Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 John (Koine Greek)

Scope Note

2 John is a single-chapter letter of 13 verses. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, this document analyzes every verse of the entire book, not only the core passage. The core passage (1:4-11) receives verse-by-verse treatment first, since it is the theological anchor for the curriculum’s four doctrines (Walking in Truth and Love; Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ). The remainder of the book — the salutation (1:1-3) and the closing (1:12-13) — is then analyzed as the book’s only other “chapter section,” since 2 John has no additional chapters. Where a term already carries an established rendering in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json), that rendering is reused exactly, per the hard rule governing this study.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: 2 John 1:4-11 (Verse-by-Verse)

Verse 4

“I rejoiced greatly that I found some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.”

Verse 5

“And now I ask you, lady, not as though writing a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.”

ἐρωτῶ (erōtō), from ἐρωτάω (erōtaō)“I ask/request”Request among equals or a superior gently urging; distinct from αἰτέω (petition to a superior)I ask, I request, I urgePastoral appeal, not a coercive command — sets tone for the whole passageबिनयनाय (binoinai) — reuse baseline “intercession” root (request/entreaty sense)Low
κυρία (kyria)“lady, mistress”Feminine honorific address; shares root with κύριος (lord/master) but here a term of respect for a woman, not a divine titlelady, madam, dear ladyAddressee of the letter (possibly a literal woman or a personification of a local church); must never be confused with the exclusive Lordship title reserved for Christआदरनि बिमा (adworni bima, “honored lady”)High
ἐντολὴν καινήν (entolēn kainēn)“new commandment”καινός = new/fresh (in kind, not merely recent); contrasted with the settled apostolic traditionnew commandmentJohn clarifies he is not innovating; this guards against reading the love-command as a novel teaching that supersedes what was “heard from the beginning”हुकुम गोदान (hukum godan, “new commandment”) — गोदान = newMedium

Verse 6

“And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, just as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”

Verse 7

“For many deceivers have gone out into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ coming in flesh; this is the deceiver and the antichrist.”

This verse is the theological center of the “Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation” doctrine.

ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί (erchomenon en sarki), σάρξ (sarx)“coming in flesh”σάρξ = physical human body/nature; ἐρχόμενον (present participle) frames Christ’s incarnation as an accomplished, ongoing reality to be confessedcoming/having come in the fleshThis is the incarnation doctrine itself, stated as the confession that distinguishes true faith from the deceivers’ teaching. Must connect to the baseline’s “incarnation” term (मानसि गुदि सोलायनाय), using the same body/flesh root (गुदि).गुदिजों फैनाय (gudijong phoinai, “having come in the body/flesh”) — गुदि reused from baseline incarnation compoundCritical
ὁ πλάνος καὶ ὁ ἀντίχριστος (ho planos kai ho antichristos)“the deceiver and the antichrist”ἀντίχριστος: ἀντί (“against, in place of”) + Χριστός; a specific eschatological/ecclesial category of opponent to Christ’s person and teaching, not a generic term for “enemy”the deceiver and the antichristDenial of the incarnation is identified as the defining mark of antichrist activity, active already in the churches John writes toमसीह-बिरोधी (Mosih-birodhi, “opponent of Christ”)Critical

Verse 8

“Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we worked for, but that you receive a full reward.”

μισθὸν πλήρη (misthon plērē), μισθός (misthos)“full reward/wage”A payment due for labor; in eschatological contexts, God’s reward for faithful perseverancefull reward, complete wage/recompenseCollision risk: “reward for works” language is easily reheard through the karma-phal (कर्मफल, “fruit of one’s deeds”) framework absorbed into Bodo religious discourse via Brahma Dharma’s merit-based ethic. Must be taught as an eschatological gift for perseverance in grace-given truth, not a self-earned merit payout.पूरा फल (pura phal, “full reward/fruit”)High
ἀπολάβητε (apolabēte), ἀπολαμβάνω (apolambanō)“you might receive”Receiving in full what is duereceive, obtainReceiving the reward in fullness, contrasted with losing it in partमोनानाय (monanai, “to receive/obtain”)Low

Verse 9

“Everyone who goes ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”

This verse anchors the “Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ” doctrine.

Term (Greek/Translit)Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBodo RenderingRisk
προάγων (proagōn), προάγω (proagō)“going ahead, going beyond”To advance further, to progress past a fixed pointgoes ahead, goes beyond, runs on ahead, transgresses (variant reading)Describes a false teacher’s claim to advance beyond the received apostolic teaching into novel doctrine. Collision risk: this “progress beyond” self-understanding closely parallels Brahma Dharma’s own 1912 self-description as a reform/progress movement beyond traditional Bodo religion. Must be taught explicitly that “going beyond Christ’s teaching” is doctrinal departure, not legitimate spiritual progress.आगु सोलायनाय (agu solainai, “going/moving ahead beyond”)High
μὴ μένων (mē menōn), μένω (menō)“not abiding/remaining”Continuing settled presence/residence in a place, teaching, or relationshipnot abiding, not remaining, not continuing inThe negative counterpart of perseverance — departure from settled abiding in apostolic teachingथाथावनाय (thathabnai, “not remaining/abiding”) — from थानाय (thanai, “to remain/abide”)High
διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ (didachē tou Christou), διδαχή (didachē)“the teaching of Christ”The body of authoritative instruction originating from and about Christteaching, doctrine, instructionCollision risk: Bodo has no settled devotional-register word for “doctrine” independent of Brahma Dharma’s own reform literature, which also uses उपदेश-type vocabulary for its codified teaching. Must be explicitly anchored to Christ as the sole source and content, distinguished from any other community’s “updesh.” (Mosihni updesh)High
θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει (theon ouk echei), ἔχω (echō)“does not have God”Ongoing possession/relationship, not one-time acquisitiondoes not have God, is without GodCollision risk: In Bathou tradition, Bathoubwrai’s presence is physically located/represented via the sijou plant in the household courtyard — “having God” could be misheard as a claim about lacking a physical ritual object rather than lacking relational, doctrinal fellowship with the true God. Must be taught as a statement about relationship through right confession, not about ritual object-possession. (Isorkhou monanai, “to have/possess God” — negated: मोनो / does not have)High
τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν (ton patera kai ton huion)“the Father and the Son”God as Father; Christ as the (divine) Sonthe Father and the SonReuses baseline Critical terms for Father and Son of God — abiding in Christ’s teaching entails possessing both Persons in relationshipआफा आरो गोरा (afa aro gwra) — baseline terms, reused: आफा = Father; ईश्वरनि गोरा = Son (of God)Critical

Verse 10

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house and do not say to him, ‘Greetings.’”

This verse anchors the “Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment” doctrine.

ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει (tautēn tēn didachēn ou pherei)“does not bring this teaching”φέρω = to carry/bring; here, to bring as one’s message/contentdoes not bring this teaching, does not teach thisThe test for hospitality is specifically doctrinal content about Christ (v.7, 9), not general demeanor or needबे उपदेशखौ फैनो नागोन (be updeshkhou phoino nagon, “does not bring this teaching”)High
μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν (mē lambanete auton eis oikian)“do not receive him into the house”λαμβάνω = to take/receive; οἰκία = household, the physical home which in the early church also functioned as house-church meeting spacedo not receive/welcome him into your house, do not host himCollision risk: hospitality is an exceptionally strong social value in Bodo village culture; this command must be taught as a narrow, doctrinally-specific exception (denying formal endorsement/platform to an itinerant false teacher of a specific denial), not a general license for inhospitality or a rejection of ordinary guest-welcomeनोआव लानाय (noao lanai, “to receive/take into the house”) — negated formHigh
χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε (chairein autō mē legete), χαίρειν (chairein, infinitive of χαίρω)“do not say to him, ‘Rejoice/Greetings‘“χαίρειν used as a fixed epistolary/oral greeting formula (“Hail,” “God speed,” equivalent to a blessing of welcome)do not wish him well, do not greet him, do not say “God speed”Withholding even the customary verbal greeting-blessing signals refusal to formally endorse the teacher; reuses सान्ति (peace) as the natural Bodo greeting-blessing term being withheldसान्ति होनाय मोनोसे (santi honai monose, “do not give/wish peace [as greeting]”) — सान्ति reused from baselineHigh

PART 2 — REMAINDER OF THE BOOK (2 John 1:1-3, 1:12-13)

2 John has only one chapter. Having covered the core passage (vv.4-11) above, this section completes full-book coverage by treating the salutation (vv.1-3) and closing (vv.12-13) — the only remaining verses in the letter.

Verses 1-3 — Salutation

ὁ πρεσβύτερος (ho presbyteros)“the elder”An older man; by NT usage, an authoritative church office/leadership title, also the author’s self-designationthe elder, the presbyterAuthor’s self-identification as a recognized apostolic-era church leader. Collision risk: the honorific elder-titles बर’ऐ/बुरहा are reserved in the baseline for Bathoubwrai and Kherai-pantheon elder-deities and are explicitly forbidden for Christ; using any बुर-root title for this human church-leadership office risks importing the same animist elder-deity register onto a human author, implying quasi-divine status rather than a functional ministry office.मण्डलीनि आगोमोन (mwndolini agomon, “senior/leading one of the church”)High
ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ (eklektē kyria), ἐκλεκτός (eklektos)“to (the) elect/chosen lady”Divinely chosen status; shares the same root as baseline “election” (ἐκλογή)to the elect lady, to the chosen ladyIdentifies the addressee (person or church) as one of God’s chosen — reuses the doctrinal concept of election from the baseline, applied here to an individual/congregation rather than corporately to Israel/the church in Romansसायखजाबाय आदरनि बिमा (saikhojabai adworni bima, “chosen honored lady”) — सायख reused from baseline “ईश्वरनि सायख” rootMedium
οἱ ἐγνωκότες τὴν ἀλήθειαν (hoi egnōkotes tēn alētheian), γινώσκω (ginōskō)“those who have come to know the truth”Perfect participle: a settled, present state of knowledge resulting from a past coming-to-knowthose who know the truth, those who have known the truthThe whole believing community, not John alone, shares this settled knowledge — truth is communal apostolic teaching, not private insight (contra the deceivers of v.7)सत्यखौ मोनसे मानोनाय मानुष (shotyokhou monse manwnnai manwsw)Medium
τὴν ἀλήθειαν τὴν μένουσαν ἐν ἡμῖν (tēn alētheian tēn menousan en hēmin)“the truth abiding in us”μένουσαν (present participle of μένω) — truth as an indwelling, continuing presencethe truth that abides/dwells in usIntroduces μένω (“abide”) in connection with truth even before it appears in connection with “teaching” (v.9) — establishes the perseverance theme from the outsetसत्य थानाय (shotyo thanai, “truth abiding/remaining”) — थानाय reused from v.9 termHigh
εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα (eis ton aiōna), αἰών (aiōn)“forever, into the age”Unending duration; eschatological permanenceforever, eternally, for everTruth’s indwelling is not temporary but permanent — contrasts sharply with the transience of the deceivers “going out” (v.7)हमेशा (hamesha, “forever/always”)Low
χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη (charis, eleos, eirēnē)“grace, mercy, peace”A triadic blessing formulagrace, mercy, and peaceχάρις and εἰρήνη reuse baseline Critical/Medium terms exactly. ἔλεος (“mercy”) is new: God’s compassionate favor toward those in need/distress, closely related to but distinct from grace’s unmerited-gift emphasis. Collision risk: mercy-language can be absorbed into a bhakti-style framework of a deity’s compassion won through devotional practice; must be taught within the same apart-from-merit framework as grace.मोफादांनाय दान (grace, reused), दाया (daya, mercy — new), सान्ति (peace, reused)Critical (grace, peace reused) / Medium (mercy, new)
παρὰ θεοῦ πατρός…παρὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός”from God the Father…from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father”Dual divine source of the blessingfrom God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the FatherReuses baseline Critical terms for God, Father, Jesus, Christ, and Son — establishes shared divine source of grace/mercy/peace between Father and Son, an early implicit affirmation of Christ’s deity relevant to the incarnation-denial warning later in the letterईश्वर आफा…जिसु मसीह, आफानि गोरा — all baseline terms, reused exactlyCritical

Verses 12-13 — Closing
