Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — Philemon (English → Bodo)

Purpose and Scope

This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the Philemon curriculum, covering every verse of the book’s single chapter (vv.1-25) in three natural sections: the salutation (vv.1-3), the thanksgiving/commendation (vv.4-7), the core appeal (vv.8-21), and the closing greetings/benediction (vv.22-25). Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, every section is reviewed explicitly below, even where a section contributes no new doctrine beyond terms already governed by the Romans baseline Language Package. This matrix is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (Philemon version, generated 2026-07-09): same seven doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing.

Section-by-Section Coverage

VersesContentDoctrines Active (New to Philemon)Baseline Terms RecurringCoverage Note
v.1aPaul’s self-identification as “prisoner of Christ Jesus”Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another; Gospel Suffering as Ministrymessiah/christ, jesusOpens the letter’s central rhetorical strategy — appeal, not command, from a voluntarily-suffering apostle.
v.1b”Timothy our brother… to Philemon our beloved fellow worker”Christian Brotherhood across Social StatusFirst occurrence of ἀδελφός; establishes brotherhood as the letter’s controlling relational category.
v.2”Apphia our sister, Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house”Household Church and Hospitality; Christian Brotherhood (sister)church (मण्डली)Names three human addressees and the house-church; no new doctrine beyond household-church, reviewed here.
v.3”Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”(Baseline recurrence only)grace, peace, god, father, lord, jesus, messiah/christStandard Pauline salutation; entirely baseline vocabulary — reviewed, no new doctrinal content.
vv.4-5Thanksgiving; “hearing of your love and faith”Grace-Motivated Obedience (background); Christian Brotherhood (background)thanksgiving, faith, lord, saintsIntroduces love (ἀγάπη) as a new standalone term paired with baseline faith; sets up vv.8-9’s appeal grounded in love.
v.6”that the fellowship of your faith may become effective…”(Baseline recurrence + supporting term)faith, fellowshipSupporting term “full knowledge” (ἐπίγνωσις) introduced; no new doctrine tier beyond Christian Brotherhood/Grace-Motivated Obedience already covered.
v.7”you have refreshed the hearts of the saints… my brother”Forgiveness and Reconciliation (background, ἀναπαύω); Christian Brotherhoodsaints, joyFirst occurrence of σπλάγχνα (heart/inward affection) and ἀναπαύω (refresh); anticipates vv.12, 20.
v.8”though I could command… I would rather appeal”Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another; Grace-Motivated ObedienceIntroduces the appeal-vs-command contrast (παρρησία/ἐπιτάσσω) that structures the whole core passage.
v.9”for love’s sake I prefer to appeal… prisoner of Christ Jesus”Intercession and Appeal; Gospel Suffering as Ministryexhort/binoinai, jesus, messiah/christPaul grounds his appeal explicitly in love, not authority.
v.10”I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment”Spiritual Fatherhood in the Gospel; Intercession and Appealexhort/binoinaiCORE PASSAGE begins; τέκνον/ἐγέννησα introduces spiritual fatherhood, the book’s most culturally novel category.
v.11”formerly useless to you, but now useful”Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power (wordplay)ἄχρηστος/εὔχρηστος wordplay on Onesimus’s name; requires translator note per Core Glossary note 3.
v.12”I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart”Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Spiritual Fatherhoodσπλάγχνα recurs; Paul identifies himself personally with Onesimus.
v.13”whom I wanted to keep… that he might serve me on your behalf”Gospel Suffering as Ministry; Intercession and Appealgospel/mangal khaborBonds/δεσμός vocabulary; elevates Onesimus’s help to church “service.”
v.14”not without your consent… not by compulsion but of your own accord”Grace-Motivated Obedience (doctrinal center)CRITICAL hinge verse: ἑκούσιον vs ἀνάγκη; direct structural parallel to the baseline’s grace-vs-merit distinction.
v.15”perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a while”Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power; (providence, contrast term only)providence (contrast)ἐχωρίσθη contrasted with baseline’s ईश्वरनि सामलानाय; must not collapse into impersonal fate.
v.16”no longer as a slave but… a beloved brother”Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power; Christian Brotherhood across Social StatuslordTHE Critical-risk verse of the book: δοῦλος/दास directly confronted by ἀδελφός/भाई.
v.17”if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me”Forgiveness and Reconciliationκοινωνόν and προσλαμβάνω; the doctrine’s practical, visible test case.
v.18”if he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge that to my account”Forgiveness and Reconciliationἀδικέω, ὀφείλω, and ἐλλογάω; typological parallel to imputed righteousness (Critical baseline term), taught as illustration only.
v.19”I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it… you owe me even your own self”Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Grace-Motivated Obedienceἀποτίνω and προσοφείλω shift from literal to spiritual debt.
v.20”let me benefit from you… refresh my heart in Christ”Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Christian Brotherhoodlord, messiah/christὀναίμην wordplay on Onesimus’s name recurs; requires translator note.
v.21”confident of your obedience, I know you will do even more than I say”Grace-Motivated Obedienceὑπακοή (plain obedience) explicitly distinguished from baseline’s बिश्वासनि मानोन (obedience of faith).
v.22”prepare a guest room for me… hoping to be granted to you”Household Church and Hospitality; Grace-Motivated Obedience (echo)χαρίζομαι passive echoes the letter’s grace-theme; ξενία (lodging) is low-risk supporting vocabulary.
v.23”Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings”Intercession and Appeal; Gospel Suffering as Ministryjesus, messiah/christσυναιχμάλωτος confirms Paul’s gospel-suffering is shared, not solitary — reviewed, no new doctrine tier.
v.24”as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers”Christian Brotherhood across Social Status (low-risk closing)συνεργός; standard ministry-partnership vocabulary, reviewed, minimal risk.
v.25”The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit”(Baseline recurrence only)grace, lord, jesus, messiah/christπνεῦμα ὑμῶν = human spirit, NOT Holy Spirit; bare आत्था is correct here per Core Glossary note 2 — reviewed explicitly to prevent over-eager “correction” to पबित्र आत्था.

Coverage confirmation: All 25 verses of Philemon have been reviewed above. No verse range is silently omitted. Verses contributing no new doctrine beyond the Romans baseline (v.3, v.6 core, vv.23-24, v.25) are explicitly marked “reviewed” rather than left unaddressed.

Bodo social history includes bonded/household-labor arrangements and clan-hierarchy relationships; Brahma Dharma’s Sanskritized reform ethic could cause दास to be heard as a fixed, quasi-religious social rank tied to duty/karma rather than a social-legal status the gospel relativizes through brotherhood. The doctrine must never be flattened into either “slavery doesn’t matter” or “Paul commands Philemon to free him” — neither is stated in the text.Human theologian

Doctrines Recurring from the Romans Baseline (Not Re-Analyzed as New)

The following baseline doctrines/terms recur in Philemon but are governed entirely by the existing Romans Language Package and require no new risk-tier assignment. They are noted here for completeness of full-book coverage:

  • Grace (Critical, vv.3, 25; conceptually vv.14, 22) — reuses baseline मोफादांनाय दान exactly.
  • Peace (Medium, v.3; conceptually v.20) — reuses baseline सान्ति exactly.
  • Faith (High, vv.5-6) — reuses baseline बिश्वास exactly; object of faith remains Christ.
  • Saints (High, vv.5, 7) — reuses baseline पबित्र मानुष exactly; corporate sense retained, not narrowed to an elite.
  • Church (Medium, v.2) — reuses baseline मण्डली exactly; see Household Church and Hospitality above for the household-specific extension.
  • Gospel (High, v.13) — reuses baseline मंगल खबर exactly.
  • Lord / Jesus / Christ (Critical throughout) — reuse baseline प्रभु / जिसु / मसीह exactly; Christ’s exclusive Lordship is presumed background to the whole letter’s ethic, not re-argued.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power

Bodo name: दासत्व आरो मंगल खबरनि सोलायनाय सक्ति
Key terms: slave, bondservant, useless, useful, no longer as a slave
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: δοῦλος/दास is the book’s single highest-risk term. Bodo social history includes its own forms of bonded/household labor and clan-hierarchy relationships, and Assam-region caste-adjacent framing introduced via Brahma Dharma’s Sanskritized reform ethic could cause दास to be heard as a fixed, quasi-religious social rank rather than a legal-social status the gospel relativizes. The doctrine must be taught with precision: Paul does not command manumission outright, yet insists the relationship is now fundamentally brotherhood. This nuance must never be flattened into either ‘slavery doesn’t matter’ or ‘Paul commands Philemon to free him,’ neither of which the text states outright.

Grace-Motivated Obedience

Bodo name: मोफादांनाय दानजों जायगोन मानोन
Key terms: not by compulsion but of your own accord, voluntary, confident of your obedience, not as a command but as an appeal
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ἑκούσιον/मोनथावनायजों is this book’s clearest structural parallel to the baseline’s Critical-risk grace-versus-merit distinction (Romans 4:4-5, 11:5-6). Genuine goodness must be freely chosen, not extracted, yet this must be taught against two live currents at once: Brahma Dharma’s rule-based, obligation-oriented ethic, and traditional Bathou/Kherai ritual-exchange logic, both of which could pull ‘goodness’ toward compulsion or reciprocal debt rather than free grace-response. The obedience Paul expects (ὑπακοή) must likewise be distinguished from the baseline’s बिश्वासनि मानोन (‘obedience of faith’) and from a rule-compliance reading.

High Risk Doctrines

Christian Brotherhood across Social Status

Bodo name: समाजिक स्तर सोलाय भाईगिरि
Key terms: brother, beloved brother, in the flesh and in the Lord, sister
Review routing: Human theologian

ἀδελφός/भाई has no direct baseline precedent and must be newly established here. Must be taught as spiritual brotherhood in Christ transcending social status, explicitly distinguished from clan (afad) brotherhood, which in traditional Bodo kinship structure is exclusively a matter of shared blood-lineage. The doctrine’s force depends on holding together both social reality (‘in the flesh’) and spiritual family (‘in the Lord’) without collapsing either.

Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Bodo name: माफ खालामनाय आरो सुलिफिन जोंनाय
Key terms: receive him as you would receive me, partner, charge it to my account, wronged, owes
Review routing: Human theologian

The doctrine’s practical test case (προσλαμβάνω/आदाराव लाबोनाय) must be distinguished from private, internal forgiveness that produces no visible change in how Onesimus is treated in Philemon’s household. Paul’s offer to ‘charge’ Onesimus’s debt to his own account (ἐλλογάω/ऐसाव लिरनाय) is a human-level enactment of the same imputation logic behind the baseline’s Critical-risk imputed-righteousness doctrine and must be taught as illustrating, not equaling, the atonement.

Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another

Bodo name: गुबुननि थाखाय बिनयनाय आरो थाखालायनाय
Key terms: I appeal to you, prisoner of Christ Jesus, boldness, fellow soldier, fellow prisoner
Review routing: Human theologian

Paul’s personal, relational entreaty (παρακαλῶ/बिनयनाय) grounded in love must be distinguished from the mediated petitions traditionally carried to Bathoubwrai or the Kherai pantheon through a doudini or ओझा ritual specialist on a household’s behalf. Paul’s self-identification as ‘prisoner of Christ Jesus’ must be taught as voluntary gospel identity, not shame — a distinction requiring care given the contemporary Bodoland-region association of imprisonment with political conflict, which could otherwise cause this identity-language to be reheard as political martyrdom.

Spiritual Fatherhood in the Gospel

Bodo name: मंगल खबरनि आफानि जोरा
Key terms: my child, whom I have begotten in my imprisonment, my very heart
Review routing: Human theologian

Paul’s claim of spiritual fatherhood over Onesimus through leading him to faith (τέκνον/ἐγέννησα) is a genuinely new category for Bodo hearers, since spiritual fatherhood outside blood lineage has no ready equivalent in traditional Bodo clan (afad) kinship, where inheritance and identity run through birth lineage. Must not be confused with the baseline’s गोसोआव फैनाय (God’s own adoption of believers), a distinct doctrine describing God’s, not Paul’s, relationship to a believer.

Gospel Suffering as Ministry

Bodo name: मंगल खबरनि थाखाय दुख सायनाय सेवा
Key terms: prisoner of Christ Jesus, bonds of the gospel, fellow prisoner, he might serve me
Review routing: Human theologian

Paul’s imprisonment must be taught explicitly as voluntarily embraced gospel service, not political or criminal disgrace, and Onesimus’s potential help is elevated to the dignity of church service (διακονέω/सेवा). This is sensitive given both the contemporary Bodoland-region association of imprisonment with political conflict and the risk of सेवा collapsing into the reciprocal-service framing of traditional Bathou household offerings.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Household Church and Hospitality

Bodo name: नोआव थानाय मण्डली आरो आदाराव लाबोनाय
Key terms: the church in your house, prepare a guest room, refresh my heart
Review routing: Native speaker review

The gathered assembly meeting in Philemon’s household must be kept distinct from a building-institution or a village ritual site (नमासोलि), consistent with the baseline’s church-vs-नमासोलि distinction. The relational ‘refreshment’ Paul seeks (ἀναπαύω/गोसो सान्ति होनाय) must be distinguished from the household well-being traditionally secured through Bathou/Kherai offerings.
