Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis: 2 Timothy (English → Marathi)

Curriculum: 2 Timothy Core passage anchor: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5 Purpose: This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the entire book of 2 Timothy (chapters 1–4), extending — and never contradicting — the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json and this curriculum’s own doctrine_risk_registry.json (already generated). It supplies the chapter-by-chapter doctrinal walkthrough required by the PRD’s full-book coverage mandate, then a consolidated matrix keyed to the same 14 doctrines, same risk tiers, and same review routing recorded in doctrine_risk_registry.json. No new doctrines are introduced here; this document is the analytical justification underlying that registry’s tiering decisions.

Consistency statement: All 14 doctrine names, risk tiers, and review-routing assignments below are copied verbatim from doctrine_risk_registry.json (version 1). This document does not alter any tier; it documents why each tier was assigned and where in the book each doctrine surfaces, chapter by chapter.

Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrinal Walkthrough (Full Book Coverage)

Chapter 1 (2 Timothy 1:1–18)

VersesContentDoctrine(s) engagedRiskTranslation risk note
1:1–2Apostolic greeting: “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus… to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace”Baseline terms (apostle, grace, called) — no new doctrine tier; establishes प्रेषित, कृपा, दया at onceदया (mercy) must be kept distinct from कृपा (grace); both appear together here and must not collapse into a single Marathi word.
1:3–5Thanksgiving; Timothy’s “sincere faith,” first in grandmother Lois and mother EuniceFaithful Transmission of the Gospel (family-line precedent for the doctrine’s chain-of-custody theme, though the formal चain language begins at 2:2 and 3:14)Criticalविश्वास here names a lineage of genuine trust, not an inherited caste/family religious identity; must read as personal trust reproduced across generations, not communal belonging.
1:6–7”Fan into flame the gift of God… spirit of power and love and self-control”Cross-doctrinal (spiritual gift, power of God) — baseline terms reused; feeds into Perseverance under Suffering (1:8 follows)High (baseline power_of_god)सामर्थ्य required, never शक्ती (baseline forbidden substitution).
1:8–9”Do not be ashamed… share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us… not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace”Perseverance under Suffering; Salvation by Grace, Not WorksCriticalAnchor verse for both doctrines simultaneously. संकल्प (purpose) must not echo नशीब/दैव/कर्मफळ; कृपा must be kept unmistakably unearned, mirroring Romans 11:5-6 discipline.
1:10”…through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel”Assurance of Reward (प्रकटीकरण/appearing anchor #1 of 3); Gospel (baseline)Criticalप्रकटीकरण must never be assimilated to Vaishnav avatar-descent imagery; keep identical rendering across 1:10, 4:1, 4:8.
1:11–12”For this gospel I was appointed a preacher… I am suffering… I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me”Guarding Sound Doctrine (first occurrence of the guarding motif, here as Christ guarding Paul’s deposit — the reverse direction of 1:14); Perseverance under SufferingCriticalराखणे/जपून ठेवणे here describes God’s guarding of Paul, distinct from Paul’s charge to Timothy to guard (1:14) — both directions must use the same guarding verb family for thematic coherence.
1:13–14”Follow the pattern of the sound words… guard the good deposit entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit”Guarding Sound Doctrine; Faithful Transmission of the GospelCriticalसुदृढ शिकवण (sound words/teaching) must be lexically fixed from its first occurrence here through 4:3. सुपूर्द केलेली ठेव reused exactly.
1:15–18Phygelus and Hermogenes deserted Paul in Asia; Onesiphorus refreshed him and searched him out; “may the Lord grant him mercy”Divine Faithfulness despite Human Unfaithfulness (introduced narratively before its didactic statement in 2:13); anticipates Apostasy pattern (2 Tim 4:10, 4:16)Highदया reused; sets up the book’s recurring contrast between those who abandon Paul and those who remain loyal — a pattern the reader must track across all four chapters.

Chapter 1 summary: Establishes five of the seven curriculum doctrines in seed form (Perseverance, Guarding Sound Doctrine, Faithful Transmission, Salvation by Grace, Assurance of Reward) plus two of the “Other” registry doctrines (Divine Faithfulness, and the groundwork for Union with Christ developed fully in ch. 2). No doctrine in this chapter is reviewed at less than High risk.

Chapter 2 (2 Timothy 2:1–26)

VersesContentDoctrine(s) engagedRiskTranslation risk note
2:1–2”Be strengthened by the grace… what you have heard from me… entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also”Faithful Transmission of the Gospel (the doctrine’s defining verse — four-generation chain: Paul→Timothy→faithful men→others)Criticalसुपूर्द कर is the anchor verb, sharing its root with सुपूर्द केलेली ठेव (1:14) so the reader can trace one continuous trust moving person to person. Must not read as an anonymous guru-lineage transmission.
2:3–7Soldier, athlete, farmer images: “share in suffering… no soldier gets entangled… an athlete is not crowned unless competing according to the rules… the hardworking farmer”Perseverance under Suffering; anticipates Assurance of Reward’s athletic imagery (4:7–8, στέφανος/crown)CriticalEstablishes the athletic/military metaphor field reused at 4:7-8; consistency of imagery across the two passages is doctrinally important.
2:8–10”Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel… I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory”Gospel; Resurrection (baseline, reused precisely — 2:18 later names a false teaching about this same doctrine); Election (baseline); Salvation (baseline); Perseverance under SufferingCriticalपुनरुत्थान must remain untouched even while later verses (2:18) describe Hymenaeus and Philetus’s false teaching about resurrection — the term’s precision must survive being used to describe an error about itself.
2:11–13”The saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself”Union with Christ in Suffering and Glory; Divine Faithfulness despite Human UnfaithfulnessHighThis creedal fragment must not be read through a Buddhist anatta lens (dissolution of a self that never truly existed); it is relational, historical union of a real person with the real, risen Christ. God’s faithfulness (2:13b) must read as personal covenantal reliability, not impersonal karmic law.
2:14–19”Avoid quarreling about words… rightly handling the word of truth… irreverent babble… Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened”Guarding Sound Doctrine; Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days (first named false teachers and named doctrinal error)Criticalसत्याच्या वचनाचे यथार्थपणे विवरण करणे (rightly handling) is the hermeneutical mandate underlying the whole guarding doctrine. The Hymenaeus/Philetus error is itself a distortion of the Resurrection doctrine — translators must not let the description of the error weaken the term पुनरुत्थान’s own precision.
2:20–22”In a great house there are vessels… of gold and silver… and of wood and clay… if anyone cleanses himself… he will be a vessel for honorable use… So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace”Personal Holiness as a Vessel for the Master’s Use; Righteousness, Faith, Peace (baseline reused)Highधनी (master, δεσπότης) must be kept lexically distinct from प्रभू (reserved for κύριος) so the household-vessel metaphor never blurs with direct address to Christ’s Lordship. “Cleanses himself” is moral/associational separation, not ritual purity.
2:23–26”Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies… God’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind… correcting his opponents with gentleness, God may perhaps grant them repentance… and they may escape from the snare of the devil”Guarding Sound Doctrine; Repentance Granted by God; Apostasy and False TeachersCritical / Highपश्चात्ताप must retain its “God may grant” framing, not self-generated moral resolve or karmic self-correction — restoration of an opponent is God’s gracious initiative, paralleling grace elsewhere in the letter.

Chapter 2 summary: Contains the doctrinal center of gravity for Faithful Transmission, introduces Union with Christ and Divine Faithfulness as named doctrines, and gives the first explicit naming of false teachers (Apostasy doctrine), plus the household-vessel holiness doctrine.

Chapter 3 (2 Timothy 3:1–17)

VersesContentDoctrine(s) engagedRiskTranslation risk note
3:1–5”In the last days there will come times of difficulty… lovers of self, lovers of money… having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days (defining vice-list and “form of godliness” passage)Criticalअंतिम दिवस must read as linear, unrepeatable, historically terminal time — never assimilated to Hindu cyclical Yuga cosmology (especially degenerating Kali Yuga) or a Buddhist decline-of-Dharma narrative. ईश्वरनिष्ठेचे बाह्यरूप (form of godliness) uses the same root (ईश्वरनिष्ठा) that describes genuine devotion positively at 3:12 — every occurrence needs theologian confirmation of sense.
3:6–7”…who capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth”Apostasy and False TeachersCriticalवासना (passions) must not import Hindu/Buddhist sensory-craving-to-be-extinguished vocabulary; सत्याचे ज्ञान (knowledge of truth) must anchor to relational gospel knowledge, not mystical self-attained realization (jnana-marga/prajna false-friend risk).
3:8–9”As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith… their folly will be plain to all”Apostasy and False Teachers (negative pole of Assurance of Reward’s “approved” vocabulary)Criticalविश्वासाच्या बाबतीत अपात्र (disqualified concerning the faith) marks the negative counterpart to δόκιμος (“approved,” 2:15) — must be kept in clear doctrinal contrast, not merged into generic personal failure language.
3:10–11”You have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life… my persecutions and sufferings… yet from them all the Lord rescued me”Perseverance under Suffering; Divine FaithfulnessCritical / Highछळ (persecution) resonates with Maharashtra’s own history of caste-based suffering — an empathetic bridge that must remain anchored specifically to suffering for Christ’s name/gospel, not generalized social hardship.
3:12–13”Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived”Genuine versus False Godliness (positive pole, paired with 3:5’s negative pole); Apostasy and False TeachersCriticalThis is the doctrinally load-bearing companion verse to 3:5: the SAME root (ईश्वरनिष्ठा) here names authentic, persecution-inviting devotion. Reviewers must confirm 3:5 and 3:12 land on opposite senses without collapsing either into the other — a genuine risk given the term’s proximity to Warkari bhakti vocabulary. फसवणे व फसणे (deceiving/being deceived) avoids भ्रम-based renderings with Vedantic māyā resonance.
3:14–15[CORE PASSAGE] “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus”Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Salvation (baseline)Criticalपवित्रशास्त्र (sacred writings) must never render as धर्मशास्त्र (activates forbidden धर्म root). Timothy’s assurance rests on a known, traceable human chain (Lois→Eunice→Paul), not an anonymous or mystical source of authority as in Warkari guru-lineage models — make this explicit for reviewers.
3:16–17[CORE PASSAGE] “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work”Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture (the doctrine’s defining verse)Criticalपरमेश्वरप्रेरित (God-breathed) is the doctrinal fulcrum; must never reduce to bare “प्रेरित,” which would collapse Scripture’s divine origin into Warkari sant-poet devotional-inspiration vocabulary (स्फूर्ती). परमेश्वराचा माणूस (man of God) must not flatten to a generic “a god’s man” (देव) nor imply devotional achievement (भक्त).

Chapter 3 summary: Houses both the core passage (3:14–4:5 begins here) and the single most theologically delicate pairing in the book — the twin, opposite-sense uses of ईश्वरनिष्ठा in 3:5 and 3:12 — alongside the defining statement of Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture.

Chapter 4 (2 Timothy 4:1–22)

VersesContentDoctrine(s) engagedRiskTranslation risk note
4:1–2[CORE PASSAGE] “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching”The Charge to Preach the Word; Final Judgment of Christ; Assurance of Reward (प्रकटीकरण anchor #2)Criticalमी आग्रहपूर्वक आज्ञा देतो must convey binding, witnessed courtroom-weight solemnity, never casual advice. वचन घोषित कर is a herald’s public proclamation of a king’s message, never a guru’s private discourse (प्रवचन). जिवंतांचा व मृतांचा न्याय करणे must read as personal, final, universal judgment — never an impersonal karmic ledger.
4:3–4[CORE PASSAGE] “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but… having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths”Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last DaysCriticalसुदृढ शिकवण must be the identical fixed phrase used at 1:13, underscoring the single, unchanging standard against novelty-seeking. दंतकथा (myths) is narrowly scoped to the false teachers’ invented tales — must not read as a blanket dismissal of the audience’s own traditional narrative literature (Puranic, Jataka, etc.).
4:5[CORE PASSAGE] “As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry”The Charge to Preach the Word; Perseverance under SufferingCriticalतुझी सेवा पूर्णपणे कर (fulfill your ministry) ties directly to 4:7’s “I have finished [the race]” — consistency of completion-vocabulary across these two verses is doctrinally significant.
4:6–8”For I am already being poured out as a drink offering… I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing”Assurance of Reward (defining verses); Perseverance under Suffering; Final Judgment of Christ; प्रकटीकरण anchor #3Criticalअर्पण होत आहे (poured out) must be clearly framed as Paul’s own life given in service to Christ’s mission, not ritual temple offering (अर्पण is common Hindu puja vocabulary). विजयाचा मुकुट (crown) renders a victor’s athletic wreath, not a royal diadem — requires explicit qualifying phrase and translator note to avoid implying Paul claims co-regency with Christ. राखून ठेवलेला (laid up) must not echo a self-accumulated karma-ledger; the reward rests in God’s own secure keeping, following a life already saved by grace.
4:9–13Personal requests; “Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me… Only Luke is with me… Bring the cloak… and the books, and above all the parchments”Apostasy and False Teachers (Demas as negative case study, echoing 4:3-4’s pattern); Faithful Transmission (Paul’s ongoing concern for the written deposit — “the books… the parchments”)Highहे सध्याचे जग आवडल्यामुळे मला सोडून गेला renders αἰών as “this present world,” never युग, to avoid invoking Hindu cyclical cosmic-age theology. Demas’s desertion should be read alongside 1:15 (Phygelus/Hermogenes) as part of the book’s sustained faithfulness/unfaithfulness contrast.
4:14–15”Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message”Final Judgment of Christ (negative counterpart to 4:8’s positive reward — divine justice symmetry)Highकृतीप्रमाणे प्रतिफळ देईल must preserve personal divine justice, not an impersonal law of moral cause-and-effect (karma false-friend, as flagged for Romans 8:28/providence).
4:16–18”At my first defense no one came to stand by me… But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me… So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”Divine Faithfulness despite Human Unfaithfulness; Assurance of Reward; Glory (baseline)HighReinforces the whole-book pattern begun at 1:15 (human desertion) and answered by God’s personal, reliable presence — not an impersonal cosmic balancing principle.
4:19–22Final greetings; “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.”Grace (baseline, closing formula)— (baseline Critical term, no new doctrine)Reuse कृपा exactly, consistent with the letter’s opening (1:2) and Romans convention.

Chapter 4 summary: Contains the remainder of the core passage (4:1–5), the doctrine-defining verses for Assurance of Reward and Final Judgment of Christ, and closes the book’s sustained faithfulness/unfaithfulness narrative thread (Demas/Alexander vs. Luke/the Lord who stood by Paul) that began in chapter 1.

Part B — Consolidated Doctrine Matrix (All 14 Doctrines, Full Book)

Part C — Cross-Doctrinal Threads Spanning All Four Chapters

Several narrative and lexical threads bind the whole book together and must be translated with cross-chapter consistency in mind, not chapter-by-chapter in isolation:

  1. The guarding/entrusting word family (φυλάσσω/τηρέω/παρατίθημι/παραθήκη → राखणे, जपून ठेवणे, सुपूर्द कर, सुपूर्द केलेली ठेव) runs from 1:12 through 2:2 to 4:7, binding Guarding Sound Doctrine and Faithful Transmission of the Gospel into one coherent metaphor of a trust received, kept, and passed on.
  2. The faithfulness/unfaithfulness contrast runs from 1:15 (Phygelus, Hermogenes desert; Onesiphorus remains loyal) through 2:13 (the creedal statement) through 3:11 (Paul rescued) to 4:9–18 (Demas deserts; Alexander opposes; the Lord stands by Paul). This is not confined to any single registry doctrine but supports both Divine Faithfulness and Assurance of Reward, and must read as one sustained argument, not disconnected anecdotes.
  3. The appearing (ἐπιφάνεια/प्रकटीकरण) motif occurs at exactly three points (1:10, 4:1, 4:8) and must be rendered identically at all three, tying Assurance of Reward to the Charge to Preach the Word and to the Gospel doctrine (Christ’s first appearing abolished death; his final appearing brings reward and judgment).
  4. The athletic/military metaphor field (2:3–7’s soldier/athlete/farmer; 4:7’s fight/race/kept the faith) must use a consistent metaphorical register across both passages so the reader recognizes 4:7 as the fulfillment of the images planted in chapter 2.
  5. The ईश्वरनिष्ठा (godliness) root appears in both a positive (3:12, and cf. the general “godliness” vocabulary implied at 1:5’s genuine faith) and a hollow, negative sense (3:5) within eleven verses of each other — the single highest-density doctrinal disambiguation risk in the book, requiring theologian confirmation at every occurrence throughout chapters 1–4, not only within chapter 3.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture

Marathi name: पवित्रशास्त्राची प्रेरणा व पूर्णता
Key terms: sacred writings, all Scripture, God-breathed, man of God, complete, equipped
Review routing: Human theologian

परमेश्वरप्रेरित (God-breathed) is the doctrinal fulcrum: a bare ‘प्रेरित’ alone would collapse Scripture’s unique divine origin into the same vocabulary used for Warkari sant-poets’ devotional inspiration (स्फूर्ती), implying exalted human poetry rather than God’s own speech. पवित्रशास्त्र must never be rendered धर्मशास्त्र, which activates the same forbidden धर्म root flagged for caste-Hindu dharma and Ambedkarite reinterpreted Dhamma sensitivities in the baseline law entry. Must also be kept distinct from the Buddhist Tripitaka, authoritative as teaching but not as divine revelation, and from abhang poetry, revered but not claimed as God’s own spoken word.

Perseverance under Suffering

Marathi name: दुःखसहनात टिकून राहणे
Key terms: suffer hardship, endure, persecution, poured out as a drink offering, good soldier
Review routing: Human theologian

हालअपेष्टा सहन करणे is deliberately used instead of दुःख (Buddhism’s First Noble Truth term for suffering to be ended through the Eightfold Path) or क्लेश (the Yogic/Buddhist term for afflictions extinguished through self-effort), since Paul commends purposeful embrace of suffering for the gospel in hope of future glory — a directly opposite theological posture from escaping suffering through self-cultivation. Persecution (छळ) resonates with Maharashtra’s own history of caste-based suffering, offering an empathetic bridge, but must be anchored specifically to suffering for Christ’s name, not generalized social hardship.

Guarding Sound Doctrine

Marathi name: सुदृढ शिकवणीचे रक्षण
Key terms: entrusted deposit, guard, sound teaching, teaching, rightly handling the word of truth
Review routing: Human theologian

सुदृढ शिकवण must remain an identical fixed phrase across every occurrence (1:13; 4:3), since the doctrine itself asserts a single, unchanging standard against the novelty-seeking of the last days; any lexical drift would undercut the very point being made. सुपूर्द केलेली ठेव (entrusted deposit) must not be softened into a vague ‘teaching’ but must retain the sense of a fixed trust received and to be passed on unaltered.

Faithful Transmission of the Gospel

Marathi name: शुभवर्तमानाचे विश्वासू हस्तांतरण
Key terms: entrust, faithful men, the word of God is not bound, assured from whom you learned
Review routing: Human theologian

The multi-generational transmission chain (Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others also) must be rendered with सुपूर्द कर consistently, sharing its root with सुपूर्द केलेली ठेव, so the reader can trace the same trust moving from person to person. Timothy’s assurance (3:14) rests on a known, traceable human chain, not an anonymous or mystical source of authority as in some Warkari transmission-of-grace or guru-lineage models — this distinction should be made explicit for reviewers.

The Charge to Preach the Word

Marathi name: वचन घोषित करण्याची आज्ञा
Key terms: I solemnly charge, preach the word, in season and out of season, fulfill your ministry
Review routing: Human theologian

मी आग्रहपूर्वक आज्ञा देतो (διαμαρτύρομαι) must convey binding, witnessed solemnity before God and Christ Jesus, not casual advice. वचन घोषित कर (preach) must be rendered as an authorized herald’s public announcement of a king’s message, never as a guru’s private discourse (प्रवचन) or a lecture among equals — this distinction is central to the doctrine’s authority claim.

Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days

Marathi name: अंतिम दिवसांतील धर्मत्याग व खोटे शिक्षक
Key terms: last days, form of godliness, itching ears, myths, deceiving and being deceived, passions, loved this present world
Review routing: Human theologian

अंतिम दिवस must be presented as linear, unrepeatable, historically terminal time, never assimilated to the Hindu cyclical Yuga framework (especially the degenerating Kali Yuga of Puranic cosmology, which recurs endlessly) or a Buddhist decline-of-Dharma narrative. ईश्वरनिष्ठेचे बाह्यरूप (form of godliness) is especially delicate because the same root term (ईश्वरनिष्ठा) is used positively elsewhere in the letter (3:12) for genuine devotion — every occurrence of the negative ‘hollow form’ sense requires theologian review to avoid implying condemnation of genuine bhakti-style devotion in general. वासना (passions/desires, 4:3; 2:22) risks importing Hindu/Buddhist sensory-craving-to-be-extinguished vocabulary where the actual concern is desire distorting one’s choice of teachers, addressed by grace and truth rather than self-discipline.

Assurance of Reward

Marathi name: प्रतिफळाची खात्री
Key terms: fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith, crown of righteousness, the righteous judge will award, laid up for me
Review routing: Human theologian

विजयाचा मुकुट (crown of righteousness) renders a victor’s athletic wreath (στέφανος), not a royal diadem; Marathi मुकुट ordinarily suggests royal kingship and risks implying Paul claims co-regency with Christ rather than a commendation for faithful finishing — requires an explicit qualifying phrase and translator note. राखून ठेवलेला (laid up/reserved) must not be phrased so as to echo a self-accumulated karma-ledger of merit; the reward rests entirely in God’s own secure keeping and follows a life already saved by कृपा, not a system of merit accumulation that could be mistaken for the karma-based frameworks Ambedkarite Buddhist communities explicitly rejected.

Salvation by Grace, Not Works

Marathi name: कृतीशिवाय कृपेने तारण
Key terms: saved us and called us, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace
Review routing: Human theologian

This verse’s explicit works/grace contrast requires the same rigor as Romans 3-4 and 11:5-6: कृपा must be kept unmistakably unearned, and संकल्प (God’s own purpose) must not be rendered so as to echo नशीब/दैव/कर्मफळ (fate/destiny/karma-fruit) — the very karma-based explanation of standing that Ambedkarite Buddhist communities explicitly and painfully rejected by converting away from caste Hinduism.

Genuine versus False Godliness

Marathi name: खरी व खोटी ईश्वरनिष्ठा
Key terms: form of godliness, denying its power, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted
Review routing: Human theologian

The letter uses the same Marathi devotion-vocabulary root (ईश्वरनिष्ठा) for both an authentic, persecution-inviting devotion to Christ (3:12) and a hollow, power-denying counterfeit (3:5). Reviewers must confirm each occurrence lands on the correct sense, since collapsing the distinction would either dismiss all outward devotional expression as false or fail to warn against religiosity without transforming power — either error carries serious pastoral and doctrinal consequences given the term’s proximity to Warkari bhakti vocabulary.

The Final Judgment of Christ

Marathi name: ख्रिस्ताचा अंतिम न्याय
Key terms: judge the living and the dead, the righteous judge, the Lord will repay him according to his deeds
Review routing: Human theologian

Christ’s judgment must be presented as personal, final, and universal, rendered by नीतिमान न्यायाधीश — never as an impersonal karmic ledger or self-executing law of moral cause-and-effect, a distinction with direct resonance for readers formed by caste-Hindu karma teaching or Buddhist dependent-origination frameworks that this audience may have explicitly reconsidered or rejected.

High Risk Doctrines

Union with Christ in Suffering and Glory

Marathi name: दुःखात व गौरवात ख्रिस्ताशी एकरूपता
Key terms: died with him, live with him, endure, we will reign with him, if we deny him
Review routing: Human theologian

This creedal fragment ties the believer’s future to Christ’s own death and life, not to a self-attained spiritual achievement. Care is needed that ‘dying with him’ is not read through a Buddhist anatta lens (dissolution of a self that never truly existed) but as a relational, historical union of a real person with the real, risen Christ — consistent with the baseline’s caution on adoption and resurrection doctrines for Buddhist-background readers.

Divine Faithfulness despite Human Unfaithfulness

Marathi name: मानवी अविश्वासूपणातही देवाची विश्वासूता
Key terms: if we are faithless, he remains faithful, he cannot deny himself
Review routing: Human theologian

God’s unwavering faithfulness must not be read as an impersonal law of moral consistency (echoing karma’s inexorable, impersonal cause-and-effect) but as the personal, covenantal reliability of परमेश्वर toward his own promise — a distinct ground for assurance from any self-generated merit or cosmic balancing.

Repentance Granted by God

Marathi name: देवाकडून दिलेला पश्चात्ताप
Key terms: God may perhaps grant them repentance, escape from the snare of the devil
Review routing: Human theologian

पश्चात्ताप (repentance) must retain its ‘God may grant’ framing rather than reading as self-generated moral resolve or a karmic self-correction process; restoration from error is God’s gracious initiative toward the opponent, mirroring the doctrine of grace elsewhere in the letter.

Personal Holiness as a Vessel for the Master’s Use

Marathi name: धन्याच्या उपयोगासाठी पवित्र साधन
Key terms: vessels of gold and silver…and of wood and clay, cleanses himself, vessel for honorable use, useful to the master
Review routing: Human theologian

The ‘cleansing’ here is moral and associational separation from dishonorable teaching and company, not ritual purity (avoid शुद्ध read narrowly as ceremonial cleanliness); धनी (master) must be kept lexically distinct from प्रभू (Lord, reserved for κύριος) so the household-vessel metaphor does not blur with direct address to Christ’s Lordship.
