Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 1 Peter (Full Book) — English → Bodo
Methodology Note
This analysis follows the Koine Greek text of 1 Peter chapter by chapter, first to last. The core passage (1 Peter 1:3-9) receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-section treatment of its load-bearing theological terms using the same field set. Where a term is already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, the established Bodo rendering is reused exactly and marked “[Reused — Romans TM]”; no alternative rendering is proposed. New terms required for 1 Peter’s distinctive doctrines (living hope, ransom/redemption, holy and royal priesthood, elders, spirits in prison, etc.) are analyzed fresh and checked against the same two comparative-religion currents documented in the baseline: Bathouism (Bathoubwrai, the sijou plant, Kherai puja, the doudini medium, the populated spirit-world of nature- and ancestor-spirits) and Brahma Dharma (Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma’s 1912 Sanskritized reform toward Hindu monotheism, merit-ethics, and rebirth language). All new terms proposed here are provisional pending confirmation by a Bodo-speaking theologian, consistent with the baseline’s own practice for its provisional compounds (grace, covenant, adoption, imputed righteousness).

PART 1 — Core Passage: 1 Peter 1:3-9 (Verse-by-Verse)
1 Peter 1:3
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,“
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εὐλογητός | eulogētos | ”well-spoken-of,” blessed | Doxological praise-word opening a blessing/benediction | blessed, praised | Opens the letter’s theological thesis with praise directed at God alone for his saving initiative | धिनानाय जोगोनाय / “महिमामोन्थि” — descriptive: “प्रशंसा जोगोनाय ईश्वर” (God worthy of praise). Low-Medium: standard doxological form, low collision risk, but should not be flattened to a mere greeting-word. |
| ὁ θεὸς καὶ πατήρ | ho theos kai patēr | the God and Father | God as both God and Father simultaneously, one referent | God, the Father | Identifies God specifically as Father of the Lord Jesus Christ — the same relational Father named in Romans 8 | ईश्वर / आफा [Reused — Romans TM, Critical]. Reuse exactly; never बाथौबुरै for ईश्वर, never a Bathou elder-deity title for आफा. |
| κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός | kyrios hēmōn Iēsous Christos | our Lord Jesus Christ | Full title combining supreme authority + proper name + messianic office | Lord Jesus Christ | The exclusive, supreme, personal Lord confessed by the church | प्रभु जिसु मसीह [Reused — Romans TM, Critical]. Never render “Lord” with बर’ऐ/बुरहा honorifics. |
| κατὰ τὸ πολὺ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος | kata to poly autou eleos | according to his great/abundant mercy | Compassionate favor shown toward those in need or distress, distinct from χάρις (grace, favor toward the undeserving generally) | mercy, great mercy, abundant mercy | The motive-cause of regeneration is God’s own compassion, not human merit or ritual exchange | दैया (doya) — “बांद्राय दैया” (great mercy). Medium-High: दैया must be explicitly tied to God’s own initiative, not to a reciprocal pity secured through offerings, echoing the same grace-vs-exchange concern the baseline flags for मोफादांनाय दान. Requires explicit teaching alongside grace. |
| ἀναγεννήσας | anagennēsas | having caused to be born again / having regenerated | A begetting/birthing verb (γεννάω) intensified by ἀνα- (“again,” “anew”); denotes a decisive, once-for-all divine act producing new spiritual life | regenerated, caused to be born again, given new birth | The believer’s new life originates entirely in God’s initiative, not in a repeatable cycle | फिन जिउनाय होनाय (phin jiunai honai, “being caused to live again”). CRITICAL: must never be rendered फिन जोनोम (rebirth/reincarnation), the term the baseline explicitly forbids for “resurrection” because it was absorbed into Bodo religious discourse through Brahma Dharma’s Hindu-influenced reform teaching. The same forbidden-substitution logic applies here with even greater force, since “born again” is verbally closer to birth/rebirth vocabulary than “resurrection” is. This is a once-for-all new-birth event, not entry into another cycle of existence. |
| ἐλπὶς ζῶσα | elpis zōsa | living hope | ἐλπίς = expectation/hope; ζῶσα (present participle of ζάω, “to live”) modifying it as “alive, active, vital” rather than dead/inert | living hope, a hope that lives, vibrant hope | Hope that is grounded in a historical, accomplished, ongoing-active reality (the risen Christ), not wishful anticipation | जिउनाय आशा (jiunai asha, “living hope”). CRITICAL: this is a genuine conceptual gap parallel to “salvation” in the baseline. Bathou ritual life secures protection and prosperity in this life; it has no developed hope-of-resurrection category oriented toward a future certain destiny. Brahma Dharma’s own religious confidence is grounded in accumulated merit and cyclical cosmology, not in a once-for-all historical resurrection. जिउनाय आशा must be taught as hope anchored in Christ’s resurrection specifically, not read as generic optimism or fate-confidence (भागी). |
| δι’ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐκ νεκρῶν | di’ anastaseōs Iēsou Christou ek nekrōn | through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead | The instrumental means by which the living hope is generated: Christ’s own historical bodily resurrection | through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead | Bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection as the objective ground of the believer’s hope | जिउनाय सोलायनाय [Reused — Romans TM, Critical]. Never फिन जोनोम. |
1 Peter 1:4
“…to an inheritance that is imperishable, unstained, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,“
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κληρονομία | klēronomia | inheritance, allotted portion | Property/status received by right through relationship (originally by birth or legal succession) | inheritance, heritage, allotted portion | The believer’s certain future possession secured by God, received through the new birth of 1:3, not through clan lineage | उत्तराधिकार (uttaradhikar, Sanskrit/Assamese loan, “inheritance”). High: traditional Bodo clan (afad) inheritance runs strictly through birth lineage and land; this inheritance is heavenly, spiritual, and received through the new birth described in v.3, not through afad membership. Must be taught explicitly, echoing the baseline’s “adoption” note. |
| ἄφθαρτος | aphthartos | not subject to decay, imperishable | Negation of φθείρω (“to decay/corrupt/destroy”) — indestructible, incorruptible | imperishable, incorruptible, undecaying | The inheritance cannot be destroyed by time, decay, or death | अविनाशी (avinashi, Sanskrit loan, “imperishable”). High: अविनाशी is the same word Hindu philosophical usage applies to the imperishable soul/self (avinashi atma), and Brahma Dharma’s reform draws directly on this vocabulary. Must be anchored explicitly to the inheritance kept “in heaven” through Christ’s resurrection, not allowed to suggest an inherently indestructible human soul-essence. |
| ἀμίαντος | amiantos | unstained, undefiled | Negation of μιαίνω (“to stain/defile,” often ritually) | undefiled, unstained, unpolluted | The inheritance is untouched by sin’s corrupting effect | दागा-गैया (daga-gaiya, “without stain/blemish”). Medium: risk of being heard only as ritual/ceremonial cleanliness (paralleling Bathou/Kherai purification rites) rather than moral purity; pair explicitly with पबित्र (holy) in teaching. |
| ἀμάραντος | amarantos | unfading (lit. “not withering,” root shared with the amaranth flower) | Botanical metaphor for a flower that does not wilt | unfading, that does not fade away | The inheritance’s value and beauty never diminish — reused later for the “unfading crown” of 5:4 | गोमानाय-गैया (gwmanai-gaiya, “does not wither/fade”). Low-Medium: mainly requires the botanical metaphor to be explained; keep consistent with 5:4’s crown for teaching coherence. |
| τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς | tetērēmenēn en ouranois | having been kept/guarded in the heavens | Perfect passive participle of τηρέω, “to keep watch over, preserve” | reserved, kept, guarded in heaven | God himself actively preserves this inheritance in a location beyond this world’s decay | ईश्वरा स्वर्गाव रखा खालामबाय (Isora sworgao rokha khalamboi, “God has kept [it] safe in heaven”). Medium: distinguish from a this-worldly guarded treasure or protected harvest — the location and security are wholly heavenly, not household- or land-based. |
1 Peter 1:5
“…who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δυνάμει θεοῦ | dynamei theou | by/in the power of God | God’s active capability exercised toward a purpose | power of God, God’s might | The same divine power that raises the dead now guards believers | ईश्वरनि सक्ति [Reused — Romans TM, High]. |
| φρουρουμένους | phrouroumenous | being guarded, garrisoned | Military metaphor: to stand guard over, protect as a garrison protects a city | guarded, kept, protected, garrisoned | Believers are actively, continuously protected by God’s own power until the inheritance is fully received | ईश्वरनि सक्तिजों रखा जानाय (Isor ni saktijwng rokha janai, “being guarded/protected by the power of God”). High: this “guarding” language sits directly next to the folk-protection domain the baseline’s salvation entry explicitly rejects (रैखाथि — protection secured from the Kherai pantheon against misfortune). Must always be anchored to ईश्वरनि सक्ति and to the object being guarded (an eschatological, heavenly salvation/inheritance), never left as free-standing “protection” language that could be reheard as this-life Kherai-style misfortune-protection. |
| πίστις | pistis | faith, trust | Personal reliance/trust placed in a specific object | faith, trust, belief | The believer’s continuing trust in Christ is the means (not the ground) of being guarded | बिश्वास [Reused — Romans TM, High]. Object of faith (Christ) must remain explicit in teaching. |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | salvation, deliverance | Rescue, deliverance, restoration to wholeness | salvation, deliverance, rescue | The full, final, eschatological salvation yet to be consummated at Christ’s return | फोरायनाय [Reused — Romans TM, Critical]. Never मोक्ष (Brahma Dharma liberation) or रैखाथि alone. |
| ἀποκαλυφθῆναι | apokalyphthēnai | to be revealed, unveiled | Removal of a covering so what was hidden becomes visible | to be revealed, disclosed, unveiled | Salvation’s fullness is presently hidden but guaranteed to be publicly disclosed | प्रकास होनाय (prokash honai, “to be made manifest/revealed”). Medium: standard eschatological unveiling language; ensure it is not confused with the doudini’s ritual “unveiling”/manifestation of a deity during Kherai trance — this is Christ’s own future public disclosure of an already-secured salvation, not a mediated, repeatable ritual event. |
| καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ | kairō eschatō | at the last time / in the last season | A specific, climactic, final point in redemptive history | last time, last days, end time | The consummation of salvation history at Christ’s return | सिमान्तनि सम (simantoni som, “the time of the end/boundary”). Medium-High: linear, historical eschatology (a fixed, coming final time) is a genuine conceptual gap for both Bathouism (no developed eschatology; ritual life is cyclical and this-worldly) and Brahma Dharma (which absorbed a cyclical/rebirth cosmology). Must be taught from the ground up, echoing the baseline’s treatment of “resurrection” and “salvation.” |
1 Peter 1:6
“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,“
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαλλιᾶσθε | agalliasthe | you exult, you rejoice greatly | Intensive joy-verb, stronger than χαίρω; often used of eschatological/worship joy | rejoice greatly, exult, are overjoyed | Joy grounded in the certain future inheritance of vv.3-5, present even amid trial | गासै रोमांसिनाय (gasai romansinai, “rejoicing wholly/deeply”). Low-Medium: mainly requires conveying intensity; must not be confused with ritual ecstatic states (e.g., a doudini’s trance-joy during Kherai puja) — this is settled, reasoned joy grounded in a historical fact (Christ’s resurrection), not an induced altered state. |
| ὀλίγον ἄρτι | oligon arti | for a little while now | Temporal qualifier: brief, limited duration | for a little while, briefly, for a short time | Present suffering is time-bound and temporary against the backdrop of the eternal inheritance | होबाव सम (hobao som, “for a short time”). Low. |
| λυπηθέντες | lypēthentes | having been grieved | Passive of λυπέω, “to cause sorrow/distress” | grieved, distressed, made sorrowful | Genuine emotional pain is acknowledged, not denied, within the framework of living hope | गोसो नोंथाबनाय (gwsw nwnthabnai, “being made sorrowful/heartbroken”). Low. |
| ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς | poikilois peirasmois | various/manifold trials | πειρασμός: a trial, test, or temptation, testing genuineness; ποικίλος: “of many kinds, varied” | various trials, manifold temptations/troubles, diverse testings | The full range of hardships (including persecution addressed later in the letter) that test faith’s genuineness | गुबुन-गुबुन परीक्षा (gubun-gubun porikša, “various trials/tests”). Medium: must be distinguished from misfortune addressed through Bathou/Kherai protective ritual; these trials are the arena in which genuine faith in Christ is proved, not a sign of ritual neglect or ancestral-spirit displeasure requiring propitiation. |
1 Peter 1:7
“…so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τὸ δοκίμιον…τῆς πίστεως | to dokimion tēs pisteōs | the tested-genuineness/proof of your faith | δοκίμιον: the process/result of testing metal for purity; a refining term | genuineness, proven character, tested quality of faith | Trials function like a refiner’s fire, proving (not producing) authentic faith | बिश्वासनि परीक्षा (biswasni porikša, “the testing/proving of faith”). Medium: reuses बिश्वास [Romans TM, High]; the compound must convey a refining/proving process, not merely an ordeal. |
| πολυτιμότερον χρυσίου | polytimoteron chrysiou | more precious than gold | Comparative value-statement | more precious than gold, of greater worth than gold | Faith’s proven genuineness outvalues even the most treasured earthly metal | बांद्राय मूल्यवान होन’फ्राय बां (mulyoban hwn-fray bang, “more precious than gold”). Low. |
| διὰ πυρὸς δοκιμαζομένου | dia pyros dokimazomenou | tested/proved through fire | Metallurgical refining process | tested by fire, proved through fire | Standard refining metaphor; the trials of v.6 are this fire | मुयजों परीक्षा जानाय (moijwng porikša janai, “tested through fire”). Low. |
| ἔπαινον καὶ δόξαν καὶ τιμήν | epainon kai doxan kai timēn | praise and glory and honor | Triad of eschatological reward-vocabulary | praise, glory, and honor | The proven believer receives commendation from Christ himself at his return | प्रशंसा, महिमा, आरो सम्मान (proshongsa, mohima, aro sommaan). महिमा [Reused — Romans TM, High]; प्रशंसा/सम्मान new, Low-Medium. |
| ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | apokalypsei Iēsou Christou | at the revelation of Jesus Christ | Christ’s future, visible, public unveiling — his return | at the revelation/appearing of Jesus Christ, at his second coming | The Second Coming as the moment faith’s proof is publicly vindicated | जिसु मसीहनि प्रकास होनाय सम (Jisu Mosih ni prokash honai som, “the time of Jesus Christ’s being revealed”). Medium-High: linear historical Second Coming; same eschatological conceptual-gap concern as v.5’s “last time.” |
1 Peter 1:8
“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,“
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οὐκ ἰδόντες ἀγαπᾶτε | ouk idontes agapate | not having seen, you love | Present, ongoing love directed at an unseen object | you love him without having seen him | Personal, relational love for Christ that does not depend on physical sight | निया गैयानो प्रेम होनाय (nia gaiyano prem honai, “loving without having seen”). प्रेम new term — Medium: प्रेम (Sanskrit/Hindi loan for covenantal/selfless love, distinct from generic affection मया) must be taught as directed specifically and personally at the unseen but historically real, risen Christ — not as devotional feeling transferable to an unseen deity within the Bathou/Kherai spirit-world, several of whose figures (Bathoubwrai himself) are likewise never visually seen but are approached aniconically through the sijou plant. This parallel needs explicit distinguishing. |
| πιστεύοντες | pisteuontes | believing | Present participle of πιστεύω, ongoing trust/belief | believing, trusting | Continuing present-tense trust in the unseen Christ | बिश्वास खालामनाय [Reused root — Romans TM, High]. |
| ἀγαλλιᾶτε χαρᾷ ἀνεκλαλήτῳ καὶ δεδοξασμένῃ | agalliate chara aneklalētō kai dedoxasmenē | you exult with joy inexpressible and glorified | Joy so intense it exceeds verbal expression, and already suffused with (a foretaste of) future glory | you rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy | Present joy that anticipates and already partakes of the glory to be fully revealed | रायज्लायथाव नङा आरो महिमाजों गोरोबथाव रोमांसि (raijlaithao nwnga aro mohimajwng gwrwbthao romansi, “joy that cannot be spoken and is filled with glory”). महिमा [Reused]; rest new, Low-Medium. |
1 Peter 1:9
“…obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κομιζόμενοι | komizomenoi | receiving, obtaining | Present participle: presently receiving what is due | obtaining, receiving | The ongoing, already-in-process reception of the goal of faith | मोनथिनाय (mwnthinai, “obtaining/receiving”). Low. |
| τὸ τέλος τῆς πίστεως | to telos tēs pisteōs | the goal/end/outcome of your faith | τέλος: end-point, culmination, intended result | the outcome/goal/result of faith | Faith’s proper, intended culmination | बिश्वासनि फल (biswasni fwl, “the fruit/outcome of faith”). Low-Medium: reuses बिश्वास; “फल” (fruit/result) risk is minor, must not be read as merit earning a reward. |
| σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν | sōtērian psychōn | salvation of souls | ψυχή: the inner life/self, the whole person’s inner being (not the Greek philosophical immortal-soul category) | salvation of souls, salvation of the inner self | The full, personal salvation of the whole inner person, already the settled object of faith | जिउनि फोरायनाय (jiu ni phoraynai, “salvation of the [inner] life”). फोरायनाय [Reused — Romans TM, Critical]; जिउ (life/inner-being) is a deliberate new choice — Medium: ψυχή is intentionally NOT rendered with आत्मा (the Sanskrit loan carrying the Hindu philosophical concept of ātman, an eternal, transmigrating self used in Brahma Dharma’s reform framework), for the same reason the baseline spells “Holy Spirit” as पबित्र आत्था rather than आत्मा. जिउ (drawn from the same root as जिउनाय सोलायनाय, “resurrection”) keeps the vocabulary internally consistent and avoids importing a pre-existing doctrine of the soul’s nature. |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (remainder: 1:1-2, 1:10-25)
(1:3-9 treated fully above as the core passage.)
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:1) | apostolos Iēsou Christou | apostle of Jesus Christ | Authorized, commissioned sent-one | apostle | Peter’s own authoritative, Christ-commissioned office opening the letter | गोदान जायगारि [Reused — Romans TM, Medium]. |
| ἐκλεκτοῖς παρεπιδήμοις διασπορᾶς (1:1) | eklektois parepidēmois diasporas | to the elect exiles of the dispersion | ἐκλεκτός: chosen; παρεπίδημος: a temporary resident/sojourner in a foreign land; διασπορά: a “scattering,” the technical term for dispersed Jewish (and here, by extension, Christian) communities living outside their homeland | to the elect exiles of the Dispersion, to God’s scattered chosen people | The letter’s whole audience is defined at the outset as chosen-yet-displaced — an identity that frames every following exhortation | सायखाव परदेसीसरि (saikhao pordeshi-sori, “chosen sojourners/exiles”). ईश्वरनि सायख [Reused]; परदेसी new — High: this is a foundational identity-term for the entire letter (recurring 1:17, 2:11). It names a spiritual displacement — belonging fully to God’s coming kingdom while living as a temporary resident in this present world — which must be sharply distinguished from the real, contemporary ethnic-territorial and migration-related displacement experienced by many communities in the Bodoland Territorial Region. Teach as a theological identity, not a commentary on political status. |
| πρόγνωσις θεοῦ πατρός (1:2) | prognōsis theou patros | foreknowledge of God the Father | Prior, sovereign, personal knowing/choosing | foreknowledge, foreordination | The believer’s chosen status is grounded in God’s own prior sovereign purpose | ईश्वरनि आगोत्ति मोनथिनाय (Isor ni agotti mwnthinai, “God’s foreknowing/knowing beforehand”). High: must never be reheard as भागी (impersonal fate), the same risk the baseline flags for election and providence — this is personal, relational foreknowledge by the Father specifically, not an impersonal cosmic determinism. |
| ἁγιασμῷ πνεύματος (1:2) | hagiasmō pneumatos | sanctification of the Spirit | The Spirit’s own setting-apart work | sanctification by/of the Spirit | The Spirit’s active role in setting believers apart from the very start of their calling | पबित्रनाय (आत्थानि) [Reused — Romans TM, High]. |
| ῥαντισμὸν αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:2) | rantismon haimatos Iēsou Christou | sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ | Old Testament covenant-ratification and cleansing ritual (Exodus 24; Leviticus) applied to Christ’s blood | sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ | Believers are brought into covenant relationship and cleansed through Christ’s blood, echoing Sinai covenant ritual | रक्त बिसोरनाय (rokto bisornai, “sprinkling of blood”). Medium: requires explicit Old Testament covenant-ritual background teaching, since this imagery has no built-in equivalent in Bathou/Kherai offering practice; do not let it collapse into a generic purification-rite reading. |
| πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ (1:11) | pneuma Christou | the Spirit of Christ | The Holy Spirit specifically identified as Christ’s own Spirit, active already in the Old Testament prophets | the Spirit of Christ | Affirms the pre-existent Christ’s active inspiration of Old Testament prophecy | मसीहनि पबित्र आत्था (Mosih ni pobitro aatha). Critical: पबित्र आत्था must always appear in full [Reused — Romans TM]; never bare आत्था/देउ. |
| παθήματα…καὶ…δόξας (1:11) | pathēmata kai doxas | sufferings and glories | The paired sequence of Christ’s suffering followed by subsequent glory, foretold by the prophets | the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow | The prophets foresaw both Christ’s suffering and his resulting glory as a single foreordained sequence — the letter’s central theological pattern (suffering-then-glory) for both Christ and believers | मसीहनि दुख आरो सोलोंगारि महिमा (Mosih ni dukh aro solongari mohima, “Christ’s suffering and the glory that follows”). High: महिमा [Reused]; दुख (suffering) new, foundational for the letter’s Christlike-endurance doctrine — must be taught as a single foreordained divine pattern, not two unrelated events. |
| ἐν φόβῳ…τὸν τῆς παροικίας χρόνον ἀναστράφητε (1:17) | en phobō ton tēs paroikias chronon anastraphēte | conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your sojourning | παροικία: temporary residence/sojourn; ἀναστρέφομαι: to conduct oneself, live one’s life | conduct yourselves during the time of your exile/sojourn | Reverent conduct is to characterize the whole of this present, temporary earthly life | परदेसी थानाय सम गिबि होनाय-जों जिउ हरनाय (pordeshi thanai som gibi honai-jwng jiu hornai, “living with reverence during the time of sojourning”). परदेसी reused from 1:1 note; ἀναστρέφομαι — see ἀναστροφή entry, Ch. 2. |
| ἐλυτρώθητε (1:18) | elytrōthēte | you were ransomed/redeemed | λυτρόω: to release by paying a price (a slave, a captive) | you were ransomed, redeemed, bought back | Believers are freed from their former empty way of life at a specific, costly price paid by Christ | मुल्यजों फोरायनाय (mulyojwng phoraynai, “delivered/rescued by means of a price”). CRITICAL: this term sits directly on the fault line the baseline names for “grace” — the risk that a reciprocal, do-ut-des logic (offerings given to Bathoubwrai/the Kherai pantheon in exchange for protection) will reframe this as a transaction the believer performs. It must be taught with maximal clarity that Christ himself pays the price on the believer’s behalf; the believer contributes nothing and receives everything as gift (मोफादांनाय दान). |
| ματαίας ἀναστροφῆς πατροπαραδότου (1:18) | mataias anastrophēs patroparadotou | futile way of life handed down from the fathers | ἀναστροφή: conduct/way of life; πατροπαράδοτος: “handed down from the fathers/ancestors” | your futile/empty ancestral way of life, the empty way of life inherited from your forefathers | Redemption liberates believers specifically from an inherited ancestral pattern of life, not merely personal sin | बुरहा-बुरहीसरिनि फ्राय मोनथिनाय गोबां गुनथि गैया थानाय (bworha-bworhi-sori ni fray mwnthinai gwbang gunthi gaiya thanai, “the empty/purposeless way of life received from the ancestors”). High: this phrase requires acute pastoral sensitivity in the Bodo context, where ancestral religious tradition (Bathouism, transmitted household-to-household through generations) is precisely the kind of “way of life handed down from the fathers” many converts are being redeemed from. Teach with care and without contempt for family and community, following the same posture the baseline models for mission/evangelism (proclamation and witness, not confrontation). |
| αἵματι…ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου Χριστοῦ (1:19) | haimati hōs amnou amōmou kai aspilou Christou | with the blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, of Christ | Sacrificial-lamb imagery from the Passover and Levitical sacrifices, applied to Christ | the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot | Christ’s death is the perfect, once-for-all sacrificial payment for redemption | निर्दोष मेंढा जों मूल्यवान रक्त (nirdosh mendha jwng mulyoban rokto, “precious blood like a blameless lamb”). Critical/High: requires Old Testament sacrificial background teaching, since neither Bathou offering-practice nor Brahma Dharma’s reformed ethic includes a vicarious sin-bearing sacrificial lamb concept. |
| προεγνωσμένου πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου (1:20) | proegnōsmenou pro katabolēs kosmou | foreknown before the foundation of the world | Christ’s redemptive role planned in eternity past | foreknown before the world’s creation | Christ’s redemptive sacrifice was not a late improvisation but eternally purposed | संसार बानायनायनि सिगां ईश्वरा आगोत्ति मोनबाय (swnsar banainai ni sigang Isora agotti mwnboi). Reuses आगोत्ति मोनथिनाय (foreknowledge) root from 1:2. |
| ἐκ καρδίας ἀλλήλους ἀγαπήσατε ἐκτενῶς (1:22) | ek kardias allēlous agapēsate ektenōs | love one another earnestly from the heart | Sincere, wholehearted, sustained love among believers | love one another earnestly/fervently from a pure heart | The obedience-to-truth that purifies the soul (v.22a) issues necessarily in fervent mutual love | गोसो सोदोबनायजों गोबां प्रेम होनाय (gwsw sodobnaijwng gwbang prem honai). प्रेम reused from 1:8 note. |
| ἀναγεγεννημένοι…ἐκ σπορᾶς…ἀφθάρτου διὰ λόγου ζῶντος θεοῦ (1:23) | anagegennēmenoi ek sporas aphthartou dia logou zōntos theou | born again of imperishable seed through the living word of God | New birth’s “seed” (σπορά) is the abiding, living word of God, not human ancestry | born again through the living and enduring word of God | New birth (v.3) is now given its specific instrumental means: God’s own living, abiding word | पबित्र आत्था फिन जिउनाय होनाय, गोमानाय-गैया बीजा, ईश्वरनि जिउनाय राव (see 1:3 फिन जिउनाय होनाय note); “seed” (बीजा) and “living word” (ईश्वरनि जिउनाय राव) new — High: reinforces that new birth is God’s own sovereign act through his word, never through human ancestral transmission (contrast with the ματαίας ἀναστροφῆς πατροπαραδότου of v.18). |
| τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ εὐαγγελισθὲν εἰς ὑμᾶς (1:25) | to rhēma to euangelisthen eis hymas | the word that was preached to you as good news | The specific content of apostolic proclamation, identified with the “living word” of v.23 | the good news preached/proclaimed to you | The gospel preached to the readers is identical with the eternal, living word of God | मंगल खबर [Reused — Romans TM, High]. |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τὸ λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλα (2:2) | to logikon adolon gala | the reasonable/spiritual unadulterated milk | Metaphor of infant nourishment applied to the word of God | pure spiritual milk, the unadulterated milk of the word | New believers (like “newborn infants,” ἀρτιγέννητα βρέφη) are to crave God’s word as their nourishment for growth | पबित्र आत्मानि साफ दुध (pobitro aatmani saf dudh, “the pure milk of the [word/Spirit]”). Medium: growth metaphor requiring explanation; keep distinct from any ritual nourishment-offering imagery. |
| λίθος ζῶν (2:4-5) | lithos zōn | living stone | Building-material metaphor applied paradoxically to a living person (Christ) | living stone | Christ, though rejected by men, is the foundation-stone of God’s spiritual house, and believers are joined to him as living stones themselves | जिउनाय हाथोर (jiunai hathwr, “living stone”). High: this is genuinely new embodiment-adjacent imagery. Because Bathou worship is deliberately aniconic (centered on the sijou plant, never an image or embodied form), any “stone” language applied to the divine risks two distinct misreadings: (a) resembling stone-veneration practices found in some regional folk traditions, or (b) being read as merely metaphorical/poetic rather than a real, personal, living Christ. Must be taught as figurative-but-doctrinally-real: Christ himself, alive, is the foundation; believers, joined to him, likewise become “living” (not inert, image-like) stones of a spiritual temple. |
| οἶκος πνευματικός (2:5) | oikos pneumatikos | spiritual house | Corporate metaphor: believers together constitute God’s temple/dwelling | spiritual house, spiritual temple | The corporate church, not a physical building, is where God now dwells | आत्मानि मन्दिर (aatmani mondir, “spiritual temple/house”). Medium: must be distinguished from नमासोलि, the Bathou/Kherai ritual worship site the baseline reserves exclusively for describing traditional practice. |
| ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον (2:5) | hierateuma hagion | holy priesthood | A body/company constituted as priests, set apart | holy priesthood | All believers corporately (not a specialist class) are constituted priests before God | पबित्र पुरोहितपद (pobitro purohitpod, “holy priesthood [as a corporate office/status]”). CRITICAL — see doctrine note below (2:9). |
| θυσίας πνευματικὰς εὐπροσδέκτους τῷ θεῷ διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (2:5) | thysias pneumatikas euprosdektous tō theō dia Iēsou Christou | spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ | Non-literal, Spirit-empowered offerings (praise, obedience, good works) replacing animal sacrifice | spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ | The priesthood’s “offerings” are lives of worship and obedience, not ritual animal or material offerings | आत्मानि बलि (aatmani boli, “spiritual sacrifice/offering”). High: बलि (offering/sacrifice) is precisely the term used for reciprocal ritual offerings in Bathou/Kherai practice (offerings to Bathoubwrai and the wider pantheon for protection and prosperity). Must be explicitly taught that these “sacrifices” are lives of praise and obedience mediated only through Christ, never material or animal offerings, and never a reciprocal exchange for divine favor. |
| λίθος ἀκρογωνιαῖος ἐκλεκτὸς ἔντιμος / λίθος προσκόμματος (2:6-8) | lithos akrogōniaios eklektos entimos / lithos proskommatos | chosen and precious cornerstone / stone of stumbling | Isaiah 28:16 and Psalm 118:22 combined: Christ as both foundation and, for unbelievers, an obstacle | cornerstone / stone of stumbling, rock of offense | Christ’s identity provokes a divided response: foundation for believers, stumbling block for the disobedient | सायखाव मूल्यवान बुनियादनि हाथोर / लामायाव लांगानाय हाथोर (saikhao mulyoban buniyadni hathwr / lamayao langanai hathwr). Reuses सायख (elect) [Romans TM]; new compounds — High. |
| γένος ἐκλεκτόν (2:9) | genos eklekton | chosen race/generation/people | γένος: a people-group defined by common origin/descent | chosen race, chosen people, chosen generation | Believers together constitute a single new people-group defined by God’s choice, not ethnic descent | सायखाव जाति (saikhao jati, “chosen people/race”). Medium-High: जाति is a live and sensitive category in the contemporary Bodoland region given its strong overlap with ethnic and territorial identity politics. Must be taught as a theological, trans-ethnic identity in Christ (echoing the baseline’s “unity of Jews and Gentiles” note), never assimilated into ethnic-nationalist categories. |
| βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα (2:9) | basileion hierateuma | royal priesthood | Exodus 19:6 language; βασίλειον: royal, belonging to a king | royal priesthood | All believers hold a priesthood that is also royal — direct access to God combined with royal dignity and standing, through union with the King, Christ | राजकीय पबित्र पुरोहितपद (rajkiyo pobitro purohitpod, “royal holy priesthood”). CRITICAL: this is the letter’s clearest expression of the “Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood” doctrine and requires maximal doctrinal care in the Bodo context specifically because it collides with three distinct existing specialist-religious-role categories at once: (1) the doudini, the female ritual medium who alone becomes the vessel for Bathoubwrai and the Kherai pantheon during trance; (2) the deuri/ojha, recognized ritual priest/diviner figures in Bathou village religious life; (3) Brahma Dharma’s own reorganized priestly/reform leadership structure established after 1912. In each of these existing frameworks, priesthood is a specialist minority office held by particular individuals. 1 Peter 2:9 teaches the opposite: EVERY believer, corporately and without exception, already holds this royal priesthood — there is no specialist mediating class within the church parallel to the doudini or deuri. This must be taught as explicitly, not left to be inferred, echoing the baseline’s parallel caution about “saints” not implying a devotional elite. |
| ἔθνος ἅγιον (2:9) | ethnos hagion | holy nation | A whole people set apart, again echoing Exodus 19:6 | holy nation | The church as a single, God-consecrated people-group, transcending ethnic and political nationhood | पबित्र जाति (pobitro jati, “holy nation/people”). Medium-High: same ethnic-territorial sensitivity as γένος ἐκλεκτόν above; must be explicitly distinguished from Bodoland’s contemporary territorial-political conception of Bodo nationhood, echoing the baseline’s kingdom_of_god caution. |
| λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν (2:9) | laos eis peripoiēsin | a people for [God’s own] possession | A people specially acquired/owned by God | a people for God’s own possession, a people belonging to God | Believers belong to God in a uniquely intimate, possessive sense | ईश्वरनि निजनि जाति (Isor ni niji jati, “God’s own [personal] people”). Medium. |
| ἐκ σκότους…εἰς τὸ θαυμαστὸν αὐτοῦ φῶς (2:9) | ek skotous eis to thaumaston autou phōs | out of darkness into his marvelous light | Standard biblical darkness/light contrast for conversion | out of darkness into his marvelous light | The call (φιnayaव reused) that constitutes this priestly, royal, holy people is fundamentally a rescue from spiritual darkness | फिनायाव [Reused — Romans TM, High] + “बिनि गोजान जोंनाय जों’लाव” (bini gwjan jwnnai jwlao, “into his wonderful light”). |
| πάροικοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι (2:11) | paroikoi kai parepidēmoi | aliens and sojourners/exiles | Reprise of 1:1 identity-language | sojourners and exiles, aliens and strangers | Believers’ present social location is again named explicitly as temporary and foreign relative to their true heavenly citizenship | पाहुना आरो परदेसी (pahuna aro pordeshi). परदेसी [Reused from 1:1 note above]; पाहुना (guest/temporary resident) new — same High risk profile as 1:1. |
| σαρκικαὶ ἐπιθυμίαι…κατὰ τῆς ψυχῆς (2:11) | sarkikai epithymiai kata tēs psychēs | fleshly desires…against the soul | Internal moral warfare metaphor | fleshly passions that wage war against the soul | Sin is pictured as an internal military campaign against the believer’s inner life | गुदिनि सोखाजों जिउनि बिरुं जुज्जोंनाय (gudini sokhajwng jiuni birwng jujjwngnai). जिउ reused from core-passage note (1:9). |
| ἀναστροφὴν…καλήν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν (2:12) | anastrophēn kalēn en tois ethnesin | good conduct among the Gentiles/nations | Public, observable moral behavior visible to unbelieving outsiders | good conduct/behavior among the nations | Visible, godly conduct is itself a form of witness that can turn opponents to glorify God | गैर-जुथुदनि गाबाव गोबां जिउनि चाल-चलन (goir-juthudni gabao gwbang jiuni chal-chalon). गैर-जुथुद [Reused — Romans TM, Medium]; जिउनि चाल-चलन (life’s conduct/behavior) new. High — see doctrine note below. |
| ἡμέρᾳ ἐπισκοπῆς (2:12) | hēmera episkopēs | day of visitation | The eschatological day when God “visits” (in judgment or salvation) | day of visitation, the day he visits us | The ultimate future day when God’s oversight/verdict over all human conduct becomes final | ईश्वरनि सामनाय सम (Isor ni samnai som, “the day/time of God’s visiting/inspecting”). Medium: eschatological, requires background teaching. |
| ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει (2:13) | hypotagēte pasē anthrōpinē ktisei | be subject to every human institution | ὑποτάσσω: to arrange under, to submit/place oneself under authority; a military/ordering verb, not primarily emotional | submit to, be subject to, be subordinate to every human institution/authority | Voluntary, Christlike submission to civil authority as an outworking of holy living, not coerced subjugation | अधीन जानाय (adhin janai, “becoming subordinate/submitting”). High — see doctrine note below. |
| βασιλεῖ ὡς ὑπερέχοντι / ἡγεμόσιν (2:13-14) | basilei hōs hyperechonti / hēgemosin | to the king as supreme / to governors | Civil governing authority-terms | the emperor/king as supreme, governors sent by him | Civil rulers as instituted for the punishment of evil and the praise of good | राजा / राज’नि मान्दांगोन (raja / raj ni mandangwn). Medium. |
| ἐλευθερία (2:16) | eleutheria | freedom | Liberty, especially freedom in Christ from the old way of life | freedom, liberty | Christian freedom must never become a pretext (ἐπικάλυμμα, “a covering”) for evil, but is exercised as God’s δοῦλος (slave/servant) | मुक्ति / गुबुन गैयारि थानाय (mukti). Medium: mukti here means freedom-from-bondage-to-sin, not to be confused with Brahma Dharma’s मोक्ष-style liberation (which the baseline forbids specifically as a gloss for “salvation”); keep this occurrence distinct and clarify it denotes freedom for obedient service, not release from the cycle of existence. |
| δοῦλοι θεοῦ (2:16) | douloi theou | slaves/servants of God | Willing, total belonging to a master | servants/slaves of God | True freedom is found precisely in belonging wholly to God as his servant | ईश्वरनि सेवागिरि (Isor ni sebagiri, “God’s servant/bondservant”). Medium. |
| πάντας τιμήσατε…τὸν θεὸν φοβεῖσθε…τὸν βασιλέα τιμᾶτε (2:17) | pantas timēsate…ton theon phobeisthe…ton basilea timate | honor everyone…fear God…honor the king | Four-part social/religious ethic in careful order: honor all, love the brotherhood, fear God alone, honor the king | honor everyone; love the brotherhood; fear God; honor the king | Establishes a clear hierarchy: reverent “fear” is reserved for God alone, while “honor” (a lesser term) is given to human authorities, including the king | गासै मानुषखौ सम्मान होनाय…ईश्वरखौ गिबि होनाय…राजाखौ सम्मान होनाय. High: the careful distinction between “fear” (reserved for God) and “honor” (given to human rulers) must be preserved precisely, since collapsing the two would either deify the king or under-honor legitimate civil authority — directly relevant to “Submission to Authority” doctrine. |
| οἰκέται…δεσπόταις (2:18) | oiketai…despotais | household servants…masters | Household-slave social structure of the Greco-Roman world | household servants, masters | Household servants are addressed directly regarding submission even to harsh masters | नोकर / मालिक (nokor / malik). Low-Medium: sociological, historically-conditioned category requiring explanation of the Greco-Roman household-slavery context, distinct from any endorsement of the institution itself. |
| χάρις…πάσχων ἀδίκως (2:19-20) | charis…paschōn adikōs | this is a gracious/commendable thing…suffering unjustly | χάρις used here in a distinct sense: “credit, commendable grace” before God for enduring unjust suffering | this brings [God’s] favor/is a gracious/commendable thing…suffering unjustly | Innocent, patiently-endured suffering is itself credited before God — foundational to the letter’s “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” doctrine | ईश्वरनि सिङाव मोफादांनाय दान (Isor ni singao mwphwdangnai daan)…अन्याय जों दुख हरनाय (onnyai jwng dukh hornai). मोफादांनाय दान reused; High — must be taught carefully so that patient endurance of unjust suffering is not reframed as a merit-earning good work (echoing the baseline’s grace-vs-works caution for Romans 4/11), even though it is credited by God as commendable. |
| Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν…ὑπογραμμόν (2:21) | Christos epathen hyper hymōn…hypogrammon | Christ suffered for you…leaving an example/pattern to trace | ὑπογραμμός: a writing-pattern for a student to trace/copy | Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps | Christ’s suffering is both substitutionary (ὑπέρ, “for/on behalf of”) and exemplary (a pattern for believers to imitate) — the letter’s dual Christ-suffering theology | मसीहा नोंथांनि थाखाय दुख हरबाय, नोंथांनि थाखाय बिदिन्थि गनांथाय होबाय (Mosia nwngthang ni thakhai dukh horboi, nwngthang ni thakhai bidinthi gnangthai hoboi, “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example to follow”). CRITICAL: both dimensions (substitution and imitation) must be preserved together; collapsing this to imitation alone loses the atoning “for you,” and collapsing it to substitution alone loses the letter’s call to Christlike endurance. |
| ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἐποίησεν, οὐδὲ εὑρέθη δόλος ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτοῦ (2:22) | hamartian ouk epoiēsen, oude heurethē dolos en tō stomati autou | he committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth | Isaiah 53:9 quotation affirming Christ’s sinlessness | he committed no sin; no deceit was found in his mouth | Christ’s suffering was entirely undeserved, establishing him as the perfectly righteous substitute | बे गुनाह खालामाबाय, बिनि मुखाव गोजौनाय मोनाबाय (be gunah khalamaboi, bini mukhao gwjaunai mwnaboi). गुनाह [Reused — Romans TM, High]. |
| τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν αὐτὸς ἀνήνεγκεν ἐν τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον (2:24) | tas hamartias hēmōn autos anēnegken en tō sōmati autou epi to xylon | he himself bore our sins in his body on the tree | ἀναφέρω: to carry/bear up, sacrificial-offering term; ξύλον: “tree/wood,” referring to the cross | he bore our sins in his body on the tree | The central substitutionary-atonement statement of the letter: Christ personally carried the guilt/penalty of believers’ sins on the cross | मसीहा गुदियाव जोबोर गुनाहखौ बोहबाय बांहागारि खुथियाव (Mosia gudiyao jwbwr gunahkhou bwhboi banhagari khuthiyao, “Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the wooden [cross]”). CRITICAL — see doctrine note below. |
| τῷ μώλωπι αὐτοῦ ἰάθητε (2:24) | tō mōlōpi autou iathēte | by his wound(s) you have been healed | Isaiah 53:5 quotation; μώλωψ: a bruise/wound from a blow | by his wounds you have been healed | Spiritual healing (restoration from sin’s effects) is directly grounded in Christ’s own suffering wounds | बिनि घाबखौ नोंथाङा फिटिनाय मोनबाय (bini ghabkhou nwngthanga fitinai mwnboi, “by his wound you have been healed”). High: must be taught as healing from sin’s guilt and power, not conflated with physical/ritual healing practices sought through Bathou/Kherai household or Mainao-related rites for prosperity and well-being. |
| πλανώμενοι ὡς πρόβατα…ποιμένα καὶ ἐπίσκοπον τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν (2:25) | planōmenoi hōs probata…poimena kai episkopon tōn psychōn hymōn | going astray like sheep…the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls | Isaiah 53:6 quotation combined with a pastoral title for Christ | you were going astray like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls | Christ himself, not any human ritual specialist, is the one true Shepherd-Overseer who has recovered straying believers | भेड़ा बोरै आबाद मोन’फोर, दा फिन जिउ खौरांथि आरो सांगारि जिसुनि सिङाव फैबाय (bhera bworai abad mwnfwr, da phin jiu khourangthi aro sangari Jisu ni singao phoiboi). जिउ reused (soul); “shepherd/overseer” new — Medium: reinforces Christ’s unique pastoral care over the individual, foundational for the “Elders and Humility” doctrine in Ch. 5, where human elders shepherd only as under-shepherds accountable to this one Chief Shepherd. |
Chapter 3 (3:1-22)
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν (3:1) | gynaikes hypotassomenai tois andrasin | wives being subject to [their own] husbands | Reprise of ὑποτάσσω within the household | wives, submit to your own husbands | Voluntary, Christlike wifely submission extended even to unbelieving husbands, for evangelistic effect | तिनिस्रि सिनायग्रा सिगांआव अधीन जानाय (tinisri sinaigra sigangao adhin janai). अधीन जानाय [Reused from 2:13 note] — same High risk, with the added pastoral sensitivity that submission language applied to marriage requires careful framing in light of contemporary discussions of gender roles and domestic power, so it is not misused to excuse abuse. |
| ὁ κρυπτὸς τῆς καρδίας ἄνθρωπος…πραέος καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος (3:4) | ho kryptos tēs kardias anthrōpos…praeos kai hēsychiou pneumatos | the hidden person of the heart…of a gentle and quiet spirit | Internal, invisible character contrasted with external adornment (v.3) | the hidden person of the heart, a gentle and quiet spirit | True, lasting beauty is internal moral character, not external ornamentation | गोसोनि गुदि आयदा…नरम आरो सान्थि मोन (gwswni gudi ayda…norom aro santhi mwn). Medium: “gentle and quiet spirit” must be taught as inward Christlike character, not passivity or silencing; risk of being misapplied as social suppression must be flagged for pastoral teaching alongside the text. |
| ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει (3:7) | asthenesterō skeuei | weaker vessel | Metaphor for the wife, calling for the husband’s protective honor, not domination | as the weaker vessel | Husbands are to treat wives with understanding and honor precisely because of (not despite) this description | गोहोम बर्तन (gwhwm bwrton, “weaker vessel/instrument”). Medium-High: requires careful teaching that this calls husbands to greater honor and gentleness, never to justify domination or disrespect. |
| συγκληρονόμοι χάριτος ζωῆς (3:7) | sygklēronomoi charitos zōēs | fellow heirs of the grace of life | Husband and wife share equally in the same spiritual inheritance | fellow heirs of the grace of life | Spiritual equality between husband and wife before God, despite differing social roles | जिउनि मोफादांनाय दाननि गोन्थ्रा उत्तराधिकारी (jiu ni mwphwdangnai daan ni gwnthra uttaradhikari). मोफादांनाय दान reused; उत्तराधिकार reused (from core-passage v.4 note). |
| πάσχοντες διὰ δικαιοσύνην (3:14) | paschontes dia dikaiosynēn | suffering for the sake of righteousness | Suffering that results specifically from doing what is right | suffering for righteousness’ sake | Direct statement of the letter’s central “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” doctrine, echoing the Beatitudes | धार्मिकतानि थाखाय दुख हरनाय (dharmikotani thakhai dukh hornai). धार्मिकता [Reused — Romans TM, Critical] — see doctrine note below. |
| κύριον τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν (3:15) | kyrion ton Christon hagiasate en tais kardiais hymōn | sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts | Set Christ apart as supremely holy and authoritative within one’s own inner life, as the ground for courageous, reasoned answer to opponents | in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy | Internal, settled reverence for Christ’s exclusive Lordship is the foundation for courageous public testimony under pressure | गोसोआव मसीहखौ प्रभु महर पबित्र मानोन (gwswao Mosihkhw probhu mohor pobitro manwn). प्रभु, पबित्र [Reused — Romans TM, Critical/High]. |
| ἀπολογία (3:15) | apologia | defense, reasoned answer | A formal or informal verbal defense/account given when questioned | defense, answer, account | Believers must be ready to give a reasoned, respectful defense of their hope when challenged | जबाब होनाय (jobab honai, “giving an answer/defense”). Low-Medium. |
| μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου (3:15-16) | meta prautētos kai phobou | with gentleness and fear/respect | The tone required for the “defense” above | with gentleness and respect | Christian apologetics is to be marked by humility and reverence, not aggression | नरमजों आरो गिबि होनायजों (norom-jwng aro gibi honai-jwng). Low. |
| Χριστὸς ἅπαξ ἔπαθεν περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων (3:18) | Christos hapax epathen peri hamartiōn, dikaios hyper adikōn | Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous | ἅπαξ: once, a single unrepeatable event; substitutionary structure repeated from 2:21-24 | Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous | Reaffirms the unrepeatable, substitutionary character of Christ’s atoning suffering, this time explicitly linked to what follows (proclamation to the spirits) | मसीहा मोनसे बार गुनाहनि थाखाय दुख हरबाय, धार्मिक जायखि अधार्मिकनि थाखाय (Mosia mwnse bar gunahni thakhai dukh horboi, dharmik jaikhi adharmiknni thakhai). धार्मिकता root reused; Critical — same substitutionary-suffering weight as 2:24, with the added exegetical importance of ἅπαξ (once, unrepeatable) which must not be softened into a repeatable ritual pattern. |
| θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι (3:18) | thanatōtheis sarki, zōopoiētheis pneumati | having been put to death in the flesh, made alive in the spirit | A contrast-pair describing Christ’s death and subsequent vindication/resurrection life | put to death in the flesh but made alive in/by the Spirit | Establishes the transition to Christ’s post-death, pre-glorification activity (the proclamation of v.19) within the framework of his resurrection life | गुदियाव थि जायो, आत्थायाव जिउ थायो (gudiyao thi jayw, aathayao jiu thayw, “died in the flesh, [made] alive in the Spirit”). CRITICAL: this verse pair is exegetically disputed even among Greek-language interpreters and must be flagged for human theologian review every time it is taught; the Bodo rendering must avoid implying a “soul-only” survival concept that could be assimilated to Bathou/Brahma Dharma spirit-survival frameworks, and should instead be taught alongside the letter’s clear, repeated bodily-resurrection language (जिउनाय सोलायनाय, reused throughout). |
| ἐν ᾧ…τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν (3:19) | en hō…tois en phylakē pneumasin poreutheis ekēryxen | in which…having gone, he proclaimed to the spirits in prison | φυλακή: a prison/place of confinement; πνεύματα: spirit-beings (contested identity — traditionally understood as fallen angelic beings or the disobedient dead from Noah’s generation); κηρύσσω: to proclaim/herald, often (but not exclusively) of gospel preaching | he went and proclaimed [something] to the spirits in prison | One of the most theologically disputed verses in the New Testament; in context (v.20), tied specifically to the disobedient of Noah’s generation, most likely a proclamation of Christ’s triumphant victory and judgment over these particular confined spirit-beings, not a general “second-chance” gospel offer | जेलआव थानाय आत्मासरिखौ मंग्लानाय (jail-ao thanai aatma-sori-khw manglanai, “declaring/proclaiming to the spirits who were in prison/confinement”). CRITICAL — see doctrine note below; this is the anchor term for the “Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits” doctrine and requires the most extensive comparative-religion caution in the whole letter. |
| ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε…ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε…κιβωτοῦ (3:20) | apeithēsasin pote…en hēmerais Nōe…kibōtou | who were formerly disobedient…in the days of Noah…of the ark | Historical anchor identifying which spirits: those disobedient at the time of Noah’s flood | who formerly did not obey…in the days of Noah…of the ark | Grounds the “spirits in prison” concretely in the specific historical judgment of the Flood generation, not a general population of spirits | नोहनि समाव मानोन होयाबायावसरि…जुरगा (Noh ni somao manwn hoyabaya-sori…jurga [ark]). High: requires Old Testament narrative background (the Flood, Noah, the ark) which the target audience, per the AI Requirements’ assumption of low Old Testament literacy, cannot be assumed to know; must be taught with the historical narrative supplied, not merely alluded to. |
| ὀκτὼ ψυχαί διεσώθησαν δι’ ὕδατος (3:20) | oktō psychai diesōthēsan di’ hydatos | eight souls were saved/brought safely through water | Noah’s family, saved through (not from) the flood-water | eight persons were saved/brought safely through water | Sets up the water/salvation typology that leads directly into the baptism statement of v.21 | नैथोर जिउ बर सोलायाव फोराय जायो (naithwr jiu bor solayao phoray jayw). जिउ, फोराय reused. |
| ἀντίτυπον…βάπτισμα (3:21) | antitypon…baptisma | the corresponding antitype…baptism | ἀντίτυπον: the “counterpart” or “fulfillment-pattern” corresponding to an earlier type (here, the flood-water typologically corresponds to baptism); βάπτισμα: baptism | baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you | Baptism is explicitly identified as the New Testament counterpart to the flood-waters, though Peter immediately qualifies what kind of “saving” is meant (see next entry) | बाप्तिस्मा, बे नैथोरनि जोबाब (Baptisma, be naithwr ni jwbab, “baptism, the counterpart/fulfillment of this water”). High — see doctrine note below. |
| οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐρώτημα εἰς θεόν (3:21) | ou sarkos apothesis rypou alla syneidēseōs agathēs erōtēma eis theon | not a removal of dirt from the flesh but an appeal/pledge of a good conscience toward God | Peter’s own immediate clarification: baptism’s saving significance is not physical/ritual cleansing but an inward covenantal appeal/pledge to God | not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience | Directly rules out reading baptism as a merely external washing/purification ritual | गुदिनि गोसां साफनाय नङा, गोबां विवेकनि थाखाय ईश्वरखौ मिनतिनाय (gudi ni gwsang safnai nwnga, gwbang bibek ni thakhai Isorkhw minotinai, “not the cleansing of the body’s dirt, but an appeal to God for a good conscience”). साफनाय [Reused — Romans TM, distinguishing term for ritual cleansing]; विवेक (conscience) new — High: Peter’s own text pre-empts exactly the misreading the baseline consistently warns against elsewhere — that a religious washing rite functions like the ritual purification performed before Bathou/Kherai ceremonies. This clarifying half of the verse must never be omitted or softened in teaching; it is the safeguard against baptismal-ritualism. |
| δι’ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (3:21) | di’ anastaseōs Iēsou Christou | through the resurrection of Jesus Christ | Baptism’s saving significance is grounded entirely in Christ’s resurrection, echoing 1:3 | through the resurrection of Jesus Christ | Ties baptism’s meaning directly back to the letter’s opening thesis (living hope through the resurrection) | जिउनाय सोलायनाय [Reused — Romans TM, Critical]. |
| ἐν δεξιᾷ θεοῦ…ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων (3:22) | en dexia theou…angelōn kai exousiōn kai dynameōn | at the right hand of God…angels and authorities and powers | Christ’s exaltation to the position of supreme honor/authority, with all spiritual powers subordinated under him | at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subjected to him | The proclamation to the imprisoned spirits (v.19) and Christ’s present universal supremacy over all spiritual beings are linked — Christ’s authority extends over the entire spirit-world | ईश्वरनि गामिनि ओथिंगाव, स्वर्गदूत आरो अधिकार आरो सक्तिसरि बिनि सिङाव मानोन जाबाय (Isor ni gami ni othingao, sworgodut aro adhikar aro sakti-sori bini singao manwn jaboi). High: this verse’s totalizing claim — that Christ has supreme, subjugating authority over EVERY spiritual power, named and unnamed — is the single most direct and pastorally useful verse in 1 Peter for confronting the entire populated Bathou/Kherai spirit-world (nature-spirits, ancestral spirits, the wider pantheon addressed through the doudini) at once. Should be taught explicitly as such: Christ’s authority is not one power among the spirit-world’s many powers but supreme over all of them without exception. |

| Χριστοῦ παθόντος σαρκί…πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας (4:1) | Christou pathontos sarki…pepautai hamartias | Christ having suffered in the flesh…has ceased from sin | Suffering-with-Christ produces a decisive break from sin’s ongoing dominion | since Christ suffered in the flesh…has ceased from sin | Believers are to “arm” themselves with Christ’s own suffering-mindset as the means of breaking with sin | मसीहा गुदियाव दुख हरबाय…गुनाहनिफ्राय जोबोन जाबाय (Mosia gudiyao dukh horboi…gunah ni fray jwbwn jaboi). गुनाह reused. |
| ἀσωτίαις, ἐπιθυμίαις, οἰνοφλυγίαις, κώμοις, πότοις, εἰδωλολατρίαις (4:3) | asōtiais, epithymiais, oinophlygiais, kōmois, potois, eidōlolatriais | debauchery, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, idolatry | A vice-list summarizing the readers’ pre-conversion Gentile lifestyle | sensuality, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, idolatry | Names the specific pattern of life believers have decisively left, provoking hostility from former associates | गुबुन गुनाहनि जिउथाय (गासैनाव, गासैसोर, मुद पानाय, बांथिनि पुजा) — grouped vice-list, minor terms not individually glossed. Medium: εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry) specifically must be taught as directly applicable to household sijou-plant devotion and Kherai puja participation, not left abstract. |
| ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (4:5) | zōntas kai nekrous | the living and the dead | Universal scope of final judgment | the living and the dead | All people, whether alive or already dead at Christ’s return, will be held accountable | जिउनाय आरो गोथानि फैसला (jiunai aro gwtha ni foisola). High: reuses जिउनाय; फैसला (judgment) new — must be taught as a personal, moral divine verdict, never an impersonal karmic reckoning of the kind Brahma Dharma’s reformed ethic emphasizes. |
| νεκροῖς εὐηγγελίσθη…κατὰ ἀνθρώπους σαρκί…κατὰ θεὸν πνεύματι (4:6) | nekrois euēngelisthē…kata anthrōpous sarki…kata theon pneumati | the gospel was preached even to the dead…that they might live according to God in the spirit | A difficult, disputed verse; most naturally read together with 3:19 as referring to a proclamation received by those now dead while they were still alive | the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead | Explains why the gospel came even to those who have since died — so that, though judged in the flesh by human standards, they might live in accordance with God in the spirit | गोथासोरनो मंगल खबर सोमोन्दो जायो (gwthasorwno mangal khobor somondo jayw, “the gospel was proclaimed even to those [now] dead”). मंगल खबर [Reused]. CRITICAL: must be flagged for human theologian review every occurrence; the Bodo rendering must not be read as endorsing a post-mortem “second chance” for salvation, nor assimilated to any ancestor-spirit-communication framework recognizable from Bathou household veneration of बुरहा-बुरही आत्था (ancestral spirits), which the baseline separately forbids as a rendering for the Holy Spirit. |
| πάντων τὸ τέλος ἤγγικεν (4:7) | pantōn to telos ēngiken | the end of all things has drawn near | Imminent eschatological expectation | the end of all things is at hand/near | Grounds sober, watchful, prayerful living in the nearness of the final consummation | गासै जायखिनि जोबथार सम गोहोमबाय होबाय (gasai jaikhini jwbthar som gwhwmboi hoboi). Reuses सिमान्तनि सम concept (last time) from core-passage note. |
| ἀγάπη καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν (4:8) | agapē kalyptei plēthos hamartiōn | love covers a multitude of sins | Proverbial statement (echoing Prov 10:12) on love’s reconciling power within the church | love covers a multitude of sins | Fervent mutual love (reprised from 1:22) actively overcomes and forgives the many sins believers commit against one another | प्रेमजों गोबां गुनाहखौ बासनाय (premjwng gwbang gunahkhw basnai). प्रेम, गुनाह reused. |
| ἕκαστος…χάρισμα…οἰκονόμοι ποικίλης χάριτος θεοῦ (4:10) | hekastos…charisma…oikonomoi poikilēs charitos theou | each one…a gift…stewards of God’s varied grace | Individualized Spirit-gifting for corporate benefit, held in trust | each has received a gift…good stewards of God’s varied grace | Every believer is entrusted with Spirit-given gifts to serve others, as an accountable steward, not an owner | आत्मानि दान [Reused — Romans TM, Medium]; “steward” new: मोफादांनाय दाननि रखालदार (mwphwdangnai daan ni rokhaldar, “steward/caretaker of grace”). Medium. |
| λόγια θεοῦ (4:11) | logia theou | oracles of God | Authoritative divine utterances | the very words of God, oracles of God | Any speaking-ministry in the church is to be exercised with the gravity of speaking God’s own words | ईश्वरनि रा’ (Isor ni ra, “God’s word/utterance”). Medium: must be distinguished from the divinatory pronouncements attributed to a doudini in Kherai trance or an ओझा in folk-ritual practice — this is careful, Scripture-grounded speech, not spontaneous oracular utterance. |
| τῇ πυρώσει…πρὸς πειρασμὸν (4:12) | tē pyrōsei…pros peirasmon | the fiery ordeal…for testing | Metaphor of a smelting-fire trial, reprising 1:6-7’s refining imagery | the fiery trial…to test you | Persecution is to be expected as a normal, purposeful, non-strange part of Christian life, not a surprising anomaly | मुयजों परीक्षा (moijwng porikša). परीक्षा reused from core-passage note. |
| κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν (4:13) | koinōneite tois tou Christou pathēmasin | you share/participate in the sufferings of Christ | κοινωνία-root: genuine participation/fellowship, here specifically in suffering | you share in Christ’s sufferings, you participate in Christ’s sufferings | Present suffering is reframed as genuine participatory fellowship with the suffering Christ, not mere hardship | मसीहनि दुखाव गोसो जोंथानाय (Mosih ni dukhao gwsw jwnthanai). गोसो जोंथानाय [Reused — Romans TM, Low]. |
| τὸ τῆς δόξης πνεῦμα ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἀναπαύεται (4:14) | to tēs doxēs pneuma eph’ hymas anapauetai | the Spirit of glory rests upon you | Unique title combining Spirit and glory, associated specifically with being reproached for Christ’s name | the Spirit of glory rests upon you | The Holy Spirit’s own glorious presence specially attends believers suffering reproach for Christ’s sake | महिमानि पबित्र आत्था नोंथांनि सिङाव थायो (mohima ni pobitro aatha nwngthang ni singao thayw). महिमा, पबित्र आत्था [Reused — Critical]. |
| Χριστιανός (4:16) | Christianos | Christian | The believer’s identity-name derived from Christ | Christian | Suffering “as a Christian” is grounds for glorifying God in that specific name, not shame | मसीहि (Mosihi). [Reused convention — Romans doctrine registry uses “मसीहि” for “Christian” throughout christian_identity_in_christ and christian_fellowship entries]. High: must be taught as a name that brings glory to God when borne under reproach, echoing but going beyond the baseline’s general “Christian identity in Christ” doctrine notes about identity located in union with Christ rather than clan or ethnic-territorial belonging. |
| τὸ κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ (4:17) | to krima apo tou oikou tou theou | judgment beginning from the household of God | God’s own household (the church) is judged/refined first, before final judgment falls on the disobedient world | judgment begins with the household of God | Present suffering functions as a purifying, disciplinary form of judgment upon God’s own people, distinguished from final condemnation | फैसला ईश्वरनि निजि मोन्दिनिफ्राय सुरु जायो (foisola Isor ni niji mwndini-fray suru jayw). High: फैसला (judgment) reused from 4:5; must be distinguished from the disciplinary, purifying judgment of God’s own household versus the final condemning judgment awaiting “those who do not obey the gospel of God” mentioned in the same verse. |
| πιστῷ κτίστῃ (4:19) | pistō ktistē | to a faithful Creator | God named specifically as Creator, and specifically as faithful/trustworthy | to a faithful Creator | Suffering believers are to entrust themselves entirely to God precisely as the one who both made them and can be trusted | बिश्वासजाथाव सृष्टिकर्ता (biswasjathao srishtikorta, “a trustworthy/faithful Creator”). Medium: सृष्टिकर्ता (Sanskrit loan, “Creator”) must be taught as the personal, faithful, covenant-keeping Creator of Romans-style theology, not an impersonal creator-principle; echoes the baseline’s caution under “father.” |
Chapter 5 (5:1-14)
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bodo Rendering (Risk) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβυτέρους…συμπρεσβύτερος (5:1) | presbyterous…sympresbyteros | elders…fellow elder | πρεσβύτερος: literally “older man,” but here a specific recognized office of local church leadership; Peter identifies himself as a “fellow elder” | elders…a fellow elder | The letter’s direct address to the office responsible for local church oversight, with Peter identifying as a peer, not a superior | मण्डलीनि प्राचीन…गोन्थ्रा प्राचीन (mwndoli ni prachin…gwnthra prachin). CRITICAL: this new church-office term requires an explicit forbidden-substitution note parallel to the baseline’s treatment of “Lord.” Bathou and Kherai tradition applies honorific elder-titles — बर’ऐ/बुरहा (“great old one”) — specifically to Bathoubwrai and the wider pantheon of elder-deities; the baseline already forbids these titles for both “Lord” and, by extension, “Father.” The same forbidden-substitution logic must extend to the church office of elder: प्राचीन (a Sanskrit-loan term for “elder/ancient,” used in comparable regional Bible-translation convention, e.g., Hindi) is deliberately preferred over any native honorific elder-title, so that recognized human church leaders are never linguistically assimilated to the honored elder-deity figures of the Bathou pantheon. This distinction should be taught explicitly to every leadership-training audience using this curriculum, not left implicit. |
| μάρτυς τῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθημάτων (5:1) | martys tōn tou Christou pathēmatōn | a witness of the sufferings of Christ | Eyewitness testimony credential | a witness of Christ’s sufferings | Peter grounds his authority to exhort elders in his own eyewitness experience of Christ’s suffering | मसीहनि दुखनि गिबि साक्ष्यदाता (Mosih ni dukh ni gibi sakshyodata). Medium. |
| κοινωνὸς τῆς…δόξης (5:1) | koinōnos tēs…doxēs | a partaker/sharer of the glory [to be revealed] | Shared future participation in Christ’s glory | a partaker of the glory that is to be revealed | Peter’s own hope rests on the same future glory promised to all suffering believers | महिमानि गोन्थ्रा भागी (mohima ni gwnthra bhagi — here “bhagi/partaker” as a shared-participant noun, NOT the fate/luck sense भागी flagged elsewhere in the baseline). महिमा reused; note: this is a homograph risk worth flagging explicitly — the same Bodo word भागी can mean either “a sharer/partaker” (the sense needed here) or “fate/fortune” (the sense the baseline forbids for election/providence). Translators must disambiguate by context or choose a distinct compound (e.g., “महिमा मोनगारा,” “one who will receive glory”) to avoid the fate-reading altogether. High, flagged for this specific lexical-ambiguity reason. |
| ποιμάνατε τὸ ἐν ὑμῖν ποίμνιον τοῦ θεοῦ (5:2) | poimanate to en hymin poimnion tou theou | shepherd the flock of God among you | Pastoral-care verb applied to the local congregation, described as belonging to God, not to the elder | shepherd the flock of God that is among you | Elders exercise derived, accountable care over a flock that remains God’s own possession | ईश्वरनि भेड़ामाइयखौ सांगारनाय (Isor ni bheramaikhw sangarnai, “shepherding God’s flock”). Medium: reinforces that the “flock” belongs to God, not to the elder personally — important corrective against any specialist-ritual-authority framing parallel to the doudini or deuri’s perceived personal ritual power. |
| μὴ ἀναγκαστῶς ἀλλὰ ἑκουσίως…μηδὲ αἰσχροκερδῶς ἀλλὰ προθύμως…μηδ’ ὡς κατακυριεύοντες…ἀλλὰ τύποι γινόμενοι (5:2-3) | mē anagkastōs alla hekousiōs…mēde aischrokerdōs alla prothymōs…mēd’ hōs katakyrieuontes…alla typoi ginomenoi | not under compulsion but willingly…not for shameful gain but eagerly…not domineering but becoming examples | Three paired contrasts defining godly eldership against its corruptions: coercion vs. willingness, greed vs. eagerness, domination vs. example | not under compulsion, but willingly; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering, but as examples | Elders lead by willing service and personal example, never by coercion, financial exploitation, or authoritarian control | मानोन जाथावनाय नङा गोसोजों, सम्पद मोननायनि थाखाय नङा गोबां रोखोमजों, मानसिखौ सासननाय नङा गनांथाय जायो (manwn jathawnai nwnga gwswjwng, sompod mwnnaini thakhai nwnga gwbang rokhomjwng, manwsikhw sasannai nwnga gnangthai jayw). High: this triad is the doctrine of “Elders and Humility” in its most concrete practical form and must be preserved fully — especially the domination/example contrast, given the risk of church leadership being unconsciously modeled on ritual-specialist authority patterns (doudini, deuri/ojha) recognized as socially prominent and commanding in traditional Bodo religious life. |
| φανερωθέντος τοῦ ἀρχιποίμενος…ἀμαράντινον στέφανον τῆς δόξης (5:4) | phanerōthentos tou archipoimenos…amarantinon stephanon tēs doxēs | when the Chief Shepherd appears…the unfading crown of glory | ἀρχιποίμην: the supreme, singular Shepherd over all under-shepherds — a hapax legomenon (unique to this verse) in the NT | when the Chief Shepherd is revealed…the unfading crown of glory | Elders serve accountably to Christ, the one supreme Chief Shepherd, whose future appearing will bring the reward already secured in 1:4’s imperishable inheritance | बर भेड़ा सांगारि जिसु प्रकास होनाय समाव, महिमानि गोमानाय-गैया मुकुट (bor bhera sangari Jisu prokash honai somao, mohima ni gwmanai-gaiya mukuth). Medium: reuses गोमानाय-गैया (unfading) from 1:4’s ἀμάραντος; महिमा, प्रकास होनाय reused. |
| νεώτεροι ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις (5:5) | neōteroi hypotagēte presbyterois | younger ones, be subject to elders | Reprise of ὑποτάσσω, now within the church’s internal generational structure | you who are younger, be subject to the elders | Structural, respectful submission within the congregation to recognized eldership | गोदा-गोसारसिखौ प्राचीनसिनि सिगांआव अधीन जानाय (godagwsari-sikhw prachin-sini sigangao adhin janai). अधीन जानाय, प्राचीन reused. |
| πάντες…τὴν ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε (5:5) | pantes…tēn tapeinophrosynēn egkombōsasthe | all of you, clothe yourselves with humility | ἐγκομβόομαι: to tie on, as a slave’s apron; ταπεινοφροσύνη: lowliness of mind, humility | clothe yourselves with humility toward one another | The letter’s climactic call to mutual humility, pictured as a servant’s garment deliberately put on, addressed to the whole congregation, not elders alone | गासै मानोनसिनि गोहोमथिनायखौ बुदुम-जों गोन्नाय गनां (gasai manwnsi ni gwhwmthinaikhw budumjwng gwnnai gnang, “all must tie on humility like a garment”). गोहोमथिनाय — see doctrine note below. High. |
| ὁ θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν (5:5) | ho theos hyperēphanois antitassetai, tapeinois de didōsin charin | God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble | Proverbs 3:34 quotation | God opposes/resists the proud but gives grace to the humble | Grounds the call to humility in God’s own settled disposition toward pride and lowliness | ईश्वरा गर्बिनि बिरुं जायो, बिनार गोहोमथिनाय मानुषखौ मोफादांनाय दान होयो (Isora gorbini birwng jayw, binar gwhwmthinai manwsikhw mwphwdangnai daan hoyw). मोफादांनाय दान reused. |
| ταπεινώθητε…ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ θεοῦ (5:6) | tapeinōthēte…hypo tēn krataian cheira tou theou | humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God | Old Testament idiom for submission to God’s sovereign, powerful dealings | humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand | Voluntary self-humbling before God’s own sovereign power, with the promise of future exaltation | ईश्वरनि सक्तिनि गामिनि थाखाय गोहोम जानाय (Isor ni sakti ni gami ni thakhai gwhwm janai). ईश्वरनि सक्ति reused. |
| πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν…ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπ’ αὐτόν, ὅτι αὐτῷ μέλει περὶ ὑμῶν (5:7) | pasan tēn merimnan epiripsantes ep’ auton, hoti autō melei peri hymōn | casting all your anxiety on him, because he cares about you | Vivid “throwing” verb (ἐπιρίπτω) for anxiety, grounded in God’s personal, active concern | casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you | Practical outworking of humility before God: entrusting worry to a God who personally cares, not an indifferent or fate-determined universe | जबरनाय गासैखौ बिनि सिङाव फेलनाय, बिथाङा नोंथांनि थाखाय सोमोन्दो खालामो (jwbwrnai gasaikhw bini singao felnai, bithanga nwngthang ni thakhai somondo khalamw). Medium: reinforces ईश्वरनि सामलानाय (providence) [Reused — Romans TM, High] — God’s personal care, never भागी (impersonal fate). |
| ὁ ἀντίδικος ὑμῶν διάβολος ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος περιπατεῖ ζητῶν τινα καταπιεῖν (5:8) | ho antidikos hymōn diabolos hōs leōn ōryomenos peripatei zētōn tina katapiein | your adversary the devil, like a roaring lion, walks about seeking someone to devour | διάβολος: “the slanderer/accuser,” the personal, singular adversary of believers; vivid predator-imagery | your adversary the devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour | Names a specific, personal, singular malevolent spiritual adversary actively opposing believers | नोंथांनि बिरुंथिग्रा शैतान भेरा बोरैसो गुरुगुरु सोलाय बांगिरनाय जों बेंगेरगायो, जायखौबो जोगायनोगोन नागिरो (nwngthang ni birwngthigra Shaitan bhera-bworai-so gurugurusolai bangirnai jwng bengergaiyw, jaikhwbw jwgainwgwn nagirw). HIGH: शैतान (Shaitan, a widely attested loanword across South Asian Christian and Islamic tradition for “the devil/Satan”) is deliberately chosen over any generic देउ (spirit-being) term, following the exact forbidden-substitution logic the baseline establishes for the Holy Spirit (never bare देउ/आत्था). The devil must be taught as ONE specific, personal, malevolent being under Christ’s supreme authority (see 3:22’s note on Christ’s supremacy over all spiritual powers), never as one spirit among the wide, largely ambivalent or protective, populated spirit-world of Bathou nature-spirits and ancestral spirits, nor as a being who might be approached, propitiated, or negotiated with the way the Kherai pantheon is approached through offerings or the doudini’s mediation. |
| ἀντίστητε στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει (5:9) | antistēte stereoi tē pistei | resist him, firm/solid in your faith | στερεός: solid, firm, unmoving | resist him, firm in your faith | Believers actively and confidently resist the devil, grounded in settled trust in Christ, not fear or ritual counter-measures | बिनि बिरुं थ्रान जानाय, बिश्वासाव मोनथिर थानाय (bini birwng thran janai, biswasao mwnthir thanai). बिश्वास reused. Medium: must be taught as resistance grounded in faith in Christ’s supremacy, not through any ritual counter-magic, protective charm, or appeal to another spirit-power for defense — a genuinely live pastoral concern given existing household protective practices. |
| ὁ θεὸς πάσης χάριτος…καλέσας…εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον αὐτοῦ δόξαν…αὐτὸς καταρτίσει, στηρίξει, σθενώσει, θεμελιώσει (5:10) | ho theos pasēs charitos…kalesas…eis tēn aiōnion autou doxan…autos katartisei, stērixei, sthenōsei, themeliōsei | the God of all grace…who has called…to his eternal glory…will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, establish [you] | Four strong future-tense verbs of divine restoration, following a brief period of suffering | the God of all grace…who has called you to his eternal glory…will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you | The letter’s benedictory climax: God’s own multi-dimensional restoring action guaranteed after present suffering, tying together grace, calling, glory, and providence | सर्बो मोफादांनाय दाननि ईश्वर… [Reused — Romans TM, Critical/High]. |
| ἡ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι συνεκλεκτή (5:13) | hē en Babylōni syneklektē | she who is in Babylon, chosen together [with you] | Symbolic code-name (widely understood as referring to Rome, the imperial capital, evoking Old Testament Babylon’s role as an oppressive world-power) | she who is in Babylon, chosen together with you | Peter writes from the seat of imperial power, itself styled after Old Testament Babylon, reinforcing the letter’s exile/sojourner theme | बाबिलोन (Babilon, proper name, symbolic). Medium: requires explicit teaching that “Babylon” here is a symbolic code-name for Rome, not a literal geographic claim, to avoid confusion with the historical Mesopotamian city and to reinforce (rather than contradict) the letter’s sojourner/exile theology of 1:1 and 2:11. |
