Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Philippians 1–4 (English → Bodo)
Scope and Method
This analysis covers the entire book of Philippians, chapter 1 through chapter 4, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, Philippians 2:1–11 (the “kenosis hymn”), receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study of its load-bearing theological terms using the same seven fields: Original word, Transliteration, Literal meaning, Semantic range, English variants, Contextual theological meaning, Destination-language (Bodo) rendering and risk.
Per the mandate governing this Language Package, any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json is reused exactly — the established Bodo rendering, transliteration, and risk tier are carried forward without alteration. Where Philippians introduces genuinely new theological vocabulary (most importantly the kenosis hymn’s Christological terms, and the letter’s distinctive vocabulary of joy, contentment, partnership, and “pressing on”), new provisional Bodo renderings are proposed here, built — as the baseline itself does — from established Bodo morphemes (गोसो gwsw “heart,” मन mon “mind,” रूप rup “form,” सक्ति sakti “power,” फोराय phoray “rescue/save,” सोलायनाय solainai “turning/becoming”) and from Sanskrit/Assamese loanwords already naturalized in Bodo Christian usage (following the pattern of पबित्र, धार्मिकता, महिमा, मंगल). All new provisional terms are explicitly flagged pending confirmation by a Bodo-speaking theologian, exactly as the baseline practice requires for its own provisional compounds.
Bodo’s comparative-religion landscape — Bathouism (aniconic worship of Bathoubwrai through the five-branched sijou plant; the Kherai puja, in which a doudini medium enters ritual trance-possession) and Brahma Dharma (the 1912 Sanskritized reform movement built on Hindu-influenced monotheism, karma, and merit) — governs every risk judgment below, as it does in the baseline Romans package.
PART A — Core Passage: Philippians 2:1–11 (Verse-by-Verse)
Philippians 2:1
Εἴ τις οὖν παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ, εἴ τι παραμύθιον ἀγάπης, εἴ τις κοινωνία πνεύματος, εἴ τις σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παράκλησις | paraklesis | ”a calling alongside” | exhortation, encouragement, comfort, appeal | encouragement / comfort / consolation | The mutual encouragement believers have “in Christ” grounds Paul’s appeal to unity; not generic cheering-up but Christ-rooted strengthening. | New term. Provisional: मसीहाव गोसो होनाय (Mosihao gwsw honai), built on baseline exhort-root गोसो होनाय. Medium risk: must retain relational, Christ-anchored sense, not generic comfort. |
| παραμύθιον | paramythion | ”a consoling word” | comfort, solace, encouragement arising from love | consolation / comfort | Love’s comforting effect within the believing fellowship, paired with paraklesis. | New. Provisional: मोसानायनि सान्दांनाय (mwsanaini sandangnai, “comfort of love”). Low-Medium risk. |
| κοινωνία πνεύματος | koinonia pneumatos | ”partnership/sharing of spirit” | fellowship, joint participation, shared life | fellowship of the Spirit / participation in the Spirit | Shared participation in the one Holy Spirit is the ground of the church’s unity — not an emotional bond but a Spirit-given reality. | Reuse baseline गोसो जोंथानाय (fellowship) + पबित्र आत्था (Holy Spirit, Critical baseline term) → पबित्र आत्थानि गोसो जोंथानाय. High risk: must not be heard as shared possession-trance experience such as communal participation in a doudini’s Kherai trance; this is Spirit-given unity of heart and purpose, not an altered ritual state. |
| σπλάγχνα | splagchna | ”inward parts, bowels” | seat of emotion; deep affection, tender compassion | affection / tender mercy / compassion | Christ-given, gut-level tenderness among believers. | New. Provisional: गोसोनि मोसानाय (gwswni mwsanai, “affection of the heart”). Low-Medium risk. |
| οἰκτιρμοί | oiktirmoi | ”compassions, mercies” | pity, tender mercy | mercy / compassion / tender mercies | Paired with splagchna to intensify the emotional depth of Christian compassion. | New. Provisional: दयानाय (doyanai, Sanskrit/Assamese loan “mercy/compassion”). Low risk. |
Philippians 2:2
πληρώσατέ μου τὴν χαράν, ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε, τὴν αὐτὴν ἀγάπην ἔχοντες, σύμψυχοι, τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χαρά | chara | ”joy, gladness” | joy, delight, gladness (often independent of circumstance in Paul) | joy / gladness / delight | Paul’s joy is completed by the Philippians’ unity; joy in Philippians is repeatedly paired with suffering, not with prosperity. | New key term (see also 1:4, 1:25, 4:4, 4:10). Provisional: आनन्द (anondo, Sanskrit/Assamese loan). Medium risk: must be distinguished from the communal festival gaiety of Kherai puja celebrations honoring Mainao (goddess of wealth/rice) — biblical joy in Philippians is grounded in Christ regardless of circumstance, not tied to a successful harvest-ritual outcome. |
| φρονέω | phroneo | ”to think, to set one’s mind/disposition” | settled attitude, mindset, outlook, way of thinking-and-feeling together | be of the same mind / think / set one’s mind on | The repeated key verb of Philippians (10x): a shared, deliberate disposition modeled on Christ himself (2:5). | New key term. Provisional: गोसो-मन थानाय (gwsw-mon thanai, “having a heart-mind [disposition]”). High risk (core to “Unity and Humility” doctrine): must convey a settled, willed disposition, not fleeting emotional harmony, and must not be conflated with the shared altered-consciousness state of communal trance participation in Kherai puja. |
| σύμψυχος | sympsychos | ”same-souled, united in soul” | being of one soul/accord | being of one accord / united in spirit | Deep, soul-level unity among believers. | New. Provisional: मोनसे गोसोआव थानाय (monse gwswao thanai, “being of one heart”). Medium risk. |
| ἀγάπη | agape | ”love” | self-giving, unconditional love; distinct from erotic or merely familial love | love | The love that grounds Christian unity and, climactically, Christ’s self-emptying (2:6-8). | New. Provisional: मोसानाय (mwsanai). Medium risk: must be distinguished from the reciprocal, exchange-based devotion pattern of traditional Bathou/Kherai offerings (cf. baseline “grace” risk note) — agape gives without expecting return. |
Philippians 2:3
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐριθεία | eritheia | ”faction, rivalry” | selfish ambition, party-strife, self-promotion | selfish ambition / rivalry / strife | The opposite disposition to the Christ-pattern about to be described. | New. Provisional: गिबिनि थाखाय गनायथिनाय (gibini thakhai gonaithinai, “seeking for oneself”). Medium risk. |
| κενοδοξία | kenodoxia | ”empty glory/opinion” | vainglory, empty conceit, self-important pride | vain conceit / empty ambition / vainglory | Self-inflating pride, the inverse of Christ’s self-emptying (κενόω, v.7) — a deliberate wordplay in Greek. | New. Provisional: बांद्रा महिमा गनायथिनाय (bandra mohima gonaithinai, “seeking empty/false glory”). Medium risk: preserve the Greek wordplay with κενόω (v.7) in translator notes even where it cannot be reproduced in Bodo. |
| ταπεινοφροσύνη | tapeinophrosyne | ”lowliness of mind” | humility, lowliness, unpretentiousness | humility / lowliness of mind | The positive virtue commended, embodied supremely by Christ (2:5-8). | New key term. Provisional: गोहोम गोसोनाय (gohom gwswnai, “lowly-heartedness”). High risk (core to “Unity and Humility” doctrine): must not be read as social self-deprecation tied to a lower clan/afad status in Bodo kinship hierarchy, and must not be assimilated to Brahma Dharma’s disciplined self-restraint ethic pursued for merit; this is Christ-modeled, others-centered humility flowing from security in Christ, not status-management. |
| ὑπερέχω | hyperecho | ”to surpass, excel, hold above” | to regard as more important, to surpass in value | consider more significant / surpass / excel | Believers are to regard others’ interests as surpassing their own. | New. Provisional: गोजौ मानोनाय (gwjou manonai, “regarding as greater”). Medium risk. Note: the same root reappears at 4:7 (“peace…which surpasses all understanding”) — preserve lexical link in teaching. |
Philippians 2:4
μὴ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἕκαστος σκοποῦντες, ἀλλὰ [καὶ] τὰ ἑτέρων ἕκαστοι
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σκοπέω | skopeo | ”to look at, watch, consider” | to fix attention on, look out for, be intent on | look out for / be concerned with / consider | Attentiveness redirected from self-interest to others’ interests. | New. Provisional: नाजानाय (najanai, “to look/watch/consider”). Low risk. Lexically related to σκοπός (“goal,” 3:14) — note the link for the “Pressing on toward the Goal” doctrine. |
Philippians 2:5
τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φρονέω (imperative) | phroneite | ”have this mindset” | see above | have this mind / think this way | The hinge verse: the preceding ethical appeal is now explicitly grounded in the pattern of Christ himself, introducing the hymn (2:6-11). | Reuse गोसो-मन थानाय. High risk: the hymn that follows must be taught as an ethical exemplar for the church’s unity and humility, not merely a doctrinal recitation about Christ detached from the imperative “have this mind.” |
Philippians 2:6
ὃς ἐν μορφῇ θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μορφή θεοῦ | morphe theou | ”form of God” | the essential, defining nature/mode of being of God | form of God / divine nature/essence | Christ’s pre-existent, essential divine nature — not a temporary appearance. | New. Provisional: ईश्वरनि रूप (Isornni rup, रूप = Sanskrit/Assamese loan “form”). Critical risk: must convey Christ’s real, essential, pre-existent divine nature — not one deity-form among the many divine figures recognized in the Bathou pantheon, and not merely a visible appearance. Bathouism’s aniconic worship (no image represents Bathoubwrai) makes any “form of God” language doctrinally unfamiliar territory requiring explicit ground-up teaching, not assumed comprehension. |
| ὑπάρχω | hyparcho | ”to exist, be in reality” (stronger than εἰμί) | actual, continuous, real subsistence | being (fundamentally, in reality) | Christ did not “become” divine at some point; he continuously, really existed in the form of God prior to and apart from the incarnation. | New. Provisional: गोरोबबो थानाय (gorobbo thanai, “actually/really existing”). High risk: must convey ongoing pre-existent reality, not a one-time event of “becoming.” |
| ἁρπαγμός | harpagmos | ”a thing seized/grasped/exploited” | something to be forcibly grasped, held onto for personal advantage, or exploited | a thing to be grasped / something to cling to / robbery (archaic gloss) | Christ did not regard his equality with God as something to exploit for his own advantage — the ground of the self-emptying that follows. | New; genuinely contested even in Greek scholarship. Provisional descriptive rendering: बलजबरीजों लाबो हैनाय जिनिस (boljabori jwng labo hainai jinis, “a thing that could be seized by force”), used within the verb phrase “did not consider [equality with God] a thing to cling to for advantage.” High risk — flag for theologian review: avoid the older archaic English gloss “robbery”; the rendering must support the kenotic reading that Christ freely relinquished the outward exercise of divine prerogative, without at any point relinquishing divine nature itself. |
| ἴσα θεῷ | isa theo | ”equal to God” | full ontological equality with God | equality with God | Full, real, uncompromised equality with God the Father — not a lesser or derivative divinity. | New. Provisional: ईश्वरनि सोमान (Isornni soman, सोमान = Assamese/Hindi loan “equal”). Critical risk: directly ties to the baseline’s Deity of Christ doctrine (Critical); must never be softened to suggest a “great spirit-being” among the Kherai pantheon rather than the one true God’s own equal. |
Philippians 2:7
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν (κενόω) | heauton ekenosen (kenoo) | “he emptied himself” | to empty, pour out, make void, render ineffective | emptied himself / made himself nothing / poured himself out | The theological root of “kenosis”: Christ’s voluntary self-limitation in taking on human nature, while never ceasing to be fully God. | New — the single most theologically loaded term in the book. Provisional: गिबिनि महिमा गोहोम सोलायनाय (gibini mohima gohom solainai, “turning his own glory into lowliness”). CRITICAL RISK — mandatory theologian review: this must be taught as voluntary self-limitation in status and outward glory while retaining full deity, never as a diminishment or loss of divine nature. This is sharply and explicitly distinct from the Kherai puja’s doudini framework, in which a deity’s power fills and possesses a human medium — a filling, not an emptying; involuntary on the human side, not a voluntary divine act of self-giving. This is a genuine conceptual gap requiring ground-up teaching, exactly as the baseline treats “incarnation.” |
| μορφὴν δούλου λαβών | morphen doulou labon | ”having taken the form of a slave/servant” | assuming the essential nature/mode of being of a servant | taking the form of a servant / becoming a slave | Christ took on, in full reality, the nature of a servant — paralleling and contrasting μορφῇ θεοῦ (v.6). | New. Provisional: दासनि रूप लाबोनाय (dasni rup labwnai, “taking the form of a servant,” दास = Sanskrit loan “servant/slave”). Critical risk: the same root रूप (rup) must be used here as in μορφή θεοῦ (v.6) to preserve the hymn’s deliberate structural parallel for the Bodo reader/hearer. |
| ὁμοίωμα ἀνθρώπων | homoioma anthropon | ”likeness of men” | resemblance, likeness (genuine, not merely apparent) | likeness of men / human likeness | Christ genuinely took on human likeness — not merely appeared human. | New. Provisional: मानसिनि जोरा (manwsini jora, “human likeness,” reusing मानसि “human” from the baseline incarnation term). High risk: must convey genuine likeness, guarding against any docetic misreading that Christ’s humanity was only apparent. |
| σχῆμα | schema | ”outward form, fashion, appearance” | the outwardly perceived shape/manner | outward appearance / form / fashion | Paired with ὁμοίωμα to describe how Christ’s humanity was outwardly recognized as human. | New. Provisional: बाहागोरनि जोरा (bahagworni jora, “outward form”). Medium risk: must be taught together with ὁμοίωμα so the two terms jointly affirm real, not merely apparent, humanity. |
Philippians 2:8
ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου, θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ταπεινόω (ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν) | etapeinosen heauton | ”he humbled himself” | to lower, humble | humbled himself | The verbal counterpart of ταπεινοφροσύνη (v.3) — Christ is the supreme example of the humility commanded. | New; root verb of ταπεινοφροσύνη. Provisional: गिबिखौ गोहोम होबाय (gibikhw gohom hobai, “he made himself low”). High risk: core verb of the “Unity and Humility” doctrine. |
| ὑπήκοος | hypekoos | ”obedient” | submissive, obedient (to another’s authority) | obedient | Christ’s obedience to the Father extended even to death — the ground and pattern for the church’s own obedient faith. | New; related to baseline “obedience of faith” (बिश्वासनि मानोन). Provisional: मानोनाव थानाय (manwnao thanai, “being in obedience,” reusing मानोन root). High risk: must be distinguished from Brahma Dharma’s structured rule-obedience ethic (as already flagged for “obedience of faith” in the baseline) — Christ’s obedience here is relational, self-giving submission to the Father, the very pattern believers are to imitate (2:5). |
| θάνατος σταυροῦ | thanatos staurou | ”death of a cross” | crucifixion specifically, the most shameful Roman execution | death on a cross | The depth of Christ’s humiliation: not merely death, but the specific shame of crucifixion reserved for slaves and the lowest criminals. | New. Provisional: क्रुसआव गोथोबनाय (krusao gwthobnai, “dying on the cross,” क्रुस = established regional Bible loanword for “cross”). Critical risk: retain the specific shame/horror of crucifixion; verify क्रुस against the current printed Bodo Bible for consistency. |
Philippians 2:9
διὸ καὶ ὁ θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὑπερύψωσεν (ὑπερυψόω) | hyperypsosen | ”highly exalted, super-exalted” | to raise to the highest possible position | highly exalted / super-exalted | God’s vindication of the Son’s humility with the highest possible exaltation — his rightful, restored glory made manifest to all. | New. Provisional: उन्नत खालामनाय (unnoto khalamnai, उन्नत = Sanskrit loan “elevated”). Critical risk: must never use the honorific elder-titles बर’ऐ/बुरहा reserved for Bathoubwrai and the Kherai pantheon (forbidden per the baseline “lord” entry) — this is God’s unique vindication of his own Son, not an elevation to a higher rank among many spirit-beings. |
| χαρίζομαι (ἐχαρίσατο) | echarisato | ”graciously granted, gave freely” | to give as a gift, out of favor, not obligation | graciously gave / bestowed | The name is given, not earned — reinforcing that even Christ’s exaltation flows from the Father’s gracious gift, echoing the grace theme. | New; shares the root of χάρις (baseline “grace,” मोफादांनाय दान). Provisional: मोफादांथाय होबाय (mwphwdangthai hobai, “graciously gave”). High risk: retain the freely-given, unearned dimension already central to the baseline’s grace doctrine notes. |
| ὄνομα | onoma | ”name” | personal name; also authority, identity, reputation | name | ”The name above every name” carries the full weight of divine authority and identity, not merely a label. | New. Provisional: मुं (mung, ordinary Bodo word for “name”). Medium risk (theologically weighted despite simple vocabulary): requires teaching on the ancient Near Eastern/Jewish significance of “the name” as bearer of authority, not mere designation. |
Philippians 2:10
ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γόνυ κάμπτω | gony kampto | ”to bend the knee” | physical prostration signifying submission/worship | every knee shall bow | Universal, compelled submission to Christ’s authority — the appropriate posture before the exalted Lord. | New. Provisional: गुरि सोंखानाय (guri sonkhanai, “bending the knee”). High risk: similar prostration gestures are performed before Bathoubwrai/the sijou plant and within Kherai ritual; must be taught as signifying Christ’s singular, exclusive lordship over all reality — not one ritual gesture owed among several to different spirit-beings. |
| ἐπουρανίων, ἐπιγείων, καταχθονίων | epouranion, epigeion, katachthonion | ”heavenly, earthly, under-the-earth [beings]“ | the entire created cosmos in its three traditional tiers | in heaven, on earth, and under the earth | A rhetorical totality-claim: every part of the cosmos, without remainder, is subject to Christ. | New. Provisional: स्वर्गनि, हामनि, आरो पातालनि (sorgoni, hamoni, aro patalni). High risk: हा (“earth”) is one of the five sacred elements of Bathou cosmology represented by the sijou plant’s branches (ha/earth, dwi/water, bar/air, or/fire, okhrang/sky); “हामनि” (earthly) risks unintentionally invoking this five-element framework. Teaching must clarify Paul’s threefold cosmic scope is a rhetorical claim of Christ’s universal lordship, not a validation of or parallel to the Bathou five-element system. |
Philippians 2:11
καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐξομολογέω | exomologeo | ”to confess, openly acknowledge” | public, verbal acknowledgment/confession | confess / acknowledge openly | Universal, public confession of Christ’s Lordship — the hymn’s climactic act of worship. | New. Provisional: स्वीकार खालामनाय (swikar khalamnai, स्वीकार = Sanskrit/Hindi loan “acknowledge”). Critical risk: ties directly to the baseline’s Lordship of Christ confession (Romans 10:9, already Critical) — render with the same force, and for curriculum-wide consistency use identical phrasing wherever this confession recurs. |
| κύριος | kyrios | ”Lord” | supreme, exclusive authority | Lord | The confession’s content: Jesus Christ is Kyrios — exclusive, supreme Lord. | Reuse baseline प्रभु (probhu). Critical: never render with बर’ऐ/बुरहा. |
| δόξα θεοῦ πατρός | doxa theou patros | ”glory of God the Father” | God’s radiant honor and presence | to the glory of God the Father | The Son’s exaltation and universal confession ultimately glorifies the Father — the hymn resolves in unity, not competition, between Father and Son. | Reuse baseline महिमा (glory) + आफा (father). Critical: requires careful trinitarian framing — the Son’s glory and the Father’s glory are not in competition; teach this nuance explicitly. |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Philippians 1
Chapter 1 establishes the letter’s key relational and missional vocabulary: Paul’s self-designation as a δοῦλος, the church’s officers, the gospel partnership, and the paradox of joy amid imprisonment that runs through the whole book.
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος | doulos | ”slave, bondservant” | one owned by and wholly devoted to a master; also a voluntary title of honor for God’s servants | servant / bondservant / slave | Paul and Timothy’s self-chosen identity: total, willing devotion to Christ as master (1:1). | New. Provisional: दास (das, Sanskrit loan). Medium-High risk: this is Paul’s own voluntary self-designation of devoted service to Christ — must be clearly distinguished from the involuntary seizure of a human medium by a deity during Kherai trance (cf. baseline “incarnation” note); doulos-identity here is chosen, relational, and dignifying, not possession. |
| ἐπίσκοπος | episkopos | ”overseer” | one who watches over, oversees a community | overseer / bishop | A recognized office of church leadership and oversight (1:1). | New. Provisional: मण्डलीनि देख्रोंगारि (mwndolini dekhrongari, “overseer of the church,” built on the agentive pattern of baseline “apostle” गोदान जायगारि). Medium risk: distinguish from Bathou ritual specialist roles (doudini, ओझा); this is a teaching/pastoral office within the gathered assembly, not a ritual-mediumistic role. |
| διάκονος | diakonos | ”servant, deacon” | one who serves, ministers, attends to practical needs | deacon / servant / minister | A recognized office of practical service within the church (1:1). | New. Provisional: सेबागारि (sebagari, “one who serves,” from established सेवा/seba). Medium risk, same distinction as ἐπίσκοπος above. |
| κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον | koinonia eis to euangelion | ”partnership/fellowship unto the gospel” | shared participation and material partnership in gospel work | partnership in the gospel / fellowship in the gospel | The Philippians’ ongoing material and spiritual partnership with Paul’s gospel ministry (1:5) — the doctrinal anchor for “Partnership in the Gospel.” | Reuse baseline गोसो जोंथानाय (fellowship) + मंगल खबर (gospel) → मंगल खबरनि गोसो जोंथानाय. High risk: must be taught with its full material dimension (cf. 4:15-16, giving and receiving), and must resist being reheard through the reciprocal-exchange logic already flagged for “grace” — this partnership flows from shared gospel commitment, not ritual or transactional exchange for blessing. |
| ἡμέρα Χριστοῦ | hemera Christou | ”day of Christ” | the eschatological day of Christ’s return/judgment | the day of Christ / day of Jesus Christ | The future consummation toward which present growth and ministry are oriented (1:6, 1:10). | New. Provisional: मसीहनि दिन (Mosihni din). Medium risk: requires basic eschatological teaching, since neither Bathou tradition nor Brahma Dharma has a developed linear historical/eschatological “day of reckoning” concept of this kind (cf. baseline note on “resurrection” and cyclical vs. linear time). |
| καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης | karpos dikaiosynes | ”fruit of righteousness” | the visible moral/spiritual outcome produced by righteousness | fruit of righteousness | The observable outworking of a right relationship with God through Christ (1:11). | Reuse baseline धार्मिकता (righteousness) + काफल/फल (fruit — new element). Provisional compound: धार्मिकतानि फल (dharmikotani phol). High risk, inherited from धार्मिकता’s Critical baseline status: must not be read as fruit produced in order to earn righteousness (a merit-reading), but fruit that flows from righteousness already received. |
| δεσμά | desma | ”bonds, chains” | literal imprisonment; by extension, suffering for the gospel | chains / imprisonment / bonds | Paul’s literal imprisonment, repeatedly reframed as advancing rather than hindering the gospel (1:7, 1:13-14, 1:17). | New. Provisional: साकोलनाय (sakolnai, “being chained/bound”). Medium risk: central to “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment” doctrine — must retain the paradox that chains become a platform for gospel witness. |
| παρρησία | parrhesia | ”boldness, freedom of speech” | confident, unashamed openness in speech | boldness / confidence | The confident proclamation Paul prays for despite imprisonment (1:20). | New. Provisional: गोबां मनोबलजों रायनाय (gwbang monobwljwng raynai, “speaking with great courage”). Low-Medium risk. |
| τὸ ζῆν Χριστός, τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος | to zen Christos, to apothanein kerdos | ”to live [is] Christ, to die [is] gain” | Paul’s total reorientation of life’s meaning around Christ | to live is Christ and to die is gain | The famous formula expressing that Christ, not self-preservation, defines the value of both living and dying (1:21). | New. κέρδος (kerdos, “gain/profit”) provisional: फाइदा (phaida, Hindi/Assamese loan “gain/benefit”). High risk: must not be read as a fatalistic or ascetic renunciation of life (a possible resonance with Brahma Dharma’s detachment ethic); this is Christ-centered valuation, not world-denial for its own sake. |
| πολιτεύεσθε (πολιτεύομαι) | politeuesthe | ”conduct yourselves as citizens” | to live as a citizen, to conduct one’s public life | let your manner of life / conduct yourselves | Christian conduct is civic in character — a “citizenship” lived out even now (1:27), anticipating πολίτευμα in 3:20. | New; foundational for “Citizenship in Heaven” doctrine. Provisional: नागरिकनि जीबन जीनाय (nagoriknai jibon jinai, “living a citizen’s life”). High risk: see full discussion at 3:20 below. |
| συναθλέω | synathleo | ”to contend/struggle together” | joint effort in a shared struggle, athletic imagery | strive together / struggle side by side | The church’s unified struggle for the faith of the gospel (1:27). | New. Provisional: मोनसे जोंनाय बिश्वासनि थाखाय लड़ानाय (monse jwnnai biswasni thakhai lorhanai, “fighting together for the faith”). Low-Medium risk. |
| πάσχω / πάθημα | pascho / pathema | ”to suffer / suffering” | affliction, suffering, especially for Christ’s sake | suffer / suffering | Suffering for Christ is presented as a granted privilege, not merely an endurance (1:29-30). | New. Provisional: दुख सामोनाय (dukho samonai, “enduring suffering”). Medium-High risk: central to “Joy in Suffering” doctrine — must not collapse into a fatalistic acceptance of misfortune (भागी, already flagged Critical-adjacent in the baseline for providence/election), but rather purposeful participation in Christ’s own sufferings (cf. 3:10). |
| ἀγών | agon | ”contest, struggle” | struggle, conflict, athletic contest | conflict / struggle | The shared struggle believers face for the gospel (1:30). | New. Provisional: लड़ाई (lorhai, “struggle/fight”). Low risk. |
Philippians 2 (continued: 2:12–30)
Beyond the core hymn (2:1-11), the rest of chapter 2 applies the Christ-pattern to the church’s practical life and introduces cultic/sacrificial and church-office vocabulary.
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σωτηρία | soteria | ”salvation, deliverance” | deliverance, rescue, wholeness | salvation | ”Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (2:12) — the outworking, not the earning, of a salvation already given by grace. | Reuse baseline फोरायनाय (Critical). Critical risk, reinforced: this verse is especially vulnerable to a merit-reading (working for salvation) in a context shaped by Brahma Dharma’s merit ethic; must be taught alongside 2:13 (“God who works in you”) to preserve grace-priority. |
| φόβος καὶ τρόμος | phobos kai tromos | ”fear and trembling” | reverent awe, seriousness | fear and trembling | The seriousness with which the outworking of salvation is to be pursued (2:12). | New. Provisional: गोबां सोरनाय आरो लांदोंनाय (gwbang sornai aro landongnai, “great awe and trembling”). Low-Medium risk. |
| ἐνεργέω | energeo | ”to work, work in, be effective in” | to produce effect, to work powerfully within | works in you / is at work | God’s own empowering activity within the believer as the ground of the “working out” of v.12. | New. Provisional: ईश्वर बिफोर सोलायाव सक्तिजों गोबां मोनथिफुरनाय simplify: ईश्वर बिफोरनि सिङाव जागायनाय — simplest provisional: ईश्वरा सिङाव जागायनाय (Isora singao jagainai, “God working within”). High risk: must be read together with σωτηρία above to preserve the grace-priority of the passage. |
| γογγυσμός | goggysmos | ”grumbling, murmuring” | complaint, discontented murmuring | grumbling / murmuring | The behavior believers are to avoid, contrasted with the unified mind of 2:1-5 (2:14). | New. Provisional: गुनगुनानाय (gungunanai, onomatopoeic “murmuring”). Low risk. |
| διαλογισμός | dialogismos | ”reasoning, disputing” | inward reasoning, dispute, argument | disputing / arguing / questioning | Contentious inward or interpersonal reasoning to be avoided (2:14). | New. Provisional: बिबाद खालामनाय (bibad khalamnai, “disputing,” Sanskrit/Hindi loan बिबाद). Low risk. |
| ἄμεμπτος / ἀκέραιος | amemptos / akeraios | ”blameless / innocent, pure, unmixed” | without fault; pure, unadulterated | blameless / innocent / pure | The moral clarity believers are to display as “children of God” amid a crooked generation (2:15). | New. Provisional: दोष गैया आरो साफ (dosh gaiya aro saph, “without fault and pure”). Medium risk: साफ here must be understood as moral purity, not the ritual-cleanliness sense the baseline already reserves साफ for in Bathou/Kherai contexts — a translator note is required. |
| τέκνα θεοῦ | tekna theou | ”children of God” | offspring, members of God’s family | children of God | The believer’s family identity, related to but distinct from the baseline’s “adoption” doctrine (गोसोआव फैनाय). | Reuse conceptual link to baseline गोसोआव फैनाय (adoption). Medium-High risk, inherited. |
| σπένδομαι | spendomai | ”to be poured out as a libation/drink-offering” | cultic offering imagery for self-sacrificial death | poured out as a drink offering / being poured out | Paul frames his possible martyrdom as a sacrificial libation poured out alongside the Philippians’ own “sacrifice and service of faith” (2:17). | New. Provisional: बलि महर लोगोनाय (boli mohor logwnai, “being poured out like an offering,” बलि = established loanword “sacrifice/offering”). High risk: this cultic image must be taught as metaphorical self-giving, carefully distinguished from any literal offering made to Bathoubwrai or the Kherai pantheon — the direction of meaning (voluntary self-giving to God through suffering service) must be made explicit. |
| θυσία καὶ λειτουργία τῆς πίστεως | thysia kai leitourgia tes pisteos | ”sacrifice and service of faith” | the Philippians’ faith-service as itself a sacrificial offering | sacrifice and service of your faith | The Philippians’ own faithful giving/service is itself an offering to God (2:17). | New. बिश्वासनि बलि आरो सेबा (biswasni boli aro seba), reusing baseline बिश्वास + सेवा. High risk, same caution as σπένδομαι above. |
| λειτουργός | leitourgos | ”minister, one who performs sacred service” | one who serves in a public/religious capacity | minister / servant | Epaphroditus and, by extension, Paul’s other co-workers are described in service-to-God language (2:25). | New. Provisional: सेबागारि (reuse from ἐπίσκοπος entry above). Medium risk. |
| ἀπόστολος (of Epaphroditus) | apostolos | ”one sent, messenger” | in 2:25, a delegated messenger sent by the Philippians to Paul — distinct from the technical office of “Apostle” | messenger / your messenger | A lower-case, functional sense of “sent one,” not the office described by the baseline’s गोदान जायगारि. | Important distinction required: reuse गोदान जायगारि only for the technical apostolic office (as in the baseline); for this occurrence use a plain messenger term, e.g. दूत or सोंग्रा (“messenger”), with a translator note clarifying that Epaphroditus is not being called an Apostle in the technical, Romans-baseline sense. Medium risk — flag for native speaker review to avoid conflating the two senses. |
Philippians 3
Chapter 3 contains the letter’s most concentrated cluster of terms for “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law” and “Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ,” alongside the “Citizenship in Heaven” doctrine’s key term.
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κύνες | kynes | ”dogs” | a term of contempt for ritually/morally unclean outsiders | dogs (derogatory) | A sharp warning against false teachers demanding circumcision (3:2). | New. Provisional: सिमांग (simang, “dogs,” ordinary Bodo word used pejoratively as in the Greek). Low-Medium risk. |
| κατατομή | katatome | ”mutilation, cutting” | a derogatory wordplay on περιτομή (“circumcision”) | mutilation | Paul’s polemical pun: mere physical cutting without faith is “mutilation,” not true circumcision (3:2). | New. Provisional: कटानाय (katanai, “a cutting”), chosen to loosely echo खतना (see περιτομή below) as Paul’s Greek echoes περιτομή. Medium risk; wordplay largely untranslatable — flag with translator note. |
| περιτομή | peritome | ”circumcision” | the Jewish covenant sign; by extension, true inward circumcision of the heart | circumcision | The old covenant sign, reinterpreted by Paul as fulfilled by Spirit-worship rather than the flesh (3:3, 3:5). | New. Provisional: खतना (khatna, established South Asian loanword for circumcision). High risk: requires substantial Old Testament covenant-background teaching (paralleling the baseline’s notes on “covenant” and “law,” which likewise have no ready native equivalent), since Bodo culture has no comparable covenant-sign ritual; not a live syncretism risk with Bathouism, but a genuine background-knowledge gap. |
| λατρεύω πνεύματι θεοῦ | latreuo pneumati theou | ”to worship/serve by the Spirit of God” | cultic service/worship rendered in and by the Spirit | worship in/by the Spirit of God | True covenant membership is marked by Spirit-empowered worship, not physical ritual alone (3:3). | New. Reuse baseline पबित्र आत्था + new verb सेवा खालामनाय (seba khalamnai, “to render service/worship”). High risk, inherited from पबित्र आत्था’s Critical status. |
| πεποίθησις ἐν σαρκί | pepoithesis en sarki | ”confidence in the flesh” | reliance on physical/ethnic/ritual credentials for standing before God | confidence in the flesh | The very thing Paul renounces — status based on lineage, law-keeping, and ritual credentials (3:3-4). | New. Provisional: गुदिनि जायगाव बिश्वास लानाय (gudini jaigao biswas lanai, “trusting in bodily/fleshly standing”). Critical risk: this is the polemical foil for “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law” — must sharply distinguish reliance on human credentials from the baseline’s धार्मिकता received by बिश्वास. |
| Ἑβραῖος ἐξ Ἑβραίων / Φαρισαῖος | Hebraios ex Hebraion / Pharisaios | ”a Hebrew of Hebrews / a Pharisee” | proper names/titles describing Paul’s pedigree | Hebrew of Hebrews / Pharisee | Paul’s impeccable, zealous Jewish credentials, now counted as loss (3:5-6). | Proper names/titles; transliterate: हिब्रू (Hibru), फरीसी (Phorisi), following regional Bible-translation convention. Low risk (proper nouns), but requires Old Testament/Second Temple background teaching. |
| ζῆλος | zelos | ”zeal” | fervent, often intense devotion or (negatively) persecuting fervor | zeal | Paul’s former zeal, which led him to persecute the church (3:6) — a warning against zeal untempered by grace. | New. Provisional: उत्साह (utsaho, Sanskrit/Hindi loan “zeal/enthusiasm”). Low-Medium risk. |
| ζημία | zemia | ”loss, damage” | forfeiture, loss, disadvantage | loss | Paul counts his entire former status as loss compared to knowing Christ (3:7-8). | New. Provisional: लोकसान (loksan, Hindi/Assamese loan “loss/damage”). Low-Medium risk. |
| σκύβαλα | skybala | ”rubbish, refuse, dung” | worthless waste, filth (a deliberately crude, visceral term) | rubbish / garbage / dung | Paul’s vivid, deliberately shocking assessment of his former credentials compared to knowing Christ (3:8). | New. Provisional: गंदा जिनिस (gonda jinis, “filthy/worthless thing,” Hindi/Assamese loan गंदा). Medium risk: must retain Paul’s deliberate visceral force without importing the vocabulary the baseline already reserves for ritual impurity (साफ/its negation) — skybala is about worthlessness and revulsion, not ceremonial defilement. |
| δικαιοσύνη ἐκ νόμου / διὰ πίστεως Χριστοῦ | dikaiosyne ek nomou / dia pisteos Christou | ”righteousness from law / through faith in Christ” | two contrasted sources of righteous standing | righteousness from the law / righteousness through faith in Christ | The letter’s central soteriological contrast, directly parallel to Romans 3-4 (3:9). | Reuse baseline exactly: धार्मिकता (righteousness, Critical), बिथान (law, Medium-High), बिश्वास (faith, High). Critical risk, inherited in full: must retain the sharp forensic contrast; no softening toward a “law-plus-faith” synthesis. |
| γινώσκω / γνῶσις | ginosko / gnosis | ”to know / knowledge” | personal, relational, experiential knowledge (not merely factual) | to know / knowledge | ”That I may know him” (3:8, 3:10) — relational knowledge of Christ, the supreme value that eclipses all former credentials. | New. Provisional: सानां खालामनाय (sanang khalamnai, “to know [personally]”). Medium-High risk: must be distinguished from ritual/oracular “knowledge” claimed via a doudini’s trance-mediated insight; this is relational knowledge of a person, gained through faith and ongoing discipleship, not esoteric revelation received in an altered state. |
| δύναμις τῆς ἀναστάσεως | dynamis tes anastaseos | ”power of his resurrection” | the transformative power flowing from Christ’s resurrection | power of his resurrection | The resurrection is not only a past event but a present transforming power at work in believers (3:10). | Reuse baseline ईश्वरनि सक्ति (power of God, High) + जिउनाय सोलायनाय (resurrection, Critical). Critical risk, inherited in full: must be kept categorically distinct from देउनि सक्ति (spirit-power manifested through doudini trance, forbidden per baseline). |
| κοινωνία παθημάτων | koinonia pathematon | ”fellowship/participation in [his] sufferings” | shared participation in Christ’s own sufferings | fellowship of his sufferings / sharing in his sufferings | Believers are called to participate in Christ’s sufferings as part of knowing him (3:10). | Reuse baseline गोसो जोंथानाय + new दुख (dukho, “suffering”). High risk: central to “Joy in Suffering” doctrine — must be taught as purposeful participation in Christ’s redemptive pattern, not fatalistic misfortune. |
| συμμορφίζομαι | symmorphizomai | ”to be conformed to, take the same form as” | to be shaped into conformity with another’s form | becoming like him / being conformed to his death | Believers are progressively conformed to the pattern of Christ’s death (and by extension resurrection life) (3:10). | New; shares the μορφή root of the core-passage hymn. Provisional: मसीहनि गुदिजों सोमान सोलायनाय (Mosihni gudijwng soman solainai). High risk: must not imply a cyclical process resembling rebirth (फिन जोनोम, forbidden per baseline); this is a once-begun, ongoing sanctifying conformity to Christ, not repeated cycles. |
| διώκω | dioko | ”to pursue, press on, chase” | to run after with effort and intent | press on / pursue | Paul’s determined, effortful pursuit of the resurrection goal (3:12, 3:14) — key verb for “Pressing on toward the Goal.” | New. Provisional: फिदोमनाय (phidomnai, “chasing/pursuing”). Medium-High risk: must be framed as pursuit of Christ himself and the goal he has already secured (3:12b, “because Christ Jesus has made me his own”), not a self-powered achievement project — guard against assimilation into Brahma Dharma’s merit-accumulation framework. |
| καταλαμβάνω | katalambano | ”to lay hold of, grasp, attain” | to seize, obtain, comprehend | lay hold of / attain / take hold of | Paul has not yet “laid hold” of the final goal, but presses on because Christ has laid hold of him (3:12-13). | New. Provisional: लाबोनाय (labwnai, “to take/obtain”). Medium risk; note the deliberate lexical echo with ἁρπαγμός (2:6, “grasping”) — Paul reverses the direction: Christ grasped Paul, not vice versa; a rich teaching point for the “Pressing on” doctrine. |
| ἐπιλανθάνομαι / ἐπεκτείνομαι | epilanthanomai / epekteinomai | ”to forget / to stretch forward, strain toward” | deliberate forgetting of the past; athletic straining toward a goal | forgetting what lies behind / straining forward | Paul’s athletic-race imagery for single-minded pursuit of Christ (3:13). | New. Provisional: सोर सोलाय हराव मुंख्रिनाय simplify: सिगाङनि जिनिस मुंख्रिनाय (sigangni jinis mungkhrinai, “forgetting what is behind”) and सामनाव गोख्रोमनाय (samnao gokhromnai, “stretching forward”). Low-Medium risk. |
| σκοπός | skopos | ”mark, goal” | the target aimed at (athletic/archery imagery) | goal / mark | The single goal of Paul’s pursuit: the prize found in Christ (3:14). | New; related to σκοπέω (2:4). Provisional: लक्ष्य (lokkhyo, Sanskrit/Hindi loan “goal/target”). Medium risk: could carry Brahma Dharma’s self-improvement/goal-attainment resonance; must be explicitly Christ-ward, not a generic self-help target. |
| βραβεῖον | brabeion | ”prize” | an athletic victory prize | prize | The prize awaiting at the goal — resurrection life fully realized in Christ (3:14). | New. Provisional: जितानाय दान (jitanai daan, “prize of victory”). Low-Medium risk. |
| κλῆσις (ἄνω) | ano klesis | ”the upward call” | God’s summons, here directed heavenward | the upward call [of God] | The heavenward direction of God’s call in Christ (3:14). | Reuse baseline exactly: फिनायनि सिम (calling, High risk). No new term needed. |
| τέλειος | teleios | ”mature, complete, perfect” | full maturity, completeness (not sinless perfection) | mature / perfect / complete | Those “mature” in faith are urged to adopt this same forward-pressing mindset (3:15). | New. Provisional: पूर्ण (purna, Sanskrit loan “complete”). Medium risk: must not be read through Brahma Dharma’s merit-completion framework as an achieved state of moral perfection; this is relational maturity — a settled, Christ-ward orientation, not flawless attainment. |
| πολίτευμα | politeuma | ”citizenship, commonwealth” | the political/civic community to which one belongs; one’s homeland-identity | citizenship / commonwealth | ”Our citizenship is in heaven” (3:20) — believers’ primary civic identity and allegiance belong to heaven, not to any earthly polity. Central term for “Citizenship in Heaven.” | New. Provisional: स्वर्गनि नागरिकता (sorgoni nagorikota, नागरिकता = established loan “citizenship”). High risk: given the Bodoland Territorial Region’s strong contemporary association of Bodo ethnic identity with territorial-political belonging (as already flagged for “kingdom of God” in the baseline), this doctrine requires explicit teaching that heavenly citizenship transcends — without erasing — any earthly ethnic or territorial identity, and must not be politicized in either direction. Flag for theologian and native-speaker review together. |
| σωτήρ | soter | ”Savior” | one who rescues/delivers | Savior | Christ is awaited from heaven as Savior, who will complete believers’ transformation (3:20). | New; built directly on baseline फोरायनाय (salvation, Critical). Provisional: फोरायग्रा (phoraygra, “one who rescues,” agentive form). Critical risk: must be taught alongside “salvation” as a from-the-ground-up concept, since — as the baseline notes — Bathou tradition has no developed eschatological rescuer-figure and Brahma Dharma’s मोक्ष-liberation framework must never be imported. |
| μετασχηματίζω | metaschematizo | ”to transform, change the outward form” | to refashion, transform in outward form | transform / transfigure | Christ will transform believers’ “lowly body” into conformity with his “glorious body” (3:21) — shares the σχῆμα root of 2:7. | New. Provisional: सोलायनाय reused with qualifier: गुदिखौ सोलायनाय (gudikhw solainai, “transforming the body”). Critical risk: must be taught as bodily, future, once-for-all transformation at Christ’s return — not a cyclical rebirth (फिन जोनोम, forbidden) and not a this-life ritual transformation. |
| σῶμα τῆς δόξης / ταπείνωσις | soma tes doxes / tapeinosis | ”body of glory / [body of] lowliness” | the resurrected, glorified body vs. the present humble/mortal body | glorious body / lowly body | The contrast between the believer’s present mortal body and the future resurrection body, conformed to Christ’s own glorified body (3:21). | Reuse baseline महिमा (glory) + new गुदि (gudi, “body”) → महिमानि गुदि; तापेइनोसिस reuses गोहोम root → गोहोमनि गुदि. Critical risk, inherited from resurrection/glory baseline entries. |
| ἐχθροὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ / ἡ κοιλία | echthroi tou staurou / he koilia | ”enemies of the cross / the belly” | those whose lives oppose the meaning of the cross; appetite/self-indulgence exalted as ultimate value | enemies of the cross / whose god is their belly | A warning against those who live for self-indulgent appetite rather than the cross’s pattern of self-giving (3:18-19) — a direct foil to the kenosis hymn’s ethic. | New. Provisional: क्रुसनि रोखागारि (krusni rokhagari, “enemies of the cross”) and बोखोरखौ ईश्वर महर मानोनाय (bokhorkhw Isor mohor manonai, “regarding the belly as god”). Medium risk. |
Philippians 4
Chapter 4 concentrates the letter’s vocabulary of joy, peace, contentment, and partnership, closing the doctrinal arc begun in chapters 1-3.
| Greek | Translit. | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Bodo Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| στήκετε | stekete | ”stand firm” | to stand, remain steadfast | stand firm | An exhortation to steadfastness in the Lord amid the letter’s various appeals (4:1). | New. Provisional: गोरजि थानाय (gworji thanai, “standing firm”). Low risk. |
| τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν | to auto phronein | ”to think the same thing” | shared mindset, agreement | to be of the same mind | The specific appeal to Euodia and Syntyche to resolve conflict, reusing the letter’s key φρονέω vocabulary (4:2). | Reuse गोसो-मन थानाय (from 2:2). High risk, inherited. |
| σύζυγος | syzygos | ”yokefellow” | a companion who shares a “yoke” of labor; possibly also a proper name | yokefellow / companion / (possibly a proper name, “Syzygus”) | An unidentified co-worker addressed by Paul (4:3). | New. Provisional: साथीयारि (sathiyari, “companion,” Hindi/Assamese loan साथी + agentive). Low risk; note textual ambiguity (possible proper name) for translator. |
| βίβλος ζωῆς | biblos zoes | ”book of life” | the register of those who belong to God eternally | book of life | An eschatological image of secure, permanent membership among God’s people (4:3). | New. Reuse baseline resurrection-family root जिउ (life) + loan किताब (kitab, “book”) → जिउनि किताब. Medium risk (eschatological register requiring background teaching). |
| χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ πάντοτε | chairete en kyrio pantote | ”rejoice in the Lord always” | a repeated, deliberate imperative to constant joy grounded in the Lord | rejoice in the Lord always | The letter’s signature command, repeated for emphasis (4:4) — joy as a settled, commanded disposition, not a feeling contingent on circumstance. | Reuse आनन्द लानाय (from 2:2) + baseline प्रभु (Lord). Medium-High risk: central to “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment” doctrine — must be taught as joy commanded and possible in the Lord regardless of circumstance, sharply distinguished from festival-occasion joy tied to a successful Kherai puja or Mainao-blessed harvest. |
| ἐπιεικής | epieikes | ”gentle, reasonable, forbearing” | yielding, gentle, considerate | gentleness / graciousness / forbearance | The gentle, non-contentious spirit believers are to display publicly (4:5). | New. Provisional: नोमोर मन (nomor mon, “gentle/soft mind”). Low risk. |
| ὁ κύριος ἐγγύς | ho kyrios engys | ”the Lord is near” | either Christ’s imminent return, or his present nearness (deliberately ambiguous in Greek) | the Lord is at hand / the Lord is near | Grounds for the gentleness and freedom from anxiety just commanded (4:5). | Reuse baseline प्रभु. Medium risk: preserve the deliberate double sense (temporal nearness of return / relational nearness of presence) in translator notes rather than forcing a single reading. |
| μεριμνάω | merimnao | ”to be anxious, worry” | anxious care, worry | be anxious / worry | The command not to be anxious, paired with the alternative of prayer (4:6). | New. Provisional: फिक्रो खालामनाय (phikro khalamnai, “to worry,” फिक्रो = widespread South Asian loanword). Low-Medium risk. |
| προσευχὴ καὶ δέησις | proseuche kai deesis | ”prayer and petition/supplication” | general prayer and specific, urgent request | prayer and petition / prayer and supplication | The positive alternative to anxiety: bringing every need to God in prayer (4:6). | New. Reuse baseline intercession-root बिनयनाय + new मिनतिनाय (minotinai, “petition/plea”) → बिनयनाय आरो मिनतिनाय. Medium risk. |
| εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ ὑπερέχουσα πάντα νοῦν | eirene tou theou he hyperechousa panta noun | ”the peace of God which surpasses all understanding/mind” | a peace beyond ordinary comprehension, guarding heart and mind | the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding | God’s peace as a guarding, transcendent gift given in response to prayer, not the product of circumstance-management (4:7). | Reuse baseline सान्ति (peace, Medium) + reuse ὑπερέχω-root गोजौ मानोनाय from 2:3 → ईश्वरनि सान्ति, जायखौ मनसियाव पूरां बुझिबो हैया (“God’s peace, which the mind cannot fully understand”). Medium-High risk: must not collapse into psychological calm achievable by one’s own effort (per the baseline’s existing caution on सान्ति), and must be distinguished from the household harmony and protection from misfortune traditionally sought through Bathou/Kherai offerings. |
| φρουρέω | phroureo | ”to guard, keep watch over” | military imagery: guarding a fortified position | guard / keep watch over | God’s peace actively guards the believer’s heart and mind (4:7). | New. Provisional: रैखाथि होनाय (raikhathi honai, “to give protection/guarding” — NB the baseline explicitly forbids रैखाथि as a stand-alone gloss for eternal salvation, but its ordinary sense of “protection/guarding” is appropriate and distinct here for this specific verb). Medium risk — flag for review: ensure this usage of रैखाथि is not confused with, or mistaken for, the forbidden salvation-gloss usage; a clarifying translator note is required each time this word is used. |
| λογίζομαι (+ virtue list) | logizomai | ”to consider, think on, reckon” | to dwell on, deliberately turn one’s mind to | think on / consider / dwell on | The command to deliberately fix the mind on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable (4:8). | New. Provisional: मनथियाव सोमजिनाय (monthiyao somjinai, “consider in the mind”). Low risk. |
| αὐτάρκης | autarkes | ”self-sufficient, content” | contentment, satisfaction independent of external circumstance | content / self-sufficient | ”I have learned to be content” — contentment that does not depend on abundance or lack (4:11). Central term for “Contentment in All Circumstances.” | New. Provisional: सन्तुष्टि (suntusti, Sanskrit/Hindi loan “contentment/satisfaction”). High risk: must be distinguished from two live alternatives — (1) Brahma Dharma’s ascetic detachment/renunciation ethic, in which contentment is achieved through disciplined withdrawal from desire, and (2) a fatalistic, resigned acceptance of circumstance (भागी-style fate-acceptance, already flagged Critical-adjacent for providence/election in the baseline). Paul’s contentment is actively Christ-sourced (4:13), not self-achieved detachment or passive resignation. |
| μεμύημαι (μυέω) | memyemai (myeo) | “I have been initiated, let in on the secret” | a technical term from Greco-Roman mystery religions, meaning formal ritual initiation into hidden knowledge | I have learned the secret of / I have learned | Paul co-opts mystery-religion vocabulary metaphorically to describe his learned capacity to face both plenty and hunger (4:12). | New — flag for careful handling. Do NOT render with any term suggestive of ritual/esoteric initiation. Provisional plain rendering: सिखिनाय (sikhinai, “having learned”). High risk: the literal Greek carries a mystery-cult “initiation” sense that, if rendered with any Bodo term evoking ritual initiation, would resonate dangerously with a doudini’s ritual training/initiation into Kherai trance practice. The Bodo rendering must strip this resonance entirely and convey only “coming to understand through experience,” never “being let into a secret rite.” |
| ἐνδυναμόω | endynamoo | ”to strengthen, empower” | to fill with power/strength | strengthen / empower | ”I can do all things through him who strengthens me” — Christ as the source of Paul’s contentment and endurance (4:13). | New; shares the σκτι root of baseline “power of God.” Provisional: मसीहजों सक्ति मोननाय (Mosihjwng sakti monnai, “receiving/having strength through/with Christ”). High risk: must be kept categorically distinct from देउनि सक्ति (spirit-power manifested through a doudini’s Kherai trance, forbidden per baseline power-of-God entry) — this is ongoing relational empowerment from Christ, not a ritual/mediumistic power transfer. |
| συγκοινωνέω | sygkoinoneo | ”to share together with, participate jointly” | joint participation, shared partnership | share with / participate together in | The Philippians’ shared participation in Paul’s troubles through material support (4:14). | Reuse गोसो जोंथानाय family. Medium-High risk, inherited from “Partnership in the Gospel” doctrine notes. |
| δόσις καὶ λῆμψις | dosis kai lempsis | ”giving and receiving” | mutual exchange of material support | giving and receiving | The Philippians’ concrete financial partnership with Paul’s ministry, described in commercial-sounding but relationally-intended terms (4:15). | New. Provisional: होनाय आरो मोननाय (honai aro monnai, “giving and receiving”). Medium-High risk: though commercial vocabulary is used, this must not be taught as a reciprocal ritual-exchange logic (do-ut-des) of the kind already flagged for “grace” in the baseline — this is generous, gospel-motivated partnership, not payment for services or offerings for expected favor. |
| ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας, θυσία δεκτή, εὐάρεστος τῷ θεῷ | osme euodias, thysia dekte, euarestos to theo | ”a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God” | cultic sacrificial language applied metaphorically to the Philippians’ gift | a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God | The Philippians’ financial gift to Paul is described in the vocabulary of temple sacrifice (4:18). | New. Reuse बलि (boli, “sacrifice/offering,” from σπένδομαι note above). High risk: this cultic metaphor must be explicitly taught as figurative — a financial gift described as a pleasing offering to God — and sharply distinguished from literal offerings made at a Bathou courtyard shrine or during Kherai puja. |
| πληρόω | pleroo | ”to fill, fulfill, supply fully” | to fill completely, to meet a need fully | supply / fulfill / fill | ”My God will supply every need of yours” — God’s promised, abundant provision (4:19). | New. Provisional: जोगार होनाय (jogar honai, “to provide/supply,” जोगार = established loanword “arrangement/provision”). Low-Medium risk. |
| πλοῦτος | ploutos | ”riches, wealth” | abundance, wealth (here, God’s own limitless resource) | riches / wealth | The lavish scale of God’s provision, “according to his riches in glory” (4:19). | New. Provisional: सोमाज no — use धन (dhon, Sanskrit/Assamese loan “wealth/riches”). Medium risk: must not be conflated with Mainao, the Kherai pantheon’s goddess of wealth and rice, invoked for material prosperity in traditional practice; God’s “riches in glory” here describes his own inexhaustible resource given through Christ, not a prosperity-deity’s blessing to be ritually secured. |
Summary of Cross-Chapter Theological Threads
- Incarnation and Self-Emptying (Kenosis): concentrated entirely in 2:6-8, the single highest-risk cluster in the book; requires ground-up teaching distinguishing voluntary divine self-limitation from Kherai trance-possession’s involuntary filling of a human medium.
- Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment: threads through 1:4-26 (chains reframed as gospel advance), 2:17-18 (joy amid possible martyrdom), 3:10 (fellowship of sufferings), and 4:4-13 (rejoice always; contentment).
- Unity and Humility in the Church: concentrated in 2:1-5 (φρονέω, ταπεινοφροσύνη) and reactivated in 4:2-3.
- Righteousness by Faith versus the Law: concentrated in 3:2-9, directly reusing the baseline’s Romans-critical terms धार्मिकता/बिश्वास/बिथान.
- Contentment in All Circumstances: concentrated in 4:11-13, requiring careful differentiation from both Brahma Dharma detachment ethics and fatalistic resignation.
- Citizenship in Heaven: 1:27 and 3:20, a High-risk doctrine given the Bodoland Territorial Region’s contemporary ethnic-territorial politics.
- Partnership in the Gospel: 1:5, 4:14-18, extending the baseline’s fellowship term into a material-partnership dimension that must resist reciprocal-exchange framing.
