Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Philippians (English → Bodo)
Purpose
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md across the entire book of Philippians (chapters 1–4) into a single reference table, organized first by terms reused exactly from the baseline Romans translation memory (mandatory, no deviation permitted), then by new terms introduced by Philippians, grouped by the curriculum’s eight named doctrines. This file is the Phase 1 companion glossary to be merged into translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json during Phase 2 preparation.
All risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).
Part 1 — Terms Reused Exactly from the Baseline (Romans Translation Memory)

Part 2 — New Terms Introduced by Philippians, by Doctrine
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis) — Critical cluster
| Greek | Bodo Term | Transliteration | Risk | Passages | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μορφή θεοῦ | ईश्वरनि रूप | Isornni rup | Critical | 2:6 | Must convey Christ’s real, essential, pre-existent divine nature; Bathouism’s aniconic worship makes “form of God” unfamiliar territory requiring ground-up teaching, never one deity-form among the Kherai pantheon’s many. |
| ὑπάρχω | गोरोबबो थानाय | gorobbo thanai | High | 2:6 | Must convey continuous pre-existent reality, not a one-time “becoming.” |
| ἁρπαγμός | बलजबरीजों लाबो हैनाय जिनिस | boljabori jwng labo hainai jinis | High | 2:6 | Contested even in Greek scholarship; must not read as “robbery” (archaic gloss) but as declining to exploit rightful equality for advantage. Flag for theologian review every occurrence. |
| ἴσα θεῷ | ईश्वरनि सोमान | Isornni soman | Critical | 2:6 | Full ontological equality with God; ties directly to Deity of Christ (baseline Critical doctrine). |
| ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν (κενόω) | गिबिनि महिमा गोहोम सोलायनाय | gibini mohima gohom solainai | Critical | 2:7 | The single most theologically loaded term in the book. Voluntary self-limitation in status/glory, never loss of divine nature. Sharply distinct from Kherai doudini possession (a filling, not an emptying; involuntary, not voluntary). Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
| μορφὴν δούλου | दासनि रूप | dasni rup | Critical | 2:7 | Must use the same रूप root as μορφή θεοῦ to preserve the hymn’s deliberate parallelism. |
| ὁμοίωμα ἀνθρώπων | मानसिनि जोरा | manwsini jora | High | 2:7 | Genuine, not merely apparent, human likeness; guard against docetism. |
| σχῆμα | बाहागोरनि जोरा | bahagworni jora | Medium | 2:7 | Must be taught jointly with ὁμοίωμα to affirm real humanity. |
| ταπεινόω (ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν) | गिबिखौ गोहोम होबाय | gibikhw gohom hobai | High | 2:8 | Verbal counterpart of ταπεινοφροσύνη; Christ as supreme humility exemplar. |
| ὑπήκοος | मानोनाव थानाय | manwnao thanai | High | 2:8 | Relational, self-giving obedience unto death; distinct from Brahma Dharma’s rule-obedience ethic. |
| θάνατος σταυροῦ | क्रुसआव गोथोबनाय | krusao gwthobnai | Critical | 2:8 | Retain full shame/horror of crucifixion; verify क्रुस against printed Bodo Bible. |
| ὑπερύψωσεν | उन्नत खालामनाय | unnoto khalamnai | Critical | 2:9 | Never use बर’ऐ/बुरहा (forbidden elder-titles); God’s unique vindication of the Son. |
| ἐξομολογέω | स्वीकार खालामनाय | swikar khalamnai | Critical | 2:11 | Ties to Lordship-of-Christ confession (parallel to Romans 10:9); render with identical force. |
| μετασχηματίζω | गुदिखौ सोलायनाय | gudikhw solainai | Critical | 3:21 | Bodily, future, once-for-all transformation; not फिन जोनोम (forbidden rebirth term). |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χαρά / χαίρω | आनन्द / आनन्द लानाय | anondo / anondo lanai | Medium | 1:4, 1:18, 1:25, 2:2, 2:17-18, 2:28-29, 3:1, 4:1, 4:4, 4:10 | Must be distinguished from Kherai festival gaiety / Mainao harvest-blessing joy; biblical joy holds regardless of, and even within, suffering. |
| δεσμά | साकोलनाय | sakolnai | Medium | 1:7, 1:13-14, 1:17 | Chains reframed as gospel-advancing, not merely endured. |
| πάσχω / πάθημα | दुख सामोनाय | dukho samonai | High | 1:29-30, 3:10 | Must not collapse into fatalistic misfortune-acceptance (भागी); purposeful participation in Christ’s own pattern. |

| πεποίθησις ἐν σαρκί | गुदिनि जायगाव बिश्वास लानाय | gudini jaigao biswas lanai | Critical | 3:3-4 | Polemical foil: reliance on human/ritual credentials vs. faith-received righteousness. |
| περιτομή / κατατομή | खतना / कटानाय | khatna / katanai | High | 3:2-3, 3:5 | Requires OT covenant background; wordplay largely untranslatable, flag with note. |
| γινώσκω / γνῶσις | सानां खालामनाय | sanang khalamnai | Medium-High | 3:8, 3:10 | Relational knowledge of Christ, not doudini-style oracular/trance-mediated knowledge. |
| ζημία / σκύβαλα | लोकसान / गंदा जिनिस | loksan / gonda jinis | Medium | 3:7-8 | Deliberately visceral repudiation of former credentials; not ritual-impurity vocabulary. |
Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances
| Greek | Bodo Term | Transliteration | Risk | Passages | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| αὐτάρκης | सन्तुष्टि | suntusti | High | 4:11 | Christ-sourced contentment; distinct from Brahma Dharma ascetic detachment AND from fatalistic भागी-resignation. |
| μεμύημαι (μυέω) | सिखिनाय | sikhinai | High — special handling | 4:12 | Literal Greek = mystery-cult “initiation” language. Must NOT be rendered with any term evoking ritual initiation (risk of resonance with doudini Kherai-trance initiation). Render only as plain “having learned.” |
| ἐνδυναμόω | मसीहजों सक्ति मोननाय | Mosihjwng sakti monnai | High | 4:13 | Ongoing relational empowerment from Christ; categorically distinct from देउनि सक्ति (forbidden doudini trance-power). |
| μεριμνάω | फिक्रो खालामनाय | phikro khalamnai | Medium | 4:6 | Anxiety set against prayer, not contentment achieved by effort. |
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
| Greek | Bodo Term | Transliteration | Risk | Passages | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πολίτευμα | स्वर्गनि नागरिकता | sorgoni nagorikota | High | 3:20 | Given Bodoland Territorial Region’s contemporary ethnic-territorial politics, must be taught as transcending (not erasing or politicizing) earthly identity. Flag for theologian + native-speaker review together. |
| πολιτεύεσθε | नागरिकनि जीबन जीनाय | nagoriknai jibon jinai | High | 1:27 | Anticipates 3:20’s full citizenship doctrine. |
| σωτήρ | फोरायग्रा | phoraygra | Critical | 3:20 | Built on baseline फोरायनाय; taught ground-up per baseline salvation-doctrine notes. |
| ἐπουράνιος / ἐπίγειος / καταχθόνιος | स्वर्गनि / हामनि / पातालनि | sorgoni / hamoni / patalni | High | 2:10 | हा (“earth”) risks invoking Bathou five-element cosmology; teach as rhetorical totality-claim, not cosmological validation. |
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
| Greek | Bodo Term | Transliteration | Risk | Passages | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον | मंगल खबरनि गोसो जोंथानाय | mangal khaborni gwsw jwnthanai | High | 1:5 | Extends baseline fellowship term with material dimension; must not read as reciprocal ritual-exchange. |
| συγκοινωνέω | गोसो जोंथानायजों सोगो लाबोनाय | gwsw jwnthanaijwng sogo labwnai | Medium-High | 4:14 | Joint participation in Paul’s troubles through material support. |
| δόσις καὶ λῆμψις | होनाय आरो मोननाय | honai aro monnai | Medium-High | 4:15 | Commercial-sounding but relationally-intended; not payment-for-favor exchange logic. |
| ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας / θυσία δεκτή | सुख्रि बलि | sukhri boli | High | 4:18 | Cultic metaphor for financial gift; must be explicitly figurative, distinct from literal Bathou/Kherai offerings. |
| πλοῦτος | धन | dhon | Medium | 4:19 | God’s own inexhaustible resource; not Mainao (Kherai goddess of wealth/rice). |
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
| Greek | Bodo Term | Transliteration | Risk | Passages | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| διώκω | फिदोमनाय | phidomnai | High | 3:12, 3:14 | Pursuit of Christ who has already secured the goal; guard against Brahma Dharma merit-accumulation framing. |
| καταλαμβάνω | लाबोनाय | labwnai | Medium | 3:12-13 | Deliberate lexical echo/reversal of ἁρπαγμός (2:6): Christ grasped Paul, not the reverse. |
| σκοπός | लक्ष्य | lokkhyo | Medium | 3:14 | Must be explicitly Christ-ward, not generic self-improvement goal. |
| βραβεῖον | जितानाय दान | jitanai daan | Low-Medium | 3:14 | Prize of the heavenward race. |
| τέλειος | पूर्ण | purna | Medium | 3:15 | Relational maturity, not achieved moral perfection (Brahma Dharma risk). |

| καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης | धार्मिकतानि फल | dharmikotani phol | High | 1:11 | Fruit flowing from, not earning, righteousness. |
Risk Summary (Philippians-Specific New Terms)
| Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 13 | Human theologian, mandatory every occurrence |
| High | 28 | Human theologian |
| Medium | 24 | Native speaker |
| Low | 10 | Automated review |
Total new Philippians terms cataloged: 75, in addition to the 22 baseline terms reused exactly (Part 1).
Highest-priority review cluster: the kenosis hymn (Phil 2:6-11) — every term in this span is Critical or High risk and must not be scheduled for automated-only or native-speaker-only review under any circumstance.
Special handling flag: μεμύημαι (4:12) requires explicit avoidance of any ritual-initiation-sounding Bodo term, distinct in kind from the other risk flags in this glossary — this is a “forbidden connotation” risk rather than a “wrong established word” risk, and should be added to the Critical Forbidden Substitutions list in the Philippians AI Translation Requirements document (Phase 1 Step 12 equivalent).
This glossary must be merged into translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 segment translation begins on any Philippians lesson file. See analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md for full verse-by-verse and chapter-by-chapter justification of every entry above.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ईश्वर
Transliteration: Isor
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: बाथौबुरै (never use as the primary term for the biblical God; reserve strictly for describing traditional Bathou belief)
Original: θεός
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Deliberately preferred over बाथौबुरै (Bathoubwrai) to avoid presenting the biblical God as the existing Bathou high god under a new name. Occurs throughout Philippians (1:2, 2:6-11, 2:13, 4:19-20, etc.).
Jesus
Approved rendering: जिसु
Transliteration: Jisu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Established Bodo Bible form; verify against a current printed copy before finalizing. Occurs throughout Philippians.
Messiah
Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: mosih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Used for both ‘Christ’ and ‘Messiah’ throughout Philippians. Not one of many deities or spirit-mediators recognized in the Bathou pantheon.
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: probhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: बुरहा/बर’ऐ titles reserved for Bathoubwrai and Kherai-pantheon elder-deities, never use for Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Occurs in Philippians 1:2, 1:14, 2:11, 2:19, 3:1, 3:8, 3:20, 4:1, 4:4-5, 4:23. Never render with an honorific elder-title that would place Christ inside the existing Bathou pantheon.
Father
Approved rendering: आफा
Transliteration: afa
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: बाथौबुरै (reserve strictly for describing traditional belief, never for the biblical Father)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Occurs in Philippians 1:2, 2:11 (Son’s exaltation is ‘to the glory of God the Father’), 4:20.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पबित्र आत्था
Transliteration: pobitro aatha
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: देउ (a generic spirit-being from the Bathou/Kherai pantheon, never use), बुरहा-बुरही आत्था (ancestral household spirits, never use)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Must always appear in full, never bare देउ/आत्था. Occurs in Philippians 1:19, 2:1, 3:3.
Grace
Approved rendering: मोफादांनाय दान
Transliteration: mwphwdangnai daan
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: दान गोरोबनाय (reciprocal gift expecting return, rejected), पुण्य (Brahma Dharma merit-language, never use)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Occurs in Philippians 1:2, 1:7, 4:23; also the root of ἐχαρίσατο (‘graciously gave,’ Phil 2:9). Must resist both a Brahma Dharma merit-reading and a Bathou/Kherai reciprocal-offering reading.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dharmikota
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धर्म (avoid the bare Sanskritic cosmic-duty sense imported through Brahma Dharma reform teaching)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Occurs in Philippians 1:11, 3:6, 3:9 — the letter’s most direct extension of the baseline’s Romans 3-4 argument. Must never collapse into Brahma Dharma’s reformed religious-duty framework.
Justification
Approved rendering: धार्मिक होनाय राव
Transliteration: dharmik honai rao
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: गुनाहनि माफ (forgiveness alone, too narrow)
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Not textually re-occurring as a distinct Greek term in Philippians, but retained here for cross-curriculum consistency: Philippians 3:9’s righteousness-through-faith argument presupposes the forensic declaration this term names, and learners moving between Romans and Philippians lessons must encounter the same underlying doctrine.
Salvation
Approved rendering: फोरायनाय
Transliteration: phoraynai
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मोक्ष (Brahma Dharma’s Hindu-derived liberation concept, never use), रैखाथि (protection language, never use as a stand-alone gloss for eternal salvation)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Occurs in Philippians 1:19, 1:28, 2:12. Phil 2:12’s ‘work out your own salvation’ is especially vulnerable to a merit-reading shaped by Brahma Dharma’s merit ethic; must always be taught alongside 2:13 (‘God who works in you’) to preserve grace-priority.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: जिउनाय सोलायनाय
Transliteration: jiunai solainai
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: फिन जोनोम (rebirth/reincarnation, absorbed into Bodo discourse via Brahma Dharma reform teaching, never use)
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Occurs in Philippians 3:10-11 and underlies 3:21’s future bodily transformation. Never फिन जोनोम.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: मानसि गुदि सोलायनाय
Transliteration: manwsi gudi solainai
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: देउनि आगोर (a deity temporarily ‘descending into’ or speaking through a doudini during Kherai trance, never use)
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unchanged. Serves as the Bodo doctrine name’s base term for this curriculum’s central doctrine, rendered in full as ‘मसीहनि मानसि गुदि सोलायनाय आरो गिबिनि महिमा गोहोम सोलायनाय’ (the Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ). Sharply distinguished from doudini possession, which is a temporary filling, not a permanent, voluntary self-emptying taking on of human nature.
Form Of God
Approved rendering: ईश्वरनि रूप
Transliteration: Isornni rup
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: a rendering suggesting one deity-form among the Kherai pantheon’s many, rejected
Original: μορφή θεοῦ
Category: Christology
New term (μορφή θεοῦ, Phil 2:6). Must convey Christ’s real, essential, pre-existent divine nature. Bathouism’s aniconic worship (no image represents Bathoubwrai) makes this unfamiliar territory requiring ground-up teaching. Provisional pending Bodo-speaking theologian confirmation.
Equality With God
Approved rendering: ईश्वरनि सोमान
Transliteration: Isornni soman
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: a rendering suggesting a great spirit-being among the Kherai pantheon, rejected
Original: ἴσα θεῷ
Category: Christology
New term (ἴσα θεῷ, Phil 2:6). Full, uncompromised ontological equality with God the Father; ties directly to the baseline’s Critical Deity-of-Christ doctrine.
Self Emptying
Approved rendering: गिबिनि महिमा गोहोम सोलायनाय
Transliteration: gibini mohima gohom solainai
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: any rendering implying loss or diminishment of divine nature, absolutely rejected, any rendering resembling a deity filling/possessing a human medium, rejected
Original: ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν
Category: Christology
The single most theologically loaded term in Philippians (ἐκένωσεν, 2:7). Voluntary self-limitation of status/glory while retaining full deity. Sharply distinct from Kherai doudini possession (a filling, not an emptying; involuntary, not voluntary). Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence, no exceptions.
Form Of A Servant
Approved rendering: दासनि रूप
Transliteration: dasni rup
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Original: μορφὴν δούλου
Category: Christology
New term (μορφὴν δούλου, Phil 2:7). Must use the same रूप root as form_of_god to preserve the hymn’s deliberate structural parallelism for Bodo readers.
Death On A Cross
Approved rendering: क्रुसआव गोथोबनाय
Transliteration: krusao gwthobnai
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: a generic ‘death’ gloss losing the specific shame of crucifixion, rejected
Original: θάνατος σταυροῦ
Category: Christology
New term (θάνατος σταυροῦ, Phil 2:8). Retain the full shame/horror of crucifixion, not generic death. Verify क्रुस spelling against the current printed Bodo Bible for consistency.
Highly Exalted
Approved rendering: उन्नत खालामनाय
Transliteration: unnoto khalamnai
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: बर’ऐ/बुरहा honorific elder-titles, absolutely rejected
Original: ὑπερύψωσεν
Category: Christology
New term (ὑπερύψωσεν, Phil 2:9). Never use the forbidden elder-titles reserved for Bathoubwrai and the Kherai pantheon; this is God’s unique vindication of his own Son, not elevation among many spirit-beings.
Confess Lordship
Approved rendering: स्वीकार खालामनाय
Transliteration: swikar khalamnai
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος
Category: Christology
New term (ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος, Phil 2:11). Ties directly to the baseline’s Lordship-of-Christ confession (Romans 10:9, Critical); render with identical force and identical phrasing for curriculum-wide consistency.
Glory Of God The Father
Approved rendering: आफा ईश्वरनि महिमा
Transliteration: afa Isornni mohima
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: any rendering implying competition between the Son’s glory and the Father’s glory, rejected (matches the Oneness-collapsing bias risk)
Original: δόξα θεοῦ πατρός
Category: Christology
New term (δόξα θεοῦ πατρός, Phil 2:11). Requires explicit trinitarian framing: the Son’s exaltation and the Father’s glory are not in competition.
Confidence In Flesh
Approved rendering: गुदिनि जायगाव बिश्वास लानाय
Transliteration: gudini jaigao biswas lanai
Doctrine: Rejection of Confidence in the Flesh
Original: πεποίθησις ἐν σαρκί
Category: Salvation
New term (πεποίθησις ἐν σαρκί, Phil 3:3-4). The polemical foil for Righteousness by Faith versus the Law; sharply distinguish reliance on human/ritual/law-keeping credentials from धार्मिकता received by बिश्वास.
Savior
Approved rendering: फोरायग्रा
Transliteration: phoraygra
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
Rejected alternatives: मोक्ष-style liberation/rescuer framing from Brahma Dharma, never use
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

SPECIAL HANDLING (μεμύημαι, Phil 4:12). The literal Greek carries a mystery-cult ‘initiation’ sense that, if rendered with a Bodo term evoking ritual initiation, would resonate dangerously with a doudini’s ritual training/initiation into Kherai trance practice. Must convey only ‘coming to understand through experience.’ This is a forbidden-connotation risk, distinct in kind from ordinary wrong-word risk.

Rejected alternatives: a generic self-help target, rejected
Original: σκοπός
Category: Faith
New term (σκοπός, Phil 3:14), related to σκοπέω (2:4). Must be explicitly Christ-ward, not a generic self-improvement target that could carry Brahma Dharma resonance.

Original: ἀπόστολος (of Epaphroditus)
Category: Church
New term (ἀπόστολος of Epaphroditus, Phil 2:25) — a functional ‘sent one,’ distinct from the technical office of Apostle. Flag every occurrence to prevent conflation with the baseline’s गोदान जायगारि.

Doctrine: Prayer and the Peace of God
Original: φρουρέω
Category: Contentment
FLAG FOR REVIEW (φρουρέω, Phil 4:7). The baseline forbids रैखाथि as a stand-alone gloss for eternal salvation; its ordinary ‘protection/guarding’ sense is appropriate here for this specific verb, but a clarifying translator note is required every occurrence to avoid confusion with the forbidden salvation-gloss usage.

Transliteration: probhu pathiyao dong
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ὁ κύριος ἐγγύς

Belly As God
Approved rendering: बोखोरखौ ईश्वर महर मानोनाय
Transliteration: bokhorkhw Isor mohor manonai
