Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Revelation (Full Book) — English → Malayalam

Methodology

This analysis covers Revelation (Greek: Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰωάννου) chapter by chapter, first to last, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, Revelation 21:1–8, receives full verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every other chapter (1–20, 21:9–27, 22) receives a chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Malayalam) rendering risk.

Where a term already exists in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, the recorded Malayalam rendering is reused exactly and marked “(reused from Romans baseline).” New terms are assessed against the same risk framework used in the baseline (Critical / High / Medium / Low), with special attention to Kerala-specific religious vocabulary collisions not present in the Romans package — most importantly serpent/dragon veneration (Naga worship), idol-worship vocabulary, astrology-adjacent vocabulary, and caste-purity-coded vocabulary, alongside the pipeline’s known generic risk of AI drift toward doctrinally wrong but fluent-sounding terms.

Revelation is apocalyptic-prophetic literature (ἀποκάλυψις + προφητεία, 1:1,3; 22:18–19) with heavy symbolic numerology and imagery; several risk notes below concern Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation as a distinct doctrinal category requiring translator notes so readers do not default to either flat literalism or dismissive allegorization.

Part 1 — Core Passage: Revelation 21:1–8 (Verse-by-Verse)

Revelation 21:1

“Καὶ εἶδον οὐρανὸν καινὸν καὶ γῆν καινήν· ὁ γὰρ πρῶτος οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ πρώτη γῆ ἀπῆλθαν, καὶ ἡ θάλασσα οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι.”

καινός (kainos) — “new”

  • Literal meaning: new in kind/quality (contrast with νέος, new in time/age)
  • Semantic range: fresh, previously non-existent in this form, qualitatively renewed
  • English variants: new, renewed, of a new kind
  • Contextual theological meaning: Not a patched-up old cosmos but a qualitatively new creation act of God, continuing the “new” language of 2 Cor 5:17, Isa 65:17
  • Malayalam rendering: പുതിയ (puthiya). Risk: Medium — Malayalam പുതിയ does not itself distinguish “qualitatively new” from “chronologically recent”; a translator note is needed at first use so the doctrine of a genuinely new creation (not a renovated old one) is preserved for the “New Heaven and New Earth” doctrine.

οὐρανός (ouranos) — “heaven/sky” and γῆ (ge) — “earth”

  • Literal meaning: sky/heavens; ground/land
  • Semantic range: physical sky, the abode of God, the whole created cosmos (paired merism “heaven and earth” = the entirety of creation)
  • English variants: heaven, sky, heavens; earth, land, ground
  • Contextual theological meaning: the merism denotes the totality of the created order being renewed, not merely “the sky” as a location
  • Malayalam rendering: ആകാശം (akasham) / ഭൂമി (bhoomi). Risk: Low — established, unambiguous Malayalam Bible vocabulary (cf. ഉല്‍പത്തി 1:1).

παρέρχομαι (parerchomai) — “pass away”

  • Literal meaning: to go past, pass by, come to an end
  • Semantic range: cease to exist, be superseded, become obsolete
  • English variants: passed away, vanished, gone
  • Contextual theological meaning: decisive, final termination of the old fallen order — echoes 2 Cor 5:17 and Matt 24:35
  • Malayalam rendering: കടന്നുപോയി (kadannu poyi). Risk: Low.

θάλασσα (thalassa) — “sea”

  • Literal meaning: sea, ocean
  • Semantic range: in Revelation, the sea is repeatedly the source of chaos, the beast (13:1), and separation/death (20:13); its absence signals removal of chaos and threat, not merely a change of geography
  • English variants: sea, ocean
  • Contextual theological meaning: symbolic elimination of primordial chaos and cosmic opposition to God, not a literal claim that the new earth has no water features
  • Malayalam rendering: കടല്‍ (kadal). Risk: Medium — a translator note is needed so readers do not read this as an anti-nature or anti-water statement; the point is the removal of the sea’s symbolic role as the abode of chaos/the beast (13:1), consistent with the “Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation” doctrine.

Revelation 21:2

“καὶ τὴν πόλιν τὴν ἁγίαν Ἰερουσαλὴμ καινὴν εἶδον καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἡτοιμασμένην ὡς νύμφην κεκοσμημένην τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς.”

πόλις ἁγία (polis hagia) — “holy city”

  • Literal meaning: city, set apart
  • Semantic range: ἅγιος = set apart for God, morally pure (reused from Romans baseline: “holy” = പരിശുദ്ധ)
  • English variants: holy city, sacred city
  • Contextual theological meaning: the eschatological, God-dwelt community, not a pilgrimage or shrine city
  • Malayalam rendering: പരിശുദ്ധ നഗരം (parishudha nagaram), using the baseline’s exact rendering of “holy” (പരിശുദ്ധ, reused from Romans). Risk: Low.

Ἰερουσαλὴμ καινή (Ierousalem kaine) — “new Jerusalem”

  • Literal meaning: new + proper name Jerusalem
  • Semantic range: not the earthly, historical/political city, but the consummated people of God as a city, descending from God
  • English variants: New Jerusalem, the new Jerusalem
  • Contextual theological meaning: the culmination of the Church as God’s dwelling place; ties directly to “Church as Bride of Christ” and “New Heaven and New Earth” doctrines
  • Malayalam rendering: പുതിയ യെരൂശലേം (puthiya yerushalem), using established Malayalam Bible proper-name form for Jerusalem. Risk: Low-Medium — care needed that readers do not conflate this with contemporary political Jerusalem; a brief note distinguishing the symbolic-eschatological referent from the modern city is advisable.

νύμφη (nymphe) — “bride”

  • Literal meaning: bride, young married/betrothed woman
  • Semantic range: a bride prepared/adorned for her wedding — a state of anticipation and covenant commitment, not yet consummated
  • English variants: bride, betrothed
  • Contextual theological meaning: the Church’s identity as Christ’s covenant beloved, prepared by grace not self-adornment (contrast with the “prostitute” Babylon in ch. 17–18); central to the “Church as Bride of Christ” doctrine
  • Malayalam rendering: മണവാട്ടി (manavatti). Risk: Medium — must retain the sense of a bride prepared for her wedding (anticipatory, covenantal), not merely “wife” (ഭാര്യ, which would flatten the eschatological not-yet); translator note recommended to link this to 19:7’s “marriage of the Lamb” (κുഞ്ഞാടിന്‍റെ വിവാഹം) for cross-document consistency.

κοσμέω (kosmeo) — “adorn”

  • Literal meaning: to put in order, adorn, decorate
  • Semantic range: bridal adornment; also the root of κόσμος (world/order)
  • English variants: adorned, arrayed, made ready
  • Contextual theological meaning: the Church’s beauty is a gift given/prepared by God, not self-achieved merit — a parallel concern to the Romans baseline’s grace-vs-merit caution
  • Malayalam rendering: അലങ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട (alankarikkappetta, “adorned”). Risk: Medium — ensure passive voice (“having been adorned”) is preserved in Malayalam grammar so the bride’s beauty reads as received, not self-produced, reinforcing the grace doctrine already flagged Critical/High in the Romans baseline.

Revelation 21:3

  • Literal meaning: seat of authority
  • Semantic range: royal/judicial authority seat; in Revelation, God’s/the Lamb’s throne is the central image of the entire book (occurring ~40 times)
  • English variants: throne, seat of authority
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s unshaken sovereign rule over all history — central to the “Sovereignty of God over History” doctrine
  • Malayalam rendering: സിംഹാസനം (simhasanam, lit. “lion-seat”). Risk: Low-Medium — this is Malayalam’s standard, religiously neutral word for any royal/divine throne (used across secular, mythological, and biblical registers); no specific Hindu-deity collision, but consistency across all ~40 occurrences in the book must be maintained per the cross-document consistency rule established in the Romans package.

σκηνή (skene) / σκηνόω (skenoo) — “dwelling / tabernacle, to tabernacle”

  • Literal meaning: tent, tabernacle; to pitch a tent, to dwell
  • Semantic range: the OT tabernacle where God’s presence dwelt among Israel (Exod 25:8); echoed in John 1:14, “the Word became flesh and tabernacled (ἐσκήνωσεν) among us”
  • English variants: dwelling place, tabernacle, tent; to dwell, to tabernacle
  • Contextual theological meaning: This is the same verb root used of Christ’s incarnation in John 1:14. Revelation 21:3 presents the consummation of the incarnational pattern — God’s permanent, unmediated dwelling with his redeemed people. This is a load-bearing term for the “New Heaven and New Earth” and “Sovereignty of God over History” doctrines and must echo the Christological incarnation motif already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline (incarnation = മാംസധാരണം).
  • Malayalam rendering: വസിക്കും (vasikkum, “will dwell”) with the noun വാസസ്ഥലം (vasasthalam, “dwelling place”) for σκηνή. Risk: High — a literal translation risks losing the tabernacle/incarnation echo entirely by rendering it as generic “God will be with people.” A translator note should point back to the established incarnation term (മാംസധാരണം) and to John 1:14’s usage, so the theological arc from incarnation to consummated indwelling is visible to reviewers, even though the verb itself (വസിക്കും) is necessarily more generic in ordinary Malayalam.

λαός (laos) — “people”

  • Literal meaning: a people, nation, populace (distinct from ἔθνη/nations, gentiles — reused from Romans baseline as ജനതകള്‍)
  • Semantic range: covenant people of God, echoing OT “you will be my people” formula (Lev 26:12; Jer 31:33)
  • English variants: people, my people
  • Contextual theological meaning: fulfillment of the covenant formula — God’s people drawn from both Israel and the nations (cf. “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” doctrine in the Romans baseline)
  • Malayalam rendering: ജനം / ജനങ്ങള്‍ (janam/janangal). Risk: Low-Medium — distinct from ജനതകള്‍ (nations/gentiles, reused baseline term); care needed not to blur the covenant-people sense with the generic-nations sense in translation.

Revelation 21:4

“καὶ ἐξαλείψει πᾶν δάκρυον ἐκ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ ὁ θάνατος οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι οὔτε πένθος οὔτε κραυγὴ οὔτε πόνος οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι, [ὅτι] τὰ πρῶτα ἀπῆλθαν.”

θάνατος (thanatos) — “death”

  • Literal meaning: death, the state/event of dying
  • Semantic range: physical death; personified as an enemy/power throughout Revelation (6:8; 20:13-14); distinct from θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος, “the second death” (see v.8 below)
  • English variants: death
  • Contextual theological meaning: the final, permanent abolition of death itself as an enemy (1 Cor 15:26) — the climactic vindication promised to the saints, tying “Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints” to “Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil”
  • Malayalam rendering: മരണം (maranam). Risk: Low — established, but the distinction from “second death” (below) must be kept sharp; this verse describes ordinary/first death’s abolition for the redeemed, not the second death (which the wicked instead suffer, v.8).

πένθος (penthos), κραυγή (krauge), πόνος (ponos) — “mourning, crying, pain”

  • Literal meaning: grief/mourning; outcry/crying; toil/pain
  • Semantic range: the full range of human sorrow resulting from the fall and death
  • English variants: mourning, crying, pain; sorrow, wailing, suffering
  • Contextual theological meaning: comprehensive, not merely emotional comfort — the entire structure of a fallen, groaning creation (cf. Rom 8:22, “creation groans”) is undone
  • Malayalam rendering: ദുഃഖം (mourning), നിലവിളി (crying/outcry), വേദന (pain). Risk: Low.

πρῶτος (protos) — “former, first”

  • Literal meaning: first, former
  • Semantic range: here, “the former things,” i.e., the old fallen order described in vv.1 and 4
  • English variants: former things, first things, previous order
  • Contextual theological meaning: linked to καινός (v.1) — the decisive replacement of the fallen created order
  • Malayalam rendering: മുന്‍കാല കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ (munkala karyangal, “former things”). Risk: Low.

Revelation 21:5

“Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ· Ἰδοὺ καινὰ ποιῶ πάντα. καὶ λέγει· Γράψον, ὅτι οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί εἰσιν.”

ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ (ho kathemenos epi to throno) — “the one seated on the throne”

  • Literal meaning: the one sitting upon the throne
  • Semantic range: a recurring Revelation title for God the Father (4:2,9; 5:1,7,13; 6:16; 7:10,15; 19:4; 20:11; 21:5)
  • English variants: he who sits on the throne, the enthroned one
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s active, present sovereignty exercised from the throne — reinforces “Sovereignty of God over History”
  • Malayalam rendering: സിംഹാസനത്തില്‍ ഇരിക്കുന്നവന്‍ (simhasanathil irikkunnavan). Risk: Low-Medium — must be rendered consistently throughout the book as a fixed divine title, per the cross-document consistency rule.

πιστός (pistos) — “faithful, trustworthy” / ἀληθινός (alethinos) — “true”

  • Literal meaning: full of faith/trust-worthy; genuine, real
  • Semantic range: πιστός shares the root of πίστις (faith, reused from Romans baseline as വിശ്വാസം); ἀληθινός contrasts the genuine with the counterfeit (cf. the beast’s counterfeit signs)
  • English variants: faithful, trustworthy, reliable; true, genuine, real
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s own words are certified as reliable revelation, contrasted with the deceptive words of the beast/false prophet (13:11-14; 19:20) — relevant to “Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation” (readers must trust John’s record as accurate revelation, not private fantasy) and to “Perseverance and Faithful Witness”
  • Malayalam rendering: വിശ്വസ്തം (vishwastham, “faithful/trustworthy”) and സത്യമായ (sathyamaya, “true”). Risk: Medium — വിശ്വസ്തം shares a root with the baseline’s വിശ്വാസം (faith), which is a deliberate and desirable theological echo; must not be replaced with a synonym that severs this link.

Revelation 21:6

“καὶ εἶπέν μοι· Γέγονεν. ἐγώ [εἰμι] τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ, ἡ ἀρχὴ καὶ τὸ τέλος. ἐγὼ τῷ διψῶντι δώσω ἐκ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς ζωῆς δωρεάν.”

γέγονεν (gegonen) — “it is done”

  • Literal meaning: perfect tense of γίνομαι, “it has happened/come to pass”
  • Semantic range: declarative completion formula, echoing 16:17’s plague-ending “It is done” but here positively, of new creation’s completion
  • English variants: it is done, it has come to pass, it is accomplished
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s redemptive plan reaches its decisive, accomplished goal — ties “Sovereignty of God over History” to “Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil”
  • Malayalam rendering: സാധിച്ചു / നിറവേറി (sadhichu / niraverі, “it is accomplished/fulfilled”). Risk: Medium — should echo, without being identical to, Christ’s cross-declaration “It is finished” (τετέλεσται, John 19:30, Malayalam നിറവേറി/സമാപ്തമായി) so that readers sense both the distinctness and the theological continuity between the cross and the consummation.

Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ (Alpha kai to O) — “Alpha and Omega”

  • Literal meaning: the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet
  • Semantic range: a self-designation of absolute, all-encompassing eternity and sovereignty, applied to God the Father (1:8; 21:6) and to Christ (22:13) — a Critical deity-of-Christ marker, since the title is applied interchangeably to God and to Jesus
  • English variants: Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End
  • Contextual theological meaning: absolute divine eternity and sovereignty over all history — directly supports “The Sovereignty of God over History” and (via its application to Christ in 22:13) “Deity of Christ” continuity with the Romans baseline’s Critical-risk Christological terms (lord, son_of_god)
  • Malayalam rendering: ആല്‍ഫയും ഒമേഗയും (alphayum omegayum), retained as a transliteration since Malayalam’s own alphabet has no equivalent “first/last letter” idiom, paired with the Greek text’s own explanatory apposition ആദിയും അന്തവും (adiyum anthavum, “the beginning and the end”). Risk: Critical — this title’s Christological application in 22:13 makes it doctrinally equivalent in weight to the Romans baseline’s Critical terms for Lord/Son of God; the transliteration plus explanatory gloss must be used identically at every occurrence (1:8; 21:6; 22:13) per the cross-document consistency rule.

ἐγώ εἰμι (ego eimi) — “I am”

  • Literal meaning: first-person copula, “I am”
  • Semantic range: in Johannine literature, an echo of the divine self-name of Exodus 3:14 (LXX ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν)
  • English variants: I am, I AM
  • Contextual theological meaning: a divine self-declaration formula, not a mere grammatical statement — reinforces the deity claims bound up with “Alpha and Omega”
  • Malayalam rendering: ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു (njan aakunnu), the established Malayalam rendering of Exodus 3:14 and John 8:58. Risk: Critical — must be rendered with the same fixed formula used at Exodus 3:14 and in the Gospel of John’s “I am” sayings so the divine self-identification is recognizable across Scripture; a generic “I am [something]” phrasing would flatten the theophanic force.

διψάω (dipsao) — “thirst” / πηγή (pege) — “spring” / ὕδωρ τῆς ζωῆς (hydor tes zoes) — “water of life” / δωρεάν (dorean) — “freely, without cost”

  • Literal meaning: to be thirsty; a spring/fountain; water of life; as a free gift, gratis
  • Semantic range: echoes Isa 55:1 and John 4:14/7:37-38; δωρεάν is the same “without payment” idea underlying the Romans baseline’s grace doctrine
  • English variants: thirst; fountain, spring; living water, water of life; freely, without cost, as a gift
  • Contextual theological meaning: eternal life offered on the same grace basis as justification in Romans — this term is a direct doctrinal bridge to the Romans baseline’s Critical/High “grace” term (കൃപ) and its explicit warning against a bhakti-merit framing
  • Malayalam rendering: ദാഹിക്കുന്നവന് (dahikkunnavan, “to the one who thirsts”), ജീവജലത്തിന്‍റെ ഉറവ് (jeevajalathinte uravu, “spring of the water of life”), സൗജന്യമായി (soujanyamayi, “freely, without cost”). Risk: High — സൗജന്യമായി must be preserved without softening into a term that could suggest the water is a reward for devotion or thirst-as-merit; this is the same grace-versus-merit boundary the Romans baseline flags for കൃപ, and should be cross-referenced explicitly in reviewer notes.

Revelation 21:7

“ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός.”

νικάω (nikao) — “to conquer, overcome”

  • Literal meaning: to win a victory, prevail, conquer
  • Semantic range: the defining verb of the letters to the seven churches (2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21) and of the saints’ victory over the dragon (12:11) and the beast (15:2); victory secured through faithful endurance and the blood of the Lamb, not military or self-generated strength
  • English variants: overcome, conquer, prevail, be victorious
  • Contextual theological meaning: central to “Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution” and “Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil” — the overcomer’s victory is Christ’s victory shared with the faithful witness (cf. 12:11, “they conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony”)
  • Malayalam rendering: ജയിക്കുന്നവന്‍ (jayikkunnavan, “the one who overcomes”). Risk: Medium — must be rendered identically at every occurrence throughout chapters 2–3, 12, 15, and 21 per cross-document consistency; risk of drifting to a purely militaristic connotation (ജയിക്കുക can be used generically for “winning” in sports/war) without the accompanying doctrinal note that this victory is Christ-empowered, not self-achieved.

κληρονομέω (kleronomeo) — “inherit”

  • Literal meaning: to receive as an heir, to inherit
  • Semantic range: full legal inheritance rights — the same semantic domain as the Romans baseline’s “adoption” term (ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം), which explicitly stresses complete inheritance rights
  • English variants: inherit, receive as inheritance, obtain as an heir’s portion
  • Contextual theological meaning: the overcomer’s promised inheritance is directly tied to being named God’s son (see below), continuing the adoption theology of Romans 8:14-17
  • Malayalam rendering: അവകാശമാക്കും (avakashamakkum, “will make [it] an inheritance”). Risk: Medium — should be cross-referenced to the baseline adoption term ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം so translators recognize this verse as Revelation’s completion of Romans 8’s adoption doctrine.

υἱός (huios) — “son”

  • Literal meaning: son
  • Semantic range: here, adoptive filial relationship extended to every overcomer, echoing the Davidic covenant formula (2 Sam 7:14, “I will be his father, and he will be my son”) now universalized to all the redeemed
  • English variants: son, child
  • Contextual theological meaning: continuity with the Romans baseline’s “adoption” and “father” doctrines (ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം, പിതാവ്), now stated as the eschatological inheritance promise
  • Malayalam rendering: പുത്രന്‍ (puthran). Risk: Medium — must be read alongside, not as a replacement for, the baseline’s compound ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം (adoption) so the full sonship-with-inheritance sense is not lost to a bare, generic “son.”

Revelation 21:8

  • Literal meaning: fearful, timid, cowardly
  • Semantic range: the opposite of the persevering, faithful witness (contrast with νικάω above); moral failure of nerve under pressure, not simple emotional fear
  • English variants: cowardly, fearful, faint-hearted
  • Contextual theological meaning: directly opposed to “Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution” — cowardice here means apostasy under pressure, denying Christ to save one’s life
  • Malayalam rendering: ഭീരുക്കള്‍ (bheerukkal). Risk: Medium — a translator note should clarify this is not ordinary human fearfulness but faith-denying apostasy under persecution, to avoid pastoral misapplication to believers who struggle with fear but do not deny Christ.

ἄπιστος (apistos) — “unbelieving, faithless”

  • Literal meaning: without faith/trust; the direct negation of πιστός
  • Semantic range: shares the root of πίστις (faith, വിശ്വാസം) and πιστός (faithful, വിശ്വസ്തം, v.5 above)
  • English variants: unbelieving, faithless, without faith
  • Contextual theological meaning: final judgment falls on those who never trusted Christ, in deliberate contrast with the “faithful and true” God of v.5
  • Malayalam rendering: അവിശ്വാസികള്‍ (avishwasikal), built on the same root as the baseline’s വിശ്വാസം (faith). Risk: Medium — the shared root with വിശ്വാസം should be preserved (not replaced with an unrelated synonym) so the deliberate contrast with v.5’s “faithful” (വിശ്വസ്തം) remains visible to Malayalam readers.

βδελυγμένος (bdelygmenos) — “detestable, abominable”

  • Literal meaning: perfect passive participle of βδελύσσομαι, “to be abhorred/detested”
  • Semantic range: moral revulsion before God, associated elsewhere in the NT with idolatrous and unclean practices
  • English variants: detestable, abominable, vile
  • Contextual theological meaning: in context (paired with idolaters, sorcerers, liars) this denotes those given over to morally corrupting, idol-entangled practices
  • Malayalam rendering: CAUTION — do not use മ്ലേച്ഛൻ. Recommended rendering: നിന്ദ്യപ്രവൃത്തിക്കാർ (nindyapravruthikkar, “those who do detestable deeds”) or ഹീനകൃത്യം ചെയ്യുന്നവർ. Risk: High — the common Malayalam word മ്ലേച്ഛൻ, while dictionary-accurate for “detestable person,” carries a historical caste-purity/pollution connotation in traditional Malayalam usage (a term sometimes applied pejoratively to ritually “impure” outsiders). Using it here risks readers hearing a caste/ritual-purity judgment rather than Paul’s/John’s moral-idolatry judgment — the same category of collision the Romans baseline documents for ജാതികള്‍ vs. ജനതകള്‍. A periphrastic rendering focused on “detestable deeds” rather than a caste-coded noun for “detestable person” is required.

φονεύς (phoneus) — “murderer”

  • Literal meaning: one who kills, murderer
  • Contextual theological meaning: standard vice-list term; low ambiguity
  • Malayalam rendering: കൊലപാതകികള്‍ (kolapathakikal). Risk: Low.

πόρνος (pornos) — “sexually immoral person”

  • Literal meaning: one who engages in πορνεία (sexual immorality)
  • Contextual theological meaning: standard vice-list term, shares a root with πόρνη (“prostitute,” the title for Babylon in ch.17), reinforcing the moral-spiritual link between personal immorality and the Babylon-system’s corruption
  • Malayalam rendering: ജാരന്‍മാര്‍/ധാര്‍മ്മികഭ്രംശം കാണിക്കുന്നവര്‍ (moral-corruption doers). Risk: Medium — should be cross-referenced with the ch.17 term for “prostitute” (വേശ്യ) so the shared Greek root’s rhetorical link is visible to reviewers even though Malayalam requires different surface words for person-vice vs. the personified city.

φαρμακός (pharmakos) — “sorcerer”

  • Literal meaning: one who practices φαρμακεία — originally “one who uses drugs/potions,” extended to magical/occult practice
  • Semantic range: sorcery, occult magical practice, often linked to idolatry (cf. Gal 5:20)
  • English variants: sorcerer, magician, one who practices magic arts
  • Contextual theological meaning: condemnation of occult power-seeking as rival to trusting God’s sovereign power (ties to “The Sovereignty of God over History”)
  • Malayalam rendering: മന്ത്രവാദികള്‍ (manthravadikal, “practitioners of magic/sorcery”). Risk: High — Kerala has an active folk-religious tradition of മന്ത്രവാദം (folk sorcery/exorcism practice) still practiced in some rural and traditional contexts alongside, and sometimes blended with, both Hindu and folk-Christian popular religion; the term names a real, current practice in Kerala rather than an abstract or foreign vice, giving this vice-list entry unusually direct local relevance and requiring a pastorally careful translator note rather than a purely lexical one.

εἰδωλολάτρης (eidololatres) — “idolater”

  • Literal meaning: worshiper of εἴδωλον (idol/image)
  • Semantic range: one who worships images/idols instead of the true God
  • English variants: idolater, idol-worshiper
  • Contextual theological meaning: violates the exclusive worship demanded throughout Revelation (see “Worship of the Lamb” doctrine, ch.4-5, 19, 22 below); in context, primarily addresses emperor-cult and pagan-temple worship of the first century
  • Malayalam rendering: വിഗ്രഹാരാധകര്‍ (vigrahaaradhakar, “idol-worshipers”). Risk: High — this is one of the most pastorally sensitive terms in the entire glossary for a Malayalam-speaking context, since the majority of Kerala’s population practices Hindu image/murti veneration. Translator and teaching notes must make clear that this vice list addresses spiritual allegiance and final judgment on unrepentant idolatry as a category of Scripture’s own making (echoing OT prophetic vocabulary already used respectfully within Malayalam’s own settled Bible tradition for nearly two millennia), and must not be read, taught, or applied as a blanket denunciation of Hindu neighbors; the term’s use in interfaith-sensitive teaching contexts should follow the same careful, non-inflammatory pattern already modeled in the Romans baseline’s handling of ജനതകള്‍/ജാതികള്‍.

ψεύστης (pseustes) — “liar”

  • Literal meaning: one who lies
  • Contextual theological meaning: contrasts with “faithful and true” (v.5; 19:11); final vice in the list, standing for all falsehood opposed to God’s truth
  • Malayalam rendering: വ്യാജം പറയുന്നവര്‍ (vyajam paranjunnavar). Risk: Low.

λίμνη [ἡ καιομένη] πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ (limne [he kaiomene] pyri kai theio) — “the lake burning with fire and sulfur”

  • Literal meaning: lake, being burned, with fire and sulfur/brimstone
  • Semantic range: the place of final, eternal punishment for the devil, the beast, the false prophet, and unrepentant humanity (19:20; 20:10,14-15); to be distinguished sharply from Hades (ᾍδης, the interim abode of the dead, ch.1,6,20) and from the abyss (ἄβυσσος, the temporary prison of demonic powers, ch.9,20) — three distinct Greek terms for three distinct realities
  • English variants: lake of fire, lake of fire and brimstone/sulfur
  • Contextual theological meaning: the final, irreversible place of judgment — central to “Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints”
  • Malayalam rendering: അഗ്നിയും ഗന്ധകവും കത്തുന്ന കടല്‍/തടാകം (agniyum gandhakavum kathunna kadal/thadakam, “the lake/sea burning with fire and sulfur”), shortened in running text to അഗ്നിക്കടല്‍ (agnikkadal). Risk: High — the translation must not collapse this term into a single generic Malayalam word for “hell” (നരകം) that is also used for the very different Hindu/Buddhist conceptual category of a temporary, karma-linked, purgative punishment tied to the cycle of rebirth; the lake of fire in Revelation is final and everlasting, not cyclical or reformative. Distinct Malayalam terms must also be maintained for Hades (see ch.1, ch.20 below) and the abyss (see ch.9 below) so all three are not flattened into one word.

θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος (thanatos ho deuteros) — “the second death”

  • Literal meaning: death, the second
  • Semantic range: first appears at 2:11; recurs at 20:6,14 and here; defined explicitly at 20:14 as being “thrown into the lake of fire” — i.e., final, eternal separation from God, not a second biological death and certainly not a second earthly life/rebirth
  • English variants: the second death
  • Contextual theological meaning: the ultimate negative counterpart to eternal life; overcomers are explicitly promised exemption from it (2:11)
  • Malayalam rendering: രണ്ടാം മരണം (randam maranam). Risk: High — the numeral “second” invites exactly the wrong association in a Malayalam context shaped partly by reincarnation-adjacent vocabulary (already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline for “resurrection,” ഉയിര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേല്‍പ്പ് vs. പുനര്‍ജന്മം); a translator note must state explicitly that “second death” denotes a single, final, eternal state of separation from God, not a second cycle of death-and-rebirth.

Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon

TermsVariantsTheological meaningMalayalamRisk
Dragon
δράκων (drakon)
a large serpent-monster, dragon
dragon, serpent-dragon
the definitive symbol of Satan’s cosmic opposition to God and his peopleമഹാസര്‍പ്പംCritical — Kerala-specific. Kerala has a widespread, still-active tradition of serpent veneration (നാഗാരാധന, Naga worship), including household serpent groves (സര്‍പ്പക്കാവ്) and major shrines (e.g., Mannarasala). A bare rendering as “great serpent” risks unintended positive/sacred resonance completely absent from the source text’s meaning. Revelation itself immediately disambiguates by appending the explicit identification “the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan” (12:9; 20:2); the Malayalam translation MUST preserve this full appositional identification at every occurrence and MUST NOT allow മഹാസര്‍പ്പം to stand alone without it. This is the clearest Malayalam-specific parallel to the Romans baseline’s അവതാരം warning for incarnation: not an existing failure of Christian tradition, but a live risk of collision with the dominant non-Christian religious corpus.
Ancient serpent
ὁ ὄφις ὁ ἀρχαῖος (ho ophis ho archaios)
the ancient/original serpent
the ancient serpent
identifies the dragon with the Genesis 3 serpentപുരാതന സര്‍പ്പംCritical (same note as above)
Devil / Satan

Chapter 13 — The Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Earth

TermsVariantsTheological meaningMalayalamRisk
Beast (from the sea/earth)
θηρίον (therion)
monstrous wild beast
beast, the Beast
the dragon’s political/religious agent(s) of counterfeit power and worship demandമഹാമൃഗംHigh
Mark of the beast
τὸ χάραγμα τοῦ θηρίου (to charagma tou theriou)
an engraved stamp/brand
mark of the beast
the beast’s counterfeit ownership-mark, the deliberate negative counterpart to God’s positive seal (σφραγίς, ch.7)മഹാമൃഗത്തിന്‍റെ അടയാളംCritical — the Malayalam word chosen for χάραγμα MUST be different from the word used for God’s positive seal (മുദ്ര, ch.7). Recommended: use അടയാളം (charagma, negative mark) consistently distinct from മുദ്ര (sphragis, positive seal), so the deliberate divine/demonic ownership-mark contrast Revelation constructs is not blurred in translation
Number of the beast (666)
ὁ ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, χξς΄
the number of the beast, 666
666, number of the beast
symbolic numerology of imperfection/counterfeit (short of the perfect 7)മഹാമൃഗത്തിന്‍റെ സംഖ്യ, അറുനൂറ്റി അറുപത്തിയാറ്Medium — “Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation” note essential to prevent speculative numerological identification-hunting in teaching contexts
Worship (of the beast)
προσκυνέω (proskyneo)
bow down in homage
worship
the counterfeit worship demanded by the beast, using the SAME Greek verb used for true worship of God/the Lamb elsewhere — the deliberate parallel is the entire pointആരാധിക്കുകCritical — this verb must be rendered with the SAME Malayalam word in every occurrence throughout the book, whether the object is God, the Lamb, an angel (wrongly, 19:10/22:8-9), or the beast/dragon/idols. Using different Malayalam words for “true worship” vs. “false worship” would erase Revelation’s central polemical device: false worship is presented as a horrifying mimicry of true worship, not a separate, lesser category of act

I saw no temple in it
no temple
God’s and the Lamb’s direct, unmediated presence fulfills and supersedes the temple system — reuses baseline’s ദൈവം/കര്‍ത്താവ് (Critical) and connects to Romans’ church doctrine (സഭ)അതില്‍ ദൈവാലയം ഒന്നും ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടില്ലHigh — must be framed as fulfillment (God himself as the temple), not as a devaluation of temple/worship structures generally, for pastoral clarity
Nations bring their glory
τὰ ἔθνη … τὴν δόξαν αὐτῶν
the nations bring their glory
glory of the nations
reuses baseline’s ജനതകള്‍ (nations, never ജാതികള്‍) and മഹത്വം (glory) — universal ingathering theme continuing “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” from the Romans baselineജനതകള്‍ അവരുടെ മഹത്വം കൊണ്ടുവരുംMedium

Worship God (angel refuses worship)
προσκύνησον τῷ θεῷ (proskyneson to theo)
worship God!
worship God (not the angel/messenger)
John’s own attempted worship of the revealing angel is explicitly rebuked (19:10; 22:8-9) — the single clearest statement in the book that worship (προσκυνέω) belongs to God/the Lamb aloneദൈവത്തെ ആരാധിക്കCritical — this scene is the book’s own internal safeguard against venerating any created intermediary (however exalted); given Kerala’s rich devotional tradition of intercessory veneration of saints and Mary (already flagged as an internal denominational-emphasis point, not a doctrinal error, in the Romans baseline’s “intercession” note), this passage should be taught with the same careful, non-polemical framing established there — as Revelation’s own teaching point about exclusive worship of God, not a corrective aimed at any specific Malayalam Christian tradition’s devotional practice
Do not seal up the words of this prophecy
μὴ σφραγίσῃς τοὺς λόγους τῆς προφητείας
do not seal the words of the prophecy
do not seal up
reuses σφραγίζω (seal, ch.7) in a contrasting sense: unlike Daniel’s prophecy (sealed until the end, Dan 12:4), this prophecy is to remain open/available nowഈ പ്രവചനത്തിന്‍റെ വാക്കുകള്‍ മുദ്രവയ്ക്കരുത്Medium

closing prayer of longing for Christ’s return, echoing 1 Cor 16:22’s Aramaic “Marana tha” — reuses baseline’s ആമേന്‍, കര്‍ത്താവ് (Critical), യേശു (Critical)ആമേന്‍, കര്‍ത്താവായ യേശുവേ, വരേണമേCritical — must use the exact baseline forms for “Lord” (കര്‍ത്താവ്) and “Jesus” (യേശു) with no substitution

Part 3 — Kerala-Specific Critical Risk Summary (Cross-Cutting)

The following risks are distinctive to Malayalam/Kerala and recur across many chapters; they are consolidated here for reviewer attention:

  1. Dragon/serpent (δράκων, ὄφις) — Critical, Kerala-specific. Never render without the accompanying explicit “devil/Satan” identification the Greek text itself supplies (12:9; 20:2), given Kerala’s living serpent-veneration tradition (Naga worship, sarpa kavu shrines).
  2. Seven spirits (τὰ ἑπτὰ πνεύματα) — Critical. Must never be taught/translated as implying multiple spirit-beings distinct from the one Holy Spirit (πνεῦμα ἅγιον, reused Critical baseline term).
  3. Three distinct afterlife/judgment terms — High. Hades (ᾍδης, പാതാളം), abyss (ἄβυσσος, അഗാധം), and lake of fire (λίμνη τοῦ πυρός, അഗ്നിക്കടല്‍) must remain three distinct Malayalam terms, never collapsed into a single word for “hell” (നരകം), to avoid conflation with Hindu/Buddhist notions of a temporary, karma-linked, cyclical punishment.
  4. Seal vs. mark (σφραγίς vs. χάραγμα) — Critical. God’s positive seal on his people and the beast’s negative mark must use two distinct Malayalam terms (മുദ്ര vs. അടയാളം) to preserve the deliberate divine/demonic ownership-mark contrast.
  5. Worship consistency (προσκυνέω) — Critical. The same Malayalam verb (ആരാധിക്കുക) must be used whether the object of worship is God, the Lamb, an angel (wrongly), or the beast/idols, since the text’s polemical force depends on true and false worship using the identical verb.
  6. Idolater / sorcerer (εἰδωλολάτρης / φαρμακός) — High. These vice-list terms name practices still active in Kerala’s religious landscape (image veneration; folk mantravadam); pastoral framing must avoid blanket condemnation of neighbors and stay within Scripture’s own moral-theological category.
  7. Detestable (βδελυγμένος) — High. Avoid the caste-purity-coded Malayalam term മ്ലേച്ഛൻ; use a periphrastic rendering focused on deeds, paralleling the baseline’s ജനതകള്‍/ജാതികള്‍ caution.
  8. Bride vs. prostitute (νύμφη vs. πόρνη) — High. These are a deliberate literary antithesis (chs. 17-19, 21) and must be kept terminologically distinct and cross-referenced for translators.
  9. Second death / thousand years — High/Medium. Numeric and “second” language must be explicitly distinguished from reincarnation-adjacent Malayalam vocabulary, consistent with the baseline’s existing caution on ഉയിര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേല്‍പ്പ് vs. പുനര്‍ജന്മം.
