Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Titus (Full Book) | English → Marathi

Methodology Note

This analysis proceeds in two parts, per PRD Phase 1 Step 1:

  1. Part 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse (Titus 2:11–3:8): every load-bearing term is analyzed with original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variant renderings, contextual theological meaning within Titus, and destination-language (Marathi) rendering risk.
  2. Part 2 — Whole-Book Chapter-by-Chapter Study: every chapter of Titus (1–3) is covered in full. Terms already treated in the core-passage section are cross-referenced rather than re-analyzed in full. Chapters/sections introducing no new theological vocabulary state this explicitly.

Baseline reuse rule: Any term already established in the Romans translation_memory.json (κρपा=grace, विश्वास=faith, तारण=salvation, नीतिमान ठरवणे=justification, पवित्र आत्मा=Holy Spirit, परमेश्वर=God, येशू=Jesus, प्रेषित=apostle, देवाची निवड=election, पवित्र=holy, उत्तेजन देणे=exhort, नियमशास्त्र=law, इ.) is reused exactly below and marked “[BASELINE REUSE].” New terms required for Titus’s distinctive vocabulary (regeneration, godliness, sound doctrine, submission, good works, Savior, mercy, elder/overseer) are proposed and risk-assessed here for the first time, consistent with baseline conventions and never contradicting them.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE: Titus 2:11–3:8

Titus 2:11

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological Meaning in TitusMarathi Rendering & Risk
ἐπεφάνη (ἐπιφαίνω)epephanē”was made to appear / shone forth”To become visible, to be manifested publicly; used of a dawn breaking or a divine visitation becoming perceptible”appeared” (KJV/ESV/NIV), “has dawned” (some modern versions)Grace is not an abstract principle but a historical, datable event — the incarnation and earthly ministry of Christ. Ties together 1:3 (God “manifested his word”), 2:13 (future “appearing of glory”) and 3:4 (kindness “appeared”) into one epiphany theme spanning past grace and future glory.CRITICAL. Render प्रकट झाली (prakaṭ jhālī, “was manifested/revealed”). Must never be assimilated to अवतार-language (Vitthal/Krishna’s periodic avatar-descents) nor to a Bodhisattva-style repeatable manifestation. This is a once-for-all historical disclosure, consistent with baseline’s Incarnation caution.
χάριςcharis”favor, gift”Unmerited favor; a gift given, not earned”grace”Grace itself is personified as the acting subject — grace “appeared” and “trains” (v.12). This is Titus’s central soteriological term.CRITICAL — [BASELINE REUSE] कृपा. Per baseline: must not read as Vitthal’s devotional कृपा earned through bhakti devotion, nor as available through Buddhist self-cultivation.
σωτήριοςsōtērios”saving, bringing salvation”Adjectival form of σωτηρία (salvation); “salvation-bringing""that brings salvation” (ESV/NIV), “which bringeth salvation” (KJV)Describes the character/purpose of the grace that appeared — it is inherently salvific, not neutral or generic favor.HIGH. Render तारण देणारी (tāraṇ deṇārī, “salvation-giving”), built on baseline’s तारण root. Never मोक्षदायी or मुक्तिदायी (liberation-giving), which would import Warkari/Hindu liberation categories.
πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποιςpasin anthrōpois”to all men/people”Universal scope, without ethnic, social, or status qualification”to all people” (ESV/NIV), “to all men” (KJV)Grace’s saving appearance is for every human being without distinction — directly continues Romans’ “no distinction” theme (cf. baseline universal_scope_of_gospel).HIGH. Render सर्व माणसांसाठी (sarva māṇasāṃsāṭhī). Given the 1956 Ambedkarite Buddhist conversion’s living memory in Maharashtra as an explicit rejection of caste hierarchy, this universality must be rendered with zero softening or qualification.

Contextual note: Titus 2:11 is the doctrinal hinge of the whole letter and the opening of the core passage (“Grace That Trains for Godly Living”). Everything from 1:1–2:10 (elder qualifications, household instructions) is now grounded theologically in this single sweeping statement: grace itself — not law-keeping, caste status, or self-effort — is the reason godly conduct is even possible.

Titus 2:12

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
παιδεύουσα (παιδεύω)paideuousa”training, disciplining, child-rearing”Formative instruction, including correction; the root of “pedagogy""training” (ESV/NIV), “teaching” (KJV)The curriculum’s title doctrine: grace is not passive pardon but an active, ongoing pedagogue that forms character. This is the theological center of “Grace That Trains for Godly Living.”CRITICAL — new term. Render शिस्त लावणारी / प्रशिक्षण देणारी (śist lāvṇārī, “that instills discipline/trains”). Must be framed as grace’s own action upon the believer — never rendered so as to suggest self-training via willpower (which would collapse into the very self-cultivation ethic, e.g. the Eightfold Path, that this doctrine displaces).
ἀρνησάμενοι (ἀρνέομαι)arnēsamenoi”having denied/renounced”Disowning, refusing, renouncing”renounce” (ESV/NIV), “deny” (KJV)The negative counterpart to training: turning away from ungodliness is grace’s fruit, not a precondition for receiving grace.MEDIUM. नाकारून (nākārūn, “having rejected/renounced”).
ἀσέβειαasebeia”lack of reverence toward God”Godlessness, impiety; opposite of εὐσέβεια”ungodliness”The condition grace trains believers away from — moral/relational estrangement from God, not ritual impurity.HIGH — new term. Render अभक्ती (abhaktī, lit. “non-devotion/godlessness”) as the direct opposite of सुभक्ति (see below). Avoid अधर्म (dharma-loaded) per baseline’s law/righteousness caution.
κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίαςkosmikas epithymias”worldly desires/lusts”Desires oriented to the present, passing order (κόσμος) rather than to God”worldly passions” (ESV), “worldly lusts” (KJV)Desires rooted in the present age’s value system, contrasted with the age to come (v.13).MEDIUM. ऐहिक वासना (aihik vāsanā, “this-worldly desires”).
σωφρόνωςsōphronōs”self-controlledly, sensibly”Sound-mindedness, moderation, self-mastery”self-controlled” (ESV/NIV), “soberly” (KJV)First of a triad (self-control toward self, righteousness toward others, godliness toward God) describing grace-trained living. Recurs across Titus (1:8; 2:2,4,5,6).HIGH — new term, recurring. संयमाने (saṃyamāne, “with self-control”). Must be shown as grace-enabled fruit, not self-generated yogic/ascetic discipline — parallel caution to baseline’s imputed_righteousness note against स्वकष्टार्जित (self-labor-earned) virtue.
δικαίωςdikaiōs”justly, righteously”Right conduct toward others, consistent with righteous standing”uprightly” (ESV), “righteously” (KJV)Adverbial use of the δικ- root, built on baseline’s नीतिमत्त्व (righteousness).HIGH — [BASELINE-CONSISTENT] नीतिमत्त्वाने. Reuses the established नीतिमत्त्व root; never धर्माने.
εὐσεβῶςeusebōs”godly, in a manner reverencing God”Right conduct/reverence directed toward God specifically”godly” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Third term of the triad — devotion and reverence directed vertically to God, forming the basis of the curriculum’s overall pastoral emphasis on godliness.HIGH — new term, recurring. सुभक्तीने (subhaktīne, “with true godly devotion”), from सुभक्ति (see 1:1 note below).
νῦν αἰῶνιnyn aiōni”the present age”This current era, contrasted with the age to come”present age” (ESV/NIV), “this present world” (KJV)Sets up the already/not-yet tension resolved by v.13’s “blessed hope.”LOW. सध्याच्या युगात (sadhyācyā yugāt).

Titus 2:13

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
προσδεχόμενοιprosdechomenoi”awaiting, looking eagerly for”Expectant reception, welcoming anticipation”waiting for” (ESV/KJV), “wait for” (NIV)Present hope is oriented toward a future, certain event — not cyclical or open-ended expectation.LOW. वाट पाहत (vāṭ pāhat).
μακαρίαν ἐλπίδαmakarian elpida”blessed hope”A hope that is itself a source of blessing/happiness”blessed hope” (all major versions)Christian hope is fixed, joyful, and certain — grounded in a specific future event (Christ’s return), not an indefinite cycle of rebirth or an impersonal cessation.MEDIUM — new term. धन्य आशा (dhanya āśā).
ἐπιφάνειαν (ἐπιφάνεια)epiphaneian”appearing, manifestation”The visible, glorious return of Christ (parousia); same root as 2:11 and 3:4”appearing” (ESV/NIV), “glorious appearing” (KJV)The future appearing mirrors the past appearing (2:11) — one saving history, two epiphanies. Must not be confused with cyclic avatar-return or with any notion of an impersonal recurring cosmic event.CRITICAL. प्रकटीकरण (prakaṭīkaraṇ, “manifestation/appearing”). Cross-reference translator note distinguishing this from अवतार and from cyclical time frameworks per baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine notes.
δόξης (δόξα)doxēs”glory”Radiant honor, weighty splendor”glory”Christ’s future appearing is an appearing “of glory” — visible, undeniable divine honor.HIGH — [BASELINE REUSE] गौरव.
τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦtou megalou theou kai sōtēros hēmōn Iēsou Christou”of the great God and our Savior, Jesus Christ”Grammatically (Granville Sharp construction: one article governing two nouns joined by καί) this identifies “great God” and “Savior” as one person: Jesus Christ”our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (ESV/NIV/NASB); KJV punctuates ambiguously (“the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ”)One of the clearest direct affirmations of the full deity of Christ in the NT — Jesus Christ is explicitly named “great God.” Directly reinforces baseline’s deity_of_christ and sonship_of_christ doctrines.CRITICAL. Render आपला महान परमेश्वर व तारणारा येशू ख्रिस्त (āplā mahān Parameśvar va tāraṇārā Yeśū Khrist), preserving the single-referent grammatical structure so Marathi readers cannot misread this as two separate figures (God the Father and a lesser, merely-honored Jesus). Requires theologian review flag per baseline escalation rule for any Deity-of-Christ segment.
σωτήρsōtēr”savior, deliverer”One who rescues/delivers from danger or death; used of God and, distinctively here, of Christ”Savior”Titus applies σωτήρ to God the Father (1:3; 2:10; 3:4) and to Jesus Christ (1:4; 2:13; 3:6) almost interchangeably — a title-sharing pattern that itself testifies to Christ’s deity.CRITICAL — new term (not yet in baseline TM, though its root √तार् is shared with baseline’s तारण). Render तारणारा (tāraṇārā, “the one who saves/delivers”). NEVER मोक्षदाता or मुक्तिदाता (titles associated with Vitthal/deities granting Hindu liberation). This new entry must be added to translation memory and flagged for theologian review per the escalation protocol (new Critical term).

Titus 2:14

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶνedōken heauton hyper hēmōn”gave himself for/on behalf of us”Self-giving, substitutionary sacrifice”gave himself for us” (all versions)Christ’s atoning self-sacrifice is the ground of the redemption named next — deliberate, voluntary, substitutionary.HIGH.
λυτρώσηται (λυτρόω)lytrōsētai”might ransom/redeem”To free by payment of a price; deliverance from bondage”redeem” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Redemption from moral bondage (ἀνομία), not merely social or political liberation.HIGH — new term. Render उद्धार करावा (uddhār karāvā, “might deliver/redeem”). Avoid मुक्त करणे as primary verb (root shared with forbidden मुक्ती); उद्धार keeps clear distance from the Warkari-Hindu liberation category.
ἀνομίας (ἀνομία)anomias”lawlessness”Living without regard to God’s law/order; moral disorder”lawlessness” (ESV/NIV), “iniquity” (KJV)The condition from which believers are redeemed — built on the νόμος root already governed by baseline’s नियमशास्त्र.MEDIUM-HIGH.
καθαρίσῃ (καθαρίζω)katharisē”might cleanse/purify”Ritual and moral cleansing”purify” (ESV/NIV), “purify” (KJV)Christ’s redemptive purpose includes purification for a purpose — forming a people, not merely erasing guilt.MEDIUM. शुद्ध करावे (śuddha karāve). Note: unlike baseline’s caution against शुद्ध for “holy” (ritual-purity risk), here the verb legitimately describes cleansing from moral defilement as Christ’s redemptive act; retain with a clarifying translator note distinguishing from Hindu ritual purification (snan/tirtha) practices.
λαὸν περιούσιονlaon periousion”a people for [his] own possession”A treasured, distinctly-owned people (echoes LXX Exodus 19:5, Deuteronomy 7:6)“a people for his own possession” (ESV), “a peculiar people” (KJV), “his very own people” (NIV)Echoes OT covenant-people language, now applied to the church across ethnic/social lines.MEDIUM.
ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργωνzēlōtēn kalōn ergōn”zealous for good works”Eager, passionate devotion toward good deeds”zealous for good works” (ESV/NASB), “zealous of good works” (KJV)First major statement of Titus’s “good works” refrain — the redeemed people’s defining trait is eagerness for good deeds, NOT the ground of their redemption.CRITICAL. आवेशी / चांगल्या कामांविषयी आवेशी (āveśī, “zealous/eager for good works”), paired with चांगली कामे (see below). This positive command must sit alongside 3:5’s negative “not by works” without contradiction — see full note under 3:5 and in the glossary.
καλῶν ἔργων (καλός ἔργον)kalōn ergōn”good/noble works”Morally excellent, beautiful deeds”good works,” “good deeds”Central recurring phrase across the whole letter (1:16; 2:7,14; 3:1,8,14) naming the visible fruit that flows from grace, never its cause.CRITICAL — new term, most-repeated phrase in Titus. Render चांगली कामे (cāṅglī kāme, “good deeds/works”) — a plain Marathi phrase, deliberately NOT सत्कर्म or पुण्यकर्म, which carry the Hindu/Buddhist merit-earning connotation of कर्म as a cosmic ledger. Every occurrence requires care that “good works” is fruit-language, never merit-language.

Titus 2:15

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
λάλειlalei”speak”Plain instruction to teach/proclaim”speak” (all versions)Titus is commanded to publicly teach these things — sound doctrine is to be spoken, not privately held.LOW. बोल (bol).
παρακάλει (παρακαλέω)parakalei”exhort, encourage, urge”Encouragement or entreaty depending on context”encourage,” “exhort”Pastoral encouragement toward the conduct just described.LOW — [BASELINE REUSE] उत्तेजन देणे.
ἔλεγχε (ἐλέγχω)elenche”reprove, rebuke, expose”To correct by exposing fault”rebuke,” “reprove”Corrective authority paired with encouragement — sound doctrine requires both.MEDIUM.
ἐπιταγῆς (ἐπιταγή)epitagēs”command, authority, order”Authoritative injunction”authority” (ESV/NIV), “authority” (KJV)Titus’s teaching ministry carries delegated apostolic authority, not mere personal opinion.MEDIUM. अधिकाराने (adhikārāne).
περιφρονείτω (περιφρονέω)periphroneitō”let [no one] despise/disregard”Contemptuous dismissal”disregard,” “despise”A warning against undermining Titus’s authority — relevant to the letter’s broader concern for orderly, respected church leadership.LOW.

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
Ὑπομίμνῃσκεhypomimnēske”remind”To bring to remembrance”remind” (all versions)Submission to authority is framed as something believers already know but need reminding of — not a novel imposition.LOW.
ἀρχαῖς ἐξουσίαιςarchais exousiais”rulers, authorities”Civil governing powers, offices of rule”rulers and authorities” (ESV/NIV), “principalities and powers” (KJV, archaic)Instruction regarding civil government, parallel to Romans 13 — believers’ posture toward secular rule.MEDIUM-HIGH. Given Maharashtra’s post-colonial and post-caste-reform political consciousness, this must be handled with care — it is not a blanket endorsement of any particular unjust regime but a general posture toward civil order, consistent with baseline’s “government/authority” native-speaker-review flag.
ὑποτάσσεσθαι (ὑποτάσσω)hypotassesthai”to subject oneself, submit”Voluntary ordering of oneself under another’s authority; NOT necessarily forced subjugation”be subject to” (ESV/NIV), “be subject” (KJV)Central term for the curriculum doctrine “Submission to Authority” — recurs at 2:5 (wives), 2:9 (slaves), 3:1 (rulers).HIGH — new term, recurring across doctrine. अधीन राहणे (adhīn rāhaṇe, “to remain under/submit to”). Must never be phrased so as to echo a fatalistic, karma-determined subordination to one’s station (parallel to baseline’s caution on providence and caste-status framing); this is a voluntary, gospel-motivated posture, not a metaphysical destiny.
πειθαρχεῖν (πειθαρχέω)peitharchein”to obey, be obedient to authority”Compliance with authority, often civic/legal”be obedient” (ESV/KJV), “be obedient” (NIV)Reinforces ὑποτάσσω with active compliance.HIGH. आज्ञापालन करणे (āgnāpālan karaṇe), built on baseline’s आज्ञापालन root from obedience_of_faith.
πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἑτοίμους εἶναιpros pan ergon agathon hetoimous einai”to be ready for every good work”Readiness/eagerness for good deeds”ready for every good work” (all versions)Good works again named as the outward posture of the grace-trained believer — now in the civic sphere.CRITICAL — [see 2:14 entry].

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
βλασφημεῖν (βλασφημέω)blasphēmein”to slander, revile”Verbal abuse/defamation (of people here, not God)“speak evil of,” “slander”Grace-trained speech avoids slander even of civic opponents.LOW.
ἀμάχους (ἄμαχος)amachous”not quarrelsome, peaceable”Avoiding contention/strife”peaceable,” “not quarrelsome”Connects to the letter’s broader concern for avoiding divisive controversies.LOW. भांडखोर नसणे (bhāṇḍakhor nasaṇe).
ἐπιεικεῖς (ἐπιεικής)epieikeis”gentle, reasonable, considerate”Forbearing, yielding disposition”gentle,” “considerate”Positive social virtue expected of grace-trained believers.LOW. सौम्य असणे (saumya asaṇe).
πραΰτητα (πραΰτης)prautēta”gentleness, meekness”Strength under control, mild disposition”gentleness,” “meekness”Paired with ἐπιεικής to describe comprehensive social gentleness “toward all people” — universal in scope again.LOW. नम्रता (namratā).

Titus 3:3

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
ἀνόητοι (ἀνόητος)anoētoi”foolish, senseless”Lacking spiritual understanding”foolish”Paul includes himself (“we too”) — this is not a caste- or status-linked description but a universal pre-conversion condition.HIGH. मूर्ख (mūrkh). Must be read alongside universal_human_accountability: this describes ALL believers’ past state regardless of social background, never a birth-status judgment.
ἀπειθεῖς (ἀπειθής)apeitheis”disobedient”Resistant to God’s authority/truth”disobedient”Contrasts with the obedience/submission now expected in the redeemed life.MEDIUM. आज्ञा न मानणारे (āgnā na mānṇāre).
πλανώμενοι (πλανάω, passive)planōmenoi”being led astray, deceived”Wandering off course, deceived”led astray,” “deceived”Describes the helpless, deceived condition prior to grace — not a moral failing chosen freely but a state of bondage.MEDIUM. भरकटलेले (bharakaṭlele).
δουλεύοντες (δουλεύω)douleuontes”enslaved to, serving as a slave”Being under the mastery of something”enslaved to,” “slaves to”Negative use of the δοῦλος root — enslaved to passions, contrasted with the positive “slave of God” identity (1:1). Requires disambiguation.HIGH. वासनांच्या दास्यत्वात असलेले (vāsanāncyā dāsyatvāt asalele, “in bondage/slavery to desires”). Flag: contrast explicitly with देवाचा दास (positive, willing service to God) so the two uses of “slave” language are not conflated.
ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖςepithymiais kai hēdonais”passions and pleasures”Desires and sensory pleasures, often morally loaded”passions and pleasures”Describes the driving forces of the unredeemed life.LOW-MEDIUM.
κακίᾳ καὶ φθόνῳkakia kai phthonō”malice and envy”Ill-will and covetous resentment”malice and envy”Relational sins named specifically.LOW.
στυγητοί / μισοῦντες ἀλλήλουςstygētoi / misountes allēlous”hateful / hating one another”Deserving hatred / actively hating each other”hated by others…hating one another”The climax of the pre-grace condition — mutual hatred, directly contrasted with the “loving-kindness” (φιλανθρωπία) of v.4.LOW.

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
χρηστότηςchrēstotēs”kindness, goodness”Benevolent disposition in action”kindness”God’s character in action toward sinners — reverses the “hating one another” of v.3.MEDIUM — new term. उपकारीपणा / दयाळूपणा (upakārīpaṇā / dayāḷūpaṇā).
φιλανθρωπίαphilanthrōpia”love for mankind”Benevolent love directed at humanity broadly”love for mankind” (ESV), “loving kindness” (KJV)Describes God’s own posture, not a human ethical achievement or social-reform program.MEDIUM-HIGH — new term. मानवप्रेम (mānavaprem, “love for humankind”). Caution: must not be conflated with humanitarian/social-uplift movements as an end in themselves (parallel to baseline’s christ_centered_ministry caution) — this is God’s own saving disposition revealed in Christ, prior to and generative of any human philanthropic response.
ἐπεφάνηepephanē(see 2:11)“appeared”Repeats the epiphany theme: God’s kindness, like grace (2:11), “appeared” historically in Christ.CRITICAL — [see 2:11].
σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦsōtēros hēmōn theou”of God our Savior”“God our Savior”Here σωτήρ is applied to God the Father (paralleling 2:13’s application to Christ) — the shared title underlines the unity of the Father’s and Son’s saving work.CRITICAL — [see 2:13] तारणारा.

This is the doctrinal center of “Salvation by Grace not Works” and “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.”

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMarathi Rendering & Risk
οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖςouk ex ergōn tōn en dikaiosynē ha epoiēsamen hēmeis”not from works [done] in righteousness which we did”Explicit exclusion of human moral achievement as the ground of salvation”not because of works done by us in righteousness” (ESV), “not by works of righteousness which we have done” (KJV)The single clearest negative statement in Titus of the “Salvation by Grace not Works” doctrine — directly parallels Romans 3–4 and Ephesians 2:8-9, and reuses baseline’s imputed-righteousness contrast.CRITICAL. This clause must be rendered with maximal clarity, since it stands in direct, deliberate tension with 2:14/3:1/3:8’s positive commands to be “zealous for good works” — the tension itself (works are NOT the ground of salvation but ARE its necessary fruit) is the doctrine and must not be smoothed away in translation.
ἔλεοςeleos”mercy”Compassion shown to those in need/distress, especially the undeserving”mercy”The positive ground of salvation, parallel to and distinguished from χάρις (grace): mercy addresses human misery, grace addresses human unworthiness.HIGH — new term. दया (dayā). Distinguish from करुणा (karuṇā), the specific Buddhist ethical virtue of compassion cultivated as one of the four brahmavihara/sublime states — God’s ἔλεος here is his own initiating disposition toward the helpless, not a cultivated inner virtue.
ἔσωσεν (σῴζω)esōsen”saved”Deliverance from peril/death”saved”CRITICAL — [BASELINE REUSE] तारण करणे / तारले.
λουτροῦ (λουτρόν)loutrou”washing, bath”A washing, ritual or literal; associated with baptism”washing” (all versions)The visible/sacramental sign associated with the inward reality of regeneration — widely understood in the church’s tradition as connected to baptism, though the text emphasizes the inward reality it signifies.HIGH. स्नान (snān, “washing/bath”). Note: use स्नान generically for “washing,” never linking it exclusively to Hindu ritual bathing (snan/tirtha-yatra purification); a translator note distinguishing baptismal washing from ritual bathing for merit is recommended.
παλιγγενεσίας (παλιγγενεσία)palingenesias”regeneration, new birth” (lit. “again-birth/genesis”)The decisive, one-time spiritual re-origination of a person by God; NT hapax legomenon here and Matthew 19:28 (of cosmic renewal)“regeneration” (ESV/NASB/KJV), “rebirth” (NIV)The theological name for the doctrine “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit” — a definite, punctiliar, divinely-caused new beginning of spiritual life, received once, not a stage in a repeating cycle.CRITICAL — new term, the single highest-risk term in Titus. Render नवजन्म (navjanma, “new birth”) — deliberately NOT पुनर्जन्म (punarjanma). This distinction must be preserved absolutely: पुनर्जन्म in Marathi names the Hindu doctrine of cyclical rebirth across lifetimes according to karma (and is already forbidden in baseline for “resurrection” for the same reason), while नवजन्म names a single, once-for-all spiritual re-origination worked by the Holy Spirit within this one life — it does not imply, continue, or interact with any cycle of births. This term requires a mandatory translator note on every occurrence and human theologian review, consistent with baseline’s resurrection_of_christ precedent. Also distinguish from the Buddhist technical पुनर्भव (arising of a new configuration of aggregates); नवजन्म affirms a continuous personal identity transformed by God, not an impersonal re-arising.
ἀνακαινώσεως (ἀνακαίνωσις)anakainōseōs”renewal”Ongoing renovation/making-new”renewal” (ESV/NIV), “renewing” (KJV)The Spirit’s continuing renewing work, distinguished from the one-time regeneration named just before it — together they describe entrance into new life (nevajanma) and its ongoing renewal.HIGH — new term. नूतनीकरण (nūtanīkaraṇ). Distinguish from self-directed moral self-improvement or yogic/ascetic renewal practices — this is the Spirit’s own action, paralleling baseline’s sanctification caution.
πνεύματος ἁγίουpneumatos hagiou”of the Holy Spirit”“Holy Spirit”The divine agent of both regeneration and renewal.CRITICAL — [BASELINE REUSE] पवित्र आत्मा.

PART 2 — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY

Chapter 1 (Titus 1:1–16)

Chapter 1 introduces the letter’s salutation (1:1–4), elder/overseer qualifications (1:5–9), and warning against false teachers (1:10–16). This chapter contains substantial new theological vocabulary not covered in the core passage.

TermTransliterationLiteral/Semantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological Meaning in TitusMarathi Rendering & Risk
δοῦλος θεοῦdoulos theou”slave/bondservant of God” — total, willing belonging to a master”servant of God” (NIV), “bondservant of God” (ESV)Paul’s self-designation of total submission to and ownership by God, framing his apostolic authority.HIGH — new term. देवाचा दास (devācā dāsa). Caution: Warkari bhakti devotees commonly self-designate as “दास” of Vitthal (e.g., Tukaram’s self-reference as पांडुरंगाचा दास). Requires a translator note clarifying that Paul’s total belonging to God through Christ is not devotional bhakti self-submission to a chosen personal deity but bond-service to the one sovereign Lord who has purchased him.
ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦapostolos Iēsou Christou”apostle of Jesus Christ""apostle”Delegated, commissioned authority.MEDIUM — [BASELINE REUSE] प्रेषित.
ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦeklektōn theou”of God’s elect/chosen ones""God’s elect” (ESV/NIV), “God’s elect” (KJV)Paul’s ministry serves God’s sovereignly chosen people.HIGH — [BASELINE REUSE root] देवाची निवड.
ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείαςepignōsis alētheias”full/precise knowledge of the truth""knowledge of the truth”Saving faith includes real cognitive apprehension of gospel truth, not vague religious sentiment.MEDIUM. सत्याचे ज्ञान (satyāce jñān).
κατ’ εὐσέβειανkat’ eusebeian”according to/for godliness""which accords with godliness” (ESV)Faith and truth are oriented toward godly living — introduces the letter’s godliness theme from its opening line.HIGH — new term [see also 2:12]. सुभक्तीनुसार (subhaktīnusār).
εὐσέβειαeusebeia”godliness, true piety” — reverent, obedient devotion to God expressed in conduct”godliness”A major recurring term across Titus (1:1; 2:12) naming the practical, conduct-shaping fruit of sound doctrine — a key term for the curriculum’s overall theme.HIGH — new term. सुभक्ति (subhakti). Established convention in Marathi Christian usage for “godliness/true piety.” Distinguish carefully from भक्ति alone (Warkari devotional reverence toward Vitthal, already flagged in baseline as an unsuitable rendering for “faith” due to lacking an exclusive object) — सुभक्ति here must always be tied explicitly to reverence for the one true God revealed in Christ, never presented as a generic devotional virtue transferable to any object of worship.
ἀσέβειαasebeia”ungodliness""ungodliness”Opposite of εὐσέβεια.HIGH — [see 2:12] अभक्ती.
ἀψευδὴς θεόςapseudēs theos”the God who does not lie""God, who never lies” (NIV)Grounds the reliability of the gospel promise in God’s own truthful character.MEDIUM.

κήρυγμαkērygma”proclamation, preaching""preaching”The public, authoritative announcement of the gospel entrusted to Paul.LOW-MEDIUM. उपदेश / घोषणा (upadeś / ghoṣaṇā).
ἐπιταγὴν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦepitagēn tou sōtēros hēmōn theou”by the command of God our Savior""by command of God our Savior”Paul’s apostleship is by direct divine mandate.CRITICAL — [see 2:13] तारणारा.
γνήσιον τέκνονgnēsion teknon”true/genuine child""true child”Titus’s spiritual son-relationship to Paul, establishing the letter’s pastoral warmth and authority.LOW. खरा पुत्र (kharā putra).
κοινὴν πίστινkoinēn pistin”common/shared faith""common faith”Faith shared between Paul and Titus (and by extension all believers) — same content, not individually variable belief.MEDIUM — [BASELINE REUSE root] विश्वास.
πρεσβύτεροςpresbyteros”elder” — an office of recognized, seasoned leadership in the local congregation”elder”The office Titus is to establish in every town — one of the two offices named in this chapter (with ἐπίσκοπος), used interchangeably here for the same role.MEDIUM — new term. वडील (vaḍīl). Risk: वडील is also the ordinary Marathi word for “father”/“elder family member,” creating potential ambiguity; church contexts and capitalization/qualifying phrases (मंडळीतील वडील, “elder of the congregation”) should be used consistently to disambiguate.
ἐπίσκοποςepiskopos”overseer, guardian""overseer,” “bishop” (KJV)Used in 1:7 for the same office just called πρεσβύτερος in 1:5 — the terms are synonymous in Titus, not two distinct hierarchical ranks.MEDIUM — new term. अध्यक्ष / पर्यवेक्षक (adhyakṣa / paryavekṣak). Avoid the transliteration बिशप, which in later church usage implies an institutional hierarchical office beyond what Titus 1 describes; a translator note should clarify the terms’ interchangeability here.
ἀνέγκλητοςanenklētos”blameless, above reproach""above reproach”Baseline moral qualification for eldership.LOW. निर्दोष (nirdoṣ).
μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρmias gynaikos anēr”a one-woman man” (lit. “husband of one wife”)“husband of one wife”Marital faithfulness/monogamy as an eldership qualification.MEDIUM.
τέκνα πιστάtekna pista”believing/faithful children""children who believe” (ESV), “faithful children” (KJV)An elder’s household should reflect the gospel’s transforming effect.MEDIUM — [BASELINE REUSE root] विश्वासू.
ἀσωτίαasōtia”debauchery, dissipation, reckless living""debauchery,” “riot” (KJV)Disqualifying vice in a candidate’s children.LOW. स्वैराचार (svairācār).
ἀνυπότακτοςanypotaktos”insubordinate, rebellious, not submissive""insubordinate,” “unruly”Direct antonym of ὑποτάσσω (submission) — ties elder-qualification language to the letter’s broader submission theme.HIGH — [cross-ref ὑποτάσσω, 3:1].
αὐθάδης, ὀργίλος, πάροινος, πλήκτης, αἰσχροκερδήςauthadēs, orgilos, paroinos, plēktēs, aischrokerdēs”self-willed / quick-tempered / given to wine / violent / greedy for [shameful] gain""arrogant,” “quick-tempered,” “drunkard,” “violent,” “greedy for gain”A vice list of disqualifying character traits for elders.LOW, each.
φιλόξενος, φιλάγαθοςphiloxenos, philagathos”hospitable / loving what is good""hospitable,” “a lover of good”Positive qualifications paired with the vice list.LOW, each.
σώφρωνsōphrōn(see 2:12 family)“self-controlled,” “disciplined”Recurs as an elder qualification, linking eldership to the letter’s grace-trained self-control theme.HIGH — [see 2:12] संयमी.
δίκαιος, ὅσιος, ἐγκρατήςdikaios, hosios, enkratēs”just/righteous / holy-devout / self-disciplined""upright,” “holy,” “disciplined”Three further character terms; ὅσιος is distinct from ἅγιος (pavitra) — a devotional/reverent holiness rather than the set-apart consecration ἅγιος names.MEDIUM, each. नीतिमान (reuse नीतिमत्त्व root); भक्तिनिष्ठ (bhaktiniṣṭh, note distinct from पवित्र); आत्मसंयमी (ātmasaṃyamī).
ἀντεχόμενος τοῦ πιστοῦ λόγουantechomenos tou pistou logou”holding fast the trustworthy word""holding firm to the trustworthy word” (ESV)An elder must be doctrinally anchored, able to teach and to refute error.MEDIUM.
διδασκαλία ὑγιαίνουσαdidaskalia hygiainousa”sound/healthy teaching” (ὑγιαίνω, “to be healthy,” used metaphorically of doctrine)“sound doctrine” (ESV/KJV/NIV)Central curriculum term “Sound Doctrine and Good Works” — doctrine that produces spiritual health, contrasted with the “myths” and disputes of false teachers.HIGH — new term, KEY curriculum term, recurring (1:9; 2:1; 2:8’s “sound speech”). सुदृढ शिकवण (sudṛḍha śikvaṇ, “robust/healthy teaching”). Must be distinguished from any generic body of religious teaching — this is doctrine that visibly produces the moral and spiritual health described throughout the letter (per baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture caution regarding Warkari abhang poetry and Buddhist Dhamma as alternative teaching-authority claims).
ματαιολόγος, φρεναπάτηςmataiologos, phrenapatēs”empty talker / deceiver""empty talkers,” “deceivers”Description of the false teachers Titus must silence.LOW, each.
περιτομή (οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς)peritomē”circumcision [party]""circumcision party”Judaizing false teachers requiring OT background to understand.MEDIUM.
Ἰουδαϊκοὶ μῦθοιIoudaikoi mythoi”Jewish myths/fables""Jewish myths”Ties to the “Avoiding Divisive Controversies” doctrine — speculative, non-apostolic teaching to be rejected.MEDIUM. यहुदी दंतकथा (yahudī dantakathā).
ἐντολαὶ ἀνθρώπωνentolai anthrōpōn”commandments of men""commands of men”Human-invented religious rules contrasted with sound apostolic doctrine.MEDIUM. माणसांच्या आज्ञा (māṇasāṃcyā āgnā).
καθαρός / μεμιαμμένοςkatharos / memiammenos”pure / defiled""pure…defiled”Titus 1:15 contrasts inward purity with defilement of “mind and conscience,” a moral-relational point, not ritual purity legislation.MEDIUM, each. शुद्ध / अशुद्ध — flagged per baseline’s caution that शुद्ध leans toward ritual-purity connotations; a translator note should clarify this verse concerns moral/relational purity of conscience, not ritual observance.
νοῦς, συνείδησιςnous, syneidēsis”mind, conscience""mind,” “conscience”The inner faculties defiled by unbelief in false teachers.LOW-MEDIUM, each.
ἔργοις ἀρνοῦνταιergois arnountai”deny by [their] works/deeds""deny him by their works”Negative counterpoint to the letter’s positive good-works theme — false profession is exposed by ungodly deeds.HIGH — [cross-ref good works]. कृतीने नाकारतात (kṛtīne nākāratāt).
βδελυκτοί, ἀδόκιμοι πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθόνbdelyktoi, adokimoi pros pan ergon agathon”detestable, disqualified/unfit for any good work""detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work”Closes the chapter on the same good-works measuring rod used positively elsewhere — false teachers fail this test entirely.HIGH.

Cultural-handling note (not a doctrinal risk): Titus 1:12 quotes a Cretan poet’s (Epimenides’) ethnic stereotype (“Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons”). This is a quoted rhetorical citation, not Paul’s own ethnic judgment. Translator guidance: render as a quotation clearly attributed to “one of their own prophets” (as the text itself frames it, v.12), with a footnote available for teaching contexts to prevent the line from being read as a blanket biblical endorsement of ethnic stereotyping — Medium cultural-sensitivity handling, Low doctrinal risk.

γενεαλογίαgenealogia”genealogy""genealogies”Speculative ancestral disputes (possibly Jewish or Gnostic-precursor speculation) to be avoided.MEDIUM. वंशावळी (vaṃśāvaḷī). Note: distinct from OT covenant-genealogy affirmations (e.g., “seed of David,” already in baseline) — this is a warning against speculative, divisive genealogical disputation, not a devaluation of salvation-historical lineage. Given the live sensitivity of lineage/caste-genealogy discourse in Maharashtra, a clarifying note is advisable so this verse is not misapplied to devalue ancestry-related identity concerns unrelated to the text’s actual target (speculative religious disputes).
