Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 2 Thessalonians (English → Marathi)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from all three chapters of 2 Thessalonians. Terms marked Baseline Reuse are taken exactly, without modification, from the Romans translation_memory.json. Terms marked New must be carried forward into Phase 1 Steps 8-9 for formal addition to translation memory and the doctrine risk registry. Risk tiers and review routing follow the same definitions established in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.

B. New Terms Introduced by 2 Thessalonians
| English Term | Greek | Transliteration | Marathi Rendering | Risk | Doctrine | Core Passage / Chapter Refs | Key Risk Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day of the Lord | ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου | hēmera tou kyriou | प्रभूचा दिवस | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:2 | Must not merge with Hindu cyclical yuga-ending/Kalki expectation or Buddhist non-final cyclical time; unique, final, personal day of divine reckoning. |
| Man of Lawlessness | ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας | ho anthrōpos tēs anomias | अनाचाराचा मनुष्य | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3,8 | Never रेंडर with धर्म/अधर्म (caste-dharma collision); never used as a communal/political slur against a rival group. |
| Son of Destruction | ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας | ho huios tēs apōleias | नाशाचा पुत्र | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3 | Structurally parallel to देवाचा पुत्र (Son of God) — must remain sharply distinguished; opposite referent (doom vs. divine sonship). |
| Apostasy / The Rebellion | ἀποστασία | apostasia | विश्वासत्याग | High | The Day of the Lord | 2:3 | Not generic “religious conversion” (धर्मांतर, politically charged); a decisive falling away from true faith in Christ. |
| The Restrainer | τὸ κατέχον / ὁ κατέχων | to katechon / ho katechōn | अडवणारे / अडवणारा | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:6-7 | Preserve the Greek’s own interpretive ambiguity (impersonal/personal); do not prematurely resolve a debated referent. |
| Mystery of Lawlessness | τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας | to mystērion tēs anomias | अनाचाराचे रहस्य | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:7 | ”रहस्य” must not read as esoteric guru-transmitted secret knowledge; it is a disclosed, Scripture-warned reality, not an initiatory teaching. |
| Coming / Parousia | παρουσία / ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας | parousia / epiphaneia tēs parousias | आगमन | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:1,8,9 | Never assimilate to अवतार-descent or Bodhisattva-style repeated return; a single, final, visible return of the risen Christ. |
| Gathering Together | ἐπισυναγωγή | episynagōgē | एकत्र होणे | Medium | The Day of the Lord | 2:1 | Keep relational/spatial; avoid abstraction suggesting absorption into an impersonal whole. |
| Righteous Judgment | δικαία κρίσις | dikaia krisis | देवाचा नीतिमान न्याय | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:5-6; 2:12 | Personal God’s judicial verdict, not an impersonal karmic ledger; foundational to the doctrine of God’s Righteous Judgment throughout the book. |
| Vengeance / Retribution | ἐκδίκησις | ekdikēsis | सूड / प्रतिफळ | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:8 | God’s own prerogative alone; never a model for human vengeance-seeking; not an impersonal karmic backlash. |
| Eternal Destruction | ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος | olethros aiōnios | सार्वकालिक नाश | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:9 | Final and unending; not a temporary hell-stage within a rebirth cycle, and not a Buddhist cessation framework. |
| Affliction | θλῖψις | thlipsis | क्लेश | High | Perseverance under Persecution | 1:4,6 | Real suffering, not softened to generic “difficulty.” |
| Persecution | διωγμός | diōgmos | छळ | High | Perseverance under Persecution | 1:4 | Culturally live term given contemporary experience of Indian Christian converts; name plainly. |
| Endurance / Perseverance | ὑπομονή | hypomonē | सहनशीलता | High | Perseverance under Persecution | 1:4 | Hope-fueled steadfastness, not Stoic detachment or Buddhist self-cultivated equanimity. |
| Love | ἀγάπη | agapē | प्रीती | Medium-High | (supports Perseverance/Fellowship) | 1:3; 2:10 (love of truth) | Distinguish from Warkari/Vaishnav bhakti-prema devotional love toward a chosen personal deity. |
| Love of the Truth | ἡ ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας | hē agapē tēs alētheias | सत्यावरील प्रीती | High | The Day of the Lord / Judgment | 2:10 | Settled love for the specific gospel truth, not generic open-mindedness. |
| Deception of Unrighteousness | ἀπάτη ἀδικίας | apatē adikias | अनीतीची फसवणूक | Medium-High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:10 | Morally corrupt deceit, not neutral error. |
| Signs and Wonders (false) | σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα (ψεύδους) | sēmeia kai terata (pseudous) | खोटी चिन्हे व अद्भुते | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:9 | Must be marked counterfeit/Satanic; not a general endorsement of “signs and wonders,” and not conflated with contemporary godman/guru miracle claims. |
| Working of Satan | ἐνέργεια τοῦ Σατανᾶ | energeia tou Satana | सैतानाचे सामर्थ्य | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:9 | Use सामर्थ्य (never शक्ती, per baseline); Satan’s power is derivative and limited, never equal to God’s. |
| Strong Delusion / Working of Error | ἐνέργεια πλάνης | energeia planēs | भ्रमाचे सामर्थ्य | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:11 | God’s judicial hardening in response to prior rejection of truth; not arbitrary caprice, not impersonal karma. |
| Judged / Condemned | κρίνω | krinō | दोषी ठरवणे | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:12 | Personal divine verdict; core term for this doctrine alongside देवाचा नीतिमान न्याय. |
| Unrighteousness | ἀδικία | adikia | अनीती | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:10,12 | Structural negation of baseline नीतिमत्त्व; preserve the righteousness/unrighteousness contrast. |
| Obey the Gospel | ὑπακούω τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ | hypakouō tō euangeliō | शुभवर्तमानाचे आज्ञापालन | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:8 | Related to but distinct from baseline विश्वासाचे आज्ञापालन; keep the same compound-phrase family. |
| Tradition(s) | παράδοσις | paradosis | परंपरा (qualify as “प्रेषितांकडून मिळालेली परंपरा”) | Critical | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:15; 3:6 | Highest-risk term in the book: collides directly with sampradaya/guru-parampara transmission of authority in Warkari and broader Indian religious tradition; must always be qualified as the specific apostolic deposit about Christ, never left as unqualified generic “tradition.” |
| The Evil One | ὁ πονηρός | ho ponēros | दुष्ट (सैतान) | High | Perseverance under Persecution | 3:3 | Personal, defeated-yet-active adversary; not impersonal evil, misfortune, or folk “evil eye” (दृष्ट/नजर). |
| Temple of God | ναός τοῦ θεοῦ | naos tou theou | देवाचे मंदिर | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:4 | Denotes God’s own sanctuary; interpretively contested referent (future temple vs. church) — flag for reviewer, do not resolve via translation choice. |
| Self-Exaltation / Adversary | ὑπεραίρομαι / ἀντικείμενος | hyperairomai / antikeimenos | स्वतःला उंच करणारा / प्रतिपक्षी | Medium-High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:4 | Counterfeit self-deification, direct contrast to Christ’s true, legitimate divine Sonship. |
| Admonish | νουθετέω | noutheteō | समजावून बजावणे | Low-Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:15 | Distinct from baseline’s उत्तेजन देणे (exhort/encourage); carries corrective-warning sense. |
| Idle / Disorderly Conduct | ἀτάκτως (περιπατέω) | ataktōs | अव्यवस्थितपणे चालणे | Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:6,11 | Practical church-discipline term; moderate doctrinal risk. |
| Breath of His Mouth | πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος | pneuma tou stomatos | मुखाचा श्वास | Medium-High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:8 | Same Greek root as पवित्र आत्मा but unrelated referent (“breath,” not Spirit); render with श्वास, never आत्मा alone, to avoid confusion. |
| Chosen (verb, God’s choice) | αἱρέω (εἵλατο) | heilato | देवाची निवड | High | Election (reused doctrine) | 2:13 | Same caution as baseline: not karma-birth framework. |
| Appointed Time | καιρός | kairos | योग्य वेळ / नेमलेली वेळ | Medium | Providence (adjacent) | 2:6 | Personal God’s sovereign timetable, not impersonal fate/karma-scheduling. |

D. Chapters Reviewed with No New Load-Bearing Vocabulary
None. All three chapters of 2 Thessalonians (1, 2, 3) contribute new load-bearing theological vocabulary to this curriculum, as documented in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md. Every chapter has been analyzed in full; no chapter is silently omitted.
E. Cross-Reference Note
This glossary must be read alongside the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json (Romans). All Baseline Reuse terms above are enforced exactly as recorded there. All New terms above must be formally added to translation memory in Phase 1 Steps 8-9 before any Phase 2 segment translation of 2 Thessalonians begins, per the Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: कृपा
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कर्मफळ, पुण्य, स्वतःच्या प्रयत्नाने मिळवलेले
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in every chapter’s greeting/benediction (1:2,12; 2:16; 3:18). In 2:16 grace grounds ‘eternal comfort and good hope’ — must read as unearned, Christ-specific gift, never Warkari-style devotional favor earned through bhakti fervor nor a concept requiring self-cultivation as in Navayana Buddhist ethics.
Salvation
Approved rendering: तारण
Transliteration: tāraṇ
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मोक्ष, मुक्ती, निर्वाण
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2:10 (refusal: ‘so be saved’) and 2:13 (accomplishment: ‘God chose you… to be saved’). NEVER मोक्ष/मुक्ती (Warkari-Hindu liberation) or निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation) — deliverance given by a personal God through Christ, in direct contrast to the deception and destruction of 2:10-12.
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभू
Transliteration: prabhū
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Especially critical in this book: the man of lawlessness sets himself up as a rival to every claimant to worship (2:4), so Christ’s प्रभुत्व must read as uniquely, permanently supreme — never one lordship among rival lordships, and never assimilated to Vitthal or another beloved personal deity.
Jesus
Approved rendering: येशू
Transliteration: Yeśū
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईसा
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout in the combined title ‘the Lord Jesus Christ’; येशू is the Marathi Christian standard, never ईसा.
God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvar
Doctrine: Deity of God
Rejected alternatives: देव, भगवान
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, WITH ONE DOCUMENTED EXCEPTION specific to this book: in 2:4 (‘every so-called god or object of worship’), the Greek θεόν is generic/lower-case (‘any claimed deity’) and the correct Marathi rendering there is the ordinary word देव, NOT परमेश्वर, since the lawless one’s claim is false. परमेश्वर is reserved for the true God everywhere else in this letter.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: परमात्मा, ब्रह्म
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. The agent of sanctification in 2:13. Must not be confused with the unrelated occurrence of πνεῦμα (‘breath’) in 2:8 — see breath_of_his_mouth below, which must use श्वास, never आत्मा.
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: निर्माता
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Named in the greeting (1:1,2) and benediction (2:16).
Righteousness
Approved rendering: नीतिमत्त्व
Transliteration: nītimattva
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Serves in this book as the structural root for two new compounds: देवाचा नीतिमान न्याय (righteous judgment, 1:5-6; 2:12) and its antonym अनीती (unrighteousness, 2:10,12). Never धर्म.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभूचा दिवस
Transliteration: prabhūcā divas
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: शेवटचा काळ (generic ‘end times’, too vague), युगांत (loaded with Hindu yuga-cycle ending associations)
Original: ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:2. Unique, unrepeatable, personally-administered day of divine reckoning by the one true God through Christ. Never assimilated to the Hindu cyclical yuga scheme (Kali Yuga’s end, Kalki’s dharma-restoration) nor to a Buddhist framework in which no single historical moment carries final, unrepeatable significance. Teach alongside आगमन and पुनरुत्थान (baseline) as one integrated linear-historical hope. Tense precision required: Paul denies the Day’s premature/already-arrived status (2:2), not its certainty.
Man Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: अनाचाराचा मनुष्य
Transliteration: anācārācā manuṣya
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: अधर्माचा मनुष्य (rejected: collides with caste-linked dharma, explicitly renounced by Ambedkarite Buddhist converts), अधर्मी मनुष्य
Original: ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:3,8. The singular, climactic human figure embodying total rebellion against God, unveiled before Christ’s return and destroyed at his coming. ἀνομία rendered with अनाचार (moral wickedness), never धर्म/अधर्म. Must never be used colloquially as a slur against a rival religious or political community, a live risk in Maharashtra’s communal rhetoric; names one specific future eschatological individual.
Parousia
Approved rendering: आगमन
Transliteration: āgaman
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: अवतार (rejected: repeatable Vaishnav avatar-descent), पारूसिया (rejected: opaque transliteration with no warrant)
Original: παρουσία / ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:1,8 (Christ’s own coming) and 2:9 (the lawless one’s ironic, counterfeit ‘coming’, same Greek root). For Christ’s coming: never assimilate to अवतार-descent or Bodhisattva-style repeated return — a single, final, bodily return of the same Jesus already raised (पुनरुत्थान). When applied to the lawless one (2:9), render distinctly enough (e.g., with a qualifying modifier such as ख्रिस्ताचे खरे आगमन for Christ’s own coming nearby) that readers do not equate the two ‘comings’ as morally neutral parallels — this is Satan’s parody, not a second true parousia. Also guard against आगमन’s routine devotional-festival usage (e.g., a deity’s ceremonial arrival at a utsav).
Righteous Judgment
Approved rendering: देवाचा नीतिमान न्याय
Transliteration: devācā nītimān nyāya
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: कर्माचा न्याय (rejected: impersonal karmic-ledger framing), नशिबाचा निकाल (rejected: impersonal fate framing)
Original: δικαία κρίσις
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 1:5-6; 2:12. God’s just, forensic evaluation and verdict over all people, grounding the Thessalonians’ hope of vindication and the outcome for the deceived. Must communicate a personal God’s own judicial verdict issued through Christ — never an impersonal, self-executing karmic ledger balancing merit/demerit across lifetimes, a framework Ambedkarite Buddhist communities in Maharashtra explicitly rejected. Prefer explicit देवाने-subject constructions over agentless passive phrasing.
Eternal Destruction
Approved rendering: सार्वकालिक नाश
Transliteration: sārvakālik nāś
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: नरकवास (rejected: suggests a temporary Hindu naraka-stage before rebirth), नाश (rejected alone: could read as merely temporary ruin — modifier सार्वकालिक must never be dropped)
Original: ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 1:9. Final, unending, conscious exclusion from God’s presence and glory. Must not be conflated with a temporary hell-realm within an ongoing rebirth cycle (Hindu naraka) nor with a Buddhist cessation framework; this is final and unending separation from a personal God, not one stage in a longer cosmic cycle.
Strong Delusion
Approved rendering: भ्रमाचे सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: bhramāce sāmarthya
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: आपोआप शिक्षा (rejected: ‘automatic punishment’, reads as impersonal karmic mechanism)
Original: ἐνέργεια πλάνης
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 2:11. God’s judicial confirmation of those who rejected the love of the truth (v.10) into the very deception they preferred. Sensitive judicial-hardening doctrine, parallel in kind to Romans 9’s hardening language; must not sound like arbitrary divine caprice, nor like an impersonal karmic mechanism automatically punishing prior choices — God’s action here is a righteous response to culpable rejection of truth already described in v.10.
Judged Condemned
Approved rendering: दोषी ठरवणे
Transliteration: doṣī ṭharavaṇe
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: शिक्षा होणे (rejected: too generic ‘to be punished’, loses forensic-verdict sense)
Original: κρίνω
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 2:12. The final, forensic verdict of condemnation on those who rejected the truth and delighted in unrighteousness. Core term for God’s Righteous Judgment; must be read as a personal God’s judicial verdict, not an impersonal karmic ledger balancing automatically across lifetimes.
Tradition
Approved rendering: परंपरा
Transliteration: paramparā
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: शिकवण अलोन (rejected: ‘teaching’ alone loses the received-by-transmission sense the Greek requires)
Original: παράδοσις
Category: Tradition
2 Thessalonians 2:15; 3:6. THE SINGLE HIGHEST COLLISION-RISK TERM IN THIS CURRICULUM. परंपरा is also the ordinary Marathi word for sampradaya, the guru-parampara chain of teacher-to-disciple transmission grounding spiritual authority across Warkari bhakti and the broader Indian guru tradition, entirely independent of any claim to divine revelation. MANDATORY: every occurrence must be qualified as प्रेषितांकडून मिळालेली परंपरा (‘the tradition received from the apostles’) at first occurrence in every document/lesson, and strongly preferred at every occurrence; never permit unqualified bare परंपरा to stand for this referent in Phase 2 output. Church discipline in 3:6-15 must be grounded explicitly in this specific apostolic deposit, not general communal custom or lineage authority.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: शुभवर्तमान
Transliteration: śubhavartamān
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: बातमी, खबर
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Thessalonians occurs at 1:8 (‘obey the gospel’) and 2:14 (‘called through our gospel to obtain glory’); sharpened here by explicit judicial stakes attached to non-obedience (1:8). Do not substitute a generic ‘good news’ gloss.
Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, भक्ति
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Thessalonians faith’s object is repeatedly specified as ‘the truth’ of the gospel (2:10,13) and is said to be ‘growing exceedingly’ amid persecution (1:3,4,11); sharpens the requirement that विश्वास name trust in a specific object, not generalized devotional reverence.
Called
Approved rendering: बोलावलेले
Transliteration: bolāvlele
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: आमंत्रित
Original: καλέω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 2:14, God ‘called’ the Thessalonians through the gospel to obtain the glory of Christ — the effectual, salvific sense, as in Romans 8:28-30.
Calling
Approved rendering: पाचारण
Transliteration: pācāraṇ
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: आवाहन
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 1:11 Paul prays God will count the Thessalonians ‘worthy of his calling’ — a sovereign summons, not devotee-initiated seeking (cf. Warkari wari pilgrimage) or a self-chosen refuge-taking vow (cf. Navayana Buddhist conversion).
Holy
Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies ‘saints’ (1:10) and the Spirit’s sanctifying work (2:13); moral and relational set-apartness, not ritual purity.
Saints
Approved rendering: पवित्र जन
Transliteration: pavitra jan
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: संत, मुनी
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Christ ‘comes to be glorified in his saints’ (1:10) — a corporate designation for all believers. Never संत, which names the revered Warkari poet-saints (Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Namdev, Eknath, Chokhamela).
Sanctification
Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरण
Transliteration: pavitrīkaraṇ
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्धीकरण
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. In 2:13, ‘sanctification of the Spirit’ paired explicitly with ‘belief of the truth’ — distinct from ritual purification and from the self-directed ethical cultivation of the Buddhist Eightfold Path.
Election
Approved rendering: देवाची निवड
Transliteration: devācī nivaḍ
Doctrine: Election
Rejected alternatives: नशीब, दैव, कर्मफळ
Original: αἱρέω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 2:13, ‘God chose you (deva-related root) as the firstfruits to be saved… from the beginning.’ Must never echo the karma-birth explanation of social standing explicitly rejected by Ambedkarite Buddhist communities.
Glory
Approved rendering: गौरव
Transliteration: gaurav
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: तेज, प्रकाश
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Christ is glorified in his saints at his coming (1:9,10,12) and believers are called ‘to obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ’ (2:14). Avoid light-only imagery that could merge with bodhi/enlightenment associations.
Law
Approved rendering: नियमशास्त्र
Transliteration: niyamśāstra
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, धम्म
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Not directly named in 2 Thessalonians but held in reserve as background reference: ἀνομία (‘lawlessness’) is deliberately NOT built on this νόμος-root Marathi word but rendered instead with अनाचार (see man_of_lawlessness below), precisely to avoid the धर्म/धम्म caste and Ambedkarite-Buddhist collision risk.
Son Of Destruction
Approved rendering: नाशाचा पुत्र
Transliteration: nāśācā putra
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: नाशवंत पुत्र, विनाशाचा मुलगा
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:3. Hebraic idiom (cf. Judas, John 17:12) naming the lawless one’s certain destiny: final destruction. Structurally identical in form to देवाचा पुत्र (Son of God, baseline Critical); must always appear with देवाचा पुत्र established or nearby in context so the antithetical relationship (doom vs. divine sonship) is unmistakable — never introduce without this contrast being pedagogically explicit.
Apostasy
Approved rendering: विश्वासत्याग
Transliteration: viśvāsatyāg
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: धर्मांतर (rejected: politically fraught ‘religious conversion’ term given Indian anti-conversion law debates), बंडखोरी (too generic/political revolt sense only)
Original: ἀποστασία
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:3. Built on the established विश्वास root. A decisive, large-scale falling away from true faith in Christ preceding the man of lawlessness’s unveiling — never rendered as ordinary religious conversion nor as mere doctrinal disagreement or doubt.
Restrainer
Approved rendering: अडवणारे / अडवणारा
Transliteration: aḍavaṇāre / aḍavaṇārā
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: पवित्र आत्मा (rejected: would prematurely resolve the debated referent), रोमी सत्ता (rejected: same reason)
Original: τὸ κατέχον / ὁ κατέχων
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:6-7. Preserve the Greek’s own grammatical ambiguity: neuter ‘thing holding back’ (अडवणारे, v.6) then masculine ‘one who restrains’ (अडवणारा, v.7). Do not add an interpretive gloss naming a specific identity (Holy Spirit, Roman order, angelic power) not present in the text itself.
Mystery Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: अनाचाराचे रहस्य
Transliteration: anācārāce rahasya
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: गुप्त शिकवण (rejected: reads as esoteric initiatory teaching)
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:7. The hidden, already-operative principle of end-times rebellion, disclosed in apostolic teaching though not yet fully unveiled. रहस्य must not read as esoteric teaching reserved for initiates in a guru-disciple transmission; this is a hidden reality already disclosed and plainly warned about in Scripture, not knowledge requiring special initiation.
Vengeance
Approved rendering: सूड / प्रतिफळ
Transliteration: sūḍ / pratiphaḷ
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: बदला (rejected: strongest colloquial ‘personal revenge/vendetta’ flavor)
Original: ἐκδίκησις
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 1:8. God’s own righteous retributive justice against those who persecute his people and reject the gospel. Must be conveyed as God’s own exclusive prerogative and righteous act, never a model for human vengeance-seeking, and never an impersonal karmic backlash; pair with a note distinguishing divine ἐκδίκησις from both human revenge and karma (cf. Romans 12:19 logic already in the baseline curriculum).
Affliction
Approved rendering: क्लेश
Transliteration: kleś
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: अडचण (rejected: too generic, ‘difficulty’), त्रास (rejected: too mild)
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Perseverance
2 Thessalonians 1:4,6. Real, present suffering and pressure endured by the Thessalonian believers under persecution. Must not be softened to generic ‘difficulty’; names real suffering for the faith, directly relevant to Indian Christians facing social or legal pressure today.
Persecution
Approved rendering: छळ
Transliteration: chaḷ
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: विरोध (rejected: too weak, ‘opposition’)
Original: διωγμός
Category: Perseverance
2 Thessalonians 1:4. Active hostility aimed at harming believers for their faith. Carries contemporary weight given anti-conversion law debates and real experiences of harassment faced by Christian converts in parts of India; name plainly, never euphemize.
Endurance
Approved rendering: सहनशीलता
Transliteration: sahanaśīlatā
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: वैराग्य (rejected: Stoic/ascetic self-cultivated detachment), समता/उपेक्षा (rejected: Buddhist self-cultivated equanimity)
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Perseverance
2 Thessalonians 1:4. Active, hope-fueled steadfastness under persecution, itself evidence of God’s righteous future judgment. Must be distinguished from Stoic-style detachment (vairāgya) or Buddhist equanimity (upekkhā) cultivated through disciplined self-effort; biblical endurance here is sustained by hope in Christ’s certain return, not self-generated inner detachment.
Love
Approved rendering: प्रीती
Transliteration: prītī
Doctrine: Christian Love
Rejected alternatives: प्रेम (used interchangeably but प्रीती preferred for consistency), भक्तिभाव (rejected: names devotional bhakti-fervor)
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Church
2 Thessalonians 1:3; 3:5. Self-giving, other-directed Christian love; the Thessalonians’ love for one another is increasing amid persecution. प्रीती/प्रेम are also the standard Marathi words for the devotional bhakti-prema a Warkari devotee bears toward Vitthal, or a Vaishnav devotee toward Krishna. Every occurrence must make clear this is Spirit-produced, other-directed, covenantal love among believers and toward God through Christ — not devotional emotional ardor toward a chosen personal deity. New term for this curriculum, not present in the Romans baseline.
Love Of The Truth
Approved rendering: सत्यावरील प्रीती
Transliteration: satyāvarīl prītī
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: सत्याची आवड (rejected: too weak, ‘liking’ rather than settled love)
Original: ἡ ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Salvation
2 Thessalonians 2:10. A settled affection for and embrace of the gospel truth about Christ, whose refusal is described as culpable. Uses प्रीती (see love above); must be read as settled love for the specific truth of the gospel, not generic open-mindedness or a general ‘love of learning.‘
Deception Of Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: अनीतीची फसवणूक
Transliteration: anītīcī phasavaṇūk
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: गैरसमज (rejected: neutral ‘misunderstanding’)
Original: ἀπάτη ἀδικίας
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 2:10. The morally corrupt, not merely intellectual, deceit worked by the lawless one among those perishing. Must retain its morally corrupt character; not a neutral error or innocent misunderstanding.
Signs And Wonders
Approved rendering: खोटी चिन्हे व अद्भुते
Transliteration: khoṭī cinhe va adbhute
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: चमत्कार (rejected alone: too neutral/positive, would not carry the counterfeit marking)
Original: σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα (ψεύδους)
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:9. Counterfeit miraculous phenomena empowered by Satan, used to deceive. Must be clearly marked as counterfeit/deceptive by context — the qualifier खोटी (false) must never be dropped; risk of conflation with the broad contemporary Indian devotional landscape of godman/guru miracle-claims and astrological ‘signs,’ which this passage’s logic undercuts rather than legitimizes.
Working Of Satan
Approved rendering: सैतानाचे सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: saitānāce sāmarthya
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: सैतानाची शक्ती (rejected: शक्ती reserved per baseline for the Shakti/mother-goddess collision risk)
Original: ἐνέργεια τοῦ Σατανᾶ
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:9. Satan’s active, empowering operation behind the lawless one’s counterfeit displays. Use सामर्थ्य, consistent with the baseline’s rejection of शक्ती for divine/spiritual power generally; here applied by contrast to Satan’s derivative, permitted-but-limited power, never implying Satan possesses power equal to God’s सामर्थ्य.
Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: अनीती
Transliteration: anītī
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म (rejected: caste-dharma collision, per baseline law/righteousness notes)
Original: ἀδικία
Category: Judgment
2 Thessalonians 2:10,12. The moral opposite of righteousness. Deliberately built as the negation of the baseline नीतिमत्त्व, preserving the righteousness/unrighteousness contrast structurally in Marathi as in Greek.
Obey The Gospel
Approved rendering: शुभवर्तमानाचे आज्ञापालन
Transliteration: śubhavartamānāce āgnāpālan
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: धार्मिक कर्तव्य (rejected: reads as caste-dharma-style obligation, per baseline obedience_of_faith notes)
Original: ὑπακούω τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ
Category: Salvation
2 Thessalonians 1:8. Faith-response of submission to the gospel message; failure to do so brings judgment. Related to but distinct from the baseline’s विश्वासाचे आज्ञापालन (obedience of faith, Romans 1:5/16:26); keep the same compound-phrase pattern (X-चे आज्ञापालन) so learners recognize this as part of the same obedience word-family, noting the distinct object here is the gospel message itself.
Evil One
Approved rendering: दुष्ट (सैतान)
Transliteration: duṣṭa (saitān)
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: दृष्ट/नजर (rejected: folk ‘evil eye’ superstition, unrelated impersonal-misfortune concept)
Original: ὁ πονηρός
Category: Perseverance
2 Thessalonians 3:3. Satan as a personal, defeated-yet-currently-active adversary, from whom God promises to guard believers. Must be conveyed as a personal, defeated-yet-active spiritual adversary — not an impersonal principle of evil, misfortune generally, or the folk ‘evil eye’ (दृष्ट/नजर) common in popular Maharashtrian belief. The parenthetical (सैतान) is required at first occurrence per document to fence this distinction.
Temple Of God
Approved rendering: देवाचे मंदिर
Transliteration: devāce mandir
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: मंडळी (rejected: would wrongly soften ‘temple’ into ‘meeting hall/church’)
Original: ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:4. God’s own inner sanctuary, in which the lawless one enthrones himself as his ultimate blasphemy. Denotes God’s own sanctuary, not to be confused with an ordinary Hindu मंदिर as a devotional pilgrimage site. Interpreters differ on whether this is a future rebuilt physical temple or a figurative reference to the church — translation must not resolve this debate; flag for reviewer attention with a translator’s note at every occurrence.
Self Exaltation
Approved rendering: स्वतःला उंच करणारा / प्रतिपक्षी
Transliteration: svataḥlā uñca karaṇārā / pratipakṣī
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: स्वतःला देव मानणारा (used as a related but distinct phrase for the climactic self-declaration in 2:4b, not for ὑπεραίρομαι itself)
Original: ὑπεραίρομαι / ὁ ἀντικείμενος
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:4. The lawless one’s arrogant self-elevation above every claimant to worship, and his fundamental posture of opposition to God (ἀντικείμενος). Directly touches Christ’s true, legitimate divine identity by contrast: this is a false, usurping self-exaltation, the exact photographic negative of the deity of Christ.
Breath Of His Mouth
Approved rendering: मुखाचा श्वास
Transliteration: mukhācā śvās
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: आत्मा (rejected: same Greek root as पवित्र आत्मा but wrong referent here — must never be used, to avoid implying the Holy Spirit destroys the lawless one via a ritual act)
Original: τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:8. Christ’s effortless, word-only destruction of the lawless one, echoing Isaiah 11:4. Shares the Greek root πνεῦμα with पवित्र आत्मा but is an unrelated referent (‘breath,’ not Spirit); render with श्वास, never आत्मा alone.
Medium Risk Terms
Church
Approved rendering: मंडळी
Transliteration: maṇḍaḷī
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: देऊळ, मंदिर
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Addresses the Thessalonian congregation corporately (1:1,4) and undergirds the discipline instructions of chapter 3, where the disorderly are still addressed as ‘brother’ within this same मंडळी. Never देऊळ/मंदिर.
Peace
Approved rendering: शांती
Transliteration: śāntī
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: मनःशांती
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In the greeting (1:2) and in the title ‘the Lord of peace’ (3:16). Relational peace with God through justification, not मनःशांती attained through bhakti devotion or Buddhist meditative practice.
Gathering Together
Approved rendering: एकत्र होणे
Transliteration: ekatra hoṇe
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: विलीन होणे (rejected: suggests absorption into an impersonal whole)
Original: ἐπισυναγωγή
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:1. The assembling of believers to Christ at his coming. Keep plainly relational/spatial; avoid abstraction suggesting absorption into an impersonal cosmic whole (a risk echoing Brahman-absorption imagery).
Admonish
Approved rendering: समजावून बजावणे
Transliteration: samajāvūn bajāvaṇe
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: उत्तेजन देणे (rejected as a substitute: baseline term for exhort/encourage, does not carry the corrective-warning sense required here)
Original: νουθετέω
Category: Church
2 Thessalonians 3:15. Verbal correction combined with instruction, applied to a disorderly believer still treated as a brother. Distinct from the baseline’s उत्तेजन देणे; carries a corrective-warning sense that must not be softened into mere encouragement nor hardened into harsh rebuke.
Idle Disorderly Conduct
Approved rendering: अव्यवस्थितपणे चालणे
Transliteration: avyavasthitpaṇe cālaṇe
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: आळशीपणा (rejected alone: captures only ‘laziness’, misses the disruptive military-metaphor ‘out of rank’ sense)
Original: περιπατέω ἀτάκτως
Category: Church
2 Thessalonians 3:6,11. Refusal to work and disruptive, freeloading conduct within the church, corrected by Paul’s instructions. Practical church-order matter; moderate doctrinal risk, but important for the discipline instructions of the chapter.
Appointed Time
Approved rendering: योग्य वेळ / नेमलेली वेळ
Transliteration: yogya veḷ / nemlelī veḷ
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: नशिबाची वेळ (rejected: ‘fated time’, impersonal fate framing)
Original: καιρός
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:6. God’s own sovereign, fitting moment for the lawless one’s unveiling. Must not be phrased so as to sound like an impersonal fate/karma-determined schedule; this appointed time is set by a personal, sovereign God.
Revealed
Approved rendering: प्रगट होणे
Transliteration: pragaṭ hoṇe
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: दिसणे (rejected: too weak, mere ‘appearing/being seen’)
Original: ἀποκαλύπτω
Category: Eschatology
2 Thessalonians 2:3,6,8. The public unveiling of what is presently hidden — the lawless one’s true identity. Standard disclosure verb; ensure it is not rendered so generically that the sense of a specific, climactic unveiling at God’s appointed time is lost.
Word Of The Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभूचे वचन
Transliteration: prabhūce vacan
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου
Category: Faith
2 Thessalonians 3:1. The gospel message in its authoritative proclamation, for whose rapid spread Paul requests prayer. Distinguish from the ordinary ‘word/rumor’ (λόγος) in 2:2, which names an unreliable oral report; here it is the authoritative apostolic proclamation.
Faithful
Approved rendering: विश्वासू
Transliteration: viśvāsū
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: πιστός
Category: God
2 Thessalonians 3:3. God’s own unwavering reliability, grounding assurance rather than believers’ own constancy. Adjectival form of the विश्वास root; render as a description of God’s own character, not of a devotee’s exceptional devotion.
Worthy
Approved rendering: योग्य ठरवणे
Transliteration: yogya ṭharavaṇe
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Original: ἄξιος
Category: Salvation
2 Thessalonians 1:5,11. The fittingness God himself bestows on believers for his calling, not a merit believers generate. Must not imply self-earned worthiness; parallel caution to the baseline’s Grace notes on unmerited favor.
Stand Firm
Approved rendering: स्थिर उभे राहा
Transliteration: sthir ubhe rāhā
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: στήκω
Category: Tradition
2 Thessalonians 2:15. The command to hold an unmoved position amid false teaching about the Day of the Lord and to hold fast the apostolic traditions. Pairs directly with tradition (परंपरा) above; ensure the stability commanded is understood as fidelity to specific apostolic teaching, not general steadfastness of temperament.
Eternal Comfort And Good Hope
Approved rendering: सार्वकालिक सांत्वन आणि चांगली आशा
Transliteration: sārvakālik sāntvan āṇi cāṅglī āśā
Doctrine: Grace
Original: παράκλησις αἰωνία καὶ ἐλπὶς ἀγαθή
Category: Faith
2 Thessalonians 2:16. The comfort and hope God has already given by grace, grounding believers’ stability. Must be conveyed as grace-grounded, not achieved through the believer’s own devotional effort or self-cultivated equanimity.
Establish And Guard
Approved rendering: स्थिर करील व राखील
Transliteration: sthir karīl va rākhīl
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: στηρίζω καὶ φυλάσσω
Category: Perseverance
2 Thessalonians 3:3. God’s own promised action to strengthen and protect believers from the evil one. Divine, personal protective action; keep distinct from folk-protective practices against misfortune or the ‘evil eye.‘
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: उपकारस्तुती
Transliteration: upakārastutī
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Standard term at 1:3 and 2:13; minor risk of over-ritualization only.
