Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: 1 John (Full-Book Coverage)
This document provides the complete doctrine matrix for 1 John, chapters 1–5, in the format required for Phase 1 Step 4/5 deliverables. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 24 doctrines, the same names, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing. No doctrine, risk level, or routing decision introduced here contradicts that registry; this document adds per-chapter sequencing, translation-risk framing, and explicit “reviewed, no new content” notations required by the full-book coverage mandate.
The core passage, 1 John 4:7-21, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (God is Love, propitiation, perfect love casting out fear, love for the brethren) but is not the boundary of the analysis. Every chapter of the letter is treated below.
Master Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Key Terms | Primary Passages (1 John) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | God is Light | Critical | light, darkness, god_is_light_statement, walk_conduct | 1:5; 1:7; 2:9-11 | Essence-statement grammar; collision with Bathou fire-element (or) symbolism in the sijou plant | Human theologian |
| 2 | God is Love | Critical | love (noun/verb), god_is_love_statement, propitiation | 4:7-8; 4:16; 4:19 | Highest-stakes doctrinal statement; no Bathou/Brahma Dharma equivalent to divine essence as other-directed love | Human theologian |
| 3 | Fellowship with God | High | fellowship, abide, light, confess_sin | 1:3; 1:6-7; 4:13 | Must be distinguished from mediated/ritual approach to Bathoubwrai via sijou or doudini trance | Human theologian |
| 4 | Fellowship with One Another | Medium | fellowship, brother, beloved_address | 1:3; 1:7; 3:16-18 | Risk of narrowing to clan (afad)/village social bonds rather than cross-clan believing community | Native speaker review |
| 5 | Confession of Sin | High | confess_sin, sin, faithful_trustworthy, liar | 1:8-10; 2:1 | Same verb used for confessing Christ (4:15); senses must not flatten together | Human theologian |
| 6 | Cleansing and Forgiveness of Sin | Critical | cleanse, confess_sin, propitiation, advocate | 1:7; 1:9; 2:12 | Tension with baseline’s ritual-only restriction on साफ; requires moral/judicial cleansing sense | Human theologian |
| 7 | Propitiation / Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice | Critical | propitiation, confess_sin, cleanse | 2:2; 4:10 | बलि register correct but directionality (God-to-sinner, not sinner-to-deity) must be inverted from Bathou/Kherai offering logic | Human theologian |
| 8 | Christ’s Ongoing Advocacy | Critical | advocate, confess_sin | 2:1 | Must not be read as repeatable ritual petition carried by a doudini/ओझा | Human theologian |
| 9 | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | High | love_verb, born_of_god, brother, liar | 3:10-17; 4:7-8; 4:20-21 | Evidence, not cause, of regeneration; risk of merit-generating or clan-bound misreading | Human theologian |
| 10 | New Birth (Born of God) | Critical | born_of_god, seed_of_god, children_of_god | 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1; 5:4; 5:18 | Built on जायनाय, not जोनोम, to avoid rebirth/reincarnation collision; single non-repeatable birth | Human theologian |
| 11 | Children of God / Sonship | High | children_of_god, seed_of_god, born_of_god | 3:1-2; 3:10 | Complements (does not replace) baseline adoption doctrine; बेंसे is metaphor, not literal genealogy | Human theologian |
| 12 | The Incarnation of Christ | Critical | incarnation, flesh, manifested, confess_christ, test_the_spirits | 1:1-2; 4:2-3; 4:9; 4:14 | Confessional test for true/false spirits turns entirely on this doctrine; distinct from doudini possession | Human theologian |
| 13 | Antichrist and False Teaching | High | antichrist, spirit_of_error, liar, confess_christ | 2:18-23; 2:26; 4:3 | Must not be conflated with generic evil spirits from the Bathou/Kherai spirit taxonomy | Human theologian |
| 14 | Testing the Spirits | Critical | test_the_spirits, spirit_generic_tested, spirit_of_truth, spirit_of_error, confess_christ | 4:1-6 | Single highest-priority discernment doctrine; displaces lineage/ritual/trance-authenticity criteria with confession-of-Christ criterion | Human theologian |
| 15 | Assurance of Salvation | High | confidence_assurance, eternal_life, heart_condemns, born_of_god | 2:28; 3:19-21; 4:17-18; 5:13 | Confidence must rest on Christ’s finished work, never accumulated ritual/merit record | Human theologian |
| 16 | Eternal Life | Critical | eternal_life, confidence_assurance, born_of_god | 1:2; 2:25; 3:14-15; 5:11-13; 5:20 | Present, knowable possession now (5:13); never मोक्ष-style liberation; genuine conceptual gap vs. Bathou this-life orientation | Human theologian |
| 17 | Overcoming the World | High | overcome_victory, world_opposed_system, born_of_god, faith | 2:13-14; 4:4; 5:4-5 | Risk of militant/territorial-political overtone given Bodoland’s armed-struggle history | Human theologian |
| 18 | The World and Its Desires | Medium | world_opposed_system, lust_of_flesh, lust_of_eyes, pride_of_life | 2:15-17 | κόσμος’s two senses share one Bodo word (दुनिया); must be sense-flagged at every occurrence | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Obedience to God’s Commandments | Medium | commandment, burdensome, love_verb | 2:3-4; 3:22-24; 5:2-3 | Keep आदेश distinct from बिथान and from Brahma Dharma’s codified conduct-rules | Native speaker review |
| 20 | Christ’s Second Coming | High | parousia_second_coming, confidence_assurance, day_of_judgment | 2:28 | Shares morpheme फिन with the forbidden फिन जोनोम compound; must be taught as a single historical event, not a cycle | Human theologian |
| 21 | Idolatry and Exclusive Devotion to the True God | Critical | idols, true_god, world_opposed_system | 5:20-21 | मूर्ति’s narrow iconic sense must be explicitly extended to cover aniconic sijou/Kherai devotion | Human theologian |
| 22 | Confidence in Prayer | Medium | confidence_assurance, advocate | 3:22; 5:14-15 | Direct access through Christ, not mediated petitions carried by a doudini/ओझा | Native speaker review |
| 23 | The Testimony of God Concerning the Son | High | testimony, water_blood_spirit, confess_christ | 5:6-11 | God’s self-testimony is unique/self-authenticating; “water” is testimonial only, not an independently efficacious ritual substance | Human theologian |
| 24 | Perfect Love Casts Out Fear | High | fear, perfected, torment_punishment, god_is_love_statement | 4:17-18 | Direct apologetic contact with the lived anxious-propitiatory posture toward Bathoubwrai/Kherai pantheon | Human theologian |
| 25 | Walking in the Light (Sanctified Conduct) | Medium | light, walk_conduct, abide | 1:6-7; 2:6; 2:9-11 | Habitual moral conduct in fellowship with God, not ritual purity observance timed around ceremonies | Native speaker review |
| 26 | Sin Unto Death and Apostasy | High | sin_unto_death, confidence_assurance, advocate | 5:16-17 | Maps too easily onto folk taboo-violation/curse-remedy category; is settled unrepentant rejection of Christ, not a magical curse | Human theologian |
| 27 | Distinguishing Children of God from Children of the Devil | Medium | children_of_god, devil, lawlessness, liar, murderer | 3:8-10; 3:12; 3:15 | Devil is a personal, defeated moral adversary, not one of the diffuse amoral nature/ancestral spirits managed via Bathou/Kherai ritual | Native speaker review |
| 28 | Pastoral Address and Epistolary Purpose | Low | beloved_address, little_children_address, young_men_fathers_address, write, understanding | 1:4; 2:1; 2:12-14; 5:13; 5:20 | Standard epistolary vocabulary; risk limited to losing the letter’s warm register | Automated review |

Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Coverage
1 John 1 — Fellowship, Light, and Confession of Sin
Doctrines active in this chapter:
- The Incarnation of Christ (1:1-2) — the letter opens with eyewitness testimony to the Word of Life “made manifest,” establishing the incarnation as foundational before any ethical instruction begins.
- Eternal Life (1:2) — introduced immediately alongside the incarnation; life is “with the Father” and was “made manifest to us.”
- Fellowship with God (1:3; 1:6-7) and Fellowship with One Another (1:3; 1:7) — presented as mutually verifying from the letter’s opening lines.
- God is Light (1:5; 1:7) — the letter’s first great essence-statement, governing everything that follows in chapters 1-2.
- Walking in the Light / Sanctified Conduct (1:6-7) — the behavioral outworking of the light-doctrine.
- Confession of Sin (1:8-10) — introduces the confessional dynamic central to the letter’s pastoral purpose.
- Cleansing and Forgiveness of Sin (1:7, 1:9) — Christ’s blood as the cleansing agent, paired with confession.
- Pastoral Address and Epistolary Purpose (1:4) — “that our joy may be full.”
Translation risk summary for Chapter 1: This chapter carries three Critical-risk doctrines (Incarnation, Eternal Life, God is Light) and two High/Critical risk doctrines (Fellowship with God, Cleansing and Forgiveness of Sin) within its first ten verses — the highest doctrinal density-per-verse in the letter. All Phase 2 work on Chapter 1 must be prioritized for early theologian sign-off, consistent with 08_core_glossary.md’s recommendation that “God is Light” be resolved before any Phase 2 translation of this chapter proceeds.
1 John 2 — Advocacy, Commandments, the World, and Antichrist
Doctrines active in this chapter:
- Christ’s Ongoing Advocacy (2:1) and Propitiation / Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice (2:2) — the pastoral remedy for the sin named in 1:8-10.
- Obedience to God’s Commandments (2:3-4).
- Fellowship with One Another (2:9-11, via the light/darkness-toward-brother framing) and Walking in the Light (2:6, 2:9-11).
- The World and Its Desires (2:15-17) — lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life.
- Antichrist and False Teaching (2:18-23, 2:26).
- Overcoming the World (2:13-14) — addressed to “young men” and “little children.”
- Christ’s Second Coming (2:28).
- Pastoral Address and Epistolary Purpose (2:1, 2:12-14) — the “little children / fathers / young men” address structure.
Translation risk summary for Chapter 2: This is the chapter with the highest concentration of Critical propitiation/advocacy vocabulary (2:1-2), requiring the theologian-reviewed बलि/बिनयगिरि renderings to be locked before proceeding. The World and Its Desires (Medium) requires careful sense-flagging of दुनिया against its later positive use in 4:9.
1 John 3 — New Birth, Righteous Living, and Love for the Brethren
Doctrines active in this chapter:
- New Birth (Born of God) (3:9) and Children of God / Sonship (3:1-2, 3:10).
- Distinguishing Children of God from Children of the Devil (3:8-10, 3:12, 3:15) — including the Cain narrative (proper name: Cain).
- Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (3:10-17) — the chapter’s central pastoral argument, including “laying down one’s life” (3:16).
- Assurance of Salvation (3:19-21) — the “heart condemns” passage.
- Confidence in Prayer (3:22) — first occurrence, paired with obedience.
- Obedience to God’s Commandments (3:22-24).
Translation risk summary for Chapter 3: The बेंसे (“seed”) metaphor at 3:9 requires explicit flagging as scriptural metaphor against strong Bodo clan/afad lineage values, and the New Birth doctrine’s जायनाय-not-जोनोम distinction must be reinforced here for the first time at full doctrinal weight.
1 John 4 — God is Love, Testing the Spirits, and Perfect Love (Core Passage)
Doctrines active in this chapter: This chapter contains the curriculum’s core passage (4:7-21) and the highest doctrinal concentration in the letter.
- Testing the Spirits (4:1-6) — the letter’s single highest-priority discernment doctrine.
- The Incarnation of Christ (4:2-3, 4:9, 4:14) — the confessional test’s content.
- Antichrist and False Teaching (4:3).
- Overcoming the World (4:4).
- God is Love (4:7-8, 4:16, 4:19) — the letter’s second great essence-statement, structurally paired with 1:5.
- Propitiation / Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice (4:10).
- Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (4:7-8, 4:20-21).
- Fellowship with God (4:13).
- Assurance of Salvation (4:17-18) and Perfect Love Casts Out Fear (4:17-18) — the letter’s climactic pastoral-apologetic statement.
- The World and Its Desires — note on the positive sense of κόσμος at 4:9 (God’s love for “the world”), requiring sense-disambiguation from 2:15-17 and 5:19.
Translation risk summary for Chapter 4: This is the theological anchor chapter of the entire curriculum. Every segment in 4:7-21 must be flagged for mandatory human theologian review per the escalation rules; the God is Love statement (4:8, 4:16) must be rendered verbatim-identically at both occurrences and cross-checked against 1:5’s God is Light statement for structural consistency.
1 John 5 — Faith’s Victory, Eternal Life, Testimony, and Closing Warnings
Doctrines active in this chapter:
- Overcoming the World (5:4-5) — “whoever is born of God overcomes the world… by faith.”
- New Birth (Born of God) (5:1, 5:4, 5:18).
- The Testimony of God Concerning the Son (5:6-11) — the water-blood-Spirit triad.
- Eternal Life (5:11-13, 5:20) — the letter’s climactic assurance statement, “that you may know.”
- Assurance of Salvation (5:13).
- Confidence in Prayer (5:14-15).
- Sin Unto Death and Apostasy (5:16-17).
- Idolatry and Exclusive Devotion to the True God (5:20-21) — the letter’s closing warning, “keep yourselves from idols.”
- Pastoral Address and Epistolary Purpose (5:13, 5:20).
Translation risk summary for Chapter 5: The closing verse’s मूर्ति (idols) requires the widest teaching-note expansion in the curriculum, since Bathou devotion is aniconic and could otherwise be read as falling outside the warning’s scope. Sin Unto Death (5:16-17) requires explicit theologian framing against the folk taboo-curse category before deployment.
Full-Book Coverage Confirmation
Every chapter of 1 John (1–5) has been reviewed above and contributes load-bearing doctrinal content; no chapter is silently omitted or treated as a scope boundary. The core passage (4:7-21) is confirmed as the theological anchor — carrying the highest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the letter — but the full doctrinal architecture supporting it (light/darkness in ch. 1, advocacy/propitiation in ch. 2, new birth/brotherly love in ch. 3, testimony/assurance/idolatry in ch. 5) has been mapped in full per the PRD Phase 1 mandate.

Critical Risk Doctrines
God is Light
Bodo name: ईश्वर उजावनि जोरा
Key terms: light, darkness, god_is_light_statement, walk_conduct
Review routing: Human theologian
This essence-statement (structurally identical to “God is love,” 4:8) requires direct theologian confirmation that the Bodo copula can bear an ontological claim, not merely a possession/quality claim. It also collides concretely with Bathou cosmology, where fire/light (or) is one of the five sijou-branch elements and lamp-lighting is part of Bathou/Kherai household ritual vocabulary; teaching must state explicitly that this is a moral/relational claim about God’s truthfulness, not an identification of God with the fire-element.
God is Love
Bodo name: ईश्वर प्रेमनि जोरा
Key terms: love_noun, love_verb, god_is_love_statement, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian
The single highest-stakes doctrinal statement in the letter. Bathou religious life relates to Bathoubwrai and the Kherai pantheon chiefly through reciprocal exchange (offerings for protection/prosperity), and Brahma Dharma’s reformed ethic frames divine-human relationship around moral governance and accumulated पुण्य (merit) — neither affirms that ultimate reality’s own nature IS other-directed love. This gap must be taught explicitly, and the Bodo rendering must be verbatim-identical at 4:8 and 4:16.
Cleansing and Forgiveness of Sin
Bodo name: गुनाहनि साफनाय आरो माफनाय
Key terms: cleanse, confess_sin, propitiation, advocate
Review routing: Human theologian
Creates direct tension with the baseline’s own restriction reserving साफ for physical/ritual cleanliness (to keep it distinct from Kherai puja’s pre-trance purification rites). 1 John 1:7,9 requires a term for moral, judicial cleansing from sin’s guilt by Christ’s blood, for which neither bare साफ (too ritual/external) nor पबित्रनाय (the Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work, not a once-for-all judicial act) alone suffices. This provisional compound requires theologian sign-off before wide deployment.
Propitiation / Christ’s Atoning Sacrifice
Bodo name: गुनाहनि थाखाय बलि
Key terms: propitiation, confess_sin, cleanse
Review routing: Human theologian
बलि is the doctrinally correct register (a costly offering laid before a deity) precisely because it is a live, currently-practiced category in Bodo religious life, but the directional logic must be inverted and taught repeatedly: in traditional Bathou/Kherai practice, the household offers बलि TO the deity for protection/favor (human-initiated, repeatable, reciprocal); in 1 John, GOD HIMSELF provides the बलि, once, by his own initiative, fully satisfying the debt. The rejected alternative प्रायश्चित्त (self-performed penance) must never be used, since it relocates the atoning action to the worshipper.
Christ’s Ongoing Advocacy
Bodo name: मसीहनि बिनयगिरि खान्थि
Key terms: advocate, confess_sin
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s advocacy before the Father is a unique, once-secured, heavenly legal standing grounded in his own righteousness and atoning death — not a repeatable ritual petition carried by a doudini or ओझा between a household and Bathoubwrai/the Kherai pantheon on the household’s behalf.
New Birth (Born of God)
Bodo name: ईश्वरनिफ्राय जायनाय
Key terms: born_of_god, seed_of_god, children_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Built on native Bodo जायनाय rather than the Sanskrit-loan जोनोम used in the baseline’s forbidden फिन जोनोम compound, to avoid rebirth/reincarnation associations Brahma Dharma absorbed from Hindu teaching. “Born of God” is a single, decisive, non-repeatable spiritual birth, not one turn of a cycle, and this distinction must be stated explicitly at every occurrence.
The Incarnation of Christ
Bodo name: मसीहनि मानसि गुदि सोलायनाय
Key terms: incarnation, flesh, manifested, confess_christ, test_the_spirits
Review routing: Human theologian
The confessional test for true versus false spirits in this letter (4:2-3) turns entirely on this doctrine. Must be sharply distinguished from the doudini’s Kherai-trance possession, in which a deity temporarily seizes and speaks through a human medium — Bathou worship’s own aniconic character (centered on the sijou plant, not an embodied image) makes any embodiment language doctrinally loaded and in need of careful framing.
Testing the Spirits
Bodo name: आत्थाफोरखौ सोलोंनाय
Key terms: test_the_spirits, spirit_generic_tested, spirit_of_truth, spirit_of_error, confess_christ
Review routing: Human theologian
This is the single highest-priority discernment doctrine in the curriculum. Testing which spirit speaks through a prophet, oracle, or medium is already a live, currently-practiced category in Bodo village life, governed by lineage, ritual correctness, or trance authenticity in Kherai puja. Teaching must state explicitly that the ONLY valid apostolic test is confession of Christ’s true incarnate identity, displacing every ritual or experiential criterion from traditional practice.
Eternal Life
Bodo name: अनन्त जिउ
Key terms: eternal_life, confidence_assurance, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Bathouism has no developed eschatological life-after-death category oriented toward reconciliation with a personal God (its concerns are this-life protection and prosperity), and Brahma Dharma’s मोक्ष-style liberation (forbidden in the baseline) must never be substituted. 1 John’s distinctive claim that this life may be KNOWN AND POSSESSED NOW (5:13) is a significant apologetic point requiring explicit teaching against both traditions’ uncertainty about ultimate destiny.
Idolatry and Exclusive Devotion to the True God
Bodo name: मूर्तिफ्राय सोमजिनाय
Key terms: idols, true_god, world_opposed_system
Review routing: Human theologian
मूर्ति narrowly denotes carved/cast image-idols, but Bathou worship of Bathoubwrai through the sijou plant is explicitly aniconic. A translation or teaching that renders this warning narrowly risks the false implication that traditional Bathou household and Kherai practice falls outside its scope merely because no literal image is involved. Teacher notes must state explicitly that the warning covers any object, plant, ritual locus, or spirit-being treated as a rival focus of worship or trust — aniconic as well as iconic.
High Risk Doctrines
Fellowship with God
Bodo name: ईश्वरजों गोसो जोंथानाय
Key terms: fellowship, abide, light, confess_sin
Review routing: Human theologian
Fellowship with God is a relational, moral walking-in-the-light with a personal God, not the occasional ritual approach to Bathoubwrai through the sijou plant or the mediated approach a doudini secures during Kherai trance. This distinction requires explicit teaching, since the underlying Bodo vocabulary (गोसो जोंथानाय) is otherwise low-risk on its own.
Confession of Sin
Bodo name: गुनाहनि स्वीकारनाय
Key terms: confess_sin, sin, faithful_trustworthy, liar
Review routing: Human theologian
The same verb (स्वीकार खालामनाय) is also used for confessing Christ’s identity (4:15); the two senses (admission of guilt vs. saving public affirmation) must never be flattened together. Confession of sin here is addressed to a personal, holy God, not a ritual admission seeking to restore household/community harmony after a taboo violation.
Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Bodo name: बाईखौ प्रेम खालामनाय: गोदान जायनायनि साक्ष्य
Key terms: love_verb, born_of_god, brother, liar
Review routing: Human theologian
Love for the brethren is evidence, not the cause, of a prior divine act of regeneration; teaching must resist any reading that reframes love as a merit-generating performance (Brahma Dharma-adjacent) or a reciprocal social debt confined within clan (afad) lines rather than extending to the whole cross-clan believing community.
Children of God / Sonship
Bodo name: ईश्वरनि फिसाफोर
Key terms: children_of_god, seed_of_god, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be taught as complementary to, not a replacement for, the baseline’s legal-adoption doctrine (गोसोआव फैनाय): Romans emphasizes legal placement into inheritance rights, John emphasizes organic new birth from God’s own life. The बेंसे (“seed”) language deliberately echoes Davidic-lineage vocabulary and must be flagged as a scriptural metaphor, not literal genealogy, given strong Bodo clan/afad lineage values.
Antichrist and False Teaching
Bodo name: मसीहनि बिरोधी आरो मैथाइ शिक्षा
Key terms: antichrist, spirit_of_error, liar, confess_christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Antichrist is a specific theological category — denial of Christ’s true incarnate identity — and must not be conflated with a generic evil spirit or malevolent being from the populated Bathou/Kherai spirit taxonomy, which has its own distinct means of ritual identification and remedy.
Assurance of Salvation
Bodo name: फोरायनायनि निश्चय
Key terms: confidence_assurance, eternal_life, heart_condemns, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Confidence before God must be grounded explicitly in Christ’s finished atoning work and settled relationship with him, never in an accumulated record of ritual offerings, purifications, or merit — the default basis of confidence before Bathoubwrai/Kherai pantheon and under Brahma Dharma’s ethic respectively.
Overcoming the World
Bodo name: दुनियाखौ जिनाय
Key terms: overcome_victory, world_opposed_system, born_of_god, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Given the Bodoland Territorial Region’s recent history of ethnic-political armed struggle, “overcoming/victory” vocabulary carries a real risk of being unconsciously reheard in militant or territorial-political registers. Teaching must make explicit that this is a decisive spiritual victory accomplished through faith in Christ, not a call to any form of communal, political, or martial conquest.
Christ’s Second Coming
Bodo name: मसीहनि फिन फैनाय
Key terms: parousia_second_coming, confidence_assurance, day_of_judgment
Review routing: Human theologian
The morpheme फिन (“again”) also occurs inside the baseline’s explicitly forbidden फिन जोनोम compound (rebirth/reincarnation). Translators and teachers must be shown explicitly that फिन फैनाय (a single future historical event, Christ’s own personal return) is doctrinally distinct from a rebirth cycle despite the shared morpheme.
The Testimony of God Concerning the Son
Bodo name: गोरानि सोमोन्दै ईश्वरनि साक्ष्य
Key terms: testimony, water_blood_spirit, confess_christ
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s own self-testimony (5:9) is a unique, self-authenticating category, distinct from any human witness, ritual attestation, or a doudini’s own trance-testimony about spiritual realities; “water” in this triad must be taught as purely testimonial reference to Christ’s baptism, not an independently efficacious ritual substance.
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
Bodo name: पूरा प्रेमजों गिबिखौ फेलेनाय
Key terms: fear, perfected, torment_punishment, god_is_love_statement
Review routing: Human theologian
Anxious fear of displeasing or being harmed by unpredictable spirit-powers is a live, motivating force in traditional Bathou household and Kherai religious life, where propitiatory offerings exist precisely to manage such fear. This doctrine must be taught as making direct, pointed apologetic contact with exactly that lived anxious-propitiatory posture, not as a generic psychological reassurance.
Sin Unto Death and Apostasy
Bodo name: मोदोमाव थांनाय गुनाह
Key terms: sin_unto_death, confidence_assurance, advocate
Review routing: Human theologian
This phrase maps disturbingly easily onto an existing folk-religious category — a taboo violation bringing a supernatural curse remedied through ritual means. Teaching must make clear this is NOT a magical curse-consequence but a settled state of unrepentant rejection of Christ, addressed only through repentance and faith, never through ritual remedy.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Fellowship with One Another
Bodo name: गोबां-गोबांजों गोसो जोंथानाय
Key terms: fellowship, brother, beloved_address
Review routing: Native speaker review
1 John presents fellowship with God and fellowship with one another as mutually verifying, a distinctive emphasis of this letter. Risk is moderate: the main danger is narrowing this fellowship to clan (afad) or village-based social association rather than the whole cross-clan believing community.
The World and Its Desires
Bodo name: दुनियानि खमोफोर
Key terms: world_opposed_system, lust_of_flesh, lust_of_eyes, pride_of_life
Review routing: Native speaker review
κόσμος’s two opposed senses (loved by God at 4:9; the rejected system here) use the identical Bodo word दुनिया and must be sense-flagged at every occurrence to prevent confusion between the two meanings within the same short letter.
Obedience to God’s Commandments
Bodo name: आदेशनि मानोन
Key terms: commandment, burdensome, love_verb
Review routing: Native speaker review
Christ’s ἐντολή (relational directive) must be kept distinct from बिथान (the Mosaic covenant-code as a whole) and from the codified conduct-rules Brahma Dharma introduced in its early-20th-century reform, so that obedience is taught as flowing from love and faith rather than experienced as external legal burden.
Confidence in Prayer
Bodo name: बिनयनायाव निश्चय
Key terms: confidence_assurance, advocate
Review routing: Native speaker review
Direct, confident access to God through Christ’s own standing, not petitions traditionally carried to Bathoubwrai or the Kherai pantheon through a doudini or ओझा ritual specialist. Risk is moderate since the underlying prayer vocabulary is otherwise established.
Walking in the Light (Sanctified Conduct)
Bodo name: उजावाव जिउ थानाय
Key terms: light, walk_conduct, abide
Review routing: Native speaker review
Habitual moral conduct in fellowship with God, distinguished from ritual purity observance timed around Bathou/Kherai ceremonies; the underlying idiom (जिउ थानाय) is otherwise low-risk on its own.
Distinguishing Children of God from Children of the Devil
Bodo name: ईश्वरनि फिसा आरो शैताननि फिसानि गोमोन
Key terms: children_of_god, devil, lawlessness, liar, murderer
Review routing: Native speaker review
The devil here is a personal, defeated moral adversary of God, not one member of the diffuse, largely amoral population of nature-spirits and ancestral spirits managed through Bathou/Kherai ritual practice; this ethical-lineage contrast (righteousness/love vs. lawlessness/hatred) is a moral, not a ritual-purity, distinction.
Low Risk Doctrines
Pastoral Address and Epistolary Purpose
Bodo name: फिसामोनखौ लिरनायनि दायो
