Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis: Philippians 1–4 (English–Marathi)

Purpose and Scope

This document provides the full doctrine matrix for Philippians, chapter by chapter, cover to cover, per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate. Philippians 2:1-11 (the kenosis hymn) is the theological anchor of this curriculum, but every chapter and every major section of the letter is analyzed below — including sections that introduce no new doctrine or terminology, which are explicitly marked “reviewed, no new load” rather than silently omitted.

This matrix is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (Philippians): the same 16 doctrine keys and the same risk tiers are used throughout (Critical: 8, High: 6, Medium: 2, Low: 0). Section 3 additionally maps chapter content onto baseline doctrines inherited from the Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json, reused with unchanged tiers, to ensure no doctrinal claim in Philippians is left unclassified.

Section 1 — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Matrix (Philippians-Specific Doctrines)

Philippians 1

VersesDoctrine (registry key)Supporting PassagesRiskTranslation Risk NotesReview Routing
1:1church_leadership_and_officesPhil 1:1 (ἐπίσκοπος, διάκονος, δοῦλος)MediumPaul & Timothy’s self-designation as δοῦλος (दास) rather than प्रेषित (as in Romans 1:1) must be preserved deliberately, not smoothed into “apostle.” अध्यक्ष/सेवक must avoid caste-hierarchy or temple-authority overtones; दास carries sensitive caste/bonded-labor resonance requiring pastoral handling.Native speaker review
1:2(baseline: grace, peace)Phil 1:2High / MediumStandard salutation formula; कृपा and शांती per baseline, no new risk.Human theologian (grace) / Native speaker (peace)
1:3-8partnership_in_the_gospelPhil 1:5, 1:7-8Highशुभवर्तमानातील सहभागिता must carry the concrete, ongoing partnership sense (not mere sentiment) established from the letter’s opening. 1:8 “affection of Christ Jesus” (agapē, core glossary #10) must be specified as Christlike self-giving love, not generic bhakti-devotional emotion.Human theologian
1:6gods_completing_work_in_salvationPhil 1:6Critical”He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion” is the first statement of the doctrine completed at 2:12-13; must be rendered so the initiating and completing agent is unambiguously God, not the believer’s discipline.Human theologian
1:9-11(baseline: righteousness, faith, love)Phil 1:9-11Critical (righteousness)1:11 “filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ” must retain नीतिमत्त्व as Christ-derived status/fruit, never धर्म-style cosmic duty.Human theologian
1:12-14joy_in_suffering_and_imprisonmentPhil 1:12-14HighPaul’s imprisonment (बंधने, core glossary #12) advancing the gospel; keep literal/historical, and keep आनंद/gospel-advance framing distinct from stoic or bhakti detachment readings.Human theologian
1:15-18joy_in_suffering_and_imprisonmentPhil 1:15-18HighJoy despite rivalrous preaching motives; आनंद anchored “in this I rejoice,” not circumstance-based.Human theologian
1:18-20(baseline: salvation, holy_spirit)Phil 1:19-20Criticalतारण and पवित्र आत्मा per baseline; Paul’s confident hope of deliverance/vindication, not this-worldly rescue only.Human theologian
1:21-26joy_in_suffering_and_imprisonment (“to live is Christ, to die is gain,” core glossary #22)Phil 1:21-26High”मरणे म्हणजे लाभ” must not be read as generic release-from-suffering (proximate to Buddhist duḥkha-cessation); the gain named is fuller possession of Christ himself, not escape as such.Human theologian
1:27citizenship_in_heaven (verb form, πολιτεύεσθε)Phil 1:27High”Let your manner of life [citizenship-conduct] be worthy of the gospel” — first occurrence of the citizenship theme, verbal form anticipating the noun πολίτευμα at 3:20. Must carry the same “higher, prior allegiance” force established at 3:20.Human theologian
1:27unity_and_humility_in_the_church (phroneō, “one mind”)Phil 1:27High”Standing firm in one spirit, with one mind” — first occurrence of the φρονέω refrain-verb central to this doctrine, resumed at 2:2, 2:5, 4:2.Human theologian
1:28-30grace_extended_to_sufferingPhil 1:29-30Critical”It has been granted (ἐχαρίσθη/कृपापूर्वक दिले गेले) to you… to suffer” — must never sound like suffering-as-deserved-karmic-consequence; frame as privileged grace-gift, parallel to and sharing the root of the gift of faith.Human theologian

नम्रता must be distinguished from caste-based deference or devotional self-abasement before a deity/guru; this is Christ-patterned, self-giving humility.Human theologian
2:5mind_of_christ_as_ethical_patternPhil 2:5HighThe hinge verse of the entire letter and of the core passage: “Have this mind among yourselves, which was also in Christ Jesus” must make the causal, participatory link to 2:6-11 unmistakable — not reduce Christ to a merely exemplary moral teacher (the closest available Buddhist category for the Buddha).Human theologian
2:6incarnation_and_kenosis; deity_of_christPhil 2:6Criticalμορφὴ θεοῦ (देवाचे स्वरूप) — full pre-existent divine nature, not a Vaishnav avatar-manifestation or Buddha-like revered-teacher category. ἁρπαγμός (बळकावून ठेवण्यासारखी गोष्ट) and ἴσα θεῷ (देवाच्या बरोबरीचे) must never imply Christ gained equality with God (guards against adoptionism). CORE PASSAGE VERSE.Human theologian
2:7incarnation_and_kenosisPhil 2:7Criticalἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν (स्वतःला रिकामे केले) — highest-risk phrase in the curriculum. Must always be taught as emptying of status/prerogative, never of deity/being; guards against Buddhist śūnyatā/anatta self-negation readings. μορφὴν δούλου (दासाचे रूप) mirrors and contrasts देवाचे स्वरूप structurally — this parallel must survive translation. Never अवतार. CORE PASSAGE VERSE.Human theologian
2:8incarnation_and_kenosis; obedience_of_faithPhil 2:8Criticalὑπήκοος (आज्ञाधारक) “obedient unto death, even death on a cross” — Christ’s obedience is the ground/pattern for believers’ (shares आज्ञा-root with baseline विश्वासाचे आज्ञापालन). σταυρός (क्रूस) must retain full historical shame/horror, not become a generic suffering-symbol. CORE PASSAGE VERSE.Human theologian
2:9-11deity_of_christ; lordship_of_christPhil 2:9-11Criticalὑπερύψωσεν (अत्युच्च स्थानी बसवले); “the name above every name” (सर्व नावांपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ नाव) alludes to the divine Name YHWH (Isaiah 45:23) — this OT allusion must be made explicit in teaching notes or the exaltation reads as honor comparable to a revered guru/Buddha. The confession “येशू ख्रिस्त प्रभू आहे” (2:11) MUST match the Romans 10:9 formula verbatim per cross-document consistency rules, retaining exclusive, cosmic-scope lordship (“every knee… in heaven, on earth, under the earth”) — not one more beloved deity in a devotee’s pantheon alongside Vitthal. CORE PASSAGE VERSES — climax.Human theologian
2:12-13gods_completing_work_in_salvationPhil 2:12-13Critical”Work out your own तारण” (आपापले तारण साधून घ्या) must NEVER be translated or taught apart from 2:13 (“God who works in you,” तुमच्यामध्ये कार्य करणारा) — otherwise reads as self-earned liberation resembling the Eightfold Path or karma-merit framework. Mandatory paired rendering.Human theologian
2:14-16unity_and_humility_in_the_churchPhil 2:14-16High”Do all things without grumbling,” “blameless,” φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ (जगात ज्योतींसारखे प्रकाशता, core glossary #27) — avoid conflation with personal enlightenment/bodhi-attainment imagery; this is missional visibility of the church, not individual illumination.Human theologian
2:17-18partnership_in_the_gospel; joy_in_suffering_and_imprisonmentPhil 2:17-18Highσπένδομαι (अर्पण होणे, “poured out as a drink offering”) — OT sacrificial background; must not read as puja-style ritual offering. Paired with mutual joy (आनंद) despite cost.Human theologian
2:19-24church_leadership_and_offices; partnership_in_the_gospelPhil 2:19-24 (Timothy)MediumCommendation of Timothy’s proven gospel service (“as a son with his father he has served with me in the gospel”); no new doctrinal risk beyond baseline फेलोशिप/service vocabulary; register/tone consistency only.Native speaker review
2:25-30partnership_in_the_gospel; joy_in_suffering_and_imprisonmentPhil 2:25-30 (Epaphroditus)HighEpaphroditus “risked his life” (2:30) for the work of Christ — costly, sacrificial partnership; reinforces that suffering-for-the-gospel is honored, not karmic misfortune.Human theologian

3:1joy_in_suffering_and_imprisonmentPhil 3:1High”Rejoice in the Lord” (आनंद… प्रभूमध्ये) — joy explicitly anchored in the Lord, resisting bhakti kirtan-ecstasy or Buddhist equanimity readings.Human theologian
3:2-6righteousness_by_faith_versus_the_lawPhil 3:2-6CriticalWarning against “the mutilation” (κατατομή, wordplay with περιτομή, #40); Paul’s credentials — “Hebrew of Hebrews,” Pharisee, “confidence in the flesh” (देहावर भरवसा ठेवणे, #41) — repudiated, never presented as praiseworthy Torah-observance. नियमशास्त्र must never collapse into धर्म/धम्म.Human theologian
3:7-9righteousness_by_faith_versus_the_lawPhil 3:7-9CriticalThe doctrinal center of this curriculum’s law/faith teaching: righteousness “not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but… through faith in Christ” — नीतिमत्त्व/आरोपित नीतिमत्त्व (credited, not self-labor-earned) must be unmistakable, distinguished from both Hindu merit-path and Buddhist self-cultivation. σκύβαλα (घाण/कचरा, #30) — preserve Paul’s intentionally shocking coarseness.Human theologian
3:8righteousness_by_faith_versus_the_law (γνῶσις Χριστοῦ)Phil 3:8Critical”Knowing Christ” (ख्रिस्ताला ओळखणे) must use relational ओळखणे vocabulary; ज्ञान alone risks assimilation to Hindu jñāna-mārga or Buddhist prajñā/bodhi self-attained wisdom. Keep the personal object (“Christ Jesus my Lord”) always explicit.Human theologian
3:10-11bodily_resurrection_and_final_glorificationPhil 3:10-11Critical”Power of his resurrection” (देवाचे सामर्थ्य, never शक्ती), “share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (समरूप होणे, #34, deliberately echoing μορφή of 2:6-7), “attain the resurrection” (पुनरुत्थान, never पुनर्जन्म/पुनर्भव).Human theologian
3:12-16pressing_on_toward_the_goal_in_christPhil 3:12-16Highτέλειος (परिपक्व/पूर्ण) — Paul explicitly denies present self-perfection; guard against siddhi/nibbāna-attainment framing. διώκω (पाठलाग करत राहणे) is energetic pursuit grounded in already being laid hold of by Christ, not anxious self-effort. σκοπός/βραβεῖον (ध्येय/बक्षीस) reuses baseline “calling” (पाचारण) root for “upward call.”Human theologian
3:17-19righteousness_by_faith_versus_the_law (contrast); citizenship_in_heaven (contrast)Phil 3:17-19High”Enemies of the cross,” “their god is their belly,” “minds set on earthly things” — sets up the citizenship contrast completed at 3:20; earthly-mindedness vs. heavenly citizenship.Human theologian
3:20-21citizenship_in_heaven; bodily_resurrection_and_final_glorificationPhil 3:20-21Critical / Highπολίτευμα (नागरिकत्व) — primary, higher allegiance above caste/community/Ambedkarite-movement identity, taught without appearing to erase the dignity any convert’s social-reform identity has provided. σωτήρ (तारणारा, core glossary #24, never मोक्षदाता/मुक्तिदाता). Believers’ future body “conformed” (समरूप, #34) to Christ’s glorious body — must not be read as change of Buddhist “aggregates” or escape from embodiment.Human theologian

4:8-9(baseline ethical exhortation; no new doctrine key)Phil 4:8-9Low-Medium”Whatever is true… think about these things” — general ethical catalogue; reviewed, no new doctrinal or terminological load beyond standard register/tone rules. “The God of peace will be with you” reuses शांती per baseline.Native speaker review

4:20(baseline: glory)Phil 4:20HighDoxology “to God be glory” — गौरव per baseline, no new risk.Human theologian

Section 2 — Full-Book Coverage Confirmation

Every verse-range of Philippians 1–4 has been reviewed above. Where a section carries no new doctrinal or terminological risk beyond standard register, tone, and baseline term enforcement, this has been explicitly marked “reviewed” (e.g., Phil 2:19-24 commendation of Timothy; Phil 4:8-9 ethical catalogue) rather than silently omitted, per the full-book coverage mandate.

No chapter of Philippians is doctrine-free. All four chapters carry either Philippians-specific doctrines (Section 1) or load-bearing occurrences of baseline Romans doctrines (Section 3 below).

Section 3 — Baseline Doctrines (Romans) Reused in Philippians, Unchanged Tiers

These doctrines were already established in the Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json and are reused here without modification, per the “extends, never contradicts” rule. Listed with their Philippians occurrences for full-book completeness.

Additional baseline (Romans) doctrines carried into Philippians without tier change, for full-book completeness (Section 3): 18 doctrine references spanning Critical (5), High (11), Medium (1), Low (1). These do not alter the Philippians-specific risk_summary above; they document pre-existing baseline coverage now confirmed load-bearing in this book.

Section 5 — Notes for Phase 2 Routing

  1. Core passage priority: Phil 2:6-11 carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier doctrine in the book (incarnation_and_kenosis, deity_of_christ, lordship_of_christ all converge here) and must receive first-priority human theologian review in every translation pass.
  2. Paired-verse mandates: 2:12 must never be translated, reviewed, or excerpted apart from 2:13; 4:11-12 must never be separated from 4:13. Flag any segment splitting these pairs for mandatory re-review.
  3. Cross-document consistency: The Phil 2:11 Lordship confession must be verified against the Romans 10:9 confession record before approval (per baseline Theological Consistency Rules).
  4. No doctrinally silent chapters: Chapters 1–4 each contain at least one Critical-tier doctrine occurrence; no chapter may be batch-approved without theologian review at least once per chapter.
  5. Sections marked “reviewed, no new load” (2:19-24, 4:8-9, 4:21-23) still require standard register/consistency (native speaker) review per the Glossary Enforcement Priority Order; they are not exempt from all review, only from theologian-tier escalation.

This document extends 11_doctrine_analysis.md conventions from the Romans baseline and must be loaded alongside doctrine_risk_registry.json, bible_term_registry.json, and translation_memory.json before Phase 2 segment translation begins.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)

Marathi name: ख्रिस्ताचे देहधारण आणि आत्मत्याग (रिक्तीकरण)
Key terms: incarnation, kenosis, form_of_god, form_of_a_servant, harpagmos, equality_with_god
Review routing: Human theologian

‘स्वतःला रिकामे केले’ (ekenōsen) risks being read through Buddhist śūnyatā/anatta categories as self-negation or dissolution of the self, rather than the voluntary veiling of divine prerogative while Christ’s full deity remains intact. ‘देवाचे स्वरूप’ (μορφὴ θεοῦ) risks being read as one more form/manifestation of Vishnu-Krishna, the way Vitthal is understood within Warkari theology, or as an honored-teacher category comparable to the Buddha. Never अवतार for the incarnation itself.

Deity of Christ

Marathi name: ख्रिस्ताचे ईश्वरत्व
Key terms: form_of_god, equality_with_god, name_above_every_name, lord, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian

‘The name above every name’ (2:9) alludes to the divine Name YHWH of Isaiah 45:23; if this Old Testament allusion is lost in translation or teaching notes, readers may take Christ’s exaltation as an honor comparable to that given to a revered guru or the Buddha, rather than as identification with परमेश्वर himself.

Lordship of Christ

Marathi name: ख्रिस्ताचे प्रभुत्व
Key terms: lord, name_above_every_name, highly_exalted
Review routing: Human theologian

The confession ‘येशू ख्रिस्त प्रभू आहे’ (2:11) must match the Romans 10:9 confession formula exactly, per baseline cross-document consistency rules, and must retain exclusive, cosmic-in-scope lordship over ‘every knee…in heaven, on earth, and under the earth’ (2:10) — not one more beloved personal deity in a devotee’s chosen pantheon alongside Vitthal.

Righteousness by Faith versus the Law

Marathi name: नियमशास्त्राऐवजी विश्वासाद्वारे नीतिमत्त्व
Key terms: righteousness, law, faith, imputed_righteousness, gnosis_of_christ, confidence_in_the_flesh, skybala_rubbish
Review routing: Human theologian

Paul’s repudiated ‘righteousness under the law’ must not be presented as praiseworthy Torah-observance, and नियमशास्त्र must never collapse into धर्म/धम्म. ‘Knowing Christ’ (γνῶσις, 3:8) must use relational ओळखणे vocabulary rather than ज्ञान alone, which names the Hindu jñāna-mārga and Buddhist prajñā/bodhi self-attained-wisdom traditions, risking the passage being read as commending self-achieved enlightenment rather than relational knowledge of a person received by grace.

Contentment in All Circumstances

Marathi name: सर्व परिस्थितीत समाधान
Key terms: autarkeia_contentment, endynamounti_strengthens_me, memyemai_initiated, power_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian

समाधान/समाधानी names a self-generated Stoic sufficiency in the Greek background, and in Marathi religious usage overlaps with the Hindu yogic virtue of संतोष cultivated through vairāgya (detachment) and with Buddhist upekkhā (equanimity) cultivated along the Eightfold Path. Verse 4:13 (‘through him who strengthens me,’ सामर्थ्य, never शक्ती) must never be separated from 4:11-12 so that contentment is understood as Christ-empowered, not self-cultivated detachment.

Grace Extended to Suffering

Marathi name: दुःखभोगातही कृपादान
Key terms: grace, grace_gift_of_suffering, election
Review routing: Human theologian

Naming suffering itself as कृपापूर्वक दिले गेले (graciously granted, sharing the कृपा/grace root) risks, if mishandled, sounding like suffering is deserved consequence or karmic result of past sin — a framework Ambedkarite Buddhist communities in Maharashtra explicitly and painfully rejected by converting away from caste Hinduism. This must be taught as a Christ-honoring privilege graciously given, parallel to the gift of faith itself, never as punishment.

God’s Completing Work in Salvation

Marathi name: तारणातील देवाचे पूर्ण करणारे कार्य
Key terms: salvation, god_who_works_in_you, work_out_salvation
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Work out your own तारण’ (2:12), read apart from 2:13 (‘the God who is at work in you’), could sound like self-earned liberation achieved through disciplined effort — closely resembling the Buddhist Eightfold Path framework or a Hindu karma-merit path. Both verses must always be taught together so that salvation is understood as lived-out and Spirit-enabled, not self-achieved.

Bodily Resurrection and Final Glorification

Marathi name: देहाचे पुनरुत्थान व अंतिम गौरवप्राप्ती
Key terms: resurrection, symmorphos_conformed, glory, soter_savior
Review routing: Human theologian

The believer’s future bodily transformation (glorified yet still embodied, 3:21) must never be read as a change of ‘aggregates’ in the Buddhist sense, nor as escape from embodiment altogether as in Hindu/Buddhist liberation-from-body motifs. पुनरुत्थान is reused exactly per baseline — never पुनर्जन्म or पुनर्भव.

High Risk Doctrines

Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment

Marathi name: दुःखात व बंदिवासात आनंद
Key terms: joy_rejoice, bonds_imprisonment, grace_gift_of_suffering, to_live_is_christ_to_die_is_gain
Review routing: Human theologian

आनंद is the everyday Marathi word for joy/bliss saturated with Warkari bhakti kirtan-ecstasy directed at Vitthal, and could also be misread as Buddhist equanimity attained through detachment from suffering; every occurrence must be anchored explicitly ‘in the Lord’/‘in Christ’ so joy is understood as gospel-grounded rather than circumstance-dependent happiness or a self-cultivated inner state.

Unity and Humility in the Church

Marathi name: मंडळीतील एकता आणि नम्रता
Key terms: tapeinophrosyne, phroneo_mindset, sympsychoi, kenodoxia, agape_love
Review routing: Human theologian

नम्रता is already a prized virtue in Hindu bhakti submission to a guru/deity and in caste-linked social etiquette of deference; Philippians commands a Christ-patterned, self-giving humility that willingly relinquishes rightful status for others’ good, not caste-based subordination or devotional self-abasement before a deity.

Citizenship in Heaven

Marathi name: स्वर्गातील नागरिकत्व
Key terms: politeuma_citizenship, soter_savior, symmorphos_conformed
Review routing: Human theologian

In Maharashtra, primary identity is often bound to caste, community, or the collective identity of the 1956 Ambedkarite Buddhist conversion movement; ‘our citizenship (नागरिकत्व) is in heaven’ claims a prior, higher allegiance above every earthly community identity. This must be taught with the same clarity as the baseline’s christian_identity_in_christ doctrine, without appearing to erase or dishonor the dignity any convert’s social-reform identity has provided.

Partnership in the Gospel

Marathi name: शुभवर्तमानातील सहभागिता
Key terms: fellowship, partnership_in_gospel, poured_out_sacrifice_service, fragrant_offering
Review routing: Human theologian

सहभागिता alone under-specifies the concrete material/financial participation distinctive to Philippians (occasioned by the Philippians’ monetary gift to Paul). The sacrificial-offering imagery describing that gift (बलिदान, never यज्ञ) risks resonance with Hindu पूजा (pūjā) offering-ritual practice unless anchored explicitly to Old Testament sacrificial background rather than ritual merit-giving.

Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ

Marathi name: ख्रिस्तातील ध्येयाकडे धावणे
Key terms: dioko_press_on, goal_and_prize, teleios_mature, gnosis_of_christ
Review routing: Human theologian

परिपक्व/पूर्ण (teleios) must not suggest a self-attained state of completion resembling yogic siddhi or Buddhist arahantship/nibbāna reached through disciplined progress along the Eightfold Path; Paul explicitly denies having ‘already become teleios’ even while pressing on, since the goal is Christ-given and future (resurrection), not present self-perfection.

The Mind of Christ as the Pattern for Ethics

Marathi name: आचरणाचा नमुना म्हणून ख्रिस्ताची मनोवृत्ती
Key terms: phroneo_mindset, tapeinophrosyne, obedient_unto_death
Review routing: Human theologian

This hinge verse grounds the church’s ethical unity and humility not in generic moral advice but in participatory Christology — ‘have this mind among yourselves, which was also in Christ Jesus.’ The Marathi must make the causal/participatory link to 2:6-11 unmistakable, not reduce it to ‘be like Jesus’ as a merely exemplary moral teacher, the closest available Buddhist category applied to the Buddha.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Church Leadership and Offices

Marathi name: मंडळीतील अधिकारपद व सेवाकार्य
Key terms: episkopos_overseer, diakonos_deacon, doulos_slave, apostle
Review routing: Native speaker review

अध्यक्ष (overseer) and सेवक (deacon) must avoid caste-hierarchy or temple-institutional-authority overtones. Paul’s deliberate self-designation as दास (slave/bondservant) rather than प्रेषित (apostle, as in Romans 1:1) must be preserved, not smoothed over, and handled pastorally given दास’s caste-linked, bonded-labor resonance in the Marathi social context.

Prayer and the Peace of God Amid Anxiety

Marathi name: चिंतेत देवाची शांती व प्रार्थना
Key terms: peace, intercession
Review routing: Native speaker review

देवाची शांती (the peace of God) must remain relational — guarding hearts through prayer to a personal, listening परमेश्वर — and not collapse into मनःशांती-style meditative calm sought through mindfulness practice or bhakti detachment from desire.
