Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Colossians (English → Malayalam)
Purpose
This glossary compiles every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all four chapters of Colossians, into a single per-term reference table for Phase 2 translation memory construction. Terms already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked REUSE and carry the exact baseline rendering, unchanged. Terms new to the Colossians curriculum are marked NEW and carry a proposed rendering and full risk rationale, ready for addition to translation memory pending theologian sign-off on Critical/High items.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier convention exactly:
- Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk; human theologian review required.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding; automated review sufficient.

Part B — New Terms Proposed for Translation Memory (Colossians-Specific)
| English Term | Greek | Transliteration | Malayalam (proposed) | Category | Risk | Doctrine Link | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| image (of God) | εἰκών | eikōn | പ്രതിരൂപം | Christology | Critical | Supremacy/Fullness of Deity | ബിംബം (temple idol-image — forbidden), പ്രതിമ (statue — rejected) | Colossians’ equivalent of the baseline’s അവതാരം risk: a fluent, corpus-common word must be avoided in favor of a theologically precise one. |
| firstborn (of creation / from the dead) | πρωτότοκος | prōtotokos | ആദ്യജാതന് | Christology | High | Supremacy of Christ | — | Requires mandatory translator note ruling out a “first-created-being” reading; rank/inheritance sense, not origin. |
| creation | κτίσις | ktisis | സൃഷ്ടി | Creation | Medium | Supremacy over Creation | — | Shared, comparatively neutral term across Malayalam’s religious registers; contextual care re: one-time vs. cyclical creation. |
| dominion / lordship (created power) | κυριότης | kyriotēs | കര്തൃത്വങ്ങള് | Cosmology/Powers | Medium | Supremacy over Creation | — | Must not be confused with κύριος/കര്ത്താവ് itself (Christ). |
| ruler/principality (created power, ambiguous with “beginning”) | ἀρχή (power sense) | archē | വാഴ്ചകള് | Cosmology/Powers | Medium | Supremacy over Creation / False Teaching | — | CONTEXT-FLAGGED against ആരംഭം (below); never render both senses identically. |
| beginning/source (of the church) | ἀρχή (origin sense) | archē | ആരംഭം | Christology/Church | Medium | Christ as Head of the Church | — | See above; must not read as Christ being one more created ἀρχή. |
| authority/power | ἐξουσία | exousia | അധികാരം / അധികാരങ്ങള് | Cosmology/Powers | Medium | Supremacy over Creation / False Teaching | — | Track consistently across 1:13, 1:16, 2:10, 2:15. |
| holds together / sustains | συνίστημι | synistēmi | ഒന്നിച്ചു നിലനിര്ത്തുന്നു | Christology | Medium | Sufficiency of Christ | — | Must preserve ongoing, active sustaining sense, not a one-time past act. |
| head (of the body) | κεφαλή | kephalē | ശിരസ്സ് | Ecclesiology | Medium | Christ as Head of the Church | തല (too casual/anatomical alone) | Must retain both authority AND life-source senses. |
| fullness | πλήρωμα | plērōma | പൂര്ണ്ണത | Christology | High | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | — | Must preserve totalizing “ALL the fullness,” never softened to partial fullness distributed among powers. |
| deity / Godhead | θεότης | theotēs | ദൈവത്വം | Christology | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | — | Must convey Christ’s possession of God’s COMPLETE nature, not a shared divine spark/emanation. Theologian review mandatory. |
| bodily | σωματικῶς | sōmatikōs | ശാരീരികമായി | Christology | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | — | Must not be softened to “spiritually” or “fully” in a way that loses the physical claim. |
| dwell (permanently) | κατοικέω | katoikeō | വസിക്കുന്നു | Christology | High | Fullness of Deity / Incarnation | — | Contrast with temporary/episodic avatar-style descent; connects to baseline’s മാംസധാരണം warning. |

Recommend Critical escalation if paired with atonement/blood-of-the-cross language. |
| make peace | εἰρηνοποιέω | eirēnopoieō | സമാധാനം ഉണ്ടാക്കി | Salvation | Medium | Reconciliation through the Cross | — | Built on baseline സമാധാനം; keep tightly bound to “blood of his cross.” |

| elemental spirits / basic principles of the world | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | stoicheia tou kosmou | ലോകത്തിന്റെ പ്രാഥമികതത്വങ്ങള് | Cosmology | High | False Teaching and Syncretism | literal “cosmic elements” rendering (rejected — pañcabhūta collision risk) | Prefer “elementary/basic teachings” sense over literal elemental-cosmology sense. |
| philosophy | φιλοσοφία | philosophia | തത്വശാസ്ത്രം | General | Low | False Teaching and Syncretism | — | Negative framing supplied by context, not the word itself. |
| circumcision (lit. and metaphorical) | περιτομή | peritomē | പരിച്ഛേദന | Covenant | Low | Union with Christ | — | Established OT/NT covenant term. |
| buried/raised with [Christ] | συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω | synthaptō / synegeirō | ഒരുമിച്ചു കുഴിച്ചിടപ്പെടുകയും ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയും | Soteriology | Critical | Union with Christ | any phrasing invoking പുനര്ജന്മം (forbidden absolutely) | Must build on baseline’s mandatory ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ് root even in this positional/spiritual sense. |
| baptism | βάπτισμα | baptisma | സ്നാനം | Sacrament | Low | Union with Christ | — | Long-established, unambiguous term. |

| self-made religion | ἐθελοθρησκία | ethelothrēskia | സ്വയംകൃതഭക്തി | False Teaching | High | False Teaching and Syncretism | — | Deliberate cautionary use of ഭക്തി; requires theologian framing so readers do not conclude bhakti devotion to Christ itself is condemned. |
| severity to the body / asceticism | ἀφειδία σώματος | apheidia sōmatos | ശരീരത്തെ പീഡിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കാഠിന്യം | False Teaching | High | False Teaching and Syncretism | — | Resembles Kerala’s tapas/tapasya tradition; must read as rejection, not qualified endorsement. |
| old self | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος | palaios anthrōpos | പഴയ മനുഷ്യന് | Anthropology | High | Putting Off the Old Self | — | Completed positional reality in union with Christ’s death, not a gradual self-effort project. |
| new self | νέος / καινὸς ἄνθρωπος | neos/kainos anthrōpos | പുതിയ മനുഷ്യന് | Anthropology | High | Putting On the New Self | — | Grounded in union with Christ’s resurrection; not a generic self-realization narrative. |
| put off (clothing metaphor) | ἀποτίθημι | apotithēmi | ഊരിക്കളയുക | Anthropology | High | Putting Off the Old Self | — | Pair consistently with ധരിക്കുക below. |
| put on (clothing metaphor) | ἐνδύω | endyō | ധരിക്കുക | Anthropology | High | Putting On the New Self | — | Genuine new identity, not mere external behavior change. |
| idolatry | εἰδωλολατρία | eidōlolatria | വിഗ്രഹാരാധന | Sin | Critical | Old Self / False Teaching | — | Doctrinally necessary term (also the ordinary Malayalam word for Hindu idol-worship); requires pastoral framing as a universal sin category (here: covetousness), not a targeted community description. |
| slave (household code) | δοῦλος | doulos | ദാസൻ | Household Codes | Medium | Household Codes | — | Distinct from spiritual “servant of Christ” sense; literal social status in this passage. |
| master (human, household code) | κύριος (human sense) | kyrios | യജമാനന് | Household Codes | Critical | Household Codes | കര്ത്താവ് (forbidden for this sense — reserved exclusively for the divine Lord) | Strict disambiguation required within 3:22-4:1’s deliberate wordplay between human masters and “the Lord Christ.” |
| submit | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | കീഴ്പെടുക | Household Codes | High | Household Codes | — | Teach within the passage’s mutual, Christ-centered frame (3:18-4:1 as a unit), not as free-standing hierarchy warrant. |
| love (general NT term) | ἀγάπη | agapē | സ്നേഹം | Ethics | Medium | Union with Christ / New Self | — | Ensure covenantal/self-giving sense is not flattened to generic affection, esp. 3:14. |
| hope | ἐλπίς | elpis | പ്രത്യാശ | Soteriology | Medium | Supremacy/Reconciliation | ആശ (too weak — generic wish/desire) | Confident, gospel-grounded expectation. |
| inheritance | κληρονομία | klēronomia | അവകാശം | Soteriology | Medium | Reconciliation / Household Codes | — | Cross-reference baseline’s ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം inheritance-rights framework. |
| deliver/rescue | ῥύομαι | rhyomai | വിടുവിക്കുക | Soteriology | Medium | Reconciliation | — | Distinct from, and not a substitute for, baseline’s രക്ഷ. |

| suffering/affliction of Christ (Paul’s) | πάθημα / θλίψις τοῦ Χριστοῦ | pathēma/thlipsis tou Christou | ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ കഷ്ടങ്ങളില് കുറവായത് | Ecclesiology | Critical | Sufficiency of Christ | — | Mandatory note: refers to the church’s ongoing suffering in ministry, NOT a deficiency in the finished atonement. Theologian review without exception. |
| triumph over (public display of defeat) | θριαμβεύω | thriambeuō | വിജയോത്സവത്തില് പരസ്യമായി പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കുക | Christology | Medium | Supremacy over Creation | — | Descriptive phrase required; preserve public, decisive-defeat image. |
| disarm | ἀπεκδύομαι | apekdyomai | നിരായുധരാക്കി | Christology | Medium | Supremacy over Creation | — | Connects to the ἀρχή/ἐξουσία powers theme throughout the letter. |
Part C — Terms Reviewed With No New Rendering Required
The following chapter sections were reviewed in full per the Step 1 mandate and contain either (a) only Low-risk, transparent vocabulary already covered by ordinary Malayalam usage, or (b) exclusively proper names following standard Malayalam Bible transliteration convention, requiring no new glossary entries beyond those listed above:
- Colossians 1:1-2 (salutation formula), 4:7-18 (closing greetings and named individuals — Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus): epistolary convention and proper names only; reuse standard Malayalam Bible transliteration forms; no doctrinal risk.
- Colossians 4:5, 4:8-9 (practical instructions about outsiders and messengers): general ethical vocabulary already covered by established Malayalam Christian usage (wisdom-in-conduct, informing/encouraging); no new theological terms.

Critical Risk Terms
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ്
Transliteration: uyirthezhunnelppu
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: പുനര്ജന്മം
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἐγείρω (root)
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:18, 2:12, 3:1. NEVER പുനര്ജന്മം, including when the SAME root is applied to the believer’s own positional ‘raised with Christ’ status (2:12; 3:1) — the reincarnation-adjacent misreading risk is arguably higher there than in a purely Christological statement.
Lord
Approved rendering: കര്ത്താവ്
Transliteration: karthavu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος (divine sense)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:3, 1:10, 2:6, 3:16-4:1 (divine occurrences only). CRITICAL COLOSSIANS-SPECIFIC RULE: in 3:22-4:1, κύριος also names a HUMAN master; കര്ത്താവ് is FORBIDDEN for that human sense — use യജമാനന് (see master_human below). Reserve കര്ത്താവ് exclusively for the divine Lord even within the same short paragraph.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവപുത്രന്
Transliteration: daivaputhran
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ദേവപുത്രന്
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ / υἱός (τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies Colossians 1:13 (‘the Son of his love’/his beloved Son) and the whole 1:15-20 hymn. The idiom ‘Son of his love’ must be unpacked as ‘beloved Son,’ never literalized in a way that sounds adoptive or emotionally derivative rather than eternal/unique sonship.
Messiah
Approved rendering: ക്രിസ്തു
Transliteration: kristu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout Colossians.
Jesus
Approved rendering: യേശു
Transliteration: yeshu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:1, 1:3, 1:4, 3:17, etc.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവ്
Transliteration: parishudhathmavu
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ബ്രഹ്മം, പരമാത്മാവ്
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:8.
Father
Approved rendering: പിതാവ്
Transliteration: pithavu
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:2, 1:3, 1:12, 3:17.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: മാംസധാരണം
Transliteration: mamsadharanam
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: അവതാരം
Original: — (doctrine cross-reference; cf. σῶμα τῆς σαρκός, σωματικῶς)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Cross-referenced at Colossians 1:22 (‘body of his flesh’) and 2:9 (‘dwells bodily’); Colossians’ κατοικέω/σωματικῶς vocabulary (see dwell_permanently, bodily below) reinforces this doctrine with additional precision beyond Romans. NEVER അവതാരം.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: പ്രതിരൂപം
Transliteration: pratirupam
Doctrine: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ബിംബം, പ്രതിമ
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Colossians 1:15; echoed at 3:10 (‘renewed after the image of its creator’) and MUST reuse this exact rendering there. NEVER ബിംബം (consecrated Hindu temple idol-image, as in ബിംബപ്രതിഷ്ഠ) or പ്രതിമ (carved/cast statue) — both present Christ as a crafted object rather than God’s own self-revelation. This is Colossians’ equivalent of the baseline incarnation/അവതാരം risk.
Deity Godhead
Approved rendering: ദൈവത്വം
Transliteration: daivathvam
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:9 (θεότης). The letter’s single most doctrinally load-bearing new term. Must convey Christ’s possession of the COMPLETE nature of God, never a shared divine spark, portion, or emanation — guards against both the Colossian heresy’s distributed-fullness view AND any pantheistic Brahman-Atman reading. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
Bodily
Approved rendering: ശാരീരികമായി
Transliteration: shareerikamayi
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:9 (σωματικῶς). Must not be softened to ‘spiritually’ or ‘fully,’ which would erase the specifically physical claim and open a docetic misreading. Treat together with deity_godhead and dwell_permanently as a single fused Critical-risk unit; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
Union With Christ Death Resurrection
Approved rendering: ഒരുമിച്ചു കുഴിച്ചിടപ്പെടുകയും ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയും
Transliteration: orumichu kuzhichidappedukayum uyirthezhunnelppikkappedukayum
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Rejected alternatives: any phrasing invoking പുനര്ജന്മം
Original: συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:12 (συνθάπτω/συνεγείρω); reprised conceptually at 3:1. Must build without exception on the baseline’s mandatory ഉയിര്ത്തെഴുന്നേല്പ്പ് root, tied grammatically to ‘with Christ’ (ക്രിസ്തുവിനോടുകൂടെ) in the same clause. NEVER പുനര്ജന്മം — the misreading risk is elevated here because the BELIEVER’s own ‘rebirth’-adjacent status, not only Christ’s, is being described.
Idolatry
Approved rendering: വിഗ്രഹാരാധന
Transliteration: vigrahaaradhana
Doctrine: Idolatry Warning (Covetousness as Idolatry)
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sin
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:5 (‘covetousness, which is idolatry’). Same standard Malayalam word used descriptively (not pejoratively) for Hindu temple deity-worship. Doctrinally necessary and correct here, but requires MANDATORY pastoral framing: Paul names covetousness itself as a universal sin category applicable to every reader, not a targeted description of a specific living religious community’s practice. Route to human theologian review for framing notes.
Master Human
Approved rendering: യജമാനന്
Transliteration: yajamanan
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: കര്ത്താവ് (forbidden for the human sense)
Original: κύριος (human sense)
Category: Household Codes
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:22-4:1 (κύριος, human sense). STRICT DISAMBIGUATION REQUIRED: κύριος names a human slaveholder here, distinct from the divine Lord named by the SAME Greek word elsewhere in the same paragraph (3:24’s ‘the Lord Christ’; 4:1’s ‘Master in heaven’). കര്ത്താവ് is FORBIDDEN for this human sense. A translator note explaining Paul’s deliberate wordplay is required.
Afflictions Of Christ
Approved rendering: ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ കഷ്ടങ്ങളില് കുറവായത്
Transliteration: kristuvinte kashtangalil kuravayathu
Doctrine: Sufficiency of Christ
Original: πάθημα / θλίψις τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:24 (πάθημα/θλίψις τοῦ Χριστοῦ). The single most theologically hazardous phrase in the letter: a literal, unglossed rendering risks appearing to contradict Colossians’ own doctrine of Christ’s sufficiency (1:19-20; 2:9-10). MANDATORY translator note: refers to the church’s/apostle’s ongoing suffering in gospel ministry in union with Christ, NOT a deficiency in the finished atoning work. Human theologian review required without exception.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: കൃപ
Transliteration: krupa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: പുണ്യം
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:2, 1:6, 3:16, 4:6, 4:18. Keep grace’s source explicitly Christ’s finished work, not bhakti-style devotee merit — a heightened concern here given Colossians 2:23’s warning against self-devised religious effort (see self_made_religion below).
Saints
Approved rendering: വിശുദ്ധര്
Transliteration: vishudhar
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26. Same inverted risk as Romans 1:7: Kerala’s Catholic/Orthodox canonization tradition (e.g. St. Alphonsa) may narrow this to a formally recognized elite; must be explicitly widened to every believer at Colossae.
Election
Approved rendering: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്
Transliteration: daivathinte thiranjeduppu
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: വിധി, തലയെഴുത്ത്
Original: ἐκλογή / ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 3:12 (‘God’s chosen ones’). Never വിധി (fate) or fatalistic idiom.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: ആദ്യജാതന്
Transliteration: adyajathan
Doctrine: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:15 (‘firstborn of all creation’) and 1:18 (‘firstborn from the dead’). Literal Malayalam rendering preserves birth-order surface form but risks a ‘first-created-being’ misreading without a mandatory clarifying note that verse 16 rules this out (rank/inheritance sense, not origin) — an Arian-adjacent misreading that must be pre-empted at every occurrence.
Domain Of Darkness
Approved rendering: ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ അധികാരം
Transliteration: irutinte adhikaram
Doctrine: Deliverance from the Domain of Darkness
Original: ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:13. First occurrence of the letter’s recurring powers theme (continues at 1:16, 2:10, 2:15); must convey a personal, hostile spiritual dominion, not impersonal fate or generic evil.
Fullness
Approved rendering: പൂര്ണ്ണത
Transliteration: poornatha
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:19, 2:9-10 (πλήρωμα). Must preserve the totalizing ‘ALL the fullness’ (πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα) claim — render as സകല പൂര്ണ്ണതയും where the source text has this totalizing modifier; never softened to ‘a fullness’ distributed among the powers of 1:16 or the elemental spirits of ch.2.
Dwell Permanently
Approved rendering: വസിക്കുന്നു
Transliteration: vasikkunnu
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: κατοικέω
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:19, 2:9 (κατοικέω). Must use a verb clearly conveying PERMANENT indwelling, not temporary visitation or episodic appearance — directly connects to the baseline incarnation warning against അവതാരം (a deity’s temporary/repeatable descent).
Reconciliation
Approved rendering: അനുരഞ്ജിപ്പിക്കുക
Transliteration: anuranjippikkuka
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: മുഖേനയുള്ള ഒത്തുതീര്പ്പ്
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:20-22 (ἀποκαταλλάσσω). The ordinary secular Malayalam sense of അനുരഞ്ജനം (a negotiated settlement between disputing equals, e.g. political/legal mediation) risks implying mutual compromise. Must always keep God/Christ as sole grammatical and theological agent, and must appear tied to ‘through the blood of his cross’ in the same clause or an adjacent mandatory note.
Redemption
Approved rendering: വീണ്ടെടുപ്പ്
Transliteration: veendeduppu
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:14 (ἀπολύτρωσις). Must convey a costly, decisive rescue accomplished by Christ, not a generic ‘release.‘
Mystery
Approved rendering: മര്മ്മം
Transliteration: marmam
Doctrine: Mystery of Christ Revealed
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Revelation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3 (μυστήριον). Must be anchored as a PUBLICLY PROCLAIMED, now-revealed truth (Christ himself), the opposite of privileged secret gnosis reserved for an inner circle — centrally important against the false teachers’ apparent claim to superior esoteric knowledge.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: ജ്ഞാനം
Transliteration: jnanam
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: σοφία
Category: Epistemology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 2:23, 3:16, 4:5 (σοφία). Established Malayalam Bible wisdom term, but also the central term of Vedantic jñāna-mārga (‘path of knowledge’ toward liberation). Every occurrence must keep wisdom’s source explicitly ‘in Christ,’ never a self-attained gnosis or contemplative insight reached by the seeker’s own effort.
Knowledge
Approved rendering: പരിജ്ഞാനം
Transliteration: parijnanam
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: γνῶσις / ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Epistemology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:9-10 (ἐπίγνωσις, full knowledge) and 2:3 (γνῶσις). Likely does double duty as Paul’s positive term for true knowledge of Christ AND a direct rebuttal of the false teachers’ own claimed vocabulary — an early instance of what later became the fully developed Gnostic movement’s core claim. Flag as intentionally polemical wherever it recurs.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: ലോകത്തിന്റെ പ്രാഥമികതത്വങ്ങള്
Transliteration: lokathinte prathamikathathvangal
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: literal cosmic-elements rendering
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:8, 2:20 (στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου). A literal ‘elemental’ rendering risks resonance with the Hindu pañcabhūta (five-element) cosmology and astrological elemental forces; the recommended rendering favors the ‘elementary/basic teachings’ sense to avoid inadvertently affirming a pañcabhūta-style cosmology as the object of Paul’s warning.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: ദൂതന്മാരുടെ ആരാധന
Transliteration: doothanmarude aradhana
Doctrine: Rejection of Worship Directed to Angels/Intermediaries
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:18. Names precisely the intermediary-being veneration the letter opposes; must be clearly distinguished from legitimate reverence for angels as God’s messengers, and from Kerala Catholic/Orthodox INTERCESSORY requests to saints (a distinct denominational-emphasis matter, not this doctrine’s target). The doctrinal point — worship belongs to Christ alone — must be explicit.
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: സ്വയംകൃതഭക്തി
Transliteration: swayamkritha bhakthi
Doctrine: Warning against Ascetic Self-Mortification
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:23 (ἐθελοθρησκία). A DELIBERATE, cautionary use of ഭക്തി in a NEGATIVE sense — the opposite of the baseline’s usual avoidance of ഭക്തി for genuine saving faith. Requires mandatory theologian framing so readers do not conclude Paul condemns bhakti devotion to Christ himself, rather than self-devised, Christ-independent religious invention.
Asceticism
Approved rendering: ശരീരത്തെ പീഡിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കാഠിന്യം
Transliteration: shareerathe peedippikkunna kathinyam
Doctrine: Warning against Ascetic Self-Mortification
Rejected alternatives: തപസ്സ്, തപശ്ചര്യ
Original: ἀφειδία σώματος
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:23 (ἀφειδία σώματος). Closely resembles Kerala’s Hindu/Jain tapas (tapasya) tradition of bodily austerity as a path to spiritual merit; avoided തപസ്സ്/തപശ്ചര്യ precisely because of their positive devotional connotation. Must read as unambiguous REJECTION (‘of no value against the flesh’), never qualified praise.
Old Self
Approved rendering: പഴയ മനുഷ്യന്
Transliteration: paya manushyan
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Anthropology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:9 (παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος). Must be read as a completed, POSITIONAL reality already put off in union with Christ’s death (echoing 2:11-12), not merely an ongoing moral-improvement project — risk of collision with generic self-improvement or Vedantic self-transformation frameworks if presented as gradual self-effort alone.
New Self
Approved rendering: പുതിയ മനുഷ്യന്
Transliteration: puthiya manushyan
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: νέος / καινὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Anthropology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:10 (νέος/καινὸς ἄνθρωπος). Grounded in union with Christ’s resurrection, not a generic spiritual self-realization narrative; the ‘renewed… after the image of its creator’ clause must reuse image_of_god’s exact rendering (പ്രതിരൂപം) from 1:15.
Put Off
Approved rendering: ഊരിക്കളയുക
Transliteration: oorikkalayuka
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀποτίθημι
Category: Anthropology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:8-9 (ἀποτίθημι). Core clothing metaphor; must be paired consistently with put_on (ധരിക്കുക).
Put On
Approved rendering: ധരിക്കുക
Transliteration: dharikkuka
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἐνδύω
Category: Anthropology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:10, 3:12 (ἐνδύω). Risk lies in translating this as a merely external behavioral change rather than a genuine new identity given in union with Christ.
Submit
Approved rendering: കീഴ്പെടുക
Transliteration: keezhpeduka
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household Codes
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:18 (ὑποτάσσω). The doctrinal risk is cultural-application rather than lexical: must be taught within the passage’s own mutual, Christ-centered household ethic (3:18-4:1 as a whole unit culminating in ‘as to the Lord’), not as a free-standing warrant for unqualified hierarchy.
Medium Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: സുവിശേഷം
Transliteration: suvisesham
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:5, 1:23. Established across all Malayalam Christian traditions; risk is AI-generated paraphrase drift, not competing vocabulary.

Transliteration: vishwasam
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ഭക്തി
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12. Personal trust in Christ, distinct from generalized devotional reverence (ഭക്തി).

Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവരാജ്യം
Transliteration: daivarajyam
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:13 (‘the kingdom of his beloved Son’) and 4:11; reinforces Christ’s co-equal divine reign as the Son’s own kingdom.
Sin
Approved rendering: പാപം
Transliteration: papam
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:14 (compound with forgiveness_of_sins) and 2:13.
Glory
Approved rendering: മഹത്വം
Transliteration: mahatvam
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:11, 1:27, 3:4.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി
Transliteration: daivathinte shakthi
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Original: δύναμις (θεοῦ)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:11, 1:29, 2:12.
Creation
Approved rendering: സൃഷ്ടി
Transliteration: srishti
Doctrine: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις
Category: Creation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:15-16, 1:23. Shared vocabulary across Malayalam’s religious registers, including Hindu srishti-sthiti-samhara cyclical cosmology; must be anchored as one-time, purposive creation by a personal Creator through Christ, not a cyclical cosmic phase.
Dominion Created Power
Approved rendering: കര്തൃത്വങ്ങള്
Transliteration: karthruthvangal
Doctrine: Christ’s Triumph over Cosmic Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:16 (κυριότης). Built on the same root as കര്ത്താവ് (Lord); must never be confused with κύριος/Christ himself. A translator note distinguishing ‘a dominion’ (created rank) from ‘the Lord’ is advisable at first occurrence.
Rulers Principalities
Approved rendering: വാഴ്ചകള്
Transliteration: vazhchakal
Doctrine: Christ’s Triumph over Cosmic Powers
Original: ἀρχή (power sense)
Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 (ἀρχή, power sense). CONTEXT-FLAGGED against ആരംഭം (the ‘beginning/source’ sense of the SAME Greek word applied to Christ himself at 1:18). Never render both senses identically, or Christ would appear classed among the created powers he is shown to be supreme over.
Beginning Source
Approved rendering: ആരംഭം
Transliteration: arambham
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: ἀρχή (origin sense)
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:18 (ἀρχή, origin sense — Christ as the church’s originating source). CONTEXT-FLAGGED against വാഴ്ചകള് (the ‘ruling power’ sense of the same word at 1:16, 2:10, 2:15). Never render both senses identically.
Authority Powers
Approved rendering: അധികാരങ്ങള്
Transliteration: adhikarangal
Doctrine: Christ’s Triumph over Cosmic Powers
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:13 (singular, ‘authority of darkness’), 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 (ἐξουσία). Track consistently across all four occurrences so readers recognize a single recurring class of powers, later publicly defeated by Christ at the cross (2:15).
Sustains All Things
Approved rendering: ഒന്നിച്ചു നിലനിര്ത്തുന്നു
Transliteration: onnichu nilanirthunnu
Doctrine: Sufficiency of Christ
Original: συνίστημι
Category: Christology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:17 (συνίστημι). No single Malayalam word captures this; a descriptive verb phrase is required. Must preserve ongoing, active, present-tense sustaining, never a one-time past creative act followed by divine absence (a deism-adjacent misreading). Must also resist drifting toward an impersonal Vedantic ground-of-being register — the agent remains the personal, named divine Son.
Head Of Church
Approved rendering: ശിരസ്സ്
Transliteration: shirassu
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: തല
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:18, 2:19 (κεφαλή). Established formal term, distinct from the casual തല. Must retain BOTH authority AND life-giving-source senses; a rendering conveying only ‘boss/chief’ flattens Paul’s organic body metaphor and risks collapsing into a past-tense ‘founding guru’ reading rather than Christ’s present, sustaining headship.
Body
Approved rendering: ശരീരം
Transliteration: shareeram
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:18, 1:22, 1:24, 2:11, 2:19, 3:15 (σῶμα). Single Malayalam word serves both Christ’s literal physical/crucified body AND the church as his corporate body, matching Paul’s own intentional double-use; context notes should flag which sense is active per occurrence.
Make Peace
Approved rendering: സമാധാനം ഉണ്ടാക്കി
Transliteration: samadhanam undakki
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιέω
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:20 (εἰρηνοποιέω). Built directly on the baseline term സമാധാനം; must be kept tightly bound to ‘through the blood of his cross’ so peace is not read as general goodwill achievable apart from the atoning death.
Cross
Approved rendering: ക്രൂശ്
Transliteration: krൂsh
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:20; conceptually present at 2:14. ക്രൂശ് is the established, historically rooted Malayalam Christian liturgical term, preferred over the modern loanword ക്രോസ്സ് (permitted heritage/colloquial alternative, not preferred). Use consistently across all occurrences.
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: പാപമോചനം
Transliteration: papamochanam
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:14 (ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν). Reuses established baseline sin vocabulary; must not stand in for the baseline’s distinct forensic doctrine of justification (നീതീകരണം).
Deliverance
Approved rendering: വിടുവിക്കുക
Transliteration: viduvikkuka
Doctrine: Deliverance from the Domain of Darkness
Original: ῥύομαι
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:13 (ῥύομαι). Semantically adjacent to but distinct from the baseline’s രക്ഷ (salvation); should not be confused with or substituted for it.
Hope
Approved rendering: പ്രത്യാശ
Transliteration: prathyasha
Doctrine: Hope
Rejected alternatives: ആശ
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 (ἐλπίς). Must convey confident, gospel-grounded future expectation, not the weaker general-purpose ആശ (desire/wish).
Inheritance
Approved rendering: അവകാശം
Transliteration: avakasham
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Salvation
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:12, 3:24 (κληρονομία). Standard Malayalam term; parallels the baseline’s ദത്തുപുത്രത്വം (adoption) inheritance-rights framework and should be cross-referenced with it.
Love
Approved rendering: സ്നേഹം
Transliteration: sneham
Doctrine: New-Self Virtue Ethics
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Ethics
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:4, 1:8, 2:2, 3:14 (ἀγάπη). Standard, warm, low-risk Malayalam Christian term; ensure it is not flattened to generic affection when the context is covenantal/self-giving love, especially 3:14 (‘love, which binds everything together’).
False Humility
Approved rendering: വ്യാജതാഴ്മ
Transliteration: vyaja-thazhma
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη (negative use)
Category: False Teaching
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:18 (negative use of ταπεινοφροσύνη), contrasted with the genuinely positive use of the same Greek word at 3:12 (plain താഴ്മ). Dual-valence term requiring explicit contextual flagging so readers do not conclude humility itself is condemned.
Renewal
Approved rendering: നവീകരണം
Transliteration: naveekaranam
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀνακαίνωσις
Category: Anthropology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:10 (ἀνακαίνωσις). Deliberate echo of εἰκών/κτίζω from 1:15; requires rendering consistency with image_of_god (πρατിരൂപം) used there.
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: ദൈവക്രോധം
Transliteration: daivakrodham
Doctrine: The Wrath of God
Rejected alternatives: വിധി
Original: ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Sin
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:6. Must convey a personal God’s righteous judicial response to sin, not an impersonal law of cosmic consequence (karma).
Slave
Approved rendering: ദാസൻ
Transliteration: dasan
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Household Codes
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:22, 4:1 (δοῦλος). Distinct from the spiritual ‘servant of Christ’ sense; literal social status in this passage.
Obey
Approved rendering: അനുസരിക്കുക
Transliteration: anusarikkuka
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑπακούω
Category: Household Codes
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 3:20, 3:22 (ὑπακούω). Shares its root with the baseline’s ‘obedience of faith’ doctrine term; this everyday household-code obedience is a distinct, this-passage-specific application, not to be confused with saving obedience-flowing-from-faith.
Stewardship
Approved rendering: കാര്യവിചാരണ
Transliteration: karyavicharana
Doctrine: Christ-Centered Ministry and Stewardship
Original: οἰκονομία
Category: Church
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:25 (οἰκονομία). Standard administrative term; should be kept distinct from a merely institutional/bureaucratic sense given Kerala Christianity’s extensive institutional structures (schools, hospitals, church administrative bodies).
Triumph Over Powers
Approved rendering: വിജയോത്സവത്തില് പരസ്യമായി പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കുക
Transliteration: vijayotsavathil parasyamayi pradarshippikkuka
Doctrine: Christ’s Triumph over Cosmic Powers
Original: θριαμβεύω
Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:15 (θριαμβεύω). No single Malayalam word carries the Roman-triumph image; a descriptive phrase is necessary to preserve the public, decisive, humiliating-defeat sense against the powers named in 1:16 and 2:10.
Disarm
Approved rendering: നിരായുധരാക്കി
Transliteration: nirayudharakki
Doctrine: Christ’s Triumph over Cosmic Powers
Original: ἀπεκδύομαι
Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:15 (ἀπεκδύομαι). Standard verb for ‘rendered powerless’; connects to the powers theme running through 1:13, 1:16, 2:10.
Low Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: അപ്പോസ്തലന്
Transliteration: appostalan
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ഗുരു
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:1 (Paul’s self-designation).
Peace
Approved rendering: സമാധാനം
Transliteration: samadhanam
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:2, 1:20, 3:15. Colossians 3:15’s ‘let the peace of Christ rule/be arbiter’ (βραβεύω) carries a lost athletic-umpire nuance; a brief explanatory note is recommended alongside the base term.
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: കൃതജ്ഞത
Transliteration: kruthajnatha
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:3, 1:12, 2:7, 3:15, 3:17, 4:2.

Category: Cosmology/Powers
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 1:16 (θρόνος). Standard word for throne/royal seat; no significant collision.
Philosophy
Approved rendering: തത്വശാസ്ത്രം
Transliteration: thatvashastram
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: φιλοσοφία
Category: Epistemology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:8 (φιλοσοφία) — the only NT use of this word, and negative. Standard secular term; negative framing supplied by context (‘empty deceit’), not by the word itself.
Tradition

Transliteration: paramparyam
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: παράδοσις
Category: Epistemology
NEW for Colossians. Occurs at 2:8 (παράδοσις, ‘tradition of men’). Standard term; context supplies the negative sense.
