Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — 2 Timothy (Full-Book Coverage)

Purpose and Method

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4/5 doctrine mapping for the entire book of 2 Timothy, chapter by chapter, section by section. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 21 doctrines, the same risk tiers (10 Critical, 8 High, 3 Medium, 0 Low), and the same review routing. No new doctrine names are introduced here; this file maps the registry’s doctrines onto every passage of the book so that full-book coverage is demonstrable, and explicitly marks passages/sections that carry forward already-analyzed doctrine without introducing new translation risk.

The core passage, 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5, anchors the curriculum theologically (Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; The Charge to Preach the Word) but is not the boundary of analysis — every chapter of the letter is covered below.

Risk tier definitions (unchanged from baseline and from the 2 Timothy doctrine risk registry):

  • Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
  • High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk; human theologian review required.
  • Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — minor imprecision; automated review sufficient.

Chapter 2 summary: All content maps to registered doctrines; the resurrection-error strand at 2:18 is flagged as doctrinally distinct from (though textually adjacent to) the reincarnation caution already flagged for 2:8.

Chapter 3: Last-Days Apostasy and the Sufficiency of Scripture

3:10-13 (Paul’s example of persecutions endured; evil men and impostors grow worse)Perseverance under Suffering; Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days1:8; 2:9-12; 3:10-13; 4:5, 16-17High / Critical3:12’s universal, unqualified promise (“all who desire to live godly…will suffer persecution”) must not be softened; फुसला होग्रा (deceivers) risk association with ओझा-type folk-ritual figures and must be framed as moral/doctrinal deception within the churchHuman theologian
3:14-17 (CORE PASSAGE begins: continue in what you have learned; sacred writings able to make wise for salvation; all Scripture God-breathed; profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, training; man of God thoroughly equipped)Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Salvation; Faith3:14-17Criticalईश्वरनि सासजों गोदान जानाय (God-breathed) is a genuine conceptual novelty for Bathou tradition, which has no scripture at all; must not use वाणी/oracle vocabulary evoking doudini-channeled utterance; “man of God” (ईश्वरनि मानुष) must describe every Scripture-formed believer, not a specialist religious officeHuman theologian

Chapter 3 summary: Chapter 3 contains the entry point of the core passage (3:14-17) and is the letter’s densest concentration of Critical-tier apostasy/Scripture doctrine. No section is exempt from theologian review.

4:6-8 (Poured out as a drink offering; time of departure at hand; fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith; crown of righteousness laid up; for all who have loved his appearing)Assurance of Reward; Perseverance under Suffering4:6-8; cf. 2:10-13Criticalजिउ दानै बानाय (poured out) must be sharply distinguished from repeated literal Bathou/Kherai offerings made to secure divine favor; धार्मिकतानि मुकुट (crown of righteousness) must be grace-given reward for faithfulness, never merit accumulated (guards against पुण्य) nor a ritual exchange object, and available to “all,” not a specialist rewardHuman theologian

4:19-22 (Final greetings; benediction: “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.”)Lordship of Christ; Grace4:22; cf. 1:2CriticalStandard closing benediction; no new doctrinal content beyond what is already registered for प्रभु and मोफादांनाय दान — reviewed and confirmed as carrying forward established renderings without deviationHuman theologian (per standing rule for Critical terms; no new analysis required)

Chapter 4 summary: Chapter 4 contains the core passage’s conclusion (4:1-5) plus the letter’s climactic reward theology (4:6-8) and its final personal/relational material (4:9-22), all of which map to already-registered doctrines. The closing benediction (4:19-22) is explicitly noted as reviewed and contributing no new doctrinal or translation risk beyond consistent reuse of established Critical-tier terms.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture

Bodo name: पबित्र सास्त्रनि ईश्वरीय प्रेरणा आरो पूरायथि
Key terms: scripture, god_breathed, man_of_god, thoroughly_equipped
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: θεόπνευστος (‘God-breathed,’ 3:16) is a genuine conceptual novelty, not a wrong-existing-word problem — Bathou tradition has no scripture at all, so no ready category exists to react against. The specific risk is reaching for वाणी/देउ-वाणी-style oracular vocabulary (evoking a doudini’s channeled utterance during Kherai trance) to render this term, which would wrongly cast Scripture as an ongoing oracular phenomenon rather than a fixed, once-given, complete written revelation. ‘Man of God’ (3:17) carries a secondary High-risk collision with recognized religious-specialist offices (doudini, ओझा, Brahma Dharma teacher) and must be taught as describing every Scripture-formed believer, not a specialist class.

Guarding Sound Doctrine

Bodo name: गेदेर सिक्षाखौ रैखा खालामनाय
Key terms: sound_doctrine, sound_words, teaching_doctrine, rightly_dividing, profane_empty_chatter, gangrene_spreading_error, faithful_saying, deposit
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: γεδेर सिक्षा (‘sound/healthy doctrine’) risks being misheard as whichever teaching feels spiritually vigorous or emotionally satisfying to hearers — precisely the danger 4:3’s ‘itching ears’ warning names. Soundness must be taught as conformity to the fixed apostolic deposit (παραθήκη), never as a matter of audience experience. A second risk: ‘rightly dividing’ Scripture (2:15) must not be presented as a specialist’s exclusive interpretive privilege paralleling an ओझा’s or doudini’s access to hidden meaning.

Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days

Bodo name: सिमानि सानाव फुसला सिकाइग्रा आरो बिश्वासनि गारिनाय
Key terms: last_days, turning_away_from_truth, myths, itching_ears, form_without_power, deceivers_impostors, godliness
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ‘godliness’ (εὐσέβεια, 3:5, 3:12) deliberately avoids भक्ति to prevent biblical godliness being heard as a variety of Hindu bhakti-movement devotion, especially given Brahma Dharma’s own Sanskritized 1912 reform. A second Critical-adjacent risk: ‘turning away’ (ἀποστρέφω, 4:4) shares its root सोलायनाय with the baseline’s resurrection term, requiring explicit contrast in every lesson to prevent learner confusion between a negative moral turning-away and Christ’s positive turning-back-to-life. ‘Myths’ (μῦθος, 4:4) must be confined strictly to false teaching arising within the church and never applied to Bathou oral tradition’s own origin narratives about Bathoubwrai, which deserve respectful treatment as cultural heritage.

Assurance of Reward

Bodo name: ईश्वरनि पुरस्कारनि निश्चय
Key terms: crown_of_righteousness, that_day, deny_him, good_fight, poured_out_as_offering, his_appearing, judge_living_and_dead, the_elect
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: the ‘crown of righteousness’ (4:8), built on the Critical धार्मिकता root, must be taught as a grace-given eschatological reward for faithfulness — never merit accumulated through disciplined religious observance (guarding against a Brahma Dharma पुण्य-style reading) and never a ritual object exchanged for services rendered to a deity (guarding against a Bathou/Kherai reciprocal-offering reading). The stark warning ‘if we deny Him, He will also deny us’ (2:12) must be preserved in full symmetrical force alongside God’s own unconditional faithfulness (2:13) without theological flattening in either direction — flagged explicitly for human theologian review given this tension.

Grace

Bodo name: मोफादांनाय दान
Key terms: grace, mercy
Review routing: Human theologian

2 Timothy 1:9 (‘not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace’) directly parallels the Critical grace-versus-works contrast the baseline names for Romans 4:4-5 and 11:5-6; the same forbidden-substitution rules apply here (never पुण्य, never reciprocal-exchange framing). ‘Mercy’ (ἔλεος, 1:2), paired with grace in the salutation, carries the same collision risk and should be taught alongside grace as a linked pair.

Salvation

Bodo name: फोरायनाय
Key terms: salvation, savior, rescue_from_danger
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: as in the baseline, this is a genuine conceptual gap, not a wrong-existing-word problem — Bathou religious life has no developed eschatological salvation concept. 2 Timothy sharpens the risk further by introducing a distinct this-life ‘rescue’ vocabulary (ῥύομαι, 3:11, 4:17-18) alongside eternal salvation (σωτηρία); the two must be kept explicitly distinct in teaching, since collapsing them would flatten salvation into the this-worldly protection Bathou/Kherai offerings are meant to secure. Never use Brahma Dharma’s मोक्ष-style liberation language.

Resurrection of Christ

Bodo name: मसीहनि जिउनाय सोलायनाय
Key terms: resurrection, seed_of_david, turning_away_from_truth
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 2:8’s creedal formula must render identically to its Romans 1:3-4 counterpart per cross-document consistency. 2:18 introduces a second, distinct risk beyond the baseline’s फिन जोनोम (rebirth) caution: Hymenaeus and Philetus teach that the resurrection has ‘already happened’ — a proto-Gnostic over-spiritualizing error, not a rebirth-cycle error. Both errors must be named and distinguished separately in teaching notes, since conflating them would obscure the specific nature of this false teaching.

Lordship of Christ

Bodo name: मसीहनि प्रभुत्व
Key terms: lord, judge_living_and_dead, his_appearing
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: प्रभु recurs more densely in 2 Timothy than almost any other term in the letter and must never be rendered with the honorific elder-titles बर’ऐ/बुरहा reserved for Bathoubwrai and the Kherai pantheon. 4:1’s pairing of Christ’s Lordship with his exclusive role as judge of the living and the dead sharpens this risk: Christ’s judgment must be taught as his own personal, supreme, exclusive authority, never as one great elder-spirit’s verdict among several in a populated pantheon.

Godliness and True Devotion

Bodo name: ईश्वर-मानानाय
Key terms: godliness, form_without_power, love
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: as recorded in the term registry, εὐσέβεια deliberately avoids भक्ति to prevent biblical godliness from being heard as a variety of Hindu bhakti-movement devotion, especially given Brahma Dharma’s Sanskritized 1912 reform of Bodo religious identity toward exactly this kind of devotional framework. ‘Form without power’ (3:5) must be taught as an internal critique of the professing church in the last days, never as a blanket comparative-religion verdict against Bathou ritual observance.

Divine Judgment and Christ’s Return

Bodo name: मसीहनि फिन फैनाय आरो बिसारनाय
Key terms: judge_living_and_dead, his_appearing, that_day
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ‘his appearing’ (ἐπιφάνεια) must never be conflated with the radiant, altered state attributed to a doudini during Kherai-trance possession; Bathou worship’s own aniconic character (centered on the sijou plant, never an embodied deity) makes ‘a deity becoming visible’ a genuinely unfamiliar doctrinal category requiring explicit teaching, not an assumed cultural parallel. Judgment of ‘the dead’ must not be read through the lens of venerated ancestral household spirits exercising judgment over the living — Christ alone judges all.

High Risk Doctrines

Faithful Transmission of the Gospel

Bodo name: मंगल खबरनि बिश्वासजाब्ला सोंपनाय
Key terms: deposit, entrust, faithful_men, laying_on_of_hands, gospel
Review routing: Human theologian

The gospel is a traceable, personal chain-of-custody transmission (Paul -> Timothy -> faithful men -> others also, 2:2), unlike the largely oral, untraceable transmission of Bathou ritual knowledge, which has no fixed textual or genealogical chain of custody. The ‘laying on of hands’ (1:6) must be distinguished from any power-transfer gesture associated with a doudini’s or ओझा’s ritual practice: the Spirit’s gift is sovereignly given by God, only symbolized (not magically caused) by the human gesture.

The Charge to Preach the Word

Bodo name: रावखौ सोमोन्दो होनाय हुकुम
Key terms: solemn_charge, preach_the_word, evangelist, judge_living_and_dead
Review routing: Human theologian

Paul’s solemn charge (διαμαρτύρομαι, 4:1), invoking God and Christ as witnesses, must be distinguished from a doudini’s solemn ritual invocation formula during Kherai puja — this is apostolic commission under the one true God’s witness, not a ritual incantation. ‘Preach the word’ (κήρυξον) must convey heraldic, authoritative public proclamation, not a private opinion offered among several religious viewpoints in a pluralistic village setting.

Perseverance under Suffering

Bodo name: दुखनि गुबुन सहनाय
Key terms: suffering_hardship, endurance_perseverance, persecution, not_ashamed, strengthened_by_grace, rescue_from_danger, fear_timidity
Review routing: Human theologian

Suffering for the gospel must not be read as misfortune, bad karma, or ritual impurity requiring appeasement of Bathoubwrai or the Kherai pantheon through offerings — it is a calling, even an honor (1:12), not a condition to be ritually corrected. A distinct risk: this-life rescue (ῥύομαι, 3:11, 4:17-18) must be kept categorically separate from eschatological salvation (φोरायनाय); collapsing the two flattens salvation into the this-worldly protection concept Bathou/Kherai ritual practice is oriented toward securing.

Faith

Bodo name: बिश्वास
Key terms: faith, faithful_men, faithful_saying
Review routing: Human theologian

1:5 presents faith as a trans-generational inheritance (Lois, Eunice, Timothy), reinforcing that the object of बिश्वास must always be traceable to specific persons and ultimately to Christ, not read as generic devotion transferable to Bathoubwrai or the Kherai pantheon. 4:7 (‘I have kept the faith’) requires बिश्वास to carry the sense of a guarded, settled possession at life’s end, not a fluid or evolving personal conviction.

Effectual Calling and Election

Bodo name: फिनायाव आरो ईश्वरनि सायख
Key terms: calling, election, the_elect
Review routing: Human theologian

1:9 stacks calling, holiness, and salvation vocabulary in a single clause describing God’s sovereign, purposive summons ‘not according to our works.’ 2:10’s ‘the elect’ (ईश्वरनि सायखा मानुष) inherits the baseline’s caution against भागी (impersonal fate/fortune) framing familiar from both folk belief and Brahma Dharma’s ethic; God’s election is personal and relational, not an impersonal destiny.

Repentance and Restoration

Bodo name: गुनाहजों फिन जानाय
Key terms: repentance, knowledge_of_truth, the_devil
Review routing: Human theologian

Repentance (μετάνοια) must be taught as an inward, moral turning of the whole person toward God, distinct from the external ritual purification performed before Kherai and other Bathou household/courtyard ceremonies to restore community harmony. Escape from the devil’s snare (2:26) requires सैतान to be understood as a singular personal adversary, unlike the diffuse nature- and ancestral-spirits of Bathou belief.

The Faithfulness of God

Bodo name: ईश्वरनि बिश्वासजाब्लायथि
Key terms: faithful_saying, deny_him
Review routing: Human theologian

‘He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself’ (2:13) must be taught as God’s own unconditional, character-grounded faithfulness, not a reciprocal or transactional faithfulness contingent on human performance — while the immediately preceding warning (‘if we deny Him, He will deny us’) retains real force. This tension between unconditional divine faithfulness and genuine human accountability must not be resolved by softening either clause.

Spiritual Warfare against the Devil

Bodo name: सैताननि सोলोदाव जुजनाय
Key terms: the_devil, repentance
Review routing: Human theologian

सैतान must be presented as a singular, personal, malevolent adversary who ensnares false teachers and their hearers — distinct from the morally diffuse nature-spirits and ancestral spirits recognized in the Bathou spirit-world, none of which functions as a unified personal tempter figure requiring this kind of decisive opposition.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Spiritual Gifts

Bodo name: आत्मानि दान
Key terms: spiritual_gifts, laying_on_of_hands
Review routing: Native speaker review

The Spirit’s gift for ministry, received through ordination (laying on of hands), must not be confused with सक्ति attributed to a doudini’s trance abilities during Kherai puja; the gift serves the church and is sovereignly Spirit-given, not ritually induced.

Kingdom of God

Bodo name: ईश्वरनि राज्य
Key terms: kingdom_of_god
Review routing: Native speaker review

Christ’s kingdom (4:1) and his ‘heavenly kingdom’ (4:18) must be distinguished from any territorial-political framing, an especially live risk given the Bodoland Territorial Region’s own strong contemporary association of Bodo identity with territorial political claims.

Mission to the Nations

Bodo name: गैर-जुथुदखौनि थाखाय मंगल खबरनि दायो
Key terms: gentiles, evangelist, preach_the_word
Review routing: Native speaker review

‘That all the Gentiles might hear’ (4:17) should be framed as the church’s own ongoing calling, consistent with the baseline’s caution about American Baptist mission history becoming entangled in local memory with colonial-era administration among the Bodo.
