Core Glossary

08 Core Glossary — Philemon — English → Malayalam

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the entire book of Philemon (vv.1–25). Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [TM] and reused exactly as recorded — no alternative renderings are proposed for these. New terms specific to Philemon’s vocabulary are marked [NEW] and proposed for addition to translation memory with the risk tier and notes below, following the same risk framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json.

B. New Terms Introduced by Philemon [NEW — proposed for translation memory]

English glossGreek (transliteration)Malayalam renderingTransliterationRiskDoctrine categoryNotes / rejected alternatives
slave / bondservantδοῦλος (doulos)അടിമadimaHighSlavery and the Gospel’s Transforming PowerCentral term of the letter (1:16). Kerala’s own history of caste-linked agrestic slavery (abolished 1855 Travancore/1854 Cochin) gives അടിമ direct, felt historical resonance for Malayalam readers. Must not be softened to a vague “servant” term, which would blunt Paul’s deliberate contrast with ἀδελφός; must also not be taught as if the NT endorses the institution. Human theologian review required for every occurrence and for accompanying teaching notes.
brother (fellow believer)ἀδελφός (adelphos)സഹോദരൻsahodaranMediumChristian Brotherhood across Social StatusExtended in 1:16 to a former slave — the doctrinal climax of the letter. Feminine: ἀδελφή → സഹോദരി (sahodari), 1:2.
belovedἀγαπητός (agapētos)പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടpriyappettaLow-MediumChristian BrotherhoodApplied to Philemon (1:1) and to Onesimus (1:16).
loveἀγάπη (agapē)സ്നേഹംsnehamMediumGrace-Motivated ObedienceStated basis of Paul’s appeal (1:9), contrasted with authoritative command (1:8).

inward affection / heartσπλάγχνα (splanchna)ഉള്ളംullamMedium-HighIntercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another; ReconciliationRecurs at 1:7, 12, 20 forming a deliberate literary/theological thread (“hearts refreshed” → “my very heart” → “refresh my heart”). Consistency across all three occurrences is essential; inconsistent rendering would erase Paul’s inclusio. Flag for native-speaker review.
refresh / give restἀναπαύω (anapauō)ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുകaashwasippikkukaMediumReconciliation1:7 (ἀναπέπαυται), 1:20 (ἀνάπαυσόν); must be rendered consistently with σπλάγχνα above to preserve the inclusio.
boldness / confidence (to command)παρρησία (parrēsia)ധൈര്യംdhairyamMediumGrace-Motivated Obedience1:8; conveys the authority Paul possesses but declines to exercise. Requires translator note on the “right to command” nuance lost in a plain “courage” rendering.
commandἐπιτάξαι (epitaxai)കൽപ്പിക്കുകkalppikkukaLow1:8.
what is fitting / proper dutyτὸ ἀνῆκον (to anēkon)ഉചിതമായത്uchithamayathuMediumGrace-Motivated Obedience1:8; must not be rendered with a strong law/duty term (avoid dharma-adjacent connotations, per TM law/righteousness cautions).
old man / elder (textual variant: ambassador)πρεσβύτης (presbytēs) [v.l. πρεσβευτής]വൃദ്ധൻvrudhanMedium1:9; mandatory footnote on the ambassador variant reading and its rhetorical implications. Requires theologian sign-off on which reading to follow.
prisoner / bound oneδέσμιος (desmios)ബന്ധിതൻbandhithanLow-Medium1:1, 9, 10, 13, 23. Recommend ബന്ധിതൻ consistently across all five occurrences.
spiritual childτέκνον (teknon)മകൻmakanMediumAdoption/Reconciliation (related, distinct from TM adoption)1:10; Paul’s own spiritual-paternal claim over Onesimus — distinct from TM adoption (ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം), which describes God’s adoption of believers.
beget (spiritually)ἐγέννησα (egennēsa, from γεννάω)ജനിപ്പിച്ചുjanippichuMedium1:10; describes Paul’s instrumental role in Onesimus’s conversion, not the divine regenerating act itself.
uselessἄχρηστος (achrēstos)പ്രയോജനമില്ലാത്തവൻprayojanamillathavanMediumSlavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power1:11; wordplay with Ὀνήσιμος’s name, untranslatable in Malayalam script — requires translator footnote paired with εὔχρηστος below.
usefulεὔχρηστος (euchrēstos)പ്രയോജനമുള്ളവൻprayojanamullavanMediumSlavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power1:11; see ἄχρηστος note above.

consent / opinionγνώμη (gnōmē)സമ്മതംsammathamMediumGrace-Motivated Obedience1:14; must convey full consent, not mere “opinion.”
compulsion / necessityἀνάγκη (anankē)നിർബന്ധംnirbandhamMediumGrace-Motivated Obedience1:14; must contrast sharply with ἑκούσιον below.
the goodτὸ ἀγαθόν (to agathon)നന്മnanmaLow1:14.
voluntary / of one’s own free willἑκούσιον (hekousion)സ്വമനസ്സാലെsvamanassaleHighGrace-Motivated Obedience1:14; the letter’s doctrinal hinge-term for grace-vs-compulsion ethics, directly paralleling Romans’ grace/works contrast. A weak rendering (e.g., “gladly”) would sever the deliberate ἀνάγκη/ἑκούσιον contrast.
separateχωρίζω (chōrizō)വേർപിരിയുകverpiriyukaMediumProvidence1:15; passive voice may carry a providential-passive sense requiring careful construction.
eternal / foreverαἰώνιος (aiōnios)എന്നേക്കുംennekkumMediumReconciliation1:15; applied uniquely to a restored human relationship rather than to God/eternal life; not yet in baseline TM despite broader NT importance.
in the flesh (social/human sphere)ἐν σαρκί (en sarki)ജഡത്തിൽjadathilMediumChristian Brotherhood across Social Status1:16; a distinct, more neutral use of σάρξ than Romans 7-8’s sin-nature sense — translator note required to prevent conflation.
partner / sharerκοινωνός (koinōnos)പങ്കാളിpankaliMediumChristian Brotherhood1:17; personal/relational noun cognate of TM fellowship (κοινωνία), applied here to a specific interpersonal request for equal reception.
receive / welcomeπροσλαμβάνω (proslambanō)സ്വീകരിക്കുകsweekarikkukaLowChristian Brotherhood1:17.
wrong / do injustice toἀδικέω (adikeō)അന്യായം ചെയ്യുക / ദ്രോഹിക്കുകanyayam cheyyuka / drohikkukaMediumForgiveness and Reconciliation1:18; must convey genuine wrongdoing so the forgiveness that follows is meaningful.
owe / be indebtedὀφείλω (opheilō)കടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുകkadappettirikkukaMediumForgiveness and Reconciliation1:18-19; commercial-debt language paralleling forgiveness-as-debt-cancellation imagery.
charge to one’s accountἐλλογάω (ellogaō)കണക്കിൽ ചേർക്കുകkanakkil chērkkukaHighForgiveness and Reconciliation (typological echo of Justification)1:18; Paul’s offer to have Onesimus’s debt transferred to himself is the letter’s closest verbal echo of substitutionary atonement/imputation theology (cf. TM imputed_righteousness, Critical). Flag for theologian review; cross-reference required.
repay in fullἀποτίνω (apotinō)വീട്ടിക്കൊടുക്കുകveettikkodukkukaMedium-HighForgiveness and Reconciliation1:19; continues the substitutionary-payment picture from ἐλλογάω; render as a connected pledge with v.18.
owe besides / owe in additionπροσοφείλω (prosopheilō)കൂടുതൽ കടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുകkoodutal kadappettirikkukaMediumIntercession and Appeal1:19; rhetorical reversal (Philemon owes Paul more) must remain clear in Malayalam emphasis/word order.
have benefit/joy of (wordplay with “Onesimus”)ὀνίνημι, ὀναίμην (oninēmi, onaimēn)പ്രയോജനം ലഭിക്കട്ടെprayojanam labhikkatteMediumSlavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power1:20; second wordplay on Onesimus’s name, requires translator footnote linking to 1:10-11.
obedience (standalone, general sense)ὑπακοή (hypakoē)അനുസരണംanusaranamMediumGrace-Motivated Obedience1:21; distinct from the fixed TM compound obedience_of_faith (വിശ്വാസത്തിന്‍റെ അനുസരണം); must be read together with ἑκούσιον (1:14) — Paul trusts Philemon to obey freely, not under obligation.
confidence / trustπεποιθώς, from πείθω (pepoithōs, peithō)ഉറപ്പോടെ / ആശ്രയിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്urappode / aashrayichukonduLow-Medium1:21.
hospitality / guest roomξενία (xenia)സൽക്കാരമുറിsalkkaramuriLowChristian Fellowship1:22; positive, culturally resonant term given Kerala’s own hospitality traditions.
hopeἐλπίς / ἐλπίζω (elpis / elpizō)പ്രത്യാശprathyashaMediumIntercession and Appeal1:22; major Pauline theme absent from the baseline Romans TM despite its prominence elsewhere in Paul (Romans 5, 8, 15); proposed for addition. Must convey confident, God-grounded expectation, not fatalistic wishing.
granted as a favor / given freelyχαρίζομαι, here χαρισθήσομαι (charizomai, charisthēsomai)കൃപയാൽ നൽകപ്പെടുംkrupayaal nalkappedumMediumGrace1:22; verb cognate of TM grace (χάρις/കൃപ) — Paul frames his own hoped-for release in the vocabulary of grace. Cross-reference note recommended.
greetἀσπάζομαι (aspazomai)വന്ദനം അറിയിക്കുന്നുvandanam ariyikkunnuLow1:23; standard epistolary convention.
fellow prisoner (captive-of-war image)συναιχμάλωτος (synaichmalōtos)സഹതടവുകാരൻsahathadavukaranLow-Medium1:23; more vivid than δέσμιος — a military-captive image.
spirit (human, in benediction)πνεῦμα (pneuma)ആത്മാവ്aathmavuLow1:25; must be distinguished from TM holy_spirit (പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്, Critical) — this is the addressees’ human spirit, not the Holy Spirit.

Note: Ὀνήσιμος’s name-meaning (“useful/profitable”) is essential exegetical background for 1:11 and 1:20’s wordplay and should be preserved as a translator/teaching note rather than attempted in the transliteration itself, since Malayalam script cannot carry the pun.

D. Highest-Priority Risk Flags for Phase 2 Review

The following terms require human theologian review for every occurrence, per the same escalation logic as the baseline Romans doctrine risk registry:

  1. δοῦλος → അടിമ (slave) — High risk; central to “Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power”; Kerala caste-slavery history resonance.
  2. ἑκούσιον → സ്വമനസ്സാലെ (voluntary) — High risk; doctrinal hinge of “Grace-Motivated Obedience.”
  3. ἐλλογάω → കണക്കിൽ ചേർക്കുക (charge to account) — High risk; typological echo of Critical-risk imputed_righteousness.
  4. ἀποτίνω → വീട്ടിക്കൊടുക്കുക (repay) — Medium-High; paired with ἐλλογάω as a single substitutionary-payment unit.
  5. σπλάγχνα → ഉള്ളം (inward affection/heart) — Medium-High; cross-verse consistency (1:7, 12, 20) required to preserve the letter’s inclusio.
  6. πρεσβύτης → വൃδhan (old man/elder; textual variant ἀμβασ്sador) — Medium; textual-critical decision affecting the whole letter’s rhetorical reading.

All other [NEW] terms above are recommended for native speaker review (Medium risk) or automated review (Low risk) per the standard tiering, consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json’s review-routing convention.

Critical Risk Terms

Lord

Approved rendering: കര്‍ത്താവ്
Transliteration: karthavu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at Philemon 1:3, 5, 16, 20, 25, including the relational formula ἐν κυρίῳ (‘in the Lord’) at 1:16 and 1:20. Must convey exclusive, supreme Lordship in every occurrence.

Jesus

Approved rendering: യേശു
Transliteration: yeshu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout Philemon’s opening, thanksgiving, and closing (1:1, 3, 5, 9, 23, 25). Use the ecumenical Satyavedapustakam form, not the Syriac liturgical ഈശോ, for this curriculum’s Bible-study register.

Messiah

Approved rendering: ക്രിസ്തു
Transliteration: kristu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout Philemon as part of the standard ‘Christ Jesus’ / ‘in Christ’ formulas (1:1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 20, 23, 25). ക്രിസ്തു required; മിശിഹാ remains a legitimate but unused liturgical alternative.

Father

Approved rendering: പിതാവ്
Transliteration: pithavu
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Invoked in Philemon’s opening greeting (1:3). Standard, unambiguous term.

Imputed Righteousness

Approved rendering: ആരോപിതനീതി
Transliteration: aropithaneethi
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: സമ്പാദിച്ച നീതി

Inherited from Romans package. Philemon 1:18-19’s commercial-legal debt-transfer language (ἐλλογάω/ἀποτίνω) is the letter’s closest verbal echo of this Critical-risk doctrine, but must be taught as a vivid human-scale TYPE, not the doctrine of justification itself. Cross-reference required whenever ‘charge_to_account’ or ‘repay_in_full’ (below) are used.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്
Transliteration: parishudhathmavu
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ബ്രഹ്മം, പരമാത്മാവ്

Inherited from Romans package. Not used directly in Philemon; referenced only for contrast at 1:25, where πνεῦμα denotes the addressees’ own HUMAN spirit, not the Holy Spirit. See NEW term ‘human_spirit’ below; the two must never be conflated in teaching material.

High Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: കൃപ
Transliteration: krupa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: പുണ്യം
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. In Philemon 1:3 and 1:25 (standard epistolary formula) and via the cognate verb χαρίζομαι at 1:22 (Paul’s own hoped-for release, ‘granted as a favor’), the source of grace must remain visibly Christ-rooted, not bhakti-style devotee-merited favor. The 1:22 wordplay linking Paul’s personal release to grace-theology must stay recoverable; see NEW term ‘granted_as_favor’ below.

Saints

Approved rendering: വിശുദ്ധര്‍
Transliteration: vishudhar
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. The same inverted-risk caution applies at Philemon 1:5 and 1:7: Kerala’s Catholic/Orthodox tradition of canonized saints (e.g. St. Alphonsa) risks readers hearing വിശുദ്ധര്‍ as a narrow, formally recognized class rather than every ordinary member of Philemon’s small house church.

Slave

Approved rendering: അടിമ
Transliteration: adima
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Rejected alternatives: സേവകൻ
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Slavery and Social Ethics

Central term of the letter (1:16, and implicit throughout 1:10-20). Kerala’s own history of legally sanctioned, caste-linked agrestic slavery (particularly of Pulayar, Parayar, and other historically oppressed communities), abolished in Travancore (1855) and Cochin (1854), gives അടിമ direct, felt regional resonance. Must not be softened to a vague ‘servant’ (blunting Paul’s deliberate contrast with ἀδελφός), and must never be taught as if the New Testament sanctions the institution of slavery. Human theologian review required for every occurrence and every accompanying teaching note.

Inward Affection

Approved rendering: ഉള്ളം
Transliteration: ullam
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: ഹൃദയം, കരുണ
Original: σπλάγχνα
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

σπλάγχνα recurs at 1:7, 1:12, and 1:20, forming a deliberate literary/theological inclusio (saints’ hearts refreshed → Onesimus as Paul’s own heart → ‘refresh my heart’). This is the greatest translation-CONSISTENCY risk in the letter: use ഉള്ളം identically at all three occurrences, never varying to ഹൃദയം or കരുണ at even one. Requires a dedicated cross-verse consistency QA check in Phase 2 in addition to native-speaker review.

Voluntary

Approved rendering: സ്വമനസ്സാലെ
Transliteration: svamanassale
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: സന്തോഷത്തോടെ
Original: ἑκούσιον
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

ἑκούσιον at 1:14: the letter’s doctrinal hinge-term, directly paralleling Romans’ grace/works contrast. NEVER weaken to a plain ‘gladly’ (സന്തോഷത്തോടെ), which would sever the deliberate ἀνάγκη/ἑκούσιον contrast and obscure the letter’s central grace-versus-compulsion logic. Must also be read together with ‘obedience_standalone’ (1:21) below: Paul trusts Philemon to obey freely, not that Philemon is obligated to comply.

Charge To Account

Approved rendering: കണക്കിൽ ചേർക്കുക
Transliteration: kanakkil chērkkuka
Doctrine: Typological Substitutionary Satisfaction
Rejected alternatives: ക്ഷമ
Original: ἐλλογάω
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

ἐλλογάω at 1:18: Paul offers to have Onesimus’s entire debt legally transferred to himself. This is Philemon’s closest verbal echo of the Critical-risk Romans doctrine of imputed righteousness (ആരോപിതനീതി). NEVER substitute the generic forgiveness word ക്ഷമ into this verse-level rendering — that would erase the deliberate commercial-legal register Paul chose. Flag for theologian review and cross-reference the Romans imputed_righteousness doctrine note; treat together with ‘repay_in_full’ below as a single connected pledge.

Repay In Full

Approved rendering: വീട്ടിക്കൊടുക്കും
Transliteration: veettikkodukkum
Doctrine: Typological Substitutionary Satisfaction
Original: ἀποτίνω
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

ἀποτίνω at 1:19: Paul personally guarantees, in his own handwriting, to repay whatever Onesimus owes — continuing the substitutionary-payment picture begun with ‘charge_to_account’. Consistency between the two verses’ commercial-legal vocabulary must be maintained so ‘charge it to me / I will repay’ reads as a single connected pledge, mirroring how atonement theology pictures Christ’s payment of a debt he did not incur.

Medium Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: സുവിശേഷം
Transliteration: suvisesham
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. In Philemon 1:13, names the cause for which Paul is imprisoned (‘the chains of the gospel’), reframing imprisonment as gospel service rather than misfortune; the Philemon doctrine registry raises the doctrine-level risk to High for review-routing purposes even though the term itself is Medium risk, since the consequence of flattening this reframing is severe.

Faith

Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസം
Transliteration: vishwasam
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ഭക്തി
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Philemon 1:5-6 reports Philemon’s own faith, paired with love; keep distinct from ഭക്തി (devotional reverence).

Church

Approved rendering: സഭ
Transliteration: sabha
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: അമ്പലം
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. In Philemon 1:2, specifically the congregation meeting in Philemon’s own household; see NEW term ‘house_church’ below for the full compound phrase, which must carry full ecclesial weight.

God

Approved rendering: ദൈവം
Transliteration: daivam
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ഭഗവാന്‍
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Invoked in Philemon’s opening greeting and thanksgiving (1:3-4). Note: this book’s own bible_term_registry.json escalates this term’s doctrine-level risk to Critical for review routing given its foundational role, though the baseline lexical entry itself is Medium.

Intercession

Approved rendering: മധ്യസ്ഥത
Transliteration: madhyasthatha
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: παράκλησις / ἐλπίζω (contextual: prayer and appeal on another’s behalf)
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. In Philemon, this is Paul’s own human, personal appeal on Onesimus’s behalf (1:9-10, 17-19, 22) — a THIRD register distinct from both the Spirit’s intercession (Romans 8:26-27) and Kerala Catholic/Orthodox devotional intercession through Mary and canonized saints. Label explicitly as ‘Paul’s personal appeal’ (പൗലോസിന്‍റെ വ്യക്തിപരമായ അപേക്ഷ) at first teaching use to avoid register-blurring.

Providence

Approved rendering: ദൈവത്തിന്‍റെ പരിപാലനം
Transliteration: daivathinte paripalanam
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: വിധി
Original: ἐχωρίσθη (passive of χωρίζω, cf. Romans 8:28’s πρόνοια concept)
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Philemon 1:15’s passive ἐχωρίσθη (‘he was separated’) is often read as a providential passive; Malayalam’s active-voice-preferring register may need a careful construction to preserve this without collapsing into വിധി (fate) or popular fatalism idioms. Doctrine-level risk escalated to High in this book’s registry given the letter’s compressed argument.

Adoption

Approved rendering: ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം
Transliteration: dattuputhratvam
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ദത്തെടുക്കല്‍

Inherited from Romans package. Referenced conceptually, not directly translated, in Philemon: God’s own adoptive act must be kept distinct from Paul’s personal spiritual-paternal claim over Onesimus at 1:10 (see NEW term ‘spiritual_child’ below).

Obedience Of Faith

Approved rendering: വിശ്വാസത്തിന്‍റെ അനുസരണം
Transliteration: vishwasathinte anusaranam
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: മതപരമായ കടമ

Inherited from Romans package. This fixed compound (Romans 1:5/16:26) must NOT be silently expanded into at Philemon 1:21, where ὑπακοή stands alone with a narrower, general sense of Philemon’s responsiveness to Paul’s appeal. See NEW term ‘obedience_standalone’ below.

Brother

Approved rendering: സഹോദരൻ
Transliteration: sahodaran
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: ἀδελφός / ἀδελφή
Category: Church

Feminine: സഹോദരി (sahodari), 1:2. Applied to Timothy and Apphia, and climactically to Onesimus the former slave (1:16) — the doctrinal climax of the letter. Distinctively for Malayalam, സഹോദരൻ is also the operative word in Kerala’s own early-20th-century anti-caste fraternity movement (e.g. Sahodaran Ayyappan’s 1917 Sahodara Sangham); this adds positive rhetorical power but must be anchored to ἐν κυρίῳ/ἐν Χριστῷ wherever the Greek supplies it (1:16, 1:20), so brotherhood remains textually marked as Christ-grounded, not merely a social-reform claim.

Beloved

Approved rendering: പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട
Transliteration: priyappetta
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: ἀγαπητός
Category: Church

Applied to Philemon (1:1) and, decisively, to Onesimus (1:16). Consistency across both occurrences reinforces the letter’s brotherhood theme.

Love

Approved rendering: സ്നേഹം
Transliteration: sneham
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith

Stated basis of Paul’s appeal (1:9), deliberately contrasted with the authoritative-command option Paul sets aside (1:8). സ്നേഹം is the ordinary, warm Malayalam word for love across every register (romantic, familial, divine); context must make clear this is self-giving covenantal love, not sentiment alone.

House Church

Approved rendering: ഭവനത്തിലെ സഭ
Transliteration: bhavanathile sabha
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: κατ’ οἶκόν ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

Philemon 1:2’s κατ’ οἶκόν ἐκκλησία. Must not be rendered as a lesser or informal ‘sub-church’; carries full ecclesial weight in the apostolic era, resonant with Malayalam Christianity’s own long history of home- and kin-based fellowship gatherings alongside formal denominational structures.

Boldness To Command

Approved rendering: ധൈര്യം
Transliteration: dhairyam
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: παρρησία
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

παρρησία at 1:8: the apostolic standing Paul possesses but declines to exercise. ധൈര്യം (boldness/confidence) is the closest natural term but has no exact equivalent for the Greek civic ‘right to command’ nuance; attach a mandatory translator note explaining this background so the verse’s rhetorical setup is not flattened to plain courage.

Fitting Duty

Approved rendering: ഉചിതമായത്
Transliteration: uchithamayathu
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: ധര്‍മ്മം
Original: τὸ ἀνῆκον
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

τὸ ἀνῆκον at 1:8: what is proper/fitting, not a legal obligation — duty-language Paul could invoke but sets aside in favor of love (1:9). Must never be rendered with a strong duty/law term evoking ധര്‍മ്മം-style cosmic-duty connotations, per the established Romans caution on law/righteousness.

Elder Or Ambassador

Approved rendering: വൃദ്ധൻ
Transliteration: vrudhan
Doctrine: Suffering for the Gospel / Apostolic Bonds
Original: πρεσβύτης (v.l. πρεσβευτής)
Category: Apostleship

πρεσβύτης (majority reading, ‘old man/elder’) at 1:9, with a well-known manuscript variant πρεσβευτής (‘ambassador/envoy’). A textual-critical fork with real rhetorical consequences (vulnerable elder vs. commissioned apostolic authority set aside); render the majority reading വൃദ്ധൻ as primary, with a MANDATORY footnote presenting the ambassador variant, and escalate to theologian sign-off before finalizing which reading anchors the lesson’s argument.

Prisoner

Approved rendering: ബന്ധിതൻ
Transliteration: bandhithan
Doctrine: Suffering for the Gospel / Apostolic Bonds
Rejected alternatives: തടവുകാരൻ
Original: δέσμιος
Category: Apostleship

δέσμιος, occurring five times across the letter (1:1, 9, 10, 13, 23) — one in chains for the gospel’s sake. Theologically safe; the risk is consistency. Render ബന്ധിതൻ throughout, reserving തടവുകാരൻ only if a more everyday register is needed, and always retain the ‘for the gospel’s sake’ framing rather than a generic legal-prisoner sense.

Spiritual Child

Approved rendering: മകൻ
Transliteration: makan
Doctrine: Spiritual Parenthood in Ministry
Rejected alternatives: കുട്ടി
Original: τέκνον
Category: Spiritual Parenthood

τέκνον at 1:10: Paul’s spiritual-paternal claim over Onesimus, converted through Paul’s ministry during imprisonment. Must be kept distinct from the TM term ‘adoption’ (ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം, God’s own adoptive act); this is Paul’s own instrumental, ministerial claim over a convert, a related but distinct category. മകൻ preferred over generic കുട്ടി to convey filial standing.

Beget Spiritually

Approved rendering: ജനിപ്പിച്ചു
Transliteration: janippichu
Doctrine: Spiritual Parenthood in Ministry
Original: ἐγέννησα
Category: Spiritual Parenthood

ἐγέννησα at 1:10, describing Paul’s instrumental role in Onesimus’s conversion. Must not be confused with the doctrinal category of regeneration by the Holy Spirit itself; this verb names Paul’s instrumental role only.

Useless

Approved rendering: പ്രയോജനമില്ലാത്തവൻ
Transliteration: prayojanamillathavan
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: ἄχρηστος
Category: Slavery and Social Ethics

ἄχρηστος at 1:11, describing Onesimus’s past — a deliberate wordplay echoing and inverting his own name’s meaning (‘useful’). The wordplay is untranslatable in Malayalam script; require a translator footnote, paired with ‘useful’ below.

Useful

Approved rendering: പ്രയോജനമുള്ളവൻ
Transliteration: prayojanamullavan
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: εὔχρηστος
Category: Slavery and Social Ethics

εὔχρηστος at 1:11, describing Onesimus’s transformation in Christ, reversing 1:11a. Same wordplay-preservation note as ‘useless’; flag both terms together for a single translator footnote.

Refresh

Approved rendering: ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുക
Transliteration: aashwasippikkuka
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: ആനന്ദിപ്പിക്കുക
Original: ἀναπαύω
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

ἀναπαύω at 1:7 (perfect passive, of the saints’ hearts) and 1:20 (imperative, of Paul’s own heart), bracketing the letter’s central appeal. Must be rendered identically at both occurrences to preserve the inclusio, alongside the ‘inward_affection’ consistency requirement above.

Approved rendering: സമ്മതം
Transliteration: sammatham
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: അഭിപ്രായം
Original: γνώμη
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

γνώμη at 1:14: Paul insists he will not act without Philemon’s free consent. Must not be rendered as mere ‘opinion’ (അഭിപ്രായം), which would understate the weight of consent central to Paul’s non-coercive strategy.

Compulsion

Approved rendering: നിർബന്ധം
Transliteration: nirbandham
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: ബാധ്യത
Original: ἀνάγκη
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

ἀνάγκη at 1:14: explicitly what Paul does NOT want to be the basis of Philemon’s action. Use the strongest available Malayalam term (not a weak paraphrase like ‘obligation,’ ബാധ്യത) so the contrast with ‘voluntary’ below is unmistakable.

Eternal Or Forever

Approved rendering: എന്നേക്കും
Transliteration: ennekkum
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: നിത്യമായി
Original: αἰώνιος
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

αἰώνιος at 1:15, applied uniquely to a restored human relationship (‘have him back forever’), contrasted with the temporary separation just described. Not present as a standalone entry in the baseline Romans translation memory. Use എന്നേക്കും here for naturalness in this relational register, reserving the weightier നിത്യമായി for eternal-life contexts elsewhere in the curriculum.

In The Flesh

Approved rendering: ജഡത്തിൽ
Transliteration: jadathil
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christian Brotherhood

ἐν σαρκί at 1:16: the ordinary human/social sphere, contrasted with ἐν κυρίῳ — NOT the sin-nature sense σάρξ carries in Romans 7-8. A curriculum-wide translator note distinguishing these two senses of σάρξ is required so learners moving between Romans and Philemon do not import the wrong framework.

Partner

Approved rendering: പങ്കാളി
Transliteration: pankali
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: κοινωνός
Category: Christian Brotherhood

κοινωνός at 1:17: the personal, relational noun cognate of κοινωνία/കൂട്ടായ്മ, here applied to a specific interpersonal request — Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus exactly as he would receive Paul himself, a remarkable social leveling. Keep distinct from the abstract/corporate ‘fellowship’ entry.

Wrongdoing

Approved rendering: അന്യായം ചെയ്യുക
Transliteration: anyayam cheyyuka
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀδικέω
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

ἀδικέω at 1:18: Paul acknowledges Onesimus may have wronged Philemon. Must convey genuine wrongdoing, not minimized, since the forgiveness that follows is meaningful only because a real debt/wrong is in view.

Owe Indebted

Approved rendering: കടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു
Transliteration: kadappettirikkunnu
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ὀφείλω
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

ὀφείλω at 1:18-19; commercial-debt language deliberately paralleling forgiveness-as-debt-cancellation imagery elsewhere in Scripture. Do not over-theologize this plain commercial statement in the verse-level rendering itself; supply the typological resonance via a separate teaching note.

Owe Besides

Approved rendering: കൂടുതൽ കടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു
Transliteration: koodutal kadappettirikkunnu
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: προσοφείλω
Category: Intercession and Appeal

προσοφείλω at 1:19: Paul notes Philemon himself owes Paul an even greater debt, reversing the direction of obligation. This rhetorical reversal must be clearly recoverable in Malayalam word order/emphasis, or the force of the appeal is lost.

Name Wordplay Benefit

Approved rendering: പ്രയോജനം ലഭിക്കട്ടെ
Transliteration: prayojanam labhikkatte
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: ὀναίμην (from ὀνίνημι)
Category: Slavery and Social Ethics

ὀναίμην at 1:20 (‘may I have profit/benefit of you’), a second deliberate wordplay sharing its root with Ὀνήσιμος’s name (1:10-11). Untranslatable directly in Malayalam script; requires a translator footnote linking back to 1:10-11, or the connection is invisible to the Malayalam reader.

Obedience Standalone

Approved rendering: അനുസരണം
Transliteration: anusaranam
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ὑπακοή
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

ὑπακοή at 1:21, standing alone — Philemon’s general character of responsiveness to Paul’s apostolic appeal. Must NOT be silently expanded into the fixed TM compound obedience_of_faith (വിശ്വാസത്തിന്‍റെ അനുസരണം), which has a narrower, specific doctrinal referent in Romans 1:5/16:26. Must be read together with ‘voluntary’ (1:14): Paul trusts Philemon to obey freely, not that Philemon is obligated to comply.

Granted As Favor

Approved rendering: കൃപയാൽ നൽകപ്പെടും
Transliteration: krupayaal nalkappedum
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: വിടുതൽ ലഭിക്കും

χαρισθήσομαι at 1:22, future passive of χαρίζομαι, sharing its root directly with χάρις/കൃപ. Paul describes his own hoped-for release using grace-vocabulary. Do NOT flatten to a plain ‘I will be released’ (വിടുതൽ ലഭിക്കും), which severs this deliberate link; a clarifying teaching note distinguishing ‘grace as saving gift’ from ‘grace-vocabulary used analogically of Paul’s own circumstance’ is required. Verify against the published Satyavedapustakam rendering of Philemon 1:22 before finalizing.

Hope

Approved rendering: പ്രത്യാശ
Transliteration: prathyasha
Doctrine: Hope
Rejected alternatives: ശുഭാപ്തിവിശ്വാസം
Original: ἐλπίζω / ἐλπίς
Category: Faith

ἐλπίζω/ἐλπίς at 1:22: Paul’s hope of release, tied explicitly to the church’s prayers. Not present in the baseline Romans translation memory despite its major role elsewhere in Paul (Romans 5, 8, 15); proposed for cross-curriculum addition. Must convey confident, God-grounded expectation, not fatalistic wishing or mere secular optimism (ശുഭാപ്തിവിശ്വാസം).

Human Spirit

Approved rendering: ആത്മാവ്
Transliteration: aathmavu
Doctrine: Grace
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God

πνεῦμα at 1:25, the addressees’ own human spirit in the closing benediction — NOT the Holy Spirit. A translator note distinguishing this from the TM term holy_spirit (പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്, Critical risk) is required so Malayalam readers do not conflate a benediction over ‘your [human] spirit’ with an invocation of the Holy Spirit himself.

Low Risk Terms

Fellowship

Approved rendering: കൂട്ടായ്മ
Transliteration: koottayma
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: സൗഹൃദം
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. In Philemon 1:6, the abstract/corporate sharing that Philemon’s faith produces. Distinct from the personal, relational noun κοινωνός; see NEW term ‘partner’ below.

Peace

Approved rendering: സമാധാനം
Transliteration: samadhanam
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Part of the standard Pauline greeting formula (Philemon 1:3).

Exhort

Approved rendering: പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക
Transliteration: prothsahippikkuka
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Context-sensitive: അപേക്ഷിക്കുക (entreaty) for beseeching; പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക (encourage) for building up. In Philemon 1:9-10, the ENTREATY branch (അപേക്ഷിക്കുക) is the specific sense required, not the encouragement branch, since the humble, non-coercive appeal is the letter’s central rhetorical move.

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: കൃതജ്ഞത
Transliteration: kruthajnatha
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστῶ
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Philemon 1:4 uses the verb form εὐχαριστῶ; render as നന്ദി പറയുന്നു or കൃതജ്ഞത അറിയിക്കുന്നു.

Fellow Worker

Approved rendering: സഹപ്രവർത്തകൻ
Transliteration: sahapravarthakan
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: συνεργός
Category: Church

Applied to Philemon (1:1) and later to Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke (1:24).

Fellow Soldier

Approved rendering: സഹഭടൻ
Transliteration: sahabhatan
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: συστρατιώτης
Category: Church

Applied to Archippus (1:2); a military metaphor for shared struggle in gospel service.

Prayer

Approved rendering: പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന
Transliteration: prarthana
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: προσευχή
Category: Faith

Occurs at 1:4 (thanksgiving) and 1:22 (hoped-for release).

Fellow Prisoner

Approved rendering: സഹതടവുകാരൻ
Transliteration: sahathadavukaran
Doctrine: Suffering for the Gospel / Apostolic Bonds
Original: συναιχμάλωτος
Category: Apostleship

συναιχμάλωτος, applied to Epaphras (1:23); more vivid than δέσμιος, properly denoting a prisoner taken in military conquest. A translator note on this ‘captive-of-war’ background sense is recommended if space allows.

Hospitality

Approved rendering: സൽക്കാരമുറി
Transliteration: salkkaramuri
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: ξενία
Category: Christian Fellowship

ξενία at 1:22: Paul asks Philemon to prepare a guest room, expecting release from prison. Kerala’s strong cultural and Christian tradition of hospitality (അതിഥിസൽക്കാരം) gives this term positive, low-ambiguity resonance.
