Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — 2 John (English → Malayalam)

Why it matters

2 John is short (13 verses, one chapter) but doctrinally dense: its entire argument depends on getting one Christological claim exactly right — that Jesus Christ came genuinely “in the flesh” (1:7) — and on translating the practical consequences of that claim (fellowship, hospitality, perseverance) without either softening John’s warning or offending Kerala’s deeply held, cross-religious hospitality norms. Malayalam remains the best-positioned language in this pipeline overall, thanks to nearly two millennia of settled Saint Thomas Christian vocabulary, but 2 John introduces this curriculum’s single highest-stakes new risk: a fluent, corpus-common Malayalam word (അവതാരം, “avatar”) that the actual Christian tradition never used, sitting directly across the path of the letter’s central polemic against denying the incarnation.

Key findings

  • Full-book coverage confirmed. All 13 verses analyzed; the core passage (1:4–11) carries the highest doctrinal density, but the opening greeting (1:1–3, triadic grace-mercy-peace, “Son of the Father,” election) and closing (1:12–13, joy, family fellowship, second “elect” occurrence) both introduce load-bearing vocabulary and are fully documented.
  • 38 terms now seeded into assets/translation_memory.json: 10 inherited exactly from the baseline Romans package (ദൈവം, യേശു, ക്രിസ്തു, പിതാവ്, ദൈവപുത്രന്‍, കൃപ, സമാധാനം, മാംസധാരണം, കൂട്ടായ്മ, ദൈവത്തിന്‍റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്) and 28 new to this curriculum.
  • Two genuinely new forbidden-substitution risks beyond the baseline’s existing list: (1) standalone ഉപദേശം (teaching) risks being heard as one Hindu guru’s spiritual upadesha among many; (2) കൂട്ടായ്മ (the baseline’s warm, positive fellowship term) must never be used for 1:11’s negative “shares in evil works,” an inversion risk unique to this letter.
  • One unresolved exegetical fork requiring a human decision before Phase 2: κυρία (1:1, 5, 13) — individual honored woman vs. personified local congregation — changes how the hospitality warning is applied and must be rendered identically at all three occurrences once decided.
  • Doctrine risk registry: 15 doctrines logged for 2 John — 5 Critical, 5 High, 4 Medium, 1 Low — with 10 of 15 requiring human theologian review and 4 requiring native speaker review; only 1 doctrine (Christian Joy and Family Fellowship) is automated-review-only.
  • Term-level risk: of the load-bearing terms catalogued in the core glossary, 4 are Critical, 8 are High, 13 are Medium, and 7 are Low risk.

Risks

  • Critical (5 doctrines / theologian review required for every occurrence): Incarnation; Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Sonship and Deity of Christ; Confession of Christ’s True Nature; Antichrist Doctrine. All five cluster tightly around Christology and collide most sharply with (a) Kerala’s Hindu avatar framework, which treats divine descent as repeatable and provisional, and (b) a generically-trained AI system’s statistical pull toward അവതാരം as a “natural-sounding” but doctrinally false choice.
  • High (5 doctrines / theologian review required): Walking in Truth and Love; Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ; Grace, Mercy, and Peace; Divine Election of Believers. These collide primarily with Kerala’s deeply held cultural value of hospitality and with Sanskrit-derived vocabulary shared across Hindu bhakti/Advaita and Buddhist ethical frameworks (truth, love, mercy, teaching/upadesha).
  • Combined Critical + High: 10 of 15 doctrines (67%) require mandatory human theologian review before this curriculum can proceed to Phase 2 segment translation — a notably higher proportion than typical for Malayalam given this short letter’s unusually concentrated Christological argument.
  • Highest single risk in the letter: അവതാരം drift at 1:7’s incarnation clause, which would invert the letter’s central purpose (warning against denying real, fleshly incarnation) into its Hindu-avatar opposite.

Opportunities

  • No genuinely missing vocabulary. Unlike several languages in this pipeline, Malayalam’s challenge in 2 John is overwhelmingly “crowded neighborhood” (existing fluent words carrying off-target associations), not vocabulary gaps requiring new coinage — this makes disciplined enforcement, not invention, the primary Phase 2 task.
  • Existing Malayalam Bible precedent already resolves the incarnation register split. The established Satyavedapustakam rendering of the parallel 1 John 4:2 (ജഡത്തില്‍ വന്നു) can be reused directly at 2 John 1:7, requiring no new translation decision, only consistent enforcement against the doctrine-name compound മാംസധാരണം.
  • Kerala’s hospitality tension is a strong teaching opportunity, not just a risk. Framing 1:10–11 explicitly as a narrow, doctrinally bounded exception (not a general principle) turns a potential cultural collision into a clear, memorable lesson about the relationship between truth and love — the letter’s own central theme.
  1. Resolve the κυρία rendering decision (theologian sign-off) before any Phase 2 segment touching 1:1, 1:5, or 1:13 is processed.
  2. Add the two new 2 John-specific forbidden-substitution rules (standalone ഉപദേശം; കൂട്ടായ്മ at 1:11) to automated validation alongside the baseline’s existing forbidden list.
  3. Require the mandatory hospitality teaching-note (per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md Rule 9) on every deployment of 1:10–11, not only the bare verse translation.
  4. Route all segments touching 1:7 (incarnation, confession, antichrist) and 1:3/1:9 (Son of the Father / Son of God phrase distinction) to human theologian review before Phase 2 sign-off, consistent with the doctrine risk registry.
  5. Carry assets/translation_memory.json (2 John) forward into Phase 2 alongside the baseline Romans TM, with the 2 John file taking precedence for all terms it defines.
