Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John (Bodo)
0. Methodology and Compliance Note
This document extends, and never contradicts, the Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json) and the John-specific 07_semantic_analysis.md / 08_core_glossary.md already produced in this pipeline. All Bodo term renderings cited below are reused exactly from those sources; no new renderings are introduced in this document except where explicitly marked [NEW — for confirmation].
Citation normalization rule (applies throughout this document and all downstream Phase 2 output):
Format: BookName Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Isaiah 53:1, John 3:14).
Use full standard English book names, no abbreviations, no periods.
Verse ranges use a hyphen (John 3:1-21); non-contiguous verses use commas (Isaiah 6:9,10); cross-chapter ranges use a colon on both ends (John 18:1-19:42).
This format matches the citation convention already established in the Romans baseline package and must remain identical across both curricula so that cross-references resolve identically in any downstream tooling (e.g., YouVersion-style linking).
Full-book coverage note: every chapter of John (1-21) is represented below. Chapters or verse-ranges with no OT quotation/allusion beyond material already logged in an earlier chapter are marked [Reviewed — no new OT connection] rather than omitted.
PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix
Columns: Passage (John) | Theme (curriculum doctrine or supporting theme) | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity
Chapter 1 — Prologue and Early Testimony
Passage
Theme
Related Character
OT/NT Connection
Translation Sensitivity
John 1:1
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
The Word (Logos)
Genesis 1:1 (structural echo, “In the beginning”)
Critical — राव (Word) names a genuine conceptual gap; must never be linked to any Bathou creation account or to the sijou plant as an object of aniconic worship.
John 1:1-3
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
The Word
Proverbs 8:22-31 (personified Wisdom, allusion, not quotation)
High — background allusion only; teach as typological resonance, not a direct quotation requiring verbatim consistency.
John 1:14
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Incarnation
The Word
Exodus 25:8; Exodus 40:34-35 (tabernacle/glory dwelling among Israel)
Critical — “dwelt/tabernacled” must be taught as permanent personal indwelling in true humanity, not confused with the sijou plant as the locus of Bathoubwrai’s presence (baseline Incarnation forbidden-substitution rule applies).
John 1:17
(supports Grace; Law)
Moses
Exodus 20:1-17 (the Law given through Moses)
Medium — reuses baseline बिथान; contrast grace/truth with law explicitly.
John 1:23
Fulfillment of Prophecy
John the Baptist
Isaiah 40:3 (direct quotation, “voice of one crying in the wilderness”)
High — must render as fulfilled written prophecy, never as divinatory utterance (ओझा/doudini contrast already established in baseline).
John 1:29,36
Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
John the Baptist; Lamb of God
Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (lamb led to slaughter); Genesis 22:8 (God will provide a lamb)
Critical — carries forward the baseline’s “Lamb of God” caution: must be taught as Christ’s own once-for-all substitutionary sacrifice, decisively not a repeatable appeasement offering paralleling Bathou/Kherai household animal rites.
John 1:32-33
The Holy Spirit as Counselor (background)
John the Baptist
Genesis 1:2 (Spirit hovering over the waters); Isaiah 11:2 (Spirit resting on the Messiah)
High — पबित्र आत्था descending and resting; must not be illustrated by doudini trance-descent imagery.
John 1:21,45
Messianic Promise
Philip; John the Baptist
Deuteronomy 18:15,18 (a prophet like Moses)
Critical — reuses baseline मसीह; the “prophet like Moses” category must not be assimilated to भाबिष्यत सोंग्रा in a way that flattens Christ into one prophet among many.
John 1:49
Sonship of Christ; Messianic Promise
Nathanael
2 Samuel 7:14; Psalm 2:7 (royal sonship)
Critical — reuses baseline ईश्वरनि गोरा; royal-messianic sonship, not a lesser spirit-being’s offspring.
John 1:51
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (typology)
Jacob
Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder)
High — typological; requires explicit Old Testament narrative background given assumed low OT literacy.
Chapter 2 — The First Sign; Cleansing the Temple

OT/NT Connection
Translation Sensitivity
John 2:17
Christ’s mission; zeal for God’s house
Jesus; disciples
Psalm 69:9 (direct quotation, “zeal for your house has consumed me”)
High — shared quotation family with Romans 15:3, which quotes Psalm 69:9 also; see Part D below for the required consistency rule.
John 2:19-21
Deity of Christ; Christ’s body as true temple (typology)
High — Bathou worship is aniconic and has no built temple; both poles of the comparison (Jerusalem temple, Christ’s body) require explanatory framing rather than a search for a native equivalent (see 08_core_glossary.md, मंदिर entry).
Chapter 3 — The Core Passage: New Birth (John 3:1-21) and Supplement (3:22-36)
Passage

John 3:3,5,7
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Nicodemus
Ezekiel 36:25-27 (new heart, new spirit, cleansing water); Isaiah 44:3 (Spirit poured out)
Critical — the doctrinal center of the curriculum; आत्मानिफ्राय नोतुन जोनोम must never collapse into फिन जोनोम (Brahma Dharma rebirth/reincarnation language, forbidden in the baseline).
John 3:8
The New Birth (Spirit/wind wordplay)
Nicodemus
(no direct OT quotation; conceptual link to Ezekiel 37:9-14, breath/spirit giving life to dry bones)
Critical — see 07_semantic_analysis.md बार/five-elements collision note; mandatory translator’s footnote required at every occurrence of this wordplay.
John 3:13-14
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Christ’s Substitutionary Death (typology)
Moses; Son of Man
Numbers 21:4-9 (the bronze serpent lifted up)
Critical — explicit Old Testament type; requires full narrative background teaching.
John 3:16
God’s Love for the World; Substitutionary Death (allusion)
Critical — ईश्वरनि क्रोध must be taught as righteous judicial response, the mirror-image risk to “grace” already flagged in the baseline.

John 4:5-6
(background)
Jacob; the Samaritan woman
Genesis 33:19; 48:22 (Jacob’s well/field at Shechem)
Low — narrative background only.
John 4:9,20-22
(supports Unity of Jews/Gentiles-adjacent theme; True Worship)
Samaritan woman
Deuteronomy 12:5-14 (background, chosen place of worship); 2 Kings 17:24-41 (Samaritan origins)
Medium — historical/ethnic background required for a low-OT-literacy audience; do not conflate with contemporary Bodo ethnic-territorial sensitivities (parallel caution already logged in the Romans baseline for “gentiles” and “kingdom of God”).
John 4:25-26
Messianic Promise; Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Samaritan woman
Deuteronomy 18:15 (Messiah/Taheb expectation)
Critical — reuses baseline मसीह.
John 4:42
Eternal Life; God’s Love for the World
Samaritans
(no direct OT quotation; universal-scope theme)
Critical — जगतनि फोरायग्रा (“Savior of the world”); see 07/08 for the baseline’s caution against a protector-deity misreading.

Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Jesus; Jewish leaders
(no OT quotation; theological claim)
Critical — ईश्वरजों समान; direct reinforcement of full co-equal deity.
John 5:39,45-47
Fulfillment of Prophecy
Moses
Deuteronomy 18:15; the Pentateuch generally (“Moses wrote of me”)
High — requires explicit teaching that the whole Old Testament witnesses to Christ; low-OT-literacy audience needs this claim unpacked, not assumed.
John 5:29
Resurrection; Judgment
—
Daniel 12:2 (resurrection of life / resurrection of judgment, background)
Critical — combines जिउनाय सोलायनाय (baseline) with the new बिसार term; see 08_core_glossary.md entry #26.

Exodus 16:4,15; Psalm 78:24 (manna)
High — manna typology requires explicit Old Testament narrative background.
John 6:45
New Birth; Effectual Calling
—
Isaiah 54:13 (direct quotation, “they will all be taught by God”)
High — connects to baseline’s ईश्वरनि सायख (election) and the John-specific “draw” (टानाय) term; avoid भागी (fate) misreading.
High — जिउनाय दैथाय (living water) explicitly identified with the Spirit at 7:39; must not be confused with any ritual water use in Bathou/Kherai practice.
John 7:42
Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant
crowd
Micah 5:2; 2 Samuel 7:12 (Bethlehem, seed of David)

Low — legal-background allusion.
John 8:56
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Messianic Promise
High — allusion; note the parallel to Romans 4:3’s direct quotation of Genesis 15:6 concerning Abraham’s faith — same patriarch, different OT text; see Part D.
John 8:58
Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; The Seven “I Am” Statements
Jesus
Exodus 3:14 (the divine name, “I AM WHO I AM”)
Critical — direct echo of the divine self-naming; mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
High — shepherd typology; Ezekiel 34 specifically contrasts God’s true shepherding with Israel’s failed human shepherds, directly relevant to teaching Christ’s shepherd claim as fulfillment, not mere metaphor.
John 10:30
Unity of the Father and the Son
Jesus
(no OT quotation; theological claim)
Critical — the founding text for this doctrine; see 07/08.
John 10:34-36
Deity of Christ (defense)
Jesus
Psalm 82:6 (direct quotation, “I said, you are gods”)
Medium — a rabbinic qal va-chomer (lesser-to-greater) argument; requires careful teaching so it is not misread as diminishing Christ’s unique deity.

Messianic Promise; Kingdom
Jesus
Zechariah 9:9 (direct quotation, “your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt”)

John 12:27
Christ’s Substitutionary Death
Jesus
Psalm 42:5-6; Psalm 6:3 (soul troubled, allusion)
Medium — allusion to lament-psalm language; conveys the genuine human anguish of the incarnate Son.
John 12:34
Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant (background)
crowd
Psalm 89:36-37; Isaiah 9:7 (the Messiah’s reign without end, background)

Isaiah (narrator’s citation)
Isaiah 53:1 (direct quotation, “Lord, who has believed our report?”)
Critical — shared quotation with Romans 10:16; see Part D for the mandatory consistency rule.
Critical — same quotation-family as Romans 11:8’s composite Deuteronomy 29:4/Isaiah 29:10 citation; both address judicial blinding — theologically parallel but textually distinct; do not conflate the two Old Testament source verses when writing lesson cross-references.
John 12:41
Deity of Christ; Glory

John 13:34-35
God’s Love for the World (new commandment)

Leviticus 19:18 (background, “love your neighbor”)
High — deliberately distinguished from बिथान (Mosaic Law, baseline); see 07/08 आदेश entry.
Chapter 14 — Way, Truth, Life; the Counselor Promised
High — Israel-as-vine is a major, recurring OT prophetic image, always describing Israel’s failure to bear fruit; Christ as “the true vine” is a direct fulfillment claim requiring this OT background to land with any force.
John 15:25
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
—
Psalm 35:19; Psalm 69:4 (direct quotation, “they hated me without a cause”)
Medium — note again the recurrence of Psalm 69, already cross-referenced at John 2:17 and John 19:28/Romans 15:3; treat Psalm 69 as a single tracked OT source spanning multiple John and Romans citations (see Part D).

John 17:11,21-22
Unity of the Father and the Son

Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
महिमा (baseline).
PART D — Parallels to Romans and Rendering-Consistency Rules
John and Romans share several Old Testament citations and closely related doctrinal categories. Because both curricula draw on the same underlying translation memory, the following consistency rules are mandatory for Phase 2 processing whenever a segment in either curriculum touches these shared texts.
D.1 Shared Old Testament Quotations
OT Text
Used in Romans
Used in John
Shared Doctrine
Consistency Rule
Isaiah 53:1
Romans 10:16
John 12:38
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Universal Human Accountability
Both curricula quote this verse to make the same point (the message proclaimed but not believed). The Bodo rendering of Isaiah 53:1 must be identical in both curricula’s lesson materials. Load from the printed Bodo Bible OT text directly; do not re-translate from English/Greek independently in either curriculum.
These are textually distinct Old Testament sources making a closely related theological point (judicial blinding/hardening). Do NOT conflate the two OT source citations when writing cross-reference notes; each must cite its own correct verse per the normalization rule in Part 0. The shared doctrine (बिसार / judgment as God’s righteous, personal verdict, never भागी/fate) must be taught consistently across both curricula.
Psalm 69 (multiple verses)
Romans 15:3 (Psalm 69:9)
John 2:17 (Psalm 69:9); John 15:25 (Psalm 69:4); John 19:28-29 (Psalm 69:21)
Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Christ’s mission
Psalm 69 is quoted four times across the two curricula’s combined scope. Treat Psalm 69 as a single tracked messianic-lament psalm; ensure the Bodo Bible’s existing Psalm 69 wording is used verbatim at every occurrence rather than independently re-rendered per curriculum.
Same patriarch (Abraham), different Old Testament texts. Do not present John 8:56 as “the same verse” as Romans 4:3 in teaching notes — it is a distinct allusion to Abraham’s joy, not the imputed-righteousness text. Keep दानै लाबोनाय धार्मिकता (baseline, imputed righteousness) strictly tied to Genesis 15:6/Romans 4:3; do not extend it to John 8:56.
2 Samuel 7:12-16; Micah 5:2
Romans 1:3 (“seed of David,” background)
John 7:42 (direct appeal, “the Christ comes from the seed of David, from Bethlehem”)
Davidic Covenant; Messianic Promise
Reuse baseline दाऊदनि बेंसे (seed of David) and दाऊद (David) exactly in both curricula. This is the clearest direct doctrinal overlap between the two books’ opening claims about Christ’s identity (Romans 1:3 vs. John 7:42) and should be cross-taught.
D.2 Shared Doctrine Categories (No Shared Quotation, but Shared Risk Profile)
John supplies the fuller argument (pre-existence, “I AM,” oneness with the Father) for a doctrine Romans asserts more briefly. Teach John as the doctrinal foundation Romans presupposes; use identical baseline terms (ईश्वरनि गोरा, प्रभु, ईश्वर) throughout.
Resurrection
Romans 1:4; 4:25; 6:4-5; 8:11 (जिउनाय सोलायनाय)
John 11:25; 20:1-29 (जिउनाय सोलायनाय, extended to three referents — Lazarus, Christ, believers)
Never फिन जोनोम in either curriculum. John’s Lazarus narrative (temporary) must be distinguished in teaching notes from the permanent resurrection both curricula affirm for Christ and for believers.
Grace / God’s Love
Romans 3:24; 5:2,15-17; 11:5-6 (मोफादांनाय दान)
John 1:14,16-17; 3:16 (मोफादांनाय दान; प्रेम)
John’s प्रेम (God’s love, the cause) and Romans’ मोफादांनाय दान (grace, the gift given) are theologically inseparable — love is the motive, grace is the gift. Teach together; both must resist the same two comparative-religion risks already documented in the baseline (Bathou/Kherai reciprocal-offering logic; Brahma Dharma merit-language).
Election / Effectual Calling
Romans 8:28-30; 9:11-12; 11:5-6 (ईश्वरनि सायख)
John 6:37,44,65; 15:16,19 (टानाय, “draw”; reuse of ईश्वरनि सायख)
Both must avoid भागी (impersonal fate) — the baseline’s forbidden substitution for election/providence applies identically to John’s “drawing” language.
Judgment
(Romans discusses divine wrath/judgment more diffusely, e.g. Romans 2:1-16)
John 3:17-19; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31,47-48; 16:8,11 (बिसार, new term)
John supplies the dedicated judgment vocabulary the Romans baseline lacked. This new बिसार term-family should be considered a retroactive enrichment available to Romans lessons as well, not a John-only category, per the Theological Consistency Rules inherited from the baseline instruction set (12_ai_translation_requirements.md).
Kingdom of God
Romans 14:17 (ईश्वरनि राज्य)
John 3:3,5; 18:36 (ईश्वरनि राज्य)
Identical baseline term; both curricula require the same non-territorial, non-ethnic-political framing given the Bodoland Territorial Region’s contemporary politics.
Lamb / Substitutionary Death
Romans 3:25 (propitiation, implicit); Romans 5:9 (justified by his blood)
John 1:29,36; 19:36 (ईश्वरनि भेडा गोरा)
Thematic, not textual, parallel. Teach John’s explicit Lamb typology as the narrative grounding for Romans’ more abstract propitiation language; both must resist the reciprocal-offering misreading already flagged in the baseline “grace” entry.
D.3 General Rendering-Consistency Rules for Phase 2
Verbatim OT quotations: Wherever John and Romans quote the identical Old Testament verse (Isaiah 53:1; Psalm 69:9,21; Psalm 69:4), the Bodo rendering must be pulled from the same source (the printed Bible Society of India Bodo Bible Old Testament) and recorded once in a shared OT-quotation sub-registry to be appended to translation_memory.json in Phase 2, rather than independently translated per curriculum.
Distinct-but-related OT texts (Isaiah 6:9-10 vs. Deuteronomy 29:4/Isaiah 29:10; Genesis 15:6 vs. Genesis 17/22): cite each by its own correct, normalized reference; never present one as a restatement of the other in teacher-facing material, even though the underlying doctrine (judgment/hardening; Abraham’s faith) is shared.
Typological fulfillment passages (Passover lamb, bronze serpent, manna, tabernacle/temple, shepherd, vine) require an explicit Old Testament narrative background note in the lesson material every time they occur, given this curriculum’s assumed low Old Testament narrative literacy (inherited assumption from the baseline’s tone requirements).
Messianic-title consistency: मसीह, ईश्वरनि गोरा, दाऊदनि बेंसे, and प्रभु must be rendered identically whether the context is an OT-quotation fulfillment (e.g., John 12:13-15) or a direct narrative confession (e.g., John 11:27; 20:28), per the baseline’s Theological Consistency Rules.
New बिसार (judgment) term family: since this is newly introduced by John but conceptually relevant to Romans (2:1-16; 14:10), flag for the Phase 2 translation-memory update process (per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §“New theological term” procedure) so future Romans re-translation passes can adopt it retroactively if the project scope permits.
Escalation: every row in Part A marked Critical must be routed to human theologian review per the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json review-routing convention; every row marked High likewise requires human theologian review; Medium requires native-speaker review; no rows in this matrix are Low risk, reflecting John’s unusually dense concentration of Critical/High-risk intertextual material relative to Romans.
This document must be loaded alongside 07_semantic_analysis.md, 08_core_glossary.md, and the Romans baseline package before Phase 2 segment translation of any John passage containing an Old Testament quotation, allusion, or typological reference.
