Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis: 1 John (Full-Book Coverage)

Purpose

This document is the complete doctrine matrix for 1 John, chapters 1–5, produced under PRD Phase 1 Step 4. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (1 John): same doctrines, same doctrine keys, same risk tiers, same review routing. This file adds the supporting-passage detail, translation-risk rationale, and explicit chapter-by-chapter coverage confirmation that the registry’s JSON schema does not carry. The core passage (1 John 4:7-21) is the theological anchor of the curriculum, not its scope boundary — every chapter of 1 John is analyzed below, including sections that do not touch the core passage directly.

No chapter of 1 John was found to contribute zero new theological load. Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 5 each carry doctrines and terms independent of chapter 4; chapter 4 itself divides into the Testing the Spirits section (4:1-6) and the core passage proper (4:7-21). This is recorded explicitly in the Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage section below.

Section A: Full Doctrine Matrix

Risk tiers follow the four-tier framework fixed in the Romans baseline and carried forward unchanged: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

#DoctrineMarathi Doctrine NameRiskSupporting Passages (1 John)Translation RiskReview Routing
1God is Lightदेव प्रकाश आहेCritical1:5; 1:7प्रकाश names God’s unchanging moral nature and self-revealing truthfulness. Risk of collision with Warkari darshan-light imagery (radiant vision of Vitthal’s मूर्ती) and with Buddhist bodhi/enlightenment associations, where light is an experience attained by the practitioner rather than an eternal divine attribute.Human theologian
2God is Loveदेव प्रीती आहेCritical4:8; 4:16The core passage’s doctrinal center. Risk of being read as an already-familiar Warkari bhakti-prema sentiment (Vitthal’s love for devotees) rather than an ontological claim about God’s essential nature prior to and grounding all human love; also risk of flattening into diffuse Buddhist karuṇā or an abstract impersonal principle.Human theologian
3Fellowship with God and One Anotherदेवाबरोबर व एकमेकांबरोबर सहभागिताHigh1:3; 1:6-7; 4:12-16The mutual-indwelling verb “abide” (μένω) risks assimilation to pantheistic Brahman-atman immanence or to Warkari devotional “Vitthal dwelling in the heart” imagery read poetically rather than as literal, personal, Trinitarian indwelling. Standing translator note required at first occurrence (2:6) and reinforced at 4:12-16.Human theologian
4Confession and Forgiveness of Sin — Confessionपापांची कबुलीHigh1:8-10Confession is direct, personal acknowledgment to God, not a ritual requiring a human priestly mediator and not prāyaścitta-style self-administered penance earning pardon by effort. Forgiveness rests on God’s own faithful and just character, satisfied in Christ, received through confession rather than merited by it.Human theologian
5Confession and Forgiveness of Sin — Cleansingपापांपासून शुद्धीकरण व क्षमाHigh1:7; 1:9शुद्ध करणे risks reading as repeatable ritual/ceremonial purification (snana-type purificatory rites) rather than the real, once-for-all moral cleansing accomplished by Christ’s blood alone. Standing translator note required at every occurrence.Human theologian
6Propitiation for Sinsपापांसाठी प्रायश्चित्तCritical2:2; 4:10प्रायश्चित्त’s everyday cultural sense is self-performed penance/expiatory ritual by the guilty party. 1 John’s claim inverts this: God himself provides and Christ himself accomplishes the propitiation. Every occurrence requires a qualifying phrase or standing translator note, escalated on par with the Romans baseline’s 3:25 atonement escalation rule.Human theologian
7Christ as Advocateख्रिस्त आपला मध्यस्थHigh2:1मध्यस्थ must be Christ’s own unique legal-defense role before the Father, grounded in his propitiatory death — not a generic mediating guru, sant-figure, or devotional intercessory saint.Human theologian
8New Birth (Born of God)देवापासून नवा जन्मCritical2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1; 5:4; 5:18Must never use पुनर्जन्म (Hindu reincarnation) or पुनर्भव (Buddhist technical rebirth-of-aggregates), both already forbidden in the Romans baseline for “resurrection.” This is 1 John’s central, recurring structural marker of genuine faith and its single most collision-prone doctrine; requires positive teaching of a completed, once-for-all, Spirit-wrought begetting, not merely a rejected-word list.Human theologian
9Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birthबंधूंवरील प्रीती नव्या जन्माचा पुरावाHigh2:9-11; 3:10-18; 4:7-21बंधू must be read as fellow-believer kinship transcending caste/community boundaries, paralleling the Romans baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles sensitivity. करुणा risks being read as a self-cultivated Buddhist brahmavihāra virtue rather than the spontaneous fruit of new birth; prefer कनवाळू अंतःकरण or a qualified करुणा.Human theologian
10Identity as Children of Godदेवाची मुले असण्याची ओळखHigh3:1-2; 5:2देवाची मुले is related to but distinct from the Romans baseline’s दत्तक पुत्रत्व (formal legal adoption/inheritance emphasis); 1 John stresses the given, relational, loving character of the status. Both terms must be cross-referenced in translation memory to preserve doctrinal continuity without collapsing distinct Greek terms.Human theologian
11The IncarnationदेहधारणCritical1:1-3; 4:2-3; 5:6Eyewitness language (“heard…seen…looked upon…touched”) and the confessional test of 4:2-3 must never be assimilated to Vaishnav avatar theology (repeatable divine descent) or Bodhisattva-rebirth imagery (postponing one’s own liberation to be reborn for others, an image Ambedkar himself invoked). Risk is intensified here because denial of this claim is 1 John’s own definition of the antichrist spirit (4:3).Human theologian
12Sonship and Deity of Christ (Only-Begotten Son)ख्रिस्ताचे पुत्रत्व व ईश्वरत्वCritical4:9; 4:15; 5:5; 5:10-13; 5:20एकुलता एक पुत्र must never be softened to one honored son among many, nor assimilated to Vaishnav avatar theology or a Bodhisattva-type figure understood as one of many enlightened beings. 5:20’s “true God” (खरा परमेश्वर) must retain full exclusive force against the idols named in 5:21.Human theologian
13Antichrist and False Teachingख्रिस्तविरोधी व खोटे शिक्षणHigh2:18-23; 4:1-3; 4:6ख्रिस्तविरोधी must not be assimilated to an existing culturally available cosmic-adversary figure (e.g., a Kali Yuga degeneration narrative) or a messianic-reversal figure from another tradition. It names denial of the apostolic confession about Jesus’ identity, a tendency already active in John’s own day, not exclusively a single future world-ruler.Human theologian
14Testing the Spiritsआत्म्यांची परीक्षाHigh4:1-6Carries strong folk-religious resonance (bhagat/māntrik practices identifying possessing spirits, bhūt-pret exorcism). Translator note essential: this is a doctrinal test of teaching content (confession of the incarnate Christ), not a ritual test for spirit-possession or occult discernment.Human theologian
15Anointing of the Spiritपवित्र आत्म्याचा अभिषेकHigh2:20; 2:27अभिषेक is a live, active Hindu ritual term (ceremonial anointing of a deity’s मूर्ती, e.g. Shiva-abhisheka). Translator note required: this is the Spirit’s inward teaching ministry given to every believer at conversion, countering incipient Gnostic elitism, not a repeatable external ritual act on a sacred object or person.Human theologian
16Assurance of Salvationतारणाची खात्रीCritical5:11-13; 3:19-24; 4:171 John 5:13’s stated purpose presents assurance as a presently-known, settled fact grounded in Christ’s finished work — not a karmic ledger, not gradually merited status, and not destabilized by Buddhist anatta (no-self) teaching about who “knows.” Should be taught relationally per the Romans baseline’s assurance_of_salvation notes.Human theologian
17Eternal Lifeसार्वकालिक जीवनCritical1:2; 2:25; 5:11-13; 5:20Must never be assimilated to मोक्ष/मुक्ती (Warkari-Hindu liberation from the rebirth cycle) or निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation of craving, an impersonal extinguishing). The presently-known, assured, relational character of this life is itself a distinguishing positive claim requiring explicit teaching.Human theologian
18Overcoming the Worldजगावर विजयHigh2:15-17; 4:4; 5:4-5; 5:19Must not be conflated with Buddhist overcoming of craving (taṇhā) through self-disciplined Eightfold-Path practice, nor Hindu tapasya-style spiritual conquest. Victory is grounded explicitly in the indwelling Spirit (4:4) and faith in the Son of God (5:4-5) — a gift received, not a state attained by effort.Human theologian
19Righteousness and Lawlessness (Sin Defined)नीतिमत्त्व आणि नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघनHigh2:29; 3:4-103:4 must render ἀνομία as नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन, never अधर्म — the Romans baseline’s rejection of अधर्म for ἁμαρτία applies with equal or greater force given ἀνομία’s literal “lawless-ness” sense and its caste-Hindu resonance. Practiced righteousness here is ethical evidence of new birth, distinct from Romans’ forensic-declaration sense of the same root term; requires a clarifying translator note.Human theologian
20The Threefold Witness (Water, Blood, Spirit)पाणी, रक्त व आत्मा यांची साक्षHigh5:6-11Interpretively complex triad (baptism, atoning death, Spirit’s testimony) corroborating the incarnation and atonement against docetic denial; inherits High risk from those adjacent doctrines and requires an accompanying study note rather than a purely literal rendering.Human theologian
21Sin Unto Death / Not Unto Deathमरणास कारण होणारे पापHigh5:16-17Risks being read through a karma-consequence lens (sin mechanically causing death as cosmic retribution) rather than as a specific theological category (persistent, unrepentant apostasy). Standing translator/study note flagging the interpretive debate and explicitly warning against a karmic-mechanism reading required.Human theologian
22Idolatry and the True Godमूर्तिपूजा आणि खरा परमेश्वरCritical5:20-21मूर्ती is the exact, everyday word for actively worshiped sacred images throughout Maharashtra (Ganpati मूर्ती at visarjan; the Vitthal मूर्ती at Pandharpur). Lands with unusual directness for Hindu-background readers while also resonating with Ambedkarite Buddhist-background readers who historically renounced murti-worship. Requires a study note framing this verse as the letter’s climactic call to undivided devotion to the true God.Human theologian
23Confidence Before God (Prayer and Judgment)देवासमोर निर्भय भरवसाHigh3:19-22; 4:17-18; 5:14-15धैर्य/निर्भय भरवसा must be grounded in Christ’s finished work and God’s declared verdict, not self-generated courage or merit-earned confidence. The removed “fear” is specifically dread of judicial punishment from a personal God, not impersonal karmic retribution worked off through merit.Human theologian
24The Love of God Manifested in Sending the Sonपुत्राला पाठवण्याद्वारे देवाच्या प्रीतीचे प्रकटीकरणCritical4:9-10; 4:14The core passage’s central claim: God’s love became historically visible in a concrete, unrepeatable sending of the unique Son as propitiation. Combines the Critical risks of प्रीती, एकुलता एक पुत्र, and प्रायश्चित्त in one doctrinal unit; any softening of 4:10’s negation (“not that we loved God, but that he loved us”) would collapse the doctrine into a merit-based, devotee-initiated bhakti framework the text explicitly excludes.Human theologian
25The Command to Love One Anotherएकमेकांवर प्रीती करण्याची आज्ञाMedium3:23; 4:21The command flows from relationship with Christ and gratitude for having been loved first, not an independent legal-merit or caste-dharma-style obligatory-duty system. Obligation language (4:11) must be framed as grateful response, not merit-earning performance.Native speaker review
26The World’s Threefold Desireजगातील त्रिविध वासनाMedium2:16Standard moral vocabulary describing the practical content of “the world”; low ambiguity once जग itself is correctly anchored as the God-opposing value-system rather than physical creation.Native speaker review
27Apostolic Eyewitness Testimonyप्रेषितांची साक्षMedium1:1-4The letter’s opening eyewitness claims ground the gospel in verifiable history; साक्ष देणे must be public, corroborated testimony, not comparable to a guru’s or teacher’s personally attained spiritual insight offered privately to disciples.Native speaker review
28Pastoral Address to Believersविश्वासणाऱ्यांना प्रेमळ संबोधनLow2:1; 2:12-14; 2:18; 2:28; 3:7; 3:18; 4:4; 5:21Standard affectionate address form (“little children”), distinct from the theological status claim of “children of God”; minimal doctrinal risk.Automated review

Section B: Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Confirmation

1 John 1 (1:1-10)

  • Doctrines active: Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony (1:1-4); Fellowship with God and One Another (1:3, 1:6-7); The Incarnation (1:1-3, background — “word of life” made manifest); God is Light (1:5, 1:7); Confession and Forgiveness of Sin — both Confession (1:8-10) and Cleansing (1:7, 1:9).
  • Load-bearing terms introduced: word of life (जीवनाचे वचन), fellowship (सहभागिता, baseline reuse), light/darkness (प्रकाश/अंधकार), walk (चालणे), cleanse (शुद्ध करणे), sin (पाप, baseline reuse), confess (कबूल करणे), faithful and just (विश्वासू आणि न्यायी), blood of Jesus (रक्त).
  • Coverage status: Fully analyzed. This chapter establishes the letter’s entire theological architecture (testimony → fellowship → light → sin/confession) and must not be treated as mere prologue.

1 John 2 (2:1-29)

  • Doctrines active: Christ as Advocate and Propitiation (2:1-2); Righteousness and Lawlessness — background (2:29 “practices righteousness” anchors 3:4-10); Fellowship/Abiding (2:6, 2:10, 2:14, 2:24, 2:27-28 — first anchor occurrence of “abide” at 2:6); Love for the Brethren (2:9-11); Overcoming the World (2:12-14, 2:15-17); Antichrist and False Teaching (2:18-23); Anointing of the Spirit (2:20, 2:27); Identity as Children of God — background (2:29 transitions into 3:1); Pastoral Address (2:1, 2:12-14, 2:18, 2:28).
  • Load-bearing terms introduced: advocate (मध्यस्थ), propitiation (प्रायश्चित्त), abide/remain (राहणे/वास करणे), world (जग), lust of flesh/eyes, pride of life (देहवासना, डोळ्यांची वासना, जीवनाचा गर्व), antichrist (ख्रिस्तविरोधी), last hour (शेवटची घटका/अंतिम काळ), anointing (अभिषेक), confess (second sense — doctrinal confession of Christ, 2:22-23), righteousness (नीतिमत्त्व, baseline reuse, ethical sense).
  • Coverage status: Fully analyzed. Chapter 2 is where Critical propitiation and the anchor rendering of “abide” must be fixed before any Phase 2 translation proceeds, since both recur constantly through the rest of the book.

1 John 3 (3:1-24)

  • Doctrines active: Identity as Children of God (3:1-2); Assurance of Salvation — background (3:19-24, first major “confidence/heart condemns us not” passage); New Birth (3:9); Righteousness and Lawlessness / Sin Defined (3:4-10); Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (3:10-18); Confidence Before God (3:19-22); the twin commandment of faith and love (3:23, feeding into Medium-risk “Command to Love One Another”).
  • Load-bearing terms introduced: children of God (देवाची मुले), seed of God (बीज), lawlessness (नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन), liar (खोटारडा), brother (बंधू), compassion/bowels of compassion (करुणा/कनवाळू अंतःकरण), commandment (आज्ञा), confidence (धैर्य/निर्भय भरवसा).
  • Coverage status: Fully analyzed. Chapter 3 carries the single heaviest concentration of new-birth-and-love vocabulary outside the core passage and must not be treated as merely preparatory to chapter 4.

1 John 4 (4:1-6 and 4:7-21 — the core passage)

  • 4:1-6 (Testing the Spirits, pre-core section): Testing the Spirits; Antichrist and False Teaching (continued); Overcoming the World (4:4, “greater is he that is in you”). Terms: test the spirits (आत्म्यांची परीक्षा घेणे), spirit of error, holy spirit (baseline reuse).
  • 4:7-21 (core passage): God is Love; The Love of God Manifested in Sending the Son; Sonship and Deity of Christ (only-begotten Son, 4:9); Propitiation (4:10); Fellowship/Abiding (4:12-16); Assurance of Salvation and Confidence Before God (4:17-18); Love for the Brethren (4:20-21); the singular love-command (4:21).
  • Coverage status: Fully analyzed as the theological anchor of the curriculum. Both halves of chapter 4 are documented separately above to ensure the pre-core section (4:1-6) is not silently absorbed into the core passage’s scope.

1 John 5 (5:1-21)

  • Doctrines active: New Birth (5:1, 5:4, 5:18); Overcoming the World (5:4-5, 5:19); Sonship and Deity of Christ (5:5, 5:10-13, 5:20); The Threefold Witness — Water, Blood, Spirit (5:6-11); Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (5:11-13); Sin Unto Death / Not Unto Death (5:16-17); Confidence Before God, in prayer (5:14-15); Idolatry and the True God (5:20-21); Pastoral Address (5:21, “little children, keep yourselves from idols”).
  • Load-bearing terms introduced: overcome (जिंकणे/मात करणे), water and blood (पाणी आणि रक्त), testify/testimony (साक्ष देणे/साक्ष), sin unto death (मरणास कारण होणारे पाप), keep oneself / kept by God (स्वतःला राखणे / देव राखतो), understanding (समज), true God (खरा परमेश्वर), idols (मूर्ती), savior of the world (जगाचा तारणारा — carried from 4:14 but consummated in 5:11-13, 20’s “eternal life” framing).
  • Coverage status: Fully analyzed. Chapter 5 is the letter’s doctrinal and pastoral climax (assurance, eternal life, the true God vs. idols) and must receive review attention equal to the core passage, not treated as a coda.

Full-book coverage confirmation: All five chapters of 1 John have been analyzed above with explicit doctrine, term, and coverage-status entries. No chapter contributes zero new theological load; each chapter is recorded rather than silently folded into chapter 4’s scope.

Section C: Continuity with the Romans Baseline

The following doctrines and terms carry over from the Romans baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json and translation_memory.json without modification, and 1 John’s usage is fully consistent with their established Romans risk tiers and renderings:

Baseline doctrine/termRomans risk1 John continuity
God (परमेश्वर)CriticalUsed throughout 1 John; culminates in 5:20’s “true God” (खरा परमेश्वर).
Jesus (येशू)Critical1:3; 2:1, 22; 4:2, 15; 5:1, 5, 20.
Son of God (देवाचा पुत्र)CriticalExtended by the new “only-begotten Son” (एकुलता एक पुत्र) nuance at 4:9.
Holy Spirit (पवित्र आत्मा)Critical3:24; 4:2, 6, 13; 5:6-8; grounds Testing the Spirits and Anointing of the Spirit doctrines.
Father (पिता)Critical1:2-3; 2:1, 15-16, 22-24; 3:1; 4:14.
Salvation (तारण)CriticalRoot of the new “savior of the world” (जगाचा तारणारा) term at 4:14, and background to Eternal Life and Assurance of Salvation doctrines.
Faith / believe (विश्वास)High3:23; 4:1, 16; 5:1, 4-5, 10, 13 — grounds Overcoming the World and Testing the Spirits.
Sin (पाप)High1:7-2:2, 8-10; 3:4-9; 5:16-17 — grounds Confession/Cleansing and Sin Unto Death doctrines.
Law (नियमशास्त्र)HighRoot of the new “lawlessness” (नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन) term at 3:4; never अधर्म, per the Romans baseline’s explicit rejection carried forward with intensified force.
Righteousness (नीतिमत्त्व)Critical2:29; 3:7, 10 — ethical/evidential sense in 1 John, distinct from but not contradictory to Romans’ forensic sense; flagged in doctrine #19 above.
Adoption (दत्तक पुत्रत्व)HighCross-referenced with, but not collapsed into, the new “children of God” (देवाची मुले) term at 3:1 (doctrine #10 above).
Called (बोलावलेले)High3:1, “that we should be called children of God.”
Fellowship (सहभागिता)Low1:3, 6-7 — elevated to High risk within 1 John’s Fellowship doctrine because of the added abide/indwelling dimension, per doctrine #3 above.

No baseline rendering is contradicted or altered by this analysis. Where 1 John’s usage intensifies a baseline risk (e.g., Fellowship moving from Low to High; Righteousness gaining an ethical-evidential sense alongside its forensic sense), this is noted explicitly rather than silently changing the baseline entry.

Critical Risk Doctrines

God is Light

Marathi name: देव प्रकाश आहे
Key terms: light, darkness, walk
Review routing: Human theologian

प्रकाश names God’s essential moral nature and self-revealing truthfulness, paired definitionally with ‘God is love’ (4:8,16). Risk of collision with Warkari devotional darshan-light imagery (the radiant vision of Vitthal’s murti) and with the Buddhist association of light with bodhi/enlightenment attained through the Eightfold Path; here light is an unchanging attribute of God’s nature, not an experience granted to or self-attained by a practitioner.

God is Love

Marathi name: देव प्रीती आहे
Key terms: love, love of God manifested
Review routing: Human theologian

The doctrinal center of the curriculum’s core passage. Warkari devotional literature is saturated with language of Vitthal’s love/compassion for devotees (bhakti-prema), so a Marathi reader may initially file this as an already-familiar devotional sentiment rather than recognize it as an ontological claim about the one true God’s essential nature, prior to and the ground of any human response. Must also be guarded against a vague, feeling-based ‘universal love’ reading that would flatten it into either the diffuse compassion (karuṇā) cultivated as a virtue in Navayana Buddhist ethics, or an abstract impersonal principle.

Propitiation for Sins

Marathi name: पापांसाठी प्रायश्चित्त
Key terms: propitiation, advocate, blood of Jesus
Review routing: Human theologian

प्रायश्चित्त’s everyday Hindu-cultural sense is a self-performed penance or expiatory ritual undertaken by the guilty party. 1 John’s claim is the opposite: God himself provides and Christ himself accomplishes the propitiation. Every occurrence requires a qualifying phrase or standing translator note, escalated on par with the Romans baseline’s Romans 3:25 atonement/propitiation escalation rule.

New Birth (Born of God)

Marathi name: देवापासून नवा जन्म
Key terms: born of God, seed of God, children of God
Review routing: Human theologian

देवापासून जन्मलेला आहे must NEVER be rendered with पुनर्जन्म (Hindu reincarnation) or the Buddhist technical पुनर्भव (arising of a new configuration of aggregates, explicitly not a continuous self) — both already forbidden in the Romans baseline for ‘resurrection.’ ‘Born of God’ recurs as 1 John’s central structural marker of genuine faith, making this the single most collision-prone new doctrine in the book; it requires positive teaching (a completed, once-for-all, Spirit-wrought begetting), not merely a rejected-word list.

The Incarnation

Marathi name: देहधारण
Key terms: word of life, manifested, confess, water and blood
Review routing: Human theologian

1 John’s eyewitness language (‘heard…seen…looked upon…touched,’ 1:1) and the confessional test of 4:2-3 must never be assimilated to Vaishnav avatar theology (repeatable divine descent) or Bodhisattva-rebirth imagery (repeatedly postponing liberation to be reborn for others’ sake, an image Ambedkar himself invoked). This is a one-time, unique, historical, bodily coming of the eternal Son — the same collision risk documented in the Romans baseline’s incarnation doctrine, intensified here because 1 John makes denial of this claim the very definition of antichrist spirit (4:3).

Sonship and Deity of Christ (Only-Begotten Son)

Marathi name: ख्रिस्ताचे पुत्रत्व व ईश्वरत्व
Key terms: only-begotten Son, Son of God, true God
Review routing: Human theologian

एकुलता एक पुत्र (the one and only Son) must never be softened to suggest Christ is one honored son among many, nor assimilated to Vaishnav avatar theology (one of several divine descents), nor to a Bodhisattva-type figure understood as one of many enlightened beings. 5:20’s climactic ‘true God’ (खरा परमेश्वर) must retain full exclusive force paired against the idols named in 5:21.

Assurance of Salvation

Marathi name: तारणाची खात्री
Key terms: eternal life, confidence, know, understanding
Review routing: Human theologian

1 John 5:13’s stated purpose (‘that you may know that you have eternal life’) presents assurance as a presently-known, settled fact grounded in Christ’s finished work — not a karmic ledger, not a status attained gradually through merit, and not a status whose ‘knower’ is philosophically destabilized by Buddhist anatta (no-self) teaching. This doctrine should be taught relationally, per the Romans baseline’s assurance_of_salvation notes, rather than resting on a particular metaphysics of selfhood.

Eternal Life

Marathi name: सार्वकालिक जीवन
Key terms: eternal life, savior of the world, true God
Review routing: Human theologian

सार्वकालिक जीवन must never be assimilated to मोक्ष/मुक्ती (Warkari-Hindu liberation from the rebirth-cycle, attained through bhakti or right living) or निर्वाण (the Buddhist cessation of craving and suffering, an impersonal extinguishing rather than an everlasting, personal, relational life with God). The presently-known, assured character of this life (5:13) is itself a distinguishing positive claim requiring explicit teaching.

Idolatry and the True God

Marathi name: मूर्तिपूजा आणि खरा परमेश्वर
Key terms: idols, true God, god
Review routing: Human theologian

मूर्ती is the exact, everyday Marathi word for the sacred images actively worshiped throughout Maharashtra — Ganpati मूर्ती immersed at visarjan, and above all the Vitthal मूर्ती enshrined at Pandharpur, the devotional center of Warkari bhakti. This closing verse therefore lands with unusual directness for a Hindu-background reader, while equally serving as a point of continuity for an Ambedkarite Buddhist-background reader who has already renounced murti-worship historically. Requires human theologian review and a study note framing this as the letter’s climactic call to undivided devotion to the true God (5:20), not an isolated ethical appendix.

The Love of God Manifested in Sending the Son

Marathi name: पुत्राला पाठवण्याद्वारे देवाच्या प्रीतीचे प्रकटीकरण
Key terms: love, manifested, only-begotten Son, propitiation, savior of the world
Review routing: Human theologian

The core passage’s central claim: God’s love is not abstract but became historically visible and effective in a concrete, unrepeatable, once-for-all sending of the unique Son as propitiation. This combines the Critical risks of प्रीती, एकुलता एक पुत्र, and प्रायश्चित्त in a single doctrinal unit; any softening of the negation in 4:10 (‘not that we loved God, but that he loved us’) would collapse the doctrine into a merit-based devotional framework (bhakti-style devotee-initiated love) that the text explicitly excludes.

High Risk Doctrines

Fellowship with God and One Another

Marathi name: देवाबरोबर व एकमेकांबरोबर सहभागिता
Key terms: fellowship, abide, know God
Review routing: Human theologian

The mutual-indwelling language (μένω, ‘abide’) risks assimilation to pantheistic divine immanence (Hindu Brahman-atman teaching) or to Warkari devotional imagery of Vitthal ‘residing in the devotee’s heart’ understood poetically rather than as literal, personal, Trinitarian indwelling. A standing translator note distinguishing personal indwelling from pantheistic immanence is required at first occurrence and reinforced through chapter 4.

Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (Confession)

Marathi name: पापांची कबुली
Key terms: confess, sin, faithful and just
Review routing: Human theologian

Confession here is direct, personal acknowledgment to God (1:9), not a ritual requiring a human priestly mediator, and not prāyaścitta-style self-administered penance that earns pardon by the sinner’s own effort. Forgiveness rests on God’s own faithful and just character satisfied in Christ, received through confession, not merited by it.

Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (Cleansing)

Marathi name: पापांपासून शुद्धीकरण व क्षमा
Key terms: cleanse, blood of Jesus, sin
Review routing: Human theologian

शुद्ध करणे (cleanse) risks reading as ritual/ceremonial purification (snana, purificatory rites) requiring repetition and self- or priest-administration, when 1 John describes a real, once-for-all moral cleansing accomplished by Christ’s blood alone. A standing translator note is required at every occurrence.

Christ as Advocate

Marathi name: ख्रिस्त आपला मध्यस्थ
Key terms: advocate, intercession, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian

मध्यस्थ must be understood as Christ’s own unique legal-defense role before the Father, grounded in his propitiatory death — not a generic mediating guru, sant-figure, or intercessory saint comparable to devotional intermediaries in Warkari or popular Buddhist practice.

Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth

Marathi name: बंधूंवरील प्रीती नव्या जन्माचा पुरावा
Key terms: love, brother, compassion, liar, lay down life
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Brother’ (बंधू) must be read as fellow-believer kinship transcending caste/community boundaries, directly paralleling the Romans baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles sensitivity in Maharashtra. Compassion (करुणा) risks being read as a self-cultivated Buddhist ethical virtue (a brahmavihāra developed through meditative practice) rather than the spontaneous fruit of a heart transformed by new birth; prefer कनवाळू अंतःकरण or a qualified करुणा.

Identity as Children of God

Marathi name: देवाची मुले असण्याची ओळख
Key terms: children of God, called, adoption
Review routing: Human theologian

देवाची मुले is related to but distinct from the Romans baseline’s दत्तक पुत्रत्व (formal legal adoption/inheritance emphasis); 1 John stresses the given, relational, loving character of this status (3:1). Both terms must be cross-referenced in translation memory so Phase 2 translators recognize doctrinal continuity without collapsing the two Greek terms into one.

Antichrist and False Teaching

Marathi name: ख्रिस्तविरोधी व खोटे शिक्षण
Key terms: antichrist, spirit of error, confess
Review routing: Human theologian

ख्रिस्तविरोधी must not be assimilated to an existing culturally available cosmic-adversary figure (e.g., a Kali Yuga degeneration narrative) or to a messianic-reversal figure from another tradition. It names specifically the denial of the apostolic confession about Jesus’ identity, a tendency already active in John’s own day (2:19), not exclusively a single future world-ruler.

Testing the Spirits

Marathi name: आत्म्यांची परीक्षा
Key terms: test the spirits, spirit of error, holy spirit
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Testing/discerning spirits’ carries strong folk-religious resonance in rural and urban Maharashtra alike (bhagat/mांत्रिक practices identifying possessing spirits, bhūt-pret exorcism rituals). A translator note is essential clarifying that 1 John’s test is doctrinal — does the teaching confess the true incarnate Christ? — not a ritual test for spirit-possession or an occult discernment practice.

Anointing of the Spirit

Marathi name: पवित्र आत्म्याचा अभिषेक
Key terms: anointing, holy spirit, testing the spirits
Review routing: Human theologian

अभिषेक is a live, active ritual term in Hindu practice (ceremonial anointing of a deity’s murti with milk, water, honey — e.g., Shiva-abhisheka). A translator note is required clarifying this is the Spirit’s inward teaching ministry given to every believer at conversion (countering incipient Gnostic elitism in John’s original context), not a repeatable external ritual act performed on a sacred object or person.

Overcoming the World

Marathi name: जगावर विजय
Key terms: world, overcome, faith, worldly desire
Review routing: Human theologian

Victory over ‘the world’ (जग) must not be conflated with Buddhist teaching on overcoming worldly attachment/craving (taṇhā) through self-disciplined practice on the Eightfold Path, nor with Hindu tapasya-style spiritual conquest. 1 John grounds victory explicitly in the indwelling Spirit (4:4) and in faith in the Son of God (5:4-5) — a gift received, not a state attained by effort.

Righteousness and Lawlessness (Sin Defined)

Marathi name: नीतिमत्त्व आणि नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन
Key terms: righteousness, lawlessness, law, practice righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian

3:4’s definition of sin as ἀνομία must be rendered नियमशास्त्राचे उल्लंघन, never अधर्म — the Romans baseline’s rejection of अधर्म for the related term ἁμαρτία applies with equal or greater force here given ἀνομία’s even more literal ‘lawless-ness’ sense and its caste-Hindu resonance. Practiced righteousness here is ethical fruit/evidence of new birth, distinct from Romans’ forensic-declaration sense of the same root term, requiring a clarifying translator note.

The Threefold Witness (Water, Blood, Spirit)

Marathi name: पाणी, रक्त व आत्मा यांची साक्ष
Key terms: water and blood, testify, holy spirit
Review routing: Human theologian

This triad (Jesus’ baptism, his atoning death, and the Spirit’s testimony) is interpretively complex rather than culturally collision-prone; nonetheless it corroborates the incarnation and atonement against docetic denial, so it inherits High risk from those adjacent doctrines and requires an accompanying study note rather than a purely literal rendering.

Sin Unto Death / Not Unto Death

Marathi name: मरणास कारण होणारे पाप
Key terms: sin unto death, intercession, confidence
Review routing: Human theologian

This pastoral distinction risks being read through a karma-consequence lens (sin mechanically causing death as cosmic retribution) rather than as a specific theological category (likely referring to persistent, unrepentant apostasy). A standing translator/study note flagging the interpretive debate and explicitly warning against a karmic-mechanism reading is required.

Confidence Before God (in Prayer and at Judgment)

Marathi name: देवासमोर निर्भय भरवसा
Key terms: confidence, fear of judgment, punishment, perfected love
Review routing: Human theologian

धैर्य/निर्भय भरवसा must be grounded in Christ’s finished work and God’s declared verdict, not self-generated courage or confidence earned by accumulated merit/good karma. The removed ‘fear’ (भीती) is specifically dread of judicial punishment (शिक्षा/दंड) from a personal God, not an impersonal karmic retribution mechanism that a person might work off through merit.

Medium Risk Doctrines

The Command to Love One Another

Marathi name: एकमेकांवर प्रीती करण्याची आज्ञा
Key terms: commandment, love, obligation
Review routing: Native speaker review

The command (आज्ञा) to love flows from relationship with Christ and gratitude for having been loved first, not an independent legal-merit or caste-dharma-style obligatory-duty system; ensure any rendering of obligation language (ὀφείλομεν, 4:11) is framed as grateful response, not merit-earning performance.

The World’s Threefold Desire

Marathi name: जगातील त्रिविध वासना
Key terms: worldly desire, world
Review routing: Native speaker review

Standard moral vocabulary describing the practical content of ‘the world’; low ambiguity once जग (world) itself is correctly anchored as the God-opposing value-system rather than the physical creation.

Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony

Marathi name: प्रेषितांची साक्ष
Key terms: testify, word of life, apostle
Review routing: Native speaker review

The letter’s opening eyewitness claims ground the gospel in verifiable history; साक्ष देणे must be public, corroborated testimony, not comparable to a guru’s or teacher’s personally attained spiritual insight offered privately to disciples.

Low Risk Doctrines

Pastoral Address to Believers

Marathi name: विश्वासणाऱ्यांना प्रेमळ संबोधन
Key terms: little children
Review routing: Automated review

Standard affectionate address form, distinct from the theological status claim of ‘children of God’; minimal doctrinal risk.
