Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Revelation — English → Malayalam

Why it matters

Malayalam carries the pipeline’s oldest, most settled Christian vocabulary tradition (Saint Thomas Christian community, c. 52 AD) — the Romans curriculum proved this language needs almost no doctrinal correction, only disciplined enforcement against AI drift. Revelation breaks that pattern. It is the first curriculum in this pipeline where Malayalam’s existing, correct Christian vocabulary itself collides with currently active Kerala religious practice — serpent veneration, folk sorcery, image veneration, astrology — not merely with a historically displaced vocabulary layer. The core passage, Revelation 21:1–8, sits at the doctrinal center of this risk: it names the New Jerusalem, the Bride, the Alpha and Omega, the second death, and grace-freely-given in a single eight-verse block, all of which depend on Revelation-specific fencing rules that Romans never required.

Key findings

  • 135+ terms tracked: 35 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, 100+ newly coined or fenced for Revelation’s distinct apocalyptic-symbolic vocabulary (dragon, beast, seal/mark, Alpha and Omega, Hades/abyss/lake of fire, bride/prostitute).
  • 29 doctrines mapped across all 22 chapters (full-book coverage confirmed; no chapter silently omitted) under the curriculum’s 9 top-level Bible Doctrines.
  • Per assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: 8 Critical, 18 High, 4 Medium, 0 Low doctrines — 26 requiring mandatory human theologian review, versus roughly 20/39 (Critical+High) in the Romans baseline. Revelation’s risk profile is measurably higher than Romans’ despite sharing the same settled Malayalam Christian vocabulary base.
  • The single highest-stakes new risk in the entire Malayalam pipeline: δράκων/ὄφις (“dragon”/“serpent”) rendered as മഹാസര്‍പ്പം collides with Kerala’s living Naga-veneration tradition (household സര്‍പ്പക്കാവ് groves, the Mannarasala shrine); Revelation’s own text supplies the fix (mandatory “who is called the devil and Satan” identification), but only if enforced without exception at every occurrence (12:9; 20:2).
  • Three afterlife terms, one generic collapse risk: Hades (പാതാളം), the abyss (അഗാധം), and the lake of fire (അഗ്നിക്കടല്‍) must stay lexically distinct or risk collapsing into a generic നരകം that imports Hindu/Buddhist karmic-cyclical punishment connotations foreign to Revelation’s final, eternal judgment.
  • A structurally unique internal risk: the mark of the beast (അടയാളം) vs. the seal of God (മുദ്ര) is a divine/demonic ownership-mark contrast that exists nowhere in the Romans baseline; the two Malayalam words must never merge.

Risks

  • Critical (8 doctrines): Deity of Christ/Alpha-Omega, Seven Spirits and the Trinity, Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints, Worship of the Lamb, Exclusive Worship of God Alone, Mark of the Beast vs. Seal of God, Dragon/Serpent Identification as Satan, Universal Human Accountability Judged by Works.
  • High (18 doctrines) include the Return and Reign of Christ, Sovereignty of God over History, Perseverance and Martyrdom under Persecution, the Afterlife-Realms Distinction, the Second Death, the Idolatry/Sorcery Vice Lists, the New Heaven and New Earth, Divine Indwelling, the Church as Bride of Christ, the Bride-vs-Prostitute antithesis, Symbolic/Apocalyptic Interpretation, the Millennial Interpretation, Assurance of Final Victory, Spiritual Warfare, Sainthood under Persecution, the Eternal Gospel, and Grace/Water-of-Life-Freely-Given.
  • AI-drift risk (inherited pattern, intensified): an AI system trained on the general Malayalam corpus is likelier to default to മ്ലേച്ഛൻ (caste-coded “detestable”), നരകം (generic “hell”), or an unglossed മഹാസര്‍പ്പം than a human translator steeped in the Christian tradition would be — precisely because these words are common, fluent, and doctrinally wrong in this context.
  • Pastoral risk: idolater/sorcerer vice-list terms (21:8; 22:15) name practices still live in Kerala today; mishandled framing risks sounding like denunciation of Hindu neighbors or folk practitioners rather than Scripture’s own moral category.

Opportunities

  • Malayalam already possesses precise, doctrinally sound vocabulary for nearly every Revelation concept (കുഞ്ഞാട് for Lamb, മണവാട്ടി for Bride, രക്തസാക്ഷി for martyr-witness) — the task is disciplined fencing and consistency enforcement, not invention.
  • Revelation’s own text frequently supplies its own safeguard (e.g., the dragon’s appositional “who is called the devil and Satan”); Phase 2 need only enforce these built-in disambiguations without exception rather than construct new ones.
  • Kerala’s long-established, socially accepted mission-sending tradition gives the “eternal gospel” doctrine positive institutional weight, lowering (not eliminating) its review burden relative to contexts carrying colonial-mission baggage.
  • The identical-verb worship polemic (ആരാധിക്കുക for both true and false worship) is a genuine translation gift: Malayalam’s single verb preserves Revelation’s own rhetorical structure without modification.
  1. Load assets/translation_memory.json and assets/bible_term_registry.json (Revelation editions) before any Phase 2 segment processing; treat the dragon/serpent co-identification rule and the seal/mark distinctness rule as hard validation failures, equivalent in enforcement weight to the Romans baseline’s forbidden-substitution list.
  2. Route all 8 Critical and 18 High doctrine-tagged segments to mandatory human theologian review per assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json; treat the entire core passage (Revelation 21:1–8) as the highest-priority review block.
  3. Attach the mandatory translator notes specified in analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md at every occurrence of: dragon/serpent, seven spirits, second death, judged-according-to-works, mark-of-beast/seal-of-God, and Alpha-and-Omega — even where the lexical choice itself is unambiguous, since the doctrinal risk lies in surrounding framing.
  4. Brief all reviewers using analysis/04_comparative_theology.md’s Kerala-specific rows before teaching-note generation, particularly for the dragon/serpent, idolater/sorcerer, and morning-star terms, to ensure non-polemical, Scripture-anchored framing toward Kerala’s Hindu and folk-religious neighbors.
  5. Carry forward all Romans-package forbidden substitutions unchanged; do not treat Revelation’s new risk category as a replacement for the original AI-drift risk, since both apply simultaneously in this curriculum.
