition (നാഗാരാധന) rather than the Numbers 21 background unless explicitly anchored.
The Resurrection of Christ
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ്
Key terms: resurrection, I am the resurrection and the life, my Lord and my God
Review routing: Human theologian
[BASELINE REUSE] ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ് is the established, unambiguous Malayalam term; NEVER പുനര്ജന്മം (reincarnation). Thomas’s confession (20:28) is arguably the single highest-stakes verse in the whole Gospel for both this doctrine and the Deity of Christ; mandatory theologian review.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Malayalam name: പിതാവിന്റെയും പുത്രന്റെയും ഐക്യം
Key terms: I and the Father are one, that they may be one, as we are one, honor the Son as the Father
Review routing: Human theologian
ഞാനും പിതാവും ഒന്ന് ആകുന്നു must convey a unity of divine essence, not merely agreement of will or purpose, while the Malayalam construction must keep the distinction of Persons visible to avoid a modalist reading (one Person wearing two names). John 17:21-22 extends this same Malayalam word ഒന്ന് to believers’ unity, requiring a translator note distinguishing the analogical/relational sense from the Father-Son’s ontological/essential sense. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Sonship and Deity of Christ
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പുത്രത്വവും ദൈവത്വവും
Key terms: Son of God, only-begotten, children of God (contrast)
Review routing: Human theologian
[BASELINE REUSE] ദൈവപുത്രന് required; NEVER ദേവപുത്രന്, which would place Christ within a pantheon of celestial beings. John’s distinct “children of God” (ദൈവമക്കള്, born-of-God sense, ch. 1 and 3) must not be collapsed into the baseline’s separate ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം (legal-adoption sense, Romans 8); these are complementary but non-identical biblical pictures.
Lordship of Christ
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ കര്ത്തൃത്വം
Key terms: Lord, my Lord and my God
Review routing: Human theologian
[BASELINE REUSE] കര്ത്താവ് established and unambiguous across all Malayalam Christian traditions; John 20:28’s direct, personal confession requires the same full, unqualified force as Romans 10:9.
High Risk Doctrines
Humanity of Christ
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ മനുഷ്യത്വം
Key terms: flesh (neutral sense), deeply moved/groaned, flesh and blood
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s genuine physical exhaustion (4:6-7), grief (11:33-38, ആത്മാവില് കലങ്ങി), and bodily death (19:34) must be rendered so as to guard against any docetic reading that his humanity or emotion was illusory or performative.
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവിലുള്ള വിശ്വാസത്താല് നിത്യജീവന്
Key terms: eternal life, believing in him, know (relationally), perish
Review routing: Human theologian
നിത്യജീവന് carries comparatively low syncretism risk since ജീവന് is not Hindu-liberation-coded (unlike the already-forbidden മോക്ഷം/മുക്തി), but the doctrinal risk is real: translators must ensure the term is read as relational, Christ-mediated life (per John 17:3’s own definition), not an abstract state of endless existence attainable through effort or merit.
God’s Love for the World
Malayalam name: ലോകത്തോടുള്ള ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്നേഹം
Key terms: loved, world, only-begotten, gave (his only Son)
Review routing: Human theologian
ഏകജാതന് (only-begotten) derives from Sanskrit ‘jāta’ (born), a different root from ജാതി (‘caste/kind’), already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline for the unrelated ജനതകള്/ജാതികള് collision; the two are near-homophones to an untrained ear and require a clarifying note at first use to avoid unintended caste-association drift. ലോകം (world) must be tracked per-occurrence for which of John’s two senses (loved humanity vs. hostile world-system) is active.
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Malayalam name: ന്യായവിധിയും വിശ്വാസവും അവിശ്വാസവും
Key terms: judge/condemn, judgment, judged already (tense contrast), wrath of God, convict/expose
Review routing: Human theologian
JOHN-SPECIFIC RISK BEYOND THE ROMANS PACKAGE: Malayalam വിധിക്കുക/ന്യായവിധി share their root with വിധി (‘fate’), already forbidden in the Romans baseline for ‘election’/‘providence’ due to its fatalistic connotation. Because John’s judgment theology (chs. 3, 5, 9, 12) is far more prominent and recurrent than in Romans, this collision risk is elevated in significance here; translators must ensure these terms convey God’s personal, righteous verdict, never impersonal fate. The present/perfect tense contrast in 3:18 (John’s ‘realized eschatology’) must also be preserved, not collapsed into simple future tense.
Bread of Life and Eucharistic Sensitivity
Malayalam name: ജീവന്റെ അപ്പവും കൂദാശാ സംവേദനക്ഷമതയും
Key terms: bread of life, flesh and blood, the Spirit gives life
Review routing: Human theologian
അപ്പം is also the standard Malayalam term for Holy Communion bread across every denominational tradition; John 6:53-58’s ‘eat my flesh, drink my blood’ language carries live ecumenical sensitivity, since Catholic/Orthodox and Protestant/Evangelical Malayalam traditions differ significantly in their theological interpretation (real presence vs. memorial/symbolic reading). Flag for review rather than resolving unilaterally within the translation.
The Good Shepherd’s Substitutionary Love
Malayalam name: നല്ല ഇടയന്റെ പകരപ്രായശ്ചിത്ത സ്നേഹം
Key terms: good shepherd, lay down (his) life, I and the Father are one (contextual)
Review routing: Human theologian
Must preserve the voluntary, self-giving character of Christ’s death (‘of my own accord,’ 10:18); this is essential to the Substitutionary Death doctrine and must not be rendered so as to suggest Christ was a passive victim of external forces.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Malayalam name: ആത്മാവിലും സത്യത്തിലുമുള്ള ആരാധന
Key terms: worship, spirit and truth
Review routing: Human theologian
ആരാധിക്കുക is a widely shared interfaith Malayalam term also used of Hindu temple worship; translators must ensure the exclusivity of worship due to the one true God remains clear from context, and that ‘in spirit and truth’ is understood as inward, Spirit-enabled worship rather than a mere ritual-location distinction.
Bronze Serpent Typology
Malayalam name: താമ്രസര്പ്പ പ്രതിരൂപം
Key terms: serpent, lifted up
Review routing: Human theologian
Kerala has a well-developed folk-Hindu serpent-worship tradition (നാഗാരാധന, sarpa-kavu shrines still active in many Kerala households); a bare reference to സര്പ്പം without explanatory framing risks resonating with devotional serpent-symbolism rather than being heard as the historical Numbers 21 typological reference. Translator notes must anchor the image firmly to the Mosaic wilderness narrative.
Wrath and Judgment of God
Malayalam name: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കോപവും ന്യായവിധിയും
Key terms: wrath of God, judge/condemn, judgment
Review routing: Human theologian
ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കോപം must remain God’s personal, righteous opposition to sin; guard against drift toward an impersonal cosmic-consequence framing that would functionally resemble karma, a risk analogous to but distinct from the വിധി (fate) collision documented under Judgment and Belief/Unbelief above.
Jewish Identity and ‘the Jews’ (Ioudaioi)
Malayalam name: യെഹൂദ വ്യക്തിത്വവും ‘യെഹൂദന്മാരും’
Key terms: the Jews, King of the Jews, the devil (contextual, 8:44)
Review routing: Human theologian
Kerala has its own small, ancient Cochin Jewish community, giving this term a live local-sensitivity dimension absent from the Romans package. Each occurrence requires discernment of whether the ethnic-national or hostile-authority sense is active; John 8:44’s severe language additionally carries a documented history of anti-Judaism misuse and must be flagged so it is read as addressing a specific unbelieving audience’s response, not an ethnic verdict.
The Devil and the Roots of Unbelief
Malayalam name: പിശാചും അവിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ വേരുകളും
Key terms: devil, hate (the light), blindness
Review routing: Human theologian
പിശാച് is an unambiguous Malayalam term for the personal spiritual adversary, but John 8:44’s identification of unbelieving hearers with the devil requires theologian review to ensure it is not read as a blanket ethnic condemnation, given the history of interpretation documented under Jewish Identity above.
The Father-Son Sending Pattern
Malayalam name: പിതാവ്-പുത്ര നിയോഗ മാതൃക
Key terms: sent, as the Father has sent me, so I send you
Review routing: Human theologian
The theological weight of the Father’s commissioning of the Son (and the Son’s commissioning of the disciples) should not be flattened to a merely logistical ‘sent him over’; consistency of rendering between 3:17 and 20:21 is important to preserve the deliberate parallel extending the doctrine into the church’s mission.
Glorification through Suffering (the Cross as Glory)
Malayalam name: കഷ്ടപ്പാടിലൂടെയുള്ള മഹത്വീകരണം
Key terms: glorify, the hour, grain of wheat
Review routing: Human theologian
John’s central theological paradox — that the crucifixion, an act of shame, is simultaneously Christ’s supreme glorification — must be preserved by context and translator note, since a Malayalam reader might otherwise expect മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്തുക to describe only triumphant, non-suffering exaltation.
Children of God by New Birth
Malayalam name: പുതുജനനത്താല് ദൈവമക്കളാകല്
Key terms: children of God, born of God
Review routing: Human theologian
ദൈവമക്കള് (born-of-God sense) must not be collapsed into the baseline’s ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം (Romans 8’s legal-adoption sense); the two are distinct, complementary Greek terms and doctrines, and Malayalam must preserve that distinctness for the New Birth doctrine’s own emphasis to remain visible.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Light and Darkness Dualism
Malayalam name: വെളിച്ചവും അന്ധകാരവും
Key terms: light, darkness, blind
Review routing: Native speaker review
വെളിച്ചം and അന്ധകാരം are established, low-ambiguity Bible-register terms; the operative risk is consistency across all occurrences (chs. 1, 3, 8, 9, 12) rather than lexical collision, since the motif’s cumulative force depends on the same words recurring throughout.
Testimony and Witness
Malayalam name: സാക്ഷ്യം
Key terms: testify/testimony, receive
Review routing: Native speaker review
സാക്ഷ്യം is a standard forensic/legal-register Malayalam term with low ambiguity; the operative risk is consistency across the whole book (this motif bookends the Gospel from ch. 1 to ch. 21), not lexical collision.
Sign Theology (Signs Pointing to Christ’s Identity and Glory)
Malayalam name: അടയാളങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവശാസ്ത്രം
Key terms: sign, glory
Review routing: Native speaker review
അടയാളം (mark/sign) must be kept distinct from അത്ഭുതം (mere wonder); collapsing the two flattens John’s sign-as-pointer theology, structuring the entire first half of the Gospel, into simple wonder-working.
Freedom from Sin
Malayalam name: പാപത്തില്നിന്നുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം
Key terms: freedom, slave, truth will set you free
Review routing: Native speaker review
Kerala’s own social history of caste-linked social bondage gives this slavery/freedom language a live resonance; translators should keep the primary sense decisively spiritual (freedom from sin) while being alert that readers may rightly draw parallel connections to social liberation themes.
Sanctification and Holiness
Malayalam name: വിശുദ്ധീകരണം
Key terms: sanctify, set apart in the truth
Review routing: Native speaker review
[BASELINE REUSE for the noun; verb form new to John] വിശുദ്ധീകരിക്കുക ties directly to being set apart ‘in the truth’ through Christ’s word, not ritual purification or ascetic self-improvement.
Pastoral Commissioning and Restorative Love
Malayalam name: ഇടയശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കുള്ള നിയോഗവും പുനഃസ്ഥാപന സ്നേഹവും
Key terms: agapē/phileō love distinction, shepherd/feed
Review routing: Native speaker review
Malayalam does not sustain a clean two-word distinction matching ἀγαπάω/φιλέω; flag for a native-speaker teaching note explaining the Greek nuance for study purposes rather than inventing an artificial Malayalam lexical distinction that would not reflect natural usage.
Kingdom of God: Entry Contingent on New Birth
Malayalam name: പുതുജനനത്തിലൂടെ ദൈവരാജ്യപ്രവേശനം
Key terms: kingdom of God, born again, my kingdom is not of this world
Review routing: Native speaker review
[BASELINE REUSE for ദൈവരാജ്യം] John’s striking conditioning of kingdom-entry on new birth (found nowhere else with this specific framing) must retain the necessity expressed through Malayalam’s verb-suffix construction (e.g. ജനിക്കണം), not softened into mere possibility.
The New Commandment of Christlike Love
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുതുല്യ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ കല്പ്പന
Key terms: new commandment, love one another, greater love has no one
Review routing: Native speaker review
Low lexical ambiguity; the doctrinal point is that Christ’s own self-giving love (soon enacted at the cross) is the measure of the command, not a generic ethical ideal — worth flagging in notes so the connection to the Substitutionary Death doctrine is not lost.
Low Risk Doctrines
Christian Fellowship and Friendship with Christ
Malayalam name: ക്രിസ്തുവുമായുള്ള കൂട്ടായ്മയും സൗഹൃദവും
Key terms: friends, abide/remain, dwelling places
Review routing: Automated review
സ്നേഹിതര് and വസിക്കുക/നിലനില്ക്കുക are low-ambiguity, warmly established Malayalam terms; no significant syncretism or doctrinal-loss risk beyond ordinary translation care.
Thanksgiving in Johannine Narrative
Malayalam name: സുവിശേഷ ആഖ്യാനത്തിലെ കൃതജ്ഞത
Key terms: gave thanks, thanksgiving
Review routing: Automated review
[BASELINE REUSE] കൃതജ്ഞത is standard, low-ambiguity vocabulary; no significant doctrinal risk beyond ordinary translation care.
