Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Revelation (Prakāśita Vākya / प्रकटीकरण)

English → Marathi | Full-Book Coverage (Ch. 1–22)

Methodology: The core passage (Revelation 21:1–8) receives full verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term: original Greek, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Marathi) rendering risk. Every other chapter of Revelation, first to last, is then surveyed for its own load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields, in table form. Where a chapter introduces no new theological vocabulary beyond terms already treated, this is stated explicitly and the chapter is marked as reviewed. All terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly as recorded there; this document does not re-derive them but cites the established rendering and flags any Revelation-specific nuance.

PART A — CORE PASSAGE: Revelation 21:1–8 (Verse-by-Verse)

Revelation 21:1

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
καινόςkainosnew (in kind/quality, not merely new in time)fresh, renewed, qualitatively unprecedented (vs. νέος = new in time only)“new,” “renewed”Cosmic renewal, not mere replacement — continuity-with-transformation of the created order, God’s decisive re-creative actनवीन / नवेMedium — must not read as cyclical world-renewal (Hindu yuga cycles, cosmic dissolution/re-creation of pralaya) but as a single, final, once-for-all re-creation
οὐρανόςouranosheaven, skythe visible sky; the abode of God; the created heavens”heaven,” “sky”The created heavens, now to be replaced/renewed alongside earthआकाश (sky) / स्वर्ग (heaven, dwelling of God) — here रendered नवे आकाश for the created cosmos being renewedMedium — स्वर्ग in popular Hindu usage names Indra’s paradise/a temporary heavenly realm reached by good karma before further rebirth; here आकाश (the created heaven/sky being remade) avoids that association, reserving स्वर्ग for God’s own eternal dwelling
γῆearth, land, groundthe physical earth; a specific land/territory”earth,” “land”The physical creation, renewed to be God’s eternal dwelling with humanityपृथ्वीLow — stable, non-theologically-loaded term
θάλασσαthalassaseathe sea (literal); frequently symbolic in Revelation of chaos, the abyss, the source of the beast (13:1)“sea""No more sea” signals the removal of the last locus of primeval chaos and evil’s origin, not a literal absence of water bodiesसमुद्रMedium — must be taught as removal of the symbol of chaos/threat (cf. Rev 13:1), not a literal geographic claim that could seem an odd or trivial detail to a first-time reader

Verse-level note: This verse establishes the doctrine of the New Heaven and New Earth as the decisive theological anchor of the whole book. The passing away (ἀπῆλθαν) of “the first heaven and the first earth” must be rendered so as to preserve linear, one-time eschatological finality — consistent with the baseline’s treatment of “Fulfillment of Prophecy” (linear historical fulfillment, not the cyclical cosmic time of Hindu yuga cycles or the Buddhist wheel of dependent origination).

Revelation 21:2

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
πόλιςpoliscitya walled settlement; a civic/political community”city”The New Jerusalem as the consummated dwelling-place of God’s people, a real corporate destiny, not an abstract state of blissनगरी / शहरLow-Medium — नगरी conveys a dignified, city-scale destiny rather than the more neutral शहर
ἁγία (< ἅγιος)hagiaholyset apart, morally pure, consecrated to God”holy”The city itself is called holy, marking it as wholly God’s own; reuses established doctrine of holinessपवित्रEstablished — reuse baseline term exactly (baseline: “holy” = पवित्र, High risk; ritual-purity connotations of शुद्ध must be avoided)
ἸερουσαλήμIerousalēmJerusalemthe historical city; here the eschatological, heavenly city”Jerusalem”Proper noun; the “New Jerusalem” fulfils and transcends the earthly city, uniting OT covenant hope with final consummationयरुशलेम (नवे यरुशलेम)Medium — requires OT background (established city of David, temple) to carry its full theological weight for readers with low OT narrative literacy
καταβαίνουσαν (< καταβαίνω)katabainousandescending, coming downdownward movement; here, of divine origin and gift”coming down,” “descending”The city is God’s gift descending to humanity — salvation received, not humanly constructed or ascended to by merit or self-effortखाली उतरणारीHigh — must clearly convey that this city comes from God to humanity (a gift), reinforcing grace (कृपा) rather than any picture of human ascent to a self-attained heavenly abode (paralleling the baseline’s concern that grace never be recast as merit-earned)
νύμφηnymphēbridea woman betrothed or newly married; frequently used of Israel/the Church in covenant-marriage imagery”bride”The corporate people of God in consummated covenant union with Christ — the doctrine of the Church as Bride of ChristवधूCritical — Maharashtra’s devotional landscape (Warkari and broader Vaishnav bhakti) contains bridal-mysticism imagery in which the individual devotee’s soul (as gopī) is pictured as beloved/bride of Krishna or Vitthal. वधू here must be taught as a corporate, covenantal image (the whole redeemed people, in one particular historical marriage-covenant relationship with Christ), not assimilated to an individual devotee’s private romantic-devotional merger with a chosen personal deity
κεκοσμημένην (< κοσμέω)kekosmēmenēnadorned, decoratedto order, arrange, beautify”adorned,” “prepared”The bride’s readiness/adornment pictures the Church made ready by God’s own work, not self-adornment through meritसुशोभित केलेलीMedium — pair with वधू note; adornment is given, not self-achieved

Revelation 21:3

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
θρόνοςthronosthronea seat of royal/divine authority”throne”The seat of God’s absolute sovereignty, source of the declaration that follows — ties to Sovereignty of God over HistoryसिंहासनMedium — establish here as the recurring symbol of divine sovereign rule throughout Revelation (see Ch. 4 below); distinguish from any merely political or earthly royal throne
σκηνήskēnētent, tabernacle, dwellingthe OT tabernacle; a temporary dwelling; by extension, to dwell/reside”tabernacle,” “dwelling”God’s own personal, permanent dwelling with his people — echoes the OT tabernacle (Exodus) and John 1:14 (“the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us”), now consummated foreverमंडप (निवासमंडप)High — must connect to the OT tabernacle background (which this audience largely lacks) as the fulfillment of God dwelling with his people; avoid any reduction to a generic “temple” (मंदिर, already reserved against Hindu temple associations per baseline “church” entry)
σκηνώσει (< σκηνόω)skēnōseihe will dwell/tabernacleto pitch one’s tent, to dwell, to take up permanent residence”will dwell,” “will tabernacle”God’s permanent, personal presence with his redeemed people — the goal of all redemptive historyवस्ती करील / राहीलHigh — must convey permanent, relational, personal presence, not a philosophical claim of an impersonal divine presence pervading all things (a concept that could otherwise assimilate to Hindu/Vedantic notions of the divine indwelling all creation, e.g. सर्वव्यापी परमात्मा)
λαόςlaospeoplea people-group, nation, especially a covenant people”people,” “peoples”God’s own covenant people, drawn from every nation (cf. Rev 5:9; 7:9) — ties to Unity of Jews and Gentiles / Universal Scope of the Gospel in the baselineलोक / प्रजाMedium — reuse baseline sensitivity: this “peoples” language must retain the unqualified, no-caste-barrier universality already flagged Critical in the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine

Revelation 21:4

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
δάκρυονdakryonteara tear (of weeping)“tear”God’s own tender, personal comfort of his people, wiping every tear himselfअश्रूLow — vivid, accessible image
θάνατοςthanatosdeathcessation of bodily life; personified as an enemy elsewhere in Revelation (6:8; 20:14)“death”The final, definitive abolition of death itself as an enemy, not merely a personal passage to another existenceमृत्यूHigh — must be taught as death’s final defeat and abolition (cf. 1 Cor 15:26, reused resurrection theology), not one more turn within a cycle of death-and-rebirth (saṃsāra); this is the decisive contrast with both Hindu and Buddhist frameworks of repeated death
πένθοςpenthosmourning, griefsorrow, especially over loss”mourning,” “grief”Grief itself banished from the new creationशोकLow
κραυγήkraugēcrying out, outcrya loud cry, whether of pain or distress”crying,” “outcry”The removal of anguished cries — no more suffering to cry out overआक्रोशLow
πόνοςponospain, labor, toilphysical or emotional pain; hard labor”pain”All pain, physical and emotional, ended in the consummated new creationवेदनाLow

Verse-level note: This verse is a key pastoral-comfort passage; its force depends on death being understood as a real, personal enemy finally and permanently conquered — not one stage within an ongoing cycle. The translation must not inadvertently suggest a merely temporary respite before another cycle of suffering (as could occur if a phrase evoking saṃsāra crept into the rendering).

Revelation 21:5

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳho kathēmenos epi tō thronōthe one sitting on the thronea title for God himself, recurring throughout Revelation (4:2, 9-10; 5:1, 7, 13; 20:11)“he who was seated on the throne”Identifies the speaker as God the Father/Almighty himself, personally guaranteeing the promiseसिंहासनावर बसलेलाMedium — a recurring divine title; consistent rendering required across all occurrences (see Ch. 4, 20)
καινὰ ποιῶ πάνταkaina poiō pantaI make all things newpresent tense — an act in progress/declared as certain, not merely future”I am making all things new,” “Behold, I make all things new”The programmatic thesis-statement of the whole book’s eschatology; God himself, not an impersonal cosmic process, is the agent of renewalमी सर्व काही नवे करतोCritical — this is arguably the single most quotable verse of the doctrine of the New Heaven and New Earth; must be rendered identically wherever cited across all Revelation curriculum materials (parallel to the baseline’s rule fixing Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28 verbatim across documents)
πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοίpistoi kai alēthinoifaithful and truereliable, trustworthy + genuine, not false”faithful and true,” “trustworthy and true”God’s own words/promises are certified as reliable — ties to established विश्वास (faith/trust) root and to the doctrine of inspiration of Scriptureविश्वासू आणि खरेHigh — reuse विश्वास root (baseline “faith” = विश्वास) for πιστός; खरे (true/genuine) distinguishes from mere sincerity of a devotee’s belief — these words are objectively true, not simply devotionally meaningful

Revelation 21:6

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ΓέγονανGegonanIt is done / They have come to passperfect tense, completed action with abiding results”It is done,” “It has come to pass”The whole redemptive plan reaches its consummation — echoes Christ’s “It is finished” (John 19:30)ते झाले आहे / पूर्ण झालेMedium — should echo, where the curriculum cross-references it, the established rendering of Christ’s cross-word “पूर्ण झाले”
τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦto Alpha kai to Ōthe Alpha and the Omegathe first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, a merism for total comprehensiveness”the Alpha and the Omega”A divine self-designation of eternal, sovereign existence — identical title used of God the Father (1:8) and of Christ (22:13), a strong claim to Christ’s full deityअल्फा आणि ओमेगाCritical — transliterated (Greek letters have no Marathi equivalent); requires explanatory teaching since the Devanagari reader has no native referent for these letters; must be paired with the explanatory gloss “आरंभ आणि शेवट” (beginning and end) every time, and its identical application to both Father and Son must be preserved to safeguard the doctrine of Deity of Christ
ἡ ἀρχὴ καὶ τὸ τέλοςhē archē kai to telosthe beginning and the endorigin/first cause + termination/goal”the beginning and the end”Explanatory gloss of Alpha/Omega; God as the sole originator and consummator of history — ties to Sovereignty of God over Historyआरंभ आणि शेवटMedium — must not be softened into a merely poetic phrase; it is a metaphysical claim of exclusive divine sovereignty over the whole of history, not shared with any other power
διψῶντι (< διψάω)dipsōntito the one who thirstsphysical thirst; frequently metaphorical for spiritual longing (cf. John 4:14; 7:37)“to the thirsty”Whoever longs for God/eternal life is invited, freely, without any prerequisite meritतहानलेल्यालाMedium — should retain both the literal and spiritual resonance; do not narrow to only physical thirst
πηγὴ τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς ζωῆςpēgē tou hydatos tēs zōēsspring/fountain of the water of lifea source of living/flowing water, symbol of eternal life given by God”spring of the water of life”Eternal life as God’s own gift, freely given, flowing from himself as its sourceजीवनाच्या पाण्याचा झराHigh — must be distinguished from “sacred water” concepts in the destination culture (e.g., the ritually purifying waters of a tīrtha/pilgrimage bathing site, or the Godavari/other rivers venerated in Hindu pilgrimage). This is not water that itself confers ritual purity through contact, but God’s own gift of eternal life, given, not obtained by rite
δωρεάνdōreanfreely, as a gift, without costgiven gratuitously; without payment or merit”freely,” “without cost,” “as a gift”Direct restatement of the grace principle at the heart of Romans — salvation/eternal life given, not earnedविनामूल्य / फुकटCritical — this word is the linguistic marker of the grace (कृपा) doctrine already flagged Critical in the baseline; here it must be rendered so as to preclude any reading of merit, ritual payment, or self-cultivated attainment (paralleling the baseline’s concern for both the Warkari bhakti-grace collision and the self-effort emphasis of the Buddhist Eightfold Path)

Revelation 21:7

Greek: ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός.

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ὁ νικῶν (< νικάω)ho nikōnthe one who conquers/overcomesto win a victory, prevail, be victorious”the one who overcomes,” “he who conquers,” “he who is victorious”The believer who perseveres in faith to the end, made victorious not by self-effort but by the Lamb’s own victory (cf. 12:11, “they overcame by the blood of the Lamb”) — ties to Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution and Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evilविजय मिळवणारा / जिंकणाराHigh — the single most repeated promise-formula in Revelation (occurs in each of the seven letters, ch. 2–3, and here at the climax). Must be carefully taught as victory given through Christ’s own triumph and the believer’s faith/testimony, not a self-attained spiritual accomplishment — otherwise it risks collapsing into the self-cultivated attainment of the Eightfold Path, or into a karma-style ledger of merit earned through struggle
κληρονομέωklēronomeōto inheritto receive as an heir; to come into possession of an allotted portion”will inherit,” “will possess”The overcomer receives the whole new-creation inheritance as a son — ties directly to the baseline’s Adoption doctrine (full son-status, full inheritance rights)वतन मिळेल / वारसा मिळेलHigh — reuse conceptual link to established दत्तक पुत्रत्व (adoption); inheritance received by virtue of sonship, not earned separately by achievement
υἱόςhuiossona male child; by extension, one who bears the father’s nature/status/inheritance”son”The overcomer is declared God’s son — the consummation of the adoption already granted in this life (Rom 8:15-17, established baseline doctrine)पुत्रHigh — reuse baseline sensitivity from adoption: this is a relational, forensic sonship declared by God over the whole person, not a claim requiring a particular prior metaphysics of an unchanging self (a live conceptual question for readers formed by Navayana Buddhist anatta teaching)

Revelation 21:8

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
δειλοῖς (< δειλός)deiloiscowardlyfearful, timid, lacking courage — specifically failing to hold faithful witness under pressure”cowardly,” “the fearful”Those who abandon faithful testimony under persecution rather than persevere — direct negative counterpart to the overcomer of v.7भित्रेMedium — must be understood in context as failure of faithful witness under persecution specifically, not general timidity as a character flaw
ἀπίστοις (< ἄπιστος)apistoisunbelieving, faithlesslacking trust/faith; untrustworthy”unbelieving,” “faithless”Those without saving trust in Christअविश्वासूHigh — reuse established विश्वास root (baseline “faith” = विश्वास); negation अविश्वासू must clearly denote absence of trust in Christ specifically, not merely an irreligious disposition
ἐβδελυγμένοις (< βδελύσσομαι)ebdelygmenoisdetestable, abominablemorally repugnant, defiled, polluted — often associated with idolatrous practice in the LXX”abominable,” “detestable,” “vile”Those whose conduct is morally repugnant before Godघृणास्पदMedium
φονεῦσιν (< φονεύς)phoneusinmurderersone who takes human life unlawfully”murderers”Direct moral transgressionखुनीLow
πόρνοις (< πόρνος)pornoissexually immoralone engaged in illicit sexual activity (fornication broadly)“the sexually immoral,” “fornicators”Sexual sin as a marker of exclusion from the new creationव्यभिचारीMedium
φαρμάκοις (< φάρμακος)pharmakoissorcerersone who practices magic/poisoning through drugs, potions, spells”sorcerers,” “those who practice magic arts”Occult practice as rebellion against God’s sole sovereigntyजादूटोणा करणारे / चेटूक करणारेHigh — occult and folk-magical practice (mantra-tantra, charms, amulets, spirit-appeasement) remains a live feature of popular religion across Maharashtra’s rural and urban folk-Hindu practice; this term must be taught as a serious category of idolatrous rebellion, not merely quaint “magic,” while avoiding language that stigmatizes traditional folk healers as a class rather than naming the specific spiritual offense
εἰδωλολάτραις (< εἰδωλολάτρης)eidōlolatraisidolatersone who worships an idol/image instead of the true God”idolaters”Those who direct worship to a created image rather than God — direct antithesis of the book’s central call to worship the Lamb aloneमूर्तिपूजकCritical — this is among the most theologically and socially sensitive terms in the entire curriculum. मूर्तिपूजक names, in ordinary Marathi usage, precisely the devotional image-worship (mūrti pūjā) central to majority Hindu practice in Maharashtra, including reverence shown to Vitthal’s mūrti at Pandharpur. The doctrine must be taught with great pastoral care: this is a theological category describing misdirected worship of any created thing in place of the Creator, not a blanket ethnic or communal condemnation of Hindu neighbors; teaching notes must make the distinction between naming a sin category and stigmatizing a people group explicit
ψευδέσιν (< ψευδής)pseudesinliarsone who speaks falsehood”liars,” “all liars”Habitual falsehood as final exclusion from the new creation, contrasted with God’s own “faithful and true” words (v.5)खोटे बोलणारेLow
λίμνη καιομένη πυρὶ καὶ θείῳlimnē kaiomenē pyri kai theiōlake burning with fire and sulfura place/state of ongoing, active, conscious judgment”the lake that burns with fire and sulfur,” “the lake of fire”Final, conscious, eternal judgment of the unrepentant — the negative counterpart to the New Heaven and New Earthअग्नी व गंधकाने जळणारे सरोवरCritical — must NOT be rendered with नरक (naraka), the common Hindu/Buddhist word for a purgatorial hell-realm that is understood as temporary, one stage within an ongoing cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra) from which one may eventually be released through merit or further rebirths. The lake of fire is a final, unending, conscious state of judgment following the one bodily resurrection, categorically different from any cyclical hell-realm cosmology
ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτεροςho thanatos ho deuterosthe second deatha second, final death following bodily resurrection and judgment (cf. Rev 20:14)“the second death”Final, eternal separation from God following the one general resurrection — not a further rebirth or another turn of a cycleदुसरे मरणCritical — must be explicitly taught as a single, final, terminal event following the one bodily resurrection and last judgment (Rev 20:11-15), decisively not an additional cycle of death-and-rebirth; this concept has no structural equivalent in either Warkari-Hindu or Navayana Buddhist eschatology and needs positive doctrinal construction, not merely a corrected word

PART B — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER SURVEY (Ch. 1–22)

Chapter 1 — Prologue and Vision of the Son of Man

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ἀποκάλυψιςapokalypsisunveiling, revelationuncovering something hidden; the book’s own title-word”revelation,” “apocalypse”The prophetic unveiling of end-time realities and of Christ’s glory, given by God through his angel to his servantsप्रकटीकरणHigh — must be distinguished from the Warkari/broader bhakti concept of darśan (दर्शन) — a devotee’s privileged visual encounter with a chosen deity’s image at a pilgrimage site (e.g., Vitthal’s darśan at Pandharpur). प्रकटीकरण here names a specific, once-given prophetic disclosure of future realities and Christ’s glory, not a repeatable devotional-visual experience available to any pilgrim
παντοκράτωρpantokratōralmighty, ruler of allone who holds sovereign power over all things”Almighty,” “the All-Powerful One”God’s total, unrivaled sovereignty over history and creation — ties to Sovereignty of God over Historyसर्वसमर्थHigh — avoid सर्वशक्तिमान, whose शक्ती root risks associating God’s sovereign might with Maharashtra’s prominent Shakti/mother-goddess tradition (cf. baseline’s rejection of शक्ती for power_of_god); सर्वसमर्थ (all-capable/all-sufficient) avoids this root while conveying total sovereignty
ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενοςho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenosthe one who is, and who was, and who is to comeeternal, unchanging existence spanning past, present, future”who is, and who was, and who is to come”A divine self-designation of eternal existence, paired with Alpha/Omega — full deityजो आहे, जो होता, आणि जो येणार आहेCritical — recurring divine title (1:4, 1:8, 4:8); must be rendered identically at each occurrence to preserve the doctrine of Deity of Christ / Sovereignty of God over History
υἱὸς ἀνθρώπουhuios anthrōpouson of mana human being; in Daniel 7 and the Gospels, Christ’s own exalted, heavenly-authority self-designation”Son of Man”Christ’s messianic, heavenly-authority title drawn from Daniel 7:13-14 — must not be flattened to mean merely “a human being”मनुष्याचा पुत्रHigh — must be distinguished carefully from देवाचा पुत्र (Son of God, established Critical baseline term); “Son of Man” here carries specific Danielic overtones of heavenly authority and glory, not a lesser or merely human title
λυχνίαlychnialampstanda stand for a lamp; symbol of the seven churches (1:20)“lampstand”The churches as light-bearing witnesses in the worldदीपवृक्ष / दिवठणLow-Medium — largely symbolic imagery; ensure “lampstand” and not “lamp” itself, since Christ walks among the lampstands (the churches), not identified with the light source himself
μαρτυρίαmartyriatestimony, witnessthe act or content of bearing witness, often under cost”testimony,” “witness”John’s own faithful testimony to the word of God and to Christ, model for the whole book’s persecution theologyसाक्षHigh — establishes the term for the entire book’s doctrine of Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution; the same root gives rise to the English loanword “martyr,” and the Marathi curriculum should note this connection explicitly when teaching about those who bear witness at the cost of their lives (see ch. 2, 6, 11, 12, 20)
ἱερεῖςhiereisprieststhose who mediate access to God through sacrifice/service”priests”Believers made “a kingdom, priests to his God” (1:6) — corporate priesthood of all believersयाजकMedium — याजक is the established Marathi Christian term; must be kept distinct from पुरोहित/ब्राह्मण, which carry caste-linked associations with hereditary Brahmin priesthood that this doctrine of universal, non-hereditary believer-priesthood directly stands against
Reuse from baselineजो god = परमेश्वर, jesus = येशू, lord = प्रभू, israel = इस्राएल, holy = पवित्र, glory = गौरव, grace = कृपा, peace = शांती all occur in the epistolary opening (1:4-5) and must be rendered exactly per baseline

μετάνοια / μετανοέωmetanoia / metanoeōchange of mind, repentancea decisive turning from sin to God”repent,” “repentance”Genuine inward and outward turning toward God demanded of erring churchesपश्चात्तापHigh — must be distinguished from प्रायश्चित्त, the Hindu concept of ritual expiation (pilgrimage, ritual bathing, penance rites) that removes the effect of sin/bad karma through the performance of a rite; पश्चात्ताप is a relational turning toward the personal God who alone forgives, not a ritual mechanism
νικάωnikaōto conquer, overcometo prevail in a contest or trial”the one who overcomes/conquers”First occurrence of the book’s central perseverance-promise formula (repeated in each letter and at 21:7)जिंकणारा / विजय मिळवणाराHigh — establish here; see full treatment at 21:7 above
ξύλον τῆς ζωῆςxylon tēs zōēstree of lifethe Edenic tree, now an eschatological reward”tree of life”Restored access to eternal life lost in Eden, granted to the overcomerजीवनाचे झाडMedium — requires Genesis background; ties to the New Creation doctrine, fulfilled again at 22:2
στέφανος τῆς ζωῆςstephanos tēs zōēscrown of lifea victor’s wreath (not a royal crown)“crown of life”A reward for faithfulness under persecution/trial, specifically for the martyr-church of Smyrnaजीवनाचा मुकुटMedium

θλῖψιςthlipsistribulation, afflictionpressure, distress, persecution”tribulation,” “affliction”The suffering the churches (esp. Smyrna) endure for their testimony — ties to Perseverance under Persecutionसंकट / विपत्तीHigh — establishes the term used throughout the book (cf. 7:14, “the great tribulation”)

βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆςbiblion tēs zōēsbook of lifethe divine register of the redeemed”book of life”Assurance that the overcomer’s name is permanently retained before God — ties to Assurance of God’s Final Victoryजीवनाचे पुस्तकHigh — establish here; recurs at 13:8, 17:8, 20:12, 20:15, 21:27, 22:19 and must be rendered identically throughout
κλεὶς Δαυίδkleis Dauidkey of Davidmessianic authority to open/shut access to God’s kingdom (Isa 22:22)“key of David”Christ’s sovereign, exclusive authority to grant or withhold entry into the eschatological kingdomदावीदाची किल्लीHigh — reuse established david = दावीद; requires OT background (Isaiah)
θύρα ἠνεῳγμένηthyra ēneōgmenēopen dooran opportunity granted by God, unopposable”open door”God-given opportunity for mission/access, granted sovereignlyउघडे द्वारMedium
ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνόςastēr ho prōinosmorning starVenus at dawn; messianic self-title (also 22:16)“morning star”Christ’s own royal-messianic title, drawn from Numbers 24:17 (“a star shall come out of Jacob”)पहाटेचा ताराHigh — must be distinguished from any astrological reading; Venus/शुक्र carries astrological significance in popular Hindu practice (ज्योतिष), already flagged in the baseline’s distinction between संदेष्टा (prophet) and ज्योतिषी (astrologer/fortune-teller); this title is a messianic claim of royal lineage and glory, not an astrological reference
χλιαρόςchliaroslukewarmneither hot nor cold; half-hearted”lukewarm”Spiritual complacency and half-hearted faith, provoking God’s rejection (Laodicea)कोमट / निरुत्साहीLow-Medium

θρόνοςthronosthroneseat of sovereign authority”throne”Central symbol of God’s absolute sovereignty over history, recurring 45+ times in RevelationसिंहासनHigh — establish as the book’s central sovereignty-symbol; consistent rendering required throughout (Ch. 3–5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 20, 21, 22)
πρεσβύτεροι (24)presbyteroieldersolder, honored representative figures”elders”Twenty-four heavenly representative figures (likely symbolic of the patriarchs and apostles together) worshiping around the throne(चोवीस) वडीलMedium — वडील is also the ordinary word for a church elder/office-holder; the curriculum must clarify that these twenty-four are a distinct, symbolic heavenly company, not literal local-church elders
ζῷα (τέσσαρα)zōa (tessara)(four) living creaturescomposite angelic/cherubic beings drawn from Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6”living creatures,” “beasts” (KJV)Worship-leading heavenly beings, not literal animals(चार) जिवंत प्राणीMedium — प्राणी alone risks reduction to ordinary “animal”; the curriculum should clarify this is a majestic, composite angelic/cherubic order of being, continuous with Ezekiel’s cherubim, not a mundane creature
Τρισάγιον (“Ἅγιος ἅγιος ἅγιος”)TrisagionHoly, holy, holytriple repetition of ἅγιος for emphasis”Holy, holy, holy”Highest liturgical declaration of God’s total holiness and transcendenceपवित्र, पवित्र, पवित्रEstablished — reuse पवित्र exactly per baseline
ἶριςirisrainbowa rainbow encircling the throne (cf. Ezek 1:28; Gen 9, the covenant sign)“rainbow”Sign of God’s covenant faithfulness even in judgmentइंद्रधनुष्यMedium — noteworthy but not requiring word substitution: the ordinary Marathi word for “rainbow” is literally “Indra’s bow” (इंद्रधनुष्य), referencing the Vedic storm-deity Indra. In contemporary usage this carries no live devotional force (unlike शक्ती or अवतार) and is the only natural lexical choice; the curriculum should simply note this etymology for translator awareness rather than seek a substitute, since no viable alternative exists
θάλασσα ὑαλίνηthalassa hyalinēsea of glassa crystal-clear sea before the throne”sea of glass”Symbol of purity, order, and separation from chaos before God’s throneकाचेसारखा समुद्रLow
ἄξιοςaxiosworthydeserving, fit, of sufficient merit or standing”worthy”The doctrinal key-word of chapters 4–5: only God (and, in ch.5, the Lamb) is “worthy” of worship and to open the scroll — ties directly to Worship of the Lambयोग्यHigh — establishes the worthiness-vocabulary central to the book’s worship theology; must be reserved exclusively for God/the Lamb, never applied loosely to any other figure receiving praise in the narrative (contrast the beast’s blasphemous claim to worship, ch. 13)

Chapter 5 — The Lamb Worthy to Open the Scroll

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ἀρνίονarnionlittle lamba young/small lamb — Revelation’s dominant, distinctive title for Christ (used 28 times)“Lamb,” “the Lamb”The book’s central Christological title: Christ as the once-slain, now-victorious and enthroned Lamb — holds together sacrificial death and royal triumph in a single image; foundational to the doctrine of Worship of the Lambकोकरा / कोकरूCritical — the single most important new Christological term of the whole book. Must be taught with its full paradox intact: a Lamb that was slain (5:6) yet stands, reigns from the throne (5:13; 7:17; 22:1,3), and receives the worship due to God alone. Risk: (1) reduction to only sacrificial-animal imagery (as in Vedic yajña/animal offering traditions), losing the resurrection-triumph half of the image; (2) failure to convey that worship offered to the Lamb is worship offered to God himself (co-equal deity, cf. son_of_god baseline term)
ἐσφαγμένον (< σφάζω)esphagmenonslain, slaughteredviolently killed, as a sacrifice”as though slain,” “who had been slain”Christ’s real, historical, sacrificial death, the ground of his worthinessवधलेलाHigh — must retain the “as though/appearing as” (ὡς ἐσφαγμένον) force: the Lamb bears the marks of having been slain while now standing alive and enthroned — a simultaneous, not sequential, image
βιβλίον / σφραγίς (ἑπτά)biblion / sphragis (hepta)scroll / seal (seven)a rolled written document sealed shut”scroll,” “book”; “seal(s)“God’s sovereign plan for history, hidden until the worthy one (the Lamb) opens itगुंडाळी / मुद्रा (सात)Medium — ties to Sovereignty of God over History: only the Lamb is worthy to unveil and enact God’s redemptive-historical plan
λέων ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδαleōn ek tēs phylēs IoudaLion of the tribe of Judahmessianic title from Genesis 49:9-10”the Lion of the tribe of Judah”Christ’s royal, conquering messianic identity, held in paradox with the Lamb who was slainयहूदा वंशाचा सिंहHigh — the Lion/Lamb paradox (announced as a Lion, appearing as a Lamb, 5:5-6) is a key literary-theological device of the whole book and must be preserved, not resolved or flattened in translation
ῥίζα Δαυίδrhiza Dauidroot of Davidmessianic title, David’s own source/origin as well as descendant (cf. 22:16)“Root of David”Christ as both David’s ancestor (in his deity) and descendant (in his humanity) — reuse established david/seed_of_david baseline termsदावीदाचे मूळHigh — reuse established दावीद; ties to baseline davidic_covenant doctrine
ᾠδὴ καινήōdē kainēnew songa fresh song of praise, given in response to a new redemptive act”new song”Worship-response to the Lamb’s unique redemptive worthinessनवे गीतLow-Medium
ἠγόρασας (< ἀγοράζω)ēgorasasyou purchased/boughtto buy in a marketplace; redemption-price imagery”you ransomed,” “you purchased,” “you redeemed”Redemption by the Lamb’s blood, at a real cost — ties to established salvation (तारण) doctrineविकत घेतले / खंडणी देऊन सोडवलेCritical — must preserve the costly, blood-bought nature of salvation; consistent with baseline’s insistence that तारण is deliverance given by God through Christ, not a state self-attained
φυλή, γλῶσσα, λαός, ἔθνοςphylē, glōssa, laos, ethnostribe, tongue, people, nationthe fourfold universal formula recurring throughout Revelation (5:9; 7:9; 11:9; 13:7; 14:6; 17:15)“every tribe and tongue and people and nation”The Lamb’s redemption embraces the whole of humanity without distinction — direct continuation of the baseline’s Universal Scope of the Gospel / Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrineप्रत्येक वंश, भाषा, लोक आणि राष्ट्रHigh — must retain full, unqualified universality every time this formula recurs; especially resonant given the historic, living memory of caste-based exclusion in Maharashtra

Chapter 6 — The Seven Seals Opened

θάνατος / ᾅδηςthanatos / hadēsdeath / Hadespersonified death and the realm of the dead, riding as the fourth horseman”Death”; “Hades,” “the grave”Death and the underworld personified as defeated enemies under God’s sovereign permission, not autonomous powersमृत्यू / अधोलोकHigh — अधोलोक (Hades/underworld) must be carefully distinguished from the Hindu Puranic cosmology of Patāla/Yamalok (the god of death Yama’s abode, part of an ongoing cyclical cosmology); here Hades is a temporary holding-place of the dead, itself finally cast into the lake of fire (20:14), under total divine sovereignty, not a co-eternal or autonomous cosmic realm
ὀργὴ τοῦ ἀρνίουorgē tou arniouthe wrath of the LambGod’s righteous judgment, remarkably attributed to the Lamb himself”the wrath of the Lamb”A deliberate, striking paradox: the gentle, sacrificial Lamb is also the righteous Judge — must not be flattened by removing either half of the paradoxकोकऱ्याचा क्रोधHigh — pairs established कोकरा (Lamb) with क्रोध (wrath); the juxtaposition of gentleness and righteous judgment in a single figure is theologically load-bearing and must be preserved intact
ψυχαὶ τῶν ἐσφαγμένωνpsychai tōn esphagmenōnsouls of those who had been slainmartyrs’ souls under the altar, crying for justice”the souls of those who had been slain”The cry of the martyred faithful for divine justice — ties to Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saintsवधलेल्यांचे आत्मेHigh — establishes the martyr-vindication theme continued through ch. 7, 11, 12, 20

Chapter 7 — The 144,000 Sealed; the Great Multitude

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
σφραγίζω / σφραγίςsphragizō / sphragisto seal / a sealto mark with a seal of ownership and protection”sealed,” “seal”God’s own supernatural mark of ownership and protection on his servants’ foreheads, distinct from and opposed to the beast’s mark (ch. 13)शिक्का मारणे / मुद्रांकित करणेHigh — the forehead location is significant in the Marathi cultural context: forehead-marking (टिळा/तिलक) is a widely recognized marker of religious/sectarian identity in Hindu practice (e.g., Vaishnav or Shaiv sectarian tilaka). God’s seal here must be taught as a supernatural, not ritual, mark — an act of divine ownership and protective claim, not a devotional or caste/sect-identifying rite performed by the worshiper
θλῖψις ἡ μεγάληthlipsis hē megalēthe great tribulationthe definite, climactic period of intense persecution/suffering”the great tribulation”The specific, climactic period of suffering the redeemed multitude has come throughमोठे संकटHigh — reuse established संकट (ch. 2); “the great tribulation” (definite article) names a specific climactic period, not tribulation in general
στολαὶ λευκαίstolai leukaiwhite robesgarments made white, symbol of purity/vindication”white robes”The redeemed multitude’s purity, granted, not self-achievedपांढरे वस्त्रMedium
πλύναντες τὰς στολὰς…ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ ἀρνίουplynantes tas stolas…en tō haimati tou arniouhaving washed their robes in the blood of the Lamba paradoxical image — blood that washes clean rather than staining”washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb”Purity/righteousness given through the Lamb’s atoning blood alone, not self-achieved moral effort — direct restatement of imputed_righteousness doctrine from the baselineकोकऱ्याच्या रक्तात वस्त्रे धुतलीCritical — must preserve the paradox (blood makes white, not red/stained); a key atonement image that must not be softened or explained away; parallels the baseline’s Critical concern that righteousness is credited/given, never self-achieved
ποιμαίνωpoimainōto shepherdto lead, feed, and care for as a shepherd”will shepherd,” “will be their shepherd”The Lamb himself becomes their Shepherd (a striking reversal of roles) — Christ’s tender, personal care for the redeemedमेंढपाळ होईलMedium — preserve the deliberate Lamb-as-Shepherd role-reversal paradox

σιγήsigēsilencestillness, quiet”silence”Dramatic silence in heaven before judgment unfolds — heightens the solemnity of divine judgmentस्वर्गात शांतताLow-Medium — शांतता (stillness/quiet) here is distinct from established baseline शांती (relational peace with God); the two must not be confused in teaching
σάλπιγξ (ἑπτά)salpinx (hepta)trumpet (seven)a ram’s-horn or metal trumpet, used for signals, war, and worship”trumpet(s)“Instruments announcing successive divine judgments — ties to Sovereignty of God over Historyकर्णा / तुतारी (सात)Medium

Chapter 9 — The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ἄβυσσοςabyssosthe abyss, the bottomless pitthe deep, the prison of demonic powers”the bottomless pit,” “the abyss”A place of confinement for demonic forces, entirely under God’s sovereign control (its “key” is given by God)अगाध डोह / पाताळHigh — पाताळ is the Puranic name for one of the seven netherworlds of Hindu cosmology, generally imagined as inhabited by nāgas and other beings, not as a place of punishment per se. The curriculum should prefer अगाध डोह (bottomless deep) as the primary rendering and, where पाताळ must be used for comprehensibility, explicitly clarify that this abyss is a divinely controlled prison for demonic powers awaiting judgment, not the Puranic cosmological realm
Ἀπολλύων / ἈβαδδώνApollyōn / AbaddōnDestroyer (Greek/Hebrew)the personal name of the king of the abyss’s demonic locusts”Apollyon,” “Abaddon”A named demonic power, but explicitly subordinate to and permitted by God’s sovereigntyअपल्लीयोन / अबद्दोनMedium — transliterated proper names; teach as subordinate to God’s sovereignty, not an independent evil deity
φαρμακείαpharmakeiasorcery, magic artsthe practice of drugs/potions/spells (root of English “pharmacy”)“sorceries,” “magic arts”Occult practice named among unrepented sins even amid divine judgment (9:21)जादूटोणाHigh — same term/risk as treated at 21:8; establishes the term here as recurring throughout the book

Chapter 10 — The Mighty Angel and the Little Scroll

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
ἄγγελος ἰσχυρόςangelos ischyrosmighty angela powerful heavenly messenger”a mighty angel”A heavenly being of great authority, but distinct from and subordinate to God/the Lambसामर्थ्यवान देवदूतMedium — देवदूत (God’s messenger) is the established Marathi Christian term for angel; must be kept distinct from देवता (a minor deity) in the Hindu pantheon sense — an angel is a created servant-messenger, never an object of worship (cf. Rev 19:10; 22:9, where John is rebuked for attempting to worship an angel)
τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ θεοῦto mystērion tou theouthe mystery of GodGod’s hidden redemptive plan, now to be brought to completion”the mystery of God”God’s previously hidden but now-to-be-fulfilled purpose in historyदेवाचे रहस्यMedium — must be distinguished from esoteric/occult “secret knowledge” traditions (गूढविद्या, tantric secret transmission) prevalent in folk religious practice; this is God’s own redemptive plan, disclosed in his own time to his own people, not privileged knowledge attained through secret initiation

Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses; the Seventh Trumpet

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
δύο μάρτυρεςdyo martyrestwo witnessestwo prophetic figures who testify, are killed, and are raised”two witnesses”A model of faithful witness even unto death, vindicated by resurrection — direct embodiment of Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecutionदोन साक्षीदारHigh — reuse established साक्ष root (ch.1); ties martyrdom directly to resurrection vindication
θηρίον (ἐκ τῆς ἀβύσσου)thērion (ek tēs abyssou)beast (from the abyss)a monstrous, empire-like antagonist power; first appearance of the book’s chief antagonist figure”the beast”The Antichrist power that persecutes God’s faithful witnesses — established here formally as a Critical recurring term (developed fully in ch. 13, 17, 19, 20)पशू / श्वापदCritical — establish here; see full treatment under Chapter 13 below

Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
δράκωνdrakōndragona great serpent/monster; explicitly identified as “that ancient serpent…the Devil and Satan” (12:9)“the dragon”Satan himself, the ultimate antagonist of the whole cosmic dramaसर्प (प्राचीन सर्प) / ड्रॅगनCritical — a genuine syncretism risk: नाग/सर्प (serpent) veneration is a live devotional practice in Maharashtra folk-Hindu religion (e.g., Nag Panchami festival, worship of snake deities as protective, even benevolent, beings). The curriculum must make emphatically explicit, every time this figure appears, that “that ancient serpent” is identified by name as ὁ διάβολος καὶ ὁ Σατανᾶς (सैतान, the Devil/Satan) — an evil, defeated enemy, never an object of veneration or a benevolent protective spirit
γυνὴ περιβεβλημένη τὸν ἥλιονgynē peribeblēmenē ton hēlionwoman clothed with the suna radiant, symbolic female figure representing God’s covenant people (Israel/the Church)“a woman clothed with the sun”Symbolic representation of the corporate covenant community from which the Messiah comes and which the dragon persecutesसूर्याचे वस्त्र परिधान केलेली स्त्रीHigh — radiant/solar female imagery risks assimilation to prominent Hindu goddess (Devi) iconography, in which goddesses (e.g., Durga, Lakshmi) are frequently depicted with solar or radiant imagery and are themselves objects of worship. This woman must be taught explicitly as a symbolic representation of God’s covenant people (never an independent divine or semi-divine female figure to be venerated in her own right)
Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελοςMichaēl ho archangelosMichael the archangela named, chief angelic warrior figure”Michael the archangel”A created angelic being who defeats the dragon by God’s authority, never an object of worship himselfमहादूत मिखाएलMedium — reuse established देवदूत root with महा- (great) prefix for “archangel”; keep clearly subordinate to and distinct from God/Christ
ἐνίκησαν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀρνίου καὶ διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶνenikēsan auton dia to haima tou arniou kai dia ton logon tēs martyrias autōnthey overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimonythe mechanism of victory over Satan explicitly named”they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony”The doctrinal key that interprets every other use of νικάω (overcome) in the book: victory comes through Christ’s atoning blood and the believers’ faithful testimony, never through self-effort or ascetic achievementरक्ताने आणि साक्षीच्या वचनाने त्यांनी त्याला जिंकलेCritical — this verse is the doctrinal control text for the whole book’s overcomer-language (2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21; 12:11; 15:2; 21:7); must always be taught alongside every other occurrence of νικάω/जिंकणे to preclude any reading of self-attained spiritual victory

Chapter 13 — The Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Earth

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
θηρίον (ἐκ τῆς θαλάσσης)thērion (ek tēs thalassēs)beast (from the sea)a composite, monstrous imperial power that receives its authority from the dragon”the beast”The ultimate this-worldly Antichrist power, opposing Christ and persecuting the saints, but permitted only temporary, derivative authority under God’s ultimate sovereigntyपशू / श्वापदCritical — must be taught as a symbolic apocalyptic figure of derivative, permitted, and ultimately doomed power — never as an independent power rivaling God on equal terms. The curriculum should stress the beast’s power is “given” (ἐδόθη, a divine passive, implying God’s own sovereign permission) rather than self-generated, reinforcing Sovereignty of God over History even over the forces of evil
ψευδοπροφήτης (implicitly, “beast from the earth”)pseudoprophētēsfalse propheta deceptive religious figure who promotes worship of the beast”the false prophet”The Antichrist’s religious propagandist, deceiving through false signs — the counterfeit of the true faithful witnessखोटा संदेष्टाHigh — reuse established संदेष्टा (prophet); खोटा (false) marks the deliberate counterfeit contrast with genuine, Spirit-given prophecy
χάραγμα τοῦ θηρίουcharagma tou thērioumark of the beasta stamped or branded mark on the hand or forehead, required for commerce, signifying allegiance”the mark of the beast”A supernatural mark of allegiance to the Antichrist system, in direct antithesis to God’s own seal (ch.7) on the same body-locationपशूचे चिन्हCritical — the forehead/hand location again intersects with the cultural practice of religious/sectarian forehead-marking (तिलक/टिळा) in Hindu devotional practice; must be taught as the deliberate demonic counterfeit and antithesis of God’s protective seal in ch. 7, not confused with any traditional religious forehead-marking practice as such
ὁ ἀριθμὸς αὐτοῦ, χξς΄ (ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ)ho arithmos autou, chi xi stigma (hexakosioi hexēkonta hex)his number, 666a symbolic numeric cipher for the beast’s identity (gematria)“the number of the beast, 666”A specific, decodable symbolic identifier, not a general numerological principle to be consulted for other purposesत्याचा आकडा ६६६Medium — India’s rich astrological and numerological (अंकशास्त्र) tradition may predispose readers to treat this number as invoking a general system of numerological interpretation for guidance; the curriculum should clarify this is a one-time, specific symbolic identifier tied to a particular historical/eschatological figure, not an invitation to numerological practice
προσκυνέω (τῷ θηρίῳ)proskyneō (tō thēriō)to worship, prostrate before (the beast)to bow down, do obeisance, render worship”worship the beast”Idolatrous worship rendered to the Antichrist power — the negative antithesis of the book’s central call to worship the Lamb/God aloneपशूची आराधना करणेCritical — establishes προσκυνέω (worship) as a term of central importance across the whole book, contrasted sharply between worship of God/the Lamb (legitimate, e.g., 4:10; 5:14; 7:11; 19:10 [of God]) and worship of the beast/its image (idolatrous, e.g., 13:4,8,12,15; 14:9,11). See glossary entry for full risk treatment of आराधना

Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη…μυστήριονBabylōn hē megalē…mystērionBabylon the great…a mysterythe symbolic name given to the corrupt system, explicitly called a “mystery” requiring interpretation”Babylon the great, mystery”Signals to the reader that “Babylon” here is symbolic-apocalyptic language, not a claim about the literal historical cityबाबेल महान…रहस्यMedium — reuse established बाबेल and रहस्य; reinforces the doctrine of Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation — the text itself signals its own symbolic mode

Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon

Chapter 18 introduces no major new theological terms beyond those already established (Babylon/बाबेल पडले from ch. 14 and 17, wrath/क्रोध, judgment/न्याय). One notable phrase:

TermTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningMarathi RenderingRisk
Ἐξέλθατε ἐξ αὐτῆς, ὁ λαός μουExelthate ex autēs, ho laos mouCome out of her, my peoplea divine call to separation from the corrupt system before its judgment falls”Come out of her, my people”Ties directly to the baseline’s separation_unto_gods_service doctrine — believers called to distinct, holy separation while remaining in the world, not withdrawal into asceticismतिच्यातून बाहेर या, माझ्या लोकांनोHigh — reuse baseline concept of holy separation (देवाच्या सेवेसाठी वेगळे केलेले); teach as a call to distinct allegiance and non-participation in idolatrous systems, not literal geographic withdrawal or monastic renunciation

(Reviewed: remainder of Chapter 18 — merchants’ lament, economic judgment imagery — reuses established वेश्या, बाबेल, क्रोध, न्याय vocabulary; no further new theological terms.)

ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦhē gynē autouhis wife/bridethe Church, now presented as Christ’s wife, having “made herself ready""his Bride,” “his wife”Same doctrine as above; the Church’s readiness is itself a gift (fine linen “granted” to her, 19:8) rather than self-achieved meritत्याची वधूCritical — see वधू treatment above (21:2); “granted” (ἐδόθη) must be preserved to show the bride’s readiness is itself given by grace
τὰ δικαιώματα τῶν ἁγίωνta dikaiōmata tōn hagiōnthe righteous acts/deeds of the saintsrighteous deeds, here explicitly identified as the “fine linen” of the bride”the righteous deeds of the saints”Reuse established saints = पवित्र जन and righteousness = नीतिमत्त्व; the bride’s deeds are the fruit and evidence of a righteousness already granted, not a separate ground of acceptanceपवित्र जनांची नीतिमत्त्वाची कृत्येHigh — must be taught carefully alongside Romans’ doctrine of justification by faith alone: these righteous deeds are fruit/evidence flowing from grace, not the ground of acceptance before God
πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινόςpistos kai alēthinosFaithful and Truea divine title for the rider on the white horse (Christ)“Faithful and True”Christ’s own character as the utterly reliable, victorious king — echoes 21:5’s “faithful and true” wordsविश्वासू आणि खराHigh — reuse established विश्वास root; consistent with 21:5 treatment
ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦho Logos tou Theouthe Word of Goda personal, divine title for Christ (cf. John 1:1, 14)“the Word of God”Christ’s identity as God’s own self-expressing, personal Word — a title of full deityदेवाचे वचनHigh — a genuinely delicate term: शब्द/वचन (“word,” sacred speech/sound) carries deep metaphysical resonance in Hindu philosophical tradition (e.g., शब्दब्रह्म/नादब्रह्म, the doctrine of sacred sound as ultimate reality, and the primal syllable ॐ). देवाचे वचन here must be taught as a strictly personal Christological title — the eternal Son as God’s own self-revealing Person — not an impersonal cosmic sound-principle or metaphysical vibration underlying the universe
βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίωνbasileus basileōn kai kyrios kyriōnKing of kings and Lord of lordsthe superlative, exclusive title of absolute sovereign authority”King of kings and Lord of lords”The climactic title affirming Christ’s total, unrivaled sovereignty — direct culmination of The Return and Reign of Christ and reuse of established Critical lord (प्रभू) doctrineराजांचा राजा आणि प्रभूंचा प्रभूCritical — reuse established प्रभू exactly; this superlative title must convey absolute, singular, unrivaled supremacy, not “a king among kings” or “a lord among many lords,” resisting any reading that would place Christ alongside other revered figures (e.g., Vitthal) within a devotee’s personal pantheon

Chapter 20 — The Millennium, the Final Judgment, the Lake of Fire

χίλια ἔτηchilia etēa thousand yearsthe millennial reign of Christ with his resurrected saints”a thousand years,” “the millennium”The Return and Reign of Christ’s initial, visible consummation in history — a specific, bounded period, not a repeating cosmic cycleसहस्र वर्षेMedium-High — must be taught as a specific, bounded, historical period within the linear unfolding of God’s one redemptive plan, not assimilated to the cyclical yuga-cosmology already flagged in the baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine
ἡ ἀνάστασις ἡ πρώτηhē anastasis hē prōtēthe first resurrectionthe bodily resurrection of believers/martyrs to reign with Christ”the first resurrection”Reuse established Critical baseline term resurrection = पुनरुत्थान; “first” here distinguishes it from the resurrection of the wicked to final judgment (20:5, 12-13), not a first of many rebirthsपहिले पुनरुत्थानCritical — reuse established पुनरुत्थान exactly; must be taught as one of exactly two bodily resurrections (the righteous to life/reign, the wicked to judgment), a dual and final structure with no structural equivalent in either Hindu rebirth cosmology or Buddhist punarbhava, requiring explicit positive construction, not merely a corrected word
κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶνkata ta erga autōnaccording to their works/deedsfinal judgment assessed by deeds recorded in books”according to what they had done”Final judgment evaluates deeds as evidence of the reality (or absence) of saving faith — must be taught carefully alongside Romans’ doctrine of justification by faith apart from worksत्यांच्या कृत्यांप्रमाणेHigh — a genuinely delicate doctrinal bridge-point: this judgment-by-works language must be explicitly reconciled in the curriculum with the baseline’s Critical doctrine of justification/imputed_righteousness (declared righteous by faith, not by works). Teaching notes should clarify that works here function as the evidence of true or false faith recorded in relation to the Book of Life (20:12,15), not as a separate, merit-based ground of salvation — and must be phrased so as not to echo the karma-ledger framework of cause-and-effect moral accounting that Ambedkarite Buddhist communities in Maharashtra specifically and explicitly rejected
ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος / ἡ λίμνη τοῦ πυρόςho thanatos ho deuteros / hē limnē tou pyrosthe second death / the lake of firefinal, eternal, conscious judgment, into which even Death and Hades themselves are finally cast”the second death”; “the lake of fire”See full Critical treatment at 21:8 above; established formally here (20:14-15) as the final destiny of the unredeemed, of Death, and of Hades itself — the complete and final abolition of death as an enemyदुसरे मरण / अग्नीचे सरोवरCritical — reuse consistent rendering with 21:8; note the theologically significant detail that even personified Death and Hades are themselves “thrown into” this lake (20:14), underscoring their final, definitive defeat, not their eternal co-existence alongside God’s reign
Γὼγ καὶ ΜαγώγGōg kai MagōgGog and Magogsymbolic OT names (Ezekiel 38-39) for the final, futile rebellion of the nations against God”Gog and Magog”The last, doomed rebellion against God’s reign before the final judgmentगोग आणि मागोगMedium — transliterated proper names; requires Ezekiel background
θρόνος μέγας λευκόςthronos megas leukosgreat white thronethe final judgment seat of God”the great white throne”The climactic scene of final, universal judgment — reuse established सिंहासन (throne, established ch.3-4)मोठे पांढरे सिंहासनMedium — reuse established सिंहासन

οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτὴν πᾶν κοινὸνou mē eiselthē eis autēn pan koinonnothing unclean shall ever enter itabsolute moral purity required for entry, guaranteed only by inclusion in the Lamb’s book of life”nothing unclean will ever enter it”Final, complete moral purity of the eternal city, guaranteed by grace (inclusion in the book of life) rather than self-attained ritual purityकोणतीही अशुद्ध वस्तू तिच्यात प्रवेश करणार नाहीMedium — अशुद्ध (unclean) risks a ritual-purity reading (cf. baseline’s caution on शुद्ध for “holy”); must be taught as moral/spiritual impurity excluded by grace-based inclusion in the book of life, not ritual defilement remedied by rite

ποταμὸς ὕδατος ζωῆςpotamos hydatos zōēsriver of the water of lifethe consummated fulfillment of 21:6’s “spring of the water of life""the river of the water of life”Eternal life flowing eternally from God’s own throne — reuse established treatment from 21:6जीवनाच्या पाण्याची नदीHigh — reuse rendering and risk-notes established at 21:6; must not be conflated with sacred-river veneration (e.g., Godavari, Ganga) common in Hindu pilgrimage practice — this river flows from God’s own throne as his gift, not a naturally sacred geographic feature to be ritually approached

ὄψονται τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦopsontai to prosōpon autouthey will see his facethe beatific vision — direct, unmediated sight of God”they will see his face”The final, direct, relational vision of God himself — the ultimate fulfillment of covenant intimacyत्याचे मुख पाहतीलMedium — this longing to directly “see” the divine face resonates suggestively with the Warkari/bhakti concept of दर्शन (darśan), the devotee’s privileged sight of a deity’s image; here the curriculum may constructively note that this verse represents the true, final, and personal fulfillment of that universal human longing to see God — direct relational communion with the one true God himself, not a repeatable ritual viewing of an image
Ἀμήν, ἔρχου, Κύριε ἸησοῦAmēn, erchou, Kyrie IēsouAmen. Come, Lord Jesusthe book’s climactic prayer of longing for Christ’s return”Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”The Church’s fitting final response to the whole book — earnest longing for the Return and Reign of Christआमेन. ये, प्रभू येशूCritical — reuse established आमेन (transliteration per baseline instructions), प्रभू, and येशू exactly; this closing prayer should be rendered identically wherever quoted across curriculum materials, paralleling the baseline’s rule fixing key verses verbatim

ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετὰ πάντωνhē charis tou kyriou Iēsou meta pantōnthe grace of the Lord Jesus be with allthe book’s final benediction”The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all”Fitting close on the note of grace — reuse established Critical baseline term grace = कृपाप्रभू येशूची कृपा सर्वांबरोबर असोCritical — reuse established कृपा, प्रभू, येशू exactly; final benediction should echo the grace-benedictions of Romans for full-curriculum consistency
